4564 Post No. : 16162

I remember, when I was a growing child, I used to hear the name of film personality called ‘Sajjan’ by elders at home, or likeminded cine-goers who were family friends of my parents.
I used to wonder who exactly this person was in the movies I was watching. It continued for many years and all this while I had no clue about this person.

When I was a grown-up boy (😉) and was studying in 11-12th standard I watched ‘Johny Mera Naam-1970’ in 1983-85. And here for the first time I get to know who exactly the actor named ‘Sajjan’ was. After that whichever movies new and older I watched I enjoyed his performance on screen. In the background his image of a good character actor (that build up in my mind from the discussions at home) was always there in my mind. So, I was also enjoying his negative roles in many black & white movies of fifties and sixties.

Aftergoing through his filmography, I can recall watching many of these movies where he played various roles particularly with negative shades or sometime being the associate of the of the main villain of the movie, or the different character roles.

But before that he had acted as a hero or second to the hero in the movies of fifties and sixties. There is a long list of the movies he was a part of; however, I am not listing them all here today.

Regulars on this blog would wonder why I am discussing Sajjan today. The reason is- today (15 January 2020) is his birth anniversary.

Sajjan Lal Purohit was born on 15th January 1921 in Jaipur, Rajasthan (then Jaipur State of British India). That way today marks his 100th birth anniversary.

I had not read about him in the details and maybe he must have been discussed on the blog which I might not be aware of, so I have taken some information from Wikipedia and reproducing the same here.

Wikipedia mentions that he graduated from the Jaswant College, Jodhpur and he desired to become a lawyer and not an actor.

Wikipedia also mentions the following regarding his career in the movies;

In 1941, he arrived in Calcutta and worked as an apprentice in a laboratory of East India Company. His initial breakthrough in films was as an extra in films such as Masoom (1941) and Chowringhee (1942). Sajjan left Calcutta during World War II and reached Mumbai. In Mumbai he worked as an assistant to famous director Kidar Sharma. At that time, the great showman Raj Kapoor was also worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. He also worked as assistant to Gajanan Jagirdar and Vakil Sahib and got Rs.35 as salary.
A poet by heart, Sajjan showed his talent when he wrote dialogues for Meena (1944) and lyrics for Door Chalen (1946) and Dhanyavad (1948). Sajjan also acted in small roles in Prithvi Theatre. His acting debut film was Dhanyavad. After that, Bombay Theatre’s Muqaddar was released in 1950. The heroine was Nalini Jaywant.
By then Sajjan was well established in the films. In the 1950s and 1960s, Sajjan acted as hero or side-hero in films such as; Sainya, Rail Ka Dibba, Bahana, Sheesha, Malkin, Nirmohi, Kasturi, Mehmaan, Lagan, Girl School, Paridhaan, Ghar-Ghar Mein Diiwali, Haa-Haa-Hee-Hee-Hoo-Hoo, Poonam Jhanjhar and Halla-Gulla. As hero, his last film was Kabuliwala, Do Chor, and as an artist he last appeared in the 1986 release Shatru with Rajesh Khanna. An artist of more than 150 films, Sajjan also worked in TV serials. In Vikram Aur Betaal he played Betaal. His other serial was Lena-Dena.

I had watched many episodes of ‘Vikram Aur Betaal’ on TV and I liked Sajjan playing Betaal very much.

Sajjan passed away at the age of seventy-nine on 17th May’2000 in Mumbai (then Bombay).

As a tribute to him today I am presenting a song from ‘Yaar Mera-1971’ which was picturized on him (part-1 of the song). I had noted this song long time back but recently when I was going through the list of pending songs and came across this song, I watched it again and noted that it was Sajjan who was lip-syncing this song so I thought to present it on his anniversary.

This song is shown happening in a ‘village temple’ as a part of ‘sandhya-aarti-bhajan’ where Sajjan and many others are present (villagers and temple associates). A grief-stricken Jeetendra is also seen taking resort in the temple and sitting in ‘dhyaan’ while listening the ‘bhajan’ and I think he remains in this situation for a long time (😊) because by the time the song ends Jeetendra had a ‘beard’ of many days.

