Today’s song is from film ‘Kaarwaan’ (1956), a costume drama, made by Shahkaar productions, Bombay. Produced by Dev Jolly, it was directed by Rafiq Rizvi – whose career as a director came to a close with this film. His 6 films began with ‘Waayda’ (1940). The music was by S Mohinder. The lyricists were Tanvir Naqvi, Pt. Bhushan and Saarshaar Sailani.

S Mohinder aka Bakshi Mohinder Singh Sarna, was one of the very few Sikh composers in Hindi films (only 3 till 1970. Sardul Kwatra, GS Kohli and S Mohinder). For this film, he had 2 assistants. One was Inderjeet Singh, who was the maternal Uncle (mamma) of today’s singer Daler Mehndi and the other was Pt Kishen who was Husnlal and Bhagatram’s nephew (sister’s son). These two assistants were working with S Mohinder till 1961, after which both died one after another.

S Mohinder was born on 24-2-1925 in a small town called Silanwali in Montgomery District of un-divided Punjab. His full name was Bakshi Mohinder Singh Sarna.  His father Sujan Singh Bakhshi was a sub-inspector in police. Soon the family moved to a comparatively larger city Lyallpur, where young Mohinder around 1935 came in contact with an accomplished Sikh religious vocalist Sant Sujan Singh. He honed his skills for several years in classical music in the tutelage of Sant Sujan Singh. Initially he wanted to be a singer. The family moved to Sheikhupura , close  to Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Guru Nanak and S Mohinder got his further training in classical music from legendry Sikh religious musician Bhai Samund Singh. Frequent transfers of his father kept the family on the move. Since S Mohinder’s education was suffering badly, durIng early forties, he was enrolled in Khalsa High School in village Kairon in Amritsar District.

In 1947, the rest of the family too moved to East Punjab in India. The love for classical music brought S Mohinder to Benares. After a couple of years of grooming in classical music in Benares, the Mecca of Indian classical music, S Mohinder, came to Bombay, the leading center of film industry. His first successful film was ‘Neeli’ (1950), which was musically a hit but not successful on the box office. S Mohinder took a regular job of music director with Filmistan Studios, which was churning out movies like factory. He composed music for Filmistan for half a decade. It was a great experience.

After a successful relationship as a music director with Filmistan Studios, S Mohinder composed music for Chandu Lal Shah’s (Ranjit Movietone) film ‘Zameen Ke Taare’ (1960). It became a hit. After that he composed the music for Wadia Brothers film ‘Reporter Raju’ (1962) and producer Roop K Shori’s film ‘Ek Ladki Saat Ladke’ (1961). He gave music for unreleased film ‘Do Dost’ also.

S Mohinder says that during the sixties, when only Hans Raj Behl and Sardul Singh Kwatra were in the field of composing music for Punjabi films, he also tried his hand at Punjab films. The response was good. His music for his first Punjabi film ‘Pardesi Dhola’ was a hit. After that he mainly devoted his attention on composing music for Punjabi films only. His music for ‘Chambe Di Kali’ also became a hit. Inderjit Hassanpuri, a friend of S Mohinder, made a Punjabi film ‘Daaj’ for which S Mohinder composed very emotional tunes. Later on during the late seventies S Mohinder composed music for some non-film Punjabi albums too and the singers included the best in the Punjabi music business, Surinder Kaur and Asa Singh Mastana. These private albums were also instant hits.

In 1960, S Mohinder composed music for the film ‘Mehlon Ke Khwaab’ produced by Madhubala. The film did quite well at the box office and its music became a hit. The untimely death of Madhubala in 1969, during the prime of her youth deeply saddened S Mohinder. He came to the conclusion that the field of composing music for Hindi films was getting a lot of new players and the melody was slowly yielding place to noisy heavy metal music. So he decided to go back to his roots and switch to composing music for Punjabi movies.

