We can observe that four movies (out of seven) have already been YIPPEED in the blog. In fact, three movies were YIPPEED on the blog on that very day (29 november 2012).

That leaves us with three movies that are technically eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (29 november 2022).

“Daaku”(1955) is one BTYC eligible movie today.

“Daaku”(1955) was directed by Aspi Irani for Basant Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Shashikala, Kuldip Kaur, Anwar Hussain, Maya Das, Babu Raaje, Sheikh, Naagpal, Michael, Habib, Gulnar, Wazir Muhammad Khan, Azurie, Iqbal, Adib etc. Sulochana was also there in a guest appearance.

“Daaku”(1955) had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered so far.

Here is the fifth song from “Daaku”(1955) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha BHonsle. Manoharlal Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by Snhal Bhatkar.

Theb song is picturised as a stage dance song of sorts on Shashikala and Shammi Kapoor who seem to be playin Indian version of gypsies. One can watch Kuldeep Kaur among the audience who seems to be disturbed at the sight of the dancing duo on stage.

Lyrics of the song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

21/10/2020 – 89th Birth anniversary of Shammi Kapoor
————————————————————————

I have in possession for almost a year now, a book titled “Rafinaama” by Isaak Mujawar. One day I just impulsively looked up the book availability on Amazon, and found that only two copies were available. I just ordered it without thinking anything. When the book arrived, then I realized that it was in Marathi. Even for self-proclaimed “kitaabi keeda” like me, sitting down reading it has proven a challenge. Which, I am yet to seriously take up.

Two days ago, I suddenly occurred to me, I am having these books and I should make use of the articles there for writing the various posts. The first book I encountered, for sheer visibility and the size of it, is “eh un dinon ki baat hai” – Urdu Memoirs of Cinema Legends (selected and translated by Yasir Abbasi). So for two days, I have been going through that book.

Since this Shammi Kapoor post is due to be written, I had finalized the song and lyrics are also ready. But the book does not contain anything about Shammi Kapoor and his career. I found “Rafinaama” next, in the drawer that I have kept for such treasures 🙂 never to be seen and touched by anyone.

And lo and behold, I have selected a Rafi song from the film Laila Majnu(1953) for posting on the 89th birth anniversary of Shammi Kapoor and Rafinaama starts with the chapter titiled “Shammi, Rishicha majnucha aawaaj” meaning “majnu’s voice for Shammi and Rishi”.

I am giving a brief roundup of the chapter here :

“Films on Laila Majnu title have been made in hindi film industry in 1922, 1931(2 Movies), 1945, 1953 and 1976. The “Laila Majnu” of 1922 was silent movie and the rest were talkies. Two more movies on the same characters story was differently titled, first “Daastaan-e-Laila Majnu” in 1973 and “Love and God” in 1986. Rafi Sahab’s songs were there in all these movies since 1945. In the 1945 version Rafi sahab has sung two songs but none were actually on Majnu’s character.”

The above chapter in the book says that Rafi’s voice was Majnu’s voice in 1953 film, which is incorrect. Among the 4 songs which Rafi Sahab sang for this three are already posted in the blog. In “Bhar de jholi Allah naam” Rafi sahab’s has sung in 3-4 different voices for different characters, but when Shammi Kapoor comes in line and sings, it’s Talat Mehmood’s voice for him. In the song “Aankhon mein hai tu”, Shammi Kapoor in watching the qawwali being performed, he is not singing at all. Third posted is “Mil gayaa taqdeer se chashmaa yehaan”is a solo Rafi song played in the background during the titles.

The songs posted are listed below:

Song Date posted Remarks
Ae sanam ye zindagi aayi hai lekar khushi 18 December 2010
Aasmaan waale teri duniyaa se jee ghabraa gayaa 28 May 2011
Chal diyaa kaarwaan lut gaye ham yahaan 7 June 2011
Aankhon mein hai tu 3 July 2011
Yaad teri zindagi ka saaz ban kar reh gayi 23 July 2011
Bahaaron ki duniya pukaare tu aa jaa 9 April 2012 MD-Sardar Malik
Ya ilaahi ho mubaarak tujhko ye tera jahaan 10 april 2012
Dekh lee ae ishq teri 24 May 2012 MD-Sardar Malik
Bhar de jholi Allah naam 14 February 2013
Mere sarkaar tere ishq ki duniya ko salaam 25 March 2013
Mil gaya taqdeer se chashmaa yahaan 6 March 2017

The fourth Rafi song from this film is the song of the current post. It is a very short and rapid solo which is played in the background as Laila and Majnu, Shammi Kapoor and Nutan, both die lying in the desert and the sand covers them gradually. This must be the end of the film. So the film is starting and ending with a Rafi song background song. Composer is Ghulam Mohammad and lyrics are by Shakeel Badayuni.

