We are all fans of someone or other. We also find that our idols are fans of talents from their growing up years, whom they used to idolize & continue to do so. I can enumerate many examples to show this- {1} Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Shahrukh Khan etc have a huge fan following but, at various occasions they have confessed that seeing Dilip Kumar on-screen is what made them want to be become actors. {2} Dilip Kumar & Dev Anand are said to have been inspired by Ashok Kumar. {4} Waheeda Rehman’s is another case in point – her fangirl moment came when she got to face the camera alongside Dev Anand for ‘C.I.D’ (1956).

Do we need more examples? SP Balasubramaniam was a huge fan of the legend Mohd. Rafi – like the rest of the followers of Indian Film Music. SPB (he used to be addressed as SPB in addition to being called Balu Sir) himself was a singer with a huge fan following. Balu Sir has mentioned ‘N’ number of times how he used to be moved to tears when he heard some of Rafi Saab’s songs. I am sure he must have felt privileged when he got to sing songs of similar moods & genres. Today’s song is one such song i.e. one that has somber feelings.

1981 was the year that the audiences of Hindi films heard the voice of SP Balasubramaniam for the first time in ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (EDKL); which had him share the recording room with another of his own favorite singers- Lata Mangeshkar & he was never tired about relating how he felt on that day. Following the success of ‘EDKL’ his voice was used for a few hundred songs in Hindi. When Salman Khan got successful with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ (1989) part of it was because he sang in Balu Sir’s voice. For most of the early part of the 1990s Salman Khan sang in Balu Sir’s voice. In the period from 1981 to 1989 SPB’s voice was used for other actors too, in addition to singing for Kamal Haasan who was making his way into Hindi films.

‘Ek Hi Bhool’ (EHB) also released in 1981, a few months after ‘EDKL’. It had Rekha (Sadhana) & Jeetendra (Ramkumar) playing a couple who have separated (not divorced) because of some misunderstandings. This leads to Sadhana taking up a job to look after the needs of the family which, now, includes her son (who is born post the separation). It is an Indian cinema, so naturally when the heroine gets a new ‘boss’ it has to be her estranged  husband. And he will still be in love with his wife who will try her level-best to avoid him. Then there will be the usual office- gossip involving the two {remember, it had happened with Mala Sinha & Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Sanjog’ (1972)}. Plus, we have Ramkumar who tries to get back with Sadhana using all kinds of tactics including wooing the son with gifts etc. That means ‘EHB’ had all the ingredients of a family drama with an office Casanova (Mazhar Khan) thrown in for good measure.

The film was directed by T Rama Rao, produced by A Purnachandra Rao & had story by K Bhagyaraj. EHB was the remake of Bhagyaraj’s Tamil ‘Mouna Geethangal’ (‘Silent Melodies’ which also released in 1981). Songs of ‘EHB’ were written by Anand Bakshi & tuned by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Playback singers used were SP Balasubramaniam, Asha Bhonsle & Rajeshwari who is Laxmikant’s daughter.

We are remembering Balu Sir on his death anniversary. He passed away on this date in 2020 due to Covid19 related respiratory complications.

This song reminds me of Rafi Saab’s “Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halaat Pe Rona Aaya” & “Hai Duniya Usi Ki Zamaana Usi Ka“.

Hullo Atuldom

“Maine Pyaar Kiya” (MPK 1989) was from the Rajshri Productions stable. It was directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, story by S.M.Ahale, and screenplay and dialogues were by Sooraj Barjatya. Asad Bhopali and Dev Kohli were the lyricists. Vijay Patil (a.k.a Raamlaxman) was the music director. Bhagyashree made her debut in this movie and it was Salman Khan’s first as a hero (he was present in “Biwi Ho To Aisi” in a supporting role before this). Aloknath, Rajeev Verma, Mohnish Behl, Reema Lagoo, Ajeet Vachani, Harish Patel, Huma Khan, Dilip Joshi, and Laxmikant Berde formed the supporting cast. There was a ‘homing pigeon’ too.
S.P.Balasubramaniam, Lata Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, and Sharda Sinha were the singers who sang the 10 songs in the movie. We have the following two songs from the movie on the blog

Shekhar Gupta’s post gives us the story of the movie.

Asad Bhopali was born Asadullah Khan in Bhopal on July 10th, 1921 to Munshi Ahmad Khan. He was learned in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and English. AT 28 he moved to Mumbai to become a songwriter. That was the period of lyricists and songwriters of repute like D.N. Madhok, Prem Dhawan, Rajinder Krishan, Khumar Barabankavi, Jaan Nisar Akhtar etc. and Asad Bhopali managed to create an identity for himself.