Ram Maheshwari and Panna Lal Maheshwari, originally from Amritsar, decided to make a movie in Punjabi based on Sikh religious sentiments. The film was titled ‘Nanak Naam Jahaaz Hai’. S Mohinder got the contract to compose the music. The story of the film required some scenes to be picturized in the Golden Temple. S Mohinder thought that the music for those scenes was a very sensitive subject and must be performed by the finest exponent of Sikh Religious classical music. So he requested Bhai Samund Singh to sing the Shabads. Bhai Samund Singh was also the mentor of S Mohinder during his early training in classical music. Initially Bhai Samund Singh hesitated, but eventually he agreed to sing for the movie. S Mohinder believes that what Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s singing was to the great movie ‘Mughal e Azam’, the shabads sung by Bhai Samund Singh are to Punjabi film ‘Nanak Naam Jahaaz Hai’. As we all know film ‘Nanak Naam Jahaaz Hai’ has been an all time hit Punjabi movie. Its music was also as big a success.

The runaway success of ‘Nanak Naam Jahaaz Hai’ ushered in an era of for making well meaning movies based on Sikh religious stories. S Mohinder composed the music for most of these Sikh religious movies.’Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam’ (1974) featuring Shaminder Singh as the hero was the next film, it was also quite successful. Then came two more namely ‘Man Jeete Jag Jeet’ (1973) and ‘Paapi Tare Anek’ (1976). Both were successful at the box office. All these movies were made during the decade of seventies. S Mohinder also composed some of his most memorable music for these movies.

During the decade of nineteen seventies, S Mohinder composed music for some private albums also including some featuring Sikh devotional music and some featuring the folk music of Punjab. Legendry Punjabi singer Surinder Kaur was prominently featured on some of these albums. He gave music to 36 Hindi films, composing 243 songs. He also sang 3 songs in 3 films.

S Mohinder left India for the USA in October 1982, when he was at the peak of his career as a music composer. The last film featuring his music was named ‘Maula Jatt’, with Dara Singh in the male lead role. Today’s song is written by Tanvir Naqvi. Tanvir Naqvi (real name – Syed Khursheed Ali) was born on 16th February 1919, at Lahore. His father was a jaagirdar and elder brother was ADC to a nawab. Tanvir went to Persia, along with father, where he was educated in Urdu and Persian. From the age of 14 years, he started writing poetry and participated in various mushairas. He published a book of poetry, titled ‘Suhaane Sapne. By chance, AR Kardar read it and called Tanvir to Bombay to write for his film ‘Swami’ (1941), made by CIRCO Productions.

In his next film, ‘Nai Duniya’ (1942), Suraiya sang his song as her first song. His films ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946) and ‘Jugnu’ (1947) became hits and all his songs were appreciated much. He had earned a good name. However, after film ‘Parda’ (1949), he migrated to Pakistan. In 1954, K Asif invited him to India to write songs for his film ‘Mughal e Azam’, but by that time, Naushad had built his own team and he declined to take Tanvir Naqvi. From 1954 to 1959, Tanvir did many films. He also joined S Mohinder and wrote songs for his 7 films.

In 1959, Tanvir Naqvi shifted again to Pakistan, but this time for good. There also he wrote for many films, like ‘Koel’, ‘Jhoomar’, ‘Salma’, ‘Gulfam’, ‘Elaan’etc. He wrote also for Punjabi films. He had married Idaan – elder sister of actress singer Nurjehan. However, since he had no children from her, so he married again and had 2 children.  He died in Lahore on 1-11-1972. In India, he wrote 224 songs for 48 films. Some of his songs are popular even today.

The cast of the film consisted of Shakila, Mahipal, Heeralal, Gope, Yashodhara Katju, Randhir, Satish, Sheila Vaz, Helen, Cuckoo and others. All the usual actors for a C grade costume drama. I find that most main actors are the subject matters of many articles, but actors like Heeralal are left out. I reproduce below a brief biosketch of Heeralal that I have earlier posted for the song “Main Hoon Bhaiya Dim Timkar“.

