The name Neeraj means one that is born of water. The singular reference is towards the lotus flower. In Hindi, ‘नीरज’ is a synonym for the lotus flower.  And so is Gopaldas Saxena ‘Neeraj’ – a lotus amongst the poets and songwriters whose verses have graced the screens of Hindi Cinema.

The mention of Neeraj brings to mind a multitude of so many popular songs – songs that popular songs because of their lyrics.

All these songs, and more, touch so many threads of endearing memories, of songs heard decades back, but they still are fresh in the mind. The flavor of these songs will never grow stale, no matter how many times they are heard.

All from the pen of Gopaldas Saxena – ‘Neeraj’.

Neeraj was born on 4th January, 1924, in the village of Puravali, near Mahewa in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. His school and college education happened in Aligarh, where he also became a professor of Hindi Literature in the Dharma Samaj College. Faraway from the world of cinema, Gopaldas was writing his poetry and presenting at the kavi sammelans all across India. His introduction to films happened by accident.

In February of 1960, he was visiting Bombay to attend one such kavi sammelan. He was staying at the home of Manhar, a poet friend. One day he had a visitor, a young man named R Chandra. Chandra was earlier a student of Gopaldas in Aligarh, and now was in Bombay, connected with the film world. He was a producer, and had just completed work on the film ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’ (1960). He was now planning his next venture, to be titled ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’. He was there to request his former teacher to write the songs for his upcoming film. And so, the film journey of Neeraj was initiated.

The planned film was unusually delayed, and eventually released in 1965. This was the first film for which Neeraj wrote and recorded the songs. In the interim, however, he also got the offer to write for another film ‘Cha Cha Cha’ for the banner Bhavdeep Films, Bombay, being directed by Chandrashekhar, who was also the hero of the film. This film got released earlier than ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’, in 1964. And so it has come to be considered as the debut film for Neeraj.

The songs of ‘Cha Cha Cha’ became popular and were frequently played on the radio waves. So did the songs of ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’. These films were followed by ‘Sati Nari’ (1965) with the song “Tum Naacho Ras Barse”, then “Ye Kaun Thak Ke So Raha Hai” and “Ae Mere Watan, Mere Pyaare Watan” in the film ‘Tu Hi Meri Zindagi’ (1965), “Zindagi Dulhan Hai Ek Raat Ki” in the film ‘Dulhan EK Raat Ki’ (1966) etc. By the mid 1960s, Neeraj was a songwriter quite popular and quite much in demand in the Bombay cinema world.

Over the next part of the 1960s decade Neeraj developed fruitful and worthy association with SD Burman and Shanker Jaikishan. With S-J he worked in 16 films. With SD his association started with ‘Prem Pujari’ (1970), when Dev Anand decided to bring Neeraj in to NavKetan camp. He would do three more films with Dev Anand – ‘Gambler’ (1971), ‘Chhupa Rustam’ (1972) and ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1973). He also worked with SD Burman on the film ‘Sharmilee’ (1971).

1971 proved to be his most prolific year – 10 films came to the cinema theaters with songs written by him. And that watershed year also saw the limiting phase out of Neeraj’s association with Hindi cinema. Jaikishan passed away in 1971 and SD Burman in 1975. His two closest relationships that were built with MDs of Hindi films came to an abrupt closure. The fortunes of SJ began dwindling after the departure of Jaikishan. With the passing away of SD Burman, the work by Neeraj in Hindi cinema also started to slowly phase out. By the middle of 1970s, Neeraj’s association with Hindi film world wound itself up, and the poet returned to Aligarh. He hung up his filmi coat and returned to his earlier profession as a teacher.

Neeraj’s body of work in Hindi films comprises of just about 100 odd songs. But a glance at the portfolio of his songs, one easily identifies a very large number of popular hit songs. A sampler is presented at the beginning of this write up. And there are more.

Neeraj passed away on 19 July, 2018 at New Delhi at the age of 93.

Neeraj’s year of birth is indicated both as 1924 and 1925 in different references online. Whatever the correct year may be, this year turns out to be the centenary year for him. A week back, his birth date – 4th January was his centenary of birth.

