Hullo Atuldom

Remembering our very own Abhas Kumar Ganguly with this post on his death anniversary. It is 34 years since he bade goodbye to this mortal world but his works are still with us- his fans and followers.

He was a versatile singer, actor, writer, producer, director, composer etc. In short an all-rounder who was the voice of many generations of actors beginning with Dev Anand for whom his voice was first used in 1948. World over, lovers of Hindi film music just love and adore this artiste and he himself was a huge fan of the actor-singer of the early-talkies and films of the ’30s and ’40s- K.L. Saigal. Abhas Kumar Ganguly had a great respect for the poet/ musician Rabindranath Tagore.

He could sing an ‘eena meena deeka’ with the same ease as he sang ‘koi humdum na raha koi sahara na raha’. His fans loved his voice on Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Jeetendra and every single actor that graced the silver-screen from 1948 (when he made his debut) to 1987 (till death took him away from us). There were some actors of the older generation (meaning ’50s and ’60s) who had other singers as their permanent go-to voice; but Kishore Kumar (as Abhas Kumar Ganguly was popularly called) sang for these people in the later part of their careers- post 1970, I mean to say. Kishoreda’s voice was used for the next generation of actors too meaning Dharam’s son Sunny, Rajendra Kumar’s son Kumar Gaurav, Sunil Dutt’s son Sanjay Dutt , and all of Raj Kapoor’s sons etc. in addition to the new entrant actors of the ’70s and ’80s like Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff etc. I have a feeling that if he had been around then the Khans of the ’90s would have sounded different but that was not to be.

It is Sharad Navaratri and so I searched for a song/mata bhajan to go with this post. I am not sure how many songs Kishoreda has sung in this genre, but I do remember there are a few under Bappi Lahiri and Laxmi Pyare’s music direction in some ‘made in South India’ films.
Today’s is from the 1986 release “Swarag Se Sundar”. On-screen Jaya Prada and Jeetendra lip-sync to Kishoreda and Lata didi and appeal to the Devi maa to cure the child of their family, of whatever ailment it is suffering from; the “dawa ki nahin, dua ki zaroorat hai” situation (I have seen this movie a few times over the years, the child is shown to have high fever).

“Swarag Se Sundar” was a movie directed by K. Bapaiah, had dialogues by Kadar Khan, songs written by Anand Bakshi and Laxmi-Pyare were the music composers. Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar were the playback singers used. Mithun Chakraborty and Padmini Kolhapure played the second couple with Shubha Khote, Aruna Irani, Shoma Anand, Kadar Khan, Prem Chopra, Asrani, Bharat Bhushan, Satyen Kappu etc in supporting cast.
