#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————
# A tribute to Talat Mahmood on his birth anniversary #
——————————————-——————————

The song being presented in this post is from the ‘Bhojpuri’ film titled ‘Laagi Nahin Chhoote Raam-1963’.

I got to listen to this song on ‘Vividh Bharati’ more than a month or two back. I fell in love with this song immediately. I do not remember to have listened to this song earlier. This song is a lovely duet song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood.

Today 24th February’2023 is the ninety-ninth birth anniversary of the legendary singer, and actor Talat Mahmood. He was born on 24th February’1924 and he passed away on 9th May’1988.

As a tribute to him today we will listen to this song sung by him.

As per the statistics on the blog Talat Mahmood has sung around four hundred and fifty songs in Hindi Films. Out of these 450 songs, so far, 392 songs have been posted on the blog.

As mentioned above in this post I am presenting a song from the ‘1963’ ‘Bhojpuri’ movie ‘Laagi Nahin Chhoote Raam’.

‘Laagi Nahin Chhoote Raam-1961’ was directed by Kundan Kumar for ‘Friend’s movies’.It was produced by R. Tiwari.

It had Kumkum, Ashim Kumar, Nazir Hussain, Tiwari, Indrani Mukherjee, Anwar Hussain, Mishra, Ram Singh, Leela Mishra, Helen, Mehmood, Hasan Rizvi, Bhushan Tiwari, Polsan, Ramdev Tiwari, Mangala, Zaman, Baijul, Mastram, Garibdas, Amal Sen, Sinha, Tripathi and others.

Story of this movie was written by Vishwanath Panday. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Nazir Hussain.

Editing of this movie was done by Kamalakar.

‘Laagi Nahin Chhoote Raam-1961’ has seven songs all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music for this movie was composed by Chitragupt the pioneer composer for ‘Bhojpuri’ films. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

One song from ‘Laagi Nahin Chhoote Raam-1963’ was posted on the occasion of ‘Rakshabandhan’ in 2016 on 18.08.2016.

Today’s song is the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mahmood.
Kumkum and Ashim Kumar are seen performing on this lovely song.

Let us now enjoy this song … enjoy the ‘soothing velvet voice of Talat Mahmood- also known as the ‘king of ghazals’…

4624 Post No. : 16274

I have stumbled upon some very melodious and wonderful songs in recent weeks and months. I am saving all the links for various series in various folders, but don’t seem to get around to writing the posts. But my speed has reduced since I started using my new HP laptop, which is a gaming one. I had to go for this as I wanted 1 TB data with SSD, whatever that means. I am told that SSD is for higher speed. This was the only model available, without touch screen. So the games and other binge watching tendencies are hampering my blog output.

But the lure of old film songs is also strong enough, that I go to youtube frequently and end up saving a few song links every time, after checking if they are posted in the blog. This way I get to hear and sometimes see, some forgotten old melodies, known and unknown.

One of such songs is this ‘chhaaya geet’ duet by Talat Mehmood and Lata Mangeshkar from the film Zindagi (1956). The music director is Mohammed Shafi Niazi, and lyricist is Kaifi Azmi. This is the first opportunity for me to post a duet by Talat-Lata, as all well known songs by these were posted early on in the first three years of this blog inception.

Details about Mohammed Shafi are given in this post. The post also contains his filmography. This is one of the two songs posted in the blog, the other one being abhi to saji hai muraadon ki duniya. Seeing the filmography, the last film of mohammed Shafi is ‘Dayaar-e-madina’ 1975. I have seen that movie at Maratha Mandir, in one of its re-releases. I fondly remember the fabulous Rafi naat from the film:

Madad Keejiye taajdar-e-madinaa
ham aankhon se dekhen dayaar-e-madinaa

The song is posted here by Sudhir Sir, on my farmaish, no less.

28 songs composed by Mohammed Shafi are posted in the blog. Total may reach a hundred songs by him seeing that he has composed songs for 23 films, some of the them partly. There is some clarity required regarding his surname also, as everywhere that I could see including on the blog and the posts, his name is given as Mohammed Shafi, Mohammad Shafi Nagri etc. Only in the stats page on the blog, his name is mentioned as Mohammed Shafi Niazi. Having read Sudhir Sir’s post referred above, I am reasonably sure that this Mohammed Shafi, the musician is not part of the Niazi clan to which the current Prime minister of Pakistan belongs.

In this romantic duet song, I can say that there is no sign of the infamous ‘galat Mehmood’, and the singing is perfect if a bit lower than the lowest note of music. I mean Talat Mehmood, whose tally on the blog is 387 out of 450. Kaifi Azmi is not out at 211 🙂 .

