‘Saand Ki Aankh’ (2019) was produced by Anurag Kashyap under the banner of Reliance Entertainment and was directed by Tushar Hiranandani. The main cast included Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar, Prakash Jha, Vineet Kumar Singh, Preeta Bakshi, Sara Arjun, Kavita Vaid, Himanshu Sharma, Shad Randhawa, Nikhat Khan etc.

The film is a biopic of two aged women from the Johri village in Uttar Pradesh (UP) – Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar who had become the professional sharpshooters during their 60s and won many awards and medals despite facing obstacles from their patriarchs. They had appeared in Amir Khan’s TV Show ‘Satyamev Jayate’, Season-1, Episode 11. Currently, their granddaughter, Seema Tomar is the only Indian woman shooter who has won the Silver Medal at the International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup held in England in 2010.

The film is an affirmative attempt on woman’s emancipation. The initial a month long shooting of the film was done in Chandro and Prakashi’s old house in Johri village and around in the Baghpat district of UP. There is some influence of Haryanvi dialect in Johri village due to its proximity to Haryana. Hence, in the dialogues, the film has used Haryanvi dialect mix with Hindi. During the shooting, Taapsee Pannu stayed with the joint family of Chandru and Prakashi for more than a month to get familiar with their way of life and they spoke with their body language. Bhumi Pednekar may have learnt the Haryanvi dialect in-house as her mother, Sumitra Hooda-Pednekar is from Haryana.

The gist of the story of the film is as under:

Chandro (Bhumi Pednekar) and her sister-in-law, Prakashi (Taapsee Pannu)  based in a village in Uttar Pradesh, are a part of a patriarchal joint family. Now grandmothers, they have spent most of their six decades of life doing household chores, working in the agricultural fields, collecting fodders for their milch animals and looking after children. The men-folks of the family led by the eldest, Rattan Singh Tomar (Prakash Jha) who is also the Sarpanch of the village spend most of their time sitting on the cots kept in the verandah and smoking hookah. Chandro and Prakashi feel that they have spent nearly six decades of their life without a purpose. In the back of their mind, they hate patriarchal ways of the society, but they have accepted the system as a faitaccompli. Their smiling faces show a life of fulfillment.

Dr. Yashpal (Vineet Prakash Singh) has recently opened a shooting academy in the village. Chandro and Prakashi takes their granddaughters to enrol in the shooting academy on the assumption that after becoming shooters, they will get government job. Out of curiosity, the grandmothers hold the shooting guns and discover that they have skill to shoot the bull’s eye. Over a period of time, they become expert in shooting under the guidance of Dr Yashpal and participate in many local and regional shooting competitions and winning many medals. The men-folks in the family are not aware of what these two women have achieved as they used to go for shooting practices in the pretext of visiting the temples and attending satsang. The grandmas now encourage their granddaughters, Shefali (Sara Arjun) and Seema (Pritha Bakshi) to become shooters.

Soon, the men-folks of the family learn through newspapers what Chandro and Prakashi have done which was considered taboo for women for going out and mingling with men.  To add to their insult, they also learn that their granddaughters are also being trained for shooting. The hell breaks out in the family with Rattan Singh throwing out all the medals won by Chandro and Prakashi and ordering them to stop participating in the shooting competitions. Somehow, with the great efforts by Dr Yashpal, Rattan Singh reluctantly allows the granddaughters to join the shooting academy.

The film ends with Seema, the granddaughter of Prakashi receiving a rousing welcome in her village after winning the silver medal in shotgun shooting in an international competition in London. The family patriarch,  Rattan Singh Tomar and other elder male members of the family join the villagers in the celebrations.

When Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu were chosen to play the roles of Chandro and Prakashi who were in their 60s, there were some murmurs in the film industry as to why some elder actors with their proven ability to do such roles were not considered. After watching the film, I feel that both of them have justified their selection with immaculate delivery of dialogues in Haryanvi dialect coupled with their body language. Both have acted superbly. Their on-screen chemistry make us believe that they are real sister-in-law. Both of them won the Filmfare and Star Screen Critics’ Awards for Best Actress.

For the first time, I have seen Prakash Jha in a major role in the film. He acts superbly as the patriarch of the family with a villainous touch. However, as the film comes to an end, I do not hate his character. He has acted like a typical Haryanvi tau who wants his writ to be followed by his family without appearing him to be a confrontist.

The film has 5 songs written by Raj Shekhar which have been set to music by Vishal Mishra. I am presenting the first song, “Aasmaan Ooncha Hai Mera, Tu Hi Chhoo Lena” from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle. To the best of my knowledge, this is Asha Bhosle’s last solo song released for a Hindi film as on date.

The song is played in the background while granddaughters are leaving home for shooting training in Delhi.  The situations depict the feelings of Chandro and Prakashi their granddaughters are facing initial hiccups in staying away from the family for a long time for pursuing their career. During their training the scenes also show the difficulties they faced and overcome these obstacles to achieve their dream of becoming the country’s top shooters. In their pursuits, their grandmothers motivate them over the phone. The song is a mix of melancholy  and inspiration in keeping with the scenes.

