Blog Day :

5729 Post No. : 18250

Today (25 March 2024) is the festival of Holi, the festival of colour.

The word Holi is derived from demoness Holika.

The tale of Holika and her relatives is quite interesting. According to legends, she was an Asuri who was the daughter of Kashyap and Diti. Rahu and Ketu were her sons.

Hiranyakashyap and Hiranyaksh were the brothers of Holika.

Asur king Hiranyakashyap, thanks to boons received from Lord Brahma, had become extremely powerful and almost immortal. He conquered all the worlds and assumed the title of Indra and made everyone treat him as God. But his son Prahlada, an ardent Lord Vishnu devotee refused to treat his father as a God.

Hiranyakashyap was an enemy of Lord Vishnu because Lord Vishnu had killed his brother Hiranyaksh by assuming Varah Avtar.

Angered by Prahlad’s intransigence, Hiranyakashyap planned to kill Prahlad with the help of his sister Holika. Demoness Holika had a shawl gifted by Lord Brahma that protected her from fire. Holika lured Prahlad to sit on her lap in a huge bonfire. As the fire was lit, Prahlad prayed to lord Vishnu to keep him safe. Lord Vishnu summoned a gust of wind that blew the shawl off Holika and covered Prahlad. So Prahlad was protected from fire and Holika was burnt to death.

It is believed that doing Holika puja on the eve of Holi festival brings prosperity and wealth. It is believed that Holika was created to ward off fears of all kinds, therefore she is worshipped along with Prahlad on the eve of Holi and this event is called Holika dahan. The Holika dahan takes place on the last day of Phalgun, which is a full moon day (Poornima). Holi is celbrated on the next day which is the first day of the month of Chaitra.

Lord Vishnu subsequently killed Hiranyakashyap by assuming Narsimha avatar, carefully finding loopholes in the conditions of indestructibility that Hiranyakashyap was blessed with by Lord Brahma. So Lord Vishnu had to take two avatars to kill two mighty asur brothers.

In subsequent Yug, Holi festival was also celebrated by Lord Krishna (later yug avatar of Lord Vishnu) with Gopis.

We in this blog have covered lots and lots of Holi related songs on the occasions of the festival of Holi from 2009 till 2023. 72 Holi festivals songs have been covered in the blog so far.

On the occasion of the festival of holi today (25 March 2024), here is a Holi song from “Raj Pratigya”(1958).

“Raj Pratigya”(1958) was produced by Gauri Shankar Goyal and directed by Jaswant Zaveri for Dinesh Films, Bombay. The movie had Nirupa Roy, Jairaj, Arun Ahuja, BM Vyas, Arvind Pandya, Sunder, Ramesh Sinha, Sabita Chatterjee, Sadiq Ali, Praveen Pal, Dar Kashmirietc in it.

“Raj Pratigya”(1958) had eight songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog so far.

Here is the third song from the movie to appear in the blog. This Holi song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and female chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyay.

Only audio of the song is available. My guess is that it was picturised on Nirupa Roy and others playing her sahelis. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy, colourful and safe Holi.

5676 Post No. : 18187

Today’s song is a duet from the film Shrikrishna Bhakti-1955.

This was a Mythological film (पौराणिक ), directed by the “Trick Magician” – Babubhai Mistri. The music director was the Melody Maker – Chitragupta. The cast of the film was Manmohan Krishna, Lalita Pawar, Mahipal, Bipin Gupta, B.M.Vyas, Dalpat and many others. A special feature of this film was that there were as many as 7 “Guest Appearance ” artistes – clearly a record number for any film till then. I doubt very much if any other film has broken this record. Any reader, who knows about more than 7 Guest artistes in a film, mentioned in the HFGK, so far, may please give the information in the Comments column. The Guest artistes in this film were….Krishna Kumari, Anwar Hussain, Maruti, Shaikh, Indira bansal, Bagala and Chitalkar (surprised with this name !).

I have always liked the Mythological films. This liking had developed because I had been seeing such films from my childhood, first as an escort to the Elders’ group in the family and later, by choice. Today’s song is from a film which depicts the story of a Krishn Bhakt. It is about how the devotee is saved from imminent death. The story of the film is….

In a village lives a boastful Bramhin Balbhadra Shastri and Cheta-the Krishn Bhakta Harijan. One day Cheta invites several Sadhus for food, whom Balbhadra had insulted. At the time of meals, the Sadhus get more than enough food. At the same time, food from Balbhadra’s house disappears. This enrages Balbhadra Shastri. On Janmashtami day, Shanti- Balbhadra’s daughter serves Prasad to Seva, son of Cheta. Balbhadra is very angry and hits Seva. He becomes unconscious. Same time the Idol in the temple disappears miraculously. People are afraid and request Cheta to invoke God to come back. Cheta sings a Bhajan and Seva comes alive and at the same time the Temple idol returns. All the people start hailing Cheta.

Balbhadra is very angry and decides to kill Cheta, but in the melee, instead of Cheta, Balbhadra kills his own daughter Shanta. Balbhadra accuses Cheta of her murder and takes him to court. Cheta is sentenced to death. On the day of execution, when Cheta is singing a bhajan while on way to the Gallows, suddenly, Shanta comes running and explains that the killed girl was someone else and she was kidnapped. Cheta is freed. Balbhadra repents and Cheta is honoured as a Great Krishn Bhakt.

Do you remember which story you liked the most in your childhood ? When we were in school, we read a lot of stories. Stories from Mythology, History, Magic, Mystery, Birbal, Tenaliram, Tarzan etc etc. We liked some stories, and did not like others. To me, barring Aladdin, Alibaba and Sindbad, all stories of Arabian Nights were the same. Stories from Vedas were hard to remember due to difficult names like Jamadagni, Jaratkaru or Yadnyawalkya etc. My favourite story was that of Aladdin, which I would read repeatedly at frequent intervals.

