‘Maaya Memsaab’ (1993) was jointly produced by NFDC, Channel 4 Films, Ketan Mehta and others and was directed by Ketan Mehta. The cast included Deepa Sahi, Farooq Sheikh, Raj Babbar, Shah Rukh Khan, Shreeram Lagoo, Sudha Shivpuri, Paresh Rawal, Raghuvir Yadav, Satyadev Dube, Om Puri, Shrivallabh Vyas etc. The film’s story was based on a classic English novel, ‘Madame Bovary’ (1856) by Gustav Flaubert.

It was Shah Rukh Khan’s first Hindi film which he signed sometime in 1990. But before the completion of the film, Shah Rukh Khan’s other 5 films were already released, and he had already attained the status of a star actor. ‘Maya Memsaab’ was released on July 2, 1993. As of now, the film is available for viewing only on OTT platform where I watched the film. I was not able to fully understand as to what the director intended to convey with film’s unusual ending.

The story is about a young girl who is obsessed with romantic fantasies in relationships enjoying the luxuries of life. In her quest, she gets caught between the illusion (maaya) and the realities of life. In fact, she is incapable of distinguishing between her romantic ideals and the harsh realities of life which eventually leads her downfall. This film can fit into a genre of ‘Romantic Fantasies’. The gist of the film’s story is as under:

Maaya (Deepa Sahi) stays with her father (Shreeram Lagoo) in a palatial house with all luxuries. One day she meets Dr. Charan Das in her house who has come to treat her father following his accidental fall in the house. With his periodical visit to her house, Dr. Charan Das (Farooq Sheikh) and Maya fall in love and eventually get married.

With Dr Das socially committed to his vocation with a middle-class mindset, Maya finds herself alone in the house and soon the boredom creeps in her mind. The marriage does not meet her expectation of romantic fantasies.  This leads her to extra-marital affairs – first with Rudra Pratap Singh (Raj Babbar) and later with a young Lalit (Shah Rukh Khan). Her affairs with Rudra Pratap Singh is short-lived.

At first, both Maaya and Lalit have platonic liking for each other which, over a period of time, turns into a passionate love affair between them. She also indulges in buying expensive jewellery, branded clothes and going on luxurious vacations putting her into heavy debt. The creditors are threatening to auction her house for the recovery of money. She has to face the consequences of her actions alone. The discovery of her infidelity by her husband, Dr Das deprives her of the support from him.

At the end, she realises that neither marriage nor the adultery have resulted in the attainment of her fantasy of romance. She also now becomes aware that materialism does not bring the inner happiness. In her desperation for attaining happiness, she drinks a liquid from a bottle which is supposed to bring her happiness as per a road-side quack. The film ends with Maaya missing and police investigating her disappearance.

In the novel, the protagonist drinks poison and dies at end. However, Ketan Mehta seems to have left the disappearance of Maaya at the end of the film, to the audience for their own interpretations. Maya’s wandering through the barren landscape before she goes missing is a metaphor of her barren life. my understanding is that Ketan Mehta may be hinting through this film the philosophical side of the story. Maaya’s actions do indicate her independent viewpoints for the fulfillment of her romantic fantasies (her idealistic romance) which will make her happy. But at the end, she finds all these are illusions (maaya) as materialism and infidelity have failed to give her happiness.

‘Maaya Memsaab’ (1993) has six songs of which one song has three versions. All the songs have been written by Gulzar which have been set to music by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. One song has already been covered in the Blog. All the songs of the film are very melodious. It was, therefore, difficult for me to choose one song for this article. Finally, I have zeroed on a multiple version song, “Ek Haseen Nigaah Ka Dil Pe Saaya Hai”.  I have selected this song for its visually impressive cinematic presentation. The song’s melody and orchestration match with the mood and atmosphere of Maaya’s journey of romantic fantasies.

The song has three versions. Version-I song rendered by Kumar Shanu has only two stanzas which is picturised on Farooque Shaikh and Deepa Sahi as a background song. Version-II is picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and Deepa Sahi. Both Versions-I and II songs depict the romantic fantasies of Maaya (Deepa Sahi) in her imaginations. Version-III song is Lata Mangeshkar’s solo which I did not find in the film.

