Missing Films of 1960s – 83
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

A delectable discovery, this wonderful duet of Asha ji and Usha ji. And one more film of the 1960s gets added to our blog today.

‘Tarzan 303’ – I was not even aware of this film before I started working on this series. And even now, no information is available, except what is there in the Geet Kosh. Indian film producers have a set fascination for the theme of Tarzan. From 1931 to 1980, no less than 15 films have been produced which contain ‘Tarzan’ in their title. And there probably are some more after 1980 also.

The film being introduced today is a production from the banner of Bhanu Films, Bombay and is directed by Chandrakant. There are four songs listed for this film. All songs are from the pen of Prem Dhawan, and the music composition is by Harish Dhawan. No information about this music director is forthcoming. As per Geet Kosh, this seems to be the only film for which he has composed the music. I do not know if he is in any way connected with Prem Dhawan. I would request our more knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this unknown music director, as well as about this film.

The cast of actors is listed as Master Chandgiram, Shabnam, K N Singh, Tiwari, Azad, Renu, Johnny Whisky, Bhupendra, Lata Arora, Ravi Singh, Dilip Dutt, Rani Malini, Rajni, Uttam Kumar, V K Verma, Hameed, Khalid, Ramlal Pehalwan, Sato Pehalwan, Rambabu Pehalwan, R Chandra, Ridku, Rizvi, Ramchandra, and Shakeela Bano Bhopali. Quite a standard fare, as expected for a stunt film in the 1960s. Master Chandgi Ram is the name that stands out as a new name. I have presented his brief biosketch in my earlier post from this series itself, when I presented the song “Neele Ambar Se Tumhaare Liye Aayi” of the film ‘Veer Gatotkach’ (1970). Apparently he has appeared only in three films on record, the third one being ‘Maha Shivratri’ from 1972.

The song presented today is a delightful duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. Quite a quick paced rendition for what seems to be a twin dance song on the screen. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Haaye Haaye Tera Jawaab Kahaan  (Tarzan 303) (1970) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Harish Dhawan
Asha Bhosle + Usha Mangeshkar

Lyrics

haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

neend aati nahin hai sanam
hamen to ab raaton mein
neend aati nahin hai sanam
hamen to ab raaton mein
baithe rehte hain hum raat bhar
ye dil liye haathon mein
kabhi to dekho idhar
meri jaan bas ik nazar
chaahne waale tere hain hum dilruba
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

sab pe aate jawaani ki din
magar yun na aate hain
sab pe aate jawaani ki din
magar yun na aate hain
dekh le tujhko jo ek jhalak
nazar na hataate hain
jawaani chadhti rahe
khumaari badhti rahe
deten hain ye duaaen tujhe hum sada
haaye haaye tera jawaab kahaan
aisa shabaab kahaan
tauba ye jalwa tera
haaye haaye main mar gai
tauba ye jalwa tera

Missing Films of 1960s – 82
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Our journey of missing 1960s films continues. Coming to the next film – this one is ‘Veer Amar Singh Rathaur’ from 1970.

This film is from the banner of Sudarshan Chitra, Bombay, and is directed by Radhakant. The cast of actors listed for this film are Dev Kumar, Kumkum, Zeb Rehman, Tiwari, Jeevan, Kamal Kapoor, Johnny Whisky, and Jeevankala amongst others.

A film by this title was also made in 1957 – a slight variation in name – it was titled ‘Amar Singh Rathaur’. The earlier film had Jairaj and Nirupa Roy in lead roles. And it had 12 songs written by Bharat Vyas and composed by Sanmukh Babu Upadhyay. The 1970 reprisal has Dev Kumar and Kum Kum in lead roles. And this version has 14 songs all written and composed by Prem Dhawan.

There is possibly another film by this name, released later than 1980, but I am not very certain.

