Today (15 August 2022) is the 76th Independence day for India. So India has completed 75 years of independence. I have seen 60 Independence days. It is the 15th Independence day for the blog. This constitutes a nice 5:4:1 ratio.

Only 15 years had passed since independence when I was born. The country was still ruled by its first Prime Minister (Jawaharlal Nehru) and first President (Dr Rajendra Prasad). The country was still trying to find its feet. When I look back at the situation of India those days, India was in as bad shape as the most underdeveloped countries in Africa. The literacy rate was abysmal. Life expectancy was 32 years.

Here I present some important indices that India had in 1947. I have also provided figures for the same indices in 1962, 2008 and 2022. The change in values over the years have been quite remarkable.

Life expectancy in india in years
1947 1962 2008 2022
32 42 66 70

We can see that the life expectancy in India has become more than doubled from 32 years to 70 years.

Infant mortality rate (per 1000 live births)
1947 1962 2008 2022
218 157 49 27

Infant mortality rate was quite alarming till a few decades ago. The figure of 27 deaths per 1000 live births is still unsatisfactory but it is a vast improvement from the figure of 1947.

Maternal mortality rate (per 100000 live births)
1947 1962 2008 2022
2000 1000 212 103

The Maternal mortality rate had improved by nearly 20 times in 75 years.

Literacy rate in India in %
1947 1962 2008 2022
12 % 29 % 70 % 77%

India was among the most illiterate nations on earth. Today Indian literacy rate is quite high and that has enabled India to take rapid strides in economic activities that require skilled manpower, viz service sector and manufacturing sector.

Population of India in crores
1947 1962 2008 2022
34 cr 47 cr 121 cr 140 cr

Indian population had quadrupled in 75 years.

Human Development Index
1947 1962 2008 2022
NA NA 0.563 0.645

Human development index was devised in 1990. It consists of indices of health, education and standard of living. As health, education and standard of living improves, so does HDI.

Agriculture production in Million tonnes
1947 1962 2008 2022
50 Million Tonnes (50 % of GDP) 71 Million tonnes 216 million tonnes 316 Million tonnes (17%)

Population has quadrupled whereas food grain production had increased more than six times. It had happened while agriculture sector is now contributing less than 20 % of GDP,  while it was over 50 % of GDP in 1947.

GDP in billion $
1947 1962 2008 2022
24 42 1200 3200

The figures are based on the current values of those years using exchange rate of those days.

GDP per capita in $
1947 1962 2008 2022
70 90 1000 2277

The figures are based on the current values of those years using exchange rate of those days.

One can notice that India, despite its problems, including wrong policy decisions and adverse geo political circumstances, has come up a long way in last 75 years. Now India seems poised to take its rightful place among the nations of the world. It is a matter of time (three decades in my estimate) before India will join the list of advanced nations of the world.

There are lots of things that can be mentioned here, but the above tables give us clear idea about the progress that India has made in various areas.

On this occasion, here is a song from an unreleased movie called ‘Aaj Watan Ne Hamen Pukaara’ (1970). The movie was made under the banner of Sangam Productions, Bombay. That is all the information that is known about this movie.

This song is sung by Rafi and chorus. Bismil Ludhianvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Mohinder Kaur.

Lyrics of this rare song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy 76th independence day.

Mukesh and his Co-Singers – 8
——————————————–

Today, we take up Mukesh’s association with playback singer Jagjit Kaur wherein there is a solitary duet and that too in an unreleased film called ‘Hum Ek Hain’.

There are 3 released movies named ‘Hum Ek Hain’ and one unreleased. Mukesh has sung one solo in one of the released movies under Usha Khanna and one solo and a duet in the unreleased movie under Khaiyyam. Confused? Well, me too and hence the table below.