Heeralal is a familiar face to every fan of vintage Bollywood as he played countless character parts, often as the villain, in literally hundreds of films both big and small. He was born Heeralal Thakur, on March 14, 1912 in Lahore (now part of Pakistan) and began his career in silent films with AR Kardar’s ‘Safdar Jung’ which was released in 1930. Incidentally, his second film, ‘Daughters of Today’, actually made it to movie theaters first, in 1929. He was under contract to United Players Corporation and made several silent pictures for them before making the transition to talkies and moving on to other studios for films like ‘Pavitra Ganga’ (1932), ‘Seeta’ (1934), and ‘Blood Feud’ (1935).

Some of his notable fantasy, sci-fi and horror films include ‘Khooni Jaadugar’ (1939), ‘Arabian Nights’ (1946), ‘Mehbooba’ (1954), ‘Hatimtai Ki Beti’ (1955), ‘Roop Basant’ (1955), ‘Sakhi Hatim’ (1955), ‘Shah Behram’ (1955), ‘Indra Sabha’ (1956), ‘Shaan e Hatim’ (1958), ‘Dr. Z’  (1959), ‘Dr. Shaitan’ (1960),  ‘Jadoo Mahal’ (1962), ‘Flying Man’ (1965), ‘Gumnaam’ (1965), ‘Sindbad, Alibaba and Alladin’ (1965), ‘Love And Murder’ (1966), ‘Sheba And Hercules’ (1967), and ‘Alibaba’ (1976). Hiralal worked continuously until his death on June 27, 1982.

He had worked in 203 films. His first film was ‘Pavitra Ganga’ (1932) and last film was ‘Kaalia’ (1981).

Today’s song is actually a very sweet song and had been a popular song in its time. This is a duet of Lata and GM Durrani. The mukhda says – “Ae Saarbaan, Saarbaan. . .”. The word saarbaan means actually ‘camel handler’, but in Persian language it also means the caravaan leader. I liked this song very much. In fact, many of the songs composed by S Mohinder are very good, but somehow he never became an A grade composer.

मिले ना फूल
तो काँटों से दोस्ती कर ली॰ ॰ ॰

दस बरस पहले, एक सफर शुरू हुआ – एक सफर जिसका कुछ भी नियत नहीं था, कुछ निश्चित प्रयोजन नहीं था, कुछ आशा भी नहीं थी के ये सिलसिला जाने कब तक चले। बस सिर्फ एक धुन, और एक नग़मा – ले चला जिधर ये दिल निकल पड़े।

और साथ ये भी कह दिया कि मंज़िल कहाँ कहाँ रुकना है ऊपर वाला जाने॰ ॰ ॰

कुछ मालूम नहीं था ये सफर क्या शक्ल हासिल करेगा। क्या कोई हमसफर मिलेगा? मालूम नहीं, ये सोचा भी था के नहीं। लेकिन फिर भी क्या॰॰॰ एक ज़िंदगी का तार पकड़ कर चल दिये। और सोचा यूं कि चलते चलो चलता हुआ साहिल है ज़िंदगी। ये तो अच्छा किया कि दूर की सोची नहीं। अब तीन साल में क्या हो या पाँच सात साल में क्या होगा ऐसी हर फिक्र को धुएँ में उड़ाते हुये, बस एक दिन और एक गीत – इस क्रम पे चलना शुरू किया।

कहते हैं, जब कर्म और विचार में खोट नहीं, तो प्रकृति, दिशाएँ, तत्व, देव – सब कुछ ही साथ हो संबल देते है।  दस साल पहले जो सफर अकेले ही शुरू हुआ था, आज इन दस साल के बाद अब इसकी गिनती करोड़ों में होती है।  क्रम नहीं बदला, नीयत नहीं बदली – जो बदला वो बस यही के लोग साथ आते गये और कारवां बढ़ता गया।

दस साल बाद भी, आज कोई पूछे तो जवाब नहीं बदला – ये हँसता हुआ कारवां ज़िंदगी का न पूछो चला है किधर॰॰॰।

