Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 26

Ten years ago, this day – the score card was six films, and six songs. The songs posted on that day are listed below.

Out of the six films, five films have since been Yippeee’d on the blog. I notice this interesting push for completing songs of a film. It seems that the preference is always to complete songs of films from 1950s and 1960s. Most of the time, when we are searching for a suitable selection for this Ten Years Challenge series, the films with songs pending are most likely to be not from 1950s and 1960s. I think it is a combination of preference for the melody and music of those two decades, plus the availability. On these two counts, the films from 1950s and 1960s would score the highest, and hence their quicker movement towards Yippeee status.

The film from this list, which still has songs remaining to be posted, belongs to 1973 – ‘Saudaagar’. When this film appeared in the theatres, the one surprising element was the lead pair – Amitabh Bachchan and Nutan, plus Padma Khanna of course. Once one got to know the storyline though, the choice would be rationalized. But at first sight, Nutan – a fairly senior lead actress by that time, paired opposite to an almost rank new comer, Amitabh Bachchan, at first raised some eyebrows. Nutan, having made her transition from child role (‘Hamaari Beti’, 1950) to lead actress roles with ‘Hum Log’ and ‘Nagina’ in 1951, had over two decades of career behind her. Amitabh, on the other hand, was just into the fifth year of his career. Having made a debut with the 1969 film ‘Saat Hindustani’, he was still seen as the Babu Moshai (‘Anand’, 1970), an actor in second lead type roles. No doubt, ‘Zanjeer’ also happened in 1973, and that put him on a fast track as an action hero. But when ‘Saudaagar’, and of course ‘Zanjeer’ were planned and were under production, the phenomenal succcess of the latter film was still into the future. At such a time, the casting of ‘Saudaagar’ surely surprised critics and audiences alike.

The film’s story is a sensitive portrayal of a love triangle, in which one side of the triangle is actually a pretense, nay a fraud, mounted by the male protagonist, for a vested interest, which is to finance his betrothal to his real love interest. It is a plain case of a dishonorable deception, which goes way beyond cheating and defrauding for money – it is a devious fraud on the heart and emotions of gullible and vulnerable widow. Moti (Amitabh) is a young trader in gur (jaggery made from the juice of date palms). Majubee (Nutan) is a relatively older widow, expert in making the jaggery from the date juice. The two have business relations, in that Moti collects the juices from the date palms, brings to Majubee, who makes jaggery from it, and Moti sells it in the market.

Phool Banu appears on the scene, and Moti falls head over heels for her. His efforts to gain a bride are thwarted by Phool Banu’s father, who demands a handsome meher amount for the marriage. Unable to procure the hefty amount demanded, Moti hatches a plan in his mind – he decides to get married to Majubee, and save money on the production process of gur, because he would not have to pay Majubee, once he becomes her husband. Majubee is shocked and surprised by the proposal, refuses at first, but then slowly gives in to the cajoling and pursuance by Moti. They get married. At the end of one season of gur making, Moti saves enough to pay the meher for his desired bride. He divorces Majubee, and immediately marries Phool Banu. Majubee is devastated, and completely broken, at being used such by this devious man, who has used her and defrauded her of her vulnerable honor in life.

But the story does not end here. As it turns out, Phool Banu has no inkling of the gur making proces. Her main interests in life are “Sajna Hai Mujhe Sajna Ke Liye“. Moti, unable to now supply good quality gur in the market, loses his reputation, and his business. The affluence is gone, the reputation is gone, and so is the dream of a happily-ever-after life with his beloved. And the story moves further. . . to be dealt with in another post later. 🙂

The film is produced by the house of Rajshree – Rajshree Pictures Pvt Ltd, Bombay. It is directed by Sudhendu Roy. Besides the three important stars already named, the impressive cast of actors includes Trilok Kapoor, Murad, Dev Kishan, V Gopal, CS Dubey, Pardesi, Narbada Shankar, Santosh Ghosh, Nadira, Ras Raj, Paritosh Choudhary, Ashok Mitra, Samar Rai, Jugnu, Chandu Allahabadi, Ramesh Verma, Shriram Shastri, Chaturvedi, Bihari, Leela Mishra, Paro, Habeeba, Salma, Sitara, Suraiya, Master Saka, Master Firdaus, and Baby Shamina.