Films titled ‘HUM EK HAIN’
Year of release Composer Mukesh songs
1946 Hunslal Bhagatram Nil
1969 Usha Khanna One solo
Unreleased Khayyam A solo and a duet with Jagjit Kaur
1982 N/A N/A

Further, I came across a rather familiar song which is again represented by the name “Hum Ek Hain” – “Awaaz Do Hum Ek Hain.  And seeing that popular actors have been featured in the video version of the song, one is left to imagine which of the above films, the said song belongs to.

Fortunately, I did not have to struggle much to trace the details as it was amply clear that it was a stand-alone NFS (1962) patriotic song produced by Govt of India’s Films Division and sung with much gusto by Rafi Saab. Details of the said song are represented on our blog in this link here. Of all the composers Khayyam Saab scored music for the album thereby creating additional curiosity as well as confusion for me.

Now, an original film booklet sheet of 1969 film in which Mukesh has a solo is easily available on the net and is reproduced below.

For some strange reason, Mukesh’s name is missing in the list of playback singers. I am not sure if the song was dropped from the film soundtrack, but the solo does exist in audio form.

I have covered one post on Mukesh’s complete association with Usha Khanna – “Tera Mera Pyaar Koi, Aaj Kal Ki To Baat Nahin“, and two separate posts on his filmi (“Sab Tthaath Pada Reh Jaayega“) and NFS songs (“Na Hui Gar Mere Marne Se Tasalli Na Sahi“) under composer Khaiyyam. Many songs in the said three posts are still available for grabs for covering in the blog.

Coming to Mukesh’s combo with Jagjit Kaur, I have said in the beginning of the post that there is a solitary duet. It’s a surprise that the two artists did not collaborate more in spite of Mukesh seemingly to be close to Khayyam Saab family. However, we should remember that Khayyam Saab himself engaged Jagit Kaur sparingly for playback songs and relied more on the two Mangeshkar sisters.

As we are well aware, both Khayyam Saab and his wife Jagjit Kaur left for their heavenly abode in the very recent past.

Khayyam Saab:           18 February 1927 – 19 August 2019
Jagjit Kaur:                1930 – 15 August 2021

I pay tributes to both the artists and bring forth this duet of Jagjit Kaur and Mukesh from an unreleased film titled ‘Hum Ek Hain’ and composed by Khayyam Saab. Jagjit Kaur sings in unison with Mukesh and her voice is not heard separately. Such is the rarity of this only duet of the combo.

Song – Ram Kaho Ya Rahim Kaho Tum Krishn Kaho Ya Kareem Kaho  (Hum Ek Hain) (UR) (1960s) Singer – Mukesh, Jagjit Kaur (only in chorus with Mukesh), Lyrics – Jaan Nisar Akhtar, MD – Khayyaam

wo hai allah
wo hai ishwar
wo hai mukti dhaam
ek nahin sau roop hain us ke
ek nahin sau naam

ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
awaaz tumhari pahunchegi
maalik tak jo bhi naam bhajo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho

mandir masjid ek hain dono us ke aage
uski leela dekh naa paayen mahal abhaage
duniya rasta bhool gayi hai aisa laage
mann mein koi khot rahe na mann tab jaage
aapas mein matbhed na barto
itna mat abhimaan karo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
awaaz tumhari pahunchegi
maalik tak jo bhi naam bhajo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho

zaaten paaten varg niyam sab jhootthe naare
rasmen hon yaa reet ke bandhan dhong hain saare
nadaanon ne aap kiye hain ye batwaare
wo hai sab ka aaj bhi us ko sab hain pyaare
deen yahi hai dharm yahi hai
maanavta ka maan karo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
awaaz tumhari pahunchegi
maalik tak jo bhi naam bhajo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho

kaun ye mandir dwaar khada hai sheesh jhukaaye
(aaa aaa aaa aaa)

tarse par bhagwan ke darshan kar na paaye
(aaa aaa aaa aaa)

sab par mandir dwaar khulen kab wo din aaye
(hmm hmm hmm hmm)

kab tak ye andher kahaan tak ye anyaay..ae..ae
kab tak ye andher kahaan tak ye anyaay..ae..ae
jis ne sabko ek banaaya
uska mat apmaan karo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
awaaz tumhari pahunchegi
maalik tak jo bhi naam bhajo
ram kaho ya rahim kaho
tum krishn kaho ya kareem kaho
ram kaho ya rahim kaho

Blog Day :

4320 Post No. : 15606 Movie Count :

I am reminded of Halley’s comet when I started writing this post. Relevance and context. . .?