I think, Hindi Cinema producers too have their favourites in stories, on which they make films. A cursory browsing of the list of films from 1931 to 1987, gave me the information that Aladdin ( 5 films), Alibaba ( 6 ), Bhakta Prahlad ( 6 ), and Laila Majnu ( 5 ) were few stories on which several producers made films at different times. However, the Top story amongst all the films is that of Raja Harishchandra. A total of 11 films were made on this story till 1987. A point to be noted is that even Dadasaheb Phalke selected this story to make India’s First silent feature film in 1913.

Silent films were made on Raja Harishchandra in 1913, 1917, 1924,1928 and 1929. Talkie films were made on Harishchandra in 1931 and 1958, as Raja harishchandra in 1952 and 1979 and as Harishchandra and Taramati in 1963 and 1970. Clearly, this could be a record that 11 films are made on ONE story.

Indian public never gets tired of the routine. Films on Love Triangle are being made since 1931 till today though by repackaging them differently in keeping with the changing times. Though the final outcome is predictable and very well known to the viewers, these films still celebrate jubilees in the Theatres !

Similarly, all Mythological films are based on the principle of ” Satyamev jayate” or “Victory of good over the Evil”, each film presents it in different ‘dressing’ and different routes. The fights of the Gods and the Rakshasas are very interesting, because of lot of firework(literally and figuratively), Trick scenes and unimaginable get-ups of the Rakshasas ( like only one eye on the forehead, or half animal body or simply an ugly looking Giant etc ). In olden days, I remember that there used to be loud rants of “Jai Shri Ram ” or ” Har Har Mahadev” within the theatre at the end of the movie- depending on who the main God of the film was.

The decade of the 50s was indeed a decade of Religious films. From 1951 to 1960, there were about 120 such films, averaging 1 religious film every month for 10 years. Those were the times when even Big stars did not hesitate to act in Mythologicals. Ashok Kumar, Prithviraj Kapoor, Meena Kumari,Durga Khote, Leela Chitnis, Nalini Jaywant , Shanta Apte etc used to act in religious films without any complex. It was much much later that a few artistes were branded as “Mythological actors’,like Mahipal, Manhar Desai, Shauh Modak, Trilok Kapoor, Nirupa Roy, Prem Adib, Shobhana Samarth etc. etc. One interesting thing was 2 major actors, who were in Mythological films, namely Shahu Modak and Manohar Desai, were not Hindus. They were Jew and Christian respectively, doing roles of Hindu Gods !

There was a fixed and permanent audience for these films. Prakash pictures was famous for making many religious films. But other studios like Prabhat, New Theatres, Ranjit, Sagar, Basant pictures or Wadia movietone, Bombay talkies, Filmistan etc too made mythological films. Besides the eye-catching scenes, another attraction of these films used to be its music. Very melodious and memorable Bhajans were composed for these films by S N Tripathi, Bulo C Rani, Avinash Vyas, Shankarrao Vyas, Hemant Kumar, Vasant Desai etc. Some of the famous Bhajans were sung by Rafi,Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt and others. Bhajan is one genre of the HFM which is generally overlooked, neglected or snubbed.

Many people get confused with the words, Culture and Religion. Culture and Religion have a close relationship. The commonest points of Religion, followed by a majority for time immemorial, becomes the culture of the nation. Raas Garba, Ganesh Utsav, Diwali celebrations and Indian Calendar New Year days in respective regions are no more a matter of Religion by now. They have become the cultural heritage of the country. A good example is Holi or lighting done on Deepavali or touching the feet of the elders…all these constitute Culture, though its roots are traceable to religion.

Today, Religion, for most people in the world,I feel,is limited to one’s personal space and I believe, in today’s setup it is also very appropriate to limit the religion to one’s home. One should not get confused between Religion and Bhakti. Mythological films are based essentially on stories from the Holy books, like Ramayana, Mahabharat or the Puranas. Bhakti Pradhan films are based on personalities engaged in devotion to their Deity. Thus, films like Narsi Bhagat or Sant Tukaram are Bhakti Pradhan films, whereas, films like Pawanputra Hanuman or Veer Arjun are Mythological or Pauranik films. Films on saints like Kabir, Soordas, Tulsidas or Tyagaraja are not religious but Mythological films are surely religious films.

However Bhakti is a way to remember,to submit to,appease or dedicate oneself to his God or Deity. Holy books classify different forms of Bhakti-the way it is or can be followed. There are 9 forms of Bhakti,as described in Vishnu Puran and Bhagwadgeeta…

SN Form of Bhakti Example
1. Shravan…श्रवण…(Hearing) like Raja Parikshit
2. Keertan…कीर्तन…(Discourse) Like Thyagaraja
3. Smaran…स्मरण…( Remembering) Like Bhakta Prahlad
4. Paad sevan…पाद सेवन…( Remaining at Feet) ..Like Lakshmi
5. Archan…अर्चना…( Worship)…Pooja
6. Vandana…वंदना…(Obeisance)…Sashtang Namaskar or Prostation
7. Dasya…दास्य…( Service)… Like Hanuman
8. Sakhya…सख्य…( Friendship)… Like Arjuna
9. Atmanivedan…आत्मनिवेदन…(Self Dedication) Like Meerabai

Writing on religion is my favourite, but I stop here as it may increase the length of the post and also not every reader likes to read about this subject. Manmohan krishna was the lead actor in this film. However he was not a regular actor for Mythological or Religious films. The fact that he was an actor who could do any type of role in any movie must have gone in his favour. Actors like Manmohan Krishna are rare.

MANMOHAN KRISHNA was born on 11-8-1908, at Lahore in Punjab. He was a very studious person and always stood first in school. He completed his M.Sc. in Physics and started working as a Physics lecturer in a Lahore college. He was very fond of singing and also sang on Lahore Radio. Once when V. Shantaram visited Lahore, he heard Manmohan’s singing on stage and was impressed. Shantaram offered him the lead role in his forthcoming film, “Matwala Shair Ramjoshi”-1947, In this film Manmohan sang 6 solos and 3 duets with Zohrabai Ambalewali. However, his first song as a playback singer was in Shantaram’s film, ” Jeewan Yatra”-1946, under Vasant Desai’s baton.