Geet Kosh lists seven songs for the film. All the songs are created by the lyricist – MD Ravindra Jain. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. On screen, it is performed by Padma Khanna, as she is walking back home from the river banks, after having crossed it on a boat. Amitabh has seen her, and is following her from the boat itself. Of course Padma Khanna, i.e. Phool Banu, is very much aware that she is being followed by this lanky and handsome young man. So she is playing the siren’s role to the hilt. Introduces herself in the song, she tells her pursuer about herself and her youth, and clearly communicates that she is verily enjoying the attention she is getting from him. In a couple of close shots, Amitabh looks very much like a provoked predator, as he eyes this willing beauty dancing for his benefit.

A catchy song, and enticing words. . . both characters are hunters, laying veritable traps for each other. 🙂

Colorful greetings to all readers and friends. May this festival of colors, bring happiness and good health, to yourself, and to everyone you know. 🙂  May these colors multiply and spread good cheer across every day in the calendar.

On this blog, we are celebrating the eleventh iteration of this festival. Statistics is one thing – apart from that, the wonderful fact is that the songs of Holi in Hindi films, seem like a supply with no end. Of course yes, when the films and their directors continue to add more songs celebrating this festival every year.

I bring to your attention, this wonderfully fabulous song of the spirit of Holi, from a really very recent film – ‘Ye Jawaani Hai Deewaani’ from 2013. This film was one of the most successful films of that year, and I am sure you must be aware of it, even though it is possible that your tastes and preferences are rooted in the 1940s and 50s which is the gold standard for melody and music in Hindi films. However, that does not mean that music of the decades after the golden . . . – well it does deserve credit. It does catch your attention, and the music and songs still grow into your mind to become darling memories.

Although I have myself not been paying much attention and time to the music of the current years. But quite decidedly, along comes a film with a blast of music that forcefully captures your attention, and insists on becoming part of your list of favorites. Something quite of this sort happened with this 2013 film, for me. And it started very much with this song.

After a long time, I must say, that I have encountered a song of this festival, that simply takes your breath away. The spirit of celebration, and all the emotions that uniquely make this festival what it is – is not so totally and carefully represented every time. But surely, this song does it.

There is color, lots and lots of it.
There is water – it starts off with that.
There is cheer – for every person who is part of this song, and everyone else who may be listening and enjoying it.
There is music – yes of course.
There is dancing – goodness you must be kidding.
There is ‘bhaang’, and there is noise.
There is a large dipping pool – nay, a large dunking pool.
Oh yes, there is “छेड़ छाड़” – chhed chhaad, there is “ज़ोर ज़बरदस्ती” – zor zabardasti.
There are fair maidens running away to save themselves from being smothered with color and water.
And there are insistent and forceful young charmers who will not take ‘no’ for an answer. Or rather they do not even care what the answer is – they will force the color into your face and hair. They will chase you, and run you down, and cuddle you – and they will be more insistent, the more resistance one puts up.
There are drums.
There is singing – very loud, yes.
There is nonsense lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” – lattu padosan ki bhabhi ho gayi.
There are meaningful verses – “ज़ुल्मी ये हाजिर जवाबी हो गई. . .” – zulmi ye haazir jawaabi ho gai.
There is “नोक झोंक” – nok-jhonk – that is very verbal and very physical too.
There is humor, and there is suggestive propositioning – like “अरमानों में बेहिसाबी हो गई” – armaanon mein behisaabi ho gai.
And there is flights of fancy.
And there is uncharacteristic expressions of festivity from unexpected quarters
And there is a glimmer of surprised realizations.
The matters of heart, unexpressed, are just beneath the surface sheen.
And of course there is a shock of unexpected and amazing realizations – yes, this could surely be it.
There is joy of shared happinesses.
There is a loud cheer of good spirit.
And everything, each and every one of these ingredients put together into the mix to convince you – yayyy, it is Holi – get colored, and get wet, very wet.

