Today’s song is from the movie ‘Kaamnaa’ (1972). I had never heard of this movie earlier. I became aware of this movie only through HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980).

The star cast as listed in Geet Kosh includes Suma, Dinesh Rai, Sajan, Sonal, Darpan, Shambhu Mukherjee, Kailash Sharma, Gopal Bhatnagar, Ranjana, Usha, Sarita Devi, Preetam, Prem Roop, Samajeet, Prakash, Sudhanshu, Anil, Shyam, Manik, Sadanand, Udayveer, Prem, Mirchandani, BK Mukherjee, Sudhir, Satish, Namdev, Awasthi, Krishna, Satyadeep, and others. Anupama had a guest appearance in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.07.1972

This movie has three songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed to music by Usha Khanna. The list of songs in this movie is as given below (as provided in HFGK).

I have not watched this movie so can’t say much about it. Today’s song is sung by Usha Khanna and Chitra Singh and picturised on two actresses whom I am unable to identify, and many other artistes are seen in the picturisation of this song.
[Ed Note: The two dancers are Anupama (in orange dress) and Habiba Rehman (in blue dress). Thanks to Prakash ji for the identification.]

Here is the alphabetical list of movies of 1972 up to today’s movie, which is the 61st film in this list.
[Ed Note: In the interest of brevity, the list is collapsed to show the films onward from the previous episode in the series , namely ‘Gaaon Hamaara Shehar Tumhaara’ plus the ones that are without any available information or songs. Readers may refer to previous episodes of this series for earlier details – “Nai Hawa Mein Udne Dekho Ban Ka Mor Chala“.]

Note: – Songs for ‘Bachche Mere Saathi’, ‘Gunfighter Johny’ and ‘Hunterwaali’ seems to be unavailable as of now. And there is no information about the songs in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) for the movies – ‘Aakraant’, ‘Bharat Darshan’, ‘Fighter Sheela’ and ‘Jaadoo Nagari’ as mentioned above.

Today’s song from the movie ‘Kaamnaa’ is sung by Usha Khanna and Chitra Singh. Music is composed by Usha Khanna. The video and audio versions have common ‘first stanza’ of the song but the second stanza in both the version is different.

As mentioned above I am unable to identify the artistes. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy the today’s lovely song…

Blog Day :

4454 Post No. : 15921

In my last three articles, I have discussed Hindi film dancers, Mohana Cabral, Sheila Vaz and Minu Mumtaz. One common factor in all the three dancers was that they had active Hindi film careers of around 5-6 years after which they got married and quit Hindi films when they had not even attained 25 years of age. They took the responsibilities as house-wives and lived happily with more or less the same level of comfort and life style as they would have got had they continued their filmy careers. To this list of three Hindi film dancers, I am adding one more dancer who also quit Hindi films after her active years of Hindi film career during 1960-66. The name of the dancer is Jeevankala. She got married in 1969 when she was 25.

I got background information on Jeevankala from her two interviews – one in 1964 which was published in ‘Picture Post’ magazine and republished in ‘Cineplot’ on January 1, 2012. The other interview was of recent origin which was taken by Shishir Krishna Sharma in December 2018 and published in his Blog, ‘Beete Hue Din’ on March 31, 2020. Based on these two interviews, the main highlights of the profile of Jeevankala and her journey with Hindi film industry are given below:

Jeevankala (also written as Jeevan Kala) was born on June 29, 1944 at Pune to Dattatreya and Gangubai who were actors in silent films and later in Marathi films when sound films started in 1931. However, after Jeevankala was born, the parents gave up their film career. Incidentally, the name, ‘Jeevankala’ was suggested by her neighbour, Lata Mangeshkar. Jeevankala did her primary schooling in Pune. Simultaneously, knowing his daughter’s interest in dances, the father put her under the tutelage of Babsaheb Gokhale for Kathak dance and Professor Gaekwad for Bharatnatayam dance for a period of 7 years. Later, she learnt all other formats of dances by herself.

In 1957, Jeevankala’s family shifted to Mumbai as she got a job of assiatant dance teacher in Bharatiya Vidhya Bhawan and taught Kathak dance to students. She was also participating in Lata Mangeshkar’s musical shows in Mumbai in which she used to give her dance recitals. She also attended the night school and completed her Matric in 1960.