This is 12th song to be posted from this film. One more song which is listed/included in the list of this films’ songs is actually not from this film, but this song posted here from another Shammi Kapoor film Chor Bazar (1954), with Sardar Malik’s music. So that means this movie has 13 songs and only one song remains to Yippee this movie. Remaining song is also a special one with Shamshad Begum giving playback to Master Jadeep. (I will try and get this post shortly).

There are a few more chapters dealing with Shammi Kapoori majnu type songs style which were sung by Rafi sahab, and subsequent Shammi Kapoor clones who tried to adopt the same style. The author is of the opinion that the Shammi style of songs which became famous as “yahoo” style did not originate with Junglee and Shankar-Jaikishan, rather the origin can be found in the songs of film “Tum sa nahin dekha” by O. P. Nayyar.

Shammi Kapoor started his film career with 6 films in 1953. He was the son of Prithvi Raj Kapoor and brother of Raj Kapoor, who was well on his way to be a stalwart film maker by then. But Shammi Kapoor must have set out to make his career on his own, there was no official launching by R. K. Films. His filmography lists 146 films from 1953 – 2011. Rockstar 2011 being the last film in which he acted. Up to Andaz 1971, I counted 56 movies of his which include many memorable musical extravaganzas with Rafi sahab’s playback under Shankar-Jaikishan, O.P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman. Early 50’s when he started as a hero, I can see, that the favoured voice for the hero was not Rafi. Rafi was the voice of everyone else in the some films but not the hero. But Naushad Sahab had used Rafi for all songs on Dilip Kumar in ‘Aan” & “Deedar” and for Bharat Bhushan in “Baiju Bawra”. Or it is possible some of them felt insecure, that Rafi’s singing could over shadow them in popularity. Truly, his phenomenal singing was capable was running away with the credits for all the success of film and its music. Naushad was too big before even “Baiju Bawra”, so could maybe whither the onslaught. Other big personalities who were not so big in early 50’s could have felt insecure. We should be glad that, this type of misapprehensions, if existing, were unable to keep Rafi sahab down for long. If a star shines too bright then its neighbors can be forgiven for being apprehensive.

By any account there must be around 180 songs which Rafi sahab sang for Shammi Kapoor, beginning with “Shama Parwaana” with this unforgettable song. This is a definite Rafi-Shammi song with the definite nuances of “Majnu”’and traces of “wehshat zada ishq”, as the curtain behind which Surraiya is listening to the song, is burnt. Such is the effect of Rafi sahab and Shammi Kapoor’s singing. In this film, seen on TV long ago, Rafi sahab has 5 songs including 3 duets with Suraiyya. There is no other male singer here, so all songs sung by Shammi Kapoor were by Rafi sahab.

19/10/2020 – 64th Birthday of Sunny Deol
——————————————-
“Betaab” (1983) was produced by the Vijayta Films banner Dharmendra. This was the debut Hindi film of its lead actors, Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. Today is Sunny Deol’s birthday, real name Ajay Singh Deol, made his debut at the age of 27 years.

The word “Betaab” evokes the Lata Mangeshkar’s melodious song “ Betaab dil ki tamanna yahi hai” by Madan Mohan in the film “Hanste Zakhm”. For a change, this is one of the films which I have seen, when it was released. I wanted to see the songs of this film for some time now, Sunny Deol’s birthday gave me the excuse. I have seen some of them, looking for a song shot on location. Critically speaking, this is not among the better scores by R. D. Burman. This is very basic, run of the mill music score, none of the RDB versatility being in evidence. May be the 80’s monotony is catching up with me. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist.

The location of the major parts of this film is a valley in Pahalgam, Kashmir, below the road leading to the glacier. The valley is named “Betaab valley”, and all tourist vehicles stop there on the way to Amarnath cave. It is a beautiful location, with the river flowing next to it.

