Hullo Atuldom
We are on the last date of the first month of the 21st year of the 21st century.
January happens to be a cold month in the northern hemisphere of the earth. And India is in the middle of having winter which is characterized by fog, mist, cold winds etc depending on the Latitude that one resides on. When I used to be in Mumbai, the closest I came to experiencing ‘Sardi’, ‘Thandi’ etc was in the last week of December or first week of January. That too in the morning hours, till about 8 o’clock, then the thermometer would read round about 27 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day. I don’t remember seeing fog or mist there, but I had different climatic experiences once we shifted to Bangalore. I have seen all winter related features which last from November to January end with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees etc. Now in my current station, which is in the midst of lots of greenery and away from the hustle bustle of city-life, though the temperature did not touch 10 degrees on any day, we have been experiencing thick fog, cold winds, cold floors, etc.
All this talk of winter and cold climate, in addition to sharing pictures of fog with friends and family reminded me of a whole set of songs:- ‘jab chali thandi hawa’, ‘thandi hawaa yeh chaandni suhaani’, ‘thandi hawaa kaali ghaata aa hi gayi jhoom ke’, ‘thandi hawaayen lehraake aayen’, ‘thandi thandi hawaa mein dil lalchaaye’, ‘mujhko thand lag rahi hain’ etc etc.
The songs that I have mentioned are all popular numbers from their times. But the movies of the new century are no different. They also have songs where the different characters are reacting to cold climates with lots of guts- it takes a lot of guts to shoot these songs in cold climates, with snow etc for added effect and in costumes that are of the thinnest fabric possible like chiffon, lace etc. (Possibly the only climate appropriate dressing was Saira Banu in ‘Junglee’ and some other heroines of the ’60s and Hema Malini in a few movies of the ’70s, recently I re-saw “Dost”.) For further enhancement of the scene we may even see short dresses with long boots. My sympathies with all the female actors who have done those songs and scenes. And what do the male actors wear in such songs- long coats, mufflers, gloves etc.
In the build up to this post I recalled a 23 year old song. This song was shot in the cold climes of Australia. I had mentioned this movie to fellow-atulites, on our WhatsApp group last week, when the India- Australia cricket series was on. The uniqueness about this song is the heroine is dressed in climate appropriate clothes and we have the hero trying to be MANLY and showing of his biceps etc in half-jacket and jeans. I also read the heroine reminiscing about how the actor was shivering during the shoot.
I am talking of Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol. The movie was “Soldier” which was released in 1998. It was produced by Ramesh Taurani of Tips Records and directed by the director-duo: brothers Abbas-Mustan. It had Anu Malik as music director and Sameer was the lyricist. It was the third highest grossing album of 1998 behind “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Dil Se”.
This was Preity Zinta’s debut movie though she had signed “Kya Kehna” before this. “Dil Se” and “Soldier” have billed Preity Zinta as debutant; Preity had a supporting role in “Dil Se”. She was born in Shimla on 31st January. So today is her Birthday. Last I had written a post for her birthday was when she turned 40.
She has taken a sabbatical from acting a few times since 2009 for the sake of her IPL team. She has married her long-time American partner in 2016. In her career of almost 25 years, she has acted with all the top actors of the ’90s and later years. She has also acted in a movie with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor where her character was negative and Schizophrenic. She was praised for her portrayal of the character. She also appeared alongside The Big B in an English language film that was directed by Rituparno Ghosh “The Last Lear” in 2007, this was a film-inside-a-film drama. She has also played the traditional glamorous actress in movies. She has shared screen space with top actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee etc too.
Today’s song is to wish Bobby Deol too, even if belatedly for his birthday which was on 27th, he turned 52. Born as Vijay Singh Deol into the film industry as the youngest child of Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He first faced the camera when he was 5 or 6 year old as the baby Dharam in “Dharam Veer” (1977). His first adult role was in “Barsaat” (1995) where another star-child Twinkle Khanna made her debut. He has one more “Barsaat” (2005) in the list of his films. He has appeared in a few mutli-starrers and also shared screen space with his father and brother in a few of their home productions. The “Yamla Pagla Deewana” series was good to see due to the Deols even if the story was lame, tame or weak. It is always entertaining to see the Deols.