In one of Jeevankala’s dance recitals, producer-director K Amarnath saw her skill in dancing and offered her a role of a dancer in his film, ’Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959) in which she had two dance songs. However, she also said that ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959) was her debut film in which a song “Akhiyaan Bhool Gayi Hain Sona” was picturised on her. [As per her filmography, she had already acted in 8 films during 1956-58. I will come to it later].

After she was noticed in her dance skills in ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959) and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959), Jeevankala started getting many films offers. Starting as a dancer, over a period of time, she started getting character actor’s roles and also romantic roles pairing with comedians. She also got the role of a vamp in ‘Mr. X in Bombay’ (1964) and ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968).

In 1969, Jeevankala got married to Ram Kelkar, the story, screen-play and dialogue writer in Marathi films. It was a marriage arranged by Sulochana Latkar who was like ‘God Mother’ to her after the death of her mother in 1965. After marriage, Jeevankala quit the film industry. Her husband, Ram Kelkar became a successful story, screen-play and dialogue writers for Hindi films like ‘Beimaan’ (1972), ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ (1974), ‘Sanyaasi’ (1975), Kaalicharan’ (1976), ‘Asha’ (1980), ‘Hero’ (1983), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989), ‘Khalnaayak’ (1993) etc.

On the basis of Jeevankala’s filmography checked from the various sources, I have been able to list 110 Hindi films in which she worked during 1956 to 1968. A few films of her were released late up to 1974. Her active years of film career was during 1960-1966, appearing in 70 films. In the 1964 interview, Jeevankala gave the impression of ‘Kal Hamara Hai’ (1959) as her first Hindi film and in the 2018 interview, she mentioned ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959) as her debut film. It is interesting to note that in ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ (1959), Jeevankala has not been accredited in the credit titles of the film. But she appears in one song of the film.

A further interesting observation about Jeevankala’s filmography is that before 1959, she had worked in as many as 8 films which include ‘Alam Ara’ (1956), ‘Paristaan’ (1957), ‘Khota Paisa’ (1958) and ‘Detective’ (1958). In ‘Khota Paisa’ (1958), a dance song “O Jaan e Jaan Muddat Ke Baad” has been picturised on her.

Jeevankala, who started with big banners film producing companies like Prakash Pictures’ ‘Goonj Uthi Shahnai’ (1959) and K Amarnath Productions’ ‘Kal Hamaara Hai’ (1959), drifted into ‘B’ grade movies in the genres of fantasy, action, costume drama, thriller etc. In such films, heroes would be like Sheikh Mukhtar, Ranjan, Daljeet, Dara Singh and heroines would be like Chitra, Vijaya Chowdhary, Parveen Chowdhary, Nishi etc. Of course, she also continued to be associated with big banner films like ‘China Town’ (1962), ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963), ‘Mere Sanam’ (1965), ‘Khandaan’ (1965), ‘Himalaya Ki God Mein’ (1965), ‘Saawan Ki Ghata’ (1966), ‘Saraswatichandra’ (1968) etc.

Jeevankala has also worked in some Marathi films. In ‘Putra Whava Aisa’ (1961), she was in lead role opposite Vivek in which an immortal song,  जिथे सागरा धरणी मिळते beautifully rendered by Suman Kalyanpur was picturised on Jeevankala. A laavani  song, रेशमाच्या रेघांनी, लाल काळया धाग्यांनी from ‘Marathi Tituka Melwava’ (1964) was also picturised on Jeevankala as a laavani dancer.

In the interview of December 2018, Jeevankala has claimed that about 70 songs have been picturised on her. Our Blog has covered 38 songs picturised on her and 17 songs, the video clips of which are available on video sharing platforms are yet to be covered on the Blog. Thus, the total songs picturised on Jeevankala works out to 55. In addition, there could be a few more of her songs for which video clips are not available as some of her films are not traceable as of now.

During the listing of songs picturised on Jeevankala, I came across an obscure  film ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965) (In the credit titles it is written as ‘पंच-रतन’ in Hindi) which was directed by Kamran. The star cast consisted of Randhawa, Parveen Chowdhary, Kamran, Kamal Mehra, Amarnath, Shyam Kumar, Randhir, Sadhana Khote, Jeevankala, Laxmi Chhaya, Meenaxi, Aruna etc. The full film is available for viewing in HD quality and it belongs to the ‘Action-Costume Drama’ genre. Probably, this film was meant for those audience who used to enjoy wrestling bouts between Dara Singh, King Kong and others in the 60s at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, Worli in Mumbai. In addition, there are sword fights in the film for such audience.