कितने पड़ाव आए और गुज़र गये, कितने ही मील पत्थर रास्ते में मिले और नज़रों से ओझल हुये।  इस सफर में हम कहाँ कहाँ से गुज़र गये – देस भी घूमा, दुनिया भी घूमी; सागर, नदियां, पर्वत, वादियाँ, जंगल और सैहरा, रास्ते और गलियाँ, पनघट और खलिहान, बाज़ार भी, मेले भी और अकेले भी – सब कोने छू लिए। कभी रेल में, तो कभी मोटर कार में, कभी घोड़े कि टापों के संग, तो कभी रिक्शे में। कभी बैल कि गाड़ी में घूमे, तो कभी तांगे के हिचकोले खाये। कशतियों में कभी झीलों का झरोखा, और कभी जहाज़ में समुद्र का दीदार किया। साइकल की सैर भी की, और कभी प्लेन से सारी धरती को देखा। और तो और, क्रेन, ट्रक और ट्रैक्टर को भी नहीं छोड़ा।

कभी हरी दर्शन को तड़पते मन देखे, कभी मदीने की दुआएं मांगी।  कभी बंजारों के गीत सुने, और तो फिर कभी सूफी के कलाम। बुद्ध कि शरण में गये तो कभी येशु के दर पे सर झुकाया। कभी सृष्टि के चित्रकार को ढूँढा, और कभी कर्म गति की शिक्षा सुनी। कभी शुक्राने फरमाए उस खुदा की बंदगी में, तो कभी ज़िंदगी से ऊब कर उसे खूब खरी खोटी भी सुनाई।

कभी किसी नाज़नीं से लहंगे कि फरमाइश सुनी, और कभी प्रेमी कि ज़ुबान से चाँद कि उपमाएँ। कभी बरसात ने दिल लुभाया, तो कभी बात बात में मैंने दिल तुझको दिया। कभी गर्मी की धूप से बचने की सलाह देखी, तो कभी बर्फ की सर्दी को दिल की आंच से कम होते देखा।

गोद में बच्चों को सुलाते हुये माँ कि लोरियाँ सुनी, तो कभी बच्चों से माँ के आँचल कि पुकार। नग़में सुने दोस्ती के और ग़ज़लें सुनी इश्क़ की।  मोहब्बत के जलवों से रोशन जन्नत के नज़ारे किए, तो कभी टूटे दिल के नालों ने हमें भी रुलाया।

कभी दिल मचला और झूम के गा उठा – किसान अपनी फसल देख के, फौजी छुट्टी पर घर जाते हुये, इक जवान दिल इश्क़ का इक़रार पा कर, और तो कभी बस इस कायनात की खूबसूरती पर।

कभी दिल रोया और रो कर गाया – भीख मांगते हुये बच्चे, कोई बिछड़ कर जाने लगा, कभी मोहब्बत के धोखे उठाए, और तो कभी किस्मत के थपेड़ों की शिकायत में।

कभी एक चोर की कहानी सुनी, कभी बिक्री वालों से उनकी उम्दा दलीलें सुनी, कभी मेहनतकशों की प्रेरणा भा गई, और तो कभी सड़क पे तमाशों के नज़ारे किए।

हुस्न की जल्वानुमाई देखि, तो कभी हुस्न के एहसान; कभी हुस्न की संगदिली ज़ाहिर हुई, तो कभी सिर्फ शिकवों का ज़िक्र हुआ। फ़लक पे सूरज चाँद और तारों की कहानी सुनी, तो कभी शराब की मस्ती शराबी की जुबानी सुनी।

फूलों से किसी कमसिन के चेहरे को मुक़ाबिल देखा, तो कभी किसी अल्हड़ की लापरवाह चाल से झरनों की उपमा हुई।

कसमें वादे होते देखे साँसों की हद तक, और कभी टूटे वादों के साथ दिल के टुकड़े बिखरते देखे।

कोई जश्न का मौका छूटा नहीं, कोई नाम अछूता रहा नहीं।

कभी धरती और देश के झंडे से बुलंद हुये, तो कभी इंसानी ज़ुल्म से हताश।

कभी शहीदों की कहानियाँ पलटीं, तो कभी भली आत्माओं का दर्शन किया।

सुख की घड़ियाँ, दुख के बादल; हंसी के लम्हे, आँसू की ढलकन; मिलने की खुशी, ना मिलने का ग़म; प्यार का झगड़ा, बेवफाई के ज़ख्म; बारात का बाजा, दिल का राजा; मंदिर का दीपक, खुदा से दुआएं; रिश्तों की संवेदना, और साथ ही वेदना; प्यार का फलसफा, और ज़िंदगी की तालीम।

