Hullo Atuldom

The screen turns to a dark, cloudy sky. There is thunder and lightning. A shimmering disk appears against this backdrop, accompanied by music that has certain magical quality about it. As the background score gently works its way to a crescendo, finishing with a flourish of cymbals, a Greek column-like pedestal, bearing the ‘NH Films’ insignia appears against a smoke-filled screen. Almost instantly a booming voice recites a couplet, with a soft but distinct drum roll accompanying the oration. The couplet goes:

Kya ishq ne samjha hai, kya husn ne jaana hai
Hum khaaq-nasheenon ki thokar mein zamaana hai

The voiceover ends with an emphatic drumbeat. The credits follow led by the opening credit, NASIR HUSAIN FILMS Presents…..

This is from the introductory page of the book “Music Masti Modernity- The cinema of NASIR HUSAIN” by Akshay Manwani – a gift that my daughter gave me last year for Mother’s Day. From the book I learnt that Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was Nasir Husain’s mother’s maternal uncle. He (Nasir Husain) was the fourth of five children with Tahir Husain being his younger brother. Actors Tariq (of kya hua tera waada) and Aamir Khan are his nephews where Tariq is his older brother – Anees’s son and Aamir is Tahir Husain’s son. His grandson Imran Khan (daughter Nuzhat’s son) is an actor. A very interesting trivia that I learnt from the book is that Nasir Sa’ab’s wife – Ayesha Khan- was born Margaret Francina Lewis, and she was an assistant choreographer in films.Subodh Mukherjee used his assistant Nasir and the choreographer’s assistant whenever he setup shots and almost played cupid in their life.

We (the regular followers of this blog) know that Nasir Husain began his life in the film industry as a writer at Filmistan when the screenwriter Aghajani Kashmeri fell ill and Nasir Sa’ab was asked to complete the unfinished dialogues for “Chandni Raat” (1949); the book says he was not credited for this. We also know that he went on to produce and direct films and gave audiences breezy musical romantic entertainers right till the 1980s when he directed “Zabardast” (1985) which was produced by Mushir-Riaz which had Rati Agnihotri- Jaya Prada- Tanuja- Geeta Kak- Sunny Deol- Rajiv kapoor- Sanjeev Kumar- Amrish Puri and others in the cast.

1988 saw Nasir Sa’ab’s son Mansoor Khan turn director with “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” which was produced by Nasir Husain Films, and the story-screenplay and dialogues were by Nasir Husain. The next two films directed by Mansoor Khan- “Jo Jeeta Wahi Sikandar” {JJWS (1992)} and “Akele Hum Akele Tum” (1995) also had dialogues by Nasir Husain. That means career began and ended Nasir Sa’ab with being a writer. I think he hung up his boots post this.

“Yaadon Ki Baraat” (1973) made by Nasir Husain Films had a long song which changes beat/ tempo etc. with ‘Dil mil gaye toh um khil gaye’- which is almost like a second song with a life of its own. The song closes with Tariq, Zeenat Aman, Vijay Arora and the whole audience breaking into ‘Dum Maro Dum’ and we get the third song. Nasir Husain repeated this kind of song picturisation in ‘Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin’ and ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai’. Mansoor Khan followed his father’s formula of two-three songs in one with ‘Jawaan ho yaaro yeh tumko hua kya’; ‘deewane hum pyar ke, parwaane hum pyar ke’ and ‘Naam hai mera Fonseca” in “JJWS”. Today we shall see one of the three.

We can see Aamir Khan, Ayesha Julka, Pooja Bedi, Deepak Tijori, Mamik Singh, Kiran Jhaveri, Deven Bhojani etc in this stage song which is sung by Udit Narayan and Vijeyta Pandit. It is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Jatin-Lalit.

Incidentally 13th March was Nasir Husain’s death anniversary and 14th March is Aamir Khan’s birthday. So here is a song connecting the Uncle and Nephew.