Amazing, simply and truly amazing – after a long time, comes along a new sound that astonishes the mind with the honesty with which the true spirit of the festival is so sweetly captured. Needless to say it – but yes, I am quite truly floored.

I have not yet seen the complete film. I got introduced to the songs of this film over the past many months. Especially this Holi song was forcefully dumped into my notice just about a year ago, yes around the last iteration of this celebration. Enthused as I was, I could not make and present a post in time for the festival; now coming around to it after a wait of a full year. Even with this passage of time, the charm of this song has not diminished even one bit. I simply do not seem to be getting enough of this song. 🙂

The lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and the music is by Preetam. Singing voices are of Vishal Dadlani and Shalmali Kholgade. On screen, the song is performed by Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapoor and a ton of dancers. Deepika and Ranbir are so truly convincing in the complete free form enjoyment in this song. The movie makes its debut on our blog with this song.

Wishing a grand celebration of this festival today, to all friends and readers. Go out, get doused in colors, make up some fun lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” types, and sing it out at the top of the voice. It does not matter – it is Holi. Just down one glass of bhang and then blame it for everything. 😀 😀 😀

Hullo Atuldom

The song with this post is a Peevesie discovery. I don’t remember when exactly, but definitely a few years back she mentioned about this song to me. And it looks like she has seen and enjoyed the video too and it has stayed in her memory. She remembered exactly how the song starts. And the dance steps of Govinda and Madhuri. Awesome combination. Just like in the previous Madhuri Dixit song where with Prabhu Deva as her co-dancer, here too, she is excellent. She is in a different orbit when she has a dancer for a co-actor. In “Que sarasara” she matched Prabhu Deva step for step, here it is a typically Govinda dance that is a treat.

So what, if the lyrics are non-sensical. The song is set as a fun-song, going by the video I have a feeling that Madhuri has accidentally eaten or drunk something intoxicating and Govinda is trying his best to control her in the given circumstances.

A few days back I had sent a song from ‘Disco Dancer’ to Atulji and then I had made up my mind to follow it with another Mithun song which features a ‘mithai‘. There were other songs from the 70s which were running through my mind for this particular post which is for a very special occasion. Songs which showed the male running the household while the female is away at work. But on reviewing those songs I felt that the song which Peevesie suggested is better. Why? Well for one today is a party occasion and “mithai toh banti hai” – it is our Ranchiwaale Gaanewala’s birthday (now its about time to give him a new name, he is no longer in Ranchi 🙂 ). It has a lot of activity in it and our sutradhaar is a hyperactive person. I don’t need to give any proof to show his level of activeness, his commitment to his pets, work and the blog is proof enough. There have been days when I have found him online early in the morning with a post at 5:45 a.m. and a few times his last post has been at 12 in the night. Hats off to his dedication. Approximately 10804 posts (on the day this is being written) and still having a lot of ideas to connect with songs and give us new post daily – AMAZING. Thank you Atulji for giving us this group and site to turn to.

Before I sat to write all this, I read through what I had written last year and I feel the same even now- May God give Atulji health, peace of mind, lots of time and good infrastructural support in the form of unending internet and electrical connections. And we will not mind him being absent from the blog when his family is around as they are more entitled to his time. (Hope he enjoyed his first vacation, this year, after he started the blog) And hope he doesn’t mind us pestering him with our farmaishes. Here is hoping he gives us many opportunities to celebrate and we will keep presenting him with lovely songs.

Coming to today’s song it is from the 1990 release “Izzatdaar” which starred the stalwart Dilip Kumar in the lead with the south Indian actor Raghuvaran as villain. Another southern star- Swapna- played Dilip Kumar’s daughter, Madhuri played his grand daughter and Govinda plays a man who works for the underworld (I think) but gets reformed on falling in love. (the powers of the feeling of love 🙂 ). It was a revenge story with Dilip Kumar avenging his daughter’s death etc. with lot of Bollywood masala. It was directed by K Bapaiah, Anand Bakshi wrote songs which were composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Amit Kumar and Alka Yagnik are the playback.

