#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

I was looking for a song from specifically from the year ‘1968’ today for presenting here on the blog. When I browsed the ‘list of movies’ on the blog I came across this tiltle ‘Balram Shrikrihna-1968’.

‘Balram Shrikrihna-1968’ was a mythological movie based on Shrimad Bhagwat Katha.

I do not remember to have watched this movie and neither the songs from this movie seemed familiar to me when I check the list in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

When I selected a song and looked for its link I found it is luckily available in video format too.

So, today in this post I present this song from this movie ‘Balram Shrikrishna-1968’.

Incidentally this song is picturised on Bela Bose and Madhumati.

Bela Bose who had acted in more than two hundred films passed away a day before yesterday at the age of eighty years. She was born on 1st January’1943 and left for her heavenly abode on 20th February’2023.
Bela Bose was a trained dancer and she also acted in many regional language films.

She was present in many movies that I get to watched in my childhood years and specially remembered her role in ‘Jai Santoshi Maa-1975’, ‘Devar-1966’ and other movies which I watched of her.

“Balram Shrikrishna-1968’ was directed Chandrakant for ‘Joy Films’.

Chandrakant was also the producer of this movie.

It had Dara Singh, Shahu Modak, Premnath, Nana Palsikar, Randhawa, Azad, Ashish Kumar, Jemini Ganesh, Prithviraj, Savitri, Jayshree Gadkar, Geetanjali, Madhumati, Bela Bose, Padma Rani, Sushma, Uma Khosla, Aruna Irani, Sulochana Chatterjee, Babu Raje, Shery, B.M. Vyas, Anand Joshi, Arvind Pandya, Bhalerao, Radheshyam, Pal Sharma and others.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Chaturbhuj Doshi and dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pande
Editing of this movie was done by Ram Khade and Vithoba Surve.

This movie has nine songs written by Kavi Pradeep and composed to music by C. Ramchandra.
Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey and Kamal Barot had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Two songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog on 10.05.2019 and 27.02.2020.

Today we present the third song from this movie on the blog.

Today’s song is sung by Kamal Barot and Asha Bhonsle and on screen it is Bela Bose and Madhumati performing on the song, which is ‘playful’ song. If I am not wrong we can also see Polsan and one other actor (Dilip Dutt?) whom I am unable to identify in the picturisation of this song, where they disguised as ‘sadhus’ and later as ‘female dancers’.

Let us now listen to this song and pay our tributes to Bela Bose …

Phir kaise neeyat badal jaaye na
Jabse sainyya beimaan

‘Naseehat’ (1967) was produced by Dara Singh (though Parduman Singh and Saudagar Singh are listed as producers) and directed by Om Patwar for Deedar Movies, Bombay. The movie had Darasingh, Rajshree (South), Randhawa, Savita, Madan Puri, Tiwari, Sapru, Rajan Haksar, Bhagwan Sinha, Leela Mishra, Kundan, Rajan Kapoor, Samson, Uma Dutt, Keshav, Rinku, Meena, Saudagar Singh, Helen, Madhumati and others.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Today (28 January 2022) is the 17th remembrance day of OP Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007). On this occasion here is a song from “Naseehat”(1967).

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Kamal Barot and Mahendra Kapoor. SH Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by OP Nayyar.

The song is picturised as a dance song aboard a cruise liner. The music begins as a Beatles type western tune on guitar, but it soon gets converted into an arch-typical OP Nayyar punjabi bhangda dance music. The female dancers could be Helen or even her clone Madumati (both figure in the star cast). Male dancer could be Randhawa. I am not sure So I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the dancers and others seen in the picturisation.

[Ed Note: As dear Prakash ji confirms, the lead dancers are Madhumati and Sheila Ramchandra, and two of the supporting dancers are Manjula and late Saroj Khan.]

