‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 7
———————————————————
When I started as a ‘new contributor’ to this blog I had shared a Kishore Kumar song from the movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ to Atul ji.
I was in fact not aware of this song before that, and it was my boss then, who, noticing my interest in music, had asked me about the link of the song.
He in turn was asked by one of his friends who was looking for this song. Both were aware of few lines of this song and about the singer only, and nothing more – like about the movie’s name etc. I was successful in locating this song. Later I also shared it to the blog. This song was posted on the blog on October 03, 2012.
The movie ‘Paanch Dushman-1973’ itself was an ‘obscure movie’ for me. However, our inhouse encyclopaedia Shri. Arunkumar ji, in his comment on this post, had mentioned in detail about this movie which I am reproducing here below.
October 03, 2012
Atul ji,
PAANCH DUSHMAN-1973 was a film made under the banner of M.G.O. Films, Bombay. It was produced by Manu Narang but Directed by Bimal Rawal. The music of R.D. Burman had lyrics from Majrooh. There were 6 songs,3 solos and 3 duets. Solos were by KK-2 and Rafi-1,Duets of Asha/KK-2 and Lata/KK-1.The other songs are better than the above song.
The cast was Lead pair of MANU NARANG and RAJEE,both were first timers.Manu Narang was the son of S.D.Narang, the famous Producer/Director, who himself was a dashing Hero in the 40s.Films like KHAZANCHI-1941 were big hits-not because of Narang, but because of superb Debut by SHAMSHAD Begum in Hindi films. She had sung ALL 9 song-Solos-in the Debut film and created a sort of record, unbroken till today.
Manu Narang was one time the famed Playboy of the 50s and 60s and was in the news for all wrong reasons. There are umpteen stories of him and his Rang reliayan…………
No one can predict why a Hindi film succeeds. This film PAANCH DUSHMAN had the essential ingredients of a successful Masala film. It had a good looking youthful new lead pair, one of the best Music Directors, Best singers, very good story line,5 Villains (Pran, Shatrughna, Manmohan, Vinod khanna and Prem Chopda),
6 comedians (Mehmood, Mukri, Mohan choti, Agha, Sunder and Bramhachary),2 Cabaret dancers (Aruna Irani and Helen) an eternal weeping Maa-Baap (Durga Khote and Nazir Hussain), but HARD LUCK! This murder mystery did not succeed…..
This period in Hindi films was of stories of Smugglers, desh ke Dushman etc. Accordingly, the storyline went like…
Sunil (Manu Narang) is accused of murdering his own brother Raju and a Prostitute. He and his lover Reeta (Rajee) learn that the real motive of the murder was Diamonds. So, to tap the real murderer, Sunil poses as a Dimond merchant cum a Prince. The 5 villains are lured who go after the best Diamonds that he has. Finally, with the help of his friends, lover and a helping Police Inspector (Jagdish Raj), the real culprit is captured.
Despite dances, drama and mystery, fight and little weeping by Hero’s crippled parents, the public showed its back to the film and very quickly, the film went in hiding.

In later years this movie was re-released in ‘1987’ with the title as ‘Daulat Ke Dushman. Though its music was created by none other than our beloved Pancham Da, this movie remained a not-so familiar movie for me.
“Paanch Dushman’ (alias ‘Daulat Ke Dushman) was directed by Bimal Rawal. It was produced by Manu Narang. It had Manu, Rajee, Aruna Irani, Sunder, Mukri, Mohan Choti, Durga Khote, Nassir Hussain, Sujata, Yograj, Jagdish Raj, Brahmachari, Agha, Helen, and Mehmood.
Story, screenplay, and dialogues of this movie were written by Dr Balkishan Mauj.
Editing of this movie was done by H.B. Pathare.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.01.1973. (This movie will turn ‘fifty’ next year 😊)
Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, and Asha Bhonsle, and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
This movie had seven songs (six plus one added later) written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R.D. Burman.