Prem Dhawan, who is known much better as a songwriter, has also worked as a music director for about 15 to 18 films during is career, about 5 of which are Punjabi films. He has mostly worked as a composer for films for which he also has written the songs. In one film, he has composed songs written by Kavi Pradeep (for ‘Kisaan Aur Bhagwa’, 1974) and for one more film, he has composed songs written by Ali Sardar Jafri (for ‘Naxalites’, 1980).

Only the audio of this song is available, but from listening to it, one can surmise that this song is a twin dance song. The singing voices in this all female duet are of Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. I request other readers and friends who may have seen this film, to please add more information about this song, and the film.

A very peppy dance song, that talks about the ill effects of falling in love, and also of the sweet emotions. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Akhiyan Mila Ke Akhiyan  (Veer Amar Singh Rathaur) (1970) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Prem Dhawan, MD – Prem Dhawan
Asha Bhosle + Usha Mangeshkar

Lyrics

ho akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
ho main to baaz aai
ho main to pachhtaai

haaye
ke nagar bhool chali

haaye
bhooli jaati hain bachpan ki sakhiyaan

haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

haaye ye meethi meethi jalan
pyaar kehta hai jis ko zamaana
ab to jitna tadapta hai dil
dard lagta hai utna suhaana
unhin ki baat sochun
haaye
yahi din raat sochun

haaye
kaise un se kahun dil ki batiyaan

haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

koi leta hai jab unka naam
mann hi mann jhoom leti hoon main to
jaane kyon dekh ke aainaa
apna munh choom leti hoon main to
ke khud hi likhti rahoon
haaye
ke khud hi padhti rahoon
oy
jaane kitni hi pyaar bhari patiyaan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

o main to baaz aai
o main to pachhtaai
ke jaagun ab saari saari ratiyaan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan
haaye re akhiyaan mila ke akhiyan

Missing Films of 1960s – 80
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Aha, good going at 80. If I am lucky, I may get to a century with this series. 🙂

Today’s film is just about at the bottom of the decade. The film name is ‘Ye Khoon Rang Laayega’ from 1970. Considering the alphabetic listing scheme by year, you will find this film at the second last position in GK volume no. 4 (of the regular set of Hindi films of that decade).

Once again, a song that has been sitting in my collection for oh so long. Picked it up today and listened to it for the first time. Music director – Robin Bannerji. And I just do not seem to be getting enough listen of this song. What a wonderful twin dance duet – voices are Usha Mangeshkar and Krishna Kalle. K Kalle’s voice seems to be somewhat subdued in the company of the razor sharp voice of Usha M. But together, they are a magic weaved by the music director. Listening to such songs, one always is left with a craving – wish Robin Bannerji had done more films in his career. But that was not to be. Most of the decade of the 1970s and part of 1980s, was lost in battling ill health, compounded by two unfortunate accidents. He passed away on 27th July, 1986.

The film is from the banner of Sanjay Films, Bombay and is directed by Roshan Bhardwaj. The six listed songs are penned by two lyricists – Anjaan and Yogesh – honor shared equally. This song is written by Yogesh. The star cast of the film is interesting – Helen, Randhawa, Mukri, SK Prem, Uma Dutt, Gul Hamid, Shaam Kumar, Saudagar Singh, Dhanraj, Ridku, Ratnamala, Lalita Desai, Sushma, Poonam Kapoor, Ishwar Bhai, Khurshid Khan, Kesari, Madhumati, Rani, and Lakshmichaya amongst others.

Let’s listen to this wonderfully crafted all female duet. And let’s continue to wonder – about these lesser known but highly talented artists.