One may observe in Version-II of the song that there is a change in tune in  the first two lines of second antara of the song which is different from the tune of the first antara. However, afterwards, the tune of first antara is retained. This is called ‘sanchaari’ in musical parlance. Rabindranath Tagore is said to have used ‘sanchaari’ in some of his compositions. Most of the music directors from Bengal are fond of using ‘sanchaari’. Salil Chowdhury has used ‘sanchaari’ in some of his Hindi film songs like in second antara of  O Sajnaa Barkha Bahaar Aayi from ‘Parakh’ (1960).

As per Hindu mythology, the Sun god is travelling in the sky on a chariot pulled by seven horses. After pulling the chariot for a long time, the six horses are tired. It is the seventh horse who remains and continues to pull the chariot signifying it to be the horse of dreams and aspirations for the future. In 1952, Dr Dharamvir Bharati published his novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’. I read the novella in full which is available online. The novella is written in narration style in which the protagonist, Manik Mulla narrates to his three friends, three separate romance stories relating to three girls. What is of interest is that Manik Mulla is not only the narrator of the stories, but he is also the characters in all the three stories who loves these three girls at different points of time in his life. As Agyeya said in his foreword to the novella, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’ is not the one story comprising three stories, but three stories constituting one story. The author, in his introduction, has revealed that during his early period of writing, he was influenced by Marxist objectives rather than hardcore Marxism. In this novella, some indications of that objectives can be inferred.  The full novella in Hindi can be read here.

After four decades since the novella was published, Shyam Benegal adapted its story in toto to make a film by the same name, ‘Suraj Ka Saatvan Ghoda’ (1993). When Shyam Benegal approached Dr Bharati for his permission to adapt his novella into a feature film, he gave permission without any hesitation. However, some well-wishers of Dharmvir Bharti cautioned him about some filmmakers deviating from the literature. But Dharmvir Bharti brushed aside their concern by telling them that he has entrusted his work to Shyam Benegal and not just any filmmaker and he has immense faith in him. He also did not go through the screenplay written by Shama Zaidi. [Source: The Hindu, 17/09/2017].

The film was produced by NDFC and Doordarshan and was directed by Shyam Benegal. The cast included Rajit Kapur, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Pallavi Joshi, Neena Gupta, Amrish Puri, Anang Desai, Riju Bajaj, Lalit Tiwari, Ila Arun, Raghuveer Yadav, Ravi Jhankal, Suresh Bhagwat, KK Raina, Virendra Saxena, Shashibala Sahay, Mohini Sharma etc.

The three stories pertain to three girls. First, Jamuna (Rajeshwari Sachdev) who has been brought up in a middle-class family. Second, Leela/Lily (Pallavi Joshi), who belongs to an upper-middle class family and is educated, strong and independent-minded. The third girl, Sati (Neena Gupta), a destitute brought up by an ex-army man since her childhood. Her origin is from a gypsy family. Manik Mulla (Rajit Kapur) loves all the three girls at different points of time but love does not fructify. The tragedy is that Manik Mulla witnesses the marriage ceremonies of Jamuna and Lily and becomes a moot spectator to Sati being dragged out of his house where she has come to him for shelter. Although the three stories are different, they get intertwined as some characters are common in all the three stories and they are based in the same village.

The gist of the film’s story is as under:

The film starts with Manik Mulla, a railway employee serving watermelons to his three friends, Shyam (Raghuveer Yadav), Omkar (Siraj Ahmed) and Prakash (Rakesh Dhar) who normally assemble in his house in a series of afternoons to hear love stories from him. After the conclusion of each story, his three friends critically evaluate the stories, and he responds to their queries pertaining to the story.

The first story is that of Jamuna who is a school dropout. She is in  love with her neighbor, Tanna (Riju Bajaj). At the same time, she has friendly disposition towards another neighbor, Manik Mulla who has some sort of platonic love for her but cannot express explicitly. Jamuna could not marry Tanna because of his cowardliness as he had no guts to defy his father, Maheshwar Dalal (Amrish Puri) who is money minded (dowry) and also a womanizer. She tells her disappointment to Manik Mulla and meets him almost every day. Eventually,  Jamuna’s mother gets her married to an old landlord (Suresh Bhagwat) who is a widower with lot of wealth. But he dies within a short time. Jamuna finds solace in having inherited a good financial security apart from having extra-marital relationship with a horse-cart man, Ramdhari (Ravi Jhankal).

