Blog Day :

4518 Post No. : 16075

Some regulars of the blog are more keen eyed than most people and they keep looking for important events taking place in the blog. One important event happened in the blog yesterday. I became aware of it mainly because some regulars pointed it out in our whatsapp group.

On this day in the afternoon, the blog silently registered its 14 millionth visitor. The blog began 12 years ago on 19 july 2008 and it took the blog 4517 days to reach this magic figure on 29 november 2020.

Here is a summary of all the million visitors that have taken place in the blog so far :-

Visitor number Date achieved Blog day number Days taken for the million hits Remarks
1 million 25 October 2010 829 829 Slowest one million @ 1206 visitors per day
2 millions 7 November 2011 1207 378 @2645 visitors per day
3 millions 7 April 2012 1359 152 Fastest one million @ 6579 visitors per day
4 millions 10 December 2012 1606 247 @ 4049 visitors per day
5 millions 29 October 2013 1929 323 @3096 visitors per day
6 millions 12 October 2014 2277 348 @2873 visitors per day
7 millions 4 July 2015 2542 265 @ 3773 visitors per day
8 millions 20 April 2016 2833 291 @ 3436 visitors per day
9 millions 24 February 2017 3143 310 @ 3226 visitors per day
10 millions 14 January 2018 3467 324 @ 3086 visitors per day
11 millions 22 November 2018 3779 312 @ 3205 visitors per day
12 millions 4 July 2019 4003 224 @ 4464 visitors per day
13 millions 8 February 2020 4222 219 @ 4566 visitors per day
14 millions 29 November 2020 4517 295 @ 3390 visitors per day

Overall rate of visitors till now is 3099 visitors per day.

The above table shows that the blog, despite dealing in a non populist topic in a non TRP seeking manner, still draws a regular stream of visitors. It certainly serves as a source of encouragement for us.

I remember that the blog used to have visitors in trickles (in double figures in a day) during its early days. It was on 16 august 2008 that the blog touched three figures in a day for the first time. It was on 23 january 2009 (189th day of the blog) when more than one thousand visitors visited the blog for the first time. 5 August 2009 saw more than 2000 visitors for the first time in a day. The blog has even seen over ten thousand visits in a day. Here are the details:-

Date Number of visitors Blog day Remarks
19 July 2008 4 1 Only four visitors on the first day. Only occasion of single digit visitors in a day
20 July 2008 12 2 First time the blog reached double figure of visitors on the second day of the blog
16 August 2008 253 29 First time the blog reached three figures of visitors in a day
23 January 2009 1145 189 First time the blog reached four figures of visitors in a day
29 August 2009 2071 407 First time the blog reached 2000 visitors in a day
15 July 2011 3060 1092 First time the blog reached 3000 visitors in a day
4 October 2011 4137 1173 First time the blog reached 4000 visitors in a day
7 October 2011 5379 1176 First time the blog reached 5000 visitors in a day
9 October 2011 6082 1178 First time the blog reached 6000 visitors in a day
10 October 2011 7561 1179 First time the blog reached 7000 visitors in a day
12 October 2011 9824 1181 First time the blog reached 8000 visitors in a day
12 October 2011 9824 1181 First time the blog reached 9000 visitors in a day
19 October 2011 10630 1188 First and only time the blog reached 10000 visitors in a day

It took the blog more than 1000 days before it could get 3000 plus visitors in a day. But then all of a sudden, the blog touched heights of 4000 plus, 5000 plus, 6000 plus, 7000 plus, 8000 plus , 9000 plus and 10000 plus visits in a day in the month of October 2011, all within 15 days !

All these figures are interesting figures and they have been achieved without making any conscious attempts. In fact, we are not even aware how and why these visitors find us. All we know from wordpress stats is that the blog gets hits from all around the globe. Indiais the major country where this blog gets viewed the most and USA comes second. Other major countries from where this blog gets viewed are UK, Pakistan, Malaysia, Canada, UAE, Mauritius, Australia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, South Africa etc.

All we can conclude from the above is that Hindi movie music, especially those created decades ago, enjoy good following all around the world among music lovers of Indian origin and sometimes even among non Indian origin persons. People who are looking for difficult to find songs are likely to find their way into the blog. Some of them, after stumbling upon the blog may decide to bookmark the blog for further reference.

It gives us encouragement to find that we are visited even by people who are themselves associated with HFM and they sometimes post messages in the blog or contact us as well.

The figures about visitors to the blog are in a way a reflection on the fact that the work being done in the blog for old HF songs is being noticed and appreciated. And this is just the reward that we, like most normal human beings seek. Such appreciation is just the tonic that keeps us motivated and make us do this work regularly without taking any breaks.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Ek Shrimaan Ek Shrimati”(1969). This song is sung by Rafi and Lata. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Only the audio of the song is available as of now. This movie was produced by Surinder Kapoor and directed by Bhappi Sanie for Amar Chhaya Productions. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Babita, Kamini Kaushal, Om Prakash, Helen, Rajendra Nath, Laxmi Chhaya, Mumtaz Begum, Mohan Choti, Dhumal, Hari Shivdasani, Sudhir, Sulochana Latkar, Sujata, Snehlata, Jagadish Kamal, Maqbool, Devi Chand, Baba Benjamin, Shobha, Madan Kenny etc in it. So, my guess is that thd song was picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Babita. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 97
———————————————————————————–

‘Jab Se Tumhe Dekha Hai-1963’ is an eligible movie under the ‘Blog Ten Year Challenge’ today (30 november 2020) as one of its songs was posted on 30.11.2010.

Though one song of this movie was also posted on 18.11.2010, we missed the opportunity of discussing its song on that day ten years later. Our dear Prakash ji had already sent lyrics for two songs to cover these two occasions. Today gives us another opportunity of covering a song from this movie under the “Blog Ten Year Challenge” series.

Following six posts were published this day ten years ago on 30 november 2010:-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Jhoome re kali bhanwraa ulajh gayaa kaanton mein Naukri-1954 All songs covered
Hamko hanste dekh zamaanaa jalta hai Ham Sab Chor Hain- 1956 All songs covered

Ye din din hain khushi ke Jabse Tumhe Dekha Hai-1963 03 songs posted
Hamse hoti muhabbat jo tumko Muhabbat Isko Kehte Hain-1965 All songs covered

Though the blog scored a ‘sixer’ on the last day of the month of that year 2010 it left ‘three balls’ without scoring a single run 😊 i.e. 27th, 28th & 29th November’2010 were the ‘dot’ days for the blog. Still it managed to hit a century with this ‘six’ on the last day of the month. Total score of posts of November’2010 is 105. (Things like this happen in Hindi movies or specially in ‘MKD’ movies 😊

Now, in the current month, the blog is still struggling at sixty-one posts till the time of writing of this post.