Asad Bhopali has given songs which have been popular and can be heard on the radio and music systems regularly. Songs like ‘woh jab yaad aaye’; ‘kismat bigadi duniya badali’; ‘sau baar janam lenge’; the fun song in the late ’70s ‘ram dulaari maike gayi’. Today’s generation or those in their 30s currently will remember the songs of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ (MPK) which was among the last movies that he wrote songs for. He passed away on June 9th, 1990. Thanking Asad Bhopali for today’s song and numerous others that he wrote for movies since his debut in 1949.

I have never seen MPK as a whole. Also I have not seen all the songs but the song with this post is one that no TV viewer or Radio listener can escape. It is in the voices of S P Balasubramaniam and Lata Mangeshkar but not a duet, its a multi version song. We cannot call the male version serious or sad but the female version is full of coy romance and is lip-synced by the dainty Bhagyashree Patwardan.

June 9th happens to be the birthday of a dear friend of Atuldom. I wish him a very Happy Birthday with this post. He is a person who is my inspiration in the sense that he learnt so many skills after retirement proving that there is no age-limit to learn anything new. He has no prejudices as regards the age of the music he listens to- meaning he is of the opinion there are good and bad songs/ music in all ages and times. He may not go out of his way seeking songs of new movies but appreciates good work when he sees it. He is generous in sharing his knowledge. He is among the few persons who I am comfortable in chatting with and can pick up the phone and start talking as if there is no gap in communication. The mornings of the WhatsApp group associated with the blog begin with his “GOOD MORNING” messages and we treasure the beautiful thoughts that come with it. (I am sorry if I am repeating everything that I said last year, but my feelings and thoughts remain the same)

We in Atuldom like to think of him as our IN-HOUSE ENCYCLOPEDIA and I prefer addressing him as Guruji or Arunji. Yes!! today is our dear Arunkumar Deshmukhji’s birthday. All his posts are so well-researched that I am sure it is a big, time consuming activity for him considering that he also has his responsibilities of being a doting father and proud grandfather. May God give you all the energy needed to keep the posts coming in at a steady pace and awaiting your 1100th post soon.

Wish you A Very Happy Birthday Guruji!!! Hope the great musical times continue. 🙂

Most Indians today know that Tiger is the national animal of India. But that was not the case when India became independent. Asiatic Lion (found in Geer forest in Gujarat), was declared as India’s national animal in 1948 by PM Jawaharlal Nehru in 1948, mainly because of lobbying by Gujrat Natural History Society.

But the number of lions was very small, whereas Tigers were found in as many as 16 states of India. On 18 november 1972, exactly 49 years ago, Royal Bengal Tiger was chosen as India’s national animal.

It is to be kept in mind that tigers found all over India are of the same species viz Royal Bengal tiger (Tigris panthera). If someone thinks that Royal Bengal Tigers are only found in Bengal and Bangladesh, and tigers in other parts of India are of different species , then that is not the case. The name Royal Bengal Tiger itself is a misnomer. Some British Official had first seen this animal in an area now falling in Central India – present day MP, Chhatisgarh, Maharashtra region- in other words in Mowgli country of Rudyard Kipling) and named it as Royal Bengal Tiger, because that region then fell under Bengal Presidency. It is to be noted that Bengal Presidency covered a vast region of India those days. It covered entire North East India, Present Bangladesh, Bangal, Bihar , Jharkhand, Orissa, Eastern UP, MP, Chhatisgarh, etc. Like the case then, even today most population of Royal Bengal tigers is found in the same Mowgli land.

Both Lions and tigers were facing extinction during 1970s. There were only 1827 tigers left in India in 1972. To save tigers from extinction, a tiger conservation programme called Project Tiger was started in April 1973 by Government of India. 27 tiger sanctuaries were created under this project. Today, the number of tigers in India is estimated to be around 2500-3500.

Today Bengal has a tiger population of under 100. Same is the case for Bangladesh. In contrast, MP, and Karnataka have over 500 tigers each while Uttarakhand has 400 plus and Maharashtra 300 plus. Tamilnadu has 200 plus. Kerala, UP, Assam have 100 plus tigers each. Overall, as many as nine different Indian states have more Royal Bengal Tigers than are found in Sundarban area of Bengal and Bangladesh. So personally I would like to describe this animal as Royal Indian Tiger that enjoys a pan Indian presence.