The second story is that of Leela/Lily, the only daughter of a widowed mother (Ila Arun).  She has a wealthy background. Manik Mulla loves Lily which she reciprocates. But her widow-mother gets Lily married to Tanna against her wish. Tanna’s father, Maheshwar Dalal sees a double opportunity in this marriage. He sees a chance to flirt with Lily’s widow-mother and also her wealth which Lily will eventually inherit. However, Lily is not happy with this marriage as she does not find her husband in the same intellectual level as she is.  After Lily becomes pregnant, she leaves her husband permanently and shift to her mother’s house by saying that she has got everything, and she does not need a man.

The third story is of Sati who belongs to the lower strata of the society. She  earns a living by making soap. She genuinely loves Manik Mulla. His elder brother (KK Raina) does not like Manik’s liaison with her and threatens him to stop his college studies and get him employed. Maheshwar Dalal has an eye on Sati with bad intentions. He showers monetary benefit on her guardian, Chaman Thakur and makes him drunk to kidnap Sati. She runs away to Manik Mulla’s house to take shelter to save herself from the clutches of Maheshwar Dalal and Chaman Thakur. Afraid of his elder brother, Manik Mulla remains a moot spectator when Sati is being dragged out of his house by Maheshwar Dalal and Chaman Thakur. Sati is raped and  probably killed by Maheshwar Dalal.

After the third story, Manik Mulla becomes emotional, and he tells his friends that he would not narrate any more stories. Somewhere in his conscious he felt that had he not betrayed Sati, she could have been saved. At the end of the film, the protagonist says that ‘the love which does not contribute to social progress and personal development is not love’.

This is one of those few films where watching the film will give more satisfaction than reading the story and reviews. For, the story switches between the protagonist narrations depicted on the screen and the scenes where protagonist and his friends discuss among themselves, the pros and cons of each story. Each main characters in the story have more than one layer of their personality which is hard to bring out in the reviews.

I have watched almost all the feature films directed by Shyam Benegal but, in my view, the film under discussion is his cult classic masterpiece though the film flopped miserably at the box office. I never thought that storytelling aspects in the novella could be cinematically presented so effectively as if I was refreshing the novella on the screen. The film keeps the viewers engrossed because at the end of the film, one gets confused whether the stories narrated by the protagonist is fiction or real or partly fiction and partly real. Perhaps, Dharmvir Bharati has left the conclusion to the readers of his novella and so also Shyam Benegal to the viewers of the film.

This was Rajit Kapur’s debut film as an actor and he has given an excellent performance as Manik Mulla where he has different layers of characters in each story. All the three ‘heroines’, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Pallavi Joshi and Neena Gupta have maintained their reputation as the great actors of mid/parallel cinema. I liked the non-maniac and soft villainous role of Amrish Puri in this film. The film won the National Film Award for the best feature film in Hindi in 1993.

The film has only two songs, one of which I am presenting here today. The song is “Ye Shaamen Sab Ki Sab Shaamen” which is the first song from the film to appear on the Blog.  The song written by Vasant Dev is rendered by Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy and is set to music by Vanraj Bhatia. The song is picturised on Rajit Kapur and Pallavi Joshi. The second part of the first stanza of the song gets played again in the background when Manik Mulla (Rajit Kapur) witnesses his beloved, Lily (Pallavi Joshi) getting married to Tanna (Riju Bajaj). The video clip contains both the parts.

Song – Ye Shaamen, Sab Ki Sab Shaamen (Suraj Ka Saatwan Ghoda) (1993) Singer – Udit Narayan, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Lyrics – Vasant Dev, MD – Vanraj Bhatia
Udit Narayan + Kavitha Krishnamurthy

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Nargis-1993’. This movie seems to be an obscure or un-released movie of its time. I was not aware of this movie or its songs. But I got to listen to today’s song on ‘Vividh Bharati’ around two years back and since then I was longing to share it on the blog. When I listened to this song first I was not aware of the name of the movie it was from. It was only later when I looked for the details of its movie and other songs that I became aware of the name of the movie.

The first and the foremost thing that I got excited about this song was the composition which I liked and its singing by Lata Mangeshkar. I was surprised to have never come across this song during all these years since it was produced.

Secondly the name of this movie is missing from the list of Atul ji’s ‘Yearwise Review of Lata Mangeshkar HF Songs’. I checked the post for this year ‘1993’ again and again and also checked the posts for the years ‘1994’ and ‘1992’ to see if this movie name is there if was released earlier or later. But ‘Hindi Filmography-Vol-1 (1986-2000)’ mentions this movie of the year ‘1993’. (So we need to add this movie to this list also).

