Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part XLV: Year 1991

In this episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1991.

In 1991, 130 Hindi movies containing 667 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 16 of these movies and she sang 57 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 11.5 % of the movies released in 1991. Her voice was heard in 8.5 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1991.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 9 music directors and 14 lyricists in these 16 movies released in 1991. Laxmikant Pyarelal were the most prolific music directors with Lata, with 654 songs in HFM with Lata Mangeshkar by the end of 1989. Shankar Jaikishan with 457 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were in the second position. R D Burman with 331 Lata Mangeshkar and Kalyanji Anandji with 307 songs were next ahead of C Ramchandra with 274 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Chitragupta (239), Madan Mohan (195), S D Burman (179),Naushad (145), Roshan (144), Hemant Kumar (127), Anil Biswas (120), Husnlal Bhagatram (108), Salil Chaudhary (109), Bappi Lahiri (108), Rajesh Roshan (105) and Vasant Desai (104). Together these seventeen music directors composed 3706 songs out of 5009 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1991. Anand Bakshi with 674 songs was the top lyricist with Lata Mangeshkar. Other leading lyricists with Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (555), Majrooh Sultanpuri (405), Shailendra (361), Hasrat Jaipuri (298), Prem Dhawan (201), Bharat Vyas (193), Shakeel Badayuni (189), Sahir Ludhianvi (161) and Indeewar (153). These ten lyricists had penned 3190 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

It can be seen from the table of 1991 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 56 songs in 15 movies released in 1991. It was a good recovery from 1990, hen she got to sing just 12 songs in 9 movies.

By end of 1991, Lata Mangeshkar had just crossed 5000 songs as a playback singer. Out of these 5009 songs, solo songs added up to exactly 3300 songs.

5 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1991 have been covered in the blog. That leaves us with 52 songs from 16 movies of 1991 that are yet to be covered.

Alphabetically “100 days”(1991) is the first movie of 1991 that offers us a Lata Mangeshkar song to be covered in the blog.

“100 days”(1991) was produced by Jay Mehta Mehta and directed by Partho Ghosh for Jay Vijay Enterprises, Bombay. The movie had Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Javed Jaffery, Sabeeha(special appearance), Laxmikant Berde, Kunika Sadanand, Moon Moon Sen, Ajit Vachani, Jay Kalgutkar (introducing) ,Vijay Arora, Chunnu Mehra, Harbans Darshan.M.Arora, Prem Sagar, Sunita, Yusuf. They were supported by Shashikiran, Neelam Mehra, Shivaji Satam, Mahaveer Shah, Raja Duggal, Kanti Karan, Ramakant Burman, Anthony Andrade etc.

This movie was a remake of a remake of a foreign movie. The original Italian movie “Sette Note In Nero” (1977) served as the inspiration for Tamil film “Nooravathu Naal” (1984). Its suceess led into it being dubbed into Telugu as “Nurava Roju” (1984) and remade into Malayalam as “Aayiram Kannukal” (1986)

“100 days”(1991) had six songs in it. Voice of Lata Mangeshkar song was present in five of these songs. One song (non Lata Mangeshkar song) has been covered so far. It means that the remaining five songs from the movie are all Lata Mangeshkar songs.

Here is one of those songs.

This song is a dance song of the kind that was very popular those days. It is sung by Amit Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and female chorus. The song is picturised as a dance song on Javed Jafrey, Madhuri Dixit and others. Jackie Shroff and Ajit Vachaani are also seen in the picturisation.

“100 Days” (1991) was produced by Jay Mehta (son of producer Pranlal Mehta), directed by Partho Ghosh. This was a first for both the producer and director. It starred Madhuri Dixit- Moon Moon Sen- Jackie Shroff- Javed Jaffrey- Laxmikant Berde – Sabeeha (daughter of yesteryear actress Ameeta of “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” fame) and a few others. It was a remake of a Tamil hit, a crime thriller with a twist. Madhuri played Moon Moon’s sister and Javed Jaffrey’s college friend. Jackie played a rich man and Laxmikant Berde his secretary.

Usually I like to give the synopsis of the movie with the song but not today. It will take away the fun of seeing the movie, just in case any follower of the blog feels like having a dekho of the movie, anytime. I have seen it in both languages and have loved it. Specially the climax and the various emotions that run through the movie. There is high drama, comedy, romance and a few entertaining songs. Partho Ghosh had an able cinematographer in the (late) Arvind Laad and the frames in the suspense scenes are well composed.

The music for the movie was by Vijay Patil better known as Raam Laxman. I remember that our in-house encyclopedia has mentioned somewhere on the blog that Raam -Laxman were brothers who were signed up for the 1977 movie ‘Agent Vinod’. Unfortunately, Raam the older brother passed away before the release of ‘Agent Vinod’ in 1976. But Vijay Patil continued his journey in the industry as Raam -Laxman and was very successful in the ’90s. He later changed his name to Raamlaxman post ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’.