कभी वो गीत में, कभी नज़्म में, कभी ग़ज़ल में, तो कभी भजन में, कभी ट्विस्ट में तो कभी डिस्को में; कभी क़व्वाली में, तो कभी सहगान में; कभी कविता जैसी लगी, तो कभी कथा जैसी; कभी तुम्हारी छवि दिखी, कभी उसकी; और तो ज़्यादा कहानी अपनी सी लगी।

दस साल। दस साल और पन्द्रह हज़ार उमंगें। रोज़ की नई नवेली। कभी लगता भी है कि पहले सुना था, लेकिन फिर भी लगता है नया सा। कितने सारे भावों की बरसात हुई है, क्या बेशुमार दौलत मिली है – दस साल में। नायाब खजाना है। और सोचो तो, शुरू कहाँ से किया था – “॰॰॰काँटों से दोस्ती कर ली॰॰॰”। मुनासिब ही तो है, ये दौलत काँटों से गुज़र के ही पाते हैं। और तमन्नाएं॰॰॰ उनका तो कहना ही क्या। कुछ मिल जाये, इसकी तो फिक्र कभी थी ही नहीं। बस एक ही बात, एक ही लगन॰॰॰ दिल चाहता है॰॰॰  साथ चलते रहें हम न बीते कभी ये सफर॰॰॰

जी हाँ, दिल चाहता है। जब एक गाना ढूंढ रहा था इस जश्न के लिए, तो मन बहुत घूमने के बाद इस बात पे ठहरा कि एक सफरनामा होना चाहिए, एक गाना जिस में बस सफर हो, कोई मंज़िल न हो। जिसमें बस हमख्यालों का दख़ल हो। जो सब मेरे हमकदम हों, मेरे हमनशीं, मेरे हमज़ुबाँ हों। अपनी यादों और आदतों से वहीं ढूँढता रहा साठ और सत्तर से पहले। इत्तेफाक़ देखिये, मिला तो बखूबी वही जो दिल चाहता है। हाँ ‘दिल चाहता है’ – फिल्म भी वही और नग़मा भी वही। 2001 में जारी हुई ये फिल्म मेंने उन्हीं दिनों में अपने सफरगुज़ारी के दौरान देखी। न जाने क्यों, इस फिल्म से मोहब्बत हो गई। और खास कर के इस गाने से। हल्की सी मस्ती की लहर में हल्का सा ढुलकता सा गाना, सुस्ताता हुआ, आलसी सा गाना, धीरे धीरे बहता जैसे बहार में सुबह कि मीठी सी सबा॰॰॰ लापरवाही में एक प्रतिबिम्बित चिंतन॰॰॰ गाना तो ऐसे मन को भाया के बस।

होता है ना कभी कभी ऐसे ही। कुछ ऐसा कहा जाता है दो लफ्जों में, के और कुछ कहने की कसर बाकी रहती नहीं। जो बात मन की है, वो बस इतनी ही मुकम्मल है, जो ऊपर लिखे मिसरों में ब्याँ हो गई – तमन्ना है ये साथ चलते रहें हम न बीते कभी ये सफर॰॰॰

और कुछ कहना वाजिब नहीं।

इस फिल्म के ज़्यादातर किरदारों को पहली बार देखा था। बहुत सालों बाद एक हिन्दी फिल्म देखी थी शायद। मन को जम गई। 🙂

गीत जावेद अख्तर का लिखा है, संगीत बद्ध किया शंकर-एहसान-लोय कि तिकड़ी ने। गाने वाली आवाज़ शंकर महादेवन की है। स्क्रीन पर ये गाना बैक्ग्राउण्ड में फिल्माया गया। और क्या असरदार फिल्माया गया। गीत ही गीत सुनता है, बाकी सब खामोशी है। एक तुष्टि की, एक पूर्णता की खामोशी है। एक खुशी भरी सुस्ती की खामोशी है॰॰॰ जो दिल चाहता है वो मुझे मिला है॰॰॰ ऐसी खामोशी है

On 19 July 2008, a single step was taken by our Atul ji, the day on which the first song was posted on the blog. It was followed by yet another Roshan number the next day and the journey continues to this date and beyond, much akin to the above sh’er by Majhrooh Saab.