Today’s song is from the film Shri Nagad Narayan-1955.
There is a little story on why I have chosen this song today for my post here. Only the other day, I was going through my mails, searching for some reference. while searching for it, i went back well upto 2014 mails. Suddenly my attention fell on a mail written on 25-8-2014, by our friend in ASAD group-Mr. Mahesh Mamadapur. The mail was addressed to me, Atul ji and Sudhirji. It pointed out that a song by Khan Mastana in the film Shri Nagad Narayan-55 was still uncovered and he had suggested that one of us should make a post on it, as it was a good song.
Out of curiosity, I immediately checked whether this song was covered on the Blog. I was also curious to know, finally who wrote the post on that song. To my utter surprise, I found that even after 7 years the song had still remained uncovered. Perhaps, in those days, all of us must have thought that the other would write on the song. Then I checked on YouTube if this song was available. After a little effort, I found the song also. I felt relieved and decided to correct the slip at least now. Perhaps it was my destiny to write a post on this song, afterall ! Thanks Mahesh ji for the song and here it is, dedicated to Mahesh ji !
The film Shri Nagad Narayan-55 was produced by S.N.Kanva-of Kanva Brothers Corporation, under the banner of their own Kamdhenu Films, Bombay. It was directed by I.S.Johar and the music was by Vinod. The cast consisted of Meena (Shorey), Motilal, Majnu, Omprakash, Badri pershad,Leela Mishra, Shirin etc. The director, composer and the lead pair reminded me of their earlier Hit film ” Ek Thi Ladki”-1949, where, for the first time I.S.Johar and Majnu had made a comedy pair on the lines of Bud Abott and Louise Castello. Later they acted together as a pair in almost every film of Roop K. Shorey, who considered them ” Lucky Mascot”. However, I liked this pair in the film ” Hum sab chor hain”-1956, which was a adapted copy of the film Ek this Ladki-49.
There was another film ‘Nagad Narayan” made in 1943. This was a remake of a Marathi film ” पैसा बोलतो आहे ” made by Bhal G. Pendharkar. I do not know the story of today’s film, but I guess it was a comedy film ( with ‘ Vinod’ as the appropriate MD !). The film had 11 songs written by Qamar Jalalabadi, P L Santoshi, Verma Malik and Madhup Sharma.
In the year 1981, when I was the Zonal Manager in Glaxo Laboratories in Bombay, I had come in contact with this Madhup Sharma. Our company was making an Audio-Visual presentation for our London Principles, for our Veterinary products. One Mr. Mahesh Sharma was making it for us. He knew Madhup Sharma, who was friendly with actor Ashok Kumar. In those days Ashok Kumar used to have a very large Poultry Farm at Lonavala (between Bombay and Poona). We needed to shoot there and also interview Ashok Kumar. Madhup Sharma took us to Ashok kumar in his Chembur bungalow. There I met Ashok kumar personally for discussions. I took many photographs with him at that time.
This Madhup Sharma was a character actor, who acted in 48 films, from 1970 to 1989. He also wrote Lyrics for 2 films, Dara-53 and Shri Nagad narayan-55.
From 1950 to 1960 period, the maximum number of films – 124 were made in 1955, but most films this year were Mythological, Religious, Costume, Comedy and Stunt films. Incidentally, for the same period, 1950 to 1960, there were maximum Mythological/Religious films made – 124. Here are some milestones of 1955.
Film Pather Panchali had a world premier in New York. Festivals of Indian Films were held in London and Peking. Children’s Film Society was established in 1955 and Journal of Film Chamber was started by the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce.
Taking a look at the 124 films of 1955, we find that…
A coloured Costume film ‘Azaad’, with A grade actors like Dilip Kumar, Meena kumari, Pran etc came from Madras stable.
Leela Chitnis tried to launch her son AJIT as a Hero in the flop film ‘ Aaj ki Baat’. 19 Popular Saigal songs were repeated in film Amar Saigal.
Comedy musical Baap re Baap and Naashad’s Baradari made ripples.