Let us just take a quick look at how the blog has so far been performing in the month of November in previous years since its ‘inception’;

S.No. Year No of posts
01 2008 126
02 2009 96
03 2010 105
04 2011 166

HFGK Vol-IV mentions the following seven songs in this movie, all written by Shailendra and composed by Datttram.

So far, only three songs from this movie ‘JAB SE TUMHE DEKHA HAI-1963’ have been posted on the blog; (highlighted with their links)

Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be presented on the blog. It is sung by Mohd Rafi and Asha Bhonsle.

Let us enjoy today’s lovely nok jhonk song and close November’2020 on a happy note for the ‘Blog Ten Year Challenge’ and move on to December …

If we look at the statistics of the month of November over the years, this will be the first November where number of posts cross fifties and do not not enter nineties. 😊 Out of twelve Novembers so far, seven have scored centuries, two closed in the forties, and three in nineties. This, the thirteenth November for the blog seems to be ending in the sixties today …

over to the song now …

Lyrics of this song have been sent by Prakashchandra.

arrey rey rey rey rey

ae dilruba
haaye haaye ye kya ho gayaa…aa
haaye haaye ye kya ho gayaa
dekho apni daayeen jeb mein

mushkil ki raat mein
rehta tha saath mein
mera woh dil bholaabhala…aa
ho o o o o
chhootaa kis baat pe
nikla kyon haath se
hoga kahin kuchh ghotaalaa

dum bhar main sapnon mein kho gaya
itne mein dil paar ho gayaa
ye to duniya ka usool hai
chhoti si woh bhool bhool hai

dil kho gayaa aa..aa..aaa
dhoondhoon kahaan

ae dilruba
haaye haaye ye kya ho gayaa

hoye hoye hoye hoye hoye hoye
gham hai din raat ka
itni si baat ka
mera woh dil thha tumhaara aa
ho ho o
mera khayaal hai
mere mizaaz se dar ke chhupa hai bechaaraa

mera bigdaa haal dekhiye
behki behki chaal dekhiye
sheeshaa leke shaql dekhiye
mil jaayein to akal dekhiye

dil kho gayaa aa
dhoondhoon kahaan
dhoondhoon kahaan
ae dilruba
haaye haaye ye kya ho gayaa

ho ho o
anjaani raah par
khud se wo bekhabar
phirta tha aksar aawaaraa

alley alley alley alley alley alley
woh to naadaan thha
jag se anjaan thha
jaataa kahaan besahaaraa aa
shaayad uss ko saath mil gaya
chhupke woh Bambai chal diya

Bambai woh kis liye jaayega
kaun usey actor banaayega
dil kho gayaa aa
dhoondhoon kahaan
dhoondhoon kahaan
ae dilruba
haaye haaye ye kya ho gayaa…aa aa

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part X: Year 1956
———————————————————————————————————

No we have reached part ten of this ambitious series. Lata Mangeshkar sang her first Hindi film songs in 1946. She sang just four songs that year and 5 songs the next year. By the time she completed one decade of her career, she had already sung more than one thousand songs in HFM, becoming the first playback singer to achieve this feat.

1956 was the eleventh year of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer in Hindi movies. In other words she entered the second decade of her HFM career this year. If she had sung 4 songs in 3 movies in 1946, 1956 saw her singing a whopping 204 songs in 49 movies.

Here are the details of songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Hindi movies released in 1956 :-

Statistically, this was the third most prolific year till then for Lata Mangeshkar. This year she sang 204 songs.

In 1956, she gave playback in 49 movies. 120 movies were released in 1956 and they contained 765 songs. So Lata Mangeshkar gave plaback in 41 % of the movies released in 1956 and her voice appeared in 27 % of the songs created that year !

In 1956, Lata Mangeshkar worked with 24 music directors and 27 lyricists. She worked with six music directors for the first time this year. They were Bipin Babul, Kamal Mitra, Mukesh, S K Pal, Sanmukh babu Upadhyay and Vishwanathan Ramamurthy. This year, she worked with three lyricists for the first time. They were B D Mishra, Manoharlal Khanna and S P Kalla.

By the end of 1956, Lata Mangeshkar had sung 1548 songs in 375 movies. The blog contains 1278 of these songs. By the end of 1955, she had worked with 85 Music directors and 109 lyricists.

Here is the summary of her playback career in Hindi movies till end of 1956 :

One can see that Lata Mangeshkar sang in 49 movies that were released in 1956. All Lata Mangeshkar songs have been covered in 30 of these movies. So we only have 19 movies of 1956 left from which Lata Mangeshkar songs can still be covered.

Alphabetically the first such movie is “26th January”(1956). This movie was produced and directed by Ramesh Sahgal for Sahgal Productions, Bombay. The movie had Nalini Jaiwant, Ajeet, Johny Walker, Sapru, B M Vyas, Leela Mishra, Cuckkoo, Balraj Mehta Chamanpuri, Nishi (debutant) etc in it. The movie also had guest appearances by Gajanan Jaageerdaar, Jagdeesh Sethi, Randheer, Gyani and Patanjali.

The movie had seven songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog. The movie had five Lata solos. Both songs covered in the blog were Lata solo songs.

Here is the third Lata solo song from “26th January”(1956) to appear in the blog. This song, sung by Lata Mangeshkar is penned by Rajinder Krishan. C Ramchandra is the music director.

Incidentally, Rajinder Krishan by 1956 had penned 255 songs for Lata Mangeshkar and C Ramchandra had composed 237 Lata Mangeshkar songs. They were the top most lyricists and music director respectively as far as working with Lata Mangeshkar till that time was concerned.

Listening to this song tells me that we still have lots and lots of forgotten gems left unexplored. I listened to this song for the first time only just now.

