Hullo Atuldom

Wishing everyone of us a Very Happy Republic Day.

This was my post last year for the occasion. & in that post I had lamented about ignorance among many citizens regarding the significance of 26th January and why it was chosen to be Republic Day.

“The 308 members of the Constituent Assembly, of thenewly Independent India, signed hand-written copies (in Hindi and English) of the Constitution of India on 24th January 1950 after much deliberation and some changes. The Constitution was adopted and came into effect throughout the country from 26th January 1950. Dr. Rajendra Prasad started his tenure as first President of India and the Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India.

That makes January 26th 2023 India’s 73rd Republic Day”.

(I don’t mind making the above paragraph part of my posts every time I write for 26th January)

There are certain events attached with the Republic Day celebrations which I love to see, when shown live on Television and in repeat if I have missed the live telecast.

I like the way Doordarshan shows a brief history about how we attained Independence, how the Constituent Assembly was setup, and the signing of the Constitution itself. This is normally followed by the live telecast rom New Delhi’s India Gate where the Prime Ministers of India pay homage at the Amar Jawaan Jyoti which is at India Gate, to the departed soldiers; I love the serene atmosphere around the whole scene, the two-minute silence etc. Then the Prime Minister drives down Rajpath towards the saluting base and awaits the arrival of the President Of India who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The National Flag is Unfurled, National Anthem is played, Awards for exemplary bravery on the warfront are conferred to recipients and then the Parade commences showcasing India’s Defence capabilities, Cultural and Social Heritage. The Armed Forces participate in the March Past accompanied by their bands; plus there are the NCC, Bharat Scouts & Guides, school children and Tableaus from the various states and Government agencies forming the second part of the parade. The climax of the parade is the Brilliant Fly-past by the Indian Air Force- showing us formations, showering Flower petals on Rajpath etc.

The event comes to a close with the singing of Jana-Gana-Mana. and the Presidential Cavalcade departs followed by the Prime Minister and other dignitaries. I am always amazed by the Horses that form the President’s Bodyguards- their heads are still when the National Anthem is on. The events of the Republic Day come to a close with the Beating the Retreat ceremony on 29th January, this is another charming event. Specially how the Marching soldiers walk back into the sunset and darkness at the end of the parade and the Lights come on at North Block, South Block and Parliament House. This event is held at Vijay Chowk and has trumpeters, buglers, pipe & drum bands of the three-wings of the Armed Forces.

A few changes have taken place in the last few years- Rajpath has been renamed as Kartavya Path and the Amar Jawaan Jyoti from India Gate has been shifted and merged with the eternal flame at the National War Memorial which is close by.

It is my tiny wish to be able to witness the events live atleast once in my life, but then as my dear family has always said we may not be able to get a close enough seat and see things as clearly. True, I don’t disagree. It is similar to saying that when we see a cricket match in a stadium we may not be able to see all the madness in all the stands of the stadium like we see on TV. But then the charged atmosphere at any venue cannot be felt in the TV, correct or not? I can say this based on my experiences gained at the various music concerts that I have attended over the last few years.

Let us get back to 26th January.

There are a few songs that are played on these National days- Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite hymn ‘Vaishnava Janato’ and Jhanda Ooncha rahe hamara- by the bands in the parades.

We all know that ‘Saare Jahaan Se Achcha’ was written by Allama Mohammad Iqbal in 1904. We know that Jana Gana Mana was by Gurdev Rabindranath Tagore. Vande Maatram was by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.

But, personally, I was unaware about the other most important song that we are taught as kids in school- Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Hamaara. Only yesterday I came across a post in our blog by (who else) Shri Arunkumar Deshmukhji. It enlightened me to the fact this was first used in a film in 1938 (any wonder that I like to call him Guruji).

What set me on this quest was a video that I saw recently on TV where I saw Rajnikanth accompanied by Sridevi, Swapna, A K Hangal and I think I spied Macmohan, walking along the lanes of some hilly region, in company of some locals, with the Tricolour in their hands and singing “Jhanda Ooncha Rahe Humara”. On further digging I came to know that it was from the 1991 released, Anil Sharma directed “Farishtay”. It was sung by Shabbir Kumar and the female version has Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Bappi Lahiri is the music composer. Lyrics have been credited to Shyamlal Gupta Parshad.