Music director, Vishal Mishra had said in an interview which appeared on ‘Cinema Express’ dated October 8, 2019, as to why he was keen to take Asha Bhosle for the song who had not sung for the film for a long time. I quote:

I had to make a melody that had a special divinity to it. As soon as the song was composed, lyricist Raj Shekhar and I wondered how we could convince Asha ji to sing this track. After listening to it, Asha ji loved it so much that she said, “aaj kal aise gaane bante nahin hain” (such songs are not made anymore).

It is just a coincidence that the lyrics of the song fit well on Asha Bhosle’s early life when she was struggling to make a career in playback singing. Her husband had thrown her out of his house and pregnant Asha with her two children had taken shelter in her mother’s house some time in the mid-1950s. I visualise this song as if some celestial voice has inspired Asha Bhosle in those difficult years to boldly face the problems. Despite many ups and down in her professional career and in her personal life, Asha Bhosle never gave up. And she overwhelmingly succeeded in ‘touching the sky’ (“aasmaan….. chhoo lena” in the lyrics) in her singing career. Note a line in the song, “सारी दुनिया साथ ही फिर गाएगी, हाँ गाएगी”.

After listening this song, now I know as to why music director, Vishal Mishra and the lyricist, Raj Shekhar were keen to get then 86-year Asha Bhosle to render this melancholic and inspirational song. This song touched my heart.

Hullo Atuldom

September 5th is the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was a teacher (Professor to be exact) who also went on to be the 1st Vice President of Independent India (1952- 1962) and the 2nd President of India (1962- 1967).

I have only read about him, in history books, as he had passed away (in 1975) by the time I became conscious about things happening around me. I have read that his Thesis on “The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions” was published when he was only 20. From 1909 onwards, he was appointed a Professor at Madras Presidency College & later at The Maharaja’s College, Mysore; still later at the University of Calcutta. He was Vice Chancellor at the Andhra University and after that at Benaras Hindu University.

He was not active during the freedom struggle & his political career started only after his successful academic career. Post independence Dr. Radhakrishnan represented India at the UNESCO and also was India’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union before being elected Vice President of the country in 1952.

When he became President Of India in 1962 some of his students & friends requested him to allow & celebrate his birthday on September 5th. He replied (hope I am correct about this) “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.”

And so, since then India celebrates 5th September as Teacher’s day.

(Most of the above I have learnt in my history books and some information I have extracted from the internet.)

As a high school student, I used to look forward to these type of special days as our school & later college had their own style of celebrations. For Teacher’s day, some students were assigned the duties of being a teacher, to any particular class or subject. And like all teachers, we used to dress differently on that day; meaning we were allowed the privilege of attending school in coloured clothes (we used to call it un-uniform, I think). We students also used to contribute towards buying flowers & gifts for our teachers in addition to decorating the classrooms with festoons etc. For this, the students used to reach the school earlier than usual, so that everything was in place before the school began. The students, who were assigned teacher duties, would go from class to class, according to the given time-table, & get to experience what it was to be a teacher. All this would be supervised by the particular subject teachers & let me tell you, personally, I used to love being a teacher.

It makes me feel good (or is it proud, can’t name my exact feelings) that I am in touch with many of the teachers who made me what I am. I try to meet them whenever there is any event in the school, ever since I left school after class 10. And it makes me feel loved when they recognise in spite of all the years that have passed since.

This is my message to my teachers (hope at least some of them read it)

‘Wishing all my teachers a very happy teacher’s day. My namaskarams to all of them. Starting from Banaji teacher in my nursery school followed by Ratnamma, Vijayalakshmi & Ammu teacher in primary and the full set of teachers in secondary – Saraswati Ramachandran, Shymala, Jayamani, Kurup, Shankuntala, Mangala Joshi, Gaonkar, Prabha, Gokhale, P.T. teacher & Sir, Ajinkya, Shaila, Tiwari Sir, Pillai Sir, Abraham & Mariam Joseph. Plus all my teachers in college – Deepa Rathi Ela vora, Nina Dias, Joyce Joseph.

A big hug to all of you.

Thank you for giving me a good Base”

(Unfortunately some of the teachers mentioned in there are no longer with us)

In recent times, I have seen a few messages that thank friends and family- Mata, Pita & Guru (in that order) on teacher’s day. That in my opinion is a very good thing.
Last month I saw a film on a satellite channel, that showed how a teacher was trying to mould the lives of students who could not afford tuitions from expensive coaching classes. The film showed how some classes made a lot of profit, imparting tuitions to students who have dreams of entering the IITs & engineering colleges in India. Students who are, otherwise, bright in studies cannot even dream of getting into these classes, leave out the engineering colleges, due to the prohibitive fees structure prevalent. So, the film shows how this particular mathematics teacher & educator manages to coach his batch of 30 students crack the IITJEE, successfully.
The film was called “Super 30” and was the biography of Anand Kumar from Patna, Bihar; who was awarded the Padma Shri by the government for his efforts in the field of education & literature. By 2018, 422 out of 510 of his students had made it to the IITs.