Looking back at the last decade, there is a deep sense of excitement and contention amongst all readers and especially the important contributors. However what is equally true is that the responsibilities and the hope of tracing and introducing obscure songs has only increased. This hope itself is the proof of the immense popularity that the blog enjoys all over the world.  I am sure the blog has become a one-stop destination for all readers in search for old Hindi songs and the correct and reliable information that it serves and continues to provide. About 4000 movies and nearly 15,000 songs covered, the blog has a visitors hits number of more than 10.5 million. Mind-blogging numbers indeed and one can only feel proud of being a part of this great musical extravaganza.

Since it is a special occasion of a decade of the blog’s existence, I suppose, I am at liberty to write a few words about my association with it.

Old Hindi Film songs were a common feature in my house, especially with SLBC and its special program ‘purani filmon ka sangeet’, which is played to this day and to which I am addicted to this day (ask our whatsapp group 🙂 ). With the advent of internet facility, the hobby of listening and gathering information naturally started dominating the searches. And, for people with music interest this blog was a no-escape and also a welcome addiction.

In the initial days, I just tried to absorb and admire the contents. It was not long that the longing to be a part of the blog started to grow. A few comments and corrections here and there started. Seeing that a lot of songs known to self were yet to be represented, I toyed with the idea of sending the lyrics. I ended up sending lyrics for 3-4 songs, but the greed to get more involved did not stop.

It was then that I starting writing posts. After a few posts and with the ideas and plots for writing posts difficult to come by, I started a mini-series on Mukesh and his composers. There is a small contribution of self in this series with 14 posts and 04 posts in another series titled Mukesh and his co-singers. Apart from the posts on Mukesh, I feel proud to have written about Rafi saab, Talat saab and Lata Mangeshkar. There are individual posts on Shamshad Begum, Uma Devi, etc. I have also written about Ghulam Mohammed and Shankar Jaikishan whose compositions, I enjoy immensely.

Of the 30 odd posts, “Sab Thhaath Pada Reh Jaavegaa” has had a great influence on me and especially the verses.

There was time when some songs of Mukesh were not to my liking. This view is particularly for a few songs at the fag end of his career wherein you find him singing all types of songs without the Midas touch of late 1940’s and 1950’s. Not having understood the lyrics properly, I had counted the above song also in that category. However, while writing the post and especially after Sudhir ji’s English translation, the song seems to be nothing short of philosophy of life that one must follow.

And then, “Lo Mil Gayi Degree Pyaar Ki” had its own story before it was put up as a post. A virtual Kishore Kumar solo was converted into a Mukesh post just because he had two words in the song. It was the last song of Mukesh-Roshan to be introduced to the blog and there was no way, I could lose the opportunity. Many eminent personalities were contacted who held different views on how Mukesh could fit in as he was not part of the movie etc.

Lastly, “Gokul Nagri Jaana” remains the oldest song sung by Mukesh on the blog. I have special memories of writing this post, as I was aware that I had touched upon a gold mine of 06 special songs of his career. Two of them remain untraced to date, but then there have been many surprises on this blog and I am sure all six will be accounted for.

The past year has been hectic for me from job and work point of view. However, with this post, I have barely managed to avoid the guilt of not having contributed for an entire year. I expect saner time allotment for this hobby again.

Coming back to the blog, I consider the following to be a few unique and unparalleled aspects about it.

  • Accuracy and authenticity of the contents
  • Complete and correct lyrics
  • Responsible, authoritative and sound contributors
  • The classification and arrangement of songs under various heads
  • Easy accessibility of information on Hindi songs
  • Common platform for like-minded Hindi songs enthusiasts
  • Due recognition and importance accorded to various artists
  • Accurate statistics of songs and artists contribution.