Part-2 of the song is played in the back-ground while Jeetendra is shown lying on a hospital bed, but as the song gets played, he regains some strength to leave the hospital without caring the ‘staff’ present there and reach the temple after crossing ‘fields’ etc.

HFGK mentions this song as a one song and not in parts.

I have not watched this movie so I request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

So far, two songs from this movie ‘Yaar Mera-1971’ have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Let us now listen to today’s song which is from the movie ‘Yaar Mera-1971’ as mentioned above. Lyrics are by Neeraj and music is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
Manna Dey is the singer of this song.

Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (03)
———————————–

My comment on the 900th song post of Geeta Dutt’s songs :

Congratulations on completing 900 songs of Geeta Dutt. Out of the 500 plus songs that remain to covered in the blog, there are many which sound so beautiful. I have made a short list of her duets and solos yet to be posted and it is difficult to decide on one. In fact I wrote down the lyrics of two such song over the weekend.

Like Husnlal-Bhagatram’s songs, I find it difficult to move past an unheard song by Geeta Dutt. Somehow she captivates the listener on first hearing. A truly gifted and versatile artist.

About the diction and singing the words correctly, also she is almost perfect. A case in point is this two version -Geeta and one small Rafi version ‘Lori’ :

https://atulsongaday.me/2020/03/11/so-jaa-re-so-jaa-mere-laal/

This series is about solos and duets of Geeta Dutt, so here is a wonderous soulful solo. If somebody could sound somewhere in between sad and happy, Geeta Dutt would be it. She sounds spirited too at the same time. The moment I heard it for the first time, I wanted to write a post for it.

I have been listening to the song of the previous post too, and keep wondering how that one remained unknown all these decades. While the Talat Mehmood solo from ‘Chhaya’ 1961, having the same tune is a very well-known song.

And now I am thinking, if the tune of this solo also is sounding more familiar than it should. I am not able to pin point if there is another song with similar beat, especially the‘gaaye jaa aa, kuchh gaaye jaa’ bit.

In my previous post I had billed the duets of Geeta dutt with various singers among the posted songs, at below 350. But they would be more than 350. This blog has 521 solos by her posted.

The first solo in this series is the 7th song from the 1949 film “Karwat”. The music director is Hansraj Behl and lyricist is Saifuddin Saif. Present tally of these two in the blog:

Artist Songs posted Total songs
Hansraj Behl 260 62 movies(538)
Saifuddin Saif 1

So, this one is only the second song penned by Saifuddin Saif in the blog. His first song is also from the same movie, so this Poet/lyricist could be a one movie wonder.

Six songs of Karwat(1949) are already posted in the blog:

Song Date posted
Chanda baadal mein baadal mein mukh le chhipa 2 November 2012
Nigaahen milaane milaane ko jee chaahta hai Multiple version song 29 November 2013
Tod ghulaami ki zanjeeren jaage hain insaan 15 August 205
Ek rog laga baithhi main 17 July 2016
Chal diye munh pher kar 28 November 2017

This song is significant for it must have set the tone for the famous club, cabaret, mischievous and teasing songs to come, composed by Music Directors like O P Nayyar and S D Burman and sung by Geeta Dutt. This song too is a gem of a discovery.

Song-Gaa ae dil matwaale jhoom kar saaz uthha le(Karwat)(1949) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Saifuddin Saif, MD-Hansraj Bahl

Lyrics

Gaa ae dil matwaale jhoom kar
saaz uthhaa le
gaaye jaa aa aa aa aa
kuchh gaaye jaa
raaten badi anokhi
yeh din bahot niraale
gaaye jaa aa aa
kuchh gaaye jaa

kyun chaand chakor se door
ghataa mein phire akelaa aa
yeh mast jawaani
koyi din ka melaa
aa kisi se aankh milaa le
jhoom kar saaz uthhaa le
gaaye jaa aa aa aa aa
kuchh gaaye jaa

yeh mast hawaayen kehti hain
milne ki kahaani ee ee
rut beet na jaaye
pyaasi hai jawaani
ik duniyaa nayi basaa le
jhoom kar saaz utthaa le
gaaye jaa aa aa
kuchh gaaye jaa

mehek mehek kar
kali kali ko
phool pukaare ae ae
mastaana hawaa mein
hanste hain sitaare
ab dil ko kaun sambhaale
jhoom kar saaz uthhaa le
gaaye jaa aa aa aa
kuchh gaaye jaa