The film has 5 songs written by 2 lyricists – Anjaan (4) and Upendra (1). I am presenting the song, “Kya Ho. . . Kahin Miley Do Nigaahen” from ‘Panch Ratan’ (1965). The song is rendered by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot and is picturised on Laxmi Chhaya and Jeevankala, respectively. In the audience, Parveen Chowdhary,  Randhawa, Kamal Mehra, Meenaxi and Shyam Kumar can be seen among others.

The song is written by Anjaan which is set to music by Sardar Malik.

Song – Kya Ho. . Haaye Kya Ho (Panch Ratan) (1965) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Kamal Barot, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Sardar Malik

Blog Day : 4206 Post No. : 15400

Regulars of this blog must have got used to the fact that only one or two “new” songs get discussed daily in this blog and that is all. But oldtimer regulars would recall days of yore when six to seven songs were discussed in a day. On occasions, I had the mortification of being admonished by a subscriber to the blog. “I am a music lover but not so much that I can tolerate getting a song post notification every hour”- he stated. He must have registered for the blog on those days when I was able to post even twelve and thirteen posts in a day. 🙂

This is the fifth post of the day. Going by the present sedate ways of the blog, it is rather unusual. The last time this blog had 5 posts in a day was on 17 march 2019. That was the only such occurrence in the blog in 2019. In comparison, 2018 saw 37 such days. In 2012, when the blog was operating at a Sehwag like strike rate, we had 60 such days. As many as eight songs were covered daily on 39 days in 2012 !

So temporarily, it is feeling like old days for me. But today the reason for this suddenly found enthusiasm is that I want to complete the 154th century writeup of the blog before the weekend, when the going will get tough as far as posting articles is concerned.

I find that the blogging mindset is different when one is posting many posts in a day vis a vis the situation when one intends to post just one write-up. In discussing just one (or two) song in a day, we take a conservative approach. We basically become status quo-ist. On the other hand, when one posts many songs in a day one acts like an adventur-ist.

A conservative man would get defeated by the weather conditions (cold foggy winters) while an adventurist man would wake up early and go on a morning walk when the entire world is hiding under razaai. I find that even on this count I have become an adventurist. For the last few days, I have started going on a morning walk come fog or cold. No, I have not done it voluntarily. It is my pet Chhote who has suddenly become fond of being taken for a walk. So he insists that I take him for a walk in the morning, in the afternoon, and in fact all the time. So now I have started to wake up early, and have started walking early morning, often in chilly low visibility foggy conditions. And after that, I have begun to feel like a million dollars. This winter weather is not so daunting, I have rediscovered. I in fact regularly used to wake up even earlier (at 5 AM) during my stay at Bareilly. So now I am rediscovering my old self when I used to be more determined, and less conservative.

And that determination may well have been getting reflected here in the blog today. 🙂 It is the fifth and final song for the day. and I am realising that covering so many posts in a day is not all that tough. 🙂

In the process, I ended up listeing to lots and lots of songs yesterday night (as I used to do earlier) and I rediscovered the pleasures of stumbling upon gems after musical gems. Yesterday, Sudhir Jee asked me if I had any particular song in mind for this century post and I replied in negative. Within a few hours, I was spoilt for choice ! I discovered so many great songs that I had never heard before. and that is the situation when I may have already heard more that 15400 plus songs !

This song is from “Choron Ka Chaor” (1970). This forgotten movie was a stunt movie which was produced and directed by Muhammad Hussain for MH Films, Bombay. The movie had Dara Singh, Shabnam, Madan Puri, Shetty, Agha, Bhagwan, Roopesh Kumar, Jayshree T, Randheer, Meena, Neelam, Paro Devi, Gul Hamid, Kamini Devi, Shefali, Jerry, Anjum, Dada Kurte, Moolchand, Dilip Dagi, Sabir, V Gopal, Vishwas Kunte, Master Ripple, Indira Bansal, Habeeb, Trilok Singh, Tiger Abdullah etc. in it.