(Note: – The ‘Addenda’ of HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that ‘this movie was later released in 1987 with the title ‘Paanch Dushman’ ‘alias’ ‘Daulat Ke Dushman’, with this additional song ‘Sonaa chaandi jhoothhi daulat, sachchi daulat pyaar … sung by Manna Dey.)
(*appears as first song in the movie in the background of titles)
In 2015 I got my first copy of HFGK i.e., HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) but I had never gone through other songs of this movie since then. Also, they were not available then. Now songs of this movie are uploaded by music lovers and we can now listen to all songs of this movie.
Recently while browsing through the blog, I noticed that only one song of this movie was posted in 2012. Soon this movie will be completing its ‘ten years’ run on the blog without adding the second song. So, I checked and found today’s song which is sung by Rafi Saab. This is the only song sung by him in this movie and that fits the bill for my series of ‘Pancham-Rafi Songs’ where I have discussed songs where Rafi Saab had sung only one song in the movie where music was composed by R.D. Burman.
When I listened to today’s song for this post and listened to its’ link with dialogues, I immediately identified the voice of Mehmood. So, yes! this is a song of Rafi Saab sung for Mehmood.
Let us now enjoy today’s song in Rafi Saab’s voice singing for Mehmood. The song is picturised on Mehmood and Aruna Irani.
Here is this entertaining song …

“Gunaahon Ka Devta”(1967) was directed by Devi Sharma for Janta Chitra, Bombay. This “social” movie had Rajshree, Jeetendra, Mehmood, Leela Chitnis, Auna Irani, Randheer, Tuntun, Farida, Shahid, S K Prem, Sujata, Jeewan, Jankidas etc in it.
The movie had seven songs in it. Five songs have been covered so far.
Here is the sixth song from “Gunaahon Ka Devta”(1967) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Rafi and Manna Dey. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
The song is as a “diversion” song on Mehmood and another person (whom I am unable to identify) who gate crash on Jeewan’s wedding reception in Hindi filmy style without being subjected to any checks on their credentials. They are accompanied by two female dancers whom I cannot identify.
I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors seen in the picturisation.

Hullo Atuldom
Today’s song is sure to get a “How Come?” reaction from all concerned, even Atulji and Sudhirji will probably include it in the category of “How come this song was not posted earlier?” and “How did I forget to post this song earlier?”. Also I know we have fans of today’s song among the followers of the blog who will say “How did we miss it in all these 12 years of the blog?” I, who regularly try and send a song for the birthday and anniversary of the main actor in this song, also kept putting it off for God Knows what occasion!!!
But better late than never. And here is an all-time popular song.
There are hundreds of multi-version songs in filmdom. Usually we will have the same song sung as happy and sad, male- female, family reunion versions etc. Today’s is a hatke (different) multi-version song. It cannot be categorized as Happy-Sad or Male -female versions. In both versions of this song all the characters involved lip-sync. There are two couples, hence four singers. And finally, the mood of the songs are “roothna-manaana” and/or “teasing song”. I won’t call it eve-teasing as one song has the girls teasing the guys. There is equality here. 😉
The first version (in the movie) happens when the boys -Chuttan and Puttan land up accidentally in the house of Shaila (Aruna Irani) and she walks in, with her friend Poonam (Anjana -she was not yet Anjaana Mumtaz then). The girls have the upper hand in this version as they threaten the boys of handing them over to her father (Jeevan) or Poonam’s inspector brother (Chandrashekar). The song closes with the girls tying up the boys.
The second one is in Mahabaleswar where the boys are in hiding from their strict father (Ashok Kumar). I must mention here that I was reminded of this movie because of Guruji’s recent post where he mentioned the actress who played the mother character to Chuttan (Mehmood) and Puttan (Vinod Mehra). This movie “Do Phool” was a 1973 release which was directed by S. Ramanathan, a remake of the Tamil “Anubavi Raja Anubavi”. The movie had four songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which were set to music by R D Burman. Only one song from this movie Muthukodi kawaadi hadaa is present on the blog, posted way back in 2009.
Here is the next one today, which also happens to be Mehmood’s 16th anniversary. It is in the vocals of Asha, Usha, Kishore and Mehmood.