‘Jeena Yahaan’ (1979) haa an impressive list of actors of the new wave films but I do not recall having read or heard about this film. So, I recently watched this film on a video sharing platform. The story of the film was interesting and was in keeping with Basu Chatterjee’s favourite subject – the lives of middle-class people in urban setting.

‘Jeena Yahaan’ (1979) was produced under the banner of Jamu Productions and was directed by Basu Chatterjee. The star cast included Shabana Azmi, Shekhar Kapoor, Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Dina Pathak, Kiran Vairale, Vidya Sinha, Devendra Khandelwal, Arvind Deshpande etc. The film was based on a short story written by a well-known Hindi writer, Mannu Bhandari. Incidentally, Basu Chatterjee’s ‘Rajnigandha’ (1974) was also based on Mannu Bhandari’s short story, ‘Yahi Sach Hai’. She has also written screen-play of the film ‘Swaami’ (1977), directed by Basu Chatterjee. Incidentally, Basu Chatterjee’s maiden directorial venture, ‘Saara Aakash’ (1969) was based on the first part of Rajendra Yadav’s novel of the same name. Rajendra Yadav is the husband of Mannu Bhandari.

Mannu Bhandari is one of the pioneers of Hindi literary movement called ‘Nayi Kahaani’ (New Story). Under this movement, stories are written based on the real-life experiences. She generally writes short stories on middle class women who is financially independent and intellectually capable to share the responsibilities on equal footing with men. Most of the character in her short stories are woman-centric. I have given story-writer’s background just to give an idea as to how the story in the film unfolds.

Shekhar (Shekhar Kapoor) and Lekha (Shabana Azmi) are from small towns who had made Mumbai their work place. Both are in love with each other and wants to get married. But their families are against this marriage because both belong to different castes. One day, both of them get married under Special Marriage Act, without the knowledge of their respective parents and start living in a small rented tenement. In the evening they spend time with their theatre friends with Sushma (Zarina Wahab) and Dinesh (Amol Palekar) being part of their friend circle, among others.

Sushma and Dinesh love each other but Sushma’s father is against this marriage. The real cause for the opposition to the marriage is that Sushma is the only bread-winner for the family, her father being unemployed for months. Both of them are encouraged by Shekhar and Lekha to get registered marriage which they follow and a date is decided for the registered marriage. In the group, there is Sipra (Vidya Sinha) who has lost her husband at a very young age with a small kid to look after. Lekha encourages her to start a play school for the small children and arranges the students and a place to start the play school. She is helped by her theater friends. (I think, the characters of Sushma, Dinesh and Sipra have been introduced just to jextapose the problems which have been faced by Shekhar and Lekha).

In all these efforts and also due to change of climate from town to Mumbai, Lekha is not keeping good health. Shekhar advises her to visit his parent’s house in a small town for few days for a change which she reluctantly agrees. Earlier, she had visited the place with Shekhar after the marriage for a very short stay. This time, Lekha stays for a longer period and during the initial period, she is quite happy with open sky, greenery all around and more importantly, the easy life away from the hustle bustle of Mumbai.

Within a few days of her stay, Lekha realises that all is not well in the house. The house has been divided into two parts with one part being occupied by Shekhar’s uncle and his family. Shekhar’s house is run by his mother (Dina Pathak) and Lekha’s mother-in-law (here after I will call her as ‘matriarch’) who is the final decision-maker in the house. Her father-in-law (Arvind Deshpande) has no say in the running of the house.

Shekhar’s younger brother, Shanker who is studying for BA wants to change his spectacles as his number has changed and he is getting head-ache. But his mother is not prepared to spend money for a new spectacles. On the other hand, she is prepared to spend money for some rituals to be conducted by a swami. Lekha tries to convince the matriarch by saying that Shankar’s study will be affected but it is of no use as she thinks that Shanker wanted to change the spectacle for more fashionable frame. (This shows the misplaced priorities for spending money in a rural/semi-urban setting).

In the house, the elder daughter-in-law who has become widow is looked down by the mother-in-law. Her younger brother, Diwakar (Devendra Khandelwal) occasionally visit her widow sister in the pretext of enquiring her well-being. But the real reason for this visit is to meet Gauri (Kiran Vairale), the younger sister of Shekhar. Both like each other but the matriarch is against Gauri meeting him since he happens to be the brother of her elder daughter-in-law whom she hates. With all these problems, Lekha feels suffocated even under the vast open place and a leisure life. She thinks of returning to Mumbai.

The matriarch finally decides to get Gauri married to a widower who is almost double the age of Gauri. Lekha tries to convince the matriarch that Gauri should get married to Diwakar who not only loves Gauri, but is also educated. Again, the matriarch has her own way and fix the date for Gauri’s marriage with a widower. Lekha is frustrated. She has to stop this marriage. Since Lekha has already decided to return to Mumbai, she tells both Gauri and Diwakar to run away from the town and board the same train in which she is returning to Mumbai. While Gauri agrees, Diwakar develops cold feet and politely refuse to become the part of the escape to Mumbai with Gauri. Lekha has no option but to take Gauri with her to Mumbai to stop her forcible marriage to a aged widower. In this plan, she takes into confidence, the matriarch’s sister-in-law and her elder daughter-in-law.

In Mumbai, Sushma and Dinesh have got married and are staying in Shekhar’s house while Lekha was out of Mumbai. They are happy as their parent have reconciled to the marriage. Shekhar and Lekha offer Dinesh and Sushma to continue to stay in their house until they find a house for themselves. She consoles Gauri that they will look for a suitable bridegroom for her in Mumbai. The film ends with Lekha’s dialogues as under:

‘Hum log yahin achche hain.
Ye muthi bhar aasmaan, ye chhoti si jagah
Lekin yahaan din mein hosla to hai’

[We are happy here (in Mumbai).
A fistful of sky, a small room.
But here there is an encouragement to survive].

I liked two aspects of the film. First, the director has refrained from showing the usual quarrelsome relationship between mother-in-law (Dina Pathak) and the daughter-in-law, Lekha (Shabana Azmi). The villainous elements in mother-in-law is visible but these do not turn into conflicts as Lekha treats her mother-in-law as a product of a small town and understands her psychology. Mother-in-law on the other hand restrains herself while dealing with Lekha as she realises that Lekha is not only financially independent but she is also educated to deal with such situations.