Song – Qayaamat Hai Teri Nigaahon Ka Jaadu  (Ye Khoon Rang Laayega) (1970) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Robin Bannerji
Usha Mangeshkar + Krishna Kalle

Lyrics

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu

qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu

hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba

nahin jab raha mujhko khud pe hi kaabu
nahin jab raha mujhko khud pe hi kaabu

hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga

aap ki har adaa
marhabaa marhabaa
ik nasha saah mein
ho gaya ba-khuda
haaye ye kya baat hui
khoob mulaqaat hui
dhadke mera dil deewaana
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba

aap ki shokhiyaan
hain ghazab meharbaan
aap kya hans padey
gir gayin bijliyaan
haaye meri jaan gayi
main tujhe maan gayi
chhodo bhi ye muskuraana
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
qayaamat hai teri nigaahon ka jaadu..oo..oo
hai tauba tauba khuda jaane dil ko kya hoga
kya hoga
tauba
tauba

Missing Films of 1960s – 75
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘Thief Of Baghdad’ – a movie that has now became a legend, came to the silver screen almost a hundred years ago, in an era when even Hollywood was still in the silent zone. This archetypal tale adapted from the ‘Tales of a Thousand Nights’ (what we know better as ‘Arabian Nights’), was made into a film by Douglas Fairbanks who wrote the story for the film, produced it and played the lead role. Over the decades, this film has become a seminal benchmark of what fantasy cinema should be. The lavish production was much ahead of its time of the 1920s. In that era, the production cost of the film came to a whopping 1.1 million USD. One has to see to believe the scale of production – towering palaces, fabulous interiors, special effects to blow your mind and a cast of thousands much before Cecil B DeMille put his hand to the camera. This film is available in public domain, and it is a veritable treat to watch.

Over the decades, the film has been remade in Hollywood and also in other parts of the world, sustaining and perpetuating the fantasy of this adorable tale of a petty, brazen, street smart thief whose philosophy in life is “. . . what I like, I take.” His life changes when he sees the sleeping princess and falls in love with her. The plot of the story passes through many twists and turns and magical elements, before the two lovers are joined together. While watching the film, one gets this feeling – haan yes, this is how it happens in the adventure films of Hindi cinema. But the important thing to realize is – here is where it started. This is the original, and what followed are influenced from this one.

In Hindi films, the earliest reference we can garner is a silent film from 1931 – ‘Iraaque Ka Chor’. Although not essentially mentioning Baghdad, and in the absence of any plot details, it is possible that this film follows the Fairbanks original from 1924. Besides the interesting trivia that Baghdad and Basra were probably the only two well known cities of Iraq.

In the era of sound movies, 1934 is the first time this name appears. That year, two films were made – ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’ and ‘Iraaque Ka Chor’. The next in line is the 1946 film ‘Baghdad Ka Chor’, followed again in 1955 by another film of the same name. Then in 1968, we have the Dara Singh starrer ‘Thief Of Baghdad’. In 1977 came another version with the same title, the star cast being led by Shatrughan Sinha, Kabir Bedi and Sulakshana Pandit. In 1978, Kabir Bedi starred in another film by the same name, for TV.

With this song today we bring on board the 1968 film ‘Thief Of Baghdad’. The film is produced by Bohra Brothers and is directed by Shriram. The abbreviated list of actors is Dara Singh, Nishi, Helen, Savita, Jeevankala, P Kailash, BM Vyas, Sheikh, Ravi Kumar, Ram Kumar, Maqbool, Sunanda, Amritrana, Jilani, Sarita Devi, Munshi Munakka, Bijnor, Ramesh Kant, Johnny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Maruti, Rani, Gani, Mohammed Ali, B Sandow, Gulab, Gaffar, Mansoor, Mohammedali Steelman, Vimla, Khursheed and Saudagar Singh. And we see many of them in the video clip of this song.

The information about the songs in Geet Kosh is indicated as being not complete. It lists 5 songs, with indication that more songs are in the film. The film being available, I checked it and I can identify at least one more song which is not listed in Geet Kosh.

The credits of the film identify two songwriters – Aziz Ghaazi and SH Bihari. The writer of this song is not specifically identified. Music is given by Baldev Nath, which most likely is the same person as Baldev Nath Bali or BN Bali.