It would be late 1960s, early 1970s – फिल्में देखने का चस्का चढ़ा था। Did not have much more than some fanciful fancies at that time, and very little understanding. I would fancy the heroes, especially Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar etc. And I would have lasting crush on the leading ladies; generally lasting for a few weeks. I would fancy them to be my leading ladies 😉 – Sadhna, Asha Parekh, Mumtaz, Saira Banu etc.

Besides these two types of fancies, there was, yes one more. This was not so much of a fancy, rather it was more of an abhorrent fright. Of a special person when he appeared on the screen. And a panic would run through the mind and I would clutch a parent’s hand and whisper “oye, Pran aa gaya”.

Such was the dread in the minds of us pre teen kids. Whenever we saw him enter the frame, our hearts were like – now something bad is going to happen. He is going to bully someone, he is going to beat up someone, he is going to insult someone, he is going to cheat someone, he is going to put his weight on a lady and make her scream. . . Ah yes, these were the type of stereotype images that were associated with Pran, and we despised him for all our childhood.

Fast forward now to mid 1990s. I was in the US, and had a long stint in the city of Lansing in Michigan, working on a state govt. project. Lansing is comparatively a small town, despite the fact that it is the capital of Michigan state. There were only two other things besides the state government – the state university and a cornflakes factory owned by Kellogs. And being in Michigan, we were snowed in for six months, and chilled out for another four. We just got a warm season for two months – July and August.

So there was not much to do in that town, other than concentrate on your work. For me, there was a grand saving grace. The small town had a big video library of Hindi films, run by a Pakistani national and a very dear friend, to date – Akbar Bhai. It was not long before I became his best customer, and just for my sake, he would communicate with other dealers in the country and sometimes even travel out, to get the films that I would be requesting of him. I purchased two Toshiba VCRs, bought many packs of VHS tapes, and spent a lot of time copying videos of songs from the VHS tapes that I rented from him.

Sorry for this longish digression, I am coming to the point. The net is that for the few years that I spent in Lansing, I watched and replayed a ton of Hindi films that were available on VHS – of course my choice would taper off after 1970s. In one set of many weeks together, the movies that I rented from him, were a combination of many leading heros, and many genres. But all of them had one thing in common. The villain was Pran. In each and every one of these films, Pran would be getting a hiding of his life in the last 10 to 15 minutes of every film. After having sat through probably a score of films over a period of 4 to 5 weeks, my mind changed and started sympathizing with him. No matter what the film was, he would get beaten up black and blue at the end. And to add insult to injury, he was forced to apologize and plead for forgiveness, or summarily be taken away by the police.

Really telling you, I started to feel sorry for him. And I started to wonder. Day in and day out, he would be shooting films with his co stars, and on every set and every studio floor, he would be taking a beating in front of hundreds of onlookers, every single time. And my mind started to build upon a psychology of such an individual. Of course it did strike me somewhere within this analysis, that yes, money is also involved. But then I rationalized – if I were given money, just for getting beat up every week and in every film I worked in, I would throw away the money, and walk away. But the money angle aside, I used to wonder at this gluttony for punishment. In every film, he misbehaves with ladies, he cons his own family members, he bullies and beats up people. And then, he gets beat up real good for the happy ending of a film. And my mind was like – does this guy never learn? Does he never give up?

I never did see the film ‘Guddi’ (1971) in its first runs. I would get to see it many years later, maybe on Doordarshan or maybe on a VHS play. An inkling of the true nature of this gentleman – I encountered for the first time in this film. Kusum (a teenager, role played by Jaya), who is smitten with a crush for actor Dharmendra, is taken to Bombay by her uncle, Utpal Dutt, and is given a tour of the film studios – a view of how the films are actually made, and what these stars are in real life behind the scenes. So there is a scene, in which Jaya is with Dharmendra, and Pran walks by. They greet each other; and Kusum is hiding behind Dharmendra in fear. Dharmendra admires Pran’s wrist watch, and Pran immediately takes it off and presents it to Dharmendra. After Pran leaves, Jaya reacts strongly, insisting to Dharmendra to return the watch – “इस में कोई चाल है” is what she says. Dharmendra starts to laugh, and then explains. That Pran Saab in real life is an impeccable gentleman, a complete reverse of what his screen image is. He is an amiable, a very friendly, a very kind and a very helpful person.

