Hullo Atuldom

I must admit at the outset that I have very limited understanding of some words that appear in today’s song. I know it is not possible to call the lyricist and ask for meanings. I know for sure that there are followers to this blog who will explain what “Jaanejaan” and “Janejana” actually mean. All along I have been thinking that both mean “beloved”, am I right? I hope it is not too late to learn, considering these words have been used in umpteen songs of Bollywood, since god knows when!!!

This song has been penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri who is known for meaningful songs from the ’40s. It has been tuned by Anu Malik and sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. Onscreen pair is Aamir Khan with Mamta Kulkarni. It is from the Ashutosh Gowarikar directed “Baazi” (1995). If I am not wrong this was his directorial debut. It was a cop story where Aamir Khan (the cop) is on the trail of people involved in a multi-crore rupee international scandal. The movie was slammed by critics as an ambitious mish-mash of many Hollywood movies like ‘Rambo’, ‘Die-hard’ etc. put together with ample doses of desi masala. But the masses seemed to have liked it as it was a moderate success at the box-office.

With this song we are wishing Aamir Khan on turning an year older.

Some sites on the internet say that Sadhana Sargam, the female playback of this song, had her birthday on 7th March; though the anniversary page of our blog gives the date as 14th March. Whatever be the date here is wishing this singer, with a sweet voice, all the best for a music-filled life. She has been around since she was barely 9 when she sang in the chorus for the song from “Trishna” with Kishore Kumar as the lead singer.

Her mother was a classical singer and music teacher who knew Anil Mohile, who was then arranger for Kalyanji-Anandji. He introduced baby Sadhana to the music composers and she was part of their troupe on many stage shows. She is a trained classical singer too as is evident in her control over sur and taal at any pitch. It is a small wonder that she was a much sought after singer through the ’90s. She has sung in many Indian languages and has nearly 150 Tamil songs to her credit. She has been nominated a few times at the Filmfare awards but they have eluded her so far. The National Award that she has won was for a Tamil song.

Let us wish Sadhana Sargam a very Happy Birthday with this post.

I could not find whose ghazal is this is, but giving it here as it rhymes with the title of the movie ‘Dil Chahta hai” (2001).

The song is a duet by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. All the songs of this film are penned by Javed Akhtar and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. At the turn of the century, the melodious songs, sufiana, fusion, newer music instruments were all the new fad. And the foreign location shoots were also back with a bang in mainstream hindi films. It was not only the Yash Chopra films that were shot in Switzerland etc. There is the whole world to explore and Hindi films have been shot at many locations.

The film ‘Dil chahta hai’(2001) was shot at Australia, when the character Akash played by Amir Khan, moves to Sydney to look after his father business operation in Australia. The character of Akash was the meaty one in the film, with all the jokes to crack, all the drama to enact. It was the role of Sameer played by Saif Ali Khan that was less complex, understated but full of contradictions. Akshaye Khanna’s character was Siddarth, the quite sensitive artist, who looks at the world through the artistic eye.

I saw the movie again recently after this last post and thought again, that it is hard to believe that it is a 20 year old movie. Obviously made at the turn of the century, it has those vintage mobile phones, which look like antiques to today’s generation. Our generation has seen the most sweeping changes in lifestyle, of all the previous generations. The earlier generations, had very less comforts than us but I dare say their happiness quotients was higher than us, as they had less expectations and desires. The more our generation has achieved, it wants more of it, the comforts and the excitement, and thus losing out on the contentment in life.

Moving to the film, it has a few one liner jokes that have become a part of lingo between friends in my generation, like “hum log cake khaane ke liye kahin bhi jaa sakte hain”, ‘Waise bhi perfection ko improve karna mushkil hotaa hai”, ‘Kitni ajeeb baat hai, ke ham teenon hi Sydney jaa rahe hain – tum, main aur yeh flight” wagera wagera !

The song of this post is a duet by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, with composers producing unique musical sounds, using newly invented music instruments. The song is shot in and around Sydney, in parks showing ancient trees, with Amir and Priety take the arial tour in a helicopter, overlooking the famous Lotus shaped Opera house at the famous harbor, picnic in the garden near the marina, travel in the city bus etc. I am not sure if one of the parks shown is the Botanical garden or not. The characters are having food at the cafes, and roaming around down town or up town whichever way you want to look at it, walking the harbour bridge which has the railway, road and walkway on the same level, while singing this song. Literally a steel sheet re-enforced ghat is shown to emphasis the line ‘pyaar ke ghat jo utarte hain’, which is carpeted with Chinese grass :-).