“100 Days” had songs written by Dilip K Tahir, Dev Kohli and Ravinder Rawal. the singers used were Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, S.P. Balasubramaniam, and Amit Kumar. Choreographers were Suresh Bhatt, Chinni Prakash, and Partho Ghosh himself. There are two songs that were filmed on the dancing duo Javed Jaffery and Madhuri of which one was a stage song.

Today we are not having the stage song but the other one, which is essentially keeping with the spirit of today i.e. April Fool’s day or All Fools day. Since morning there have been messages which are supposedly giving insight into why this day is celebrated and the last line of that message says, and I quote: “He used to read all fake stories, like you are doing now. It’s great idea fooling you”. Normally people play harmless pranks on their friends and dear ones on this day and I read somewhere that this is, generally, only till noon.

This is what I found on wikipedia:- “Some writers suggest that April Fools’ originated because in the Middle Ages, New Year’s Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns, with a holiday that in some areas of France, specifically, ended on April 1, and those who celebrated New Year’s Eve on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates by the invention of April Fools’ Day. The use of January 1 as New Year’s Day became common in France only in the mid-16th century, and that date was not adopted officially until 1564, by the Edict of Roussillon”.

Before getting on to the song I would like to congratulate Atulji, Sudhirji and all his followers and contributors and commentors on the blog’s 16300th post. Even if the blog is moving as per the movement of the moon, we are reaching centuries at a constant pace.

Here is the song in Alka Yagnik and Amit Kumar’s voices Sabeeha is in Javed’s team in playing pranks on Madhuri though they are all close friends. This song is written by Ravinder Rawal.

I would like to point out a few things in this song:-
(1) Javed jaffery is holding a small potli in his hand at the start of the song, akin to what Gabbar Singh had in ‘Sholay’.
(2) Madhuri has a step where she is shown mixing tambaaku (tobacco) like Gabbar Singh (of course).
These are the reasons why the song has stayed with me in all these years.

I wonder if human voices are like DNA or fingerprints, as no two voices are ever absolutely the same. In blood relatives the voices are very similar, but they are also distinguishable with slight differing inflections. We have experienced such situations where, we have not met a person for a few years, but as soon as we hear their voice, without seeing them at first, we recognize the person and the face flashes before the eyes, before we turn around and actually see that person.

Connecting with people on the cell phone is not the same. We tend to recognise people by the names which are saved in the phone. If people with whom we have lost touch, call on the phone, most of the times they have to identify themselves. Unless it is a person who is very close to us, it is most likely that it will not be recognised. Reliance on technology is eroding the human capacities of recognition and memory. The adventure of people calling from faraway places and the delight that was felt when hearing from loved one on landline phones is dwindled.

Now the last few weeks, I was on vacation, ostensibly for the special occasion of my 3rd century post. I have been looking to find some more songs and more importantly outdoorsy songs, to write posts. There are many thousand songs filmed on locations around the world in newer hindi films. Quite a few of them are very nice and decent songs. Pleasing on the ears and on the eyes.

I don’t want to run more concurrent series, so this will be random song post in between, picturised on outdoor exotic(read fresh) locations.

I talked of voices and inflection in the opening paragraph of this post. The voice of Meena Kumari is a distinct lively sound and I though the voice of ZebaBakhtiar carries some similar inflections to Meena Kumari’s voice. Zeba is a Pakistani actor who played the lead role in the R.K. Films ‘Henna’ 1991. The clothes worn by her in this one film have had a lasting impact on Indian fashions and clothing style for women for these 3 decades. This film brought the ‘Anarkali’ pattern with a bang, and the style has carved a niche in the Indian dressy and formal outlook. Common Indians like to be modestly and festively dressed in weddings and functions, prefer this style. The ‘Anarkali’ once arrived has made itself a permanent fixture in the wardrobes of Indian fashionistas and commoners. The Anarkali has changed various avatars, but it has stayed ahead of the traditional chaniya choli in high fashion.

Bhanu Athaiya(April 28, 1929 – October 15, 2020) is the costume designerfor ‘Henna’ 1991, the first Indian to have won an Oscar award, which she did for ‘Gandhi’ 1982.

I have seen a few songs of Henna just now, and found a couple of imaginatively picturised on location songs. The song being presented here is a Lata solo, written and composed by Ravindra Jain. I have chosen this song, for its melodious tune and also for its picturization showing snowy mountains, green manicured gardens and around an unmanicured river locations at ‘Austria’.