The second aspect of the film which I like is that there is element of realism when Lekha plans the escapes of Gauri and Diwakar to get married in Mumbai by registered marriage. That Diwakar develops cold feet to this plan is in keeping with the psychology of the small town where societal pressure can make the life of his parents miserable if he runs away with a bride to be. Whether Diwakar would eventually comes to Mumbai to get married to Gauri or not has been kept open in the film with a dialogue that if Diwakar does not turn up, Lekha and her friends would arrange for a suitable bridegroom for her.

The entire film is centered around the character of Shabana Azmi with Dina Pathak getting a fairly good exposure in the film. Shekhar Kapoor has early presence in the film. But during Lekha’s visit to town, he is no whre to be seen in the film. Finally, he comes back in the frame only towards the end of the film. The performance of Kiran Vairale as Gauri is very good despite this being her maiden film as per the credit titles. Rest of the cast like Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, Vidya Sinha, are guest artists in the film.

This film reminded me that there was an adorable actress, Kiran Vairale who has left her mark in the films like ‘Naram Garam’ (1981), ‘Saath-Saath’ (1982), ‘Namkeen’ (1982), ‘Lorie’ (1984), ‘Saagar’ (1985) etc, suddenly vanished from the Hindi films. I checked her filmography and came to know that she has not been seen in films after 1986.

The only personal information I knew about Kiran Vairale at the time of her entry into films was that she was the daughter of Madhusudan Vairale, who was a cabinet minister in Government of Maharashtra and later a Member of Parliament of Indian National Congress from Akola. I found an interview of her, published in E-Times of India, January 28, 2017 which gave me some idea about her filmy career and why she left the films sometime in mid-1980s.

Kiran Vairale was exposed to acting for the first time in 1972 when she was in class XI at St. Anns High School, in Fort, Mumbai. Farooque Shaikh who was to direct a short play for the school, came to her class and out of of those called for audition, she was selected for the lead role in a 45-minute play, ‘Mirza Sahibaan’. After her matriculation, Kiran Vairale joined St Xavier’s College where Farooque Shaikh had studied and had formed Hindi drama/music group. She participated in inter-college dramas.

It was her association with IPTA from 1975 to 1984 which gave Kiran Vairale to brush up her acting. In IPTA, she did four plays with Farooque Shaikh, one among them was ‘Doosra Aadmi’ by Sagar Sarhadi. Later, the play was made into a film by Yashraj Films in 1977 in which she had a side role. Due to her IPTA connection, she got roles in many films during 1977-84, most of which were from top banners.

During her short tenure in Hindi films (1977-86), Kiran Vairale acted in 19 films some of which I have already mentioned above. In addition, she worked in one Kannada film ‘Pallavi Anu Pallavi’ (1983). In most of the films, she got the side roles like hero’s sister or heroine’s friend.

Sometime in the middle of 1980s, Kiran Vairale got married to Syed Fahd Asad Mumtaz, a nephew of Dilip Kumar (his sister, Taj Mumtaz’s son) and migrated to USA. Presently, Kiran Vairale (now Kiran Mumtaz) owns and runs one of the largest immigrant-based recruitment advertising agencies in New York.

Since I have also discussed Kiran Vairale in the article, I am presenting the song, ‘o shaam aayi rango mein rangi huyi’ from ‘Jeena Yahaan’ (1979), sung by Lata Mangeshkar which is picturised on Kiran Vairale. The song is written by Yogesh which is set to music by Salil Chowdhury.

It is a boat song in which Shabana Azmi is seen along with Devendra Khandelwal (Kiran Vairale’s love interest in the film) and Desh Maheshwari in the role of Kiran Vairale’s brother.

This is the second song of the film (out of 3 songs) to appear on the Blog. The video clip has got full song but sound quality is not so good while audio clip does not have 3rd antara of the song but sound quality is good.

Today’s song is from the film Sautela Bhai-62. The film was made by Alok Bharti, Bombay. It was directed by Mahesh Kaul and Anil Biswas provided the Music. The cast of the film was, Guru Dutt, Pranoti Bhattacharya, Bipin Gupta, Rajkumar, Ratna, Honey Irani, Sarosh Irani, Asit Sen, Bela Bose, Kanhaiyalal etc.etc.

The film was based on a famous novel in Bangla- ” Baikunther will “, written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. Many people mix up this novel with another novel- ” Krishnakanter will “, written by Bankim chandra Chatterjee. Films were made on both the novels. This reminds me that in 1932, Bharat Laxmi Pictures of Calcutta had made a film ” Krishkanter will” in Bangla language. When I went into details, I found that a silent film was also made on this novel in 1927 and a Talkie was made in 1932. One more film was also made in 2007. Even a Tamil film was made on this novel -Rohini in 1953. Its storyline was woven around a forged will and it was very popular. Comparatively, Baikunther will was made only once in Bangla and now this in Hindi. This novel was based on a family issue.

The screenplay and dialogues of film Sautela Bhai-62 were by Dev Kishen and Mahesh Kaul had directed it. The story of film Sautela Bhai-62 was….

Baikunth Muzumdar (Bipin Gupta) is a small time grocery merchant, having property and money in a village. After his first wife’s death, who has borne him a child, he gets marries again to Bhawani (Pranoti Bhattacharya). Contrary to everybody’s fears, Bhawani gives her love to Gokul, the infant. When she gets her own son, Vinod, both brothers love each other, like Ram-Laxman. Gokul (Guru Dutt) looks after family business, while Vinod (Rajkumar Khatri) goes to Calcutta for college studies. There, he gets into bad company and starts drinking etc.

Meanwhile, Baikunth dies after making a will, giving all property to Gokul, on wife’s instructions, as she is sure that Gokul will look after Vinod very well. When Vinod comes back, he is taunted by Gokul’s wife and father in law (Kanhaiyalal). Vinod thinks that, being a step brother, Gokul has instigated this. He leaves the house with his mother against her will. He also plans to put a case against Gokul.

When Gokul learns all this, he goes to Vinod’s house, drags him out, beats him and gives away all the property to him in exchange of his love, which he professes with tears. Seeing all this, Vinod repents and realises how much Gokul loves him. He begs pardon and then all is well in the end.

In the star cast, you find 2 names Rajkumar and Sarosh Irani. I remember, when I was new in this Blog group, there was a discussion in 2011 about who this Rajkumar was. It was only later, when I started my research on my project ” Same Name Confusion”, I found that this Rajkumar was different from the ” Jaani” wala Rajkumar.