Blog Day : | 3805 | Post No. : | 14800 |
There was a time when Blog century used to be so common that there used to be as many as two such occasions every month. How times have changed. Now we have one blog century in two months !
Song post number 14600 was covered on August 2018. Next song post number 14700 was covered on 17 october 2018. Now more than two months (62 days) later, at a strike rate of less than two songs a day, now we reach song post number 14800 !
I am not able to specifically pinpoint the reasons for this slow progress. There may be several reasons. One reason could be that I have become “busy”. I would summarily reject this reason. I am not busy any more than what I was during 2011 and 2012 when the blog saw centuries every 16 days. I still recall some music lovers complaining that theere were far too many song notifications every day spamming the inboxes of the subscribers. 🙂 And curiously enough, I used to think that the number of songs being posted those days was rather low. 🙂
One reason for slow progress these days coould be because we have become rather conscious of “records”, unlike the case in the past. During 2011 and 2012, we were not conscious about YIPPEE movies, debutant movies, count of songs in the movie etc. Yhose were simple days when we just covered songs as they occured to us, with far less planning. Today, considerable time is taken up in deciding which song to cover. Since so many thousands of songs have already been covered, searching for songs to cover also takes time now a days. So many songs from yesteryears have been covered that every new song that we discuss from those years appears like a gold dust to me. Unlike in the past, we rarely discuss songs composed by Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, O P Nayyar, S D Burman etc mainly because bulk of the songs of these composers have already been covered and we are now scraping the bottom of the barrel, as far as remaining songs of these composers are concerned.
Same is the case for singers like say Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Suraiyya etc. Bulk of songs sung by them have already been covered. In case of K l Saigal and Suraiyya, we have covered each and every song that is available.
During the early days of the year 2018, our new year resolution of covering one debutant song and ne YIPPEE song daily was adhered to with great discipline for the first four months before this resolution had to be abandoned.
Though we in the blog seem less prolific this days, but that is more than compensated by the research work related to HFM that goes on in the background. The well researched articles full of difficult to find information that our inhouse researchers, Mr Arunkumar Deshmuh and Mr Sadanand Kamath regularly come up with have added considerably to our knowledge of forgotten artists and movies of the past. Mr Sudhir Kapur has been digging up forgotten movies of 1960s, some of them so obscure that no details were known about them till they were discussed here. So, we many have slowed down in number of posts, but the quality of posts by our inhouse research scholars remains as high as ever.
Peevesie’s mom, despite being busy, heroically comes up with articles on the occasion of anniversaries of artists and also blog regulars. Regulars like Prakashchandra, Avinash Scrapwala, Mahesh Mamadapur etc silently keep adding value to the blog. So we continue to forge ahead, even if at a slow pace than before
Whenever we discuss a blog century song, we try to combine it with some other special occasion. This blog century post number 13800 is no different. We combine this article with the blog century of an artist. With this song, lyricist Yogesh completes one hundred songs in the blog.
I have gone through the filmography of Yogesh. Here I present the full filmography of Yogesh. This should serve as a ready reference as far as the HFM career of Yogesh is concerned.
I request reders to point out errors/ omissions in the filmography so that it can be made better and more compelete.