The movie had four forgotten songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from the movie. This song is one that I had never heard before. It is sung by two female singers who are better known as sisters of their more famous singing sisters. Most of the time they used to get duets with more celebrated singers. Here these two relatively ‘unsung’ singers are given an opportunity to carry a song on their own shoulders. And I must say that the song is just FANTASTIC. Too bad that this song has been forgotten. Or may be it was not even heard by public. I know for sure that I had never heard this song before.

A fantastic song that we are covering as the 15400th song post in the blog. Only the audio of the song is available. Even the audio is quite rare to come by. This song deserves better treatment.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song. This song sounds like a synchronized dance song performed by two female dancers in a ‘Villain’s den’ situation.

This song also marks the 100th song of Farooque Kaiser in the blog as a lyricist. Quite a befitting song to bring up his 100th song in the blog ! He becomes the 30th lyricist and 98th artist overall to complete a century of songs in the blog.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for the continuous support and encouragement that has ensured continuous existence of this blog for over 4200 days (4206 days to be precise ! ). Let us hope that we will see many more such landmarks, and that the frequency of these landmarks will go up as was the case in the past.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 44
——————————————————————————————

Seven songs were posted ten years ago. The blog was in its childhood – “Bachpan Ke Din Bhi Kya Din The” 🙂  🙂 .

Only one of these seven was a debut song. The list given below has an interesting observation. All films that made an appearance that day, have since been yippeee’d. Except just the one that made its debut.

Ye Duniya Hai Yahaan Dil Ka Lagaana Kisko Aata Hai Shair 1949 2nd  Yippeee’d
Aaj Gaawat Man Mero Baiju Baawra 1952 6th  Yippeee’d
Ae Kaash Chalte Mil Ke Manzil 1960 3rd  Yippeee’d
Ek Baat Kahoon Wallah Ye Husn Subhan Allah Shrimaan Satyawaadi 1960 2nd  Yippeee’d
Dukh Aur Sukh Ke Raaste Bane Hain Sabke Waaste Hum Dono 1961 5th  Yippeee’d
Aap Jabse Kareeb Aaye Hain Noorjehaan 1967 Deb 3 of 8
Zindagi Khwaab Hai Jaagte Raho 1956 2nd  Yippeee’d

The film is ‘Noorjehaan’ from 1967. Containing eight very wonderful melodies, it is surprising that only three of them have as yet appeared here. With compositions created by the mind of Roshan, there still are very wonderful numbers waiting in the wings for their turn.

I bring on the 4th song of this film today. An all female duet which is decidedly a twin dance song on the screen, is such a wonderful presentation in the voices of Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. The words are from the pen of Shakeel Sb.

Although the film is available, the video of this song is not yet available online. The interesting thing is that this audio only version which is available from Sa Re Ga Ma, is most likely the long version of the song from the sound track. It has three antaraas. As I checked the 78 rpm version of this song, sure enough, it has only two antaraas. The middle antaraa, as listed in the lyrics below, is not available in the 78 rpm recording.

The act of rebellion is the famous motif of the saga of Salim / Jehangir. That the crown and the throne was less important, in the face of the matters of heart, with this heir to the throne of Delhi. A school of historians who have studied the Mughal dynasty, have an opinion – that the persona of Anarkali and that of Noorjehan, that we have been introduced through the pages of history, were probably the same person. The thought here is that eventually Akbar had to give in to the wishes of his only son and Anarkali, the court dancer, became the queen of the Mughal empire. Although, Akbar had his consolation by ensuring that the chronicles of that period, being documented by the then current historians and writers, would write the story as he demanded. Is it speculation? Or is it the truth? Maybe one will never know for certain.

Song – Aa Gaya Lab Pe Afsaana-e-Aashiqi  (Noorjehaan) (1967) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Shakeel Badayuni, MD – Roshan

ab kisi bhi fasaane ki parwaah nahin

Blog Day :

4053 Post No. : 15183

22nd August (yesterday) was the remembrance day of the exceptional, yet unsung music director – Ram Prasad Sharma. He had passed away this day in 1995. May be not easily identifiable by himself, he is probably known more through his sons. His four sons have all been well known musicians and instrumentalists, and all have been connected with the film industry. Two of them are also famous as music directors – Pyaarelal ji, of the Laxmikant Pyaarelal duo, and Ganesh.

