Today, 18th July, is the fourth remembrance day of the renowned singer, Mubarak Begum. In 2016, she had passed away in Bombay, at the age of 80, after a protracted illness.

A very unique voice that stands apart from all her contemporary singers, her repertoire of songs rendered reads like a list of favorites all the way through. Our dear friend Girdharilal ji of Jodhpur has painstakingly compiled a near exhaustive list of her songs in films. This includes songs in Hindi films, unreleased films, regional language films and also three films from Pakistan. The total number of films across all categories for which she has sung, is close to 135, and the total number of songs is close to 215. There is also a very small number of known non-film songs also that she has rendered.

She started her singing career in Hindi films in 1949, with the film ‘Aaiye’, in which she sang “Mujhe Aane Lagi Angdaai Re” under the music direction of Shaukat Haidri, also known as Nashaad later in his career. The list of films indicates that she was actively singing in films till as late As early to mid 1980s, a career that well stretched across three decades. The number of 215 may not sound very impressive given the duration of active years in the industry, but as mentioned earlier, the list is near stocked with favorite songs one after the other. An impressive portfolio, given that she – by her own admission, and as written by other observers about her – was not at all skilled at networking and self promotion in the industry.

Mubarak Begum had come to Delhi for a live program in October 2012. Our dear friend AK ji (of Songs of Yore) and myself got the opportunity for a personal meeting with her. One thing that she mentioned with stress was that it happened many times with her, that a recording was done, and then it was never used, or the song got re-recorded in another voice, without any information to her. She said that she lost many an opportunity this way, for her songs being published on gramophone records. Not many may know this, but she had recorded a song for ‘Mughal e Azam’ (1960) under the baton of Naushad Sb – a trio song in which she accompanied Lata Mangeshkar and Shamshad Begum. That song was later scrapped from the film.

Today, I present this very lesser known song from an obscure film from 1972 – ‘Naarad Leela’. As the name may indicate, this a mythological film produced under the banner of Neena Films, Bombay and is directed by Dhirubahi Desai. The cast of actors listed for this film are Shahu Modak, Sushma, BM Vyas, Indira Billi, SN Tripathi, Madhumati, Jeevan, Himmat Singh Chauhan, Lata Arora, Madhuri, AK Tiwari, Shri Bhagwan, Anjali Devi, Pal Sharma, Uma Khosla, Moolraj Rajda, Lakkiram, Om Prakash, Digvijay Narayan, Asit Sen, Tuntun, Yashodhara Katju, Parbha Desai, and Satyajeet. The songs of this film are penned by Madan and he music is given by Narayan Dutt.

On screen, this song is performed by Tuntun (originally Uma Devi), as she tries to woo and entice a bearded ascetic. Given the beard, I am not able to put name to this face in the video clip. I request other knowledgeable readers to please help identify this actor. And also add more information about the film.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by our dear Prakash ji.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 17

Yes, we grew up with and learned all about the heart, and the smiles and love, listening to your songs. . . how we wish there were more. . .

– – – –

Scraped through with some difficulty for today’s episode – not many songs, and duet at that, beginning with this letter ‘थ’.

Today’s song is from a lesser known film from 1957 – ‘Laxmi Pooja’.  The film is produced and directed by Jayant Desai for Hemlata Pictures, Bombay. The list of actors of this film reads like – Nirupa Roy, Shahu Modak, Jeevan, Niranjan Sharma, Anant Kumar, Babu Raje, Praveen Pal, Indira, Manju, Shri Bhagwan, Sukumar, Rajrani, and Meenu Mumtaz etc.

The nine songs of this film are all written by Bharat Vyas, and the music is composed by Chitragupt. Quite a melodious song, this offering is. The singing voices are those of Shamshad Begum and Rafi Sb.

Apparently the lady’s beau has a stronger attachment to religious pursuits, much to the dismay of the lady. And she is trying to win him over with her winsome expressions about youth being wasted. And the gentleman replies – it is not just youth, but the entire life that is getting wasted, so let us sing the praises of the Good Lord. The lady is not giving up her rightful claim and she too presses on with her efforts to snare him with the promises of love. Our man, appears to be made of sterner stuff – and absolutely does not give up by the time 3rd antaraa starts to play (somewhat breaking the rule we have always found useful in such song situations).

There is another song of a similar theme – from the 1975 film ‘Sanyaasi’ – “Chal Sanyasi Mandir Mein“. It would be interesting to compare notes and lyrics. . . 🙂

Listen and enjoy.

Song – Thodi Si Zindgani Raja Beete Na Jawaani  (Lakshmi Pooja) (1957) Singer – Shamshad Begum, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Bharat Vyas, MD – Chitragupt
