Blog Day : 3758 Post No. : 14728

Happy November to Atuldom

Start of the winters. Bangalore has suddenly turned colder post Navaratri and gearing up for the next most important festival in India – Deepawali.

‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan’ – released in 1978 – was produced and directed by Saawan Kumar Tak. The songs were written by Indeevar and music was by Usha Khanna. When I had heard the songs of this movie I had imagined Usha Khanna to be a rather young person. It was much later I became enlightened that she was also the music director for another set of songs which I love to hear – songs from ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ (1959). But that is not the purpose of this post.

The reason for this post is the small girl in the song who turns a year older today. She must have been all of 11 or 12 at the time of this movie. Movies used to take close to a year or two to complete those days not like present times when we hear of start to finish schedules and the movie quickly reaching the finish-line i.e. the cinema theatre. There were many reasons for the movies of the past taking time to complete and many of those reasons are not there nowadays. I don’t intend to go into the technique changes that film making has undergone.

So, the little girl of the song – Bulbul (Padmini Kolhapure) – is the pet of her parents and sisters. She is in love with her piano and loves to sing. And all is well in paradise till the father (Shreeram Lagoo) finds he is terribly ill and decides to go away from the family to undergo treatment. The mother (Nutan) also is aware of this but keeps it a secret from her daughters. Most of the movie is devoted to showing how the mother copes with the situation and how she has to also shield her daughter Bulbul from any traumatic news as she (Bulbul) too has a congenital heart problem- “hole in the heart” as the movie says. Further problems arise when one hospital ward attenant (TP Jain) starts blackmailing the mother about revealing all secrets to the children. The movie moves on to show how Nutan copes with a sick Bulbul, marriage of the elder daughter Basanti (Radhika Bartake) and a murder charge – Nutan murders TP Jain. So that is a fair idea about the movie.

Today’s song has Barkha (Aarthi Chopra) and Bulbul (Padmini) bullying their “hone waale Jeeja ji” (Vinod Mehra) who is sporting enough to agree to all the pre-wedding conditions that the saalis lay out. Suresh Wadkar, Anuradha Paudwal (who has turned 64 a few days back) and Dilraj Kaur are the playback singers.

So, the little Bulbul – Padmini Kolhapure – is a grown up lady now. She has a large number of movies in her repertoire where she has been a co-actor to most of stalwarts of Bollywood. She has been around since 1974, took a brief sabbatical after her son was born and returned to movies and television; this time playing roles of mother etc. to actors like Shahid Kapoor. And to think she is only as old as the Khans who are still playing the male lead.

Here is wishing the little Padmini a very Happy Birthday.

Song – Jeeja Ji Jeeja Ji Hone Waale Jija ji (Sajaan Bina Suhaagan) (1978) Singer – Anuradha Paudwal, Dilraj Kaur, Suresh Wadkar, Lyrics – Indeewar, MD – Usha Khanna
Anuradha Paudwal + Dilraj Kaur

Lyrics

jeeja ji jija ji
hone waale jija ji
jeeja ji jija ji
hone waale jija ji
shaadi ke phere hai saat
aur hamaari shartein saat
tumko ho manzoor agar
tabhi milega didi ka haath
ah jeeja ji jija ji
hone waale jija ji
jeeja ji jija ji
honewaale jija ji

pehli shart aapko bata dein
ke didi khaana nahi pakaayegi
arre is ki mujhe paravaah nahi
hotel se khaana manga loonga
o doosri ye shart hai hamaari
ke nain kisi se nahin ladaoge
arre deewana hoon
in nainon ka
in se main nain ladaoonga
saali ho saali ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali saali ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
jeeja ji jija ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waale jija ji (paa paa paa papa paa)

teesri ye shart hai hamaari
ke seedhe daftar se ghar aaoge
oye ghar ke siva
jaana kahaan
ghar me hi daftar bana loonga
aur chauthi shart hai hamaari
ki didi ko tum sari kamaai dogey
na rakhunga main
kuchh apne liye
sab kuch inhen
main de doonga
saali ho saali ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali saali ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
jeeja ji jija ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waale jija ji (paa paa paa papa paa)

aur panchavi shart to suniye
didi jab bhi maike me jaayegi
to jaldi waapas nahin bulaaoge
arre gharwaali bin
ghabaraaya dil
toh saali ji tumko bula loonga
chhathi shart to suniye
didi ki taarif mein hamesha
nayi kavita roz sunaoge
kavita meri
na bhayegi to
tulsi ke dohe suna doonga
saatvin ye shart hai hamaari
ki didi bachchee nahin khilayegi
arre didi ko kasht
na doonga kabhi
bachchon ko khud hi sambhaaloonga

meri bhi ek shart suno ji
are bas, bas, bas
shaadi zara honey to do
jo bhi kahogi main maanoonga
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
biwi ho biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)
hone waali biwi ji (paa paa paa papa paa)

khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain
khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain
barson ham kaanton pe chale hain
to phoolon tak aaye hain

khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain
barson ham kaanton pe chale hain
to phoolon tak aaye hain
khaamoshi jab had se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain

aap se hamne pyaar kiya
aur aap ko apna samjha hai
aap se hamne pyaar kiya
aur aap ko apna samjha hai
baaqi sab sansaar ko hamne
jhoothha sapna samjha hai
aankhon mein bhi aa base
dil mein bhi aap samaaye hain

barson ham kaanton pe chale hain
to phoolon tak aaye hain
khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain

aapne bhatke raahi ko
dil ka rasta dikhlaaya hai
aapne bhatke raahi ko
dil ka rasta dikhlaaya hai
duniya ne nafrat sikhlaai
aapne pyaar sikhaaya hai

aahon mein bhi aap sanam
dil pe bhi aap ke saaye hain
barson ham kaanton pe chale hain
to phoolon tak aaye hain
khaamoshi jab had se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain

duniya se rishta toote
par ye naata na todenge
duniya se rishta toote
par ye naata na todenge
furkat ke manhoos andhere
ab to ham ko chhodenge

khwaabon se mahlo mein
jab hamne deep jalaaye hain
barson ham kaanton pe chale hain
to phoolon tak aaye hain
khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain
khaamoshi jab hadd se badhi
to pyaar ke nagme gaaye hain