Ram Prasad’s biographical and filmographic details have been presented earlier on this blog, in the article on the song “Antul Habi Ke Dekho Kabhi” from the film ‘Magic Carpet’, released in 1964. There is also a detailed article by our dear Arun ji, posted here on the blog – Anmol Fankaar.

Today’s song is also from the same film – ‘Magic Carpet’. The film is directed by Babubhai Mistry, under the banner of Unique Pictures, Bombay. This is stunt cum fantasy film – a typical ‘jaadugar sainyyaan’ type film. The cast of actors includes Chitra, Azaad, Bhagwan, BM Vyas, Bela Bose, Dalpat, Kesri, Bimla Kashmiri, and a host of junior artists, listed as Aroon, Maqbool, Radhe Shyam, Arvind Kumar, Mehroo Bai, Bakshi, Master Kisore, Kalla, Rafiq, Sandow, Dawood, Amir, Musa, Julian, Khalil, Rehman, Salim, Zippy and Nagina.

The film has five songs which are penned by four songwriters – Farooque Kaiser, Shakeel Nomaani, Arsh Farooque and Jia Dehalvi. This song is written by Jia Dehalvi – as the pseudonym suggests, he is from Delhi. 🙂 Music is by Ram Prasad Sharma. The singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle.

On screen, the song is performed as a twin dance, with both dancers lip syncing the playback from Asha. The dancers are Chitra and Bela Bose. Now, I am not completely certain, and am open for being corrected. Some familiarity with the performers and the absence of any other name that sounds like a dancer, in the list of actors given above. I request other more knowledgeable friends in the group to please correct or confirm. 🙂

There are two other gentlemen in the frame. I request for help to identify them, as I do not yet have access to software that will help to remove the beards from the faces of men in video clips. 😀 😀 Given the names in the list of actors, I believe one of them could be Dalpat. Please help to identify them.

A lilting dance song this one. Listening to this song, I can hear the sources of inspiration for the torrent of music that flowed from the works of L-P. This, and many others like this from B and C grade films of 1950s and 1960s, form a string of very pleasing memories from the radio listening days. I am sure you will enjoy this.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 9
————————————————

Great idea this, the ten year challenge series. Works as a great reminder across the years and makes us pay attention to films and songs that have been waiting in the wings for a long time.

Today, I pick that lovely little film from 1965 – ‘Akashdeep’. It had made its debut on our blog ten years ago today – 26th Feb, 2009. Dharmendra was a very fresh face, just about four or five years into his career that year, and Nanda was somewhat senior. Ashok Kumar plays the role of a right thinking but apparently an abrasive mill owner and businessman, with Nimmi in the role of his mute wife. Mehmood plays the younger brother of Ashok Kumar, with Shobha Khote as his wife. Mehmood and his family lives separately from his brother, in relative poverty – he runs a small tea shop. The story of the film is woven around a village community where the mill is major work provider – the story of the workers in conflict with the wealthy capitalists. The film has a socialist message. Ashok Kumar’s intentions are always good, but he is impatient with the people who do not understand his viewpoint. After the conflict, the story comes to a happy ending with Ashok Kumar transforming the factory into a co-operative, giving equal shares to all the workers.

The film has some really memorable songs penned by Majrooh Sb and tuned to wonderful melodies by Chitragupt. We have “Dil Ka Diya Jalaa Ke Gaya”, an enchanting Lata solo played on the gramophone player in the film – the song that introduces Nimmi to Ashok Kumar; then the ecstatic rendition by Rafi Sb – “. . . Mujhe Aap Kis Liye Mil Gaye”, presented on screen by Dharmendra in a soft late evening setting, by the waters of a lake; the lovely duet by Lata and Mahendra Kapoor – “Suniye Jaana. . .” – on screen Dharmendra and Nanda; and the lilting springy Lata solo again – “Miley To Phir Jhuke Nahin. . .” performed by Nanda next to the seashore, late evening setting once again. I list these four songs, for these are the most popular songs of this film and all of them are already showcased here on our blog.