Udit Narayan + Vijeyta Pandit

Lyrics

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara aa
jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
ye maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano
ho dildaaron

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

mehnat se miley jo
uspe guzaar
dooje ke maal ko
thhokar se maar
aayegi idhar bhi
ek din bahaar
hoga yeh zamaana
ham pe nisaar

yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

isko chhoona nahin
hey raam raam
ye toh hai paap ki
gathhri tamaam
kab yeh rut badal jaaye
kisko khabar
lag jaaye hamein bhi
sone ke par

phir aise udenge
ham sab yaar

gulon se ladegi motar car
haseena hogi gale ka haar
arre yaaron mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

jawaan ho yaaron
yeh tumko hua kya
aji hamko dekho zara
yeh maana abhi hain khaali haath
na honge sada yahi din raat
kabhi toh banegi apni baat
arre yaaron
mere pyaaron
meri maano ho dildaaron

Hullo Atuldom

A very Happy Republic Day to every Indian on this earth. It is 73 years since The Indian Constitution came into effect replacing the Government of India Act and turning the nation into a newly formed Republic.

Various videos have started doing rounds on the social media over the last few days, and the one that is shared the most is this one. This video has Cyrus Broacha, the theatre and television personality who excels in tongue-in-cheek satire, quiz a few youngsters about what they think of the national holidays- 15th August and 26sup>th January. I don’t know if I should feel sad about the replies that the respondents gave or feel ashamed of how little information we have passed on to the generation that followed ours – we being the generation that followed those who had worked towards independence for India and making it a Sovereign Democratic Republic. (I myself didn’t know answers to few of the questions).

Here I am reminded of this post by Peevesie where she has expressed her thoughts on National pride, patriotism, and the behaviour of the citizens when such national days approach. I am sure that the thoughts in there would open no-holds and no-age barred debates, and evoke sentimental responses all around.

I don’t want to continue the lament so I just came back to the spirit of this blog which is music.

Over the last few years we have had a few films which were based on Real achievements of this vast country of ours. Atulji has written some highly educative and informative posts for songs from these movies (one reading of these posts is not enough to understand the spirit behind these National achievements).

The posts are almost like an insiders’ view, as he works for one of the largest employers of the country, the Indian Railways which is instrumental in binding the country into one whole unit. The other large employer being the Armed Forces. These two organisations of the country work relentlessly 24/7 and salute to them.
These are the posts Shubh din aayo; dil mein Mars hai which speak of modern India’s achievements that should make very Indian proud (I don’t know if every Indian knows everything about India.)

Before beginning this post, I just went over the songs posted in the blog on the very first Republic day (for the blog) and found these

Song Posted at
Ye desh hai veer jawaanon ka (posted at 7.46 a.m.)
Mere desh ki dharti sona ugle (posted at 7.54 a.m.)
Dulhan chali o pahan chali (posted at 7.59 a.m.)
Hai pree jahaan ki reet sada (posted at 8.15 a.m.)
Abke baras (posted at 8.34 a.m.)
Chhodo kal ki baaten (posted at 8.47 a.m.)

As can be seen from above, there were six patriotic songs on that date, all posted well before 9 a.m. I am sure post this activity Atulji would have left for the official flag unfurling program at his work place.

Here I would like to mention that Flag Hoisting takes place on Independence day and Flag Unfurling for Republic Day. Also the main celebrations for the country happens in New Delhi -the national capital- where the Prime Minister hoists the National flag and addresses the nation on Independence day from the ramparts of the Red fort and The President unfurls the flag on Rajpath – the venue of the Republic Day parade. The President, being the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, presides over the Republic Day parade. The Republic Day celebrations begin with the Prime Minister paying homage (on behalf of a thankful nation) to the unknown soldiers, who laid down their lives for the country, at the memorial at India Gate. There is going to be a slight departure this year, as the Amar Jawan Jyoti -the eternal flame at the memorial – which was constructed after the 1971 Indo- Pak war and inaugurated on 26th January 1972 has been merged with the newer one at the National War Memorial on 21st January 2022.

Coming back to the songs that were posted on 26th January 2009, of the six songs posted one was from a Black and White movie (at the time of its release) “Naya Daur” having Ajit and Dilip Kumar in the song. The last song posted that day was from “Hum Hindustani” which had Sunil Dutt and we can also see some military and para-military force parades in the song. The other four songs were from Manoj Kumar starrers, each song showcasing a different aspect of patriotism. All the posts were short, crisp posts. (I must say that Atulji has become more vocal as the blog grew.)