After one such outing the couple is returning home by the metro train, when Priety misses it, and left alone at the platform, while the train moves away. While Priety is waiting, an old man looking like a poor street person is approaching her and she is scared. At the same time Aamir returns by the returning train, and seeing that the old man has scared Preity, goes and hugs the old man saying ‘did she scare you?” ‘she did? how mean of her”. This is a movie and hence the joke. The big city crime scene is not a joke anywhere in the world.

Australia is a unique country, in a sense second only to USA. USA has a lot more mixture of different races. But Australia is something, which never sought independence from the colonial powers, because by the time the British empire was done with the continent, the aboriginals were extinct and the survivors were the one who had come to serve the British interests. So, no nativity and no going back to the past and not much history recorded of the pre-colonial era. Only to look towards the future, which is not a bad state to be in, all things considering. No wonder, it has been the land of opportunities for European, Asians, chinese, afrikans and Polynesians alike in the 20th century. It thrives in its solitary splendor in the southern hemisphere with jewel like cities dotting its coast line. The Chinese might have been the neighbors of long forgotten aboriginal races of the continent, as the continent is a snug fit into the south china sea. When the continents were a single land mass, of course.

Today is the 76th Birthday of Javed Akhtar, so to celebrate, here is this new age song penned by him. A poet is a champion who plays with words, and Javed Akhtar is a champion of champions in this regard.

Wishing all a happy Dassera. I know parts of India celebrated the festival on Sunday and parts are celebrating it today. I think that has something to do with the movement of the Moon from one constellation to another or mostly the phases of the moon which doesn’t necessarily follow the Gregorian calendar. I was confused as to the exact date for Vijaya Dashami or Dassehra and put the query to a group of knowledgeable friends and this is the reply I got:

October 23 Friday 7:00 onwards Ashtami
October 24 Saturday 7:00 onwards Navami
October 25 Sunday 7:45 onwards Dashami
October 26 Monday 9:00 onwards Ekadashi.

Now going by that reply we have Dashami till 9 a.m. today but for convenience sake (read working day/ holiday) there are many (in Kerala atleast) who would have celebrated the festival. But for the pandemic even Ram Leela would have come to a close yesterday (Sunday) with RavanDahan, as Dashami was present in the evening hours. Don’t know if it was held this year!!!!

But today’s post is not a lesson on the Panchang that Indians follow and neither am I the competent authority to comment on the Sun, Moon and the planetary movements. As always my post is to wish a celebrity on turning an year older.

This celebrity is the daughter of Producer/ director of ‘Anhonee’, ‘Khel Khel Mein’ ‘Khuddar’ etc.Ravi Tandon’s daughter- Raveena Tandon turns an year older today. She made her debut in 1991, at the age of 17,in a movie produced by G.P.Sippy and directed by Anant Balani “PattharKePhool” which had Salman Khan as the hero. She then went on to act with Sunny Deol, Govinda, Akshay Kumar, Shahrukh Khan, Anil Kapoor. 1994 saw her star in “Zamaane Se Kya Darna” with Sanjay Dutt, “Dilwale” with Suneil Shetty and Ajay Devgan, “Insaniyat” with Sunny Deol, “Imtihaan” with Saif Ali Khan and Sunny Deol, “Laadla” with Anil Kapoor, “Andaz Apna Apna” with Aamir Khan, “Aatish” again Sanjay Dutt and Mohra with Akshay Kumar. She also played herself in a song-cameo in Saif Ali Khan- Akshay Kumar starrer “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” and a role in a Tamil movie in 1994. She took a hiatus post marriage but was seen in a cameo in PuriJagannadh directed “Bbuddah… Hoga Tera Baap” (2011) as she got a chance to do a romantic scene with Amitaabh Bachchan whose sister she had played in “Bade MiyanChhoteMiyan” in the ‘90s. Since 2011 we see her in a movie or two per year plus she has conducted a few shows on television. On her personal front, she had adopted two young girls when they were 10 and 8 when she herself was only in her 20s. After marriage she has two children of her own.

Her most popular song of the 1994 earned her the nickname the ‘mast mast’ girl. Though she has never claimed to be ‘Mast’ meaning wonderful. So also the other birthday personality.
He is our own Rajaji. He is (to use a Hindi expression) a ‘yaaron ka yaar’. He is a devoted family man. He is deeply sensitive and touched by many current occurrences in this world of ours. But the one thing that introduced us to him or shall I say the two things that got us connected to him-Cricket and Hindi Film Music are also dear to his heart.