Song-Teri aankhon ne in aankhon se jo baat kahi (Naseehat)(1967) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Mahendra Kapoor, Kamal Barot, Lyrics-SH Bihari, MD-OP Nayyar

Lyrics

teri aankhon ne
in aankhon se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye

teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye
teri ankhon ne
in aankho se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye
teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye

chaman mein jab kabhi
chali baade saba
dabi aawaaz mein
ye kaliyon se kaha
raho hoshiyar o o o
chaman waalon zara
raho hoshiyaar o o
chaman waalon zara

hoye kaun ye jaane
toot ke bijli
kab gir jaati hai
teri aankhon ne
in aankhon se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye
teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye

tumhaare pyaar ki
koi meethhi nazar
ghadi bhar ke liye
sahaara de agar
to maujon mein rahoon oon
kinaara chhod kar
to maujon mein rahoon oon
kinaara chhod kar
ho pyaar hai jin ko
toofanon se
kab ghabraate hain

teri aankhon ne
in aankhon se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye
teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye

yahi baanki ada
yahi deewaanapan
ye dil ki dhadkanen
ye manzil ki lagan

salaamat hai agar
to phir ae jaaneman
salaamat hai agar
to phir ae jaaneman
hoy chaar kadam tum chal kar dekho
manzil aa jaaye

teri aankhon ne
in aankhon se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye
teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye
teri aankhon ne
in aankhon se
jo baat kahi
hum jaan gaye
teri baaton mein
kya baat chhupi
hum baaton se pehchaan gaye

Today (14 November 2020) is Children’s day in India.

UN Children’s day is observed on 20 November. India began to celebrate Children’s day (on 20 November) since 1956. However, India started observing Children’s day on Jawaharlal Nehru’s birthday (14 November) starting from 14 november 1964), viz after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru (14 november 1889- 25 may 1964) earlier in the year 1964.

According to wikipedia

Children’s Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. It is celebrated on 14 November every year as a tribute to India’s First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Fondly known as Chacha Nehru among children, he advocated for children to have fulfilled education.Nehru considered children as real strength of a nation and foundation of society. On this day, many educational and motivational programs are held across India for children.

The celebration of Children’s Day in India dates back to 1956. Prior to the death of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, India celebrated Children’s Day on 20 November (the date observed as Universal Children’s Day by the United Nations). After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, his birth anniversary was deliberated to be celebrated as Children’s Day in India. It was done so because he was very popular with the kids as Chacha Nehru, hence, a resolution was passed in the parliament to give a befitting farewell to the first Prime Minister of India.

Today 14 november 2020 is also Deepaawali !

There are some people (including myself) who were curious to know if Children’s day in India as well as Deepaawali have fallen on the same day in the the past as well.

I did some research, and found that Deepaawali has coincided with 14 november on 6 occasions in the past 120 Years. Here are the details:-

Year Day Remarks
1898 Monday
1917 Wednesday
1936 Saturday Exactly same as in 2020
1955 Monday
1974 Thursday First occastion of Deepawali falling on India’s Children’s day
2020 Saturday Exactly same as in 1936

Gregorian calendar (to determine birthdays) and Hindu calendar (to determine deepawali and other festivals) applicable in 1936 and 2020 were identical ! So the Hindu festivals of both these years fell on the same dates and same days on Gregorain Calendar!

“Naunihaal”(1967) is an ideal movie to celebrate Children’s day. The movie was about Nehru and it was about children. This movie was directed by Raj Marbros for ‘Mercury Productions, Bombay’. The movie had Balraj Sahni, Indrani Mukherji, Sanjeev Kumar, Master Babloo, Harendranath Chattopadhyay, Abhi Bhattacharya, Madhvi, Jagdeep, Asit Sen, Brahm Bharadwaj, Manmohan and others.

The movie had seven songs in it. Five songs have been covered. Here are the details:-

S.No. Song Title Posted on

On the occasion of Children’s day, here is a quintessential children’s song from “Naunihaal”(1967), a song where Children’s are happy with the fact that chhutti has finally arrived. 🙂

The song is sung by Kamal Barot, Krishna Kalle and chorus. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Madan Mohan.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

4454 Post No. : 15921

In my last three articles, I have discussed Hindi film dancers, Mohana Cabral, Sheila Vaz and Minu Mumtaz. One common factor in all the three dancers was that they had active Hindi film careers of around 5-6 years after which they got married and quit Hindi films when they had not even attained 25 years of age. They took the responsibilities as house-wives and lived happily with more or less the same level of comfort and life style as they would have got had they continued their filmy careers. To this list of three Hindi film dancers, I am adding one more dancer who also quit Hindi films after her active years of Hindi film career during 1960-66. The name of the dancer is Jeevankala. She got married in 1969 when she was 25.