These are my last two contributions to the blog on the occasion of Indian Republic day.

Song Date of posting
Mera mulk mera desh mera ye watan 26 January 2021
Vande Maatram 26 January 2020

Today we are having a song from Mukul S. Anand’s unfinished, unreleased 1997 movie “Dus”. The film began production in May 1997 and 40% shooting was completed by August. Songs from the movie were already released for public viewing on various music channels of satellite television. Unfortunately Mukul Anand (the director), died during the movie’s shoot on location in Utah, and the movie was shelved. The co-producer Nitin Manmohan released another movie with the same title but unrelated subject in 2005. Mukul Anand’s ‘Dus’ had a cast of Sanjay Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Salman Khan, Shilpa Shetty, Raveena Tandon etc. It had music by Shankar- Ehsaan- Loy and Sandeep Chowta. Lyrics were by Sameer and Deepak Choudhary.

Today’s song is in the voices of Udit Narayan, Shankar Mahadevan, Mahalakshmi Iyer, Dominique Cerejo and lyrics are by Sameer. It had been filmed as a stage song and tells the world that India will be “sabse aage” in the years to come. That means one of the leading nations of the world. And we can see there is a lot of good happening in the country and hope to see positive changes in the years to come.

This was the promotional video that was up on Mukul Anand’s official website.
When I see such songs I feel all is not lost and there is still some patriotic fervour among the country’s youth and they express it in their own way.
Happy Republic day once again.

Hullo Atuldom

Time for a yearly roundup!!!! 2021 coming to a close. 2022 just a sunrise away. Hope we have different experiences in 2022, experiences that make us glad and bring a smile to our lips which stays the whole year.

I am sure Atulji or Sudhirji or one of the other blog-contributors, who have the patience to go through the statistics etc., will give us a table of how many new movies debuted on the blog in 2021, and other related info about which date saw how many posts etc. But the best that happened this year, IMO, is the series that Atulji undertook to enlist all the movies, music directors etc that Lata Mangeshkar was associated with in her looonnngg career.

On the way out of 2021 here is a song from the 1993 release “Shatranj”. A movie that I saw at the time of its release on cable TV, before the Satellite TV Tsunami hit us. It was produced by Arun S. Thakur, directed by Aziz Sejawal, had music by Anand Milind, and Sameer was the lyricist. S P Balasubramaniam, Abhijeet, Udit Narayan, Jolly Mukherjee, Kumar Sanu, Sudesh Bhonsle, Jayshree (popular as Bombay Jayshri in classical music circles), Poornima, Sadhana Sargam (i.e. all the good singers of the 90s) were used in the movie.

Kadar Khan was the dialogue writer of the movie which begins like “Chalti ka Naam Gaadi” (CKNG) which means we have three brothers -bachelors- who are reared by the eldest brother Dharamraj (Kadar Khan), the other two brothers being Dino and Dinky (Jackie and Mithun). The eldest brother has a problem with the female gender of the populace (like Ashok Kumar in CKNG), the other two don’t have any such issues and Renu & Radha (Divya Bharaati and Juhi Chawla) are their girl friends. Then there is a female called Rosie (Jamuna who appeared in a few films in the 80s and 90s, not much is known about her) who is shown to like the elder brother Dharamraj since childhood (Sarfaraz Khan, Kadar Khan’s own son played the younger Dharamraj). The reason for Dharamraj’s problem with females is shown as his step-mother who was nasty to him and his brothers as children.

The story has the necessary villain in the character of Prajapati (Kiran Kumar) the manager to the brothers’ father’s (Vikas Anand) business and also his killer. He is cheating the brothers’s step-mother and step-brother (Shakti Kapoor) and using their business as a front for his illegal activities (what else). The brothers have some misunderstandings with Dharamraj when Renu & Radha enter their lives, which get resolved; then the hard-feelings towards the step-family also is sorted out and the cause of all the problems in their lives (Prajapati) is brought to his logical end. And then “The End”.

Oh I forgot to mention a few more tributes that the movie paid to CKNG. CKNG had ‘Mohan Garage’ here the brothers have ‘Dharam Garage’. There was a ‘car’ in CKNG even this movie had a ‘car’ important to the story. CKNG begins with a song on the pet car, this one too begins with a song on the car. Additionally the brothers have a pet Monkey/ Chimpanzee. So let us have the movie debuting on the blog with the film-opening song that shows us the bonding between the brothers. This song is in the voices of SPB, Abhijeet and Udit Narayan.

There used to be a show called ‘Superhit Muqabla’ on Doordarshan Metro of those years (28 years back) which was on the lines of the legendary Binaca Geetmala. The show used to retire songs from the list of popular songs, which were complied based on vinyl records and cassette sales & and viewership of the show as such, after a 25 week run to make place for newer songs, very much like Binaca Geetmala. And songs of “Shatranj” (1993) were on this show for many weeks.

With this song we also say thank you to the entertainer Kadar Khan who left us today, in 2018, in Canada, where he was staying with his sons following his retirement from Bollywood. His last release was ‘Hogaya Dimaagh ka Dahi” in 2015 October (after a gap of seven years when ‘Mehbooba’ and ‘Deshdrohi’ released). He was a recipient of three Filmfare awards viz:

Best Dialogue for “Meri Awaz Suno” in 1982.

Best Comedian for “Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri” in 1991.

Best Dialogue (again) for “Angaar” in 1993.

He was conferred the Padma Shri, posthumously in 2019 by the Government of India.

He was 81 when he passed away.

Hullo Atuldom

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (release date 30th July 2004) is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by David Dhawan. It has a cast headed by Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amrish Puri, Kadar Khan, with Shashikala, Upasana Singh, Supriya Karnik, Satish Shah, Rajpal Yadav, etc for support. A few well-known faces make cameo appearances as themselves. The songs of the movie are written by Arun Bhairav, Jalees Sherwani (never heard these two names) and Sameer. Sajid- Wajid and Anu Malik are the music composers with Anu Malik giving music for one song and Sajid-Wajid having tuned the rest (there were 8 songs with two songs being multi-version songs).

The movie is the story of two friends Sameer and Sunny who meet in Goa after a gap of many years and only one of them recognizes the other as the ‘bachpan ka yaar‘. Actually Sunny seeks out Sameer with the help of Sameer’s grandmother (Shashikala) and tracks him down in Goa. Sunny gets Sameer to believe that he is after the girl, Rani Singh whom he is trying to woo. That makes it two hurdles for Sameer to overcome in his love-life; the other being Rani’s father (Amrish Puri). The movie has some fun moments between Sameer and Rani’s parents as also the landlord (Kadar Khan) of Sameer and Sunny. After a lot of madcap happenings Sameer comes to know that Sunny is actually Arun Khanna- his bachpan ka yaar – and that his aim in seeking out Sameer was just to reunite with him.

On the way to ‘THE END’ there is a chase through a crowded stadium (filmed at Bangalore’s stadium) after Sameer is taunted by Sunny about Sameer’s anger-management issues. Sameer snatches the microphone from the Chief Guest at the cricketing event, a friendly match between India and Pakistan, much to the amusement of the commentators and the players. He makes a public apology to Rani and her parents and proposes to her in front of the spectators.

This movie has Salman Khan playing Sameer, Akhsay Kumar playing Sunny alias Arun Khanna and Priyanka Chopra playing Rani Singh. Rajpal Yadav plays a madcap astrologer who keeps giving Sameer directions on how to woo Rani which always flop.

There have been a few posts on the blog, since 24th when the movie based on the 1983 world cup had its theatrical release. That movie is on my wish-list, but all those posts and references to cricketers making appearances, as themselves, on the silver screen, reminded me of this movie. Of course we have had Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil playing romantic characters on-screen and Syed Kirmani playing a negative character too, but we are looking at films that have cricketers playing themselves.