The song is picturised as a dance song. I can identify the lady as Padma Khanna. I am unable to identify the male dancer. Their dance performance is being witnessed by a housefull audience. I cannot recall any old Hindi stagae dance song where the hall is anything but jampacked. 🙂

The audience also include the lead pair of Kabir Bedi and Simi Garewal.

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors seen in the picturisation.

ith this song, all the songs of “Seema”(1971) are covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered the movie and the movie “Seema”(1971) thus gets YIPPEED in the blog.

kaahe ko pardesiya se

Blog Ten year Challenge, which was started in 2019 and which continued in 2020 as well, now enters 2021. This post is the first post for blog ten year challenge (2011-2021).

January 2011 was quite like January 2021, with only one or two songs being posted everyday. Unlike 2021, we already had DOT days in the year 2011 by 11 january 2011. Thankfully, these days I am very particular about avaoiding DOT days at any cost. As a result, the just concluded year 2020 sa NIL DOT days. The only other year in the bloh]g that had NIL DOT days as the year 2017.

This day on 2011 saw only one song being discussed and that song was a song from “Shola Aur Shabnam”(1961) namely Jeet hi lenge baazi ham tum…pyaar ka bandhan toote naa .

“Shola Aur Shabnam”(1961) was directed by Ramesh Sahgal for Parijat Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Tarla, Dharmendra, Abhi Bhattacharya, M Rajan, Mubarak, Vijaylaxmi, Jeeankala, Sulochana, Leela Mishra, Dhumal, Johny hisky, B N Shukla, B Perera, Baby Chandrkala, Master Akashdeep etc in it.

The movie had ten songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the blog. Here are the details of the songs that have been discussed so far:-

The song under discussion today is sung by Rafi and Jagjeet Kaur. Khayyam is the lyricist. Music is composed by Khayyam.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to thro light on the picturisation of the song. My guess is that the song was picturised on the lead pair of Tarla and Dharmendra.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Song-Pehle to aankh milaana (Shola Aur Shabnam)(1961) Singers-Rafi, Jagjeet Kaur, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Khayyaam

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

pehle to aankh milaana
phir thhoda sa sharmaana
sharma ke chale jaana
are waah waah waah wah
haan
pahle to paas bulaana
thhoda sa pyaar jataana
ghabra ke chale jaana
arre waah waah waah waah

kaise gori apne dil ki baat labon par laaun
arre kaise gori apne dil ki baat labon par laaun
husn tumhaara bijli jaisa
dekh ke main darr jaaun
main ik hindustani chhori
main kyun pyaar jataaun
main ik hindustani chhori
main kyun pyaar jataaun
itna kar sakti hoon
tujhko dekhoon aur muskaaun

ghoonghat pat ko sarkaana
phir thhoda sa muskaana
muskaa ke chale jana
arre waah waah waah waah
pahle to paas bulaana
thhoda sa pyaar jataana
ghabra ke chale jaana
arre waah waah waah waah

in aankhon ko o gori
tu kitni achchi laage
in aankhon ko o gori
tu kitni achchi laage
hum jaison se aakhir kyun tu haath chhudaakar bhaage
jab tu hans kar aankh milaaye
dil ye dhadkan laage
jab tu hans kar aankh milaaye
dil ye dhadkan laage
jee chaahe main sharmaaker dil rakh doon tere aage

pehle ban thhan ke aana
hamen thoda sa tarsaana
tarsaa ke chale jaana
are waah waah waah waah
kamaal hai
pehle to paas bulaana
thhoda sa pyaar jataana
ghabra ke chale jaana
arre waah waah waah waah

pehle to aankh milaana
phir thhoda sa sharmaana
sharma ke chale jaana
arre waah waah waah waah

It can be seen from the table of 1962 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 129 songs in movies released in 1962. As many as 118 of these songs have already been covered in the blog. Out of 40 movies of 1962 where Lata Mangeshkar sang, all Lata Mangeshkar songs of 31 movies are alreday covered. So we only have 11 Lata songs belonging to 9 movies of 1962 that remain as yet undiscussed in the blog.

