Hullo Atuldom
Presenting
“Badi Mushkil Baba
Badi Mushkil
Gore gore gaalon pe hain
Kala kala til”
A song that I love to see. Why?!!
(1) Because of its choreography
(2) Because of the smiling ladies in the sequence.
(3) A visual treat.
I hope the followers of the blog will get the same pleasure from this song that I experience every time I see it. The song is from the Rajkumar Santoshi produced & directed “Lajja” (2001). The story of the film was woman-centric just like “Damini” (1993); the major difference between ‘Damini’ & ‘Lajja’ being that ‘Lajja’ had four female characters as its protagonist.
The film had a cast of highly talented, super versatile actors with Rekha, Madhuri Dixit, Mahima Chaudhry, Manisha Koirala (as the main ladies), Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgan, with Danny, Gulshan Grover, Suresh Oberoi, Razak Khan, Johnny Lever, Sharman Joshi, Tinnu Anand, Farida Jalal, Dina Pathak, Anjan Shrivastav, Beena, Govind Namdeo, Rohini Hattangadi etc in supporting roles. The film also had Sonali Bendre & Urmila Matondkar for a song sequence each. Also there were Viju Khote, Asrani, Jagdeep, Samir Soni, Jaya Bhattacharya in guest appearances. That is a very long list and most of the supporting actors have been given near-equal screen time.
The film was the story of Vaidehi (Manisha Koirala) who is a girl with conservative family values and undergoes a culture shock when she has to shift to the USA after marriage to Raghu (Jackie Shroff). The film then follows her journey after she leaves her husband and the USA; comes to India and encounters other ladies in similar or worse situations. The ladies Maithili (Mahima Chaudhry), Janki (Madhuri Dixit), and Rampyari (Rekha) are all shown to be coping with the good & bad happenings in their lives to the best of their abilitiies. Mathili & Rampyari have Raju (Anil Kapoor- a common thief) & Bhulwa (Ajay Devgan- a not-so-dreaded bandit) helping the ladies in their own way.
In spite of good performances by the cast, excellent songs, and being well-directed with a good second half the film was not a commercial success. It was felt by some critics that the film tried to pack in too many issues viz. dowry, computer education, female literacy, (only) females being accountable in society and female infanticide. But Rekha & Madhuri were nominated for best supporting actress at the 47th Filmfare awards and Ajay Devgan for best supporting actor.
The film had background score was by Ilaiyaraja and Anu Malik was the music director for the songs that were sung by Richa Sharma, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik, Anuradha Paudwal, Anuradha Sriram, K.K., Shubha Mudgal & Lata Mangeshkar. The songs were written by Sameer.
Today, Alka Yagnik, the playback singer of this song turns a year older. She was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in a Gujarati family. Herr mother was a Indian Classical music singer and Alka too beegan singing at a very young age. She came to Mumbai with her parents to try her luck & was advised by Kalyanji-Anandji as well as Laxmikant of Laxmi-Pyare duo to wait a few years for her voice to mature a bit more before taking up professional assignments. She was first heard in Rajshri Productions’ “Payal Ki Jhankaar” and followed it up with “Hotel”, “Itni Si Baat”, “Hamaari Bahu Alka” etc. She tasted real success with “Mere Angane Mein” from “Lawaaris” (1981). And, since then, she has her place in the music industry & is the voice for Madhuri Dixit, Manisha Koirala, Juhi Chawla etc. She has been a Judge on a few reality shows on various television channels.
Here is wishing her All the best and a life filled with music.