This song is a raaj darbaar dance song which is performed by Helen and Rani [Jeevankala]. The singing voice is just one, i.e. Asha Bhosle with the lines being shared by the two dancers on screen.
[Ed Note: Thanks to dear Prakash ji for correcting the identification of the lady dancer accompanying Helen in this song.]

In this screen situation, Nishi is the princess who has fallen in love with Dara Singh, a commoner. Dara Singh and his team is captured and are shown in chains. The scheming Wazir, role played by P Kailash (I need help to identify this actor) has imprisoned the King, and has forced the princess to marry him, given that her father and her lover are both his prisoners. So Nishi and this Wazir are seated in the two throne like chairs, and the dance is being performed for the occasion. As per the storyline of this film, Helen performs the role of Dara Singh’s younger sister.
[Ed Note: Once again thanks to dear Prakash ji for identifying the actor playing the role of the Wazir.]

The video clip shows a number of actors. There are two more men in chains. The one in mustard shirt with chains tied to his wrists (again need help to identify this actor) plays the role of Dara Singh’s younger brother in the film. The third person in chains, wearing a black shirt and with chains around his neck is Sheikh. There is a few other actors shown in momentary close up shots, who are also watching this performance. I request other readers and friends to please help identify them.

So with this song, the 1968 film ‘Thief Of Baghdad’ makes its debut on our blog. That also brings the count of films brought on board through this series now to 75. Wow. Let us see how many more we are able to add in the coming weeks. Working on the home work list that Katie Ben prepared for me, we shall not be hitting the century mark on this series, but I think we will get pretty close. 🙂

Song – Humko Bhi Marna Hai, Tumko Bhi Marna Hai  (Thief Of Baghdad) (1968) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – [Unattributed], MD – Baldev Nath

Lyrics

khabrdaar. . .

hoshiyaar. . .

humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai

humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai
marne se darna kya
jeene ki baaten kar
humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai

duniya ke gulshan mein
kaante hazaaron hain
duniya ke gulshan mein
kaante hazaaron hain
kaanton se bachta ja
duniya se daaman bhar
humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai

chaahat ki raahon mein
maana ke khatra hai
chaahat ki raahon mein
maana ke khatra hai
phir bhi tu chalta ja
mere ishaaron par
humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai

maujon mein rehne de
kashti jawaani ki
maujon mein rehne de
kashti jawaani ki
aata nahin hum ko
marna kinaaron par

humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai
marne se darna kya
jeene ki baaten kar
humko bhi marna hai
tumko bhi marna hai

Missing Films of 1960s – 70
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Almost like a déjà-vu happening today.

The year is 1968, one more than the previous episode – we had the film ‘Jungle Ki Hoor’ from `1967 yesterday. Today, the film is ‘Lutera Aur Jaadugar’. The word ‘Jaam’ appears in the song title. And the word ‘tauba-aashiqan’ appears in the body of the song. Other similarities – well they go without saying.  A perfect gem of a song from an unknown film, composed by an equally obscure and unfamiliar music director – Suresh Kumar.

Suresh Kumar – a name that is not easily remembered as a music director. But on checking the Geet Kosh, we find that his outings in the field, in terms of films and songs is not trivial. We are talking here about a career that starts around early 1950s and continues well into the 1980s. Till 1980, the data available in GK, he as about sixty songs from 10 films to his credit as an independent solo music director. And then we also find out that he paired up with another music director M Talwar, and the two composed music under the duo name of Suresh-Talwar. As a duo there are another 80 odd songs from another additional 12 films. That certainly is not an ignorable size of body of work.

The film comes from the banner of Zubi Films, Bombay and is directed by D Raman. The cast of actors is listed as – Azaad, Nishi, Jagdeep, Tabassum, Mohan Choti, Rajan Haksar, Sherry, Meenakshi, Heera Sawant, Ram Raseela, Noorjahan, Zeb Sultan, Bibi Bai, Ghulam Sabir, Jilani, Gopu, Luckyram, Prince Arjun, Nadir, Rajrani, and Praveen Bano. Reading this list, it is clear that this is a B/C grade stunt cum fantasy film.