“Nargis-1993” was directed by Khalid Mohammad for ‘Filmtech, Bombay. Khalid Mohammad was also the producer of this movie.

This movie had Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Zeba, Manzoor Ali, Dinesh Hingoo, Neelam, Arun Bakshi, Anant Mahadevan, Sulbha Deshpande, Sudhir Dalvi, Nandita Thakur, Rabia, Kamal Deep, Chandani, Amjad Khan and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.04.1993.

According to the information available online this movie has the following songs in it.

S.No. Song Title Singer
01 Arey tu pawan basanti Lata Mangeshkar
02 Main kaise kahoon jaaneman Jagjit Singh
03 Kisi aashiyaane mein -1 Lata Mangeshkar
04 Dono ke dil hain majboor pyaar se Jagjit Singh, Lata Mangeshkar
05 O jaane jaana qurbaana Asha Bhonsle, Naseeruddin Shah
06 Kaahe ab ki ae bahaar Lata Mangeshkar
07 Kisi aashiyaane mein -2 Shweta – I

From the above table we can see that the voice Lata Mangeshkar featured in four songs of this movie – three solo songs – and one duet.

Today’s song is a solo song which we are going to listen to and enjoy.

The lyrics for today’s song and all the other songs of this movie have been written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
Music is composed by Basu Chakravarty (of Basu-Manohari).

With the today’s song this movie ‘Nargis-1993’ makes his debut on the blog. And it joins the movie with same title i.e. ‘Nargis-1946’ on the blog.

Over to the song now …..

Hullo Atuldom

The ‘Chaturthi’ after the Amavasya of the month of Bhadrapada is the date on which we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayaka Chaturthi (as it is called in South India). Bhadrapada being the sixth month of the Hindu calendar, Chaturthi being the fourth day after the New Moon (Amavasya) or the Full Moon (Purnima). This year i.e. 2022 this date corresponded to 30th August of the gregorian calendar. Here I would like to say that Ganesh Chaturthi happens to be the celebration of the God’s birth.

Devotees of The Elephant-headed god, Shri Ganesha, bring home clay idols of the Lord, do pooja over one & half, three, five or ten days. People of Maharashtra, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka etc (I don’t know about other parts of the country) also bring home idols of the mother- goddess in the form of ‘Gauri’ and worship the mother & son together. A variety of prasads are offered to the Lord and people feel that some relative or family member has come over to stay with them. At the end of the festivities (depending on the period that the individual family follows) these clay idols are taken for immersion in nearby waterbodies.

There are public (Sarvajanik) groups also that have pandals (shamianas), across cities not only in India but where ever Indians stay, that install idols some of which are very tall. Normally these idols are worshipped over the full 10-day period and then taken for immersion with pomp accompanied by dance and music. This form of Sarvajanik celebration of the festival was started during India’s freedom struggle and was the brain-child of Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

All the processions are accompanied with cries of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudcha Varshi Lavkar ya” meaning “Ganpati Bappa, please come again next year as soon as possible.” There is a tale about “Morya” following “Ganpati Bappa”, which I expect our knowledgeable followers/readers to throw light on.

The idols are worshipped one last time, arathis are offered, prasads are distributed before immersing in the waterbody. In big cities, we can see queues of idols awaiting their turn for immersion, there are various television channels that show the whole event live.

Today (9 september 2022) is that day when the idols are taken for immersion. Today is “Anant Chaturdashi”. After a gap of two years, thousands of devotees are on the roads, taking their idols for immersion.

On this occasion let us have a song where Madhuri Dixit is bidding Goodbye to her Ganpati Bappa. She sings in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar a song composed by Rajesh Roshan. What we see Madhuri do in the song is something that happens in many apartments i.e. placing the family’s Ganesh idol in the truck carrying a Sarvajanik Ganesh idol.

The song is from the 1993 release “Aansoo Bane Angaarey”. The movie was directed by Mehul Kumar, produced by J.K. Verma, and Indeevar, Dev Kohli & Payam Sayeedi were the songwriters. Madhuri Dixit played a double role and Jeetendra & Deepak Tijori were romantically paired opposite her. Bindu, Archana Puran Singh, Aruna Irani, Kiran Kumar, Anupam Kher, Prem Chopra, Tiku Talsania etc formed rest of the cast.