The blog has 60 such duets by Talat Mehmood and Lata Mangeshkar. The last of these was posted on 31.12.2020, and the one posted prior to this was on 08/08/2017 and the third last such song was on 16.07.2015. So rare are these gems, and I am honoured to write a posts for such a rarely occurring miracle. This truly is a ‘once in a blue moon’ kind of song. This could well be the last remaining duet of Lata-Talat, but we can hope that there are 2-3 more such songs left.

My absolute favourite duet of these two is this one from Jahan Ara (1964):
Ae sanam aaj ye qasam khaayen
gayaa andhera hua ujaala
Teri chamakti aankhon ke aage
Nain miley nain huye baawre
ye nayi nayi preet hai
o dildaar bolo ek baar
Seene mein sulagte hain armaan
AAha rimjhim ke ye pyaare pyaare geet liye
Itna na mujhse tu pyaar badha

The list is not quite the perfect 10, but these are the song, I could find on the blog listed under Duets by Talat-Lata. Incidentally, this last one in the list is the song which I heard in the vegetable market last Sunday. The one I referred to in the last post of Geeta Dutt series. Lucky me to have found this song twice in 8 days. Who will miss knowing Mozart, with such songs to lose and find in a life time? Not me, for sure.

Blog Day :

4549 Post No. : 16134

The year that was … “2020” … we have finally come to the end of ‘Year 2020’ which has shaken the whole world and while people are trying to come to normal, the pandemics’ ‘aftershocks’ and its ‘new improved stains’ are still threatening to harm the humanity further.

Our heart goes to those who have lost their lives, those who have struggled and those who have faced difficulties in the ‘pandemic period’.
From that point of view all of us, those who will see the morning of ‘2021,’ are fortunate and should express our gratitude to the almighty, well-wishers, family members and friends, and to all them who have been caring for each other and maintaining social discipline to help the country fight back to this calamity.

Life moves on … and for people like me and like-minded music lovers this blog has been the main sources of motivation where we visited and enjoyed music to give us that much needed ‘therapeutic’ relief to forget for some time the harsh realities of life and sometime making us philosophical to think over and give a fight back or even to do an introspection.

Here I would like to highlight one comment on the blog by our regular inspiration Shri Manohar Lal Dave ji.

Suddenly it seems ONE DAY match for SHANKAR JAIKISHAN because there was no such T20 in their time. Thanks to Avinash ji, Atul ji…With SJ nearing 1K mark, the trio of lyricist-singer-composer in a song will be achieved and the BLOG will be complete in a sense in this gloomy year 2020. It will be an achievement for SJ to touch 1k mark first which they justifiably deserve like Sunil Gavaskar touching 10K mark in test.

I do not know how many of us have read this above comment and how everybody of us had interpreted it. But, for me it is a very big comment and while it also shares ‘feelings’ of many like me, it’s also the love for this blog and its magic that we are looking for our daily motivation here.

Regulars on the blog are aware of my (our) love for the railways 😊 When I came back from Kenya last year I had so many plans to visit my Mother (in Maharashtra) and other relatives and gang-outs with our team members, and thus travelling by train and relive the experience of train journey (after a long gap). However, fortunately or unfortunately it could not happen. The one ‘mini gang-out’ chance was missed on account of my health issues and after that the ‘lockdown’ happened and train services were cancelled. Secondly, then I got a job and it turned out to be the ‘shortest tenure job’ of my career. Meanwhile health issues continued and after some time they became ‘mind issues’😊

During this time where everything was looking going wrong the only thing I was doing ‘right’ (or I was able to do it correctly) was contributing to the blog with write-ups and sharing songs. It was like a retired person life or semi-retired life for me. (sabbatical is the other word – ‘Doctor’s terminology 😊)
Well, I was daily praying to the almighty to bring my life on ‘track’. (मेरी गाड़ी को पटरी पर ला दो भगवान्). And as it so happened the almighty got me engaged indirectly in the ‘maintenance’ of ‘tracks’ for all.
While the first job was around 35-40 kms from my residence the second one is 50-55 kms away from the city. Travelling for the first job I have to cross a over bridge on a railway line near the satellite station of the city and I used to see trains coming and going from a longer distance.
But now I am getting to watch the ‘tracks’ daily with those beautiful ‘track maintenance machines’ (innovation of the technology). Secondly a railway line passes around this place so I can watch trains coming and going. That reminds me of all the ‘train songs’ from our movies and specially ‘gaadi bulaa rahi hai’, which is a source of inspiration and motivation and how accurate are the words in this song …

dekho wo rail,
bachchon ka khel,
seekho sabak jawaanon
sar pe hai bojh,
seene mein aag,
lab pe duaa hai jaano
phir bhi ye ja rahi hai,
naghmein suna rahi hai
gaadi bula rahi hai,
seetee bajaa rahi hai

This has become my daily inspiration and motivation now.