It is clear from what I have seen today, that though the idea of this film was conceived by Raj Kapoor, but the actual filming in done after the death of Raj Kapoor. Only one song, the qawwali has so far been covered in the blog, so this is the second song to posted from this film.

In this song, I think Zeba dances like a doll, and her moves are totally without avarice. Appreciable that she has looked this good on screen, only on the strength of the dresses and some makeup which is rather a distraction from her real beauty. The narrow shouldered fragile look is another thing she shares with the young Meena Kumari.

The series of “Dheere dheere songs” has been in the making since May 2019 starting with this post. But nothing to worry about, as I am keeping track of these posts and will give a recap in the final post of the series.

Next song in this series is this multiple version song from the film Phool aur Kaante- 1991. The music director are the duo Nadeem Sharavan, with their trusted team member Sameer being lyricist. Sameer holds the records for having written highest number of film song. The singers are Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik.

Myswar.com has listed three versions of the song, a duet and Alka Yagnik solo of “Dheere dheere pyar ko badhaana hai” and a sad duet version with slight change in words of mukhda “dheere dheere hausla badhaana hai”. I was not able to find the Alka Yagnik solo, so the lyrics and links are given for the happy and sad duet versions.

Actually this song already posted in the series is inspired by Joyce Sims’ “Come into my life” (1987). On first hearing, the similar things between the songs are the similar words of “meri zindagi mei naana” and “come into my life”, plus the same guitar interlude at the beginning of both songs. But some work on the part of lyricist and music director is definitely involved in creating a lovely Indian sounding song. Aashiqui was in 1990, and this movie “Phool aur Kaante” was in 1991. Come to think of it, this “dheere dheere” is having a similar tune to the Aashiqui song.

“Phool aur Kaante” was Ajay Devgan’s debut film and Madhoo was the heroine. The song’s both versions are picturised on them. I know that I have seen this movie at Bandra’s “Gaiety” cinema. But to recollect the actual happenings in the story is another thing. I visited the imdb page to get snippets of story etc. so can’t say it was a memorable film. And no, they haven’t translated the name of this movie to “Flower and Thorns” 🙂 🙂 .

Today (4 may 2020) is a day when no notable HFM personality was born. But on this day, one person totally unconnected with HFM was born in a far away land 365 years ago. He would invent a musical instrument that has played a vital role in the development of HFM. Movies of 1950s and 1960s were not complete if this instrument did not appear in at least in one song. In one movie, this instrument has even appeared in four songs !

The instrument that we are talking about is Piano. It was invented in 1709 by Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco(4 May 1655 – 27 January 1731), was an Italian maker of musical instruments.

Nine of his pianos still survive. Three of them are preserved in three museums, one in New York (Metropolitan Museum), Rome (Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali) and Leipzig university( Museum of musical instruments)

Hindi movies have had hundred on Piano songs in it. This blog has as many as 147 Piano songs. The earliest is from 1938. Pianon songs came into their own in HFM from late 1940s and ruled the roost in HFm till late 1970s. After that, Piano songs became few and far between. Pianos, which depicted class and prosperity of the character playing it in those days. From 1970s onwards, actors started sporting guitar instead. Guitar may have looked jazzy and spectacular, but it disd not have the old world charm of a Piano.

Most Piano songs of note (pun unintended) have already been covered in the blog.

When I searched for Piano songs on internet, I came across a few writeups, that discussed well known Piano songs. All of them have already been covered in the blog. When I went through one of these writeups (posted on 5 october 2016), I found the description of these songs familiar. I realised that the description was very much mine ! When I checked up these songs in the blog, I realised that this article had copied and pasted contents of the writeup of Piano songs in the blog ! For instance, my description of “Bhaabhi”(1938) Piano song goes like

This song is picturised as a piano song. P Jairaj is playing the piano and this song is sung by Renuka Devi. Her father V H Desai looks on and later the villain Rama Sukul too comes in and watches her sing with disapproval.

You will find this description faithfully copied and pasted in that article.

My description of “Andaaz”(1949) piano song, “hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe”, was

Dilip Kumar sits at the piano at night and sings this song. And Nargis arrives with her pet dog and watches Dilip Kumar sing the song, clutching her dog like a pillow.

This description is faithfully copied and pasted in that writeup.

Like this, all the 25 Piano songs described there copies contents from this blog, without giving credit. How very cheap of this so called blogger. I have posted a comment in that blog which is unlikely to see the light of the day, of course.

Coming to Piano songs, I quickly realised that these songs had gone the way of qawwaali songs, cabarat songs etc- viz they had vanished as the golden era of HFM drew to a close.

One can still find a few piano songs here and there, but these songs are nowhere near the same class of Piano songs that were created during the golden era of HFM.