A stalwart of many talents, a multi faceted personality who was single handedly responsible for bringing to life the endeavors of Assamese cinema, bringing international recognition to the age old music and culture of far eastern India.

Remembering Dr Bhupen Hazrika on the anniversary of his birth – he would have been 96 today. He is known as ‘Shudha Kontho’ – the one with the nectar of amrit (shudha, sudha) in his throat.

He was born in Sadiya, Assam in 1926. Even as a child, his musical and singing talents were evident. In 1939, at the tender age of 12, he recorded his first song for the Assamese talkie film ‘Indramalati’ (1939). His traveled to faraway Benaras for his education (BA and MA degrees in Political Science, 1944 and 1946), and then to the US for his PhD to New York (Columbia University, 1952). However, the association that was established in childhood would be sustained and strengthened over the years.

He became recognized as a renowned film maker in the east. As a renowned musician, and a multi lingual lyricist and vocalist, he was the representative face of the music and culture of that region. And more than that, he was the cultural ambassador of India to the rest of the world.

Many awards and accolades came to him throughout his illustrious career, most notable being the Sangeet Natak Academy award in 1987, Dadasaheb Phalke lifetime achievement award in 1993, and the Padma Bhushan in 2001. He was the president of the Sangeet Natak Academy from 1999 to 2004. As a creator of films and film music, he has been conferred many honors by film associations and critics associations in the US, Japan, Bangladesh, besides India.

Bhupen Hazarika breathed his last on 5th November, 2011.

‘Rudaali’, a 1993 production by the feminist film maker and director, Kalpana Lajmi, is a story about the life and tribulations of Shanichari (Dimple Kapadia), a poor woman, abandoned by her own family as a child, and later in life, abandoned by the man whom she loves. A caustic and a weather beaten personality, her life is dogged by one misfortune after another. But the character within is stronger than steel, and she faces the world without a tear in her eye. The strength of her resolve is at conflict with her profession of a mourning woman, rudaali, in the villages of interior Rajasthan. The film is a powerful commentary on the traditional status of women in rural India. The film itself, and the portrayal if the central character by Dimple Kapadia, has won many awards and recognitions, both national and international.

The lyrics of this film are penned by Gulzar, and the haunting music is from the mind of Bhupen Hazarika. This particular song is rendered both by Bhupen Hazarika and Lata Mangeshkar. The deep baritone voice of Bhupen Hazarika so strongly brings to life the powerful verses.

The song tells about the personal sorrows and tribulations of the protagonist – Shanichari, a rudaali woman in rural Rajasthan. Bhupen Hazarika version plays in the background, as we the entire life of Shanichari crumbling and wasted around her. We see her sitting next to her husband’s funeral pyre, slowly removing all her jewellery and adornments. Later in the song, she is face to face with Raj Babbar, her lover, who has also abandoned her. The words are so evocative and portray the sadness that reigns inside her. “Teri Oonchi Ataari, Maine Pankh Liye Katvaaye” – your adobe is at such a height, and the miserable me has shorn off her wings.

A deeply moving experience about life itself.

Song – Dil Hoom Hoom Kare Ghabraaye  (Rudaali) (1993) Singer – Bhupen Hazaarika, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Gulzar, MD – Bhupen Hazarika

Bhupen Hazarika version

Hullo Atuldom

Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born on 1st July 1938 to a father who wanted the son to be a wrestler. The obedient son did go to the Akhada and trained with his father along with learning music and practising at a friend’s home.

Pt. Hariji has said once, and I quote, “he was not very good at wrestling but the training had helped him build up strength and stamina which has helped him play the bansuri (flute) to this day.”

Initially he was learning vocal music but switched to playing the flute and Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi was his guru. After a few years, Annapurna Devi was his guide and that is when he turned to playing the flute left-handed. Panditji is the recipient of numerous awards including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. He has collaborated with Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma since the 60s with albums like “Call of the Valley”. The Shiv-Hari combo gave music to a few Hindi films too, most of them from YashRaj Films.

Today we are wishing Panditji on turning 84 a few days back with a composition that is from Yash Chopra directed, Firoz A Nadiadwala produced and May 1993 released “Parampara”.