The population of these tigers have reduced in Bangladesh and Bengal (sundarban area), whereas their population has increased in other parts of India. So, I can only laugh when Bangladesh stakes claims on this animal. Like India, they too have Royal Bengal Tiger as their national animal. On another note, lions are used as their their national symbols by England as well as Sri Lanka, though none of these countries today have any lions left in their jungles.

To mark today’s date as the date when Tiger’s became the national animal of India, I was looking for a song where Tiger finds a mention, even if symbolically. I think I have found a rocking and rollicking song for the occasion. This song is from “Appu Raja”(1990), which was a dubbed version of the Original Tamil movie Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989).

This movie (both original as well as Hindi dubbed version) were produced by Kamal Haasan and directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao for Raaj Kamal Films International, Madras. The film had Kamal Haasan, Jaishankar, Nagesh, Gautami, Rupini, Manorama, Srividya, Janagaraj, Moulee, Delhi Ganesh, Nassar etc in it.

The movie was dubbed but songs in Hindi version were specially recorded, duly translating the Tamil lyrics into Hindi.

Here is the first song from “Appu Raja”(1990) to appear in the blog. This fantastic danc song is sung by S P Balasubrahmaniam and chorus. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ilayaraja. The picturisation shows wonderful dance performance by Kamal Hasan, Manorama (playin Kamal Hasan’s mother) and others.

On the occasion of adoption of Tiger as Indian national animal, here is a wondful dance song. I am told that this song has become a must play song at birthday parties in Maharashtra. This song is a fit song to dance, no doubt about that.

With this song, “Appu Raja”(1990) makes its debut in the blog.

The song with this post is one that I have been wanting to present on the blog for years. I have kept looking for its link on YouTube and finally found that someone has uploaded it in May 2019. Then I looked for the movie’s songs on our blog and found one song was posted with lyrics contributed by Avinashji.

In the comments to that song Prakshchandraji has written this about the movie:-

“Shubh Kaamna is a remake of famous Telugu hit movie “Shubh Lekha(1982) (directed by the same famous director K.Vishwanath) starring famous Telugu Hero (now turned into politician) Chiranjeevi and Sumalata. The film dealt with the Dowry system and Utpal Dutt`s acting in Shubh kaamna is very good. And the music of Pancham is also very good. Kiran Vairale acted very well. But I think, somehow the southern flavour of the movie was not accepted by northern audience. But I enjoyed the movie very much.”

Prakashji had also mentioned that the videos related to the movie are not easily available.

The movie had a cast of Rati Agnihotri, Kiran Vairale, Ashalata, Rakesh Roshan, Vinod Mehra (think it was a special appearance), Sujit Kumar, Utpal Dutt, Asrani, Omprakash, Satyen Kappu, and South actor Sudhakar played Utpal Dutt’s younger son and Kiran Vairale’s love interest. The songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. I had seen this movie with family at the time of its theatrical release; and loved the concept of the movie. There was something to do with Allwyn watch company in the movie and some portion of the movie was shot in the factory, if my memory is correct. Also the beaches of Andhra Pradesh served as location for much of the movie.

Today’s song is a stage song which has Rakesh Roshan singing at a cultural program at the college where Rati Agnihotri is a lecturer and Kiran Vairale (her sister) is a student. The song is in a few dialects(editor’s- it is in Bangla).

Today happens to be Rakesh Roshan’s birthdate. He started his career at 21 or 22 after the untimely death of his father -the music director Roshan. He began as assistant to director Mohan Kumar in films like ‘Anjaana’. He was recommended by Rajendra Kumar to Soodesh Kumar and he got a supporting role in ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’ All through his acting career he has acted in many heroine-centric movies like ‘Paraya Dhan’, ‘Khoobsurat’, ‘Aankhon Aankhon Mein’, ‘Bahurani’, ‘Humari Bahu Alka’ etc. He played a few grey characters too as in ‘Jhootha Kahin Ka’, ‘Dil Aur Deewar’, ‘Daasi’, ‘Aakhir Kyon?’ etc. When he started his own production house his first movie was ‘Aap Ke Deewane’ which starred Tina Munim opposite two heroes- Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan. His next was ‘Kaamchor’ which had Jaya Prada as the central character. this was followed by ‘Jaag Utha Insaan’ and ‘Bhagwan Dada’ both of which had Sridevi in important roles. He turned a full-fledged filmmaker i.e. a producer director with ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ which was on Rekha’s character. ‘Bahurani’ (1989) and ‘Aurat Aurat Aurat’ (1996) where the last movies where he had a substantial part to play. He has since been seen in guest appearances in ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, ‘Krrish’ and ‘Om Shanti Om’. He has been in the enterainment industry for 50 years now.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part XLVI: Year 1992

In this episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1992.

