Blog Day :

5321 Post No. : 17450

Hullo Atuldom

At the outset let me wish an active Atulite on his birthday. These days his status has changed from ‘active’ to ‘hyper-active’ Atulite. He is the major guest contributor for the blog these days. It is almost like he has taken it upon himself that the blog should continue its race towards centuries at superfast pace; so much so that, the century number 174 happened in 28 days- the fastest since 23rd March 2018. In fact January 2023 saw a 100 posts- the last time this happened was also in March of 2018 (118 posts). 53 of the 100 posts of January was by this hyper-active guest contributor who goes by the name Avinash Scrapwala- and it should be kept in mind that none of his posts are SCRAP they are all good to read with accurate lyrics and most of his 688 posts have lyrics in Devnagri script too. (the number for this stands at 410).

Avinashji, Wishing you lots & lots of free hours so that you can keep sending gems to Atulji & Sudhirji to post here on the blog. May you reach your next milestone here quickly. Wish you a very Happy Birthday. 🙂

12th February happens to be the birth anniversary of a yesteryear actor who didn’t loose steam till almost the very end (his last release was in 2007 & he passed away in 2013). He was so versatile that he managed to make people hate the characters he enacted as villain, love his characters of father/ grandfather etc. He was a constant in the film industry from 1940. He had acted in 22 films before 1947 after which he came to Bombay (post partition of India after Indian Independence). After a brief gap, his career took off again from 1948. Then there was no stopping till 1998 when (at 78) he had health and age related issues. Then he cut down his work but still made exceptions when Amitabh Bachchan approached him with characters in his productions “Mritudaata” and “Tere Mere Sapne” where special arrangements were made to accommodate the actor’s health problems.

We are remembering the actor who played varied characters for over 50 years. We are remembering Pran Saab (as the industry used to address him – is what I have read at various places).
I had written this post in 2019. Where in I had written this:-

“The year 1972 saw a new genre of films wherein two actors who were past their prime – 61 and 52 was definitely not the age where actors play college students or young characters- were playing the central characters in a movie where the lead actor or the supposed- hero played second fiddle to these two. I am talking of “Victoria No 203″ by Brij Sadanah. Brij himself made another movie a few years later “Chori Mera Kaam” with these two seniors playing central characters. I am talking of an all-time favourite Jodi of cinelovers – Ashok Kumar and Pran.”

That was part of a post for a song from “Raaja aur Raana” (1983). I had not seen the movie at the time of writing that post, have not seen even now. But I have discovered, subsequently, that Ashok Kumar & Pran feature in almost all the songs of the film. There is a song in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Shailendra Singh that can be said to be a tribute to the character the legendary duo played in “Victoria No 203”. The duo regale us with their “do-bechaare-binaa-sahaare/” style antics. There is a female voice too in this song, which is lip synced by Manorama, which I am unable to identify and cannot find mention on any of the known internet sites.

“Raaja Aur Raana” was directed by Shibu Mitra and produced by S.K. Kapur. It had a cast of Ajit, Shakti Kapoor, Puneet Issar, Madhu Malhotra, Chand Usmani, Aaloka etc etc supporting Ashok Kumar and Pran. The songs were written by Verma Malik and Bappi Lahiri was the music director.

Here is the lovable jodi of ‘Raja aur Rana’ a.k.a Ashok Kumar & Pran on Pransaab’s birth anniversary

khoobsoorat hai ye andaaz
chhupa hai ismein kaun sa raaz
waah re ustaad

waah re ustaad
waah re ustaad
chhupa hai ismein kaun sa raaz

jaan mehfil mein phir kya ho
raaz kahne se pahle tum
zara anjaam soch lo
ishaaron ko agar samjho
raaz ko raaz rahne do

waah re ustaad

dil mein bas gayi teri yaad
waah re ustaad

bahut dinon ki pyaas bujha le
aaj mujhe baahon mein bhar le
jo teri marji hai tu karle
jahaan jahaan jaaoge wahin main jaaungi
har din raat mein tere kaam aaungi

hum donon ki khoob nibhegi
apni jodi khoob sajegi
main teri laila

tera mera puraana yaaraana
lo aa gaye dekho dekho
haaye haaye raja rana
aaja aaja mere godee mein aaja
jo tere marji mein karle aaja aaja
baahon mein bhar le
haaye haaye main kurbaan

arre bhaago bhaago rana
na idhar ke na udhar ke
ho ho ho chal chal chal raaja
are kaise maarte hai dhakke

aa gaye hain chakke
bhaago bhaago ae bhaago bhaago ae

         Bombay Gangout – Part 5
         The Day After.

The next day to the gangout meeting, we had plans for a visit to our dear Arun ji. As the readers may be aware, Arun ji had not attended the gangout meeting. The personal family circumstances in the recent past, had been exigent to the extreme.  His life partner had passed away just 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting. We had decided to go ahead with the meeting, sans his participation.

“Ek Naao Do Kinaare” (1973), though a recent movie by the standards of this blog, is by and large a forgotten movie. It was a Nitin Films production and it was directed by B R Ishaara. The movie had newcomers like Hina Kausar, Rakesh Pandey, Mrinal Mukherjee and oldtimer like Manhar Desai in it.

“Jee Chaahta Hai” (1964) is a movie starring Joy Mukherji, Rashree, Shyama, Rajendranath, Nazir Hussain,Jeewan etc. I have not seen the movie so I often try to guess the story of the movie from the picturisation of the song, and my conclusions thus drawn about the movie are often quite off the mark. 😀

A wonderful “searching-for-a-lost-one” song. The movie is Chaalis Din (1959) with a reasonably good set of actors, i.e. Premnath, Shakeela, Nishi, KN Singh, Maruti, Shammi, Chaman Puri, Kuckoo etc. This particular song is picturized on Shakeela as the main singer on screen, supported by Shammi and Maruti. Maruti looks very different and somber, unlike his comical sidekick roles that he has played in many movies of Dara Singh, Sheikh Mukhtar etc.

In the early 1970s, when I was growing as a pre teen kid, I used to listen to Hindi movie songs and I longed to watch the movies containg these songs. The movies that I wold have dearly loved to see those days, since I loved their songs, were “Seeta Aur Geeta” (1972) and “Victoria No. 203” (1972). But unfortunately I could never see these two movies at that time. That remains a big regret of my life to this day.
