# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Memories of Binaca Geetmala)
——————————————-———————————————

Today’s song is from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Ponga Pandit’. I have not watched this movie yet, but I vaguely recall this name from my childhood days. I was aware of a couple of songs from this movie. Songs of this movie were played frequently on ‘loud-speakers’. This movie, I think was not a ‘successful movie’ in terms of collections.

I also remember that the word ‘Ponga Pandit’ was used for the ‘ready to eat fingers’ which were sold door to door in those days. We use to buy it from the sweet vendor near our school premises in the recess period. ‘Ponga Pandit’ was also used to tease ‘some pandits’ and also someone bulky or very lazy (if I am not wrong 🙂 ).

‘1975’ is an important year or rather a milestone year in the History of Hindi Cinema. It is mostly identified with the two blockbuster movies ‘Sholay’ and ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ that were released in that year. In addition, many other important movies too were released during this year. These are movies like ‘Aandhi’, ‘Chhoti Si Baat’, ‘Chupke Chupke’, ‘Dharmaatmaa’, ‘Dhoti Lotaa Aur Chowpaty’, ‘Do Jaasoos’, ‘Geet Gaataa Chal’, ‘Julie’, ‘Khel Khel Mein’, ‘Pratigyaa’, ‘Prem Kahaani’, ‘Rafoo Chakkar’, ‘Raftaar’, ‘Sanyaasi’, ‘Warrant’, ‘Zakhmee’ and others. Socio Politically this was the year when ‘Emergency’ was declared in our country from 25.06.1975. This was in force till 21.03.1977.

Coming to ‘film and songs’ if we look at the most popular songs programme in those days i.e. ‘Binaca Geetmala’ the annual list had thirty-two songs. Songs from the movie ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974)’ were at number one and two and the song from ‘Julie’ was at number three.

Out of the thirty two songs featuring in this annual list nine songs were composed by the music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, five songs were composed by Rajesh Roshan, nine songs were composed by Rahul Dev Burman, two songs by Kalyanji-Anandji and Shankar-Jaikishan each, and one song each composed by Shyamal Mitra, Salil Chaudhary, Aziz Nazan, Bappi Lahiri, and Nitin-Mangesh. A few songs in this list were from movies that were released during the previous year 1974 (e.g. ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan’, ‘Roti’, ‘Bidaai’, ‘Kunwaara Baap’ etc).

There was one song from ‘Ponga Pandit’ in this list which appeared at number twenty in this list. Today we are going to listen to this song.

“Ponga Pandit-1975” was directed by Prayag Raaj for ‘Amar Chhaaya, Bombay’. It was produced by Surinder Kapoor. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.07.1975. “Ponga Pandit” was dedicated to the memory of actress Geeta Bali. The titles of this movie mentioned that some of the outdoor locations in this movie are Hardwar, Tehri and Pauri (Garhwal), and Virbhadra where this movie was shot.

‘Ponga Pandit’ had Randhir Kapoor, Neeta Mehta (Debut movie), Danny Denzongpa, Prema Narayan, Nirupa Roy, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Madan Puri, Pinchoo Kapoor, Sulochana Chatterjee, Arpana Chowdhary, Sunder, S.N. Tripathi, and Ranjeet. They were supported by Rajen Kapoor, Hari Kapoor, Moolchand, Shreeram Shastri, Indu Mehta, Sonu Arora, Shaifali, Sabeena, Ranbir Raj, Mansaram, Sunil Dhawan, Rattan Gaurang, Sadiq Irani, Harinder Kapoor, Neema Roy, Shakti Raj, Sameena, Sheikh, Rahul Raaj and Master Salim.

Prayag Raj who directed this movie also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie.
Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajinder Krishan who was also the lyricist for the songs in this movie. And Editing of this movie was done by Kamalakar. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This movie has six songs written by Rajinder Krishan. These songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, and Usha Mangeshkar.

Here is a brief about this movie taken from the ‘YouTube’ video of the today’s song. (I have added the actors’ names to their respective character name in the movie).