In 1991, 100 Hindi movies containing 646 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 12 of these movies and she sang 25 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 12 % of the movies released in 1992. Her voice was heard in 4 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1992.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 7 music directors and 9 lyricists in these 12 movies released in 1992. Laxmikant Pyarelal were the most prolific music directors with Lata, with 659 songs in HFM with Lata Mangeshkar by the end of 1992. Shankar Jaikishan with 457 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were in the second position. R D Burman with 331 Lata Mangeshkar and Kalyanji Anandji with 307 songs were next ahead of C Ramchandra with 274 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Chitragupta (239), Madan Mohan (195), S D Burman (179),Naushad (145), Roshan (144), Hemant Kumar (127), Anil Biswas (120), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Bappi Lahiri (110), Salil Chaudhary (109), Rajesh Roshan (106) and Vasant Desai (104). Together these seventeen music directors composed 3714 songs out of 5034 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1992. Anand Bakshi with 679 songs was the top lyricist with Lata Mangeshkar. Other leading lyricists with Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (555), Majrooh Sultanpuri (405), Shailendra (361), Hasrat Jaipuri (301), Prem Dhawan (201), Bharat Vyas (193), Shakeel Badayuni (189), Sahir Ludhianvi (161) and Indeewar (154). These ten lyricists had penned 3200 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

“Angaar”(1992) was produced by S M Arif and Shashilal K Nair and directed by Shashilal K Nair. #the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #Year-1983 – The year of ‘Himmatwaalaa’

We are back for yet another ‘warmer’ summer. Temperatures are already soaring day by day. e are in the midst of the second summer in the ‘pandemic age’. If we compare it to last year’s summer, this year ‘surge of the pandemic’ is decidedly more serious than what it was in the previous year.

For students also, an unusual summer in terms of classes and exams. And that reminds me of the ‘summers’ in my childhood. We would wait for the exams to get over, which would be conducted in March-April. From May it would be vacations till June 7th (or the first or second Monday of June, hope I am correct) when the schools reopened for the next educational year.

The normal planning for the vacations would be to visit grandparents, playing cricket, reading story books, magazines, comics, cricket-samrat’, ‘listening to music on SLBC, ‘Vividh Bharati’ and ‘listening to BBC Khel Samachar etc. on radio’. Watching movies in the nearby city (Akola) would be one more option. Also common in those days were ‘touring talkies’ which would be camping in the season. After a full day of warm summer, one ould enjoy movies in the evening and night shows in these touring talkies which generally would be in open fields.

That was the planning for ‘summer vacations’ but before that we had to go through exams.

When I talk of ‘summer nostalgia’, I cannot forget the summer of the most important year in my life, and that is the year ‘1983’ (educational year 1982-83) when I was in 10th standard and I appeared for the board exams in Mar-1983 (or may be Mar-April-1983).

A crucial year of studies in one’s life according to the general ‘perception’ in our society (in those years, or it is the same even today?) 😊.
However, we were not having those many comforts we have now. There was no TV, no mobile, no internet, no fridge (at our home).
But there was ‘Radio’ or ‘Transistor’ and there were books and newspapers. Other than cricket it was ‘carrom’ ‘badminton’ and other outdoor games etc.

However, my Uncle staying at Koradi (Nagpur) had purchased a ‘Dynora’ ‘b/w’ TV. And India and Pakistan were having a test series. So, somehow, I convinced my parents to allow me to go for few days and watch the matches on TV and come back.

Imagine, on one side all my friends, classmates were tense, and I had bunked my ‘tuitions’ to watch India-Pakistan matches on TV. My tuition teacher asked my parents to please call me back and when I returned from Nagpur, he humbly requested me ‘aata he cricket vagaire soda, ani abhyasaat laksh ghaala’ (forget the cricket now and concentrate on the studies now) And why not he was not even charging me the tuition fees like my other friends.

So, I concentrated on on studies, but still not giving a serious thought to Teacher and Parent’s instructions I continued to at least play half an hour every day and even on examination days, citing the reason of ‘relieving exam stress’ to my parents.

After examinations it was again ‘cricket’ and ‘movies’ too … And when I talk of summer’1983 I cannot forget the movies I watched during the vacation after appearing for the board exams which was like normal exams for me.