Well, as they say…. samajhne waale samajh gaye hain

Anyway, coming to this unique post, all I can say is that I was surprised when I was asked to go ahead with the song by none other than Sudhir ji. There is some email interaction happening between self, Atul ji and Sudhir ji on another topic.  In this interchange of emails and out of the blue, I was suggested to take up today’s “song”.

This song is from a film that never got completed. The film was shelved and the ‘song’ technically is from an unreleased film.

I am a huge admirer and follower of the rules of this blog such as.

  1. Only Hindi film and non-film songs are represented.
  2. Every song is represented only once, no matter how important or popular it is.
  3. Lyrics are a must in each post for the song represented.
  4. Multiple-version songs from the same film are considered as one.
    Etc.

Of course, there are some exceptions, such as room for songs rendered in English in our Hindi films etc. “Wish Me Luck” from ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970), “My Heart Is Beating” from ‘Julie’ (1975) etc. being such examples. But then, I understand, deviations do require some permission and go-ahead from the bosses. 🙂

Well, how about a shelved and incomplete film.? Yes, we do have many such representations also. So, what’s unique about today’s song? Ok, the interesting thing about today’s song is that it is

  1. From an unreleased/incomplete/shelved film
  2. Recording of the song is not available
  3. The singer has sung the song in a concert

With this background, I bring forth a song sung in a concert by Mukesh from the film ‘Chalaak’ (some sources attribute the making year to 1966) which never saw the light of the day. Not much information is available about this film on the web, but I happened to find a very interesting and detailed article of this film authored by one Mr Karan Bali, and posted on the blog named ‘Upper Stall’. Here is the link to the full article – https://upperstall.com/features/incomplete-films-chalaak/.

Since the story behind the incomplete film is important, I am copy pasting the relevant paras from the same article. Readers are requested to read his detailed article from the link above as it also has some rare photographs taken during the shooting of this incomplete film. The sad tale of this film is linked with the equally sad life story of Madhubala, who was the heroine in this film.

Sometime around 1964, once she felt a little better, Madhubala decided to make a comeback and finish her work on yet another film that was stalled for quite some time, called Chalaak, where she was cast opposite Raj Kapoor. The film was being produced and directed by JK Nanda, who had directed singing star KL Saigal’s last film Parwana (1947), besides having worked with Madhubala earlier in films like Singaar (1949) and Dhake Ki Malmal (1956). The film also starred Agha, Om Prakash and Jeevan, while the music for the film was being scored by Raj Kapoor regulars Shankar-Jaikishan. According to the July 15, 1960 issue of Screen, some ten reels were in the can by then. Some more filming took place before Madhubala’s ailment again brought the film to a halt. It is said that she collapsed on the sets and was advised strict bed rest thereafter. Still determined to finish it, sometime around 1966, Madhubala again made a valiant attempt to complete the film. Stills of her from the film show just how ill she was, her still-beautiful face looking shrunken and heavily made up, a deep sadness in those famous twinkling eyes.

However, the physical effort to complete Chalaak proved too much for the actress. The film shut down shop for good. It was all the more tragic as it is said that Chalaak had just a few more filming days left. And in less than 3 years after its shelving, the Venus of the Indian screen left this world on February 23, 1969, when just 36. . .

While no records of the film’s music came out, Mukesh did sing a song from the film at some of his concerts. At one such function in the 1960s, he declared the film had not released but would soon be seen in the theatres. As we know that never happened. . .