In his career of more than 40 years, he acted in 183 films and directed 1 film – Noorie-1979. He also sang 24 songs in 8 films, namely Jeewan Yatra-46, Matwala Shayar Ramjoshi-47, Andhon ki duniya-47, Apna Desh-49, Afsar-50, Aaram-51, Railway Platform-55 and Shehar aur Sapna-1963. During his stay in Bombay, he anchored a Radio show ” Cadbury’s Phulwari” in the 50’s.

Manmohan Krishna was connected with Indian Peoples Theatre i.e. IPTA and acted in few of their dramas. Being an educated person, he was impressed with Nehruvian Secularism. He worked in films like Shehar aur Sapna by K. A.Abbas as well as the first Indo-Soviet film Pardesi-1957. He also got the Film Fare award for playing the role of Abdul Chacha in the film Dhool ka Phool-64. A song in this film ” Tu Hindu banega na Musalman banega ” shot on him, became very popular.

Being a member of the intelligentia, he could not sell himself nor gel into the Hindi filmi world fully. He always fought against injustice. He established ‘ Yuvak Biradari ‘ for young Indians, which became a big organisation in due course.

He was a favourite of the Chopra Brothers and acted in most films made by them. Some of his famous films were Deewar, Trishul, Humraaz, Insaaf ka Tarazu, Joshila, Kanoon, Kala Pathar, Dhool ka phool, Waqt, Naya Daur etc. etc. He also worked in 12 Punjabi films. He was prominently spotted in any role due to his thick bushy eyebrows.

In Hindi films, he rarely got a hero’s role, barring few films, because of his ordinary look. He had no looks required for a Hero’s role in a commercial film, in those days. He was of course an excellent Character Artiste. Due to his nature, he kept away from Filmi parties and groupism. He had no real friends in the film industry. Manmohan krishna did not keep good health in his last few years and died at the age of 82 years, in Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Bombay, on 3-11-1990.
( Based on some information from wiki, ‘Beete kal ke sitare’ by Shriram Tamrakar, muVyz, HFGK and my notes. Thanks to all.)

Today’s song is a duet by Mohd. Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur with Chorus. Enjoy….

5346 Post No. : 17529

Today (8 march 2023) is Holi, the festival of colour. The mythology and history behind the festival are well known and need not be repeated.

Still there were some facts about Holi that I was not aware of. For example, I was not aware that Holi festival falls on Poornima (full moon day), which is the last day of the month of falgun (also called Phagun). This is in fact the last day of the Vikram Samwat Calender. The next day, viz firstd day of The month of Chaitra starts is the first day of the new year of Vikram Samwat.

This full moon day, third full moon of the year, is called worm moon in Western Astronomy circles.

That way, this festival of Holi is the reverse of Deepawali that falls on Amawasya, on the middle of the month of Kartik. In A way, Holi marks the beginning of summer whereas Deepawali marks the beginning of winter.

It is interesting how moon plays such important roles in determining the dates of India festivals.

Since Holi marks the beginning of Summer, so it means that days (that were still shorter than night) begin to get longer. Finally it is on 21 March 2023 that day and night become equal. It is called equinox.

Heavens this year have arranged for two interesting event on the occasion of Holi.:) Just before Holi, the world witnessed the sight of Jupiter and Venus coming close to each other in the evening sky. This was the most important astronomical event of the year.

on 24 march 2023, there will be venus eclipse, viz Moon will cover Venus just like it sometimes covers Sun to cause solar eclipse. It needs full moon to cause solar eclipse, but this venus eclipse will be caused by a thin dooj ka chaand. 🙂 This event is technically called Lunar occultation of Venus.

This festival is being celebrated for thousands of years, it predates even Vikram Samwat, which is 2080 years old. I wonder what calender was used to determine the date of Holi festival (and other festivals) before the Vikram Samwat.

On this occasion, here is a Holi song from “Hamaara Ghar”(1950).

“Hamaara Ghar”(1950) was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt for Hindustan Chitra, Bombay. The movie had Durga Khote, Umakant Desai, Veera, Agha, Meena Kumari, Geeta Bose, David, Jankidas, Ramesh Gupta etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. Six songs from the movie have been discussed in the blog in the past. Here are the details:-

Blog post number song Date of post Singer(s) lyricist
9270 Kahaan chale sarkaar (Hamaara Ghar) 9 January 2014 Shamshad Begam, Kishore Kumar Rammurty Chaturvedi

16436 Dekho to dil hi dil mein jalte hain jalne waale (Hamaara Ghar) 24 June 2021 Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begam, Shanti Sharma Anjum Jaipuri

Here is this joyous Holi song from “Hamaara Ghar”(1950). This song is sung by Shamshad Begam, Rafi and chorus. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

With this song, the seventh and final song from the movie, all songs of “Hamaara Ghar”(1950) have been covered in the blog. This movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe holi.

5077 Post No. : 16999

Today’s song is from the film Gaali-1944.

When I saw the title of this film, I was stunned. I could not ever imagine that such a movie title could be given. I was wondering as to what must be there in the movie- a Gaali competition between 2 groups or is it about a person who can not speak a single sentence without including a gaali in it ? I could not fathom a reason for titling a film like this. Later in the early 50’s, I got a chance to see this film and I was totally and completely disappointed. Even after seeing the film I did not get answers to my original question. The story of the film was meaningless indeed.

After about 25 to 30 years, I was shocked to see the trend of titling the films with sophisticated gaalis like Besharam, Bundalbaz, Beimaan, Bewafa, Bewaqoof etc etc. Such changes are not new to the film industry.