Cassette players had already made entry into our colony and a few people possessed them . So, there were songs and movies. Songs of ‘Nikaah’, ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Himmatwaala’ etc. could be heard anywhere either on radio or ‘tape recorders.’

As a cricket fan, this summer turned out to be the most memorable and unforgettable as Kapil’s Devils clinched the ‘first world cup title’ for India in June’1983.

Given my age that time I was more interested in cricket, movies, books, and study to pass the exams 😊.

Now, when I check the important happenings in our country in that year – 1983 – google had the following results.

● Silk Smitha.
● Khushwant Singh.
● Kapil Dev brings World Cup to India.
● Nellie Massacre tragedy.
● Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Challenges were still there, and the next year 1984 was a crucial year as we are all aware we lost our Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The previous years to 1983 i.e., 1981 & 1982 saw floods playing havoc in Rajasthan, and Saurashtra & Orissa, respectively.

All was lost for the peoples residing there, but life had to find its way, so the people of this country do, from time immemorial – facing challenges – fighting them – and winning over them and re-creating more than what has been lost. ‘To fight back with more strength after all is lost’ is in the blood of the people of this land.

Ah! but one cannot bring back the lives that are lost.

Today, again, we are facing challenges and our ‘warriors’ from different fields of the society are fighting with the pandemic and helping people going far out of the way of what they could be.

The stories of highest sacrifices done by individuals and group of peoples never cease to hit the media and life goes on …

Here is a song, that could better explain the ‘challenge’, we as ‘human’ must overcome and save our people, help them, and ‘rebuild’ them.

‘The dignity’ of ‘humanity’ should be upheld and protected.

If 1983 was the year of filmy ‘Himmatwaalaa’ the year ‘2020’ and ‘2021’ have been the years of the ‘real heroes’, who have shown exemplary courage during the ‘lock-down-1’ and first phase of the pandemic, and during the second and worst phase of the pandemic.

Whether they are frontline health workers, doctors, social workers, non-governmental organizations providing food and shelters to many, migrant labors, small entrepreneurs, or start-ups … all of them have suffered a lot themselves. and have still helped many to stand in this hour of calamity.

The ‘pandemic challenge’ is not over yet and still a lot needs to be done by all collectively…

Today’s song is the song which I like most from this movie ‘Himmatwaalaa-1983’ and Bappi Lahiri has given this different composition among the other ‘dance-romance-dream’ songs in this movie. Same thing applies to the lyricist Indeever who penned this song.

In the movie the song happens when nearby villages have been washed off due to flood and nature’s fury (in the movie it is shown taking place in Gujarat).
The hero of the movie Jeetendra calls a meeting of the youths and motivates them to join him in collectively helping those who have lost their all.
However, the elders in the town did not agree with Jeetendra and try to prevent their kin from joining him.

This song takes place here when Jeetendra give the clarion call to all singing this song. As it happens the people (Arun Govil and many others) respond to his call and joined him in this mission.

Hullo Atuldom

“Saagar” (1985) had a cast of Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Hasaan, Saeed Jaffery, Nadira, Sharat Saxena, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, Lilliput and Madhur Jaffery. It was directed by Ramesh Sippy and was produced by G P Sippy’s ‘Sippy Films’. It was a vehicle for Dimple’s comeback into Bollywood after her sabbatical brought on by marriage and family life. She was making a comeback after a gap of about 11 years. Her heroes were also her age group so they made an eye-pleasing team.

“Saagar” was a simple love story of a rich boy falling in love with a ‘not-so-well off girl’ who helps her father run a tavern in a fishing village . She has a childhood friend (Kamal) who loves her but cannot get himself to profess it. Into this village the rich boy (Rishi) walks in, befriends Raja (Kamal) and falls in love with Mona (Dimple). There is also friendship between the three, almost reminiscent of Raj Kapoor’s “Sangam”. We have Ravi’s (Rishi) grandmother playing the spoke in the cartwheel of the lovers. We also have one friend sacrificing his love for the happiness of the other two.

All-in-all nothing spectacular just that the movie was entertaining and we had the lead actors giving good performances. The songs were written by Javed Akhtar, and RD Burman was the composer. He had Kishore Kumar (who won a Filmfare award for “Saagar kinaare”), Lata Mangeshkar, S P Balasubramaniam, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh singing the songs in the movie.

I am writing this post to wish the superstar of South Indian cinema on his 66th birthday. He has been in the industry from a young age. He began as a child-actor and I have written a brief about him in this post of mine four years ago. So let us get directly to the song and marvel at this actor’s ability to emote with his eyes.