After some frenetic search, I have been able to locate one as yet unrepresented Piano song. It is from a “recent” movie. Even the movie, a musical blockbuster, is not yet represented in the blog.

Today, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the man who gave us Piano, here is a piano song from “Saajan”(1991). Yes, this movie, the biggest box office hit of the year 1991 was not there in the blog till now. This movie, which was produced by K C Bokadia and directed by Lawrence Desouza had Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Kader Khan, Reema Laagoo, Laxmikant Berde, Ekta Sohini, Anjana Mumtaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Yunus Parvez, Raju Shreshtha, Tej Sapru, Vikas Anand etc in it.

I had fond memories of watching this movie in Vadodara in 1991, where I was attending a course those days.

The movie had ten songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Saajan”(1991) to appear in the blog. This song has male and female solo versions sung by S P Balasubhramanyam and Alka Yagnik respectively. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

It is the female version, picturised on stage, with Madhuri Dixit near a piano, that makes this song a Piano song. Unlike Piano songs of yore, some sort of mist engulfs her and the piano. I wonder what the director was trying to achieve with this kind of picturisation.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the creator of Piano, here is this memorable Piano song from 1991.

Welcome all to the today’s post where I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Saudaagar-1991’. This is one of the two movies falling under ‘Blog Ten-Year challenge’ today. Another movie is ‘Sunahri Naagin-1963’.

‘Saudaagar-1991’ is one of the many movies that I watched during my stay at Kota. I remember I watched this movie twice during its initial release. Later I have always enjoyed it in ‘parts’ whenever it was on TV channels. The main reason for watching the movie was that it was directed by Subhash Ghai (he was the producer as well) and secondly its ‘music’.
I am big fan of Subhash Ghai , not only for his direction but for the music of his movies as well.

Music has always been a ‘highlight’ of the movies directed by him and also the picturization of the song sequences in his movies which are choreographed in ‘style’.

I still remember watching ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’, ‘Saudaagar-1991’ and ‘Khalnayak-1993’ to packed houses in Kota and the audience breaking into cheers and dancing to the tunes of ‘My name is Lakhan’, ‘Ilu Ilu’, ‘Imli ka boota beri ka ped’, and other songs in ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’ and ‘Saudaagar-1991’.

Also, I cannot forget the ‘mesmerising silence’ watching the ‘artistically choreographed’ ‘Choli ke peechhe kya hai’ and the ‘picturesque beauty’ in the song ‘Paalki mein ho ke sawaar chali re’… from ‘Khalnaayak-1993’.

His collaboration with the music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal started with the ‘1979’ movie ‘Gautam Govinda’ and lasted till ‘Khalnayak-1993’.

I could not have expected a better surprise than this one today. Aha, here is this wonderful memorable song that has got repeated in a film after 34 years. And now, that repeat itself is 28 years past. Wow, 62 years later we are going to talk about a song from 1957, which appeared once again in another film in 1991.

Yes, the iconic song of road travel that has been immortalized in the annals of Indian cinema. The tone and the context of the song – a vagabond traveler, a second hand truck, the endless roads, and a journey without a destination – it set the template for others to emulate. Footloose has no mark over this. Don’t we all, at some time in life, aspire for a meandering aimless trip, just for the sake of the journey. And just for the heck of it. The destination – may it exist or not, companions – may they be there or not. Desultory, adrift, without any aim, feckless – when the apparent random futility is the purpose of the endeavor. What a state to be in – being, and yet not being, nary a care in the world. Aah yes, the mind sometimes wants an escape of sorts – “Le Chala Jidhar Ye Dil Nikal Padey”.

The original from the film ‘Nau Do Gyarah’ (1957) needs no introductions. The words, the melody and the imagery is etched in the mind, in all its details – Delhi roads of mid 1950s, sans traffic; the time when the traffic used to pass under the India Gate, and the Kashmere Gate (now these are monuments, cordoned off from the traffic); a miniscule encounter with a coy lady sitting in a car coming from the opposite direction; driving past the Taj Mahal; the long row of village belles carrying earthen pots of water, offering no grass (घास नहीं डालती 🙂 ) to the most handsome beseeching young man claiming to be laid out like a carpet at their feet – yes, all etched in the mind like it happened yesterday.