Another good thing happening at the end of the year was the pre-engagement function of elder daughter 😊 (Sahir’s song always playing in the back ground in my mind).

So, the year ‘2020’ is ending on a very happy note for me on both home and work fronts. At work I have taken a new challenge but the daily inspiration and motivation – the train – with me. I get to read this tagline ‘the journey continues … with many miles to go’ daily now and it reminds me that the journey is still on … my journey continues…

And, that is why the today’s song is a ‘train song’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Talat Mehmood. It is from the 1955 movie ‘Do Dulhe’. Lyrics are by Pandit Indra and music is composed by B.S. Kalla.

On screen it is performed by a male and a female actress whom I am unable to identify, however Shyama and Sajjan are also seen in the picturisation of this song.

I had come across this song more than two years back now, when there was a discussion about train songs on the ‘Whatsapp group’ of Atulites.

Lastly, I wish to add about the other love of our group that is ‘cricket’. The year ended on a happy note for India as our team scored a win over Australia. The ‘year-ending’ also reminds me of statistics like most ‘runs’ or ‘wickets’ and ‘run and wickets double’ in a single ‘calendar’ year. If the scores in single calendar year is to be considered with reference to ‘write-ups’ and/ or ‘lyrics’ shared will be interesting to know (tnih) for the artists (as well as the contributors) 😊

Let us now enjoy this philosophical train song …

This is a song from the film Aplam Chaplam-1961. Talat and Lata sing with chorus, under the baton of composer Chitragupta.

If I ever make lists of composers under different headings like, Melody, Tune,Orchestra, Interludes etc, the first 5 names under the heading “Melody “would be, Ravi, Hansraj Behl, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas and Chitragupta ( not as per any Rankings). Barring Anil Biswas, all the rest four composers never got enough name and fame despite making very melodious music. Chitragupta, Khemchand Prakash and Hansraj Behl got considerably less number of leading production house films compared to what they delivered, in my opinion.

THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS ….song no. 3
———————————————–

Today’s song is from film Meenar-54. It is a duet of Lata and Talat.

BOMBAY has always been an attraction for outsiders. It is a Dream-City for most people coming from other states. Not every one’s dreams are realised, but it does provide opportunities. Then it is your luck and efforts, which will either make you or break you. This is not only about Film line but people from all walks of like look at Bombay this way.It started from the 17th Century when Bombay was just a cluster of undeveloped islands. In the 18th and 19th century Bombay developed into a Metropolitan city, having a majority of people from outside. Bombay Gazette of 1885 says that , out of a total population of 10 lakhs, almost 9 lakhs were outsiders, i.e, Non-Natives. A Minority of Britishers ruled the majority for a long time.

THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS….Song No. 2
———————————————–
Today’s song is a duet of Talat and Lata, from the film ‘Meharbani-50’. The film makes a debut on the Blog with this song.

The Music Director of this film was HAFIZ KHAN. Now, this name is a case of “Same Name Confusion” with many people. There were Two composers of the same name, active in the same time period. There was one Hafiz Khan singer, who was given the nick name of Mastana by his senior Meer Sahib. Hafiz Khan Mastana was essentially a singer. He sang in Hindi films from 1938 to 1959 in over 100 films singing about 200 songs, according to one source. He also gave music to 24 Hindi films, from 1940 to 1952. He also acted in 5 films.

The Music Director Hafiz Khan of today’s song, was a trained expert Sarangiya (Sarangi Player) from Lahore. His first film as a composer was Zeenat-1945. The other composers with him here were Meer Sahib and Rafiq Gaznavi. This film’s music became famous because of the First ever All female qawali “Aahen na bhari, shikwe na kiye” in it. Hafiz Khan had also composed 4 melodious songs in this film. He gave music to Zeenat-45, Humjoli-46, Meharbani-50, Lakeeren-54, Mera salaam-57 and his last film Shareef Daku-60.

The lines of this song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” may remind most music lovers of the “Maine Pyaar Kiya” (1989) song that goes “dil deewaana bin sajna ke maane na”. The song “dil deewaana dil mastaana maane na” is not from that movie though. It is from a much older movie viz. “Aawaaz” (1956) and it is regarded as a timeless classic.