I looked up about the lyricist and this is what I found- Shyamlal Gupta Parshad belonged to Kanpur and had vowed to walk barefoot till India got freedom from the British rule. Shyamlal Gupta was born as the third child to Vishveshwar Parshad and Kaushalya Devi on September 9, 1896. He penned this song on March 4, 1924.

His song was recognised as the flag song by the All India Congress Committee and was sung for the first time on Jallianwala Baug Diwas 0n 13th April 1924; at Phoolbagh Kanpur in the presence of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Sarojini Naidu sung it in 1938 at the Haripura Session of the Congress where Mahatma Gandhi’s was present.

All this and more on Syamlal Gupta Prashad his family and there current status is available in this article which was the source from which I wrote the above paragraph.

Let us now hear the song from Farishtay (I would love to know if the movie makers have been true to what Shyamlal Gupta Parshad wrote all those years ago). But I can feel that the basic tune is same as the one that was used in the 1938 ‘Fearless Nadia’ film.

Let the us all say “Hum sab bhartiya hain”, “Saare Jahaan se achcha hindustan humara”, ‘Jhanda Ooncha rahe humara” and say with pride
Vande Maatram
Jai Hind
Happy Republic day to Indians

Blog Day :

5219 Post No. : 17209 Movie Count :

The recent months have been very different for me as I was going through many things including many thoughts going through my mind. (I will be trying to put them in my write-ups and present them in future on the blog.).

There was a busy work schedule at work whole of July-August as we shifted the whole warehouse from one place to another (around 10 kms from original location). Thereafter it was getting settled at new location and matching the speed with the requirements of Production in the factory. Add to this the daily travel to reach the workplace and coming back to home. I was not getting into the right mood of writing.

And that is the reason I was less active on the blog. But I was never away from listening music and even watching movies in theaters. I had always loved watching movies in theaters and it gives me immense pleasure. So far in the recent one month I have watched four movies in the theaters. I enjoyed all of them.
On the other hand I was getting my daily dose of listening radio especially Vividh Bharati on FM every morning and evening on my way to office and back.

There have been many songs which I get to listen on radio for the first time and in many cases I always wish that I would present them on the blog. But as the days passed I tend to forget the songs listened. The program in the evening, which I listened to most, plays non-stop Hindi song and doesn’t mention the movie-name the songs are from. So over the period, it slips and after few months I get reminded of such songs again or even the songs get played on after a long gap in the same program.

Today’s song is one such song which I had first listened almost more than one and half-year back. I had then thought to present this on the blog. Because this song is a very nice song or rather a gem of a song but not much heard, may be because it is not from the golden period of Hindi songs.

This song is from the film ‘Maashuka’ (1987).

‘Maashuka’ was directed by Arati Bhattacharya for Harshavardhan Films.

She had also written the story of this movie. (Aarti Bhattacharya was a Bengali actress who also worked in Bhojpuri and Hindi movies as actress, script writer and director. From the information given on her wiki page I guess that the actor in his movie Kunaal is the same person whom she married, and who also was an Bhojpuri actor. There is information available on Aarti Bhattacharya on internet which needs to be compiled in detail for presentation).

The film was produced by Rajiv Ranjan Singh. It had Kunaal, Moonmoon Sen, Arun Govil, and Zarina Wahab, with Shoma Anand. Sachin had a friendly appearance in this movie and then there was Amjad Khan above all of them. Paintal, Murli, Asha Sharma, Master Ravi, Bhagwan Sinha, Shivraj, Mukesh Kumar, Anwar, Fanu, Dharm Raj, Maharana, Ratan, Birender, Sushil Yadav, Master Akash, Gupta, Harisharan, S. Madan, Prabha Mishra and others. Pradeep Kumar also had a special appearance in this movie.

Dulal Dey was the screenplay writer and associate director of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Nawab Arzoo.
Editing of this film was done by Bibhuti Bhushan. S Tewari and RK Aroon had written the lyrics of the songs in this movie. Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar, Shabbir Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Manhar, Ratna Aroon, Subhash and Kunal have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by RK Aroon. This name is new for me and I am not aware much about this music director. Also there is very less information available about him.