Time was when Sachin Da was quite, nay very selective, as always, in his choice of the singing voice for individual songs. And Kishore Da was never his ‘always’ choice for playback for Dev Anand. But Sachin Da has been proven right and right and right again, in his choice of singing voices. Imagine a “Khoya Khoya Chaand. . .”, or “Dil Ka Bhanwar. . .” or “Tu Kahaan Ye Bataa. . .” or “Hum Bekhudi Mein. . .” in a voice other than Rafi Sb, and a “Jaayen To Jaayen Kahaan. . .” in a voice other than Talat Sb, or the jazzy “Hum Dum Se Gaye. . .” in a voice other than Manna Dey, or the magnificent “Ye Raat Ye Chandni. . .”, or “Na Tum Hamen Jaano. . .” or “Chup Hai Dharti. . .” or “Yaad Aa Gayin Wo. . .” in a voice other than Hemant Da. It just will not stick in the imagination. Sachin Da got the best, the most suitable voice for the song, and after listening to them, the only verdict is – it cannot be bettered. In all the outings that Sachin Da shared with Dev Anand, apparently ‘Funtoosh’ (1956) and ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970) are the only two collaborations wherein we hear Kishore Da as the only voice playing back for Dev Anand. In all other films they have done together, Sachin Da has used a combination of different voices for Dev Sb. ‘Baazi’ (1951) also has only Kishore Da’s voice backing up Dev Anand for “Dil Ye Kya Cheez Hai. . .”, but then it is the only male voice song in the film, and that too, a song that only Kishore Da can do justice to.

And not just for Dev Sb. Sachin Da also has Rafi Sb and Kishore Da playing back for Rajesh Khanna in ‘Aradhana’ (1969), and Rafi Sb, Kishore Da and Manhar as the singing voices for Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Abhimaan’ (1973). Here was a music director who had his finger not on the pulse of public appeal, but on the pulse of divining which voice is the most suitable for a particular melody, a particular mood, and a particular situation.

And so, coming to the surprise that I mentioned in the first line of this write up. As I picked up this song for creating the next post in the series of repeat songs, a realization hit home. Today is the birth anniversaries of the two stalwarts who created the original song in 1957 – Sachin Da and Majrooh Sb. For Majrooh Sb, it is the centenary celebration, and for Sachin Da it is the 113th. Actually, Majrooh Sb’s info was already in mind since last night, as I was preparing Sadanand ji’s excellent write up for this great poet. And the rest of the coincidental links fell in place as I picked up this song for today’s post.

The film ‘Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin’ from 1991, is a popular hit romantic comedy from its time. It is remake of the storyline of the iconic ‘Chori Chori’ from 1956, which had the lead pair billing of Nargis and Raj Kapoor. And in turn, ‘Chori Chori’ is following the same storyline as the 1934 Hollywood hit film ‘It Happened One Night’, starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, and directed by the legendary Frank Capra. This theme has also been used in other films in Kannada and Tamil. In later years, we also see ‘Jab We Met’ in 2007, based somewhat loosely on the same storyline.

The film is produced by Gulshan Kumar and is directed by Mahesh Bhatt. The lead pair is Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. By 1991, Aamir was already an acknowledged star in the industry, and Pooja was just beginning her career. For both of them, this film proved to be a strong fillip for their individual careers.

The caper is well known – a spoilt heiress of a rich businessman flees from home, to be with the person she believes, wrongly of course, she is in love with. On the way, she meets another boy, the hero of the story, who helps her to get to her target, and eventually lands her back at her father’s home. As an outcome of the road adventures that are shared by the boy and the girl, they inadvertently and without realizing it till quite late in the storyline, fall in love with each other. And the movie ends with the girl fleeing once again (with the help of a very co-operative father) on the way to the altar, to be with the person she is truly in love with.

When I came to this connection, I was/am quite astounded. What a selection of a song for a memory reprisal. The original song with Dev Sb in the driver’s seat, is about an aimless road adventure. And in this film, the lead protagonists are going thru a road adventure of their own making, trying to save themselves from police, the detectives in pursuit and the general public who have been made aware of the runaway girl through newspaper ads and posters.

On their runaway adventure, there is car breakdown. It is taken into a garage for repairs. The mechanic departs briefly to get some welding work done from outside. The boy-girl pair are alone in the garage. The radio on the mechanic’s desk is playing. And as the mechanic departs, on comes this song on the radio waves. It catches the attention of the boy, who requests the girl to increase the volume on the radio. He is quite taken in with this ‘मस्त’ (catchy, engrossing) song. Coming close to the girl he takes her in his arms and they begin to dance to the tune. Their eyes meet. There is that oh so lovely pause in everything. Something tingles and connects. There is surprise and uncertainty on the faces of both of them. In the eyes, there is also an expectation of a liking that is so demure and endearing. It is one of those moments that feels like eternity. And yes, magic.

Till that ‘पाजी’ (scoundrel) mechanic barges in with a newspaper in hand announcing that the girl’s father is publicly searching for her. The moment of magic is so brutally broken.

The repeat song is the original. In this scene, somewhat less than two stanzas are played. Of course this is not listed in the songs of the film and does not appear on its cassette or CD. And so, in this post, I am retaining the original credits for this everlasting song.