He can write pages and pages about his love for the works of Sahir Ludhianvi and ponder about what would have been Sahir’s take on the life in this age and time. And he can do the same when he writes posts on his favourite Rajesh Khanna, Dev Anand, Mohd Rafi. He has told me that he can keep listening to Rafi songs all day and night and not tire of it. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate Kishore Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan etc. He claims that he is just discovering movies of the 80s which he had banished for their deteriorating quality and quantity, he gives them a “Pass” certificate only no high marks to them. But even there he may relish and enjoy individual scene of the typical masala kind. I am sure he will enjoy the visual that the accompanying song has to offer.

It has the comic cop Paresh Rawal running around trying to dance in step with Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon. We have Tej Sapru exchanging a briefcase with an associate (would like to know who it is). Suniel Shetty is stalking them and please keep in mind that Akshay Kumar is a cop in disguise out to catch Tej Sapru and his associate.

This is a new age song which should appeal to the other birthday girl of this group. She is not an active participant and her father is. I hope she is a “Mast” child, meaning wonderful child.
There is another person, my first playmate, who has her birthday today. I cannot imagine how I was as a toddler before she entered my family in the arms of my Mom.
With this post I wish Raveena Tandon, Rajaji and the two unnamed girls “A Very Happy Birthday” May God bless them with lots of Health and Happiness.

There is no better way of describing a poet and paying tribute to him, than quoting some of his work. So the major part of this post is going to be taken up by Majrooh sahab’s sukhan or kalaam. Today is the 101st birth Anniversary of the poet from Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the state in India which is the known as the ‘gehwara’ of urdu civilization. There are great shua’ra from other parts of the country, but those poets will also agree that UP is essentially the cradle of urdu. Like all children, the ‘khari boli’ urdu has also grown up and left the cradle. So that other children may enjoy the same nourishment and contentment that urdu had in its childhood.

Maybe some caravan’s upped and left the homeland and took their belongings. The cradle did not want to go away from the roots, so they took the embellishments and the toys from the cradle, and left if bereft. But some of the old dolls and some pillows were not taken with them as there was not enough space. They remained with the cradle and they strived to make the gehwara, the playground of urdu. Majrooh Sultanpuri is one of those old pillows which graced the old cradle.

After all this sentimentality, I don’t wish to write more. I have written a few posts about Majrooh and so have other contributors, in the past. So I will let his poetry do the talking.

The song with this post is written by Majrooh sultanpuri, and the music director is Anu Malik. It is from Akele ham Akele Tum (1995). Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik are the singers. Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala are the actors in the film, who are singing it on screen.

This is the fourth song in the ‘inspired/copied’ song series. The inspiration behind this song is “The Godfather theme” .

During the tough months of April/May, someone posed this quiz in the family group on whatsapp :

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 7

Welcome all to this post under the ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ – (2010-2020).
Once again we have a movie which has completed a ‘decade’ on the blog with only one of its song posted on the blog.

This movie is ‘Raja Babu-1994’.

Regulars on the blog would be surprised why I am presenting a song from this movie? I am neither a Govinda fan nor is this a song that triggers any memories in my mind.

I want to clarify that I do have a connected memory associated with this movie and I watched it too. But it was not by choice, rather to make used of my waiting time, when I was forced to endure wait of twelve to sixteen hours at Guna (M.P) Railway station.

I was reminded of that incident when I came across the name of thjis movie while checking for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’.

I was travelling from Nagpur to Kota via Bina. At Guna station our train was terminated as there was some problem on the Guna-Kota route. Onward journey was possible only next day. My cousin (from Nagpur) was also travelling with me so we decided to take a round of Guna. There was a theatre near the railway station running this movie ‘Raja Babu-1994’ so (reluctantly for me, because I was not much interested in watching all the new movies then) we decided to watch this movie.

I don’t remember now if I like it then or not.

I think I had only watched very few of Govinda movies viz. ‘Marte Dam Tak-1987’, ‘Swarg-1990’, ‘Hum-1991’, ‘Aankhen-1993’ when I was staying at Kota and watching movies with colleagues on Sundays/holidays was ‘customary’.
However, later on I like him very much in ‘Coolie No.1-1995’, ‘Deewana Mastaana-1997’, ‘Bade Miyaan Chhote Miyaan-1998’ etc.