Besides these, there are four more songs in this film. Two of the songs are of the social messaging type, one is a parody song performed as a stage presentation, and the fourth pending song is an all female duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. As I checked out the online availability, I am surprised to note that this Asha-Usha duet song is not available anywhere. I was curious, for I could not recall having heard this song before. So, pulling it out of my collection, as I played it, I am completely bowled over by the melody construct that Chitragupt has weaved around the words of Mahrooh, and presented it as a twin dance song. Absolutely fresh and lovely presentation, even after more than sixty years.

‘Akashdeep’ is directed by Phani Majumdar – and coincidentally, we have a write up on this talented director published just yesterday by Sadanand ji, with the song “Taaron Se Akhiyaan Milaaun Main”.

So, presenting the fifth song of this film. A very less heard melody, which I am sure you will fancy immediately. Cheers and happy listening.

Missing Films of 1960s – 83
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A delectable discovery, this wonderful duet of Asha ji and Usha ji. And one more film of the 1960s gets added to our blog today.

‘Tarzan 303’ – I was not even aware of this film before I started working on this series. And even now, no information is available, except what is there in the Geet Kosh. Indian film producers have a set fascination for the theme of Tarzan. From 1931 to 1980, no less than 15 films have been produced which contain ‘Tarzan’ in their title. And there probably are some more after 1980 also.

The film being introduced today is a production from the banner of Bhanu Films, Bombay and is directed by Chandrakant. There are four songs listed for this film. All songs are from the pen of Prem Dhawan, and the music composition is by Harish Dhawan. No information about this music director is forthcoming. As per Geet Kosh, this seems to be the only film for which he has composed the music. I do not know if he is in any way connected with Prem Dhawan. I would request our more knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this unknown music director, as well as about this film.

The cast of actors is listed as Master Chandgiram, Shabnam, K N Singh, Tiwari, Azad, Renu, Johnny Whisky, Bhupendra, Lata Arora, Ravi Singh, Dilip Dutt, Rani Malini, Rajni, Uttam Kumar, V K Verma, Hameed, Khalid, Ramlal Pehalwan, Sato Pehalwan, Rambabu Pehalwan, R Chandra, Ridku, Rizvi, Ramchandra, and Shakeela Bano Bhopali. Quite a standard fare, as expected for a stunt film in the 1960s. Master Chandgi Ram is the name that stands out as a new name. I have presented his brief biosketch in my earlier post from this series itself, when I presented the song “Neele Ambar Se Tumhaare Liye Aayi” of the film ‘Veer Gatotkach’ (1970). Apparently he has appeared only in three films on record, the third one being ‘Maha Shivratri’ from 1972.

The song presented today is a delightful duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. Quite a quick paced rendition for what seems to be a twin dance song on the screen. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Haaye Haaye Tera Jawaab Kahaan  (Tarzan 303) (1970) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Harish Dhawan
Asha Bhosle + Usha Mangeshkar

Lyrics

haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

neend aati nahin hai sanam
hamen to ab raaton mein
neend aati nahin hai sanam
hamen to ab raaton mein
baithe rehte hain hum raat bhar
ye dil liye haathon mein
kabhi to dekho idhar
meri jaan bas ik nazar
chaahne waale tere hain hum dilruba
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

sab pe aate jawaani ki din
magar yun na aate hain
sab pe aate jawaani ki din
magar yun na aate hain
dekh le tujhko jo ek jhalak
nazar na hataate hain
jawaani chadhti rahe
khumaari badhti rahe
deten hain ye duaaen tujhe hum sada
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

Missing Films of 1960s – 82
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Our journey of missing 1960s films continues. Coming to the next film – this one is ‘Veer Amar Singh Rathaur’ from 1970.

This film is from the banner of Sudarshan Chitra, Bombay, and is directed by Radhakant. The cast of actors listed for this film are Dev Kumar, Kumkum, Zeb Rehman, Tiwari, Jeevan, Kamal Kapoor, Johnny Whisky, and Jeevankala amongst others.

A film by this title was also made in 1957 – a slight variation in name – it was titled ‘Amar Singh Rathaur’. The earlier film had Jairaj and Nirupa Roy in lead roles. And it had 12 songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyay. The 1970 reprisal has Dev Kumar and Kum Kum in lead roles. And this version has 14 songs all written and composed by Prem Dhawan.

There is possibly another film by this name, released later than 1980, but I am not very certain.

