Hope all are fine after a week of festivities and excitement. This morning I got a smart message on WhatsApp: “Tyohaar ke baad ghar mein Lakshmiji aaye na aaye, shareer mein Ganeshji zaroor aa jaate hai”- I am sure, many are facing this syndrome as well as a lot of lethargy after the bout of eating sweets and savouries. So, we are going to have a song that will compel us to wear our dancing shoes, shake a leg etc. This should help to shake away the extras that have gathered in our system, in this last week.
The song is from the opening years of the ’80s when songs with Disco music was a rage. Songs from “Karz” (1980) music by Laxmi-Pyare, “Qurbani” (1980) music by Kalyanji Anandji (remember ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’), “Yaarana” (1981) music by Rajesh Roshan, and a few more movies were already popular. Bappi Lahiri, who was associated with movies like “Aap Ki Khaatir” (1977), “Aangan Ki Kali” (1979), “Ahsaas” (1979, having one disco based song roothho na roothho na) and “Agreement” (1980) and many more successful albums came up with songs of different genres in “Armaan” (1981).
There were the philosophical songs jeewan mitaanhai deewaanapana and ‘saare jahan ki amaanat hai yeh’; as well as a few romantic and folksy songs. And then there were songs with Goan musical beats which were a must-play in all the discotheques of that period. “Rambha ho ho ho” with Usha Uthup singing for both the ladies – Kalpana Iyer and Prema Narayan, and “Aah meri jaisi haseena ka dil” which was sung by Sharon Prabhakar and Bappi Lahiri– two songs which have not been forgotten till date, at least by fans who were teenagers then.
8th November was the 74th birthday of the singer with a unique voice quality- Usha Uthup. And she has made a place for herself in the hearts of film music lovers all over the world, from the first time she was heard in “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” in 1971. That makes it fifty long years in public eye. She may not be in a position to say that she has 100s and 1000s of songs to her name; but then that was because of her different voice which may not have suited the kind of songs emoted by the female leads of our movies. But the kind of songs that she has rendered cannot be sung by anyone else. She can sing in 16 different languages and has also had screen time in a few movies. The longest being in a Malayalam movie where she played mother to Mammoothy. She was also seen in ‘Bombay To Goa’, ‘Hattrick’ etc. in song situations. Wishing this hyper-energetic lady who dazzles her stage shows and public appearances in her grand sarees, bangled wrists and brilliant Bindis –all health and happiness forever.
This song written by Indeevar has Deepak Parasher, Shakti Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Prema Narayan and Kalpana Iyer partaking in the Goan Carnival fest.

26th January is a national occasion which is celebrated across the country with hoisting of the national tricolour in the country’s capital New Delhi followed by the rest of the country in educational institutions, government buildings and some private housing complexes. There are speeches and parades all around showcasing india’s diverse cultures and achievements.
Our housing society too celebrates this national day with flag hoisting and a gathering of the residents. There is a small difference in that we also conduct a small Pooja the previous evening followed by small acts by the children of the apartment, dinner and games (in that order, mind it). The night always comes to an end with a game of housie and antakshari, I am going to be enjoying it this year after a long gap.
25th January happened to be the birthday of Kavita Krishnamurthy who was born Sharada Krishnamurthy in New Delhi. She is a trained classical singer who has also learnt Rabindra Sangeet. She first recorded a song under the baton of Hemant Kumar as a co-singer to Lata Mangeshkar in 1971 for a Bengali movie. In the second half of the 70s she was reintroduced to Hemantda by Ranu Mukherjee and was used as a singer in Hemantdas’ live shows from where Manna Dey spotted her and her slow journey into film music began.
Initially she was a dubbing artist and cut demos of songs intended to be sung by established singers. the 1980 release “Maang Bharo Sajna” featured a song in her own voice but was deleted from the final cut of the film. Her first major hit was in 1985 when “Pyaar Jhukta Nahin” hit the screens and “tumse milkar na jaane kyun” became a hit. From then she has been on the Indian film firmament with songs in Kannada (where she had recorded her first film song), Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, English, Urdu, Nepali, Bengali, Odiya, Konkani etc. She was a Padmashri winner in 2005 and four time filmfare award winner. A humble and courteous human being who I had the luck to meet on one of my trips between Bangalore and Mumbai. She is very approachable and forever smiling. Here is wishing that smile stays forever.
Today we have a version of our National Song “Vande Mataram” in the voices of Kavita Krishnamurthy and Usha Uthup from the 2001 Karan Johar directed Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. We have various artists who have presented this song in their own styles. The ones which I love to hear on repeat are by Hemant Kumar in the 1952 release “Anand Math” and A.R.Rahman’s non-film version which came in 1997 which starts as “Maa tujhe salaam”. K3G had 5 songs by Jatin-Lalit, 5 by Sandesh Shandilya and one by Aadesh Shrivastva. Today’s “Vande Matram” is by Sandesh Shandilya.