Ashok Kumar’s film Bandish…..on the night of 6-12-1955, when Ashok kumar and MD Arunkumar Mukherjee-his cousin, were returning from the Trial show of Bandish, Arunkumar Mukherjee, died in the car after a massive Heart attack, on Ashok Kumar’s lap.
Film Bhagwat Mahima had very good Bhajans by Hemant kumar.
Film Chingari had lovely songs by MD Manohar. Nalini Jaywant sang her last film song. This was the last film of actress Sunalini Devi also.
Om Praksh directed his first flop film Duniya Gol hai. The film had a record number of 13 Guest Artistes !
The only film of Pt. Amarnath Chawla,” Garm Coat” was renamed ‘ The clerk and the coat’.
Burman’s musical House No.44 became popular.
Another Costume film with A grade actors like Dilip kumar, Dev Anand, Beena Rai etc. from Madras again – Insaniyat. The Hollywood import monkey Zippy featured in Radio Ceylon advertisements for the film.
The evergreen dance and Music film from V.Shantaram – Zanak Zanak Paayal Baaje drew large crowds.
MD Jaidev debuted with a flop film Joru ka Bhai.
N.Datta debuted with film Milap.
MD Ravi debuted with the film Vachan.
Some other films were Mr. and Mrs. 55,Munim ji, Railway Platform (Sunbil Dutt made a Debut), a serious musical, Seema, the great film Shri 420 and Naushad’s Udan khatola.
In the cast of today’s film, you find the name Shirin Bano. Yes, she too is one of the artistes who joined films to get a suitable husband and lead a respectable and comfortable life. Shirin, Shirin Bai or Shirin Bano was from a tawaayaf mother from Lucknow. Her father was a Tamil Brahmin – Ram Seshadri Aiyar, who worked as an accountant with Kikubhai Desai (father of Manmohan Desai) in his distribution department. They were 5 sisters and 1 brother. Shirin joined films at an early age.
Her first film was ‘Maharani’ (1934). The same year she worked in ‘Vehmi Duniya’, ‘Sewa Sadan’ and ‘Bala Joban’. In 1935 her films were ‘Shamsher e Arab’, ‘Pardesi Sainya’ and ‘Bambai Ki Sethani’. In 1936, she worked in ‘Tope Ka Gola’, ‘Snehlata’, ‘Passing Show’ and ‘Azaad Veer’. ‘Khwab Ki Duniya’, ‘His Highness’ and ‘Challenge’ are her films from 1937, ‘State Express’ and ‘Purnima’ in 1938, and ‘Leather Face’ and ‘Hero No. 1’ from 1939. Total 18 films only.
Shirin alson sang 9 songs in 6 films – Maharani-34, Pardesi Saiyan-35, Khwab ki duniya-37, His Highness-37, Purnima-38 and Hero No.1-39
Her youngest sister Meher Bano also joined films with the name Purnima (she also married a producer / director Bhagwandas Varma). Shirin married producer / director Nanabhai Bhatt, who already had a wife and 3 children. They had 6 children – Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt are their sons.
Today’s song is sung by khan Mastana. In the last part of this song, there are lines “” Laila, Laila pukarun mein ban mein, meri Laila basi mere man mein”. These are famous lines from an original song by Master Nissar in film ” Laila Majnu”-1931, made by Madon Theatres. These lines are used in many other Hindi film songs too.