Recently I get to watched his ‘Bhaagam Bhaag-2006’ on TV.

Coming back to today’s post, one song from ‘Raja Babu-1994’-the much talked about song (or the most popular?) from this movie- has already been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the second song from the movie to be posted on the blog.

‘Raja Babu-1994’ was directed by David Dhawan for ‘Sapna Arts’. It was produced by Nandu G. Tolani. It had Govinda, Karishma Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Gulshan Grover, Prem Chopra and Kadar Khan, and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by K. Bhagyaraj. Dialogues were written by Anees Bazmee. A.K. Rana was the Chief Asstt. Director and A Muthu was the Editor of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1994.

Lyrics for the seven songs (including one multiple version song) in this movie were written by Sameer and music was composed by Anand-Milind.

As valentine day party songs go, this one is not really so big on the event. Except for the heart shaped balloons, there is no other indication of this being a valentine day song. Point to be noted is that, the blog seems to have ignored this occasion also, along with a host of other days that are specifically designated throughout the year. Whatsapp university does a quite adequate job of reminding us of all these days, be it mother’s day, father’s day, couple day, hug day, chocolate day to name a few. These are just the days which came readily to mind, because a few of them were during this past week.

I remembered this song today just out of the blue from the film “Dil to paagal hai”. I remember seeing this film in theatre, must be in 1997. My elder sister was very fond of Yash Chopra films and the star cast was, as it is very much ascending stars of the era. Nevertheless I remember at one point in the film, where I told my sister that I don’t want to see this film and we are leaving. Which point I don’t care to share here.

This song talking of ‘Chaand’ & ‘Raat’ is actually compliant with my posts series titled ‘Chaandni Raatien”. Composer is Uttam Singh and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. It is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Shah Rukh and Karishma are at a Valentine Day party, whereas Madhuri Dixit is at her home, dreaming and singing along. At this point I think Shah Rukh and Madhuri haven’t met each other, but are scheduled to meet and fall in love. This song is in anticipation of the things to come in the story, because you see they have read the script and the song was ready, so the situation had to be created for it. Udit Narayan sings for Shah Rukh and Lata Mangeshkar is singing for Madhuri and Karishma both. The song is very catchy too despite being a mood song.

The film is full of melodious hit songs which were a rage then. Film and the songs won quite a few awards too. This song is having the tunes of other songs from the same film, as interlude. Again as I said the characters are anticipating the songs to feature in the film later on. Good imagination all around.

The date today is 15 november 2019. It was on this day thirty years ago (on 15 november 1989) that Sachin Tendulkar made his test debut. By a remarkable coincidence, it was on this day fifty years ago (viz on 15 november 1969) that Gundappa Vishwanath made his test debut as well.

A test match is being played today (15 november 2019) by India at Indore. It was while watching this match that I became aware that it was exactly thirty and fifty years ago that two Indian batting legends made their test debuts.

These batting legends enhanced the stature of Indian batting. Seeing their batting, lots of batting talents came up in India. If today Indian batting is regarded as the strongest among all test playing nations then Gundappa Vishwanath and Sachin Tendulkar have played inspirational and important roles in that. It was appropriate that Indian batsmen “celebrated” the occasion by dishing out a memorable batting performance today- they hammered 406 runs in one day of test cricket. Last one hour saw more than one hundred runs being scored as T20 rate.

This occasion needs to be celebrated in the blog too, with a suitable song. While searching for a suitable song, I became aware that “Awwal Number”(1990) was a movie that centered around cricket.

“Awwal Number”(1990) was produced and directed by Dev Anand. This movie had Dev Anand, Aamir Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Neeta Puri, Ekta, Sudhir Pandey, Vikram Gokhale, Parikshat Sahni, Ram Mohan, Anjan Srivastava, Bharat Bhushan, Birbal, Sameer Khakkar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raj Kishore, Manmouji, Mac Mohan, Asha Sharma, Subbiraj, Ajit Vachchani, Aftab Shivdasani etc in it.

I was aware about the movie, but I was not aware that this movie was about cricket. It was not only about cricket, it even had a song about cricket. Just what the doctor ordered, as Ravi Shashstri, in his commentating avatar would have said.

Here is this song. It is sung by Udit Narayan, Amit Kumar and Bappi Lahiri. Amit Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

With this song, “Awwal Number”(1990) makes its debut in the blog.