And yes, once again, celebrating the anniversaries of the two of the greatest song-music creators in the Indian film industry. “Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke. . .” – goodness, what a fantastic tagline.

My Railway Related Reminiscences – 1

When I look back into days gone by, I find that my recollections of the past can be divided neatly into decades. I have vague recollections of 1960s as I was quite young in that decade. 1970s is the decade that I recall most vividly as well as most fondly as I was as my precocious best in this decade, being in my teens in this decade.

I find that my recollections of subsequent decades are rather more vague. I can tell you what I was doing in 1975, but I do not have similar vivid recollections of 1985, 1995 or even 2005 !

The above applies to my recollections on Hindi movies and HFM as well. I cannot recall even one Hindi movie song of 2005 or 2015 if my life dwepended on it, but I can readily recollect dozens of songs of 1975.

Since our younger regulars never tire of reminding us that good songs were created in 1990s and later as well, I thought that I should try and discuss some songs from those years even though my recollections of those days are not as vivid as my recollections of 1970s. 🙂

Much of my 1980s was spent in my “higher” education. From 1990s onwards, I found myself posted in various parts of the country.

My initial postings were in South, in what was South Central Railway, with its HQ at Secunderabad. My initial days there were spent in twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad. My first posting was very much in that place. Later, I was posted at a small place in Marathwada called Purna.

I watched quite a few movies in Hyderabad/ Secunderabad. Those were Hindi movies, Telugu movies as well as English movies.

I was a firm believer that one should walk on foot in any new place wherever you wanted to go. That helped you familiarise yourself with various landmarks of the place. I applied my theory rigidly. I would walk six km daily from my residence to my workplace in the morning and then come back by walk in the evening. So I used to walk 12 km daily. 🙂

On weekends, I would plan to watch movies. I used to buy all the three English daily newspapers published in the city, namely Deccan Chronicle, Hindu and Indian Express. The three newspapers together form such a bulk that sometimes people would mistake me for a newspaper vendor. 🙂

I would look at the cinema hall ads to find which movies were playing in which movie halls. After identifying which movie to watch and where to watch, I would decide how to reach there.

It was sometime in 1991 or may be 1992 that I decided to go and watch “Phool Aur Kaante”(1991).

THe movie was playing in a movie hall in old city of Hyderabad. I stayed in Secunderabad near the Secunderabad Railway Stations at a distance of 15 km. How to reach there.

I boarded a local train from Secuderabad and reached Kacheguda Railway station. From there I walked towards old city, in the general direction of Hyderabad(aka Nampally) Railway station. I had a map of the twin city and I would consult it often to find locations of interest to me.

I kept walking on and on and came across old city, full of densely populated areas. I did not have to go Huderabad Railway station. The movie hall was somewhere in between Kacheguda and Hyderabad Railway stations.

I arrived the hall well in time so I had little difficulty buying a ticket for for matinee show. Now, show beginning at 3 PM is matinee show for me, as I was born and brought up in North India, but in Hyderabad, it was called first show there. I think it is still called first show in those parts.

That was not the only difference. What I knew as “cold” drink in north was called “cool” drink there. 🙂

I soon found lots of movie watchers arriving at the movie hall. Now, more than two decades later, I have read about the movie going audience of Hyderabad from our beloved inhouse encylopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh in many of his articles. Bulk of movie watchers who had gathered belonged to that kind. There were burkha nasheen females accompanied by lots of small kids. It was not as if this movie had a well known hero. This movie had debutants in lead roles. I wondered why all of them had so eagerly gathered to watch the movie where a newcomer was the hero.

The show began after some wait. It goes withot saying that bulk of movie watchers enjoyed the movie thorougly. I would have enjoyed this movie like them if I was two decades younger. But during these two decades, I had learnt thinks like “logical” thinking etc. I was applying logic on the movie and was not able to find much to enjoy. Now, the hero and heroine are college students. But they were hardly seen studying even for one minute. They would be seen singing dancing and romancing for the entire duration of the movie. Come on, how can one even get admitted to a decent college if all one does is teasing the female students and making passes on them. And in which college one finds females falling in love with the eve teaser. In real life India, such male students would get expelled from the college, and here in the movie he is being glorified. Moreover, how can such students even survive the academic rigours of college life ?

Moreover, I believe that one goes to college to study and not to romance. There is plenty of time and opportunity left in life in future for such romantic pursuits once you have successfully completed your studies and have become financially independent.

Conscientious movie watchers like me are in minority and no movie makers do any thing to appease movie goers like me. Movie makers merrily go on to make movies like this which are big hits at the box office and which are happily lapped up by simple minded movie goers.