Prem Dhawan, who is known much better as a songwriter, has also worked as a music director for about 15 to 18 films during is career, about 5 of which are Punjabi films. He has mostly worked as a composer for films for which he also has written the songs. In one film, he has composed songs written by Kavi Pradeep (for ‘Kisaan Aur Bhagwa’, 1974) and for one more film, he has composed songs written by Ali Sardar Jafri (for ‘Naxalites’, 1980).

Only the audio of this song is available, but from listening to it, one can surmise that this song is a twin dance song. The singing voices in this all female duet are of Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. I request other readers and friends who may have seen this film, to please add more information about this song, and the film.

A very peppy dance song, that talks about the ill effects of falling in love, and also of the sweet emotions. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Akhiyan Mila Ke Akhiyan  (Veer Amar Singh Rathaur) (1970) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Prem Dhawan
Asha Bhosle + Usha Mangeshkar

Lyrics

ho akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
ho main to baaz aai
ho main to pachhtaai

haaye
ke nagar bhool chali

haaye
bhooli jaati hain bachpan ki sakhiyaan

haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

haaye ye meethi meethi jalan
pyaar kehta hai jis ko zamaana
ab to jitna tadapta hai dil
dard lagta hai utna suhaana
unhin ki baat sochun
haaye
yahi din raat sochun

haaye
kaise un se kahun dil ki batiyaan

haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

koi leta hai jab unka naam
mann hi mann jhoom leti hoon main to
jaane kyon dekh ke aainaa
apna munh choom leti hoon main to
ke khud hi likhti rahoon
haaye
ke khud hi padhti rahoon
oy
jaane kitni hi pyaar bhari patiyaan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

o main to baaz aai
o main to pachhtaai
ke jaagun ab saari saari ratiyaan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

Missing Films of 1960s – 80
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Aha, good going at 80. If I am lucky, I may get to a century with this series. 🙂

Today’s film is just about at the bottom of the decade. The film name is ‘Ye Khoon Rang Laayega’ from 1970. Considering the alphabetic listing scheme by year, you will find this film at the second last position in GK volume no. 4 (of the regular set of Hindi films of that decade).

Once again, a song that has been sitting in my collection for oh so long. Picked it up today and listened to it for the first time. Music director – Robin Bannerji. And I just do not seem to be getting enough listen of this song. What a wonderful twin dance duet – voices are Usha Mangeshkar and Krishna Kalle. K Kalle’s voice seems to be somewhat subdued in the company of the razor sharp voice of Usha M. But together, they are a magic weaved by the music director. Listening to such songs, one always is left with a craving – wish Robin Bannerji had done more films in his career. But that was not to be. Most of the decade of the 1970s and part of 1980s, was lost in battling ill health, compounded by two unfortunate accidents. He passed away on 27th July, 1986.

The film is from the banner of Sanjay Films, Bombay and is directed by Roshan Bhardwaj. The six listed songs are penned by two lyricists – Anjaan and Yogesh – honor shared equally. This song is written by Yogesh. The star cast of the film is interesting – Helen, Randhawa, Mukri, SK Prem, Uma Dutt, Gul Hamid, Shaam Kumar, Saudagar Singh, Dhanraj, Ridku, Ratnamala, Lalita Desai, Sushma, Poonam Kapoor, Ishwar Bhai, Khurshid Khan, Kesari, Madhumati, Rani, and Lakshmichaya amongst others.

Let’s listen to this wonderfully crafted all female duet. And let’s continue to wonder – about these lesser known but highly talented artists.

Song – Qayaamat Hai Teri Nigaahon Ka Jaadu  (Ye Khoon Rang Laayega) (1970) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Robin Bannerji
Usha Mangeshkar + Krishna Kalle

Lyrics

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu

hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba

nahin jab raha mujhko khud pe hi kaabu
nahin jab raha mujhko khud pe hi kaabu

hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga

aap ki har adaa
marhabaa marhabaa
ik nasha saah mein
ho gaya ba-khuda
haaye ye kya baat hui
khoob mulaqaat hui
dhadke mera dil deewaana
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba

aap ki shokhiyaan
hain ghazab meharbaan
aap kya hans padey
gir gayin bijliyaan
haaye meri jaan gayi
main tujhe maan gayi
chhodo bhi ye muskuraana
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba