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ has Navjot Singh Sidhu play a commentator (he had turned a commentator mouthing Sidhuisms by then) and Sajid Khan (the comedian and film maker) sharing the commentary box. Then we have Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, and Harbhajan Singh looking at the goings-on, on the pitch, from the pavilion. And (finally) we have Kapil Dev as the chief guest from whom Sameer snatches the microphone. Kapil Paaji also puts in his two-bit to help Sameer’s case with Rani and her father and put an end to the interruption that the drama was causing to the start of the game.

We are having this film making its debut on the blog to wish Salman Khan on his 56th birthday. Here is wishing him health and happiness and a long innings entertaining us Hindi Film Followers. This romantic song is composed by Sajid-Wajid and written by Arun Bhairav. It is sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan.

mere chaand ko dekh ke
chaand bhi sharma gaya
mujhe sharam si aaye

arey aa baahon mein chook naa jaayen
aise mauke se
tujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo

haaye
mehka mehka ye samaa
kehne laga aa pyaar kar
mere sohne yaar tu
dilbar se iqraar kar
oo
tere pyaar ki khushboo
meri saanson mein sama gai
le sajna sab chhod main tere
peechhe peechhe aa gai
tujhe pyaar ho gaya
haaye tauba
iqraar ho gaya
haaye tauba
arey
ab to roke naa rukun main
kisi ke roke se
mujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

laal dupatta
udd gaya re bairi hawa ke jhonke se
hoye
laal dupatta
udd gaya re tera hawa ke jhonke se
tujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

Hullo Atuldom

We are into the last month of 2021. This is my first post for the month, and we have a few super-actors celebrating their birthdays this month. Also, there are a few actors, who are no longer amidst us, whose birth anniversaries are in December. Here is hoping that I get the inspiration to write for each of those dates.

But today’s birthday is not of any well known film star. It is our very own Ben Katie’s birthday. We wish her a very Happy and Musical day. May we see more of her on the blog-space.

This post sees the 2002 released, Rahul Dholakia directed, Neeraj Vora written (dialogues), Kishore Dadlaney- Lal Dadlaney produced romantic-comedy “Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar” making its debut on the blog. It had songs written by Sameer which were tuned by Jatin-Lalit.

It had a cast headed by Paresh Rawal who played an egoistic, over possessive father to two lovely daughters. There is a lot of Mayhem when he discovers that one of his daughters (Kim Sharma, a doctor in the film) declares that she is in love with a man who is not a “Patel”. Further investigation by the father reveals that the prospective son-in-law (Jimmy Shergill) is neither a property-owner nor a professional. As if that was not enough to ruffle the fuming father’s feathers it turns out that the person is a mixed-blood Indian viz. part-Punjabi, part- South Indian (“Madrasi” as people who are unaware of the different states in south of India would like to say). This leads to a lot of hot-weather between Jimmy and Paresh Rawal which is definitely entertaining and I must say that it didn’t look ‘gross’.

I remember (vaguely) that there is a scene in the movie where Patel (Paresh Rawal) is shown to be organizing the catering for his other daughter’s (Namrata- played by Toral Mehta) wedding. That scene helps establish the kind of calculative mindset of ‘Roger Patel’ possesses. By the way, ‘Roger Patel’ is the Americanized version of Ranchod Rai Patel who likes to call himself ‘The Roger Patel’.

Neena Kulkarni, Ranjeet, Johnny Lever were also part of the cast. Today’s song shows us Neena Kulkarni- the loving mother- leading a set that approves of the match between Kim and Jimmy. The lively song has Gujarati and Punjabi words and even the tune has flavour of both the states. We can see Paresh Rawal is unmoved (he is one versatile actor, isn’t he? 🙂

This song shows us what potential Jimmy Shergill had and could have been a success in commercial movies too considering the handsome looks and sense of rhythm as far as dance is concerned. He was very good in displaying his emotions too as could be seen in the characters he played in movies like the Gulzar directed “Maachis” (1996), Yash Chopra’s “Mohabbatein” (2000) and some more from the Yash Raj stable.

Recently I had seen him in movies like “Happy Bhag Jayegi” (2016) and its sequel “Happy Phirr Bhag Jaayegi” (2018) both of which showcased his comic timing. I must admit that I liked what little I have seen of him in movies.