“Super 30” (2019) was the film which had Hrithik Roshan play Anand Kumar with Aditya Srivastava, Mrunal Thakur, Sadhana Singh, Manav Gohil, Pankaj Tripathi, Veerendra Saxena, Amit Sadh as the supporting cast. There was a whole set of new faces playing the students. The film was treat to watch. It had songs written by Amitabh Bhattacharya & Ajay-Atul were the music directors. The song with this post is in the voice of Hrithik Roshan. He is seen asking his students to develop a questioning nature, find a solution where ever possible.
A salute to the teachers. Happy Teachers Day

Song-Question mark (Super 30)(2019) Singer-Hrithik Roshan, Lyrics-Amitabh Bhattacharya, MD-Ajay Atul

Lyrics

bheja nichode jo saare sawaal
ek ek karke dhoondh ke nikaal
kaahe na suljhenge inki majaal
noch ke dikha de baal ke bhi khaal
sawaalon ke bina hai zindagi hai dark
bulb ki tarah jala de question mark
question mark
question mark

kyun ek baar mein hi padhke maan len hum
kitaabon mein likha hai jo
maza to tab hai jab
oo kar ke hum dikha den
na pehle ho saka hai jo
sikhaane waalon ko sikha denge
padhenge aisi ki padha denge
rahenge shabd ko badal ke hum
nahin se kyun nahin bana denge
are buddhi ki circuit mein paida kar u spark
ban ja pyaare chalta phirta aa question mark
question mark
question mark

antarman kare cheetkaar
utsukta ho sar pe sawar
question se tu mat maan haar
chal bhid ja barkhuddar
bhale buddhi ki muthhi ho tight
ho wrong right mein chhidi fight
har prashn ke uttar par hai tera adhikaar
adhikaar
darwaajon ke peechhe
aur bistar ke neeche
luk chhip ke rehta hai
ek question mark

dharti se ugta hai
ambar mein dikhta hai
paani mein behta hai
ye question mark
mehnat karenge maatha phodenge
iski akad ko lekin todenge
sone deta nahin chidhaata hai
isko bhi saste mein na chhodenge
are bachke jaane na paaye question mark
haan bachke jaane na paaye question mark
haan bachke jaane na paaye question mark

23rd January 2022

Today 23rd January ’22 is the one hundred and twenty-fifth birth anniversary (born on 23rd Janunary, 1897) of our great leader Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. On this occasion as a tribute to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose we listen a song from the recent movie ‘Gumnaami’ (2019).

I watched this movie on OTT platform last week and would like to mention here or rather I would like to request that every Indian should watch this movie. I think this movie was made in Bangla and Hindi language. The version available on OTT is the Bangla version. But major part is in Hindi and English so anybody can easily understand this movie.

The movie is based on the Mukherjee commission findings and the research movement taken by Mission Netaji and the later events.

Senior member of our team Shri Sadanand Kamath ji has presented a song from this movie “Shubh Sukh Chain Ki Barkha Barse” on the blog on 23.07.2020. His post elaborately mentions about the movie and its content. So, I would not like to repeat the same again here in this post.

But, yes, I would like to mention here that the movie has been successful in bringing the essence of the movement lead by the two journalists Chandrachur Ghose and Anuj Dhar in real life to bring forward the truth of Gumnaami Baba who died at Faizabad on 16th September 1985. In the movie we have shown that one journalist (Chandrachur Dhar) and his few friends put on their fight through RTI and other sources to prove that Gumnaami Baba was very much Subhash Chandra Bose.

This song is said to be the original song composed to welcome Subhash Chandra Bose in Singapore where he reached after a 90 day marine journey, from Germany in a submarine (U-Boat) provided by Hitler’s Govt.

I present here the film version as sung by Sonu Nigam, as well as the original audio recording that was made just after World War II. The original audio recording has one extra stanza.

An honor salute to the Great Son of India, the only one leader who is called Neta ji.

And it seems that the mystery is destined to abide for a long long time.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films: 35

‘Gumnaami’ (2019) is a Bangla film with fairly good parts of dialogues in Hindi and English. The film is produced under the banner of Shri Venkatesh Films and is directed by Srijit Mukherjee. The main star cast consists of Prosenjit Chatterjee (as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and later as Gumnaami Baba), Anirban Bhattacharya (as journalist, Chandrachur Dhar), Tanushri Chakraborty (as Ronita Dhar), Surendra Rajan (as Mahatma Gandhi), Sanjay Gurubuxani (as Jawaharlal Nehru) etc. The film was released on October 2, 2019. Being a recent release, as of now, the movie is not available on video sharing platforms.