In fact, I found that there were 5 Rajkumars operating at the same time in the film industry, causing so much confusion that filmology details were mixed up of everybody. The first was Kannada Hero Dr. Rajkumar. However, he never worked in any Hindi film, so no confusion about him.The second was the famous Dialogue master Raaj Kumar ‘Jaani’. Third was Rajkumar Gupta ( from Ranchi), who was the main character in popular film Jagriti-54. He never worked again in any film. Fourth was Raj(u) Kumar, a junior artist, who did minor roles- mostly uncredited-in films like Shri 420-55, Jagte Raho-56. Dilli ka Thug-58, Aaj aur kal-63, Ziddi-64 etc etc..The fifth was this Rajkumar, who mostly worked in Religious and Mythological films. His name was Rajkumar Khatri.

Rajkumar khatri may have been born in or around 1940. He started as a child artiste in films like Janmashtami-50, Jai Mahakali-51 and Insaan-52. His first film as an adult was Shuk Rambha-53, in which he did the role of young Shukdev. He was a fine actor, not extraordinary, but there was something special about his screen presence. Apart from his boyish looks, he had an unspoken charm and emanated an inherent goodness. In his second film “Tulsidas”-54 he played the role of Shri Ram. He was hardly 15-16 year old then. This must be the youngest and most boyish looking Shri Ram ever seen on the screen !

Rajkumar khatri acted in 61 films, mostly Religious and Mythological films (47 to be precise). Not that he did not work in any social films, but such films were less. He was seen in films like Sautela Bhai-62, Aaj aur kal-63, Ustadon ke ustad-63, Ziddi-64, Nai umer ki nai fasal-65 etc etc. Due to his young looks, boyish face and innocent looks, he was generally given roles of younger brother. As Laxman, he acted in 7 films. His last film was probably Chintamanee Surdas-87.

In the mid 80s, when film offers became scarce, he joined Prakash Mehra as an assistant. He used to live in Chembur. He was known as Chhota Rajkumar in the industry. He worked with Prakash Mehra for a long time, as Assistant Director and as also his P.A. Reportedly, he died in September 2014. No further information on him was available. (Thanks to maitrimanthan.com for information.)

Now let us come to the other name Sarosh Irani. Normally the filmgoers are aware of Daisy Irani, Honey Irani or Aruna Irani. Few people even knew Menaka Irani, but hardly anyone knows about Sarosh Irani. Being an unusual name we debated earlier whether this is a Girl’s name or Boy’s. Here is some information on Him….

Sarosh was born to Perin and Noshir Irani on 7 August, 1948 in Bombay. He is third among five siblings, namely, Menka, Bunny, Sarosh, Daisy and Honey. In 1979 he married Mona and the couple is blessed with two lovely daughters, Sabah and Delnaaz. He did his initial schooling in Deolali’s well-known boarding school, The Barnes School. After he joined the film industry he went to St. Teresa’s High School in Bandra.
Sarosh’s first film as a child-actor was Masoom released in 1960. He was finalised to play the eldest of the three siblings in the film. Little Honey Irani was chosen to play his younger sister. The song ‘Nani Teri Morni Ko Mor Le Gaye‘ picturized on her, sung by Ranu Mukherjee.

Sarosh says “Satyen Bose was a good Director. He had a lot of patience, he would wait till we gave the shot just like he had visualised. He would keep encouraging, even enact and show us at times. He was very friendly, never rude. I had a nice time shooting with him. Soon I got offers for Aarti (1962) and Sautela Bhai (1962). I started liking acting.”

Tarachand Barjatya‘s Aarti (1962) was directed by Phani Majumdar. Alok Bharati‘s Sautela Bhai (1962) directed by Mahesh Kaul was based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay‘s “Baikunther Will” and had Pranoti Ghosh, Bipin Gupta, Guru Dutt, Raj Kumar and Kanhaiyalal playing pivotal parts. It’s a story of two step-brothers, the elder one a good-hearted rustic played by Guru Dutt and the younger, an educated weakling, spoiled by his crooked friends played by Raj Kumar. The film was honoured with the All India Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Feature Film at the 10th National Film Awards. The film is also known for Guru Dutt’s best ever performance as an actor. Sarosh played his childhood part.

Sarosh did a total of 5 films as a child actor – Masoom (1960), Aarti (1962), Sautela Bhai (1962), Man Mauji (1962) and Grahasti (1963). By the time Grahasti (1963) was released Sarosh was about 15 years old, an age when one is neither a child nor an adult and child stars hardly get acting assignments. In his short acting career Sarosh has left a mark, Masoom (1960) and Sautela Bhai (1962) are among our most loved films. Around 1967 Sarosh joined his brother-in-law Kamran as an assistant director. The first film he assisted on was Watan Se Door (1968) which had Dara Singh and Nishi in leading roles. He assisted Kamran on about six films including Chalbaaz (1969) and Aisa Bhi Hota Hai(1971).

After his stint as a child-actor he and his brother, Bunny started their own construction company, B Irani S Irani. In 1976 looking at favourable opportunities he went to Iran where he worked in the construction business. When the war broke out he was forced by the family to return and he came back to India with his wife towards the end of 1983. On his return he joined his brother Bunny (now retired) who by then was looking after the Irani Cafe, B Merwan which was started by their grandfather.

Since then he hasn’t been associated with the film Industry directly but is glad to see the next generation, his nephews and nieces, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan, Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar do well and make a mark in the entertainment industry. ( Thanks to maitrimanthan.com for information.)

The music director Anil Biswas, once upon a time in Top rung and respected as the original composer and a Mentor to many MDs, including C Ramchandra, was on the way to end his musical career. After this film, he only did one more film- by his friend Motilal- Chhoti Chhoti Baten-1965. Then he retired from the films and joined All India Radio at Delhi. Today’s song is sung by Meena Kapoor, Pankaj Mitra and chorus. The song is shot on Dulari and Radhakrishna. The video also shows Pranoti and Bipin Gupta.