The film Gaali was produced by Chiman bhai Desai under the banner of N.R.Desai Productions, Bombay, and the film was directed by R.S.Chaudhari – a veteran spill over from Silent film era. The name of R S Chaudhari may not be known to the newer generation, but he was considered ” Guru” by stalwarts like Mehboob Khan and Kardar. Like many oldies, Chaudhari was also a multifaceted person and used to write stories for films. You will be surprised to know about his contribution in writing stories of successful films like Roti, Rattan, Baiju Bawra etc.

R S aka Rama Shankar Chaudhari was a great name in the silent era and early Talkie period. Veterans like Mehboob and Kardar treated him like their teacher.

He was born on 8-6-1903 in Banares-U.P. in a middle class family which gave importance to education. After his graduation , he came to Bombay and did another graduation in Arts from J.J. school of Arts, in 1922. He then entered the film line as Art Director and Designer of publicity Pamphlets. he did remarkable covers for the Gujarati Film Journal ” Mauj majah”. He assisted director Manilal Joshi at Laxmi Film co. He started directing silent films with his first film at Laxmi – “Neera “-1926. It was the famous actor Raja Sandow’s spectacular costume film. The film became a Hit wherever it was shown.

He directed 15 silent films at Imperial film co. and Sagar Films. He made several Classics in Historical genres like Anarkali-1928, starring Sulochana (Ruby Meyers). This popular Hit silent film was remade as Talkie in 1935 again with the same cast and chaudhari as a director. Sulochana also acted in Anarkali-1953, thus creating a record of the same actress acting in 3 films of same title and story.

His other historical films were Shirin Khushru and Shaan e Hind, often using the legendary epics as a Nationalist allegory. His films usually featured Sulochana and Zubeida, the two popular and costly Heroines of that era.

His first talkie film was Madhuri-1932, featuring Sulochana. In all, he directed 14 Talkie films – madhuri-32, Sulochana-33, Piya Pyare-34, Aaj kal-34, Anarkali-35, Shaan e Hind-36, Hamari betiyan-36, kal ki Baat-37, Rifle Girl-38, Such hai-39, Aankh Micholi-42, Gaali-44, Magadh Raj-46 and Jaaliyanwala Bagh ki jyoti-53.

he was a very good story and screenplay writer.many of his film had his stories. he wrote stories for films like Neera-26 and Khud ki shaan-31 in silent film era and for Talkie films Hamari betiyan-36, Such hai-39, Roti-42, Adab Arz-43, Gaali-44, Laal haveli-44, Rattan-44, Aan-52, Baiju Bawra-52, Insan aur shaitan-70 and international crook-74. he also scripted Kardar’s pehle aap-44 and mehboob’s Son of india-62 and many films of Ravindra Dave.

In the last phase of life, Chaudhari lived a lonely life in penury. He travelled only by bus. He breathed his last on 22-8-1972 in Bombay.

for 12 songs of the film there were 5 lyricists and 2 Music directors- Pt. Hanuman Prasad and Sajjad Hussain. Sajjad was actually his assistant, but he composed 2 songs and was given equal status as joint MD. The cast of the film was Karan Dewan, Nirmala, Manju, Yakub, Kanhaiyalal, Sunalini Devi, Zillo bai, Gulab and many others. Today’s song is sung by Manju. She was one of those unfortunate actresses/singers, whose careers were curtailed by workless contracts with the studios and then due to marriages.

Manju’s father Gangaram Jadhav was a famous Marathi drama actor in his times in ‘Anand Vilas natak mandali’ at nagpur. He had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters- Vijaylaxmi, Manjula, Trimbak and Balakram. They never went to school but were taught at home only. When Gangaram got a job in prabhat film co. they shifted to poona. Manjula started learning classical music from keshavrao bhole of Prabhat.

When Manjula got a singing role in film Aadmi-1939 as a child artiste, her name was changed to Manju. She sang songs in both versions-Hindi and Marathi. Next she acted in the film Sant Gyaneshwar-40. She acted and sang in Nai kahani-43. She sang songs in films Chaand and Ramshastri-44.

Due to a legal contract with Prabhat, she was not able to work in other films though she was in good demand outside, but Prabhat refused to allow her. However, producer Chimanbhai Desai got permission and she worked and sang in the film Gaali-44 She got an acting and singing role in the film Rattan-44. The film and the songs became hits. offers started pouring in but meanwhile she got married to karan Dewan. Her in-laws did not allow her to act in films. She had to bid goodbye to films.

After Karan Dewan’s death her connection with films ended finally. She has 2 sons and 5 daughters. She stayed with her sons in Bombay and Sharjah. (Thanks to blog beetehuedin for information.)

The film GAALI-1944 was available till at least 1950,around which time I must have seen it. The film story was….

Gaali was a film with a strange story of a young blind widow, who thinks that her husband comes and talks to her.
Mangala (Nirmala) loses her husband soon after marriage and she also becomes blind, without any medical reason. She stays with her Father in law Jagat narayan Chakravarti who also has an unmarried daughter lali (Manju Dewan). One day he meets Tilak, son of a zamindar from a nearby village. He wants Tilak(Karan Dewan) to marry his daughter Lali, but surprisingly,Tilak starts getting attracted to Mangala. She also talks to him and imagines it as if her husband is talking to her.
This is made use of by a village ruffian and people attack Jagat’s house demanding that the friendship of Tilak and Mangla be stopped. In the melee, jagat gets killed. At the same time Mangala and Tilak are in a Temple getting intimate. Suddenly her eyesight comes back and she realises the truth that it is not her husband.

Finally,Tilak marries Lali and Mangala becomes a Sadhwi in a temple for the rest of her life.

I do not remember the songs of this film, but most songs were shot on Lali(Manju).

This was ,according to me, a hopeless film.

Blog Day :

4991 Post No. : 16886

One can easily get philosophical too, besides the celebratory aspect. So okay, one more year, one more Holi celebration, one more set of songs posted. . .  And the wheel of life continues to roll. . .