Incidentally, 3rd December happens to be his 51st birthday -here is wishing him lots of luck and good movies that allow him to show his full talent. By the way, he belongs to a family of immense talent. His paternal great aunt was the famous Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.

This song is in the vocals of Udit Narayan and Shraddha Pandit (some sites have mentioned that Poornima is the female playback, need confirmation).

Let us also wish Udit Narayan (belated, he turned a year older on 1st December). He has been in the music industry since 1980. He has had opportunity to sing with the legends Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar. Success came his way after a long struggle, in 1988 to be exact, when ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ from ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ ruled the air-waves and popularity charts.

He began his singing on Radio Nepal with Maithili and Nepali songs. He moved to Mumbai in the 80s and his debut was in the 1980 release ‘Unees Bees’ which had Rajesh Roshan wielding the baton, this was the song where he got to sing with Mohd Rafi. He has sung for even Dev Anand in ‘Swami Dada’. He is the recipient of 4 National Awards, 5 Filmfare Awards, and Padma Shri.

I am sure the followers of the blog will understand why I chose this song to go with this post. 🙂

Once again wishing our Ben Katie – naamkaran for Khyatiji done by our Sudhirji- a Very Happy Birthday.

Hullo Atuldom

10th October is the birth date of the ageless Bollywood Diva Bhanurekha Ganesan.

I don’t remember which was my first post on the blog on her birthday, but over the last few years I have been trying to write out a song and present her with an actor who was not one of her regular heroes; meaning someone except Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Mehra etc. Today’s song is also one such song.

This song is from the 2000 release “Bulandi” which was directed by T. Rama Rao. It had a cast of Rajnikanth (special appearance), Anil Kapoor, Harish (from South Indian films), and Rekha, Raveena Tandon, Aruna Irani along with Shakti Kapoor, Ranjeet, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Paresh Rawal, Sadashiv Amrapurkar in supporting cast. Songs of the movie were penned by Anand Bakshi and tuned by Viju Shah. The playback singers used were Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Anuradha Paudwal, Jaspinder Narula, Sukhwinder Singh, Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik -in short all the popular singers of the 90s.

The movie was the tale of a family of Zamindars which is headed by Rajnikanth who has a sister -Aruna Irani and three sons Anil Kapoor (double role plays two brothers) and Harish Kumar. Rekha plays the zamindar’s elder daughter-in-law who is the bhabhi-maa to her devars. And here I would like to mention that the two Anil Kapoors are not twins. Today’s song happens at the girl’s family meeting the boy’s family ritual and the older Anil Kapoor is the groom-to be. Aruna Irani the would-be atyaa (paternal aunt) starts the song as cue to the coy Bride-to-be who then begins singing and also fantasizing about her hubsand married life etc
There have been many instances when big a star/ actor accepts a role in a film because the main actor/ character is being enacted by a senior star/actor of whom the junior is a fan. Like for example, Amitabh Bachchan played Dilip Kumar’s son in Ramesh Sippy’s “Shakti”. Similarly Rekha played miniscule role in one of Dev Anand’s final movie, “Censor” and also one of Manoj Kumar’s last directorial.

Anil Kapoor did a second rung character in this film as he was sharing screen space with a senior (workwise)-Rekha. And the dance that accompanies sees Rekha and Anil Kapoor matching each other decently well. It is only recently I found out that there is just two year age gap between these two actors but one began working in 1966 (age 12) when the other might have been in school and not even given a thought to what career to pursue. That must be one of the reason why the viewer may feel that Anil Kapoor was acting with a much senior actress, she was a senior only because she was already in the entertainment business for 14 years before Anil made his debut.

The singers for this song are Kavitha Krishnamurthy and Udit Narayan.

Happy birthday to Rekha. May we keep seeing her on the silver screen.

It can be seen from the table of 2000 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 5 songs in 2 movies released in 2000.

One song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 2000 has been covered in the blog. That song was from one of the two movies of 2000 where she got to sing songs. With that song, all the Lata songs of that one movie (viz one song) has been covered. That leaves us with one movie of 2000 that offers us Lata Mangeshkar sons for discusussion.

