As I am searching for a song to make the debut post for today, my mind goes to check the anniversaries page, and I find that today is the anniversary of passing away of Pt Shivram. This gives me an impetus and I start exploring the films for which Pt Shivram has composed the music. After going thru the list of his films, as given in the Geet Kosh, I find that although his work in Hindi cinema is confined to about 23 films, there still are some of his films that are not yet represented on our blog. So I search thru his pending films, and I come across this obscure film, albeit from a major banner.
The film is ‘Phool Aur Kaliyan’ from 1960, and it is produced by V Shantaram for his own banner – Rajkamal Kala Mandir. From the descriptions that I am able to locate, this is a children’s film. The unique distinction that this film carries is that it is the first children’s film to receive the National Award in the then newly created category of children’s films.
The director of the film is Ram Gabale. The songs of this film are penned by Bharat Vyas, and the music, yes, is by Pt Shivram. The list of actors as per the Geet Kosh, reads like – Radhika, Uma Dutt, Shaamlal, Daljeet, Bhagwan, Kiran, P N Bali, Somdutt, Moti Bai, R Khanna, Shakeela Bano Bhopali, Rani, Premlata, and George.
My plan was to also provide a brief bio sketch of Pt Shivram. As I scouted the net for gathering information, I came across a blog post by Aditya Pant ji, on his blog ‘Parwaaz e Khwaahish’. This blog post is dedicated to Pt Shivram. As I read through this blog, and checked out the reference materials listed, I find that I could not have done anything more or any better a job that this. The interesting thing is about the singing voices. For this film, Pt Shivram has got three of the four songs in the film, to be sung by the daughters of V Shantaram – Madhura and Charusheela. This particular song is sung by Madhura Shantaram.
The song is a very wonderful and a very poignant one, albeit a very inspirational song. Keeping in with the spirit of the film being a children’s film, this song is a song of encouragement and motivation. It tells about the difficulties that one is bound to face in life. But with patience and faith, one will surely overcome all such difficulties. A superb song for children.
With this post, now the 1960 film ‘Phool Aur Kaliyan’ makes its debut on our blog.