“Waardaat”(1981) was produced and directed by Ravikant Nagaich for Gopi Enterprises, Bombay. This movie had Mithun Chakraborty, Kajal Kiran, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer, Iftekhar,Birbal, Kesto Mukherjee, Jagdeep, Prem Bedi, Manorama, Praveen Paul, Thyagraj, Randhir, Dinesh Hingoo, Prem Kumar, Sharat etc in it.
The movie had six songs in it. They were sung by five singers.
Today (7 november 2019) is the 71st birthday of Usha Uthup. On this occasion, here is a song from “Waardaat”(1981). This song is sung by Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri. Ramesh Pant is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.
The song is picturised on Kalypana Iyer and Mithun Chakraborty.
Mithun Chakrborty enjoyed vast popularity among the chawanni chhaap movie goers of those days :). Such audiences were to be found all over India, and more so in eastern part of the country. Front stall movieoers of Bihar (including present day Jharkhand) “ditched” their own Shatrughan Sinha and became fans of Mithun Chakraborty. 🙂
I was among the small minority who did not like Mithun Chakraborty movies. 🙂
If teenagers of Maharashtra celebrated Ganpati festival, then teenagers in Eastern parts celebrated Saraswati Puja in a similarly grand way. Playing hindi movie music in these Saraswati Puja pandals used to be a major activity of these saraswati Puja festivities. Operating the record player and thus deciding which songs to play used to be a much sought after task. I had the proud privilege of being the record player operator in early 1980s at Ranchi. 🙂 I recall playing “disco” songs of those days, including the song under discussion. 🙂
Most Saraswati Puja organisers used to be academically challenged. They would bring their (largely untouched) textbooks in the pandal to be kept at the feet of goddess Saraswati, hoping that pooja thus performed would magically transfer the contents of those text books into their brains. 🙂

8th November, this year (2018) was bang in the middle of the festivities connected with the big Indian festival of lights Deepawali, which is said to symbolize Rama’s return to Ayodhya after completing the stipulated 14 years of exile. It is said that since the day he returned was the day of Amavasya whole of Ayodhya was lit up to pave the way for the Lord. Another belief is that it marks the vanquishing of the demon Narkasura by goddess Kali and so one of the five days of festivities is called “Kali Chaudas” or “Narka Chaturdashi”.
Whatever the belief it is a five day long festival of lights and joy and celebrations in most parts of India. So here is wishing the Atulsongaday followers or Atulites as I like to call the followers a Happy Deepawali and Prosperous New Year. Some parts of the country will be celebrating “Bhai Dooj” or “Bhau Beej” on 9 November. Happy Bhai Dooj too.
The spirit of the festival is such that I found that the blog has been getting one-song-per-day for a few days now. I myself visited the blog after 3 days today. But the festival was not the only reason for my absence, my all-time favourite grudge about Bangalore had also played a part for my absence.
In fact I heard the Vividh Bharati too after quite some days and it was playing all songs of Usha Uthup in the 9:30 p.m. program. On googling I realized that it was Usha Uthup’s birthday on 8 november 2018.
She has turned 71, time has really flown since she was first sang under RD Burman’s baton in the 1971 for “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” and followed it up with “Bombay to Goa” in which she also made an appearance on-screen. She has an unusual voice which is normally not used for the female lead but more for dance numbers. But our legs move automatically to songs sung by her whether it is “one two cha cha cha”; “hari om hari”; “rambha ho”; “doston se pyar kiya”; “pyar karna toh zaroori hai”; or “I love you, kya kushi hai kya hai gham”. I find that the stats page shows that we have “6” songs of Usha on the blog (I could locate only 3). That is surprising considering that many of her songs were popular and still are popular.
The song with this post is another such song. It is from the 1978 released Krishna Shah directed multi star-casted “Shalimar”. The songs were written by Anand Bakshi and music was R. D. Burman’s. Shalimar’s LP contains 10 songs of which 3 were instrumental, one was a multi-version song. we have three songs from the movie on the blog, here is the next. It is a song which is filmed in a dance school where Aruna Irani is shown giving training for “Cha Cha Cha”. There is also a gambling den attached to the school where we see a sardar (Premnath) squandering his wealth, suffering a heart attack and being assisted by Dharamendra. It is from here that the story of the movie begins.