Along with Guddi (Kusum), it was also a wiping away of a fanciful sheen in my mind, associated with the person called Pran. Then of course, from 1967 onwards, he had started appearing in character roles other than as a villain, and had a complete makeover of his outward personality over the next few years.

But that image has sustained, because the films exist. That is what typecasting does to you. In reality, Pran is somewhat of a popular name in north India, amongst Punjabi and Hindi speaking families. In the 1950s and 60s, the dread of his roles was so great that actually, families stopped naming their children with the word Pran, and its variations. The Gabbar Singh gloat about “बीस बीस कोस तक॰ ॰ ॰” was still to come many years later. 😀 😀

Today (12th Feb) is the birth anniversary of Pran Saab. I have picked this song from the 1964 film ‘Pooja Ke Phool’ for the anniversary remembrance today. Yes, there is a particular reason. It is one of the rare occasions, when Pran Saab has lip sync-ed a song, and danced on screen, from the era of his continued reign as the arch villain of Hindi films. Of course, after 1967 and ‘Upkar’, when he transitioned into character roles, and that too in a big and significant way, he got to perform many a song on screen. In fact, there was a period of time in 1970s and 80s that specific and meaty roles were written for him, and the screen performance almost always included a song lip synced by him. But in the era till the 1960s, he just has an occasional song assigned to him.

Although I have not made a definitive search for them, I recall the following; the duet “Jise Dhoondhti Phirti Hai Meri Nazar” from the film ‘Sheesh Mahal’ (1950); then the fun song from ‘Munim ji’ (1955) – “Dil Ki Umangen Hain Jawaan”. This latter song is also a unique piece of music – Pran Saab has sung for himself in this song. Yes, of course, the iconic “Hai Aag Hamaare Seene Mein. . . Hum Bhi Hain, Tum Bhi Ho” from the musical bonanza ‘Jis Desh Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960). Sterling performance, as Pran Saab rides two horses simultaneously, standing on the back of the horses, one foot on each horse.

And then we come to today’s song. The song is a dance sequence being performed by Gopikrishan Maharaj and Madhumati. In the three antaraa song, the middle antaraa turns out to be a fantasy play, as Pran, who is actually an audience on the side, daydreams himself to be performing the song, along with Sandhya Roy. the lady companion that I am not able to name. So the middle antaraa is performed on screen by Pran Saab and Sandhya Roy his lady companion. Now this performance, a folk dance type steps, trying to emulate someone none other than the great Gopikrishan Maharaj himself, is a type of performance that one does not associate with him (at least in this phase of his career), and none other that I have seen in any other film. I request our knowledgeable friends and readers on the blog to please add more such instances, if they are aware. And yes, the request also includes help to identify the actress who is his lady companion in this clip.

‘Pooja Ke Phool’ is the typical south Indian family drama that is produced by the prestigious banner of AVM and directed by Bheem Singh. The extreme emotionalism of such family dramas, plus the complexity (zaniness??) of the plots and sub plots, sometimes makes this category of films insufferable. So in this film, Pran is the husband of the niece of Dharmendra. Forget the age factor, even the appearances of the characters do not do justice to them. To top it, he (Pran) is also having an amorous fling on the side. In this song, we see him come to see this street performance along with his lady love from the extra-marital affair. Dharmendra too, chances to be on the spot. He sees the two together, and walks away in anger. A little later in the film, the lady starts to demand rights and shares as a wife. She threatens to kill him. The two meet, and in the melee that ensues, the lady gets killed. Mohan Choti is an eyewitness. However, Dharmendra takes on the blame, just so that his niece’s life and home is not jeopardized. Case comes to the court. Ashok Kumar is the public prosecutor, and he has this personal thing against Dharmendra – he has ditched Ashok Kumar’s daughter, and married someone else. Now enter the daughter, Mala Sinha, who is also a lawyer. She comes to the court as the defense lawyer for Dharmendra. Despite his repeated confessions in the court, the case is made to continue. Dharmendra and Mala Sinha were an amorous pair once, but circumstances led Dharmendra to marry a blind girl (Nimmi). If all this does not sound too complicated yet, maybe it is time to watch the film itself. 😀 😀

The songs of this film have been penned by Rajendra Krishan and the music is composed by Madan Mohan.