Into the fourteenth year of continuous daily publication, since July 2008. And we have gone past on the way, fourteen Holi celebrations. In the earlier post today, Peevesie’s Mom ji has written that we have 66 Holi songs already posted here. She refers to one of my earlier posts, in which I have written that the Hindi cinema has an intense liking for this festival. And that we still have quite a number of Holi celebration songs that are awaiting discovery out there, and also, waiting to take their place on this blog.

As I check on the Geet Kosh, I am able to identify three Holi songs in 1932, almost immediately.  There is a film by the name ‘Raas Vilaas’ from this year. The song list of this film includes the following two song titles, which are clearly Holi songs. The first one is “Ab To Ghanshyaam Mache Holi, Ab To Sukhdhaam Mache Holi”. The second one from the same film is “Rang Rangee Main Ab Rang Na Daalo”.

In the same year, there is a film by the name ‘Zaalim Jawaani’ that has a song with the title “Biraj Dhoom Machaayo Kaanha”. Like wise, I am sure there are going to be many more songs for this celebration, where the song title may not immediately lend itself for identification. Ah but. . . how longingly one wishes we had all the songs available with us.

A similar search today has led to me to this very rare song from the 1943 film ‘Zabaan’. The rarity can be measured by the fact that this song is not yet available anywhere on line. I am able to locate it in my collection, and have uploaded it today. In all likelihood, this is the first time this song has been brought online.

It is a very attractive composition. Music is from the mind of C Ramchandra and the singing voices are of Ishwar Lal and Kaushalya, supported by chorus. The lyrics of this song are written by Ratan Piya. I was wondering whether this is a new songwriter for the blog. But no, this poet has written a few songs for the film ‘Shakuntala’, also from 1943, and some of those songs are already showcased here. As I checked the Geet Kosh, I find this name appear only for three films, these two fillms from 1943 and one from 1944 (‘Maali’). After that we do not hear from this poet.

Although quite late in the day, but I would still prompt the readers to listen to this wonderful melody. And maybe not too late either. The astrological computations of the Indian system, being based on the lunar cycle does not exactly synchronize with the standard calendars that are based on solar cycles. The full moon day started around mid day yesterday, and continued well almost up to 2 pm today. And the day that we traditionally called ‘dhulendi’, which is the day of playing Holi with colors and water, continues till tomorrow. And so, although the official holiday for Holi this year has been listed for today, as the astrological charts of the Indian system, ‘dhulendi’ is tomorrow. Now figure this out as well as we can.

Early rather than late, or may be later rather than earlier – based on which system you would prefer, here is wishing all readers and friends, a very auspicious, colorful and happy Holi.

Listen to this newly available old melody, and enjoy.

Blog Day :

4991 Post No. : 16885

Today (18 march 2022), the blog had two guest posts so far, and both pertained to Holi. That created some confusion in my mind. I was under the impression that Holika dahan is on the night of 18/19 march and Holi is on 19 march 2022. To add to my confusion, I found out that Railway HQ in Southern Railway, Chennai was open today on 18 march 2022. It turns out that I was out of phase by one day from others. It turns out that even Chennai celebrates holiday today. It is only Southern Railway HQ in Chennai that has decided to work on this day. 🙂

When one looks at the festival category (on the right side of the blog), one finds that the blog has as many as 67 Holi related songs. The second most popular festival is Deepaawali (38 songs) and then Rakhi (24 songs). Looking at the nature of the festivals, it is not very difficult to guess why Holi is the most popular festival for Hind movie makers. It gives then a genuine reason to indulge in a song and dance sequence full of box office hit ingredients, viz color, revelry, two genders dancing together and getting wet thanks to coloured water sprinkled on them from pichkaari.

Even in real life, this festival is popular for similar reasons. And it is popular among trouble makers as well.

On this day, trains remain empty. It is so unlike the occasion of Deepaawali when trains run to full capacity and you cannot have berths in trains. I, not averse to act diferent from the masses, had once (nearly four decades ago)travelled by train on the day of Holi from Jamalpur to Patna and then from Patna to Ranchi. On normal days entering the train itself was a tall order. But on that day, I was perhaps the only occupant of those trains.

With 67 Holi songs under the belt of the blog, some people may feel that we have run out of Holi songs to cover. Nothing can be farther from the truth. There are still lots and lots of Holi songs that are not yet covered in the blog. I have already mentioned it earlier that HOli is the most popular festival among movie makers, and so Holi related songs keep appearing in Hindi movies even today. This genre of song is unlikely to go out of fashion in Hindi movies.

Prakashchandra himself has singlehandedly sent me dozens of Holi realted songs. Moreover, I have discovered some more Holi songs on my own. All these supply of Holi songs will last us for many Holi festivals. 🙂

The Holi song that accompanies this post is from “Banjaarin”(1960). This movie was produced and directed by Ratan KUmar for Ratan Produced by Ratan Kumar for Ratan Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Manhar Desai, Kanchan Kamini (Debutant), Lalita Kumari, Sunder, Indira Bansal, Chetan Kumar, Shree Bhagwan, Dalpat (in triple role), T.N.Sinha, Bagla, Murari, Prayag Dutt, Hari, Kapoor, Polson, Master Papoo, Bela, Paro, Laxminarayan, Rehana, Geeta, Meera etc in it.

The movie had 8 songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Banjaarin”(1960). This song is sung by Rafi, Shamshad Begam and chorus. Pt Madhur is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pardesi (or Pardeshi).

The song is picturised as a Holi festivity song on Manhar Desai, Kanchan Kamini, Lalita Kumari Sinha, Indira Bansal etc.

Lyrics of the song and other details were sent by Prakashchandra.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a (somewhat belated) happy and safe Holi.