Thanks to Prakashchandra, I have been able to watch the video of this song. The picturisation shows that this song is picturised on Dev Anand (lip syncing in Bappi Lahiri’s voice), Aditya Pancholi (Amit Kumar’s voice) and Aamir Khan (Udit Narayan’s voice).

I have been meaning to write a post on Majrooh Sultanpuri for some months now to commemorate the 100th birth Anniversary of a poet and film song writer par excellence.   But as usual one puts somethings on back burner and postpones things for some other time.

Last week I started the lyrics of this song from ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ (1988), incidentally on my iPad and saved the file in yahoo mail. But that file is not opening in the any of the computers, so this post again didn’t even start.  Today is 1st October, 2019.  A very nice post by Sadanad Kamath Sir has appeared in the blog, which is quiet inspiring and it gave fresh ammunition to my jaded thoughts to start this write up.

Majrooh Saab’s super success with all music director, big and small, prolific and selective, is not comparable to anyone else.   None of the major song writers in his era can boast a list of composers as comprehensive as him, and more importantly successful, famous and hit songs.  Be it Madan Mohan and SD Burman, Chitragupt and Laxmikant Pyarelal, or RD Burman, Roshan, Rajesh Roshan & Khaiyyam, least of all Naushad & OP Nayyar, C Ramchandra & Salil Chaudhary also. I don’t have to start listing the beautiful lyrical and profound songs, Majrooh Saab wrote with/for all these composers.

Among his contemporaries, Kaifi Azmi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Hasrat Jaipuri, Rajendra Krishnan, Shakeel Badayuni, Qamar Jalaalabadi, later on Indeevar, Anand Bakshi and Gulzar etc., most were aligned with a music director or a film production  group etc.  Music Directors also preferred to work with a single lyricist or a couple at a time.  Among the major composers only SD Burman seemed to have worked with all of the above listed lyricist, as well as Majrooh.

Sahir Ludhianvi was more prone to making tributes to other poets in his songs.  But Majrooh seems to have paid a ‘khiraj-e-aqeedat’ to his fellow progressive poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz in Madan Mohan’s “Chiraag’ song “Teri Aankhon Ke Siwa Duniya Mein Rakha Kya Hai”.  This line is part of the immortal Nazm by Faiz – “Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat Mere Mehboob Na Maang“.

In recent times, I have found that reading good work by others inspires me to write my own thoughts.  This is truer about poetry.  When I listen to some poets work, it given wings to my thoughts too.  I feel like writing something not necessarily on similar lines, better or superior, but some verse, some tributary sentences.

One can only wonder how such great creative minds must have felt when they heard some inspiring work of other greats and felt like expanding on the theme.  In this instance Majrooh Saab has gone on another tangent –

teri aankhon ke siwaa duniya mein rakkha kya hai
ye utthen subha chale, ye jhuken sham dhaley
mera jeena mera marna inhi palkon ke taley

As a poet with a heart that was Majrooh, why won’t he say –

dil me rakh lena ise haathon se ye chhoote na kahin
geet naazuk hai mera sheeshe se bhi toote na kahin

In my earlier tribute post for Majrooh Saab I have stated that just the lyrical poetry in “Rahen Na Rahen Hum, Mehka Karenge” in ‘Mamta’ (1966) is enough to make his place in the ‘Hall of Fame’ of Hindi film music.   Many colourful songs for Nasir Hussain’s films are written by Majrooh Saab for OP Nayyar and RD Burman.

The new age songs written by Majrooh for the film ‘Khaamoshi’ (1996) are among my favourites.  This time I have chosen a song from the 1988 film ‘Qayaamat Se Qayaamat Tak’ produced by Nasir Hussain and directed by his son Mansoor Khan for launching of Tahir Hussain’s son Aamir Khan. Incidentally dialogues, story and screenplay all are credit to Nasir Hussain.  The song starts with prelude music of clocks going “tick tock tick tock” in a departmental store, where Juhi Chawla has come to shop with her parents, Dalip Tahil and Beena.  She accidentally runs into Aamir Khan, who has promised his parent that he will not meet and talk to Juni Chawla for 6 month (?) or so. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla belong to two Rajput families who are at logger heads with each other over past broken alliances among the families due to which Dalip Tahil’s sister had committed suicide.

Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan met during a picnic trip to Mount Abu and fell in love without knowing that their families are having this rivalry.  Due to this, the love story is actually doomed to end in tragedy, but at the time of this song the lovebirds are unaware of this and are happily waiting for the wait period to get over. The singers are Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, and the music is by Anand-Milind. The songwriter is one and only Majrooh Sultanpuri.   If I remember correctly, this was the film which started the trend of abbreviating the name of film as QSQT.