This movie had total six songs. Today we listen to a song from this movie which is sung by Shabbir Kumar and penned by Shardanand Tewary.

I think both the lyricist and the music director will make their debut on the blog with the debut of this movie on the blog today.

Incidentally, when I remembered this song on 26th October and checked for biographical details of Shabbir Kumar it was his sixty-ninth birthday on that day. He was born on 26th October 1954.

We belatedly wish Shabbir Kumar a very happy birthday on the blog.

Shabbir Kumar has sung many songs in the eighties and nineties and I too like many of his songs which I would like to present here in follow-up posts.

For today, let us enjoy this wonderful song …

On screen, it is actor Kunaal lip-syncing the song and also seen in the picturisation of this song are Moonmoon Sen and Arun Govil.

19/10/2020 – 64th Birthday of Sunny Deol
——————————————-
“Betaab” (1983) was produced by the Vijayta Films banner Dharmendra. This was the debut Hindi film of its lead actors, Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. Today is Sunny Deol’s birthday, real name Ajay Singh Deol, made his debut at the age of 27 years.

The word “Betaab” evokes the Lata Mangeshkar’s melodious song “ Betaab dil ki tamanna yahi hai” by Madan Mohan in the film “Hanste Zakhm”. For a change, this is one of the films which I have seen, when it was released. I wanted to see the songs of this film for some time now, Sunny Deol’s birthday gave me the excuse. I have seen some of them, looking for a song shot on location. Critically speaking, this is not among the better scores by R. D. Burman. This is very basic, run of the mill music score, none of the RDB versatility being in evidence. May be the 80’s monotony is catching up with me. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.

The location of the major parts of this film is a valley in Pahalgam, Kashmir, below the road leading to the glacier. The valley is named “Betaab valley”, and all tourist vehicles stop there on the way to Amarnath cave. It is a beautiful location, with the river flowing next to it.

We visited Kashmir in May 2012. I can say that it is one place on earth where time has stood still. I found a multiple locations which were seen in so many films of 60-80’s, the same as seen in the movies. Movie makers favorite location was the Dal Lake. The area surrounding it was a lot different, from what was seen in movies like “Aarzoo”. But I could see many places at Gulmarg and Pahalgam same as it was seen in movies. Seeing the wooden shop fronts in Pahalgam town, I remembered seeing the scene is “Bobby”.

Actually, Pahalgam has much more pristine and beautiful locations and points off the beaten track also, like the area called “Mini Switzerland”. I know the technology is so much advanced, and many megapixel cameras are now available to mankind to capture the nature’s beauty. But it is a fact that the human eye’s capacity is 576 megapixel. As far as I can understand, there is no camera in the world which can click or record at 576 megapixel.

This is what Google says, going to such details on a simple search:
“We see in 576 megapixel definition when our eyes are moving, but a single glance would only be about 5-15 megapixels. What’s more, your eyes naturally have a lot of flaws that a camera or digital screen don’t. For example, you have a built-in blind spot where your optic nerve meets up with your retina.”

Fantastic ! or zabardast ! But the fact remains whatever the camera captures or the digital screen displays, are to be seen and read by human eye. Visual input to the brain is through the eyesight, the brain can read only what the eyes will transmit.

Where I am going with all this? No where. But I can’t say I appreciate the way Google tried to dodge my question:) .

tajalli hai teri ye chaand kyaa hai chaandni kyaa hai
agar nazren salaamat hain to jalwon ki kami kyaa hai

Shakeel Badayuni – Laila Majnu(1953)

But I should not count my chickens here, as artificial intelligence may be able to transmit the perfect digital picture to human mind also, for all I know.

Like I said, give me such outdoorsy songs anytime, I am presenting the Shabbir Kumar Solo from “Betaab” filmed completely on location of the said ‘Betaab Valley”. In the song, Sunny Deol has found a “tasveer” of his childhood sweetheart Amrita Singh, in a magazine. He makes a cut out of the photo and sings this song, at his farm house, where he is shown to be rearing horses, and chickens etc.