I would like to write about one more thing, related to this song. The choreography of this dance is done by Gopikrishan Maharaj himself. And that simply is excellent. The dance movements are very imaginatively sequenced, and very excellently executed, including the facial expressions and the twitching of eyebrows. The pace of the song and the pace of the singing is – fast. And the dance steps themselves are so energetic and so beautifully arranged. Pran Saab surely has his work cut out as he takes on the 2nd antaraa on screen.

So now let us enjoy this wonderful peppy dance number. And remember this very lovable villain of the Hindi cinema.

“Zindagi Zindagi” (censored on August 19th 1972) starred Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Farida Jalal, Ramesh Deo, Anwar Husain, supported by Shyama, Jalal Agha, Master Tito, Chaya Devi, Gajanan Jagirdar etc. Music was by Sachin Deb Burman who led the list of playback singers (the song with the titles is in the voice of Sachinda and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The other playback singers were Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar. Producer was Nariman A. Irani and A.P. Sharma and director was Tapan Sinha.

The movie (what little I saw of it) is based in a village where there is a hospital of which Sunil Dutt is a doctor and revolves around the life of the villagers and casteism. Ramesh Deo played Choudhury Ramprasad’s vagabond son. Today’s song has him {Ramesh Deo} lip-sync in the voice of Manna Dey through the lanes of the village and making politician-type promises of sadak (road), school, railgaadi (train), pul (bridge) etc. all in one breath.

Possibly the first movie in which I made note of an actor called Ramesh Deo was Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Anand”;that too not when the movie was released (I was a toddler at that time) but when I saw it on Doordarshan.

Then subsequently I saw him in “Jeevan Mrityu” (on tv of course) which came before “Anand” and other movies like “Khilona” “Lakhon mein ek” “Dus Lakh” and numerous other movies. He mostly played characters that were grey or completely negative, though occasionally he played a lovable friend as in “Shikar” or “Anand” or “Rampur Ka Laxman” “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka” etc.

Now why am I talking about Ramesh Deo ? Because he turns a year older today (30 january 2018). He turns 89 today-unbelievable that he has been around for so long. He made his debut in Marathi films in 1951/52 and his Hindi debut was in the 1962 Rajshri Productions movie “Aarti”. Recently (meaning 2-3 years back) I saw him on some Marathi channel where they were felicitating him on his long innings in the film world- Marathi and Hindi. They also showed footage of his contribution to the industry and then it dawned on me that he has produced feature films, television serials, ad films etc. He is active even now as can be seen in the surf excel ad which has him play an adoring grandpa with Vidya Sinha as the grandma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiHhHKE_iMI . Ramesh Deo’s family is into entertaining the world- his wife is actress Seema Deo and sons Ajinkya- an actor and Abhinay- a director of movies, ads and television serials.

Honestly speaking I landed on a song mouthed by Ramesh Deo by accident. In the long time that he has spent in movie (almost 250 Hindi movies) the number of times he has sung songs on screen can be counted on one’s fingers. This is one such song that reminds me of “woh jhootha hai vote na usko dena” from “Namak Haram” though here it looks like he is making false promises. 🙂

“Kaamchor”(1982) was directed by K Vishwanath. This movie, a remake of Telugu hit “Subhodayam”(1980) had Rakesh Roshan, Jaya Prada, Tanuja, Sujit Kumar, Suresh Oberoi, Shreeram Lagoo, Nita Mehta, Pinchoo Kapoor, Asrani, Bhagwan Dada etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it that became quite popular during its time.

Five songs from the movie have bee discussed in the blog in the past.

Here is the sixth and final song from the movie. It is a roadside tamasha song which is sung by Kishore Kumar and it is picturised on Rakesh Roshan, Asrani (playing an astrologer and carrying a forune telling parrot with him) and a female dancer whom I am unable to identify.

Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