Seven songs are listed for this film. Two songwriters – Yogesh and Anjaan. This song is from the pen of Yogesh. The song is apparently a twin dance song. The singing voices are of Krishna Kalle and Usha Khanna. Ah yes, the MD appearing as a singer for another MD. Plus another claim to rarity – a very rare combination of singing voices.

Listening to the song, the image comes to mind of two dancers on screen, dancing in a king’s court or in a pub. And possibly one of the on screen dancers may be Nishi herself. A typical ‘maikhaana’ song, done really well, I am sure you will enjoy this discovery.

Song – Jaam Bhar Bhar Ke Pila De Mere Saaqiya  (Lutera Aur Jaadugar) (1968) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Usha Khanna, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Suresh Kumar
Both

Lyrics

jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya
mujhko deewaana bana de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya

berukhi se tumhari sitamgar
hamen kab tak shikaayat rahegi
dekh le le duaaen hamaari
teri mehfil salaamat rahegi
teri mehfil salaamat rahegi
oo oo oo oo
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya

haaye tauba-aashiqan baankpan ye
hum hain qurbaan teri adaa pe
jaam kab se hamaara hai khaali
bhar de bhar de zaraa muskuraa ke
bhar de bhar de zaraa muskuraa ke
oo oo oo oo
thodi aankhon ki mila de mere saaqiya
mujhko deewaana bana de mere saaqiya
mere saaqiya
aisi pila naa utre nasha
jaam bhar bhar ke pila de mere saaqiya

“Pardesi”(1970) was a “social” movie which was produced and directed by Kundan Kumar for Kundan Films, Bombay. The movie had Biswajeet, Mumtaz, Kanan Kaushal, Sujeet Kumar, Padma, Manmohan, Sulochana, Manmohan Krishna, Brahmchaari, Shabnam, Lata Bose, Keshav Rana, Jayshree T, Geetanjali, Bhagwan Sinha, Jankidas, Har Shukla, Anand Joshi, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Shah, Abu Bakar, Manohar, Nishaat, Jeevan etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of the five songs covered so far:-

Here is the sixth and final song from “Pardesi”(1970) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

What a hidden gem of a song it is ! It is a synchronised dance song picturised on Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. The picturisation shows people gathered around the dancers who sing and dance while we have Manmohan Krishna playing “Been” and a gentleman (whom I am unable to identify) playing guitar.

This song can be described as a snake dance song, a dance form which has become quite popular nowadays thanks to Bangladeshi cricketers. 🙂 The snake dance steps of theb Bangladeshi cricketers were taken from the “Nagina”(1986) song Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera. This dance step has been mass copied by Sri Lankan cricket watching public as well as famous people (like Sunil Gavaskar, for instance) by now. So the “novelty” value of that snake dance step has been lost. Have no worry. Here is another snake dance song, one that is performed by Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. Being a synchronised dance song, it is a fit snake dance song for a pair of Bangladeshi batsmen batting together at the crease. They can dance like Mumtaz and Padma Khanna whenever they feel that that are on the verge of winning a match. 🙂 And do not forget to give credit to me for this wonderful snake dance song. 🙂

With this song, “Pardesi”(1970) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Missing Films of 1960s – 57
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s debut film is ‘Do Dushman’ from 1967.  And the song is a delightful dance duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Kamal Barot.

The films belongs to the stunt genre. It is produced under the banner of Co-operative Pictures, Bombay, and is directed by Mohammed Husain. The eminent star cast consists of Dara Singh, Mumtaz, Ajeet, Sheikh Mukhtar, Veena, Ulhas, Amar, Bela Bose, Agha, and Meenakshi amongst others.

The film has a total of 8 songs listed, all of which are penned by Aziz Qaisi. The name of music director’s name is listed as Manohar. In all likelihood, this is Monohar Lal Sonik, the blind music director, who also gave music as part of the Sonik Omi duo.