Alphabetically the first such movie that offers us Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Baghdad Ki Raaten”(1962). This fantasy movie was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt for Manoj Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Shakila, Mahipal, Neeru, Isharlal, Ratnmala, Nagpal, Keshri,, R S Dubey, Leela Mishra, Vimal, Leela Gandhi, Mastan (tiger), Bhagan, Abu Hasan etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar had sung three solo songs in it. One of these songs has been covered in the past.

Here is another Lata solo from “Baghdad Ki Raaten”(1962). Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Dilip Dholakiya.

This is a rare song. Listening to this song, the first thought that crossed my mind was that this song is a hidden gem that deserved to be better known. It is sad that the song has ended up as an obscure rare song.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 119 #
——————————————-——

Today’s song is from an unreleased movie ‘Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan’.

The slogan reminds us of our beloved Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri whose life has been an inspiration for many. He had given this slogan during the Indo-Pak war in 1965. This slogan has been popular since then. This Indo-Pak war incidentally ended on 10th January’1966 with the ‘Tashkent Agreement’ (in USSR).

Coming back to today’s movie HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions ‘Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan’ in the Appendix-I, which have the list of movies which were possibly made during the decade of 1971 to 1980.

However, this movie also seems to be an obscure movie as very less details about this movie are available in HFGK.

‘Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan’ was a ‘Narayan Pictures, Madras’ presentation. No details about its cast and director are available.

HFGK lists two songs from this movie written by Qamar Sayeed which were composed to music by A.A. Raj. P.B. Shriniwas, S. Janaki and Yesudas were the singers giving playback in the above movie.

Today’s song is sung by Yesudas who celebrates his eighty-first birth anniversary today (born on 10th January’1940).
We wish him a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead.

I came across this song during the preparation of my earlier article on Yesudas on the blog in 2019.

I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light about this movie and its songs as possible.

Till then let us enjoy the today’s less heard (or never heard) song sung by Yesudas.

The song is quite nice and hummable.

With this song ‘Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan’ (UR) (1971) makes its debut on the blog.

Song-Dilruba kya hua mujhe ye bata (Jai Jawaan Jai Kisaan)(1971)(UR) Singer-Yesudas, Lyrics-Qamar Sayeed, MD-A A Raj

Lyrics

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm mm
hmm mm mm mm mm
dilrubaa
kyaa huaa
mujhe ae ye bataa
chaandni raat hai
suhaana aa samaa
meri zindagi mein
nayaa gul khilaa
dilrubaa
kyaa huaa
mujhe ae ye bataa aa

tere waaste
chaand taare lutaa doon
teri raah mein apni
aankhen bichhaa doon
zamaane ki tujhko
nazar lag na jaaye
tujhe apni baahon mein
aajaa chhupaa loon
yahi aarzoo jaan e jaan
sadaa muskuraa
meri zindagi mein
nayaa gul khilaa
dilrubaa
kyaa huaa
mujhe ae ye bataa aa

zaraa dekh le
beqaraaron ki duniya
badalne lagi
gham ke maaron ki duniya
mujhe aapne dil diyaa
bahot shukriyaa
meri zindagi mein
nayaa gul khilaa
dilrubaa
kyaa huaa
mujhe ye bataa aa
chaandni raat hai
suhaana samaa
meri zindagi mein
nayaa gul khilaa
dilrubaa

Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (02)
————————————–————————————–

Among Geeta Dutt’s endearing songs, there are innumerable duets. Maximum no. of her duets is bound to be with Mohammed Rafi sahab, for the obvious reason that at the times she was most active, coincides with the period when various music directors were having all male songs sung by Rafi sahab. So there are films where Rafi sahab has duets with Lata, Asha and Geeta, plus solos by all of them, with a female duet also thrown it. This would be a typical late 50’s music score. Sometimes a female singer or two are changed and Shamshad Begum is there, with one solo and/or duet.