The song is sung by SPB and is a party song which is a celebration of the characters birthday. It has Nadira and Lilliput who are aware of Raja’s feelings and Saeed Jaffery and others who are oblivious. The song also begins with RD’s trademark of making music with unusual instruments; here he has used a comb.

Wishing Kamalhassan all health and happiness today on his 66th birthday.

Tribute to S. P. Balasubramaniam

The great playback singer of south india left for heavenly abode after his month long illness and Covid – 19 related complications, which had him hospitalised since August. He is said to have recorded his last song on 5th August at Hyderabad. Some sources are reporting he has total 40000 songs to his credit. This calculates to more than two songs per day, in a 50 year career. The career spanning 5 decades and active career he was much revered and loved in the south India’s movie and music fan. The four primary languages of the south, namely Kannada, Telegu, Tamil and Malayalam have the major share of his songs.

When thinking of his songs, the first film that comes to mind is “Ek Duje Ke liye” (1981). When I looked up the songs of this film and found this info about how S. P. Balasubramaniam finally got to sing the songs of this film:
This was singer S.P. Balasubramaniam’s debut Hindi film. Music directors Laxmikant – Pyarelal were not keen on using him for the film since they had not worked with him before. Director K. Balachander convinced them that S.P. Balasubramaniam was the right choice since his imperfect diction would suit the role of South Indian man played by Kamal Haasan in the film.

When S.P. Balasubramaniam first met Laxmikant – Pyarelal for this film, the music director duo had asked him to sing a song. The singer first sang the title song of “Mere Mehboob” (1963) composed by Naushad. The composers then asked him to sing a simple song and he sang “Jaanewalo Zara Mud KeDekhoMujhe” (“Dosti”, 1964) composed by Laxmikant – Pyarelal themselves. According to S.P. Balasubramaniam, it was this song that convinced the composers of his abilities.

Tere Mere Beech Mein (Duet) – This duet with Lata Mangeshkar was the first song S.P. Balasubramaniam had recorded for this film. He spoke a few Tamil lines in this song including “Nee romba nallapaadarae” meaning “You sing very well”. He later said that he found the words ironical since they came from a newcomer like him and were addressed to the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. He was apparently so nervous during the recording that he had accidentally spilt tea on her saree. Understanding his plight, Lata had praised S.P. Balasubramaniam during the rehearsals in order to put him at ease.

These details finally made me decide that I want to post a song from this film. I found that only two song from this film is posted in the blog till date:

And this beautiful song which was all the rage in the 80’s is not yet posted, which has two solo versions. One is by Lata Mangeshkar, a happy solo and other is by SPB a sad, very sad solo. Lata version is beautifully shot in picturesque locales of Goa with Rati Agnihotri singing and Kamaal Haasan, not comprehending the hindi song, trying to understand where she is pointing in the other direction. The last scene of this song, with both Rati Agnihotri and Kamaal Haasan, standing with their backs to the rock outcroppings, looking out to the see from the vantage point, with the beach below and the mountains just beyond, was the picture perfect poster on the movie hoardings, even in theatre’s.

The SPB version is shot in a hotel room, where both Kamal Haasan and RatiAgnihotri find themselves in adjoining room. They have promised Rati’s mother that they will not contact and meet each other for a year, so cannot meet. How inane is that, if they met by accident and not by design, than it is divine intervention. But this was an opportunity to create an intense song situation, with Rati doing more histrionics, with a sea-shell:). In an earlier scene, Rati’s mother burns the photo of Kamaal Haasan. Rati, in a fit of inspiration to prove her true love, mixes the burnt carbon remains of the photograph with tea and drinks it. I think the mother was played by Shubha Khote.

The song also won the following awards :

So I am presenting a song, which won SPB a National Film Award for best playback singer in 1981, as a tribute on his passing away. Of course his memory will be forever alive through his numerous songs. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Today (4 may 2020) is a day when no notable HFM personality was born. But on this day, one person totally unconnected with HFM was born in a far away land 365 years ago. He would invent a musical instrument that has played a vital role in the development of HFM. Movies of 1950s and 1960s were not complete if this instrument did not appear in at least in one song. In one movie, this instrument has even appeared in four songs !

The instrument that we are talking about is Piano. It was invented in 1709 by Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco(4 May 1655 – 27 January 1731), was an Italian maker of musical instruments.