The song is a fast paced dance song. Since there are two lead singing voices, it is safe to assume that this would have been a twin dance on screen. The film seems to be available, as one more song of this film is available online as a video clip. However, this song is available as an audio only so far. From the sound and the pace of the songs, my hunch is that Bela Bose would be one of the dancers on screen. I request other knowledgeable friends and readers to help add more information about this film and this song.

So with this post, the film ‘Do Dushman’ of 1967 opens its account on our blog today. Enjoy this fast pace dance number.

Missing Films of 1960s – 55
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s debut film is Shri Ram Bharat Milan, from 1965.

Today is also the birth anniversary of Kavi Pradeep, one of the leading poets who wrote for Hindi films, during the 1940s, 50s and 60s.

The film is produced under the banner of RM Art Productions Bombay, and is directed by Mani Bhai Vyas. The cast of actors listed for this film are Mahipal, Anita Guha, Nirupa Roy, Rajkumar, Aruna Irani, B M Vyas, Niranjan Sharma, Vanmala, Prithviraj, Balakram, Sulochana. The listings show that there are six songs in this film, all written by Kavi Pradeep. The music for the film is composed by Pandit Shivram. This particular song is a twin dance song sung by Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar and supported by chorus.

Time was 1960s, and religious films still had a popular following. And the producers community also had an ongoing interest, to continue making films based on our scriptures and ancient history, ensuring that these stories do not fade away from public memory. Their objective was also to ensure that the teachings of the epic stories associated with religion, continue to be passed on to the newer generations. It was a matter of personal and collective responsibility that the film makers and other artists would continue to get together and make such films. Sadly, in the recent decades, this awareness and this responsibility has become a thing of the past.

In 1965, two films were released narrating the story of brotherly love between Sri Ram and Sri Bharat. The other film is titled ‘Bharat Milap’. That film has already made its debut on our blog.

The scene enacted in this song is during the initial days of the vanvaas – the sojourn of Sri Ram to the forests for a period of 14 years, accompanied by Sita ji and Lakshman Bhaiya. As they reach the banks of River Ganga, they have to seek help of the boatmen to cross the river. This episode is a one of the most emotional and well documented episodes in the Ramayan. Nishad Raj Guh, the chief of the boatmen community, and Kevat, one of the boatmen in this community, play very significant roles in this episode.

As is also given in the description of this episode in the Ramayan, the boatmen community do not want Sri Ram to leave their humble village, and request Him to consider staying with them, for the duration of the forest sojourn. But of course Sri Ram has other things in mind, that He has to accomplish during these fourteen years. In this clip from the film, this request to Sri Ram is being presented as a dance. The two lead dancers – I am not able to place a name to these faces, and I request other knowledgeable readers to please help to identify them.

A very interesting thing about the construction of the song. The song is presented in two stanzas. As one hears them, and then also views the lyrics, one realizes that each stanza is quite long (yes, a five plus minutes song has just two stanzas). And the construction of the stanzas is quite complex. Kudos to both the songwriter and the music director to build a very attractive song with such a complex composition.

Listen to and enjoy is delightful song of request, as the boatmen families are requesting to Sri Ram to make their village as His abode for the duration of the vanvaas. They are promising that they will build a city for Him, as beautiful as Ayodhya, His own home town. And they also promise that they will also bring the Saryu river to this place.

A wonderful song to enjoy.

Missing Films of 1960s – 44
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There is so much to be explored and to be showcased. This journey of debut songs is taking us down the 1960s path, and almost every day we are discovering fabulous gems of song that most people have not heard.

Today’s film is ‘Flying Circus’ from 1965. The film is produced under the banner of Regal Films, Bombay and is directed by Dhanpat Rai. The star cast is led by Ranjan and Nasreen, and also includes Bela Bose, Neelofer, Rajan Kapoor, Babu Raje, Polson, Shyam, Vishwa Mehra, Shri Bhagwan and Kamini Devi etc. There are six songs listed for this film. Music is composed by Robin Bannerjee. Two lyricists are identified – Farooque Kaiser and Yogesh Gaud. This song is from the pen of Yogesh Gaud.