Hullo Atuldom

7th April 2018 is the 76th birthday of Ravi Kapoor- unbelievable. He has been around in the entertainment industry/ Bollywood since 1959 i.e. close to 60 years. WOW!!! That is a really long time. And we are fans of his and know him as JEETENDRA.

His first on-screen appearance was in V.Shantaram’s “Navrang” as Sandhya’s character’s double. Post that he got his first major break in Shantaram’s “Geet Gaya Pattharo ne”. 1967 saw him in diametrically different avatars in “Gunahon ka Devta” and “Farz”—and 51 years after “Farz” the epithet of “Jumping Jack” still reminds us of Jeetuji and his vigorous dancing prowess. The T-shirt and white shoes became his trademark and suited his lean frame. He has appeared in only about 200 films of which only 80 or so were made-in-south movies most of them remakes of successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. He was the preferred North-Indian star of that era as far as T. Rama Rao, L.V. Prasad, Rama Naidu and such other South Indian filmmakers were concerned. But there was another set of films that had him in completely subdued character as in “Parichay”, “Mere Humsafar”, “Khushboo”, “Kinara”, “Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke” and a long list of other movies.

He was loved by the audiences with any heroine he was paired right from Rajshree, Babita, Mala Sinha, Asha Parekh, Nanda and Mumtaz to the next set of ladies like Hema Malini, Rekha, Leena Chandavarkar, Reena Roy, Moushumi, and a few movies with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh and finally Sridevi and JayaPrada.

The above list looks like the roster of the heroines of the film industry. The only name that doesn’t feature in that list is that of Smita Patil as the only movie that featured the two, Smita was opposite to Dharamendra. And the list doesn’t name Rakhee, Jaya Bhadhuri (Bachchan), Bindiya Goswami, Radha, Bhanupriya, Madhavi, Meenakshi Seshadri, Madhuri Dixit etc. as they did only one or two movies each with Jeetuji.:) Phew! That is one long list. I am sure there are other heroines whose names are missing here. 🙂

As far as his acting style is concerned he must have been good to have lasted this long. I am sure people will say that he has survived on his dancing abilities alone, but then his movies with Gulzar at the helm didn’t have any dancing. He was a complete package of n actor who was comfortable with action, emotion, just standing and singing; dancing and singing.

His last silver screen appearance was in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” in the party song. He also produced a few movies, a business which is being looked after by his able daughter Ekta.

Today on his birthday I thought of all the possible songs and zeroed in on a song that is heard very often on the radio– mostly Vividh Bharathi, my staple source of film songs for years. It is from the 1976 released, L.V. Prasad produced “Udhar Ka Sindoor”. It was a remake of the Telugu movie “Manasullu Devudu”. The cast was headed by Jeetendra, Reena Roy and Asha Parekh with Prema Narayan, Asrani, Dheeraj Kumar, Manju Bansal (Asrani), Om Shivpuri and Urmila Bhat in supporting cast.

Just as a matter of trivia, here I feel like mentioning that Asha Parekh is the same age as Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and has co-starred as heroine to Jeetuji and RK but has been AB’s Bhabhi (in movies). Also, another point of interest which should be noted is Asha Parekh’s debut as heroine came in 1959 in “Dil Deke Dekho” and Jeetuji first appeared on-screen in 1959 in “Navrang” but as a character’s double.

Coming back to the movie “Udhar Ka Sindoor” (I sat through it to know what the movie was all about). It is a movie full of emotion- love for sister, love and gratitude towards foster-father; pinning to reunite with a lost sister; some drama on finding the sister, a groom for the foster-sister and then some action towards the end as by then the hero has become an inspector on the chase of a gang that forges currency. As it so happens the leader of the gang is the foster-brother who has to be pulled up for all the wrongs that he has committed including raping the lost-sister. That is why I said it was a movie full of EMOTIONS. And since there are two heroines, who happen to be sisters, there is a dose of sacrificing the hero for one another thrown in for good measure :). The hero is the lucky person as he gets to sing romantic songs with one sister and get married to the other and be worshipped by her since he married her despite her blindness.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rajesh Roshan was the music director.

Wishing all health and happiness to our “Jumping Jack” Jeetendra.

Song-O diljaani bol meri raani (Udhaar Ka Sindoor)(1976) Anuradha Paudwal, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Rakesh Roshan

Lyrics

sab kuchh hai kya suhaana
kho jaayen aaj hum-tum

tera saathi hai o jaan-e-jaanaa

hey bol meri raani
main teri kya hoon
tu hai mera dil
kitni haseen hai duniya
sab kuchh hai kya suhaana
kho jaayen aaj hum-tum
dekha kare zamaana
ho o o