Much of the movie was shot in the famous boarding school of Ajmer -Mayo College. It starred Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher as the seniors. Raveena Tandon, Neelam Kothari, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan (this was his debut in Hindi films) formed the young brigade. Ashwini Bhave and Ramya Krishnan were cast as Vinod Khanna’s wives – one chosen by him and the other by his father Sunil Dutt. Saif and Aamir were VK’s children who are educated in a boarding school where they sing today’s song. Anand Bakshi wrote the songs.

This is a song which has Amit Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar singing for the collegiates who are enjoying after “lights out” (I have seen this movie a long time back, hope I am correct?)

3rd July a very important date in the life of a singer who has carried the legacy of his family, in HFM. His uncle began as an actor who used to sing his own songs; most of which are popular to this date. I am speaking of the Ganguly family and the uncle I spoke of was Ashok Kumar. 3rd July happens to be the birthdate of Amit Kumar who was born into the Ganguly Family as son of Kishore Kumar (a singer-actor in his own league) and Ruma (who was also an actor-singer).

There are singers and people connected with the arts in Ruma’s lineage too -Ruma’s mother was also a singer. It is hardly surprising that Amit Kumar took to singing early in life. There are interviews available in public Domain where Amit Kumar has spoken about how he used to sing at Durga Pooja pandals and how his mother complained to his ‘Baba’ etc. Amit Kumar has also spoken about how his father “Baba” took him to Bombay (Mumbai back then) and how he began his journey. One thing about Amit Kumar is that he never tried to ape his father. His voice was distinct and we have a few duets of Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar where the distinction is obvious (two of these are on the blog.)

We have had 58 Amit Kumar songs (only) on the blog. The categories listed on the right hand side of the blog show that he has had duets with all possible male and female playback singers. We also have songs (on the blog) where he has appeared on-screen. Today- 3rd July – we wish Amit Kumar on turning 70.

What!!!! did I say 70!!!! Unbelievable. He is still so youthful when we see him on the various reality shows as judge. He is his father’s biggest fan. And we are his fans. A very Very Happy Birthday Amitda.

Belated Wishes to Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia on turning an year older.

With this Shiv-Hari song from “Parampara” which makes its debut on the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

March 7th sees Anupam Kher, the versatile actor, turn a year older. He has played characters beyond his calendar age in numerous films. He has played the archetypal villain with as much finesse as serious supporting roles. He has also tried playing characters which are comic but of course some of these have been over-the-top and mostly making faces, using odd hair-get-ups etc. would be used to create comic effect. But I think we can excuse this fine actor of these excesses as he used to balance them by doing roles as in “Daddy” (1989), Utsav (1984), Karma (1986), Rao Saheb (1985), Kaash (1987), Zevar etc.

He played Shahrukh Khan’s son-friendly father in a few movies, as also father to Salman Khan and other heroes of the 90s. But I have never been able to get over the fact that he played father to Anil Kapoor in one movie and grandfather in the next movie. Similarly, he has played friend, jija, father, grandfather etc to Rishi Kapoor. I can go on and on about the various actors with whom he played such characters. All of these just show the love this man has towards all things connected with films and movie making.

He turned producer in 2000 with “Bariwali” which was in Bengali and had his wife Kirron Kher play a lonely, sad, unfortunate, middle-aged woman. He directed ‘Om Jai Jagdish” in 2002. Additionally he has appeared in a few international television serials, and films. He has also been seen in Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi films.

His brother Raju Kher is an actor as also his wife and her son (his step-son) Sikandar Kher are actors.

This was a song that I posted in 2020 on Anupamji’s birthday. There are so many choices available to go with today’s post. I have zeroed in on a song where we have Rishi Kapoor playing Anupam Kher’s ‘chela’ reminding us of Joy Mukherjee and I.S Johar in “Shaagird”.

This movie “Shreemaan Aashique” (1993) was directed by Deepak Anand and produced by Shakeel Noorani. The film starred Urmila Matondkar, Rishi Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Bindu, Reema Lagoo, Mehmood, Annu Kapoor etc. Music was by Nadeem-Shravan, Sameer and Noor Kaskar (never heard this name before) were the lyricists. I recently discovered that Anupam Kher has sung a few songs in movies and today’s song is one of them. The other voice in the song is Ahmed Mirza (never heard this name too).

I apologize to all the purists in subjecting them to this song, but we shall see the positive side that this actor didn’t mind making himself a buffoon too.
Wishing Anupam Kher health and happiness

Hullo Atuldom

The title-cards of movies that he was present in always billed him as “And Pran”.