I have covered one song from this movie in the past. That “past” happened to be 11 june 2009, viz exactly ten years ago. So, this movie becomes an ideal case of blog ten year challenge.

So here is the second song from “Phool Aur Kaante” (1991) on this day viz 11 june 2019, exactly ten years after covering the first song of the movie in the blog. This song is sung by Kumar Sanu and Anuradha Paudwal. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

This movie was produced by Dinesh Patel and directed by Kuku Kohli. This movie had Ajay Devgun, Madhoo, Amrish Puri, Raza Murad, Raghunath, Jagdeep, Goga Kapoor, Suresh Chatwal, Aruna Irani etc in it. The movie was the launch vehicle of Ajay Devgun. His stunt master father Veeru Devgun was behind the production of this movie.

Watch the picturisation of the song. The song is quite enjoyable to listen to and watch to in you can switch off your conscience and sensibilities. But I have great difficulty doing that.

Nevertheless, here is this song from “Phool Aur Kaante” (1991) which was hugely popular those days and continues to remain so till this day.

Blog Ten Year Challenge (2009-2019): Song number 21

Happy Holi!

Some movies have a lot of memories attached to them. Yash Chopra’s “Chaandni” is one such movie. The year was 1989 and I had been to Mumbai (maayka) for my delivery. So, I had a lot of free time when I could interact with all my friends and neighbours like never before (and never have I had a similar opportunity too) 😉 that made that visit to Mumbai special. For those Atulites who know me- I had shifted out of Mumbai post marriage and so the term “visit to Mumbai”.

Getting back to “Chaandni” – those were the days when there were VCRs in many home and people used to rent Video Cassettes of movies which they couldn’t see in the theatres. I have seen a few movies in that way in the company of my neighbour’s family and more importantly their son. Their son was a year or two older to me so he was a mentor, guide, friend, idol and so many other things for me. To start off (as was the norm in those times) he was my Rakhi bro but we had a different equation between the two of us. He being my idol – I started liking Rekha- his favourite and he, on his part, made an effort to like Amitabh because he doted on me. Whatever love I have for physics, all branches of mathematics, and history is because I followed his way of studying them.

Oh, I again went away from Chaandni- so “Parinda” and “Chaandni” were the two movies the two of us saw back-to-back. “Chaandni” was a typical triangular love story. To start of it is a simple love story where the girl- Chaandni (Sridevi)- is wooed not-so-easily by the guy- Rohit (Rishi Kapoor). But the guys’ family has an issue with the alliance but accept it because their ‘only’ son is adamant. They go ahead have an engagement etc. But unfortunately, Rohit meets with an accident and is bound to a wheel chair. His family decides that this is the best time to humiliate the girl and so Rohit is forced to break-off the engagement so that the girl doesn’t have to face his family’s behaviour.

Now what does the girl do? She leaves Delhi, comes to Mumbai and lands a job in Lalit’s (Vinod Khanna) office. He is already pining for his dead wife when he falls in love with her, she takes some time to reciprocate though she is always civil to him and his mother. The next twist in the story comes when Lalit meets Rohit in Switzerland, where he has gone for business and Rohit has come for treatment. They become friends and decide that on returning to India they will introduce their respective girl friends and also marry on the same day etc. Isn’t that enough to twist the story further and make it a triangle?

This will be the 7th song from “Chaandni” which had Shiv-Hari as music directors and Anand Bakshi as lyricist. I cannot keep myself from saying: Sridevi looks so pretty and baby-like in this song, actually she looks like a baby through the movie. This song is shot on the streets of Delhi or New Delhi. I would like it if the Dilliwale followers of the blog help in identifying the locations. It will be nice to know. 🙂

This song is also in memory of the aforementioned friend who loved to ape Rishi Kapoor and his sunglasses and sweaters. This friend was also a Dilliwala for a brief period of his life.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 19

Today’s song that I am presenting here is a very special song for me as it is about Rajasthan, a place that I am quite fondly attached to thanks to my stay at Kota, Rajasthan.

I had considered this song under my series ‘Desh Ki Mitti Ki Khushboo’ earlier but that could not materialise.

When I took up this series, I though of discussing songs dealing with folklore, talk about folktales, folksongs, culture, traditions, customs of our Country, patriotic songs, songs be based on historical events and yes geographical settings of our country too.

Even songs based on art and crafts of our country, if any are suitable candidates for inclusion in this ‘Desh Ki Mitti Ki Khushboo’ series. So far three songs have been covered under that series and hopefully I will try to bring more in future.

Coming back to the song of this, it falls under another series namely ‘blog ten-year challenge(2009-2019)’.