There could more important USP’s of the blog; however, the following two aspects are also quite important.

  • Opportunity for contributors to pen their thoughts on the blog
  • A unique friendship circle amongst the regulars

I think every reader and especially the contributors can never thank Atul ji and Sudhir ji enough, to acknowledge and appreciate the opportunity given to us to pen down our thoughts and represent songs on the blog. This is a very selfless and noble deed of Atul ji. Like-minded people met online on this blog and started a very special and unique circle, with quite a few sessions, visits etc. A whatsapp group is also formed with a few of the regulars and is more active than the blog itself now. 🙂

For me personally, the opportunity to interact with Mr. Harish Raghuwanshi ji was a great personal fulfilment. He has always helped me with my lists in the posts and also with information which would have been nearly impossible to trace elsewhere. Similarly, being in touch with eminent film historians and authors and knowledgeable personalities such as Shri Arun Kumarji, Harmandir Singh ji and many others has added new dimensions to our lives. In a fast moving world with technological advances, catching up with matters of yesteryears is so soothing and heart fulfilling. When we talk of ‘good old days’, here is a platform that binds us together.

Coming back to the series on Mukesh, a sort of regret that will always remain with me is not having a post on the collaboration of Mukesh with composer Anil Biswas. People fond of Hindi music need no explanation to elaborate the influence of Anil Da and stepping stone in Mukesh’s singing career with reference to “Dil Jaltaa Hai To Jalne De”Of the 22 odd songs that Mukesh sang for Anil Da, all have been covered on the blog. Not to give a sense of false hope, I would like to clarify that the song that I am presenting here today has nothing to do with Mukesh.

Instead, I would like to write on Anil Biswas.

What can one write about the ‘Bhishm Pitamah’ of Hindi film music that has not been written earlier. A pioneer of playback singing in India and the composer who gave the initial breaks to singers like Parul Ghosh, Meena Kapoor, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Sudha Malhotra etc. He is credited with coaching Lata Mangeshkar with breath control techniques during recording of songs. Begum Akhtar’s timeless classics in the film ‘Roti’ (1942) were scored by him. Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, Suraiya et al have sung several of their classic songs under his composition. Lata having sung under various composers has a lot of numbers under his composition too and these songs will always remain on a higher plane. The fame achieved by the songs in ‘Kismet’ (1943) will be discussed and mentioned for a very long time.

There is enough material on the net on Anil Biswas, his life in Mumbai and Delhi, the many pioneering aspects of his compositions, how the mighty composers of later-years were his assistants earlier etc. And then there is also a detailed wikipage dedicated to him. However, I would like to draw the attention of readers to AK ji’s blog songsofyore.com.

Seventh of July, last week was the birth anniversary of Anil Da. Four years back, 2014 was his centenary year and the AK ji’s blog has a wide range of tributes and had dedicated an entire year on Anil Biswas starting with his daughter’s introductory post which one can find here. The eighth and last post on this special series can be found here.

The last post referred above also contains in its first paragraph links to the other six posts on Anil Biswas posted in his centenary year. I think die-hard fans of Anil Da can look no further than these posts to enjoy the complete range of his compositions for various artists and well himself.

Yes, he did sing for himself and I present here one such song composed and also sung by him.

I have no words to express my happiness in writing this post and introducing the song composed as well as sung by Anil Biswas to the blog. The immense gratitude to Atul ji and Sudhir ji for giving me yet another opportunity to write goes without saying.

This solo song is from the film ‘Ek Hi Raasta’ (1939). Only one of the potential twelve songs in the film has been posted on the blog so far and this is only the second song from the film to be posted.

To conclude the post, I once again congratulate Atul ji and Sudhir ji on this stupendous achievement of one decade of existence of the blog. There is a long way to go and many more milestones to be achieved. As we complete one decade of existence and march into the second, then to silver jubilee and beyond, the journey itself has become the destination for Atulites.