Nine of his pianos still survive. Three of them are preserved in three museums, one in New York (Metropolitan Museum), Rome (Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali) and Leipzig university( Museum of musical instruments)

Hindi movies have had hundred on Piano songs in it. This blog has as many as 147 Piano songs. The earliest is from 1938. Pianon songs came into their own in HFM from late 1940s and ruled the roost in HFm till late 1970s. After that, Piano songs became few and far between. Pianos, which depicted class and prosperity of the character playing it in those days. From 1970s onwards, actors started sporting guitar instead. Guitar may have looked jazzy and spectacular, but it disd not have the old world charm of a Piano.

Most Piano songs of note (pun unintended) have already been covered in the blog.

When I searched for Piano songs on internet, I came across a few writeups, that discussed well known Piano songs. All of them have already been covered in the blog. When I went through one of these writeups (posted on 5 october 2016), I found the description of these songs familiar. I realised that the description was very much mine ! When I checked up these songs in the blog, I realised that this article had copied and pasted contents of the writeup of Piano songs in the blog ! For instance, my description of “Bhaabhi”(1938) Piano song goes like

This song is picturised as a piano song. P Jairaj is playing the piano and this song is sung by Renuka Devi. Her father V H Desai looks on and later the villain Rama Sukul too comes in and watches her sing with disapproval.

You will find this description faithfully copied and pasted in that article.

My description of “Andaaz”(1949) piano song, “hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe”, was

Dilip Kumar sits at the piano at night and sings this song. And Nargis arrives with her pet dog and watches Dilip Kumar sing the song, clutching her dog like a pillow.

This description is faithfully copied and pasted in that writeup.

Like this, all the 25 Piano songs described there copies contents from this blog, without giving credit. How very cheap of this so called blogger. I have posted a comment in that blog which is unlikely to see the light of the day, of course.

Coming to Piano songs, I quickly realised that these songs had gone the way of qawwaali songs, cabarat songs etc- viz they had vanished as the golden era of HFM drew to a close.

One can still find a few piano songs here and there, but these songs are nowhere near the same class of Piano songs that were created during the golden era of HFM.

After some frenetic search, I have been able to locate one as yet unrepresented Piano song. It is from a “recent” movie. Even the movie, a musical blockbuster, is not yet represented in the blog.

Today, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the man who gave us Piano, here is a piano song from “Saajan”(1991). Yes, this movie, the biggest box office hit of the year 1991 was not there in the blog till now. This movie, which was produced by K C Bokadia and directed by Lawrence Desouza had Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Kader Khan, Reema Laagoo, Laxmikant Berde, Ekta Sohini, Anjana Mumtaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Yunus Parvez, Raju Shreshtha, Tej Sapru, Vikas Anand etc in it.

I had fond memories of watching this movie in Vadodara in 1991, where I was attending a course those days.

The movie had ten songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Saajan”(1991) to appear in the blog. This song has male and female solo versions sung by S P Balasubhramanyam and Alka Yagnik respectively. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

It is the female version, picturised on stage, with Madhuri Dixit near a piano, that makes this song a Piano song. Unlike Piano songs of yore, some sort of mist engulfs her and the piano. I wonder what the director was trying to achieve with this kind of picturisation.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the creator of Piano, here is this memorable Piano song from 1991.

Welcome all to today’s post where I am presenting a song from the 1993 movie ‘Gardish’. I like this song very much. I had shared this song long time back but it was yet to be to be posted on the blog. This song is penned by Javed Akhtar.

Today 17th January 2020 is the 75th birth anniversary of Writer, Poet and Lyricist Javed Akhtar who was born on 17th January 1945 at Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh).

We on the blog wish him a ‘very happy birthday today and a healthy and peaceful life ahead’…

Javed Akhtar who started his film career as a ‘screen play’ writer with Salim Khan, came from a family of Poets. His father Jan Nisar Akhtar was an Urdu poet and lyricist while his grand father and his great grand father’s elder brother were also a poet.

The pair of Salim-Javed has given Hindi movies many successful and milestone movies working together including hits like ‘Andaz-1971’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’, ‘Deewaar’,’Sholay-1975’ etc. I am not going to list them all here in this post for today, and maybe we will have a separate post on this in the future.

After separating from Salim Khan (in 1981-1982), Javed Akhtar continued writing for movies as an independent screen writer and has been a part of many successful movies like ‘Betaab-1983’, ‘Mashaal-1983’, ‘Saagar-1985’, ‘Arjun-1985’, ‘Meri Jung-1985’, ‘Dacait-1987’, ‘Main Aazaad Hoon-1989’ etc.