Songs from following movies were posted ten years ago on 20.03.2009 on the blog;

The other three movies thus ‘qualify’ for the ‘blog ten-year challenge’. Today I am presenting a song from ‘Lamhe-1991’.
I also like songs from ‘Manpasand’ and ‘Sahib Bahadur’ and wish I could have presented a song from each of them as well 🙂

My working life started at the age of 17, with a small company (Nagpur based), at Parli-Vaijnath (Marathwada-Maharashtra) at a Thermal Power Station. When the contract of this company was completed, my boss had ensured that I get a job in a Delhi based company, so that I could continue working and get settled in my professional life.

I have mentioned i in one of my earlier post that the first thing that came to mind on the mention of Delhi was that I will get to see Delhi and other places of our great country. It actually happened and I got the chance to visit New Delhi many times thereafter and travelled a lot to different places due to my postings and official work.

I was enjoying all the travel, even though they were sometime troublesome and uncomfortable, as I was interested in seeing important places of historical and other significance. I was also getting the opportunity to observe the rich historical and cultural heritage our country hase, observe people of diverse areas who spoke different dialects and followed different customs and traditions. That interest and enthusiasm continues even now and I think that I have yet to cover a lot of ground as far as visiting different places in India are concerned.

My first ‘out of Maharashtra’ posting was at the company work site at Kota, Rajasthan.

Here I would also like to mention that fortunately I got site postings at places which were nearer to a city e.g. Phulpur near Allahabad, Aonla near Bareilly etc.

On Nov 30th 1988 late evening, I landed at Kota and stayed there till 14th Aug 1996, when I left for Phulpur-Allahabad.

I have many fond memories of my stay at Kota (and would like to share them in future posts as possible, as they cannot be concluded in just one post here).

While I enjoyed my working life, I did my studies as wello and completed my graduation through IGNOU there.

During my stay there I was always on the lookout for opportunities to visit historical places and tourist destinations, and in the process would buy books on tourism, atlas, maps etc etc.

Though I visited some of them; still many places continue to remain on my wish list till today.

When I rummaged through my travel books in my collection, I came across a book titled ‘Paryatakon ka Swarg- Rajasthan’, which I think I must have bought around 1989-90. Though the date of purchase is not marked there, I find some interesting notes on the index page of this book.
The index page mentions fifteen important places, which have separate chapters in the book, containing pictures and information of these places.

Out of these, Chittorgarh was my favorite and I visited the fort as many as three times in April & August’1992 and Nov’1993. I also travelled to the interior village Nimbaheda near Chittorgarh and stayed there with my friend, while visiting Nimach (MP) once.

I visited Jaipur in July 1990 and Udaipur and the fort at Bundi in August 1992.
(I remember that I visited Jaipur once again in 1994, but that was for an interview and not for sightseeing. So, this does not get into the list 🙂 )

Modern-day Rajasthan was formed on 1st November, 1956. Earlier it was known as ‘Rajputana’ the name given by the Britishers and it was formed on 30th March 1949 (ref – wiki)
It is also known as the ‘Princely State of India’ (Rajputana comprises as many as nineteen princely states (as per wiki).
Rajasthan is divided into thirty-three districts with seven Divisions viz. Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Kota and Bharatpur.
By area it is the largest state of India followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Rajasthan has its glorious history, culture and traditions and so we have many festivals that are celebrated with huge grandeur and enthusiasm.

Hindi films have from time to time included stories and songs based on Rajasthani culture and traditions.
(And since more songs – based on Rajasthan- can be included in this series in future posts I have numbered this post as #Rajasthan-1#)

I watched ‘Lamhe-1991’ at Kota and again twice at Indore when I was travelling for Parli-Vaijnath via Indore-Purna junction. It was after three years that I was going to home since I landed at Kota in 1988. (my parents visited me once in between).

The ‘metre-gauge’ train travel also is one other subject that I wish to cover in another post, so many memories coming back to mind now …
I liked the movie ‘Lamhe’ very much then and also its songs which brings back many memories for me. The film has been shot at many fascinating and beautiful locations of Rajasthan.

So, here is a song from this film ‘Lamhe-1991’ composed by Shiv-Hari and sung by Mohiuddin. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and this ‘folk based song’ is composed by Shiv-Hari. If we listen this ‘magical’ composition again and again it fills us with pride and make nostalgic about the ‘glorious’ past of the ‘princely’ state Rajasthan.

I am unable to recollect now when this song appears in the movie. However I think it is a background song. As of now only the audio of this song is available.

Earlier I could not get right words at few places so I contacted one of our senior guest members whom I met during the Mumbai Gang out in 2016 – Shri. Mahendra Bafna ji and he immediately responded to my request and guided me about the correct words in the lyrics.

Enjoy the song while remembering the glorious and colorful part of India- Rajasthan.