I got background information on Jeevankala from her two interviews – one in 1964 which was published in ‘Picture Post’ magazine and republished in ‘Cineplot’ on January 1, 2012. The other interview was of recent origin which was taken by Shishir Krishna Sharma in December 2018 and published in his Blog, ‘Beete Hue Din’ on March 31, 2020. Based on these two interviews, the main highlights of the profile of Jeevankala and her journey with Hindi film industry are given below:

Jeevankala (also written as Jeevan Kala) was born on June 29, 1944 at Pune to Dattatreya and Gangubai who were actors in silent films and later in Marathi films when sound films started in 1931. However, after Jeevankala was born, the parents gave up their film career. Incidentally, the name, ‘Jeevankala’ was suggested by her neighbour, Lata Mangeshkar. Jeevankala did her primary schooling in Pune. Simultaneously, knowing his daughter’s interest in dances, the father put her under the tutelage of Babsaheb Gokhale for Kathak dance and Professor Gaekwad for Bharatnatayam dance for a period of 7 years. Later, she learnt all other formats of dances by herself.

In 1957, Jeevankala’s family shifted to Mumbai as she got a job of assiatant dance teacher in Bharatiya Vidhya Bhawan and taught Kathak dance to students. She was also participating in Lata Mangeshkar’s musical shows in Mumbai in which she used to give her dance recitals. She also attended the night school and completed her Matric in 1960.

In one of Jeevankala’s dance recitals, producer-director K Amarnath saw her skill in dancing and offered her a role of a dancer in his film, ’Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959) in which she had two dance songs. However, she also said that ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959) was her debut film in which a song “Akhiyaan Bhool Gayi Hain Sona” was picturised on her. [As per her filmography, she had already acted in 8 films during 1956-58. I will come to it later].

After she was noticed in her dance skills in ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959) and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959), Jeevankala started getting many films offers. Starting as a dancer, over a period of time, she started getting character actor’s roles and also romantic roles pairing with comedians. She also got the role of a vamp in ‘Mr. X in Bombay’ (1964) and ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968).

In 1969, Jeevankala got married to Ram Kelkar, the story, screen-play and dialogue writer in Marathi films. It was a marriage arranged by Sulochana Latkar who was like ‘God Mother’ to her after the death of her mother in 1965. After marriage, Jeevankala quit the film industry. Her husband, Ram Kelkar became a successful story, screen-play and dialogue writers for Hindi films like ‘Beimaan’ (1972), ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ (1974), ‘Sanyaasi’ (1975), Kaalicharan’ (1976), ‘Asha’ (1980), ‘Hero’ (1983), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989), ‘Khalnaayak’ (1993) etc.

On the basis of Jeevankala’s filmography checked from the various sources, I have been able to list 110 Hindi films in which she worked during 1956 to 1968. A few films of her were released late up to 1974. Her active years of film career was during 1960-1966, appearing in 70 films. In the 1964 interview, Jeevankala gave the impression of ‘Kal Hamara Hai’ (1959) as her first Hindi film and in the 2018 interview, she mentioned ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959) as her debut film. It is interesting to note that in ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959), Jeevankala has not been accredited in the credit titles of the film. But she appears in one song of the film.

A further interesting observation about Jeevankala’s filmography is that before 1959, she had worked in as many as 8 films which include ‘Alam Ara’ (1956), ‘Paristaan’ (1957), ‘Khota Paisa’ (1958) and ‘Detective’ (1958). In ‘Khota Paisa’ (1958), a dance song “O Jaan e Jaan Muddat Ke Baad” has been picturised on her.

