Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Baar baar din ye aaye…Happy birthday to you

Posted on: October 30, 2010

This blog is over two years old now. In these two years, we have passed many milestones. By now, this blog has over 3100 songs. Recently the blog clocked one million visits, which is not bad for a non professional blog like this.

During these two years, I have received lots of encouragement from lots of visitors by means of comments, suggestions, farmaishes etc. Some of them have become regulars and they feel like friends and even family to me. I in fact cherish their comments and encouragement.

Among the regular visitors of this blog, Raja occupies a very important place in my heart. I know him on internet from 2005, when we became familiar to each other because of our mutual interest in cricket. Both of us are today members of a cricket forum called Cricforum.

With time, we discovered that we shared many things in common, viz age, similar interests etc. We have spent five fun filled years together in this cricket forum. I used to discuss Hindi movie songs on that forum, and later I hit upon the idea of this song blog. In the earlier days of this blog when I used to post just one song a day, Raja was one the earliest regular visitor of this blog and his encouragement went a long way in the development of this blog.

All these days, we had interacted only on internet. It was a matter of great happiness to me that I was able to meet with Raja face to face yesterday night (29 october 2010). It was indeed a red letter day for me. It was the first time I ever met a regular visitor of my blog in person.

We spent some three hours together and discussed whole lots of issues of importance. He was interested to see my songs collection and my methodology of posting songs in the blog. We also discussed people whom we both admire, such as Memsaab. We were both unanimous that Greta is playing a stellar role in popularising old Hindi movies and the lesser known actors of Hindi movies.

I could not resist asking him to give a farmaish. He gave this birthday song from “Farz” (1967) as his farmaish. It is the first farmaish that I have got in person. So here it is.

This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Jeetendra, Babita and whole lot of characters assembled to celebrate the birthday of Babita , who plays Sunita. Raja tells me that this would have been ideal birthday song for Greta too had we been able to post it a few days earlier.

Indeed I agree. Babita, Sunita, Greta- all are similar sounding names.

So here is this song, sung with gusto by Rafi. It is written by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

beqaraar hoke daaman,
thaam loon main kiskaa
beqaraar hoke daaman,

kyaa misaal doon main teri,

Happy Birthday to you

Happy Birthday to Sunita,
Happy Birthday to you

auron ki tarah kuchh main bhi,
tohfaa aaj laataa
auron ki tarah kuchh main bhi,
tohfaa aaj laataa
main teri haseen mehfil mein,
phool le ke aataa
jinhen kahaa use chaahe,
phoolon ki zaroorat
jo bahar khud kahalaaye,
har kali kaa dil dhadkaaye
tu jiye hazaaron saal,
ye meri hai aarzoo
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to Sunita,
Happy Birthday to you

phoolon ne chaman se tujhko hai salaam bhejaa
phoolon ne chaman se tujhko hai salaam bhejaa
taaron ne gagan se tujhko ye payaam bhejaa
duaa hai ye Khuda kare ai shokh tujhko
chaand ki umar lag jaaye
aaye to qayaamat aaye
tu jiye hazaaron saal,
ye meri hai aarzoo
Happy Birthday to you
oho oho
Happy Birthday to you
aha aha
Happy Birthday to Sunita,
Happy Birthday to you
baar baar din ye aaye,

May this day come again and again
May my heart sing this again and again
May you live a thousand years
This is indeed my wish
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to
Happy Birthday to you

(Am) not in my senses right now
Who can I fall back on for support
Who is there who is your equal
Who can I indeed name
No, no, there really is none
Nobody as beautiful (as you)
On whom one’s glance just stays
Who is considered without equal

May you live a thousand years
This is indeed my wish
Happy Birthday to
Happy Birthday to you

Like others here I could’ve also brought you a gift today
In this beautiful assembly, I could’ve also brought you flowers
But my heart said, what need does she have
Of flowers
When she herself symbolizes Spring
And makes every bud’s heart beat

May you live a thousand years
This is indeed my wish
Happy Birthday to
Happy Birthday to you

The flowers from the gardens send you these greetings
The stars from the sky send you this message
They pray that the Lord may bestow on you
The years that the moon has
Even if it means the day of resurrection arrives first

May you live a thousand years
This is indeed my wish
Happy Birthday to
Happy Birthday to you

May this day come again and again
May my heart sing this again and again
May you live a thousand years
This is indeed my wish
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to
Happy Birthday to you

Indeed this song has unique place in special occassion song. It is a best song on birthday. Rafi is marvelous, as always he is.
Chaudahavinka chand ho- is such unique song for prayer of a loving lady.

As Atul says, the two of us finally managed to meet each other. It was really memorable for me too. I have long admired Atul’s witty comments, not just on this blog but also on our cricket forum. He has these one-liners that I call Atulisms. 🙂

We had a very nice time together. Atul walked me through the process he goes through to post songs on his blog. We discussed other stuff too – including a diary he used to maintain way back in 1976, with handwritten cricket scorecards and Hindi film songs. Those were pre-internet days, so every piece of info we could gather from any source was very valuable. Indeed Atul and I can relate to a lot of things – I used to also maintain cricket statistics in this manner. 🙂

Over dinner, Atul asked me for a song farmaish “on the spot”. This birthday song was fresh in my mind – I remember searching for it a few days earlier on his blog and not finding it. It is my favourite birthday song – I love Rafi’s voice in this, I love the picturisation, I love the lyrics.

I did not expect Atul to turn this around so quickly on the blog. Thanks a lot, Atul.

Atul, since this is a very popular birthday song I’ve tried to provide an English translation for those who would like to have one. It’s not a literal translation but will hopefully help.

Lovely birthday song though not at par with Hum Bhi Agar Bache Hote, which is an iconic song but still this song hold a special place in evergreen birthday songs. Rafi Sahab at his peek in both these songs.

One thing i want to point out. The word birthday is used in three songs only. Two as I have pointed out above and O Nanne se Farishte. And all three are most famous songs.

It is very touching to see how the Internet has created friendship among people who would otherwise have not interacted. Mr Raja and Mr Atul – hats off to your friendship. My son also maintains a cricket score card and I will surely tell him about you too.

In these stress-filled times, it is so relaxing and emotionally touching to see such relationships bloom. While Greta has done a great service to Bollywood, I also feel that Atul has done great service for the cause of Hindi music. It is sheer passion that I think has made Atul choose this as a hobby.

What I also like about the write-ups is that besides talking about the songs and the music and the compositions, there are also tid-bits about the movie and the movie stars which adds immense value.

If not for this blog, where would we have got to meet people like Arunkumarji, Nitinji and Ravinderji who are actually treasure troves of information.

Thanks to Internet we do not have to rely on film magazines to give this information.

Thanks for your comments. It was five years ago that I met Raja in person, but it appears as if it was just a few days ago. How time has flown. I knew him for five years during 2010, and now I know him for ten years. Many more music lovers have met him by now. He is in fact hosting a few regulars once again this october. 🙂