For this post, I present this wonderful female duet song from the 1965 film ‘Sati Nari’. This is a fairly fast paced and melodious composition by Pt Shivram Krishna. The singing voices are of Usha Timothy and Kamal Barot. The words of the song tell about Radha ji being advised by her friends not to go to the banks of Jamuna river, because there Krishna will ensnare in his trap with his charm and beauty – “Wahaan Kanha Phaanse Machhli Bina Kaanta Dor Ke”.

A fun song of sahelis teasing Radha ji about her terms of endearment with Krishna. A wonderfully imagined, composed and rendered song – it is a pleasurable listen.

‘Dhoop Chhaaon’ (1977) was a movie produced by KK Jain & SN Jain and directed by Prahlad Sharma for Trishul Arts. It had Hema Malini, Yogita Bali, Shaukat Kaifi Azmi, Sanjeev Kumar, Om Shivpuri, Nasir Hussain, Gajanan Jagirdar, Yunus Parvez, Dinesh Hingoo etc in the cast. Lyricists used were Virendra Mishra, Vitthalbhai Patel, Vishweshwar Sharma and Kaifi Azmi. Shankar-Jaikishan were the music directors (of course it was Shankar alone after Jaikishan’s untimely death in 1971).

From what I have read online, the plot was run-of-the-mill.

Dr. Paras (Sanjeev Kumar) is assigned to go and treat a particular village during some serious epidemic. He does that successfully, additionally he falls in love with the most beautiful village belle – Lajwanti a.k.a Lajjo (Hema Malini). He leaves the village after promising Lajjo of returning and marrying her. But (as in all stories of this type) he gets embroiled in his work on reaching the city as well as in his boss’s daughter Dr. Manju (Yogita Bali). Meantime Lajjo loses her eyesight, and Dr. Paras and Dr. Manju are the doctors who are going to treat her. Isn’t that enough to create confusion in the lives of the protagonists?

There were four songs in this movie of which the most popular song, which was regularly heard on the radio was Joode Mein Gajra Mat Baandho and that is already posted. Another song from this movie Jis Roop Mein Bhi Aao is also on the blog. Here is the next song. It is a typical song where we see some village girls tease a friend of theirs on her falling in love. The group of ‘sahelis’ are led by Madhu Malhotra – she used to be part of the unnamed extras when this movie was made. Usha Mangeshkar and Kalyani Mitra are the playback singers in this song.

Why are we having this song? Because it is the birthday of one of the top actresses of that time. She became popular playing Meera, Seetha, Geetha, Basanti etc. Raj Kapoor was her first hero. Just like with Rekha & Rakhee even Hema Malini (today’s birthday girl) had older male actors as her heroes to begin with. Her first film with Dharmendra came in 1970 -“Tum Haseen Main Jawaan”. Subsequently she co-starred the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Jeetendra, Rakesh Roshan, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna etc. She was appreciated in a negative character in ‘Laal Patthar’ (1971) and ‘Jamai Raja’ (1990) later in her career. She is still So Very Breathtakingly Gorgeous and so approachable.

Also, remembering music director Shankar of the Shankar Jaikishan duo. Yesterday, 15th October was the birth centenary of Shankar, born in Hyderabad on 15th October, 1922.

Today’s song is from a film which is 86 years old- Pardesi Sainya-1935.

When I choose a film song for a post, there is always a thought behind it. Sometimes the cast consists of some actor who spilled over from the silent era and is on the verge of ending his career now. Sometimes the Director or the Music Director is absolutely unknown or a first timer on our Blog. Such and similar matters arouse my interest and I start gathering information about these people. Many times, I am the first person to write about that actor or director etc.

Not many people understand the importance of these things but from a Historical point of view, it is very important. Sometimes information of just one paragraph also has to be culled from half a dozen sources. perseverance and consistency are required to get such information. Even today’s film is one such film where some revealing names are there.

Film Pardesi Sainya alias My Darling aka Chaand ka Tukda-1935 was made by Gandharva Cinetone. In those days two names for a film was a common matter, but here there are 3 names. This was a company owned and floated by Baburao patel, before he started his famous Film Magazi8ne-” Film India”. Patel began this banner in the Silent Era and his first Directorial venture was a Silent film-” Kismat”-1931…the year India had entered the Talkie Era. His first Talkie film was Mahananda-33. Then came maharani-34, Bala Joban-34 and last in the first segment was Pardesi Sainya-35. The banner had a second segment after 9 years, with films Draupadi-44 and Gwalan-46, both to promote Susheela Rani- a Konkani good looking singer/dancer and a journalist of sorts. She failed in films, but joined Film India magazine as a Sub Editor, only to become a Sub-kuchh by marrying Baburao Patel !