Lyrics

Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho
Bade zulmi ho sanam
Bade zulmi ho o

Badi mushkil se mile ho
Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho
Bade zulmi ho sanam
Bade zulmi ho o
Badi mushkil se mile ho
Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho

Tujhe jaane hi diya pyaare
To kya baat huyi
Phir kya baat huyi
Aaj kismat se
Teri meri mulaaqat huyi
Aaj mulaaqat huyi

Ye bhi kuchh milnaa hua
Zaraa khush dil na hua

Zaraa khush dil na hua
Kaise bhala dil me jale

Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho

Khile is dil ki kali
Aisi koi baat karo
Haan koi baat karo
Zulf bikhra ke chalo
Din ko zaraa raat karo
Haan ye
Zaraa raat karo

Ho o o o o o o o
Yaad ye baat rahe
Umr bhar saath rahe
Yaad ye baat rahe
Umr bhar saath rahe
Chaahe sabhi duniya jale
Aa aa aa aa aa

Badi mushkil se mile ho
Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho
Bade zulmi ho sanam
Bade zulmi ho
Badi mushkil se mile ho
Phir bhi jaane pe tuley ho
Bade zulmi ho sanam
Bade zulmi ho

We have discussed ‘rail’ songs in our blog from time to time. Train and/or railways have always been my favorite subject and I always love to travel in trains whenever possible. I have many fond memories associated with my various journeys in narrow gauge, meter gauge and broad-gauge trains.

Other members of this blog also like to write about rail/train. Railways, there improvement, and possibility of high -speed trains to cover two long distance points in minimum time possible, is the favorite topic of many ‘Atulites’ and specially of Raja Saab.

And our leader Atul ji has also time to time discussed rail songs in his posts. It was couple of years back (or precisely in the month of May’2018) that there was some discussion about ‘railways and high-speed trains’ in the ‘Atulites WhatsApp’ group.

It started with Raja Saab expressing his wish for an overnight journey train between SBC-CSTM. He also mentioned that maybe he is a bit spoilt 😊 by high speed travels (by train) in Europe.

Well the discussion was a long one and I am not going to reproduced it all here. (Rather I will keep some points from it for another write-up in the future).

During the discussion Atul ji said that ‘as an insider (in railways)’ he can bring the various suggestions to the attention of the higher authorities or even through his posts on the blog he can throw light on many issues and can even take a series of articles connecting ‘rail/train’ issues if we can suggest him some good songs from Hindi movies.

As usually I am, being an over-enthusiastic person 😊, I search and send many songs to our editors. Atul ji had also wrote some good posts and presented some good songs. However, no song from the lot I sent was selected for a post (till now 😊).

Today I am presenting one of the songs from this lot.

So far, on the blog we have ninety-eight songs under ‘Rail songs’ and many of them are timeless classics like ‘zindagi ke safar mein guzar jaate hain jo makaam’ composed by R.D. Burman, ‘Gaadi bulaa rahi hai’ by Laxmikant-Pyarelal etc etc.

I think R.D. Burman composed many songs in this ‘genre’ and it would be interesting to know how many other lyricists and composers are involved in creating rail songs and who are the toppers.

But then, it again is the subject matter of another post (may be the next post in this ‘genre’ could be presented with these statistics with a rail song).

One of the other Pancham composed rail song that immediately comes to mind is ‘ham dono do premi duniya chhod chale’ from ‘Ajnabi-1974’ which was picturized with Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman on a ‘freight train’ jumping on ‘haystacks’. (Atul ji’s terminology) and I am specially mentioning this song now because
if we watch today’s song it immediately reminds us of the above song.

However, today’s song is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

And today 27th November 2020 is his sixty-eighth birth anniversary.

On this occasion wishing Bappi Lahiri a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead let us enjoy the today’s song picturized on Mithun Chakravarty and Ranjeeta, also seen is Shakti Kapoor in the picturization of this song.
(This song is also picturized on a ‘freight-train’ 😊)

‘Tarkeeb-1982’ was directed by Ravikant Nagaich for ‘Venus Combines, Madras’. Ravikant Nagaich also did the photography of this movie. It was produced by S. Krishnamurthy.

Story of this movie was written by Taarakaraamaa and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant.
Editing of this movie was done by N.M. Shankar. It had Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakravarty, Shakti Kapoor, Rakesh Pande, Sharat Saxena, Paintal, Mukri, Beena, Parveen Pal, Naaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Leena Das, Dinesh Sharma, Kalpana Ayyer, Prem Bedi, Guddi, Madan Puri and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.11.1982.

This movie had six songs written by Anjaan and its music was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, S. Janaki, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, S.P. Balasubramaniam and Bappi Lahiri have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie ‘Tarkeeb-1982’ makes its debut on the blog and so does Bappi Da makes a debut in the category of ‘rail songs’ (if I am not wrong 😊) on the blog.

Let us now enjoy today’s song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Their voices are lip synced by Mithun Chakraborty and Ranjeeta respectively.

Dil ne bhi bhar di haami
Phir kyun rahen door door
Kuchh boley ye tanhaayi
Dil thham thham le angdaayi
Donon nashe mein hain choor

Barson ke pyaase mil jaayen aise
Jaise zameen aasmaan
Haan
Ye chalti gaadi ee
Gaadi mein ham tum
Dono akele yahaan aa
Arey chhuk chhuk gaadi
Jab jab boley
dhak dhak doley
Dil mera aa

aapas mein lad marte ho
har chhoti si baat pe tum
aapas mein lad marte ho
phailaa itnaa zehar ki tum

bachchon ki maasoom nazar
ye reet badal kar dam legi ee
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

soch liyaa hai

nayaa zamaana kaisaa ho o
soch liyaa hai
ham bachchon ne
nayaa zamaana kaisaa ho o
maata jaisa dil ho jiska
pyaar pitaa ke jaisaa ho o
maata jaisa dil ho jiska
pyaar pitaa ke jaisaa ho
sukh mein jo lori gaaye ae
rote bachchon ko behlaaye ae
sukh mein jo lori gaaye ae
rote bachchon ko behlaaye ae
mel mohabbat mehnat mein
jo jeenaa marnaa sikhlaaye ae
duniya duniya tab hogi
jab hans ke har dukh jhelegi
badlegi duniya
ik din badlegi
badlegi
badlegi ye duniya aa

Today, November 26, 2020 is the 31st Remembrance Day of Chand Usmani (03/01/1933 – 26/11/1989). She excelled in the roles of a suffering woman – as a wife, a sister and later as a mother. Though she was a fan of Hindi films in her teens, she did not think about an acting career in Hindi films. Her first preference was to complete her higher education in keeping with her family tradition. But her fate was written to be an actress.

Chand Usmani (Full name: Chandbibi Khanam Usmani) was born in a well-educated Pathan family in Agra. After completion of her Matriculation examination in 1949, she came to Mumbai on holiday and was staying with her relatives. During her stay in Mumbai, she saw an advertisement of the Kardar-Kolynos-Teresa Talent Contest which she participated just for a fun. She was surprised when she was selected for the participation in the contest. She was more surprised when, in the final round, she was selected as a runner-up in the contest. Producer-director A R Kardar was one of the sponsors and judges for the contest.

Even though Chand Usmani was a runner-up in the contest, A R Kardar was impressed by her presentations in the contest. He offered her the lead role in ‘Jeewan Jyoti (1953) produced by him and directed by Mahesh Kaul. Her lead actor was Shammi Kapoor for whom it was his debut film as well. The film was a box office failure but Chand Usmani’s role of a suffering wife was appreciated by the critiques.

I had watched Chand Usmani’s debut film ‘Jeewan Jyoti’ (1953) a few years back. Her performance in the role of a suffering wife of Shammi Kapoor was so natural that it did not occur to me at that time that this was her first film. With this film, Chand Usmani got type-casted for the role of a suffering wife and a suffering sister in almost all of her subsequent films of 1950s. She was a discarded wife in otherwise light comedy film, ‘Baraati’ (1954), a suffering beloved of Bharat Bhushan and a sister of villain Pran in ‘Amaanat’ (1955), an innocent flower girl in ‘Baap Re Baap’ (1955), a blind girl in ‘Rangeen Raaten’ (1956), Dilip Kumar’s sister in ‘Naya Daur’ (1957) and Rajendra Kumar’s sister in ‘Do Behanen’ (1959).

Some of the melodious songs pictuirsed on Chand Usmani in her films of 1950s in which she had lead/second lead roles are as under:

Film Song Singer
Jeewan Jyoti (1953) tasweeren banti hai kiranon se chhanti hain Asha Bhosle-Shammi Kapoor
Baaraati (1954) aa phir se mere pyaar ki kismat sanwaar de Lata Mangeshkar
Amaanat (1955) meri wafaayen tumhaari jafaayen Asha Bhosle
Baap Re Baap (1955) raat rangeeli chamke taare aaja sajanwaa Asha Bhosle
Rangeen Raaten (1956) ham jaage jag soye ri aali Lata Mangeshkar
Do Bahenen (1959) jhuk jhuk jhola khaaye re badariya Lata Mangeshkar -Mahendra Kapoor

Chand Usmani’s early films in which she got lead roles did not fare well at the box office except ‘Baap Re Baap’ (1955). She had to switch over to supporting roles by the end of the 1950s and thereafter. Some of her films in the 1960s with supporting roles were ‘April Fool ‘(1964), ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), ‘Kohra’ (1964), ‘Anita’ (1967), ‘Khilona’ (1970), ‘Pehchaan’ (1970), ‘Khel Khel Mein’ (1975), ‘Kaadambari’ (1976), ‘Yaaraana’ (1981) etc. She got the Filmfare Award for the best supporting actor for her role in ‘Pehchaan’ (1970). From mid-70s through 80s, she did elderly roles.

Chand Usmani had a long and active filmy career till her last, spanning over 3 decades during which she worked in around 125 films. Her last released film was ‘Lohe Ke Haath’ (1990) though a couple of her delayed films were released later than 1990.

In an old interview of her in the TV programme, ‘Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan’, Tabassum had ‘chided’ Chand Usmani that she did not do any ‘acting’ in most of her films because she was in reality depicting her own personality. This may be the reason that in most of her films, Chand Usmani’s performances looked natural and convincing. Even in the midst of acting as a suffering woman, she portrays the role of a warm-hearted person with her innocent smiles. In the same interview, Chand Usmani said that she had two regrets which remained with her throughout in her life. First, she did not complete her higher education and second, she did not get chance to do variety of roles in the films.

Chand Usmani was acquainted with Mukul Dutt, when she was working in Bimal Roy’s ‘Prem Patra’ (1962) for which he was Assistant Director to Bimal Roy. Subsequently, they got married. Mukul Dutt directed box office hit films like ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ (1970), ‘Raaste Ka Pathhar’ (1972), ‘Chhalia’ (1973), etc. However, he could not carry the success as director in his subsequent films. He also intermittently worked as lyricists in many Bangla films during 1965-2002.

Chand Usmani died of cancer on November 26, 1989 at the age of 56 leaving behind her son and the husband.

On the occasion of 33rd Remembrance Day of Chand Usmani, I am presenting a song, ‘matwaali muraliya baaji re aadhi raat’ which is picturised on her in the film ‘Zindagi Aur Hum’ (1962). The song is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar on the words of Pandit Shivkumar which is set to music by Roshan.

I like the picturization of the song which gives me a feel of a real rural atmosphere. Just observe how natural Chand Usmani looks while throwing grains to pigeons.

In the beginning of the song under discussion, actors who appears on the screen are Naina, Dinesh and thereafter Nalini Jaywant. When prelude music is played, the song heard in the background is the theme song of the film which is intermittently heard in the background in low sound. The tune of the song under discussion is melodic and both the prelude as well as the interlude music are in keeping with the devotional mood of the song.

With this song, all the six songs (including a two-part song) of ‘Zindagi Aur Hum’ (1962) have been covered in the Blog.

Today’s song is from the film Kurukshetra-45. This was a film made by Unity Productions, Calcutta. The film was directed by Rameshwar Sharma. This is an unknown name. I could only find that he had directed only 3 films…Bhakta Kabir-1942, Kurukshetra-45 and Vaasana-52. All these films were made by Unity productions, so maybe he was from Calcutta. The Lyricist was Jameel Mazhari – another new name. He seems to have written songs for only this film. The Music Director was Pandit Ganapat Rao.

I tried hery hard to get some information about this MD, but to no avail. However, what I know about him is….Pt.Ganapatrao Gurav, the Music director of this movie was basically a Classical singer and was the first batch disciple of Ustad Karim Khan, the founder of Kirana Gharana. He was a Court Musician in the state of Jamkhandi, Karnataka. He hailed from Ratnagiri dist.of Maharashtra and was a respected figure in classical circles.
However, like some other classical singers of his time,he too ventured in Film music and gave music to Kurukshetra and Bebus(1950) featuring Bharat Bhushan and Poornima.

He returned to classical singing and today his Grandson Pt .Kaibalyanath is an accomplished singer awarded A grade by AIR and Doordarshan,in addition to many awards. There is an annual Pt.Ganapatrao memorial festival conducted by India Habitat Centre also.

The cast of the film was K L Saigal, Nawab kashmiri, Shyamlo, Udwadiya, Radharani, Agha Mehmood kashmiri, Tara, Kamal kant etc.etc. There were 14 songs in the film. Four songs-all sung by Saigal are already on the Blog. Today’s song will be the fifth song here.

The Film indicates 2 names, which are cases of ” Same Name Confusion”. Radha Rani and Kalyani – singer of today’s song. There were 2 singer actresses by the name of Radha Rani. One was from Bombay and the other was from Calcutta. Today’s Radha Rani is Calcuttewali.

This Radha Rani was born in 1903 at Jiaganj, Murshidabad in West Bengal. She was from a rich Marwadi family settled in Bengal for many generations. Her Bangla was very good. After the demise of her father, her mother established a Gopal ji Mandir at her residence.

Listening to kirtans from in house offerings and also from visitors, she developed a liking for devotional songs. She was trained by Keertania Harimakhan Das and then Manju Ustad. She was trained in Thumris and Ghazals by Ustad Dabeer Khan. She stayed in Behrampur to learn music.

She started giving performances. In one such performance, the Zamindar of Jiaganj, Surendranath Singh heard her. Impressed with her, he brought her to Calcutta and she was exposed to theatre ,Radio and films. Her first silent film was Sreekant-30. Then she acted in several silent films like in which she worked with Debki Bose, Sabita devi, Dhiren Ganguly etc etc. She cut several private records for Hindustan Records company. She sang pala Keertan songs which became very popular.

New Theatres took her in ‘ Yahudi ki Ladki ‘-33. Subsequently she also acted in film ‘ Kashinath-43’ from New Theatres. She acted in only films made in Calcutta and by Calcutta companies. She did many Bangla films.

Radha Rani also gave playback in 4 Hindi films,namely- Mukti-37, Nartaki-40, Aandhi-40 and Irada-44. She worked in Hindi films till only 1947. How long she worked in Bangla films, I do not know. This Radha Rani expired on 22-8-1997 at Calcutta, at the ripe age of 94 years.

Filmography in Hindi- Silent films like Srikant-30, Flames of Flesh-30, Panchsaar-30, After the Death-31, Money makes what not-31 etc Talkie Films- Yahudi ki ladki-33, Daku ka Ladka-35, Daksha Yagnya-35, Kadkati Bijli-36, Khudai Khidamatgar-37, karmaveer-38, Kashinath-43, Shri Ramanuj-43, Kurukshetra-45, Baap-46 and Aisa Kyun-47.

The other Same Name Confusion name is that of singer Kalyani. There were 2 singer actresses with the same name Kalyani. One was mainly active in Bombay films and the other was active in Calcutta films. Since this is the first time, I give notes on both the artistes.

Kalyani Bai (1920-2009) (real name – Zarina) was an actor-singer who was trained in classical singing. She sang khayal, thumri and ghazals for All India Radio and recorded such genre of songs for HMV. This led her to a filmy career in Calcutta in 1934 as an actor-singer. After some struggle, she was employed with New Theatres and she acted in films like ‘Anaath Ashram’ (1937), ‘Mukti’ (1937), and ‘President’ (1937) in which she also sang some songs for herself.

In 1937, Kalyani Bai left New Theatres and joined Ranjit Movietone in Bombay (Mumbai). Her first film with Ranjit Movietone was ‘Toofaani Toli’ (1937). In the 40s, she appeared to have become a free-lancer, although I find that she worked in more films directed by VM Vyas of Sunrise Films than other banners. She was one of the singers in the famous All-Women qawwali in the film Zeenat-1945. Her last film as an actor-singer was ‘Ghar’ (1945). However, she lent her voice for other actresses in films released during 1947-54. She also acted in small roles in a few films of the 1970s and probably early 80s. She later married Seth Chirauddin Bakar. She had 2 sons and a daughter from him. She retired and settled in Bombay. She died on 1-10-2009.

Kalyani Das was a playback singer who started her career in Hindi films from Calcutta with PC Barua’s ‘Jawaab’ (1942) and ended her playback singing career in Hindi films with ‘Iran Ki Ek Raat’ (1949). She also sang for a few films made in Bombay. To the best of my knowledge, she did not act in any films.

It is not so difficult to segregate ‘Kalyanis’ as both of them worked in Calcutta at different times. Kalyani Bai worked in films produced in Calcutta up to 1937 whereas Kalyani Das commenced her playback singing career from Calcutta from 1942 onward. She mostly worked for music director Kamal Dasgupta (8 out of 11 Hindi films in which she was playback singer). She sang 37 songs in 11 films….Jawab-42, meghdoot-45, Kurukshetra-45, Zameen Aasmaan-46, Prem ki Duniya-46, Bindiya-46, Manmaani-47, Giribala-47, Faisla-47, Swayamsidha-49 and Iran ki ek raat-49.

Films made with the name ” Kurukshetra ” were many, made in different languages. As per the CITWF (complete index to world films) data, such films were made in 1933, 1945, 1977, 1983, 1987, 1988, 2000 and 2008. The oldest Kurukshetra was produced by Chhatrapati Cine Co. Kolhapur , Directed by Sardar Balasaheb Yadav, Music by Bhurji khan Saheb and the cast included Balasaheb Yadav, Madhavrao, Joshi, Nandrekar, Hansa, Padma etc. It was a Mythological movie

Film Kurukshetra-45 was released on 17-5-1946 in New West End theatre, Bombay, where it ran only for 4 weeks. According to the review in magazine ‘ Film India’ of July 1946, the film was not liked by the audience. As usual the editor criticised the director and the story/dialogue writer-Kamalkant Varma. This Sharma-Varma pair spoiled the film, as per the review. It was, however, all praise for Saigal and the Music Director. Personally, I was not much impressed with any song of this film, but still, I find today’s song much better in tune, music and the rendition by Kalyani Das.