His was the character needed to bring out the hero in Raj-Dilip-Dev, Dharam-Rajendra-Sunil. Shammi Kapoor fooled him in “Kashmir Ki Kali”, “Bluffmaster” etc’ Kishore Kumar made him run after him in “Half Ticket”. He was unhappily-married to the girl Manoj Kumar loved in “Do Badan”.

He was a strict-rich-unbending father to Rishi Kapoor in “Bobby”. A friend to Ashok Kumar in reel and real life, they came together on-screen for the first time in “Afsana” (1951). {I hope this is correct!!! In-house encyclopediaji and other knowledgeable Atulites need to confirm this}.

He was seen along side Ashok Kumar in close to 27 movies till 1987 when Ashok Kumar played Pran’s (Thakur Satyaprakash) trusted driver, Man-Friday etc. in the Prayag Raj directed “Hifazat”. (Hope I am right here, have seen this film a long time back on television).

His association with Manoj Kumar has material for a post on its own, but I feel like mentioning that it was Manoj Kumar who thought that Pransaab (as the industry addressed him) will be able to do justice to the character of Malangbaba in “Upkaar”. The last time Pransaab acted in a Manoj Kumar was “Jai Hind” in 1999.

Additionally Pransaab was instrumental in making characters of Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra and various other actors of the 70s and 80s standout in numerous films.

It is very difficult to write a post about this lovable artiste, without touching on the extra touch, that he added to all his characters so that no-two villains looked same or had similar traits. He looked menacing blowing smoke-rings holding his pipe/cigar/cigarette in different styles. The mustache of Raka in ‘Jis desh mein Ganga behte hain” was different from the one he sported in “Ram aur Shyam”. If Helen experimented with her outfits for her dance numbers, Pransaab was known to play around his hair styles. I am sure that the readers will feel that I am a huge fan of this actor who was awarded the “Villain of the Millenium” by Stardust in 2000, the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2013.

Yes, I loved to see this actor in action. I found him adorable. There is a whole list of songs filmed on this actor and the following are the ones I loved him most in.

Song Movie (Year) Date posted Singer
Daaru ki bottle mein saahab paani bharta hai Majboor (1974) 14 Nov 2008 Kishore Kumar
Aake seekhi lagi Half Ticket (1962) 8 Feb 2009 Kishore Kumar, Pran
Kasme waade pyaar wafa waahe hain waadon ka kya Upkaar (1967) 1 March 2009 Manna Dey
Dil ki umangen hain jawaan Munimjee(194) 27 April 2009 Hemant Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Pran
Raaz ki baat keh doon to jaane mehfi mein phir kya ho Dharma (1973) 21 May 2009 Asha Bhonsle, Rafi
Do bechaare bina sahaare Victoria number 203 (1971) 10 March 2011 Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar
Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi Zanjeer (1973) 12 February 2012 Manna Dey
Mujhse nazren milaane ki jurrat na kar Maan Gaye Ustaad (1981) 26 November 2012 Rafi, Manna Dey
Mera ek sawaal hai sawaal ka jawaab do Maan Gaye Ustaad (1981) 12 February 2018 Rafi, Chandrani Mukherjee, Dilraj Kaur
Aji sunte ho Raja Aur Rana (1983) 12 February 2019 Mahesh Kumar, Kishore Kumar
Shaam suhaani aayi khushiyaan banke pehli baar Zinda Dil (1975) 12 February 2020 Lata, Shailendra Singh, Mahendra Kapoor

The list is not complete, there are more songs where either he is simply standing and smiling benevolently or menacingly (depending on the era of the song). I remember a song from the 90s where he is seen partying on his wedding anniversary with Asha Parekh. Everytime I see this song I think of Pran and Asha Parekh from all those movies of the 60s when he played the spoke in her love-life with the hero of those films:- “Jab Pyaar kisise hota hai”, “Love In Tokyo”, “Do Badan”, and the list is long here too. What more does one expect when a person has a career starting from 1940 and going on till 2007.

Thinking of this actor today on his 102nd birth anniversary with the party song that I mentioned in the previous paragraph. The movie is the 1993 release “Bhagyawan” which had Govinda play the son of Asha Parekh & Pran, with Juhi Chawla, Ranjeet, Aruna Irani, Kirti Kumar (Govinda’s real-life brother), Johnny Lever etc forming the rest of the cast. The movie was a typical family drama. It had songs written by Sameer, M G Hashmat, and Hasrat Jaipuri. Today’s song is sung by Abhijeet. Anand Milind were the music directors of this film.