Haridwar-based Neelkanth Pandey (Pinchoo Kapoor) and Shambhu Nath (Madan Puri) get their children, Bhagwati Prasad (Randhir Kapoor as grown up Bhagwati) and Parvati (Neeta Mehta as grown up Parvati) respectively, married. While Shambhu re-locates to live in Bombay, Neelkanth continues to reside in the same residence. Years later, both children have grown up, so Neelkanth invites the Naths to finalize the nuptials. Very soon the Pandeys will face humiliation and ridicule at the hands of Parvati, who now calls herself Pamela, and Shambhu, who wants his daughter to marry someone sophisticated and wealthy, while Parvati is in love with a singer named Rocky(Danny Dengzongpa). Bhagwati is determined to fulfil his parents’ wishes and decides to stay wed to Parvati, re-locates to Bombay, to try and woo her back – with results that will end up changing his life forever.

I am not going in to any further details of this movie. An interesting review (called as ‘mini-review’ 🙂 of this movie is available on ‘memsaab story’ where in our respected editor and few members of the blog have also commented in the past on this article. Interested readers can read this to get an idea about the plot and presentation of this movie.

“Ponga Pandit-1975” was the debut movie of actress Neeta Mehta who subsequently worked in many movies of the seventies & eighties, and one day left the glamorous world of films to become a ‘spiritual guru- Swami Nityanand Giri’. Before that she also ventured into the business of ‘jewelry’.

Neeta Mehta was born in 1956 in a well –educated family in Gujarat, her father being a Barrister and her mother being a Doctor. Neeta Mehta also had a brother. She did her school studies in Bombay. But Neeta was not interested in academics so she left studies and took admission in FTII, Pune. Her parents and other family members were not in favor of her joining films or the world of modeling and acting. However Neeta Mehta went against her family to join films. She worked in around forty films in the late seventies and eighties. Some of her known movies are ‘Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki’, ‘Shaayad’, ‘Nazraana Pyaar Ka’, ‘Hero (1983)’, ‘Naari’, ‘Dhanwaan (1981)’, ‘Ham Se Badhhkar Kaun’, ‘Kaamchor’, ‘Rishta Kaagaz Ka’, ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’, ‘Jeene Nahin Doonga’, ‘Swarg Se Sunder’, etc. It is said that she had an affair with Sanjeev Kumar (also a Gujarati) with whom she worked in movies like ‘Yahi Hai Zindagi’, ‘Jaani Dushman (1979)’, ‘Pathhar Se Takkar’ and ‘Hero’. However due some differences their relationship could not convert into marriage and it is said that Sanjeev Kumar want her to leave films after their marriage which she was against off, as she had gone against her family earlier only to join films. Sources mentioned that in the late eighties when she was not getting prominent roles in the movies she left films to start a business of ‘jewelry’ in Bombay which also included export business. Later in 1995 she had this ‘spiritual awakening’ when she realized that her goal was something different. Her family had been a devotee of spiritual guru Maa Anandmayee (Nirmala Sundari 30.04.1896-27.08.1982). It took Neeta Mehta around thirty-forty years to become a ‘saadhvi’ and she had mentioned in her ‘YouTube’ channel that she was always attached to Maa Anandmayee and had been a keen follower of her.

Neeta Mehta, now Swami Nityanand Giri has authored a book on Maa Anandmayee (In Love with the divine Mother – Shree Shree Maa Anandmayee, 2020) where she had shared her personal experience about her guru, with some miraculous incidents and also with the rare pictures of Maa Anandmayee. Neeta Mehta has disconnected with her past in Hindi films and doesn’t like to be referred by her name i.e. Neeta Mehta now. She has sacrificed all worldly desires and embraced the spirituality and social work now.

In today’s song we have Randhir Kapoor, Neeta Mehta and Prema Narayan performing a ‘jeeja-saali and her didi’ act. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar. Lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

With today’s song this movie ‘Pongaa Pandit-1975’ makes its debut on the blog.