In the movie Sunny Deol kidnaps Amrita Singh from her father’s house and keeps her in the farm house (seen the song) in a bid to remind her of their childhood friendship and love.

Some more trivia about the film:

• Singer Sonu Nigam played the role of Sunny Deol’s character as a child in this film.
• This film was remade in Telugu as “Samrat” (1987) and in Kannada as “Karthik” (2011).
• This was Javed Akhtar’s first film as a solo screenwriter after Salim – Javed split.
• Singer Shabbir Kumar got his big break in Hindi films when R.D. Burman got him to sing for all the songs in this film.

The movie must be something special to be remade in Telegu and Kannada, a reversal from what usually happens. I will elaborate the bit about Shabbir Kumar is the trivia above. It was said that, all songs of the film were to be recorded by Kishore Kumar. But since Kishore Kumar was away at the time, and the songs were needed for the scheduled shooting, they were recorded in the voices of Shabbir Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The intention was to re-record the Shabbir Kumar portions afterwards in Kishore Kumar’s voice. But the songs turned out to be so well in Shabbir Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar’s voices, that it was decided to keep the songs as it is. And thus the career boost for Shabbir Kumar happened.

I will end the post with a dialogue (by Sunny Deol) in the film, where Amrita Singh refuses to eat the food cooked by Sunny Deol. This is the dialogue I have had to repeat sometimes to my kids, 🙂 🙂 if they disagreed with my cooking:

“Khaana hai to yahi khaana hai, nahi khaana hai to bhi yahi khaana hai”

Blog Day : 3737 Post No. : 14686

Hullo all in Atuldom

11th October. A day when all fans of the star of the millennium go on overdrive to wish him on his blog page, Facebook page, Twitter handle etc. He also has kept pace with these new age phenomena and is very active on these social networking sites, either himself or through his well-paid staff. I am no different, I also wish him on his twitter and blog page (in existence for the last 10 years), and wait for a day in my life when I may get a chance to see him in person- my family thinks I am crazy, never mind that 🙂 . (The closest I have come to standing with him is when I visited Madame Tussauds in London, in 2015). So is the case with our blog, I try to write a post every year for this date.

Happy Birthday to you Dear Amitabh Bachchan.

What do I write about this actor that has not been said before. He is, in absolute sense of the term, not a great actor and its about time we should admit it. But he has a quality called persistence that helped him in the initial stages of his career; when he didn’t give up even after a string of flops before ‘Zanjeer’ (1973) and ‘Deewar’ (1975) happened. He has another quality – eye for detail. I have heard from a friend of mine (she used to be an assistant to Prakash Mehra in the 80s) about how during the filming of ‘Jaadugar’ (1989) he used to check every bit of his costume and take care of continuity from one scene to another. One other quality that he has is valuing time and it has been said by many of his co-stars how they were forced to turn up for shoots on time when Amitabh was their co-actor.

In the recent episode of ‘Rangoli’ on Doordarshan I heard how his style of wrapping a handkerchief around his hand and of pushing his hand into his trouser pockets came about. It is a known fact that Amitabh Bachchan is very accident prone and on Diwali, in 1983 or 84, a sparkler or some firecracker burst in his hand and he had the burn scar for some time (this was widely reported in the newspapers back then), this was also the time when he was shooting for “Inquilaab” and “Shaarabi” and these are the movies where he puts his hand into his trousers. Another example to show that he valued time and didn’t ask for a break in the shoot to recover from the scars.

He has been ever grateful to people who stood by him in his worst times be they producers, directors, actors anyone. I suppose these are some qualities that have helped sustain his charisma all through these 50 years in Bollywood. Wow! 50 years and still active!!

No more from me about my favourite actor.

He made a great team with Manmohan Desai and gave us movies which, though not-entirely logical or believable, were extremely entertaining. If in ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ (1977) Manmohan Desai rescued Amitabh’s mother from the clutches of Jeewan and Ranjeet with the help of a snake, in ‘Mard’ (1985) it was a tiger. In addition, the tiger guides the mother (the eternal ‘Maa’ – Nirupa Roy) towards a waiting boat, pulling her by the ‘pallu’ as if it were a pet dog on a leash. The icing on the cake is the scene when ‘Maa’ bows before the tiger, and it raises its paw to bless her. Man Desai also improved upon Amitabh’s famous ‘Deewar’ scene of remonstrating before the Lord Almighty – he made him sing a song to ‘Maa Sheronwaali’ in ‘Mard’, threatening Her with dire consequences if he cannot or does not meet his mother. And sure enough, by the time the song ends, his mother manages to reach the temple. Thank god for Manmohan Desai’s imagination and Amitabh believing in him.