Long live the music of vintage and golden era, long live the passion of Atulites and long live the longevity of the blog. 🙂

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 2

On the occasion of completing 10 years of the blog on July 19, 2018, I heartily congratulate Atul ji and his musical bandwagon for attaining a very important milestone.

The blog started with the intent of posting at least one song a day. At the time of joining the blog in July 2011, I felt as to how Atul ji could make a commitment of posting one song a day. With family responsibilities, a transferable job with chances of getting posted at not-so-internet-friendly places, the target of one song a day was not so easy as it looks. To my pleasant surprise, the target of posting one song a day (actually more) on the blog has been, more or less, adhered to with a punctuality of more than 98 per cent. My assessment is that there may be, on average, not more than 10 days in a year when songs were not posted on the blog. But the team of regular (and irregular) contributors to the blog have more than compensated by an average posting of nearly 4 songs per day during the last 10 years.

I got to know from the special posts written by Atul ji on the occasions of the celebrations of blog’s anniversaries and milestones that during the initial period of the blog, the response was not as per his expectation. At that time, as I understand from his write-ups, Raja ji’s encouraging words inspired him not to lose heart and to do his karma. Later on, as I have witnessed, the visitors to the Blog increased manifold. Presently, the number of visitors to the Blog have crossed well over 10.5 million (more than one crore). Coupled with the total number of films and songs covered, this blog is the primus inter blog (first among the blogs) covering Hindi films and non-film songs.

I consider myself very fortunate to be associated with the musical journey of the blog for the last 7 years. Based on my experience, I would say that one of the greatest contributions of the blog has been the creation of interest in Hindi film songs of pre-golden era period. When I joined the blog in July 2011, I found it interesting, amongst others, Arun ji’s well-documented informative posts about the Hindi films and their artists, especially of the pre-golden era period. I do not think that information on many of the films and artists covered in such articles is available in any other blogs on Hindi films.

On the occasion of a decade of this musical Blog, I have chosen one of my favourite songs from Hindi films of post-2000 period. This song has been my inspirational song during my Himalayan treks. The song is from the film ‘Swades’ (2004). I am reproducing the full mukhda of the song to bring out the relevance of these inspirational lines in the context of the musical journey of the blog:

Apparently this song is also a ‘journey song’. The hero, Shahrukh Khan is on a journey in a self-driven caravan (camping vehicle) to locate his Nanny in one of the remote villages in India. On the way, he is joined by a faqeer (Makarand Deshpande) to help him find the correct direction to his destination (he has been intentionally misguided in the earlier part of the film 🙂 ). What starts as a song being heard from the radio on vehicle’s dash board, it becomes a voice over to Shahrukh Khan (playback by Udit Narayan) and Makarand Deshpande (playback by Kailash Kher). Hariharan’s voice is used at the start of the song for lines heard from the dash board, and a line in-between the song and towards the end. The song is written by Javed Akhtar which is set to music by AR Rahman. In an interview to ‘The Hindu’ which appeared in its December 25, 2010 issue, AR Rahman had revealed that the tune of this song was originally composed for one of the songs of ‘Lagaan’ (2001) but it was not used.

As stated earlier, some parts of the lyrics of the song are relevant to the journey of our musical caravan ‘driven’ by Atul ji in which many like-minded persons are fellow-travellers. Just like the faqeer in the film shows the direction of the destination to Shahrukh Khan in the picturisation of the song, Sudhir ji has been performing more or less, the same role in our musical caravan apart from providing other value additions. Other fellow travellers in our musical caravan have been contributing in their own ways to facilitate the blog with its intent.

Any journey through any form of conveyance has a final destination. But our musical caravan is a journey sans destination, although during the journey, there are intermediate destinations (milestones). So, for our musical caravan, journey becomes more important than the destination.

I have personally interacted with Atul ji only once and may be a couple of times through e-mails. But with my 7 years of association with blog, I feel that I know him through blog more than my interactions with him. Two lines of Allama Iqbal from his nazm, ‘Saaqi Nama’ perhaps sum up my impression about Atul ji in the context of his musical journey through the Blog:

He has seen many low and high (of this blog’s journey)
But for him, the (musical) journey is far preferable than any destination