The film never got released, however one solitary recording of Mukesh singing this song at a concert in Mombasa (Kenya) is thankfully available. I was aware of this song and had also heard it a few times on the net. But, for the reasons mentioned above regarding the rules of the blog, I was under the impression that I may not be entertained for posting it on the blog. However, when I was offered to represent this concert song, I grabbed it with both the hands. I thank Atul ji and Sudhir ji for giving me an opportunity to represent this unique song on the blog.

In connection with the writing of this post, I was also in touch with Shri Harish ji of Surat who as usual was quite prompt in his help and replies. I thank him for the help rendered.

I do not want to promise but can assure readers that the comet will appear soon again. 🙂

A sad event that did not seem to gather much attention, occurred on Tuesday, 29th December, 2015. Legendary singer Subir Sen breathed his last in Calcutta (Kolkata). He was 81-years-old. The lovers of film music will remember him for his renditions in many Hindi and Bangla films.

‘आ’
“आप से दिल ही मांगा था जान तो नहीं”

Searching through the obscure and the unheard, we continue to encounter such fabulous creations that bring a gasp of pleasant surprise. Today, in the second installment of this new series of songs by Rafi Sb, I bring this exuberant song of ‘chhed chhaad’ from an unreleased film from the 1960s. The film is ‘Jaan Bachi Laakhon Paaye’. We have one song from this film already posted a little over one year ago – “Teri Zulf Mein Chun Ke Champa Ki Kaliyan”, another delightful creation, in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor and Sharda.

Dev Saab – the phenomena continues.  With coming newer generation, it may fade away.  But there is still many more generations to go before that can happen.

Remembering Dev Saab on the anniversary of his birth today – 26th September.  He would have been 92 years young today.  And I am sure, he is, wherever he maybe now.

Today (17 octobr 2014) is the birth anniversary of Simi Garewal (DoB 17 october 1947). If there is one person who can be described to be an ageless wonder then it has to be her. She has not changed much in appearance for over 50 years right from the time she made her debut in Hindi movies in 1962.

(1970s Unreleased – Duet)

Quite a coincidence today. This duet that I selected for this episode of the series, got inadvertently connected with an anniversary .

An amazing creation, this duet is. Film is ‘Sweetheart’, also from the early 1970s. The creators of this song are more familiar. The words are penned by Anand Bakshi and the music is created by Kalyanji Anandji. This film was launched with quite a filmi buzz, with the lead pair of Shashi Kapoor and Asha Parekh. I have some memory of reading something – maybe a promotional article, likely in the Filmfare magazine, way back then. Eventually, this film did not get done. The songs did get recorded. As per Geet Kosh, four songs are identified and probably more may exist. The list of songs is impressive, especially this duet and a solo by Mukesh (yet to be posted here). I remember these songs were played occasionally on the radio. It never did strike me that this film did not get released. As I checked the listings while preparing this series, I was a bit surprised to see this name in the list of unreleased films.

There are hundreds of gems of hindi film songs which I have not heard yet. I am talking about only the songs of Mohammad Rafi sahab here. It is obvious nobody can claim to have heard all the songs which include scores of wonderful songs of the golden era.

Remembering RD Burman on his 74th birth anniversary today.

RD Burman, the prince of the music composers in the 1970s and 80s, his music is considered to be the most significant factor behind the exceptional success of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar in those decades. Starting his career with ‘Chhote Nawaab’ (1961), he has no other film to his credit as a music director till 1965, when he scored the music for ‘Bhoot Bangla’ and ‘Teesra Kaun’. But the phenomenal launch to his career would be in 1966, when he scored the songs for Nasir Hussain’s ‘Teesri Manzil’ – there was no looking back after that. If we take 1965 as the true starting point in his career, then from that year to 1994, when he passed away, he had scored music for more than 330 films. In an active career of three decades, that makes for an average of more than 10 films in a year, which is an extraordinary pace for a single person.