After writing for movies he moved on to writing lyrics for the movies. He began his journey as a lyricist with the movie ‘Silsila-1981’ and till the latest movie to be released next week i.e. ‘Panga-2020’ he has penned lyrics for more than one hundred movies (if the information available in the domain is correct ‘Panga-2020’ will be his 111th movie as a ‘Lyricist’). As a lyricist he has given us many many memorable songs and many songs which have a high ‘poetic’ value.

His lyrics for the movies ‘Saaz-1996’, ‘Border-1997’, ‘Godmother-1998’, ‘Refugee-2000’, and ‘Lagaan-2001’ fetched him the ‘Best Lyricist’ award at the National Awards of that year.

He has also won many ‘filmfare’ awards for his ‘screen writing’ and ‘lyrics writing’ which I am not listing them all here. And instead will come back on the movie details for the today’s song.

‘Gardish-1993’ was presented by ‘Good Knight Films’. It was produced by R. Mohan and directed by Priyadarshan.

Priyadarshan also wrote the ‘screen play’ of this movie.

The movie had Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Shammi Kapoor, Kunika, Asrani, Dimple Kapadia, Raj Babbar, Rakesh Bedi, Tej Sapru, Anand Mahadevan, Suresh Oberoi, Annu Kapoor and Shagufta Ali. This movie introduced Aiswarya (from South) and Mukesh Rishi.

Story of this movie was written by A.K. Lohitadas. Its dialogues were written by Suraj Sanim.
Viswanathan Vaduthala, Mohan Payyanoor, Vijay. K. Bhavan, Sonu Sisupal were assistants in direction. Also, there were II- & III-unit directors – R.R. Shinde and Murali Nagavally respectively.

Editing of this movie was done by N. Goplakrishnan. Santosh Sivan was the Director of Cinematography of this movie.
Choreography of this movie was done by Sundaram, Prabu Deva and Suchitra.

Back ground music was scored by S.P. Venkatesh.

Lyrics were penned by Javed Akhtar and music was composed by R.D. Burman. The movie had six songs.
Asha Bhonsle, M.G. Sreekumar and S.P. Balasubramaniam had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19th August 1993 and it was a remake of Malayalam movie ‘Kireedam’. It’s remake was also made in Telugu, Kannada before the Hindi version and later in Bengali and Tamil.

I had watched this movie twice then – once at Kota (I was staying at Kota then) and once at Indore during my ‘in-transit’ halt their while travelling from Kota to Parli-Vaijnath.

I liked this movie very much then as it had some powerful performances especially by Jackie Shroff, Amrish Puri, Dimple Kapadia and Mukesh Rishi and others too. I would also mentioned the role played by Annu Kapoor wherein he is playing an educated unemployed who accidentally become a ‘beggar’ for survival, but capitalizing on it he went on to employ many educated unemployed into his ‘business’(empire of ‘bhikharis’😊, and he also ‘innovatively’ deputes each of them according to their ‘relevant qualification’ for placement of ‘begging’ at a particular ‘location/field’.

It’s a ‘cynical comedy’ type role and Annu Kapoor has given his very best in this role.

For those who have not watched this movie I would sum-up the storyline in the following –
– The tagline on the posters of the movie – ‘Wanted to be a man of law, now wanted by the law’ i.e. the protagonist in the movie – the hero- Jackie Shroff.
– Amrish Puri, who plays the father to Jackie Shroff in this movie, is a Havaldar in Police and always dreaming of his song becoming a Police Inspector (the movie starts with this scene in Police Station …)

(The film won two Filmfare Awards—Best Art Direction (Sabu Cyril) and Best Action (Thyagarajan), and was nominated for Best Actor (Shroff), Best Supporting Actor (Amrish Puri), and Best Supporting Actress(Dimple Kapadia, as per information available on ‘wiki’.)

The songs of this movie composed by R.D. Burman were nice and I like them. ‘Rang Rangeeli Raat’ by Asha Bhonsle and the words (in some foreign language, I think) reminds the song ‘dil ki manzil kuchh aisi hai manzil’ from ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne-1963’.

The other songs were also good. And the one that I am presenting today was my favorite song from this movie. The song keeps growing on as we listen to it more and more.

I had then (in 1993) got this one song recorded six times on one side of the cassette. I am sure, our readers will also like this song. The song has some beautiful meaningful verses penned by Javed Akhtar.

This song is sung by S.P. Balasubramaniam and composed by R.D. Burman.