Remarks:- It was pointed out by Mr Partha Chanda, our regular visitor with a keen eyae that the same song was discussed under “Janam Janam Ke Phere”(1957) on 5 april 2020. On checking up, that indeed turned out to be the case. On further investigation, it turned out that the song was originally intended for “Janam Janam Ke Phere”(1957), but it could not be accomodated there. Finally this song was included in “Banjaarin”(1960) which had more or less the same starcast as “Janam Janam Ke Phere”(19557) with some changes.

I thank Nahm, our regular contributor, for pointing out this fact. Since this song was composed for “Janam Janam Ke Phere”(1957) so its lyricist is Bharat Vyas and music director is S N Tripathi, unlike other songs of “Banjaarin”(1960) where Pt Madhur is the lyricist and Pardesi is the music director.

I have now replaced the earlier post of 5 april 2020 containing the same song by another Rafi Shamshad Begam duet and penned by the same lyricist (Bharat Vyas).

Blog Day : 4991 Post No. : 16884 Movie Count : 4589

Hullo Atuldom

A very very Happy Holi to all the followers of this wonderful blog. May there be lots of ‘rang and umang’ all around.

I have been following this blog for 13 years i.e. from March 2009. The head-over-heels involvement began almost instantly. I see that 66 songs, connected with this colourful festival, have been posted in all these years. I find a few songs showcasing the festival have been posted on ‘non-holi’ days too. So that must indicate that we will not have sufficient songs in coming years to post on festival days. But that is not so.

The film industry has been in existence since 1912/1913, and its romance with the festival of colours may have started almost immediately. (I did my own searching, on our blog, and found a post by Sudhirji where he has mentioned that “the songs of Holi go as far back as 1931.”)

A search on Google for the first song of Holi in Indian films came up with the song from Mehboob Khan’s “Aurat”. That song is on the blog with a post by Sudhirji which I have spoken of in the previous para. In that post he has written, and I quote

“As is inseparable, the festival of Holi and its songs from our lives, so it is also inseparable from the Hindi film screen. It is no wonder that the most celebrated of all the festivals on the Hindi screen is this festival of colors.” He also writes “In fact, many times, the situation of Holi is simply engineered into the storyline. Just so that one more song and dance sequence can be inserted into the screenplay.”

That being the love between the festival of colours and films, we will never run out of songs to post. I don’t remember the last time I wrote out a Holi-Song for the blog, but I recalled a few possible songs for the festival this year. And as is my habit I have tried to combine two occasions with this one post.

18th March would have been the 84th birthday of the smart, cute, gentleman actor Shashi Kapoor -of the charming smile. The DTH channel, that I currently follow, keeps playing interviews of yesteryear heroines like Moushumi Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Zarina Wahab etc. All of them have one thing to say about this actor – “He was very gracious and courteous. Very caring and went out of his way to make the ladies comfortable”. He never had any qualms about acting the second lead and we know of his pairing with Amitabh Bachchan, but he was equally at ease sharing screen space with Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra etc. He may not have been the best of dancers, so what, he moved with a sense of rhythm and never seemed to miss a beat.

Today’s song is from the 1981 release “Ek Aur Ek Gyarah” that was directed by Ashok Roy. It had Neetu Singh, Zarina Wahab, Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Prem Chopra, Om Prakash, P. Jairaj, Bharat Bhushan, Asrani, Master Bhagwan, etc in the cast. Laxmi-Pyare and Majrooh Sultanpuri were responsible for the music and produced by Ram Prasad Sharma. This holi-song is sung by Hemlata, Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. It has all the standard, filmy, elements needed viz. dry and wet colours, bhang, and eve-teasing too towards the end of the song. But we can also see the lady replying sternly to the guy that “joote maaroongi”. If we see the dance closely, at one point we have Shashi Kapoor desperately trying to match Neetu Singh step-for-step and breaking into some choreography of his own. A thing that always catches my attention in holi-songs is however wet the actors get their dresses are dry in the very next instant.

I must say that I have actively participated in the merry-making of Holi and I have never seen anyone go crazy yelling ‘holi hai’. I have never seen people breaking into song and dance about it. Possible that these things happen in Brij bhoomi, and parts of North India. I would like to tour that region during holi, if possible. Also I would like to see the Lath-Maar Holi of Nandgaon and Barsana.

Happy Holi to one and all once again.

Remembering Shashi Kapoor …………

Blog Day :

4925 Post No. : 16762

Today’s song is from the film with a funny name- Pilpili Saheb-1954.

When I saw this film’s posters in Hyderabad in 1954 , I laughed at the title of the film. I thought that the film had to do something with the yellow colour ! None of my friends knew the meaning of this word. After intense discussion, we decided to go to our Hindi teacher-Mathur sir. He was from Allahabad and was a very jovial person. He treated the students with a lot of humour and gentle talk. So we did not feel any fear or awkwardness to ask him this question. Otherwise, in those days asking such questions to any teacher was a certain invitation to caning !

Mathur Sir explained that Pilpili Saheb means a villager who dons modern western clothes, like Pant, Shirt, Coat, Hat etc. Listening to this reply, I felt an urge to see the film. As such the film had few comedians like Agha, Sunder and Mehmood.

Out of the 9 songs of the film, 4 songs are already on the blog. The first song appeared here on 4-3-2011. It was a duet of Meena Mangeshkar and Mohd. Rafi. That time Atul ji had called the song a very rare song and rightly so. That was because Meena Mangeshkar had sung very few songs in Hindi films. (She had already become Meena Khadikar after her recent marriage then, in 1953). She sang only 13 songs in 11 films, during a period of 38 years ( 1952 ton 1990). Earlier it was felt that her songs are only 12 in 10 films, but Mahesh Mamdapur has found out one more song of Meena from film Pehli Shadi-1953, with Asha Bhosle and Mohantara Ajinkya (nee Talpade). Thank you, Mahesh ji. Today’s song is a triad with Usha Mangeshkar and a newcomer Shaminder Singh Pal.