The music was composed by one Dinkar Rao Amembal – a name hardly anybody has heard. Not only now but even in those days. later on he became famous is another thing. His elder brother A.Sunder Rao was a good Harmonium player and younger brother A Bhaskar Rao was already in the film line as a composer.

Collecting information about Dinkar Rao has been a tiring job and I had to take extra efforts.Finally I collated information on Dinkar Rao from several sources. I present here today, for the first time-as far as I know, information on Dinkarrao Amembal On any Blog discussing old films and music.

DINKAR RAO AMEMBAL AKA D’ AMEL…….Dinkar Rao was born on 24-9-1909 in Guwahati (Assam) in a CXhitrapur Saraswat Bramhin family of South Canara. The family was known as a Music loving family. He studied upto Matriculation in Ganapati High School at Mangalore. After that his family shifted to Bombay.

Dinkar was never trained in classical music by any expert. He had a sweet voice and he was self taught. He started his B.Sc. studies in Fergusson College, Poona. In the final year, he left studies and returned to Bombay. He joined Indian States Broadcasting company ( a precursor to All India Radio), as a singer and instrument player on contract basis in 1927. He was a Harmonium expert like his elder brother A.Sunder Rao- who had a Music career in south India. Dinkar Rao had master Krishnarao Phulambrikar as his Idol. After 1947, when Harmonium was banned in India by the Congress Government, he learnt Flute and Violin. He became an expert in Brass Flute.

In 1935, he started V.U.B. Orchestra. He used his name as D’Amel and broadcast several self made musical melodies on Radio. After establishment of All India Radio, his orchestra was taken over and became Akashvani Orchestra. In 1935, Dinkar Rao entered the film line.

As a Music Director he gave music to 3 films independently. They were Rangeela Nawab-35. In this film he did a small role and sang one song also. Then came Pardesi Sainya-35 and Bombshell-35, which he also directed. After 12 years, he gave music to film Beete Din along with another composer M.Rauf Osmania. His younger brother A.Bhaskar Rao was already a Music Director in Hindi films.

In 1936. Dinkar Rao was appointed Programme Director in the newly formed All India Radio, Bombay station, wherein he served till 1967. As a Director he worked with Shridhar parsekar, Alla Rakha Khan, Master Ibrahim etc etc. He was famous for creatively introducing several new popular musical programmes. While in All India Radio, he worked closely with the German Jew Walter Kauffmann, who is credited to be the inventor of the famous A.I.R. Signature tune, which is played before a Station starts on All India Radio.

He worked with many poets of Marathi and presented their songs. He served A.I.R. for 35 years including his earlier services. He was awarded by Music Research Academy of Calcutta. he was a devotee of Sufi Saint Ashraf Khan (this Sufi Saint was a Hindi film actor and singer. He had also been a popular actor on Gujarati stage dramas).

In later years Dinkar Rao became totally deaf in one year’s time. He died suddenly on 6-2-1990 at Bombay. ( I thank parrikar.org, kamath.com, Prakash Burde and Madhav Imarte for the above information.)

The cast of the film was Mubarak, Padma Devi, Shirin bano,Azurie, Raja pandit, Kamal Bhivandkar, Vaskar, nandu khote and many others. Actress padma devi was from Bengal and a spill over from the Silent Era into the Talkie films. She had a special relationship with Baburao patel. She used to move around in his magazine office at will in later times. When Susheela Ranitook over as a Sub Editor of the magazine initially and then as the ‘ Sub Kuchh’ of Patel, she cleverly cut off the association of padma Devi and baburao patel to have total control.

Raja pandit was an actor and a singer. His first film was Sati mahananda, then came Maharani-34, bala joban-34, Bhikaran-35 and Pardesi Sainya-35-his last film in Hindi. he sang songs in every film. After this he turned to marathi films and became a producer/Director. Kamal Bhivandkar did a child role in this film. She was about 12 years of age. She became friendly with Raja Pandit. Kamal became a popular big Heroine, with a new name Ratnamala and acted in big banner films in Hindi. Raja pandit and Ratnamala got married when she was hardly 16 year old. She continued to be a successful actress inb Hindi and later in Marathi films. Raja Pandit was a failed producer/director. After a few years they separated. They had a son-Jay Kumar, who died young, in an accident.