Coming to the song under discussioon, the song is from “Mazaaq”(1975). This by now forgotten movie was directed by Kumar for Indira Films Bombay. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Mausami Chatterji, Aruna Irani, Ifthikhar, Mehmood, Mridula, Bhagwan, Kanhaiyyalal, Agha, Keshto Mukherji, Mukri, Ridku, Shakeel, Ratan Gaurang, Gopal Mukherji, Samar Roy, V Gopal, Viju Khote, Asrani etc in it. The movie had guest appearances by Shubha Khote, Ravi Ghosh, Paintal, and special appearances by Basu Chatterji and S Ramnathan.
This movie had only two songs in it. First song is covered in the past.
Here is the second and final song from “Mazaaq”(1975) to appear in the blog. The song is a two part song. Part one is sung by Mohammed Rafi and it is lip synced by Vinod Mehra. Part II is a duet which is sung by Mohammed Rafi and Mehmood. It is picturised on Vinod Mehra and Mehmood. The song can be described as the title song as well as “advice” song.
Yogesh is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.
I vaguely remember having heard this song and then I forgot all about this song. It was only while searching for this song and playing it that I realised that I had last heard this song more than four decades ago ! Needless to state that I had no clue about the details of this song.
In a way, this forgotten gem of a song is a song fit to be covered as a special song in the blog.
With this song, the blog ticks one more landmark. Let us hope that this musical bandwagon, whicgh is moving at a slow pace will soon gain some momentum and will hopefully pick up the speed of train 18, if not bullet train. 🙂
I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose continued support and well wishes are the fuel on which this music bandwagon feeds.

Part I
—————-
paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal jee ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
arre sun ae mere dil
duniya ka ye mela
hoon phir bhi main akela
aandhi mein jaise chiraag
kaisi hai ye uljhan
ke suljhaaye jitna man
utna hi uljhe dimaag
kaabil to bhookha mare
paagal jo chaahe kare
kaisa hai mazaak
paagal zamaane mein
is pagal khaane mein
sabse tu pagal jee ban ke to mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
arre sun ae mere dil
jal mein dhobi pyaasa
jab dekha ye tamaasha
tab jaa ke samjha main baat
jab tak khud na chaahen
nahin dhoonden khud hum raahen
dega nahin koi saath
matlab ka hai ye jahaan
inan hai aise yahaan
bolen din ko raat
paagal zamaane mein
is pagal khane me
sabse tu pagal jee ban ke to mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
are sun ae mere dil

Part II

samajh hai moti teri
jab ungli hogi tedhi
tab hi to niklega ghi
thheek hai
thheek hai
kya kehne hain tere
arre yaar kasam se mere
sach baat toone kahi
ham tum kya pade pade
takte hain khade khade
kar ke dillagi
arre paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal hi ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
arre sun ae mere dil
oo oo
hahahaha
bol
bol apna thhobda khol
bol
ooohahahaha
maare kaun sa jaadu
jo bankar ghoome baabu
gadbad ghotala hain kya
gadbad ghotala hai kya
gadbad ghotala hain kya
gadbad ghotala
gadbad gadbad gadbad
gadbabd
gadbad ghotala hain kya
arey fark raha kya tujh mein
aur fark raha kya mujh mein
tujhko agar doon bata
yaaron se nahin chhupa
kha pi ke maze uda
toone sach kaha
aa toone sach kaha
paagal zamaane mein
is paagal khaane mein
sabse tu paagal hi ban ke mil
paagal ke liye hai maaf
kuchh bhi wo kare mazaak
sun ae mere dil
arre sun ae mere dil

Hullo to all of Atuldom
Today, 29th September happens to be the 84th birth anniversary of Mehmood Ali commonly known as Mehmood. In a career spanning four decades he acted in around 300 films. I am not sure how many songs in these 300 films where picturised on him and how many Mehmood songs our blog has! We don’t have a separate category of songs on Mehmood, like we have for Johnny Walker. The songs of these two actors were always very special. But I am sure there will be enough songs to take us through a life time if we stick to posting one song on his birth anniversary and one on the anniversary of his passing away. Of course there is nobody to stop us from breaking this rule and sneaking in a few extras, right?
[Editor Note: Request is noted for a category of Mehmood songs. 🙂 ]