Today is the first birth date, after the death of a personality who passed away at the age of 79 in December 2017. He retired from in front of the camera in 1999 after nearly 58 years of active Bollywood life. Amitabh Bachchan held him in high esteem and was always grateful to him for co-starring in ‘Deewar’ (1975) in a kind of second-hero role inspite of being much more senior and popular actor at the time when that film was being made.
Yes, today Shashi Kapoor would have turned 80. It is really saddening to remember him today. Infact, this last six to twelve months have been bad to fans of Bollywood; having lost personalities/ celebrities like Om Puri, Vinod Khanna, Sridevi, Shashi Kapoor etc. expectedly and unexpectedly. Vinod Khanna and Shashi Kapoor were ill for sometime but Om Puri’s and Sridevi’s deaths were shocking. But we never know what god has in store for us.
But let us snap out of this mood and enjoy the song with this post. It is from the 1983 film ‘Bandhan Kachchey Dhaagon Ka’. It is a song in the voice of Usha Uthup, Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar. It has music by Hemant Bhonsle, and lyrics by Anjaan. The movie was produced by KC Sharma and written and directed by Anil Sharma. The movie explored the relation between a happily married couple when faced with a new unexpected entrant in their life. Actually the husband is unaware that he has a son from a previous girlfriend (I don’t remember exactly if it is a previous girlfriend or an encounter with a particularly beautiful business associate). The child’s mother, Zeenat Aman, is bringing up the child as a single parent when she discovers she is terminally ill. So she sends the child across to its father without telling the child that “this is your father”. But the situation, much like in ‘Masoom’ (also in 1983) is enough to topple the apple cart of the family which takes the couple up to the threshold of divorce.
This movie came when Shashi Kapoor was looking younger than his age. When he was living a much-loved life. It never showed in his acting or his countenance that he was worried about his sick wife Jennifer. But when she died of cancer Shashi Kapoor was so heart broken that he suddenly aged, gained weight for a movie-role and then didn’t bother to loose it. Suddenly he was seen in fatherly and grand-fatherly roles when he was only in his 40s and then took complete retirement from movies in 1999 at the age of 60. And then he was seen regularly at Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre which he had set up with his wife. The last Bollywood movie he was seen in was ‘Akela’.
Remembering him today with this song in which he seen enjoying himself with Kalpana Iyer, Zeenat Aman and a group of rain dance revellers. And please note he has different dancing style in this song. 🙂

At the very outset, I must congratulate our Leader or Sutradhar as I like to call him or Ranchi Wala Gaanewala as Sudhir ji once called him (he is no longer in Ranchi but the name stays) on reaching a very important milestone- 10000 songs, imagine it is TEN THOUSAND posts by a single person. For this we should all give a collective YYIIPPEEEE!!!! Mubarak Ho! Mubarak Ho!
This must be a record of sorts where a blog has survived this looong and its karta-dharta has sooo many posts to his credit. And to think that this blog doesn’t make any comments or remarks on any person, place, caste, religion etc. the closest we come to religion is when a bhajan or qawwali is posted. Three cheers to that!