Shirin bano was the eldest sister of actress Poornima (Meher Bano). She acted in 18 films and then got married to director Nanabhai Bhatt. Mahest Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt are their sons. Nandu Khote was the father of Shubha khote- the bubbly actress of the 50’s and 60’s, in Hindi and Marathi films.

I have written short notes on these actors because their full details would have made this post unwieldy and very long, which normally readers avoid to read. I also dislike long posts. While there is no rule on the ideal length of a post, I try to remain within an average of 40 to 50 lines or near to it.

No information on the storyline or other details of this film. Today’s song is a duet of Shirin Bano and Raja Pandit. The Lyricist is not mentioned in HFGK, but the MD was Dinkar Rao Amembal.

Today’s song is from the 1974 movie ‘Hawas’. This movie is mostly known by its song “Teri Galiyon Mein Na Rakkhenge Kadam“. I remember that this song was frequently played on radio and loud speakers in those years. And I too associate this movie only with this song and had never tried to listen to the other songs of this movie. And yes, I never get to watch this movie until now.

So, when our dear Prakash ji had sent a song from this movie, I was eager to know about the other songs from this movie. So far, two songs (including the song mentioned above) from this movie have been posted on the blog.

‘Hawas’ is directed by Sawan Kumar for ‘Mercury Productions’. He was also the producer, storywriter and the lyricist of this movie. The star cast includes Anil Dhawan, Neetu Singh, Bindu, Vidya Sinha, Shiv Kumar, Fariyal, Pradeep Kumar, Randhawa and Mehmood. Supported by Pichoo Kapoor, Ashok Khanna, Randhir, Asit Sen, Shera, Basant, Neelam, Nelu, Sharmilee, Jugnu, and Coca-cola. Rekha and Vinod Mehra made friendly appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie is written by Sawan Kumar while the screenplay was written by Bimal Dutt. Dialogues were written by Ameen Sayani and editing of this movie was done by YG Chouhan. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.06.1974 with ‘restricted viewing’ certificate.

This movie has five songs sung by Asha Bhonsle (four songs) and Mohd Rafi (one solo song).  Lyrics for all the five songs are written by Sawan Kumar and music is composed by Usha Khanna.

Today, 8th July is the sixty-second birth anniversary of actress Neetu Singh (born on 08th July, 1958). On this occasion here is a song from this movie picturized on her. She is lip-syncing Asha Bhonsle’s voice on the screen and many other female artists and Anil Dhawan can be seen in the picturization of this song.

I had never listened to this song earlier. It’s lovely song and grows upon if we listen to it more and more.

Today’s debut film is ‘Krishnavtaar’ from 1964. The film has nine songs listed, and as I scanned this list of songs, I am amazed to see so many favorites from radio listening day – songs that are so much alive in memory, but without being aware of any other details.

The film is produced under the banner of Kashi Film Corporation, Bombay, and is directed by S Dosaani. The list of actors includes Shyam, Lakshmi Chhaaya, Sujata, Bhagwan, Sabina, Sadhna Khote, Prem Sagar, Jagdish Kanwal, Ajay and Radheyshyam etc. The nine songs of this film are shared between two song writers – four written by Anjaan and five written by Yogesh. This song is by Yogesh Gaud. The wonderful musical compositions of this film are prepared by Suresh Kumar.

The song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur. She has lent her voice to as many as 6 songs out of nine in this film, four of which are solo songs.

This is a very lovely song in which the lady is complaining that her beauty prep and her appearance is being disturbed on purpose by the flurries of the wind. She is going to see her beau, and the wind on espying her beauty, is trying to disturb and dishevel her makeup and her appearance. The wind is having a bad eye on her, out of jealousy.

Wonderful pieces of sitar music have been intertwined into this song. Lovely music and lovely rendition – a song worth preserving in the memory.

With this post, I return to one of the requests of Arvinder ji that has been pending for some time now. His reminders keep coming to me, and there are more pending requests from him lined up in my inbox.

This song can well be the continuation of the ‘Memory Ticklers’ series. A lilting melody that was often heard on the radio when I used to regularly listen, and then later it seemed to have faded from the memories. Depend on Arvinder ji to recall and remind to dig up such gems to once again be played and listened.