I watched the film on one of the OTT platforms. The film is not a biopic on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It is based on later events, relating to the investigations by Mukherjee Commission, which was set up by Government of India in 1999 to probe the death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The Commission was assigned the task to tackle the three broad theories surrounding the alleged mysteries and unanswered questions related to Netaji’s death. First, Netaji died in a plane crash while taking off from an airport in Taiwan. Second, he staged a fake plane crash to escape to Russia where he died in prison. Lastly, Netaji staged a plane crash, escaped to Russia and returned to India as a sanyasi (monk) known as ‘Bhagwan ji’ or ‘Gumnaami Baba’ who died in September 1985 in Faizabad.

Film starts with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru advising Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who was the then Congress President, that he should support the British Government during World War II. They also advocate non-violent methods for attaining India’s freedom from the British Rule. Netaji disagrees by saying that freedom is to be snatched from Britishers rather than demanding from them. Due to his differences with Congress High Command, he resigns from the Indian National Congress. He goes abroad to make allies with Japan and Germany who are at war with Great Britain and the Allied forces. He sets up Indian National Army with the support of Japan.

After the surrender of Japan to allied forces in Burma, Netaji shifts his forces to Singapore and then to Bangkok. He advises his forces to surrender while he with Rahman will go to Tokyo for onward escape to Soviet Union which, according to his view, would become anti-British after the war. He can then fight for India’s independence from there. While travelling to Soviet Union, Netaji’s plane catches fire and he dies after a few hours of the accident due to burn injury on August 18, 1945. He is cremated and his ashes are taken to Tokyo.

There have been many commissions and reports to inquire about the circumstances of Netaji’s death but there still remains uncertainty and the doubts have been raised in various quarters about the death of Netaji from time to time. In 1999, Government of India decides to set up the Mukherjee Commission go into the mysteries behind Netaji’s death afresh.

In 2003, a journalist, Chandrachur Dhar is given an independent assignment by his employer, Indiatimes to make a research-based study on the mystery of Netaji’s death. Chandrachur believes that all the myths surrounding Netaji’s death are hoaxes. Nevertheless, he takes up the assignment and spends much of his time in gathering evidences. During this period, his entire thinking about Netaji’s life changes. The study and research on the Netaji’s life becomes his obsession to such an extent that he neglects his personal life. His wife, Ronita feels that she is living with a husband who is unstable, crazy and unpredictable. In a fit of anger, she ransacks all the papers and documents which Chandrachur had collected in the course of his reasearch. She files for a divorce and gets it. In frustration, Chandrachur resigns his job. Instead, he forms a passionate group of his friends called ‘Mission Netaji’ to study and research to solve the mystery of Netaji’s death.

Based on extensive studies and research, Chandrachur makes presentations before the Mukherjee Commission with evidences to prove that Netaji did not die in plane crash but escaped to Russia by staging a fake plane crash. From Russia, he came to India via Tibet as a wandering monk and stayed in Lucknow. He submits 19 evidences in support of his contention.  In 2005, Mukherjee Commission presented the report to the Government of India. The Report was presented to Lok Sabha and was publicly released.

Chandrachur and his friends of ‘Mission Netaji’ have assembled in his house to read the Commission’s report. Ronita, his ex-wife has come to wish her best to Chandrachur. While Commission has come to the conclusion that Netaji has not died in the plane crash based on the various evidences including the DNA report of his remains which have been kept in Tokyo, which was identified as that of a Japanese soldier. However, due to absence of any concrete evidence, the Commission is unable to come to the conclusion whether Netaji escaped to Russia. Further, the DNA test of Gumnaami Baba did not match with that of Netaji.  The Government of India rejected the report without giving any reasons.

The rejection of the Commission’s report affected Chandrachur so much that he locks himself in a room full of the books, and documents collected over the last 3 years for his ‘Mission Netaji’. He starts burning every documents, files and books connected with his research so much so the entire room engulfs with fire. Ronita calls his friends and gets the door broken to rescue Chandrachur. The film ends with Ronita convincing Chandrachur to keep on fighting for the truth of Netaji’s death. Hence, the fight must go on until an end to the mystery.

Before I started watching this film, I did not have a very high expectation from the film because, there has been many films on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Furthermore, I was one of the believers that Netaji died in the plane crash in August 1945 and the talks thereafter about the mystery of his death were all myths and conjectures. But once I completed watching the film in one sitting, I must admit that the director, Srijit Mukherjee has managed to present the film in a way which made me to rethink about the controversies surrounding Netaji’s death. This film is a class by itself putting it on a different pedestal.

Prosenjit Chatterjee, in the role of Netaji as well as Gumnaami Baba has given an excellent performance which was a pleasant surprise for me as most of his roles in Bangla films are that of a romantic hero. His performance as a Gumnaami Baba looks so real that for once, I started feeling that Gumnaami Baba could really be Netaji in disguise. As Netaji, almost all of his dialogues are in Hindi and English. It is only when he turns to act as Gumnaami Baba, his dialogues are in Bangla.