A song of hope and happy endings. A song with birthday parties, picnic on cycles and dreamy dates and marking days in the calendar till happy days are here again.

The Poet i.e. Majrooh further says:

The reference to peepal tree in the song is taking me to another memory of a long time ago.  The movie ‘Naseem’ seen a long time ago on TV.   I have looked up the info on this film on imdb (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241753/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1).

It’s a movie alternately named ‘The Morning Breeze’.   Kaifi Azmi played the grandfather of the central pratogoist Naseem in the film and there is a dialogue uttered by him , which goes :  “Hamaare ghar ke aangan mein ek bahut puraana peepal ka ped thha.” 

This in turn is reminds of my own paternal grandfather, who was a staunch Gandhian and a Satyagrahi.  One of the lakhs of foot soldiers whose names do not appear in the list of those who fought for the independence of India.  He was participant in the Swadeshi movement and the Quit India Movement, in the tiny village in Belgaum District.  It is said the police came to the village looking for him, but his mother hid him in the sacks of food grains and thus he escaped arrest.  His name is ‘Meeran Saheb’ in the traditional way, people were named in that by gone era.  He was an avid reader of newspapers and lived in his own world, if he could help it.  Lived an idealistic and minimalistic life in the era of idealism with resources, available only to the extent of one’s needs for survival.  Wore only white Khadi Kurta-eezar with Gandhi topi, till the day he died.   It was his daily attire, be it someone’s wedding or Eid or whatever celebration or occasion.  New  clothes a must for Eid, normally he made do with 2-3 sets of clothes.  His life’s priorities were simple, news on radio and newspapers of Urdu, Marathi and Kannada.  My ‘Dada’ was not the only one to wear khadi as an uniform, there were others, his peers mostly who wore only white Khadi .

Another thing, I am more like my grandfather than anybody else.  It has been a decade or two, since anyone has called me “Meeran Saheb”, (the whole family and relatives on my mothers side used to call me that) but the memory is more pleasant now than it felt at that time 🙂 .

We are living in the times which are also good in some ways and bad in some ways.  There has never been a utopian era.  It exists in dreams and books of the visionaries.   There may be rare examples of near perfect society with peace, justice and prosperity existing in recorded history.  So we make the best of what we have and survive with our self-respect intact, the head held high and the values of humanity held close to the heart.   And what of hope?  Hope is always there and dreams are never in short supply.  One needs to keep faith and prayer on the lips for the Providence, who provides for one and all.

Ah…… here is the concept of providence.  Providence is the source of all that the creation needs and gets.  I did say in the comments of a post “Karta Hai Ek Raavi Ye Dilsooz e Bayaan“,  that I will try and explain the concept of ‘Ni’amat’ and ‘Barakah’.

Niamat for me is the belief system of Islam, i.e. Imaan, higher level of Imaan is Taqwa.  It is the belief in Allah (SWT – Subhanahu Wa Ta-A’la meaning All Praises For Him), his Prophets (PBUT – Peace Be Upon Them), his revelations and the day of Judgement i.e. Aakhirah.  It is a niamat that we have the ability to see, to hear and to speak.  The ability to breath and live.  The elements of nature like air,  water  and food which are life’s substance.  ‘Niamat‘ is also the word of Allah – his revelations in the form of aayats of the Quraan), sent down as guidance and warning.   Also that Allah (SWT) has promised to preserve his revelations i.e. the Quraan for mankind till the end of time.

Barakah‘ or ‘Barkat’ is that Allah (SWT) keeps providing for us these life substances, provides for all the universe, even for the smallest / minutest life forms to the giant creatures.  He keeps forgiving us and accepting our prayers. Listens to them and grants our wishes whatever is best for us.  For he knows what is best for us, we do not know.  He is the one who gave us the wisdom to be ‘saabir‘ (Patient) and ‘shaakir’ (thankful).  ‘Barakah‘ is again that the Almighty has given us pious parents and spouse and granted us children, with joy and contentment in life.  It is simple that if we learn to be ‘saabir and shaakir’ we will be content with our lot and life will be full of joy.   ‘Barkah’ is also increase of health, wealth and happiness.   It’s a blessing from the Almighty that we have the ability to understand all this and life’s philosophy. It is also the ability to give and to share.  The maturity to understand and accept that whatever worldly wealth, name, fame we have is given by the Almighty Allah and it is not ours, but we are the custodians.  He gives it in our custody so that we share the bountiful of worldly goods, this includes knowledge, among fellow beings.  It’s like a distribution chain.