This movie is “Mohabbatein”(2000). This movie was produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Aditya Chopra for Yashraj Films, Mumbai. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty,Jimmy Shergill, Priti Jhangiani, Jugal Hansraj, Kim Sharma, Archana Puran Singh, Anupam Kher, Raman Lamba, Ram Mohan, Helen, Saurabh Shukla, Amrish Puri, Shefali Shah, Prazan Dastur, Rushad Rana, Mehul Nisar, Geri Andrade,Navneet nishan, Priya Gill ,Manjit Kular,Harpal Singh Pali, Sitaram,Meghna Patel, Palash Dutta etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. Four songs from the movie had the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in them.

Here is a song from “Mohabbatein”(2000). This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Udit Narayan. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jatin Lalit.

The song is picturised on Aishwarya Rai and Shahrukh Khan. The song has a second part too that gets played towards the end of the song, where others, including Amitabh Bachchan is also visible.

So this song can be considered as a two part song.

Lyrics of this song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

With this song, “Mohabbatein”(2000) makes its debut in the blog.

Blog Day :

Today 28th September, we remember Sardar Bhagat Singh (28th September 1907 – 23rd March 1931), on his 114th birth anniversary.

We on the blog pay our tributes to him by posting a song from the movies made on his life.

I have mentioned in my earlier posts that the year 2002 was a special year from the point of view of ‘movies made on Bhagat Singh’. That year three movies were released on the life of Bhagat Singh.

23rd March 1931 Shaheed

The Legend of Bhagat Singh

Shaheed-E-Azam

We have already introduced the movies ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ and ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ on the blog.
“23rd March 1931 Shaheed” and “The Legend of Bhagat Singh” were released on the same date, and the third movie “Shaheed-E-Azam” was delayed and was released later in the same year i.e.,2002.

All the movies covered the story of Bhagat Singh from his birth to death, including important incidences of Bhagat Singh’s life. All these were presented by interweaving of songs which too were based on same incidences and theme.

The movie ‘23rd March 1931 Shaheed’ was almost frame to frame copy of ‘Shaheed-1965’ of Manoj Kumar.

I have been fortunate to present a few songs from the movies made on Bhagat Singh earlier on the blog, they are –

Shaheed – 1965 ( pagdi sambhaal jatta on 28.09.2013)

Shaheed E Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh – 1974 ( vekho loko on 23.03.2016)

The Legend of Bhagat Singh – 2002 ( desh mere desh mere meri jaan hai tu on 28.09.2018)

23rd March 1931 – Shaheed ( saans hain jab talak naa rukenge kadam on 23.03.2021)

Today I am going to present a song from the movie ‘Shaheed E Azam-2002’. It was directed by Sukumar Nair for ‘Surjit Movies’.

This movie was produced by Iqbal Gill. Gurmail Singh Dhami and Harjinder Dhami were the co-producers of this movie.

This movie had Sonu Sood in the role of Bhagat Singh. The other star cast included Raj Zutshi, Binnu Dhillon, Manav Vij, Dev Gill, Rajendra Gupta, Shama Sikander, Abhijeet Lahiri, Sadhana Singh, Ron Sladczyk and others.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Harinder Gill while its editing was done by Omkar Bhakri.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 23.05.2002.

Lyrics for the songs in this movie were written by Khwaja Parvez and S.M. Sadiq. This movie also included poetry of Baba Bule Shah and Sardar Bhagat Singh.

Music of this movie was composed by Maqbool Khan, Sabar Ali (Pakistan) and Sardool Sikender.

Today’s song is sung by Roop Kumar Rathod and Udit Narayan. On screen it is performed by Sonu Sood, Manav Vij, and Binnu Dhillon (I guess). This song happens to be in the jail premises as its picturisation shows.

Let us listen to today’s song now and pay our tributes to Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary today.

Two songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1999 have been covered in the blog. So 12 songs from 7 movies of 1999 sung by Lata Mangeshkar are yet to be covered in the blog.

Alphabetically “Dulhan Banoon Main Teri”(1999) is the first movie of 1999 that offers us a Lata Mangeshkar song to be covered in the blog.