It is Navaratri time and there is a lot of religious fervour happening all round. In all the states of South India, we have ‘Bomma Kolu‘- Bomma means dolls and Kolu is the artistic arrangement of these on seven tier stands which people display in their homes for nine days, have guests over for haldi-kumkum etc. Western India celebrates the festival with Mata ki Aarti followed by Garba and Dandiya. The festival is called ‘Durga Pooja‘ in Eastern India and there are sarvajanik pandals (temporary worshipping places) where idols of the Mother Goddess with her sons – Ganesh and Kartikeya and other devis – Lakshmi and Saraswati, are installed. And North India has the Navratri with Devi Pooja as well as Ram Leela, the staging of the play based on the life story of Lord Ram. All in all, an enjoyable festival culminating with Dussehra on the 10th day.  Happy Navratri to all.

The song with this post is the Mata ki Bhent (song in worship of the Mother Goddess) that Amitabh sings in ‘Mard’. Playback singer is Shabbir Kumar with Anu Malik being the music director and Indeewar the lyricist.

A few more points about the song – how did anyone allow the tangewala (Amitabh) to light the camphor in his palm? Does lighting the camphor on kumkum covered palm protect the palm from getting burnt? Please note the reaction of the temple pujari (priest) when Amitabh tries to poke himself with the trishul. Is anyone allowed to anoint an idol with blood?

Let us enjoy this masaaledaar song. 🙂

Happy Birthday Amitabh Bachchan.

Song – Maa Sheronwaali O Maa Sheronwaali (Mard) (1985) Singer – Shabbir Kumar, Lyrics – Indeewar, MD – Anu Malik
Chorus

Lyrics

o maa sheronwaali
aaaa aaaaa
o maa shaktishaali
aaaa aaaa
maa meri maa se mila de mujhe
mamta ka main waasta doon tujhe
dar se na tere jaaonga khaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
o maa shaktishaali
maa meri maa se mila de mujhe
mamta ka main waasta doon tujhe
dar se na tere jaaonga khaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali

maa chup hai beta rota hai
aisa jag mein kab hota hai
maa chup hai beta rota hai
aisa jag mein kab hota hai
patthar ke mandir mein reh kar
dil bhi kya tera maa ho gaya patthar
dil bhi kya tera maa ho gaya patthar
teri daya ko jaga doonga
ro kar main tujh ko rula doonga
pighalegi kab tu pahaadonwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali

sab ki maata tab tujhe maanu
mera dukh pehchaane to jaanu
sab ki maata tab tujhe maanu
mera dukh pehchaane to jaanu
jo na dikhaayi maa ki surat
utha le jaaoonga main teri murat
utha le jaaoonga main teri murat
sab kuchh hai dhanwaalon ka
nirdhan ke bas maat pita
daulat yeh meri kyun tu ne chhupa li
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali

apne bhakton ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaa
dil ke sachchon ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaaa
tere bachchon ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaaa
na apno ko de ye sazaa
o apne bhakton ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaa
dil ke sachchon ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaaa
tere bachchon ki tujhko kasam
aaaaaaa
na apno ko de ye sazaa
o maa sheronwaali
o maa shaktishaali
trishul tera utha loonga
charanon pe sar ko chadha doonga
rang degi tujhko lahu ki laali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali
maa sheronwaali
o maa sheronwaali

doori mita de
maa se mila de
ya meri maa ka roop tu dhar le
roop tu dhar le
roop tu dhar le
oooooo ooooo
oooooo ooooo
oooooo ooooo

आsss आssss
आsss आssss

आssss
आssss
आssss
आssss
आssss
आssss

ओssss ओssssss
ओssss ओssssss
ओssss ओssssss
ओssss ओssssss