The singing voices are those of Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot.

The music is the key. An obscure film, and a lesser known music director. But see, what wonders can be created even in these obscure circumstances. From the sound and flow of the song, I am quite sure this is a twin dance song. Also, keeping Nasreen’s name possibly for the leading role, the two names that could possibly be performing this song on screen are Bela Bose and Neelofer, but I am just guessing. I request other knowledgeable readers and friends, to add more information for this film and this song.

A lilting fast paced dance number, I am sure you are going to like.  Enjoy

Song – Lag Gaya Re Lag Gaya Re Teer Nishaane Pe  (Flying Circus) (1965) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Kamal Barot, Lyrics – Yogesh Gaud, MD – Robin Bannerjee

Missing Films of 1960s – 41
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

1960s is turning out to be a very interesting era. Notwithstanding the known popular songs, it is the unfamiliar and the forgotten songs that are turning out to be absolutely fantastic entertainment.

Take today’s debut film – ‘Dilruba’ from 1967. Ah yes, I know there might be some eyebrows raised in surprise – but well, ‘Dilruba’ is an earlier film, and aren’t we familiar with it. And that its songs are very much present on our blog. And goodness yes, the film has been yippeee’d already. Well I guess you are right on all counts, except that the film ‘Dilruba’ that has been yippeee’d already is a film from 1950. The film that I am bringing on board today is a same name film, but it is from 1967. Yes, this same name confusion sometimes makes miss some new items.

And to share a very interesting aside here. The songs of this 1967 film have been uploaded by Sa Re Ga Ma on their YouTube channel. And I can’t believe it myself, that a seasoned organization like Sa Re Ga Ma is making such blunders. Maybe the old timers in the company are gone, and the new crop are just following an employment opportunity by rote. You know, they have uploaded the audios of the songs of 1967 film, with an image of the poster of the 1950 film. Quite a blunder this one is.

So the 1967 ’Dulruba’ comes from the banner of Festival Films, Bombay. It is directed by Mohammed Husain. The cast of actors includes Kumkum, Madan Puri, Madhumati, Helen, Shyam Kumar, Ajeet, Maruti etc. The film has 5 songs, for which the music has been composed by Usha Khanna. The five songs are written by three songwriters – Asad Bhopali, Javed Anwar and SH Bihari. This particular song comes from the mind of Asad Bhopali. Again, an aside which may just be a reminder for the regulars. The name Javed Anwar is actually a set of two poets working together. Javed is Manoharlal Khanna, father to Usha Khanna the MD, and Anwar is Raheel Gorakhpuri.

The singing voices are those of Asha Bhosle and Usha Mangeshkar. What a charming twin dance song this one is. I myself am also hearing it for the first time. With let us say, names of three dancers in the list of actors – Helen, Kum Kum and Madhumati – I don’t even want to start guessing which two of them would be performing this song on screen. I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this film, this song and its picturization.

So with this hit, the film ‘Dilruba’ from 1967 opens its account here on the blog today.  A wow song that I am sure you will enjoy.

Song – Haaye Allah Kyon Hum Ne Pyaar Kiya Tum Se  (Dilruba) (1967) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Asad Bhopali, MD – Usha Khanna
Asha Bhosle + Usha Mangeshkar

Lyrics

shokh nazren sharaabi ishaara
chheen kar le gaya dil hamara
shokh nazren sharaabi ishaara

kabhi khud aa gey bin bulaaye
kabhi laakhon bahaane banaaye
kabhi khud aa gey bin bulaaye
kabhi laakhon bahaane banaaye
dil hi dil mein sanam
sochte hain ye hum
dil hi dil mein sanam
sochte hain ye hum