Another roll of honor in the film goes to Anirban Bhattacharya, who in the role of Chandrachur Dhar, has given the superb performance as a journalist. His submissions to the Mukherjee Commission and the crazy reactions to the news that the Commission’s reports have been rejected by the Government are his top-most performances in the film. In fact, he has an equal presence in the film if not more than Prosenjit Chatterjee.

The film is a mix of black & white and colour. The scenes involving Netaji in pre-1945 period are in black & white while scenes representing Gumnaami Baba, Chandrachur Dhar, the journalist and the proceedings of the Mukherjee Commission are in colour. The film has dialogues in Bangla, Hindi, English and few dialogues in Japanese. These combinations in the film give a feel of a period atmosphere as well as the natural proceedings of the story in the film.

While on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, it is incidental and interesting to note that today, July 23rd,is the Remembrance Day of one of Netaji’s closest aides who led  INA’s Women Wing named the Rani Jhansi Regiment. She is Captain (Dr) Lakshmi Sehgal (24/20/1914 – 23/07/2012) of INA born as Lakshmi Swaminathan. She had barely completed her MBBS and arrived in Singapore, where she met with Netaji and got immersed in the Azad Hind movement.

During the surrender of Singapore by British to the Japanese, Dr Lakshmi helped heal the wounded soldiers of prisoners of war, many of whom were Indians. They desired to form the Azad Hind Fauj. After the arrival of Netaji in Singapore in July 1943, Dr. Lakshmi met Netaji who was keen to take women into INA. Thus she became Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan of Rani Jhansi Regiment of INA.

In Burma operations, INA joined Japanese in December 1944 but by March 1945, Japanese were on the losing ground. INA decided to beat a retreat from Burma. While crossing into Imphal, Captain Lakshmi was arrested in Burma by the British Forces and held in prison in Burma until March 1946 when she was sent to Delhi for trials as a war criminal. However, on the eve of India getting independence,  Captain Sehgal and many of the INA facing trials were set free.

In March 1947, Captain Lakshmi married Prem Kumar Sehgal and shifted to Kanpur. She continued her medical practice in Kanpur. She became a Rajya Sabha member in 1971. During the Bangla Desh crisis in 1971, she set up relief and medical camps for refugees from East Pakistan in Kolkata. During the Bhopal gas tragedy in December 1984, she led a medical team to look after those affected by the gas. She was active as a medical practitioner until the age of 92.

‘Gumnaami’ (2019) has 5 songs of which 3 are in Hindi. All songs have been used in the film as background songs. I am presenting “Shubh Sukh Chain Ki Barkha Barse” rendered by Babul Supriyo and chorus. There is an interesting history behind this song.

After the establishment of the provisional Government in exile of INA in 1943, Netaji decided to have a National Anthem for his Government. He himself selected Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s “Jan Gan Man Adhinayak Jai He” and asked Mumtaz Hussain and Colonel Abid Hussain Saffarani of INA to translate it into Hindustani so that it becomes easy to understand the meaning to all. He selected Captain Ram Singh Thakur to composed in the martial music so that the listeners would be awaken. It is significant to note that on the day of India’s independence on August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the Tricolour on the ramparts of the Red Fort after which Captain Ram Singh Thakur of INA conducted the orchestra with his musicians, playing the tune of the National Anthem of INA.

In the film, this song appears towards the end of the film, incorporating the flashback of what has happened in the life of Netaji from 1940-45 and the efforts made by the journalist to unlock the mystery of Netaji’s death. The credit title of the film gives credit to Mumtaz Hussain and Colonel Abid Hussain Saffarani as lyricists and the music to Captain Ram Singh Thakur. However, I feel that Rabindranath Tagore should also get the credit since the tune was originally composed by him for “Jan Gan Man Adhinayak Jai He”. The audio clip of the song has one extra stanza.

It is the song which reminds us with moist eyes, the fond memory of Netaji of his sacrifice for the freedom of the motherland.

4065 Post No. : 15200 Movie Count :

4177

Most traditional Hindi movis are formula movies. The formula keeps changing with time and the movies made during that era have same stories based on the same formula with minor variations.

Once in a while we have movies based on real life events. One finds that movie makers try to convert them to a formula movie.

Movies during the early years post independence tended to be tragic movies with sad ends. No matter what the topic, the movie would still have the usual songs. So, when movies based on true life stories were made, they followed the same formula.

“Lahore”(1949) is one example, which was made on the background of partitition. Same was the case with “Nastik”(1954). These movies had lots of songs, and the characters are seen suffering most of the time.

Then in 1960s, we had “Haqeeqat”(1964), made on the background of Indo China war. This movie was based on war, but it was mostly a musical movie with lots of hit songs, and war almost getting relegated to the background.

After many decades, Indians slowly started to have some achievemments under their belts. So, accordingly, Indian movies stories became more positive where the hero was more assertive than before.