Looking for major co-singers for Geeta Dutt among the 900 songs already posted in the blog, I have found this list:

Geeta Dutt duets with major playback singers Total duets in the blog
Rafi Geeta Dutt Duets 111
Talat Mehmoood Geeta Dutt duets 21
Lata Geeta Dutt duets 17
Kishore Kumar Geeta Dutt duets 13
Geeta Dutt-Asha Bhonsle duets 25
Mukesh Geeta Dutt duets 14
Shamshad Begam-Geeta Dutt duets 9
Manna Dey Geeta Dutt duets 17
Hemant Kumar Geeta Dutt duets 19
Geeta Dutt Mahendra Kapoor duets 7
G M Durrani Geeta Dutt duets 16
C Ramchandra Geeta Dutt duets 5

While no other singer is crossing the 25 mark in the blog, the duets with Rafi sahab are at 111, so far and counting. I was surprised to find so few with Mukesh at 14 and Shamshad Begum at 9. Mukesh is at 792/932, so the possibility of few more duets with Geeta Dutt is there. Shamshad Begum is at 701/1273, so maybe a few more of these female duets are out there, waiting their turn.

I found this very nice sad melancholy duet of hers with Talat Mehmood. Considering that 386 out of 450 songs of Talat Mehmood are posted in the blog, I am glad to have found not one but two duets of these two. Even then I am optimistic that these two can reach the figure of 25. Presently they are at 21, plus the two song I have found, makes it 23. Let us see where the tally will reach finally.

This song from the film ‘Dr. Z’ is written by Akhtar Romani, and composed by Manohar Arora. These 4 songs of this film are already posted in the blog.

Song Posted on
Hello sweety seventeen 9 September 2011
Ye bheegi bheegi raat gagan par taaron ki baaraat 31 October 2018
Main hoon bhaiyya dim timkar 1 March 2019
Bhagwaan ik insaan ki sunaata hoon kahaani 17 November 2020

Geeta Dutt has three duets to sing in this film one each with Mohammed Rafi, S. Balbir and Talat Mehmood. With this post all three duets by Geeta Dutt in this movie are posted.

Out of 900 odd songs already posted, I can guess less than 350 are duets. Going by this trend remaining 500 songs of Geeta Dutt, 80+ songs with Rafi appeared unlikely, so as to make them 200. I have counted total 147 songs of these two including group songs. So roughly less than 20 duets of Geeta Dutt-Rafi are still at large, we have to catch them sooner or later :-).

The tune of the song reminds me of this 1961 song.

Song-Dil ko laga ke bhool ki dil ka nishaan mitaa diya (Dr Z)(1959) Singers-Geeta Dutt, Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Akhtar Romani, MD-Manohar Arora

Lyrics

dil ko laga ke bhool ki ee
dil ka nisha mita diya aa
dil ka nishaan mita diya
humne bhari bahaar mein
apna chaman jala diya aa
apna chaman jala diya
(aa aa aa aa)

duniya ki har jafa sahi
kuchh bhi magar na keh sake
duniya ki har jafa sahi
kuchh bhi magar na keh sake
humne wafa ke naam par
jo kuchh bhi thha luta diya aa
jo kuchh bhi thha luta diya(aa aa aa aa aa)

shiqwa kisi se kya karen
marzi hai ye naseeb ki
shiqwa kisi se kya karen
marzi hai ye naseeb ki
chaaha jise mita diya
chaaha jise bana diya
dil ka nishaan mita diya
(aa aa aa aa aa)

leke falak ke chaand ko
koi kare to kya kare
leke falak ke chaand ko
koi kare to kya kare
apna bhi ek chaand thha
duniya ne jo chhupa diya aa
duniya ne jo chhupa diya(aa aa aa aa aa)

kis ko khabar thhi pyaar mein
jal jal ke khaaq honge hum
kis ko khabar thhi pyaar mein
jal jal ke khaaq honge hum
khaaq ka kya jahaan mili
jisko mili uda diya aa
jisko mili uda diya
(aa aa aa aa)
hamne bhari bahaar mein
apna chaman jala diya aa
apna chaman jala diya
(aa aa aa aa)