It is 05th August, so its Kajol’s 46th birthday today. For this once I thought I will look for a outdoorsy song to post. Actually, this last week is turning out to be too much in a straight row, if this gets written and posted on time, 4 posts in a week for me.
I think, by now or by unlock – 5, wherever it’s on, people are quite fed up of being cooped up in the house. No going out just for the sake of it. Some of us are attending office on rotation and some are doing full time ‘work from home’. But we can’t be complaining, as there is a class of people who cannot work from home under any circumstances, among these a huge section is of those who need to work daily for livelihood and to survive. People working in health sector have had to be on the front-line as well as police personnel have had a tougher 4 -5 months. This crisis is not looking as if going away too soon. It’s the new normal for all intents and purposes. Now people have reconciled to this new normal also.
Initially people had disbelief, thought that this is not happening. Than it happened, people thought this is not going to last, it will go away soon. Now this is 7th month in to the crisis, which is a global tragedy of the proportion present generations have not seen. Only the war veterans might have some similar experience, but they have been centered in conflict areas or war zones. The plague of the last century also affected some places at a time. Now the globe has experienced a war like situation simultaneously. Some countries were able to cope better than others, which is the reality of this unequal world. There are humanitarian crisis’s happening and looming in different countries of the world. All are waiting with bated breath for the bubble to burst, hoping for the best and fearing the worst. Even the detailed messages and videos about the crisis and situation and the immunity, treatment, etc. also have dried up.
aaj yun mauj-dar-mauj ġham tham gayā is tarah ġham-zadoñ ko qarār aa gayā
jaise ḳhush-bū-e-zulf-e-bahār aa gayī jaise paiġhām-e-dīdār-e-yār aa gayā
Man is a social animal, we were taught in school. So the new normal for some years to come, is physical distancing. No interacting with strangers and those who do not matter to you personally. This could even be the nature’s own way of preserving the civilization, by correcting the behavioral norms. One can hope that this is so, and things will turn out for the better. For Allah (SWT) is the best of planners, and he knows what is best for us. This belief system is a necessary to cope with the changing circumstances and fear of the unknown. Psychological impact of this crisis is still unfathomable. The experts may still be experimenting with the different case scenarios.
Here is a Nazm by Muneer Niyazi, titled “Sa’ee”
Kisi sa’ee ka naqsh gehra nahi hai
Har ik saaya ek aankh hai
Jis mein ishrat-kadon na-rasaa khwahishon
An-kahi dil-nasheen daastaanon ka melaa lagaa hai
Magar aankh ka sehr palkon ki chilman ki halki si jumbish hai
Aur kuchh nahi hai
Kisi aankh ka sehr daa’yim nahi hai
Har ik saaya
chalti haw aka pur-asrar jhonka hai
Jo dur ki baat se
Dil ko bechain kar ke chala jaayegaa
Har koyi jaanta hai
Hawaaon ki baatien der tak rehne wali nahin hain
Kisi aankh ka sehr daa’yim nahi hai
Kisi sa’ee ka naqsh gehra nahi hai
The impact on the world economy is just not thinkable. Some micro plans will be on hold, but macro plans will go on as usual, this is my reading of the situation.
This time last year, I was at Hajj – 2019, by the grace of Almighty. This year it wouldn’t have been possible as only few locals were able to perform Hajj this year.
Micro plans on hold means; people like me will not be able to go on a holiday to enjoy the nature’s beauty, peace and quiet. I have had enough of peace and quiet to last for some time at least. The street outside my building is so quite during all hours, it is impossible to believe that it could be any more silent. But come nightfall, it is so silent that it is scary sometimes.
So let us to outdoors to the natural rivers running through mountains, lakeshore and the shikaara.
This song I am presenting on Kajol’s birthday is from the film “Dil Kya Kare” , which stars herself with her husband and Mahima chuadhary. Alka Yagnik sings this solo for Kajol, I think she is imagining. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and composers are Jatil-Lalit. The composition, lyrics and singing are all very appealing. There are two stanza’s only, but a well written song. But there is something lacking in the recording. May be very few music instruments or the recording is separately for the vocal and music, mixed later.
Anyway, it is a nicely posturized song in the outdoor locations. So good to look at 🙂 .

Lyrics
Pyaar ke liye chaar pal kam nahin thhe
Pyaar ke liye chaar pal kam nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Pyaar ke haseen kab ye mausam nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Yeh din barson ke baad aaya aa
Kuchh tumhen kuchh hamen yaad aayaa
Kasak phir ye dil mein uthhi hai
Honthon pe baat aa ke ruki hai
Kabhi itne majboor to ham nahin thhe
Kabhi itne majboor to ham nahin thhe
Pyaar ke liye chaar pal kam nahin thhe
Pyaar ke haseen kab ye mausam nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Aaa aaa aaa

Aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa
Agar tum ye dil maang lete
Jaan-e-man

Tumhen kaise ham bhool jaate
Mar ke bhi tum hamen yaad aate
Tumhen hai pata
bewafaa ham nahin thhe
Tumhen hai pata
bewafaa ham nahin thhe
Pyaar ke liye chaar pal kam nahin thhe
Pyaaar ke liye chaar pal kam nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe
Kabhi tum nahin thhe kabhi ham nahin thhe