Jeevankala, who started with big banners film producing companies like Prakash Pictures’ ‘Goonj Uthi Shahnai’ (1959) and K Amarnath Productions’ ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959), drifted into ‘B’ grade movies in the genres of fantasy, action, costume drama, thriller etc. In such films, heroes would be like Sheikh Mukhtar, Ranjan, Daljeet, Dara Singh and heroines would be like Chitra, Vijaya Chowdhary, Parveen Chowdhary, Nishi etc. Of course, she also continued to be associated with big banner films like ‘China Town’ (1962), ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), ‘Mere Sanam’ (1965), ‘Khandaan’ (1965), ‘Himalaya Ki God Mein’ (1965), ‘Saawan Ki Ghata’ (1966), ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968) etc.

Jeevankala has also worked in some Marathi films. In ‘Putra Whava Aisa’ (1961), she was in lead role opposite Vivek in which an immortal song,  जिथे सागरा धरणी मिळते beautifully rendered by Suman Kalyanpur was picturised on Jeevankala. A laavani  song, रेशमाच्या रेघांनी, लाल काळया धाग्यांनी from ‘Marathi Tituka Melwava’ (1964) was also picturised on Jeevankala as a laavani dancer.

In the interview of December 2018, Jeevankala has claimed that about 70 songs have been picturised on her. Our Blog has covered 38 songs picturised on her and 17 songs, the video clips of which are available on video sharing platforms are yet to be covered on the Blog. Thus, the total songs picturised on Jeevankala works out to 55. In addition, there could be a few more of her songs for which video clips are not available as some of her films are not traceable as of now.

During the listing of songs picturised on Jeevankala, I came across an obscure  film ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) (In the credit titles it is written as ‘पंच-रतन’ in Hindi) which was directed by Kamran. The star cast consisted of Randhawa, Parveen Chowdhary, Kamran, Kamal Mehra, Amarnath, Shyam Kumar, Randhir, Sadhana Khote, Jeevankala, Laxmi Chhaya, Meenaxi, Aruna etc. The full film is available for viewing in HD quality and it belongs to the ‘Action-Costume Drama’ genre. Probably, this film was meant for those audience who used to enjoy wrestling bouts between Dara Singh, King Kong and others in the 60s at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, Worli in Mumbai. In addition, there are sword fights in the film for such audience.

The film has 5 songs written by 2 lyricists – Anjaan (4) and Upendra (1). I am presenting the song, “Kya Ho. . . Kahin Miley Do Nigaahen” from ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965). The song is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot and is picturised on Laxmi Chhaya and Jeevankala, respectively. In the audience, Parveen Chowdhary,  Randhawa, Kamal Mehra, Meenaxi and Shyam Kumar can be seen among others.

The song is written by Anjaan which is set to music by Sardar Malik.

Song – Kya Ho. . Haaye Kya Ho (Panch Ratan) (1965) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Kamal Barot, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Sardar Malik
Suman Kalyanpur + Kamal Barot

Lyrics

kya ho
haaye kya ho
kahin miley do nigaahen
phir kya ho
arre kya ho
haaye kya ho
tumhen kaise samjhaaye phir kya ho
puchho na
jaan e jaan

baat hai
raaz ki

haaye kya ho

jab jawaan hasraton ka
jaam ho chhalka chhalka
dagmagaate ho armaan
ho nasha halka halka
aise mein
jab koi
dekh le
pyaar se

phir kya ho
kahin miley do nigaahen phir kya ho
arre kya ho
tumhen kaise samjhaayen phir kya ho
puchho na
jaan e jaan

baat hai
raaz ki

haaye kya ho

ho sama aashiqaana
dil mein bhi bachpana ho
aisi naazuk ghadi mein
unse jo saamna ho
dil dagaa
de hamen

dhadkane
jaayen tham

phir kya ho
kahin miley do nigaahen
phir kya ho
haay kya ho
tumhen kaise samjhaayen phir kya ho
puchho na
jaan e jaan

baat hai
raaz ki

haaye kya ho

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020)-Song No. 12
———————————————–

“Sunahri Naagin”(1963) was directed by Babubhai Mistry. The movie had Mahipal, Helen, Anwar, Pratibha, Sapru, Ulhas, Kamal Mehra, Ajit, Habib, Shyam Kumar, Ragini, Bir Sakuja, K N Singh, Sulochana, Tun Tun etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here are the details of the earlier songs covered in the blog:-

Song Posted On
Been na bajaana jaadu na jagaanaa (Sunahri Naagin) 12 march 2010
Tu hi tu hai main dekhaa karoon (Sunahri Naagin) 14 march 2010
Chhedoge mujhko agar jaan ke (Sunahri Naagin) 16 march 2010
Mil ke bhi ham mil na sake (Sunahri Naagin) 3 june 2010
Main to ho gayi re badnaam (Sunahri Naagin) 16 july 2018

As can be noticed, this movie made its debut in the blog on 12 march 2010. Next two songs from the movie were discussed on 14 march 2010 and 16 march 2010. So, a song from this movie was covered on this day ten years ago !

