Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 32
—————————————–
DEEWAANI (1947) was produced by Sohrab Modi under the banner of Minerva Movietone and it was directed by Y D Sarpotdar. The star cast included Wasti, Mumtaz Shanti, Husn Bano, Ghulam Hussain, Abu Bakar, Chanda Bai, Jilani, Sadat Ali, Satya Rani etc. There were 8 songs in the film written by Shams Azimabadi (6) and Sewan Rizvi (2) which were set to music by Gyan Dutt. From the star cast and a couple of songs that I heard, the film seems to belong to social genre, probably a family drama. One song from the film has been covered in the Blog.

Today’s song is a delightful melody- a Lata solo from film Duiya Gol Hai-55. This song was quite a popular song in those days. I am surprised ( and happy too) that this Lata song has remained to be discussed here so long. Perhaps its Mukhada, as written in HFGK , is rather misleading-“Daalo karodon pe babuji khaak….”as it does not give any inkling about its melody or popularity. This film was produced and directed ( Debut) by Omprakash, the comedian.

I came across this song long back during my routine browsing. At that time I had not started looking for ‘Films with same title’.

It was because of the Google logo that I became aware that it was ‘World Earth Day’ on 22 april 2016. The next day (23 april 2016) the same google had William Shakespeare on its logo. Our Maheshji had also shared a screen shot of the google page that morning on our WhatsApp group. And on closer research I found that it was the death anniversary of William Shakespeare on that day.

Mohe panghat pe nandlaal chhed gayo re was one of the 12 listed songs from ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ (1960) which became very popular. Shakeel Badayuni was credited for this song though the song was inspired from a traditional dance (kathak) thumri written, probably sometime in the 19th century.

Lata’s Songs NOT YET covered on our Blog – 3
———————————————–
After my last Lata’s song NOT YET COVERED in our Blog, I came to a song, ‘Ab Kaun Sunega Mere Man Ki Baat’ from the 1947 film ‘Aap Ki Sewa Mein’. In spite of its listing in ‘Lata Samagra, and Gandhar’ as Lata song, I had my doubt about the singer, listening to the Mp3 Audio that I had since long time. Searching for the video on you tube I found two postings and both had mentioned the singer as Mohantara Ajinkya (Talpade).