Hullo Atuldom
Today’s song is from a movie that released 32 years ago. This movie and song were instrumental in catapulting our today’s birthday girl into the big-league.
She had made her debut in Bollywood in 1984 through a Rajshri Productions movie which had a story similar to the Jaya Bhaduri starrer “Uphaar” of the 70s. Then followed a string of movies; which were not so successful; where she was an “also there” or what is generally termed as a glamour doll. Even 1988 saw her in four movies three of which were commercial failures. So we can term her start to be something like what the Big B experienced in the 70s.
But her fourth release of 1988 (release date 11 November) made her an overnight star along with re-affirming Anil Kapoor’s standing in the industry.
So today’s song is from N.Chandra’s “Tezaab” and with this we are wishing our “Mohini” a.k.a Madhuri Dixit (Nene got added to her name after marriage to Dr. Nene in 1999). Madhuri played a unfortunate, kindhearted and gentle girl who is forced to dance by her father so that his drunken ways are financed. She looked the role of a meek, frail girl but danced brilliantly.
Most Madhuri’s subsequent movies had atleast one great dance number. Who can forget “humko aaj kal hain intezaar”; “mera piya ghar aaya o ramji”; “Tamma tamma loge”; “dhak dhak karne laga” and the cream of them all “choli ke peeche kya hain” to name the most popular ones (there are many more) As I write this I find all the songs that I have mentioned here are yet to make their appearance on the blog except for the song from Khalnayak “choli ke peeche”.
She made an excellent pair with whoever she was cast opposite but the pairing with Anil Kapoor was a different class altogether. They did 18 films together including the 2018 release “Total Dhamaal”. There is a strange camaraderie between the two actors which is evident in any scene that they enact.
She must be among the few actress who have acted with pairs of father and son- Rishi and Ranbir Kapoor, Vinod and Akshaye Khanna for example.
Today’s song has a female and male version. Female playback -Alka Yagnik and male – Amit Kumar. The songs were written by Javed Akhtar and Laxmi-Pyare were the composers.
The male version is shot on the streets of Mumbai and we can see the steps of the famous Asiatic Library; also Akbarally’s which was one of the first departmental store of Mumbai (have done shopping there a few times when the kids were small.)
The Female version is a stage song which ends when a group of bandits or thugs led by Kiran Kumar, invade the scene with the intention to corner Anupam Kher (who played the drunkard father of Mohini). They leave carrying Mohini with them when they cannot find Anupam Kher.
So here is wishing the ever so beautiful brilliant dancer and of a million-bucks smile a long and healthy life and success in all her future ventures too. She still has a lot of time before she calls it a day. She is still very young.

Today (4 may 2020) is a day when no notable HFM personality was born. But on this day, one person totally unconnected with HFM was born in a far away land 365 years ago. He would invent a musical instrument that has played a vital role in the development of HFM. Movies of 1950s and 1960s were not complete if this instrument did not appear in at least in one song. In one movie, this instrument has even appeared in four songs !
The instrument that we are talking about is Piano. It was invented in 1709 by Bartolomeo Cristofori di Francesco(4 May 1655 – 27 January 1731), was an Italian maker of musical instruments.
Nine of his pianos still survive. Three of them are preserved in three museums, one in New York (Metropolitan Museum), Rome (Museo Nazionale degli Strumenti Musicali) and Leipzig university( Museum of musical instruments)
Hindi movies have had hundred on Piano songs in it. This blog has as many as 147 Piano songs. The earliest is from 1938. Pianon songs came into their own in HFM from late 1940s and ruled the roost in HFm till late 1970s. After that, Piano songs became few and far between. Pianos, which depicted class and prosperity of the character playing it in those days. From 1970s onwards, actors started sporting guitar instead. Guitar may have looked jazzy and spectacular, but it disd not have the old world charm of a Piano.
Most Piano songs of note (pun unintended) have already been covered in the blog.
When I searched for Piano songs on internet, I came across a few writeups, that discussed well known Piano songs. All of them have already been covered in the blog. When I went through one of these writeups (posted on 5 october 2016), I found the description of these songs familiar. I realised that the description was very much mine ! When I checked up these songs in the blog, I realised that this article had copied and pasted contents of the writeup of Piano songs in the blog ! For instance, my description of “Bhaabhi”(1938) Piano song goes like
This song is picturised as a piano song. P Jairaj is playing the piano and this song is sung by Renuka Devi. Her father V H Desai looks on and later the villain Rama Sukul too comes in and watches her sing with disapproval.
You will find this description faithfully copied and pasted in that article.
My description of “Andaaz”(1949) piano song, “hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe”, was
Dilip Kumar sits at the piano at night and sings this song. And Nargis arrives with her pet dog and watches Dilip Kumar sing the song, clutching her dog like a pillow.
This description is faithfully copied and pasted in that writeup.
Like this, all the 25 Piano songs described there copies contents from this blog, without giving credit. How very cheap of this so called blogger. I have posted a comment in that blog which is unlikely to see the light of the day, of course.
Coming to Piano songs, I quickly realised that these songs had gone the way of qawwaali songs, cabarat songs etc- viz they had vanished as the golden era of HFM drew to a close.
One can still find a few piano songs here and there, but these songs are nowhere near the same class of Piano songs that were created during the golden era of HFM.
After some frenetic search, I have been able to locate one as yet unrepresented Piano song. It is from a “recent” movie. Even the movie, a musical blockbuster, is not yet represented in the blog.
Today, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the man who gave us Piano, here is a piano song from “Saajan”(1991). Yes, this movie, the biggest box office hit of the year 1991 was not there in the blog till now. This movie, which was produced by K C Bokadia and directed by Lawrence Desouza had Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Kader Khan, Reema Laagoo, Laxmikant Berde, Ekta Sohini, Anjana Mumtaz, Dinesh Hingoo, Yunus Parvez, Raju Shreshtha, Tej Sapru, Vikas Anand etc in it.
I had fond memories of watching this movie in Vadodara in 1991, where I was attending a course those days.
The movie had ten songs in it.
Here is the first song from “Saajan”(1991) to appear in the blog. This song has male and female solo versions sung by S P Balasubhramanyam and Alka Yagnik respectively. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.
It is the female version, picturised on stage, with Madhuri Dixit near a piano, that makes this song a Piano song. Unlike Piano songs of yore, some sort of mist engulfs her and the piano. I wonder what the director was trying to achieve with this kind of picturisation.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of the creator of Piano, here is this memorable Piano song from 1991.
With this song, “Saajan”(1991) makes its debut in the blog.