So the movie becomes a candidate for Blog Ten year challenge !

Ten years ago, the daily output of the blog was as low as it is in the present. Nowadays we are plodding along at barely one song a day. Those days, barely one song or two a day were often punctuated by spells of DOT days.

The reason for such slow output was that I was transferred from Jabalpur to Nagpur (in december 2009) and the entire process took upto end of february 2010. During this time I was living a nomad’s life and posting articles was a struggle.

Nevertheless, I was on the verge of settling down, and I had started to post two songs daily by March 2010. Following two songs were covered on this day ten years ago:-

Song Posted On
Chhedoge mujhko agar jaan ke (Sunahri Naagin)(1963) 16 march 2010
Dil le ke jaate ho kahaan(O Tera Kya Kehna)(1959) 16 march 2010

“O Tera Kya Kehna”(1959) has since been YIPPEED in the blog.

Today, as part of “Blog Ten Year Challenge”, here is a synchronised dance song from “Sunahri Naagin”(1963). The song is sung by Lata and Kamal Barot. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandjui.

Resemblence of this song to “Hansta hua nooraani chehra” (Parasmani)(1963) is no coincidence. Both movies were directed by the same director (Babubhai Mistry) and written by the same screenplay writers (Pandit Madhur and Vishwanat Pandey). Both movies had Mahipal as the hero. This song in fact has the same tune. This song could be described as the equivalent song of “Hansta hua nooraani chehra” (Parasmani)(1963) in this movie. I am sure that Laxmikant Pyarelal were the composer of this tune (like that of “Parasmani”) as assistants to Kalyanji Anandji. Lyricist differs though. Here is in Indeewar. In “nooraani” song it was Asad Bhopali.

It is just a quirk of fate that “Hansta hua nooraani chehra” assumed cult status, while this song did not become that well known.

One of the dancers is Helen. I am unable to identify the other dancer. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors visible in the picturisation.

PS-Prakashchandra, our inhouse face recognition expert tells us that the dancers are Madhumati (Helen look alike) and Bela Bose. Occupants of the Raj darbaar throne are Anwar Hussain and Zeb Rahman (aka Preeti Bala).

aji kal dil ko bhaane lagega
jiske haalaat par nahin karte nazar

dil badalta hai pal bhar mein dildaar ka
yoon na akadiye yoon na bigadiye
naam bura takraar ka ho ho
kya jaane kab ho jaaye kisi se
koi pata nahin pyaar ka ho ho
yoon na akadiye

“Pyaar Ki Baazi”(1967) was directed by K Malik and Shaukat for Salim Productions, Bombay. This “social” movie had Jagdeep, Vijaya Chaudhary, Anuradha, Paro, Anant Kumar etc in it.

This forgotten B grade movie had five songs in it. One song ws covered in the blog as far back as in 2011.

After the passage of nearly eight years, here is the second song from “Pyaar Ki Baazi”(1967) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot. Akhtar Romani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jimmy.

The song is picturised as a synchronised dance song. I am unable to identify the two dancers. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors seen in the picturisation.