During the last few years, several movies have been made on real life events, and most of these movies are success stories.

“Dangal”(2016) was based on a real life story of a man who despite living in a male dominated society manages to turn his daughters into international wresters. It was a real life inspiring story that caught the imagination of not only Indians but also Chinese audience ! The movie did a business of over Rs 700 crores in China !

Personally I loved “Parmanu”(2018), which was based on Pokharan II, an eventthat signalled the rise of a new and assertive India, far from the days of 1962 that “Haqeeqat”(1964) depicted.

“Uri” (2019) was based on surgical strike of 2016. There were people who left no stones unturned to tell us that surgical strike did not take place, and their supporters in India asked for proof. Believers went to the movie and turned it into a box office success. This episode, like the episode described in “Parmanu” (2018) demonstated the rise on a new and assertive India which would not take things lying down if wronged and would retaliate aggressively.

A country gains self confidence when it is doing well in economy and related fields. Indian economy is doing well for the last few years and India economy is fifth largest GDP in the world. Some media houses gleefully reported that India had slipped to seventh position, but that was on december 2018. As on today, India is again 5th biggest economy, a fact that our media is hiding from us.

A country can rise up the economy ladder only if it has high quality highly educated manpower. Low quality manpower can take an economy up to certain level, but after that level, you need top class manpower to take you forward. India at present is a low middle income group nation (per capita earning in the region of $ 1000 to $ 4000 per annum). India will need to more than double its GDP and then we can hope to break into the ranks of upper middle income nations (per capita income in the region of $ 4000 to $ 12000). Final barrier is $ 12000 and a country with per capita earning above that figure becomes a high income country.

Only those countries that invest in high quality education and high quality infrastructure can break in the league of upper middle group nations and finally into higher income nations. India has a long long way to go. But India is in the right track. I can visualise India breakin into the rank of upper middle rank nations when Indian GDP reaches about $ 6 trillions. It would be sometime in the next ten years.

GDP of a nation keeps climbing at a good rate only if a country is doing high quality work which can be sold all over the world. India is a world leader in high quality research products like pharmaceuticals, health services etc. These sectors will help India grow up in future. In manufacturing sector, I hope to see some interesting world class products, like say Train 18 from Indian Railways and Tejas from HAL, which will have good market worldwide, if Indian Government can plan and execute the plans well.

ISRO, Indian space agency is a shining example of what Indian manpower is capable of. ISRO has earned tremendous name and goodwill for its stellar works. It has launched many satellites of foreign advanced nations and they have played an important role in earning respect for Indian manpower. It is not for nothing that many silicon valley big wigs are people of Indian origin.

“Mission Mangal”(2019) is based on ISRO’s mangalyaan expedition. With this mission, ISRO succeeded in sending its spacecraft (mars orbiter) to Mars successfully in thhe very first attempt, and they did it on a shoe string budget.

The movie “‘Mission Mangal” (2019) is jointly produced Cape of Good Films, Hope Productions, Fox Star Studios, Aruna Bhatia, and Anil Naidu and directed by Jagan Shakti. The movie has Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Nithya Menen, Kirti Kulhari, Sharman Joshi, H. G. Dattatreya, Vikram Gokhale, and Sonakshi Sinha etc in it.

When this mission had actually taken place, social media was abuzz with a photograph that showed a few homely housewife looking ladies who were in reality ISRO scientists and who had played important roles in the success of the mission. The makers of this movie have been greatly influenced by this fact. The movie shows lots of female power in the movie.

The story , based on real life ISRO stories, starts by showing failure of a GSLV launch on December 25, 2010 due to an error of judgement by project director Tara Shinde (Vidya Balan). Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) takes the responsibility of the failure on himself. As a punishment posting, he is hunted out to “Mangalyaan” mission, a mission no one has much hopes on.

Maenwhile Tara Shinde too gets herself transferred to Mangalyaan project and she has some idea about how this project can be successfully executed. Rakesh Dhawan and Tar Shinde convince the ISRO head (Vikram Gokhale) to support them by budget and staff. Budget is limited and keeps getting reduced, and the manpower asked in not what was needed. They end up with rookie scientists like Eka Gandhi (Sonakshi Sinha)the propulsion control expert, who is dying to leave ISRO and join NASA as soon as possible, spacecraft autonomy designer Neha Siddiqui (Kirti Kulhari ) whose second name causes raised eyebrows when she is looking for rented accomodation, navigation expert Krittika Agarwal (navigation expert) who has great difficulty learning to drive a car. Her husband is in Army who gets injured in an accident. Satellite designer and payload expert Varsha Pillai (Nithya Menon) has a nagging mother in law at home who taunts her for being childless.

There are two male scientists too. Astrology believing Parmeshwar Joshi (Sharman Joshi) is told by his astrologer that his “Mangal” is bhaari and that is why he is unable to get married. No wonder he is reluctant to join the mission. Then there is Anant Ayengar (H G Dattatreya) who is one year short of retirement and is already counting days.