Charity, I believe is nothing but the justification of our being blessed with health and wealth, in fact all ‘niamat‘ and ‘barakat‘.  Some are blessed more and others are blessed less (with health, wealth etc. in material terms). For both the types of people the blessings bestowed by God Almighty are a test, no less.  How they treat these blessings, how they react, and how they relate all this to the Almighty.  How thankful and grateful they are for these blessings.

From him, Allah (swt)  we came and to him we shall return.  We take with us only our deeds.  Here we come to good deeds and bad deeds.  What is to be remembered here again our deeds are what we do, how we treat our fellow beings in the world and how we behave in the world and what we cause as a result of our conduct, speech and behavior and deeds and how charitable or otherwise, we are. Essentially how much caring and sharing, we exercise in our life amount to our deeds here.  Mostly we might see there is the system of use and abuse going on around us.  We are part of the same system and involved in the same type of deeds.  But there is a thread of light all around us which shows the path of good, right and peace and justice. If we go forward looking for good than we will find  only goodness.

It’s a ‘Niamat‘ and ‘Barakah‘ that we have a belief in the ‘Day of Judgment’ too, all things considered.  Day of Judgement is when all our good deeds and bad deeds will be considered, and Allah (SWT) will grant us ‘Heaven / Paradise’ or  “Hell Fire”.  If humanity has this belief that we are answerable for all our deeds to a superior power, than this will stop it from committing all crimes and bad deeds, from smallest of bad deeds, like hurting someone with bad words, even.

See !  He is giving us, guidance, showing us the way of a pious, clean, spiritual and just life,  promising to preserve this book for us till the end of time, promising us rewards for the good deeds that we are able to amass, because of his naimat and barakah, in the hereafter.    So , which of the blessings, gifts and favours  given by our Lord and Master, are we going to deny ?

May Allah (SWT) grant us with the Baraakah for believing in the essential goodness of human nature.

This song from “Lagaan’ is a special one.  The song’s title is ‘Mitwa’, and every time I am looking for a celebratory song, this keeps coming to memory.  It is all about hope and spirit to win and overcome the difficulties in life, with strength and aplomb.  Javed Akhtar is the lyricist and AR Rehman is composer.  It is a group song which became a speciality of AR Rehman. The singing voices are Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh and Srinivas.  This is one of my favourite songs by Udit Narayan, for the rally that he sang in the mukhdaa. There should be a category of ‘mitwaa‘ songs too, as there are many classic songs in the Golden era.  I have one more ‘mitwa‘ song in my sights for writing a post.  If I can find one more inspiring song in the category, will try to make a trilogy of posts on ‘Mitwaa”.

Meanwhile, the holy month of ‘Ramadhan’ has ended, with ‘Eid-ul-fitr’ also come and gone, I take this opportunity to wish everyone  Eid Mubarak, belatedly.  May Allah (SWT) grant your wishes and answer your prayers.

My Railway related reminiscences- 2

Couple of days back, I discussed a song of 1991, with my reminiscences of Hyderabad/ Secunderabad, where I was based at that time. Those were the early days of my career and that was my first posting.

That post gave me an idea that I should discuss my experiences of my stays in various places of India during my career. When I began to think about my experiences of those days, many interesting memories came to the fore. So I thought that I should discuss those memories (alongwith movies that I saw at those places) in a series form. I decided to name this series “my reminisces in Railways”. The article accompanyng the 1991 song thus began the fist part of the series.

Secunderabad was my fist posting, but that was preceded by period of probation which was during late 1980s and early 1990s. Those were the days when we would visit various places in Indian Railways located all around the country and undergo “training”. I describe it as “training” and not training because very few people actually trained at these places. It was more like site seeing and getting a first hand experience of how to manage to travel in trains, often without confirmed reservations and often without any confirmed accomodations at the places of our “training.” Those experiences were the real learning experiences for us.

People would form small groups of a few probationers and would travel and “train” together. My group used to be the smallest possible, viz two of us. 🙂

Most of these trainings were of one or two weeks. At the end of the “training”, we would be interviewed by the head of that organisation and then we would get a certificate that we had successfully completed the training. We used to dread the interview and would hope that the head would spare us and give us the certificate without actually interviwing others.