tujhse meri saansen jaane kya daastaan kah gayin
haaye aankhen meri aankhen

o aankhon mein aankh daale

koi mujhe sambhaale hoye
aankhon mein aankh daale koi mujhe sambhaale
oye pyaar ki mehfil aur jawaan dil
roz kahaan milte hain
dilbar nazar mila le

aanchal mera aanchal
dheere dheere dhalakne laga
haaye kaajal mera kaajal pyaar ban ke chhalkne laga
o jeene ka gham mita le
jeene ka gham mita le
?? mein hans hansaa le hoye
jeene ka gham mita le
?? mein hans hansaa le hoye
pyaar ki mehfil aur jawaan dil
roz kahaan milte hain
dilbar nazar mila le

humdum mere humdum
tu agar saaz e dil chhed de
mausam yahi mausam jhoom kar gungunaane lage
o o aa tu bhi aaj gaa le
aa tu bhi aaj gaa le
kuchh sun le kuchh sunaa le hoye
aa tu bhi aaj gaa le
kuchh sun le kuchh sunaa le
pyaar ki mehfil aur jawaan dil
roz kahaan milte hain
dilbar nazar mila le
dambhar to muskura le
dilbar nazar mila le
dambhar to muskura le
hoy pyaar ki mehfil aur jawaan dil

The movie “Jantar Mantar”(1964) was directed by Radhakant for Omkar enterprises, Bombay. This “kalpnik” movie had Mahipal, Vijaya Chaudhary, Ulhas, Sherri, Jeewankala, Babu Raje, Mridula, Qamar, Ghanshyam, Ajeet Kumar, Dubey, Kesri, Saiyyad, Rajmala, Madhumati etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past. The first song was discussed on 21 march 2009 and the second song on 21 march 2019, exactly ten year later in the “blog ten year challenge” series.

Here is the third song from “Jantar Mantar”(1964) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kamal Barot. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sardar Malik.

The song is picturised as a synchronised dance song in a rajdarbaar, which was a standard song and dance situation in B grade Hindi movies of those days, with Kamal Barot being one of the singers. 🙂 My guess is that the two female dancers are Vijaya Chaudhary and Jeewankala. Nevertheless, I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors visible in the picturisation of this song.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 33

॰ ॰ ॰जिनके मिलन को तरसे
वो तो ना आए
मौसम आए जाये॰ ॰ ॰

It is your words that tell of this predicament. Seasons come and go, as they have, year on year on year. . .  but the one who this heart wants to listen to again, has not returned after going away. . .

– – – –

Rafi Sb has sung playback for a whole range of performers all the way from mid 1940s to early 1980s, and then some. He never declined to sing for any actor, be that a newcomer, a junior artist, or even non-entities who made just one song, one film appearances. On the other hand, the association of Rafi Sb’s voice with some very important and specific performers, has been well discussed and documented. Almost invariably, Rafi Sb was the singing voice for these artists, no matter what.

One name that is very familiar in this context is Johnny Walker. Starting his career as a small time comedian, Johnny Walker went on to command such importance in the film world that his role, and invariably a song lip-synched by him, was part of a formula in the world of Hindi cinema. Pick any Johnny Walker film in 1950s and 1960s – you can be sure there is also a song performed by him, with playback from Rafi Sb. Rafi Sb was able to create that unique and peculiar rendition for Johnny Walker songs, that blended so seamlessly with actor’s dialogue delivery and acting styles. That is the depth of the singing prowess of Rafi Sb. And it applies across all actors. He sang for them, in their own styles, almost completely making himself invisible inside that actor.

Today’s song in this series is a typical Johnny Walker song. The film is ‘Phool Baney Angaarey’ from 1963. The film is produced under the banner of Asiatic Arts Production, and is directed by Suraj Prakash. This is a social drama that weaves a story of a joint family during the period of India’s 1962 war with China. The star cast includes Mala Sinha, Raj Kumar, Johnny Walker, Ashish Kumar, Shammi, Mumtaz Begum, Mukri, Nasreen, Tuntun, Sarita Devi, Lakshmi, Leela Mishra, Chaman Puri, Ravikant, Mansaram, and Bhalla amongst others.

Geet Kosh lists six songs for this film. All songs are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Two songs of this film are already showcased here.

In this duet, Rafi Sb is accompanied by Kamal Barot. On screen, the song is performed by Johnny Walker and Shammi. The scenario is the first night of a newlywed couple. The groom is making efforts and requesting the bride to open her ghunghat and allow him to see her face. The exchange is comical, of course, given that Johnny Walker is the groom. He even mentions that yes, they have met before also, but that he just wants to confirm that he got married to the same person.

Enjoy this fun song, the penultimate in this series. Concluding episode should be coming shortly. 🙂