Here is a short Bio of singer Shaminder Singh, for the benefit of those who are not aware of this less known singer, who sang in Hindi films between 1954 to 1973.This was written by our Sadanand Kamath ji on 18-9-2012 in one of his posts. Thanks for this.

Shaminder( also known as Bhai Shaminder Singh) born in 1930/31, belonged to a wealthy landlord sikh family in Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab. It is said that the family owned almost half of the village where they stayed. Since his childhood, he was fond of music. He was a fan of Mohammed Rafi and Talat Mehmood whose songs he would listen to on the radio for hours and sing in sync with their songs. He adored Lata Mangeshkar as a Goddess. As he grew up, singing became his hobby and he could sing songs in the style of Rafi and Talat at ease.

As I said earlier, singing a duet song with Lata Mangeshkar was his obsession and to achieve his goal, he left his village for Bombay (Mumbai) some time in 1953 and met Sardul Kwatra, who was an upcoming music director. Sardul found that Shaminder had the quality of a professional playback singer. He felt that there was a man who could sing in a voice which had a blend of Rafi and Talat. So he decided to use him as a playback singer for songs in his Punjabi film ‘Vanjara’ (1954) which was being produced by Sardul’s family. In this film, there was a duet song which he was planning to get Shamshad Begum to sing with Shaminder. However, Shaminder was bent upon singing this song with Lata Mangeshkar. To fulfill his obsession, he offered a carrot to Sardul by way of financing his Punjabi film. This trick worked with Sardul. I had read elsewhere that Sardul Kwatra was a charming person especially among women folks. Probably with his charm, he must have persuaded Lata Mangeshkar to sing a Punjabi song with a newcomer Shaminder. Fortunately for Shaminder, not only this duet song but all songs sungs by him in this film became hits with the masses of Punjab.

Having tasted success, Shaminder was now interested in singing in Hindi films and again his obsession was singing a duet with Lata Mangeshkar. He got the chance to sing with her in the film ‘Pilpili Saheb’ (1954). It is said that he also got a chance to sing with Asha Bhonsle in some other films but I could not locate any such song in YT. In any case, he did get the chance to sing a song with Geeta Dutt in the film ‘Son of Alibaba’ (1954). I find that he sang almost all of his Hindi film songs under the baton of Sardul Kwatra. Later, Mohinder also took him as a playback singer for Punjabi films.

Having fulfilled his obsession to sing with Lata Mangeshkar, he was no longer very much interested in playback singing. In all, he sang only 15 Hindi songs in 8 films, namely Pilpili Saheb-54, Pensioner-54, Tees Maar Khan-55, Son of Alibaba-55, Jalwa-55, Ghar ghar mein diwali-55, Kala Chashma-62 and finally Mera Desh mera Dharam-73. By late 50s/early 60s, he turned to acting in Punjabi and Hindi films. In Punjabi films he mostly acted in lead roles while in Hindi films, he got side roles in a few films like ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’-1961, ‘Anpadh’ -1962, Bank Robbery-1969 and Sultana Daku-1972. He acted mainly in Punjabi films.
He passed away some time in the early 90s.( The article is a little adapted to include his film and song details.)

I had given the storyline of the film Pilpili Saheb-1954, some 11 years ago, as a comment on the film’s second song presented on 3-11-2011. For the benefit of our new readers, here it is…

PILPILI SAHEB(1954) was a Kwatra film production, produced by Malika and N.S.Kwatra,Directed by H.S.Kwatra and Music by Sardul Kwatra. Thus it was an all family affair.
The film cast was full of funsters like Agha,Sunder,Mehmood and a couple of beauties like Shyama,Kuldip kaur,Lalita kumari,Helen,Mumtaz(old),but still it failed at the Box office.

The story and Dialogues were by S.P.Bakshi and S.K.Prabhakar and s/play by Ravi Kapoor.

Pilpili Saheb is an Emotional-Romantic Musical-Comedy-Thriller Family Drama Film crafted with excellence by H.S. Kwatra. The Story revolves around the life of Pilpili Saheb (played by Agha)- A Kind-Hearted man living alone in this world and loves to live by his means and falls in love with Rani (played by Shyama)- A Sweet girl and wants to marry her. He crossed every obstacle and hurdles in front of him and wanted her to love him- without knowing she is married to another man (played by Pran), leading to consequences.

In this film Agha is PILPILI SAHEB.In his villege,he loves Rani(Shyama) for whom he wants to build a Taj Mahal, but first he must win her love to marry her and she should die before him !

To get her he tries everything,leaves the village,rides a Donkey,cleans utensils,becomes a photographer,acts on stage-a clown,a villain,a Hero etc etc.
There is a twist in the tale.Thru a stage artist,it is revealed that Rani is already a married woman and her husband is Pran.
Even his friend Sunder who loves Kuldip Kaur, marries and lives happily.

Indian cine goers have fixed ideas about the end results of a film-like Good wins over Bad,Lovers either unite or die,The Poor wins in the end etc.The end either has to be a Tragedy or a happy ending.

Pilpili Saheb had an utterly strange ending which was seen as cheating by the viewers, instead of getting amused. Therefore, although the film had good music, comedy scenes etc, still it failed miserably at the Box office.

Let us now listen to this rare song of Meena Mangeshkar, with sister Usha Mangeshkar and Shaminder Singh.

C Ramchandra – 40th remembrance day anniversary on 05/01/2022
—————————————————————————
Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 7
—————————————————-

Rafi sahab sang 80 + songs under C. Ramchandra, starting from 1946 to 1977 beginning with Bachchon ka Khel(1) and Safar(2) in 1946. This is followed by 6 songs in ‘Saajan’(1947), two each in “Khidki’ and ‘Nadiya ke Paar’ in 1948.