One of these training programmes took us to New Katni junction. We were supposed to undergo training in Diesel shed there. After the end of two weeks, the most dreaded occasion, viz interview with the head of the diesel shed, arrived. The head, one Mr Marcus, a very strict disciplinarian, started to grill the two of us on what we had learnt about diesel locomotives. Both of us were largely clueless on the subject and so I hoped that interviewer would vent his frustration equally on the two of us. My groupmate, Suresh had managed to memorise a few buzz words of Diesel locomotives and I was not familiar with even those words. So, I was singled out by Mr Marcus and he gave me a mouthfull. Learn from Mr Suresh, he at least knows a few terms about Diesel locomotives, I was told.

Suitably chastened, I came out and resolved that I would actually take the training seriously in future. But it was a resolution that I could never keep. 🙂

But that experience gave me an important life and management lesson. When a tiger appears before a herd of deer, the deers need not outrun the tiger. They only need to ensure that they outrun the slowest deer among them. 🙂 The tiger would catch the slowest of the deers and the other deers would escape.

While most trainings were for small durations and they were for probationers in small groups, there were some centralised trainings in large groups and of longer durations in designated locations.

For example, all probationers of all services had to mandatorily undergo two trainings. The first was called “Foundation”” course and it was followed by “Induction” course. These courses would be of one month duration and they would take place at Railway Staff College, Vadodara.

The need for centralised training of Railway officers was first felt in 1920s in pre independence era and a “Railway Staff College” was established in Dehradun in 1930. Within two years, some senior Railway Man decided that training of Railway Officers was a luxury that Railways could ill afford and so that “Railway Staff College” at Dehradun was closed down. Its premises were sold to Army. The present day Indian Military Academy at Dehradun is located where the original “Railway Staff College” stood from 1930 to 1932.

Two decades later, it was once again realised that training of Railway officers was not a luxury but a necessity so Railway Staff College was again established. This time it was set up at Vadodara. Railways took Pratap Vilas Palace of Vadodara on lease in 1949. Subsequently Railways bought this premise outright in 1964.

The magnificent Pratap Villa Palace was designed by Charles Frederick Stevens in 1914. Readers may recall that Bombay VT was built by Frederick Williams Stevens in 1887, who was the father of Charles Frederick Stevens. I find it interesting that Charles Frederick Stevens, though an Englishman was named in Marathi-Gujrati manner, viz. Name of the person, followed by father name, followed by Surname. 🙂

The first principal of Railway Staff College, Vadodara was Mr P C Bahl, from 1952 to 1956. His son Lt Commander Rajnish Bahl of Indian navy married film actress Nutan.

It was in this Railway Staff College that I underwent my Foundation Course. There were around 40 probationers in the batch. They were accomodated in hostel rooms, two probationers in each room.

I had decided that I would take Foundation course seriously, and as a part of my seriousness, I chose a room partner who himself was a serious student. No, not the abovementioned Suresh, but another person named Rahul.

Vadodara was (it still is) a nice place. Classes were held in day time for five days a week. Saturday and Sunday were free.

We would typically go out to watch night show of movies in Vadodara after dinner time. It was on one such night that Rahul suggested that we should go watch a new movie called “Dil”(1990). This movie had two newcomers in lead roles. The hero was one Aamir Khan, who had made a successful debut with “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” (1988). The leading lady was Madhuri Dixit, who had become an all India rage after the song “ek do teen” in “Tezaab” (1988).

We went for the night show of “Dil”(1990). We left our hostel at 9 PM and we were worried that we would be late for the show. But when we arrived there, we found that we were well in time. The previous show was still playing. We kept waiting and waiting. The earlier show ended after 10 PM. Our night show began at 10-30 PM, which is too late for a night show to start.

It was well past 1 AM when the show finally ended. In my younger days, I would remain wide awake and aware and would not miss any moment of the movie, not even newsreels and ads. But those days were in the past. I was feeling sleepy throughout the movie. So I missed much of the story and so I was not aware what was going on in the movie.

This movie “Dil” (1990) is not yet covered in the blog. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Udit Narayan and Anuradha Paudwal. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anand Milind.

The song is picturised on the lead pair of Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit, both looking so young and fresh faced vis a vis today. But then this movie had come three decades ago !

The song from the movie under discussion is titled “mujhe neend na aaye” , but it was a case of “mujhe neend hi neend aaye” for me in the movie hall in that show. 🙂