How Rakesh Dhawan and Tara Shinde get their team to deliver and how successfully deal with major hurdles constitutes the story. While there are some critics who have found lots of weaknesses and holes in the story, I loved the movie. I find the episodes quite entertaing. When Rakesh Dhawan first goes to the mangalyaan area of ISRO, he finds that vacant and without any sings of life. Then he finds a matka with water in it. So there is water in mars- he observes. Then a cat enters the hall. So, there is life in Mars, he concludes.

The movie is based on a real life story, so we all know what exactly happened. Still the movie keeps you glued to your seat. And it gives you goosebumps when the rocket lifts off from its launch pad.

This is a movie only Indians could have made and only Indians could have identified with. I am happy that a movie was made on this subject. The makers have done the best they could have. instead of finding faults (like what some people have done) I take it as glass half full and I enjoyed th movie. I think that most Indians who like to be positive about their lives and about their country will enjoy this movie.

The movie has three songs in it. My personal favourite is the theme song. The lyrics of this song are by Amitabh Bhattacharya and he has indulged in some interesting word play in this song. The song is sung by Benny Dayal , Vibha Saraf and others. Music is composed by Amit Trivedi.

This song happens to be the 15200th song in the blog. It is the first time that this blog has a new song from the current year as the century song. I think this song fully deserves it. It is a song that I loved from the very fist time I heard it and watched it.

These days we have two actors who are competing for making movies on nationalistic subjects. One is Akshay Kumar and another is John Abraham. I had loved John Abraham’s “Parmanu”(2018) and I loved Akshay Kumar’s “Mission Mangal”(2019). In 1960s and 1970s, we had Manoj Kumar making patriotic movies. Today we have John Abraham and Akshay Kumar. There is one cartoon which shows the two of them grabbing each other by their collars, arguing about who should take up which nationalistic story next. Then there is another cartoon showing Akshay Kumar with P M Modi. Modi tells Akshay Kumar-“Keep making movies, I will keep giving you story ideas.” It must be said that the story idea for Article 370 is something that a Frederick Forsyth or Leon Uris would have been proud to write.

So, here is the 15200 th song for the blog. It must be one of the most unnoticed century post occasion which apparently no one was looking forward to, including even I myself. Nevertheless, the needful needs to be done. So we are now 15200 song post old with this writeup. I take this opportunity to thank all our visitors and well wishers for their continued encouragement and support. May we keep scoring many more centuries in future.

With this song, “Mission Mangal”(2019) makes its debut in the blog.

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 12
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Cannot believe that we have reached the milestone of 15k on the blog. Just seems like yesterday that we were all waiting with bated breath to reach the 10k milestone. How time flies, and how consistent and persistent all of you have been. No words to express each one of your dedication, passion and labour of love.

What can one say about this haven of ours that has not been said before? For someone like me who has been like a pardesi in some ways (not being active as all the regulars), it is so heartening when all of you still reach out and ask how things are with me and family.

Team ASAD we could equate with the CSK team in IPL, consistent, champions and liked by one and all. Needless to say, we have calm, composed leaders to lead us too 🙂 .

It does feel guilty that our Yippeeee! team could not continue our work after a point of time, and yet there is hope that we would get back to it one day soon and try really hard to get to the ever moving target of the blog :).

These days, the only place I get to listen to songs is the car, and most of the times, it is what my daughter decides to play that we get to listen to. One of the recent numbers that is pretty much on repeat in her current playlist is a lovely song from the upcoming movie that most people are looking forward to called ‘Kalank’.

The song has been picturised so well, and is even better thanks to two amazingly talented actors, Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt. The voice for these two are the versatile Shreya Ghoshal and Vaishali Mhade. For some reason, when you listen to this song multiple times, reminds us of songs sung by the Mangeshkar sisters (the names of the songs do not come to mind).

Though Pritam is accused many a time to blatantly copy songs for his tracks in movies, he does come up with some brilliant numbers that forces you to play them in a loop.

I know I have not done justice to this article celebrating the 15k milestone of the blog, nor the song featured here, but I am hoping the article would be the last thing on your mind after you listen to this beautiful number which has such an amazing tempo and so well rendered.

Wishing Atul ji, Sudhir ji, Arun ji, Khyati Ben, Raja ji and the entire paltan and followers of the blog, a very big Congratulations! This is no mean achievement, and I am sure for the celebration we can expect some amazing trivia and posts to reach even more unique milestones with this one big milestone. Let the force be with our blog.

Blog Day :

3916 Post No. : 14979 Movie Count :

4095

A someone who has written so many articles on HFM in the blog, people may believe that I have watched lots of movies. That is not true. Out of all the thirty odd posters in the blog, I may have watched the least number of movies. 🙂

When I was in the real movie watching age (in my teens), I watched a few movies till 1972, and then there was a six year hiatus lasting till may 1978 when I did not watch any movies. Then I reached college and got “freedom”which I duly misused by watching movies left and right (bunking college) as if making up for lost time. A few years later, I would begin watching movies in hostel, movie halls etc during my engineering days and later during the early years of my postings.