I take this as the party to celebrate two other occasions- birthday of one Atulite and wedding anniversary of another Atulite (sirf hint hi kaafi hai).
Wishing all the best to both the Atulites.

Hullo Atuldom

Time for a yearly roundup!!!! 2021 coming to a close. 2022 just a sunrise away. Hope we have different experiences in 2022, experiences that make us glad and bring a smile to our lips which stays the whole year.

I am sure Atulji or Sudhirji or one of the other blog-contributors, who have the patience to go through the statistics etc., will give us a table of how many new movies debuted on the blog in 2021, and other related info about which date saw how many posts etc. But the best that happened this year, IMO, is the series that Atulji undertook to enlist all the movies, music directors etc that Lata Mangeshkar was associated with in her looonnngg career.

On the way out of 2021 here is a song from the 1993 release “Shatranj”. A movie that I saw at the time of its release on cable TV, before the Satellite TV Tsunami hit us. It was produced by Arun S. Thakur, directed by Aziz Sejawal, had music by Anand Milind, and Sameer was the lyricist. S P Balasubramaniam, Abhijeet, Udit Narayan, Jolly Mukherjee, Kumar Sanu, Sudesh Bhonsle, Jayshree (popular as Bombay Jayshri in classical music circles), Poornima, Sadhana Sargam (i.e. all the good singers of the 90s) were used in the movie.

Kadar Khan was the dialogue writer of the movie which begins like “Chalti ka Naam Gaadi” (CKNG) which means we have three brothers -bachelors- who are reared by the eldest brother Dharamraj (Kadar Khan), the other two brothers being Dino and Dinky (Jackie and Mithun). The eldest brother has a problem with the female gender of the populace (like Ashok Kumar in CKNG), the other two don’t have any such issues and Renu & Radha (Divya Bharaati and Juhi Chawla) are their girl friends. Then there is a female called Rosie (Jamuna who appeared in a few films in the 80s and 90s, not much is known about her) who is shown to like the elder brother Dharamraj since childhood (Sarfaraz Khan, Kadar Khan’s own son played the younger Dharamraj). The reason for Dharamraj’s problem with females is shown as his step-mother who was nasty to him and his brothers as children.

The story has the necessary villain in the character of Prajapati (Kiran Kumar) the manager to the brothers’ father’s (Vikas Anand) business and also his killer. He is cheating the brothers’s step-mother and step-brother (Shakti Kapoor) and using their business as a front for his illegal activities (what else). The brothers have some misunderstandings with Dharamraj when Renu & Radha enter their lives, which get resolved; then the hard-feelings towards the step-family also is sorted out and the cause of all the problems in their lives (Prajapati) is brought to his logical end. And then “The End”.

Oh I forgot to mention a few more tributes that the movie paid to CKNG. CKNG had ‘Mohan Garage’ here the brothers have ‘Dharam Garage’. There was a ‘car’ in CKNG even this movie had a ‘car’ important to the story. CKNG begins with a song on the pet car, this one too begins with a song on the car. Additionally the brothers have a pet Monkey/ Chimpanzee. So let us have the movie debuting on the blog with the film-opening song that shows us the bonding between the brothers. This song is in the voices of SPB, Abhijeet and Udit Narayan.

There used to be a show called ‘Superhit Muqabla’ on Doordarshan Metro of those years (28 years back) which was on the lines of the legendary Binaca Geetmala. The show used to retire songs from the list of popular songs, which were complied based on vinyl records and cassette sales & and viewership of the show as such, after a 25 week run to make place for newer songs, very much like Binaca Geetmala. And songs of “Shatranj” (1993) were on this show for many weeks.

With this song we also say thank you to the entertainer Kadar Khan who left us today, in 2018, in Canada, where he was staying with his sons following his retirement from Bollywood. His last release was ‘Hogaya Dimaagh ka Dahi” in 2015 October (after a gap of seven years when ‘Mehbooba’ and ‘Deshdrohi’ released). He was a recipient of three Filmfare awards viz:

Best Dialogue for “Meri Awaz Suno” in 1982.

Best Comedian for “Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri” in 1991.

Best Dialogue (again) for “Angaar” in 1993.

He was conferred the Padma Shri, posthumously in 2019 by the Government of India.

He was 81 when he passed away.