Two of the most melodious Solos, which made both Rafi sahab and C. Ramchandra , famous have seen the light of day by this time. ‘These are ‘keh ke bhi na aaye tum, ab chhupne lage taare’ in Safar 1946 and ‘ham ko tumhaara hi aasra tum hamaare ho na ho’ in Saajan 1947. Geeta Dutt, Lalita Deulkar and Shamshad Begum feature in group songs and duets with Rafi in all these films till 1949.

Then there is Duniya 1949 with Suraiyya, where Rafi sahab sings two duets and two solos.

‘Namoona’ 1949 has the first ever Rafi-Lata Duet (tadpa ke mujhe ab chhod diya ) under C. Ramchandra.

There are no more solos for Rafi Sahab, till ‘Insaaniyat’ 1955, where Rafi Sahab is part of 11 songs including 5 solos, out of total 17 songs in the film. The journey continued with films like Lutera 1955, ‘Nausherwan-e-adil’ in 1957, ‘Amar Deep’ in 1958, ‘Paigham’ in 1959 and ‘Sarhad’ in 1960. Here they both take a break from each other, I mean C. Ramchandra and Rafi Sahab, till 1970 where they work together for “Rootha na karo”. Lastly Rafi Sahab sings teams up with C. Ramchandra in 1977 for the film ‘Akbar Saleem Anarkali’ where he sings 3 duets with the south Indian legend P. Susheela.

The association seems inconsistent, with gaps in between, and appears inadequate. But by 1960 Rafi Sahab had made his name as the foremost playback singer and C. Ramchandra’s career was petering out. The fact that C. Ramchandra himself was a singer of repute, could have been one of the reasons for there being so less songs in the 50’s decade. While Rafi sahab was giving block buster musical scores for established and non-established composers through 50’s, C. Ramchandra was also making great music with films like ‘Anarkali’, Shabistaan, Albela, Azaad and Navrang etc.

The song I am presenting in this tribute post on remembrance day for C. Ramchandra is a duet song from the film ‘Saanwariya’ 1949. Lalita Deulekar is the co-singer in this song, which is written by P. L. Santoshi. I have counted 30+ songs written by P. L. Santoshi in the excel sheet of Rafi songs, between 1948 to 1968. With Lalita Deulkar, there are total 8 songs including 2 group songs.

Here is the total no. of songs to the credit of all three, composer, lyricist and co singer and the songs posted in the blog:

Artist Songs in blog Songs in HFM career
C Ramchandra(1942-1978) 556 110 movies(907)
P L Santoshi 212 664
Lalita Dewoolkar 34

The following 6 songs from Sanwariya (1949) are already posted in the blog:

Song Date of post
Preet kiye pachhtaayee re saanwariya 30 september 2012
Duaa dene waalon hamen do duaayen 2 October 2012
Jaani re hum jaani re 22 January 2013
Chale gaye angrez english gaana nahin achcha 5 May 2014
Oonchi neechi hai sadak ghoda jaaye na bhadak 29 July 2016
Bedard zamaane mein dekho…Duniya waalon dil khol hanso 20 December 2017

The present song in 7th out of ten songs in the film. Only audio link is available, but from the lyrics it appears to be a ‘holi’ song. Quite a spirited song with chorus and the chhed-chhad mode, which is usually the case with holi songs.

While writing down the lyrics, I had to take the help of head phones, as this is a very old song, almost 73 years old. The audio quality is sometimes very poor, and this song record is the same. But surprisingly or not so surprisingly, its Rafi sahab’s voice which is crystal clear and stands out as the humanely divine sound, in the portions he sings alone and along-with chorus also. He sounds more amazing in the last stanza ‘kahat kabir……’ part and the inevitable alaap in between.

If anyone present in that recording studio in 1948-49, is still alive today, surely could not have forgotten the sound of the echoing divinity of the singing voice, where it seems as if the primitive microphone in front of Rafi sahab is much too hungry to absorb his powerful voice. Or was the technique for echo in sound recording was in use back then?

I will hold this thought, till I find another amazing rendition by Rafi Sahab.

“The Right And the wrong”(1970) was written, produced and directed by Harbans (Micky) Kumar for Deluxe Films Corporation. It was the first Carribean (West Indian) colour movie, produced in Trinidad and Tobago, a country with large population of Indian origin emigrants who left India and settled in that as well as neighbouring countries (such as Guyana, Suriname etc) a few centuries ago. Many West Indian Cricketers with Indian sounding names are descendents of those Indian origin people. Names like Sonny Ramadhin, Rohan Kanhai, Alvin Kalicharan, Shivnaraine Chanderpal, Ravi Rampal, Darren Ganga, Ramnaresh Sarwan are familiar to cricket lovers.

“The Right And the wrong”(1970) had Ralph Maharaj, Angela Seukaran, Elain Le Gare, Frant Raiter,Francis ashlby, Gloria Kim david, Holly Betaudier, Jasse mcdonald,Mark mathews, Rasheed Pier khan, Susan Hawkins, Tony Maharaj,Yusuf Ali etc in it.

This movie was set in the era hen these emigrants from India were used by white people as contract labours. The movie was in English but it had two Hindi songs in it. Some Hindi movie names were roped in to create these songs.

One such song is already represented in the blog. This song is sung by Mukesh ! This song (and for that matter the movie itself) was a big hit among Indian origin people of West Indies. If one is not aware, one would consider that song as from an Indian movie. This song, O mere hamraahi kyun tera man ghabraaye was discussed in the blog on 2 January 2009, more than 12 years ago !

It turns out that the second Hindi song from this movie was a Holi festival song ! Today (29 march 2021) is the festival of Holi. These are unusual days for India and the world, when extreme caution is advisable while celebrating festivals. On this occasion, here is this “unusual” Holi song from an English language Carribean movie.

If the earlier song was sung by Mukesh, then this song is sung by Manna Dey. The song also has male and female chorus. Thakur Chhabra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vedpal Verma.

Lyrics of this song and other details ere sent to me by Prakashchandra.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and safe Holi.