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post is from ‘Kaho Na…Pyar Hai’, a movie that was released on 14th January 2000. It is produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan. This film was planned as the launch vehicle for Hrithik Roshan in Bollywood with Ameesha Patel playing the female lead. This movie had the new comer Hrithik play a double role which he handled well and the movie was liked by the critics and masses. The songs were a rage and the movie a huge hit.
It was a simple love story where a rich girl (Sonia- Ameesha Patel) and poor boy (Rohit- Hrithik) meet and fall in love much against the girl’s father’s liking. But the twist comes when the boy gets killed in a road accident and a sad heroine discovers his look-alike (Raj) in New Zealand where she goes to recover from the shock of her love’s death. As an added bonus the fellow in New Zealand also falls in love with her; only this boy is decently wealthy. So logically her father should have no objection but again there is a twist- on landing in India the police inspectors who caused Rohit’s accident mistake that Raj is Rohit and start a man-hunt for him. In between all this twist and turns it is revealed that all of this was with Sonia’s father’s instructions. Now please don’t scratch your brains in confusion, the movie ends with Raj and Sonia getting together, and her father and his aides being arrested- very simple story.
We have been visiting this movie every time for Hrithik’s birthday, the last time being 2015. So now everyone has got a clue why this song today.😊! Ah yes, a day late, of course. Hrithik turned 44 yesterday. The song is quite appropriate for the occasion – there is a party and cake and lots of friends and song and dance. Lovely song and such innocence on the faces of the lead actors.
This song is my personal favourite specially the point where Hrithik shows the action of blowing the candles. Oooh! The character he plays in the song is of Rohit. He is being helped by his friend Vrajesh Hirjee in getting the attention of Rajesh Tandon (the fair guy next to Ameesha at the beginning of the song), his boss’s son, who owns a restaurant and is looking for a singer and a live band for the hotel. And all these rich boys and gals are so accommodating that they not only allow the gate-crasher to sing but also enjoy themselves along with him. Hrithik bagged the best male-debut actor of that year along with the best male actor award for this movie – a first in the industry.
The choreographer of this song – Farah Khan – also celebrated her 53rd birthday day before yesterday. She is the niece of former child stars Daisy and Honey Irani, daughter of their sister Maneka Irani and stuntman-turned-filmmaker Kamran Khan. She is a fan of Michael Jackson and is a self-trained dancer. She landed an assignment in Mansoor Khan’s ‘Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar’ (1992) when Saroj Khan left the project. She has won the Filmfare award of best choreographer six times one of it being for a song from ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’ – “Ek Pal Ka Jeena“.
Wishing both Hrithik Roshan and Farah Khan a belated Happy Birthday.

Here is a lovely 1970 style song from 1996. The movie is ” Raja Hindustani” and listening to this song almost reminds me of the movie “Asha”(1980) and its dhaba song “Jaane ham sadak ke logon se mahlo waale kyun jalte hain”.