Then there was a bigger break from watching movies beginning from 2000 ! I was posted to North East parts of the country in january 2000 (just as the new millenium started). From that time till about 2007, I did not watch a single movie in movie halls. Subsequently, I watched “Lage Raho Munna Bhai” in a dilapidated movie hall in Jabalpur in 2008.

I did not watch any other movies from 2008 till about 2014. By that time single screen movie halls were history and one needed to go to malls to watch movies. The very first movie of the decade of 2010s that I watched was in Bilaspur and it was in a mall at Bilaspur. It was “PK”(2014) that I watched in december 2014, just a few days before the Mumbai gangout that I attended.

Next movie that I watched was “Bahubali” part I at Gorakhpur in 2015 while I has reported there on transfer and was waing for my posing order. I was posted to Izatnagar, Bareilly and it was there that I watched “Bahubali” part II in 2017, this time with my wife and daughter. This became the first and so far only movie that my entire family has watched together.

Then I watched a few more movies there. I learnt the art of booking tickets online in advance from my daughter. 🙂

It must be said that most of the movies that I have watched this decade and century have been “hat ke” movies. I cannot stand routine movies and so I do not watch such movies.

Last movie that I watched at Izatnagar was “Pokharan”(2018)- a movie that was right up my alley !

If one looks at the list of songs in the blog, we have songs from movies of every year from 1931 till 2018 ! We are in 2019 but so far no songs from movies of 201`9 have appeared in the blog.

I am in Gorakhpur right now and I have managed to watch a few movies this year. The first movie that I watched was “Uri”, followed by “The Accidental Prime Minister”. Subsequently I have watched “Kesari” and “Junglee”.

In my opinion, it is not the right time to discuss “Uri” and “Kesari”. I will discuss them later. Here I would discuss a song from “Junglee” (2019).

The movie and its actors were all unknown quantities for me. The movie began with great promise but as time wore on, the makers of the movie decided to reduce it to a farcical C grade movie.

In the end, a movie that could have been this era’s “Haathi Mere Saathi” was reduced to a forgettable movie.

The movie ended on a rather unsatisfactory note as far as I am concerned. The second half of the movie was quite farcical. The hero, despite being shot several times from close range and left to die, does not die. What is more, he recovers fully and regains full energy overnight, with all the gun shot woulds vanishing miraculously within hours. The logic followed by the makwers was that everyone else in the movie was expendable, but not the hero. So we find Heroes father as well as the bull elephnd of the jungle- dying at the hands of poachers, just like that, while the hero does not.

I would have liked the bull elephant (shows as friend of the hero since childhood) to survive. That would have been a heart warming end, rather than the less than satisfactory end to the movie.

Just as the movie ended and people began to troop out, we found this song getng played. Arre ! such a hummable song should have been a part of the main movie, rather than being presented as an afterthought, after many of the movie goers have already left the hall !

On checking up online, I find that thiis song is sung by Navraj Hans, Hamsika Iyer, Abhishek Nailwal and Gulshan Kumar. Kumar Suryawanshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sameer Uddin.

The song is picturised on the hero (Vidyut Jammwal), Pooja Sawant, Asha Bhat etc.

This is a song that needs to be watched and savoured in isolation, rather than as part of the movie. If one watches this song in isolation, it is quite a heart warming and feel good song.

With this song, “Junglee”(2019) as well as the artists of the song make their debuts in the blog.

I am totally unaware about the singers, so my colour coding and identification of voices is a non starter and I have not even tried to identify the voices. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the voices.

Lyrics

Shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare
hey
shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare

inko na tum chhedo bhaiyya
sanak na jaaye inka pahiya
arre inko na tum chhedo bhaiyya
sanak na jaaye inka pahiya

ye waise to cool hain
par inka ik usool hai
ye bhoolte na bhai kuchh bhi
inse panga lena bhool hai
ye baithh bhi jaayen
to hote hain sher se oopar
ye tata thaiyya karte
bade mast mauji ban kar

bhaagen saare paanv pasaare
garje jab gajraaj hamaare

shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare
shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare

yeaah

dham dham dham dham dham kaanpe
dhara dhara ye
panja rakhhe bhara bhare ye

mrignayani aankhon mein bas jaa
ya phir unke raste se hat jaa

pyaar se bolo
god uthhaa le
aankh dikhaai to dhobi pachhaade

hoy hoy hoy
hoy hoy hoy

inka junglee hai tashan
khud mein rahte hain magan

sher khan bhi kare hain
inke saamne jatan

mil kar dharti ambar saare
kar den shat shat naman tumhaare

shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare
shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare
shor macha hai jungle mein
soond uthhaaye dangal mein
garje gajraaj hamaare
garje gajraaj hamaare