Song- Aata hai yaad mujh ko guzra hua zamaana (Shri Nagad Narayan)(1955) Singer-Khan Mastana, Lyricist-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Vinod
Lyrics
aata hai yaad mujhko guzra huaa zamaana
aata hai yaad mujhko guzra huaa zamaana
tu thhi meri deewaani
main tha tera deewaana
tu thi meri deewaani
main tha tera deewaana
aata hai yaad mujhko guzra huaa zamaana
chanda ki chaandni mein tu so rahi thi gori
aakar teri gali mein seeti mera bazaana
aata hai yaad mujhko guzra huaa zamaana
khidki mein tera aake chhupchhup ke muskuraana
ab tere ho chuke ham
ye kah ke bhaag jaana
aata hai yaad mujhko guzra huaa zamaana
ik din khabar ye aana
tu ban gayi hai dulhan
doli mein tera jaana ro ro ke mera gaana
laila laila pukaaroon main ban mein aen
meri laila basi mere man mein
laila laila pukaaroon main ban mein aen
meri laila basi mere man mein
laila laila pukaaroon main ban mein
Marta hai koi to mar jaaye

dil kisi ko paa gayaa
dil zara naghmaa sunaa
is zindagi ke saaz par
is zindagi ke saaz par
jhoom uthhey woh bhi zara
ab meri aawaaz par
ab meri aawaaz par
raag apne pyaar ka
kehnewaalaa keh gayaa
raag apne pyaar ka
kehnewaalaa keh gayaa
aaj hai mujhko khushi
jhoomti hai zindagi
jaisey jeenaa aa gayaa
dil kissi ko paa gayaa
keh rahi hai aarzoo
ye mujhse le qaraar tu
mushqil-e-qaraar kyon
ye ghadi na aayegi
dar na baar baar tu
yoon dar na baar baar tu
khatm kar dey faaslaa
keh dey jeenaa aa gayaa
khatm kar dey faaslaa
keh dey jeenaa aa gayaa
aaj hai mujhko khushi
jhoomti hai zindagi
jaisey jeena aa gayaa
dil kisi ko paa gayaa
aaj hai mujhko khushi
jhoomti hai zindagi
jaisey jeena aa gayaa
dil kisi ko paa gayaa
dil kisi ko paa gayaa
dil kisi ko paa gayaa
Uff na karnaa

Hullo Atuldom
“Khoon Ka Badla Khoon” (1978) had songs by the hit team of S.H. Bihari- O.P.Nayyar; the team that gave us “kajra mohabbatwala”, “haule haule chalo more saajna”, taarif karoon kya uski”, “bahut shukriya badi meherbaani” and many more such hits in the ’60s.
“KKBK” had Vani Jairam, Pushpa Pagdhare, Uttara Kelkar, Mohd. Rafi for playback singers. It was directed by K. Parvez a.k.a Kalpataru and produced by Ratan Mohan. It had seven or eight songs of which the blog has only one song.
The cast included Bindu, Asha Sachdev, Mahendra Sandhu, Vinod Khanna, Ajit, Jayshree T., Padma Khanna, Iftekar, Imtiaz Khan, Sudhir etc. Seeing that the movie had so many actresses who could dance, makes it clear why OPN used three different female playback singers.
“KKBK” seems to be one of the movies where Asha Sachdev must have been the main female protagonist or to put it simple -the heroine. Also the poster of the movie suggests that Vinod Khanna may have been paired with Bindu
Here is the next song from ‘KKBK’ on the occasion of Omkar Prasad Nayyar’s 14th remembrance day. It is sung by Vani Jairam. It was and is frequently heard on radio. Vani Jairam had four solos in the movie of which this is the most popular. I found a very short video which suggests that Asha Sachdev is out to woo Mahedra Sandhu who seems to be some kind of under-cover officer. Also the video shows Ajit giving instructions to his ‘No 9’ etc as was the norm in all movies featuring Ajit in that period of time.
The poster that is accompanying the longer version of the song, as is available on youtube shows a rather smart and handsome Vinod Khanna, trying to shoot some one even as he is on the run.
The brief synopsis of the film that is available on IMDB.com says this: The story-line of the film revolves around a Crime Branch’s Officer and a courageous girl from another agency, they are appointed to catch a criminal gang who leaves a trade mark at their every crime scene.
So, that means it was a run-of-the-mill masala thriller that should have been entertaining for the masses. I would love to know how it fared at the box-office.
This is song number 184 of S.H. Bihari and 484 of O P Nayyar who should be thanked for the legacy that is there for us to enjoy

Today (28 January 2021) is the 84rd birthday of Suman Kalyanpur (DoB 28 Jauary 1937). On this occasion, here is a song from “Rivaaj”(1972). This song is sung by Suman LKalyanpur. Indeevar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
The song is lip synced by Mala Sinha and it is picturised as a god bharai ceremony song, as can be guessed from the lyrics of the song. Many people are seen in the picturisation. I can only identify Sanjeev Kumar. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the other actors seen in the picturisation.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.
We take this opportunit to wish Suman Kalyanpur a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day.