“Dulhan Banoon Main Teri”(1999) was produced and directed by B Subhash. The movie had Faraz Khan (Late), Deepti Bhatnagar, Kashmira Shah, Johny Lever, Dilip Tahil, Pramod Moutho, Arun Bakshi, Vishwajit Pradhan, Anil Nagrath, Beena, Raj Kiran, Johny Whisky, Madhu Malti, Babban Lal, Sheetal, Dhirendra, Anand Jog, Madhu Acharya, Deep Dhillon, Subhash Rajpoot, Satyam Chauhan, Sheeba Bhakri, Vicky Borade, Geeta, Karan Verma(child artiste), Ajit Srivastava, Roop gagan Kang, Ajit Kumar, Vinny Kumar, Vivek Pande etc in it.

The movie had 9 songs in it. One song had the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in it.

Here is that one song from the movie.

This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod and chorus. Dev Kohli is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ram Laxman.

Only the audio of the song seems to available. A video (apparently fake) is in circulation, so that does not count.

The audio is more than ten minutes long. Prakashchandra, who sent the lyrics as well as other details, guesses that this song was picturised on Deepti Bhatnagar, Faraaz Khan(Late) and Vishwajeet Pradhan.
PS;THe video, whose link was pointed out by Mahesh Mamadapur, shows that the song is picturised on Deepti Bhatnagar and Faraaz Khan.

With this song, the movie makes it’s debut in the blog.

Today 19th July’2021 is the thirteenth birthday of this blog. We all wish this blog a very ‘happy birthday’ today and celebrate this occasion by listening to a song which has become a customary way to celebrate the occasion every year .

I have in the past already written how I much I love this blog and how it has become a part of our life now. I will not repeat the same here today . However, I would like to mention my first interaction with this blog which happened on 15th September’2009 on the post here. I may have visited the blog on an earlier date but it was on this day that I commented for first time on the blog and thereafter it became a routine for me to visit this blog regularly. It soon become a daily practice, then it would check it up many times a day. Now this blog is with me all the time. 😊

Though my first comment on the blog came on 15.09.2009 I became a contributor to this blog nearly three years later in 2012.

My first lyrics contribution was posted on the blog on 13.09.2012.

One can notice that I will enter my tenth year on the blog in less than two months from now, and that will be a very special occasion for me, one that ould call for a celebration with songs.

So, the ‘surilaa safar’ continues …

Looking back at the years passed by and looking forward to the many musical moments ahead, today’s song aptly expresses my feelings on the occasion.

This song is from the ‘1992’ movie ‘Saatwaan Aasmaan’.

“Saatwaan Aasmaan-1992” was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Prathima Movies’. It was produced by Pranlal Mehta. Himanshu Brahamabhatt was the Chief Assistant Director and Salil Verghese was the Associate Director of this movie. It had Vivek Mushran, Pooja Bhatt, Avtar Gill, Tanvi Aazmi, Tej Sapru and Shekhar Kapoor. They were supported by Mushtaq Khan, Manmauji, Amrut Patel, Manju Mishra, Rubeena, Shammi, Madhu Kambikar, Banjara, Donald Burman, Abdul, Ramakant Burman,

Story of this movie was written by Suraj Sanim. He also wrote the screenplay and dialogues of this movie. R. Rajendran was the editor of this movie.
Suraj Sanim was also the lyricist of this movie.

It was passed by Censor Board on 07.04.1992.

“Saatwaan Aasmaan-1992” had as many as nine songs in it. (As per information available on net sources). Lata Mangeshkar, Udit Narayan, Gurpreet Kaur, Poornima, and Ghanshaym Vasvani had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music of this film was composed by Raam Laxman.

I have not watched this movie, but I remember this song from my ‘Kota Days’ I like this song very much. I cannot say much about this movie as I have not watched it. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Today’s song is sung by Udit Narayan and Lata Mangeshkar. Vivek Mushran and Pooja Bhatt lip-sync the song on screen.

Lyrics for today’s song are by Suraj Sanim and music is composed by Raam Laxman.

With today’s song this movie “Saatwaan Aasmaan-1992” makes its debut on the blog.