We visited Kashmir in May 2012. I can say that it is one place on earth where time has stood still. I found a multiple locations which were seen in so many films of 60-80’s, the same as seen in the movies. Movie makers favorite location was the Dal Lake. The area surrounding it was a lot different, from what was seen in movies like “Aarzoo”. But I could see many places at Gulmarg and Pahalgam same as it was seen in movies. Seeing the wooden shop fronts in Pahalgam town, I remembered seeing the scene is “Bobby”.

Actually, Pahalgam has much more pristine and beautiful locations and points off the beaten track also, like the area called “Mini Switzerland”. I know the technology is so much advanced, and many megapixel cameras are now available to mankind to capture the nature’s beauty. But it is a fact that the human eye’s capacity is 576 megapixel. As far as I can understand, there is no camera in the world which can click or record at 576 megapixel.

This is what Google says, going to such details on a simple search:
“We see in 576 megapixel definition when our eyes are moving, but a single glance would only be about 5-15 megapixels. What’s more, your eyes naturally have a lot of flaws that a camera or digital screen don’t. For example, you have a built-in blind spot where your optic nerve meets up with your retina.”

Fantastic ! or zabardast ! But the fact remains whatever the camera captures or the digital screen displays, are to be seen and read by human eye. Visual input to the brain is through the eyesight, the brain can read only what the eyes will transmit.

Where I am going with all this? No where. But I can’t say I appreciate the way Google tried to dodge my question:) .

tajalli hai teri ye chaand kyaa hai chaandni kyaa hai
agar nazren salaamat hain to jalwon ki kami kyaa hai

Shakeel Badayuni – Laila Majnu(1953)

But I should not count my chickens here, as artificial intelligence may be able to transmit the perfect digital picture to human mind also, for all I know.

Like I said, give me such outdoorsy songs anytime, I am presenting the Shabbir Kumar Solo from “Betaab” filmed completely on location of the said ‘Betaab Valley”. In the song, Sunny Deol has found a “tasveer” of his childhood sweetheart Amrita Singh, in a magazine. He makes a cut out of the photo and sings this song, at his farm house, where he is shown to be rearing horses, and chickens etc.

In the movie Sunny Deol kidnaps Amrita Singh from her father’s house and keeps her in the farm house (seen the song) in a bid to remind her of their childhood friendship and love.

Some more trivia about the film:

• Singer Sonu Nigam played the role of Sunny Deol’s character as a child in this film.
• This film was remade in Telugu as “Samrat” (1987) and in Kannada as “Karthik” (2011).
• This was Javed Akhtar’s first film as a solo screenwriter after Salim – Javed split.
• Singer Shabbir Kumar got his big break in Hindi films when R.D. Burman got him to sing for all the songs in this film.

The movie must be something special to be remade in Telegu and Kannada, a reversal from what usually happens. I will elaborate the bit about Shabbir Kumar is the trivia above. It was said that, all songs of the film were to be recorded by Kishore Kumar. But since Kishore Kumar was away at the time, and the songs were needed for the scheduled shooting, they were recorded in the voices of Shabbir Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The intention was to re-record the Shabbir Kumar portions afterwards in Kishore Kumar’s voice. But the songs turned out to be so well in Shabbir Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar’s voices, that it was decided to keep the songs as it is. And thus the career boost for Shabbir Kumar happened.

I will end the post with a dialogue (by Sunny Deol) in the film, where Amrita Singh refuses to eat the food cooked by Sunny Deol. This is the dialogue I have had to repeat sometimes to my kids, 🙂 🙂 if they disagreed with my cooking:

“Khaana hai to yahi khaana hai, nahi khaana hai to bhi yahi khaana hai”

Hullo Atuldom

I think I should get over this habit of waking up late to dates. I remembered that today (14 august 2018) was Johnny Lever’s birthday and later, yesterday, around seven in the evening I remembered that 14th august is also Shammi Kapoor’s anniversary. He passed away this date in 2011. Its been seven years.

Shammi Kapoor the man with “Neeli aankhen” (bade hai dil ke kale haan yehi neeli si aankhon waale) were his eyes actually blue or were they light? The gora-chitta-banka naujawan. The dancer who, I am sure, made a number of choreographers cry by doing his own stuff to the rhythm of the songs and had audiences lapping it up. And IMHO Helen was one dancer who managed to follow the choreographer when Shammi did his own stuff on his cue during dance numbers – the last part of “ai ai ya karoon main kya suku suku”is the best example for this. He would have continued in this manner but for the death of his beloved wife Geeta Bali, post which he lost interest for a few years, and then when he returned to the screen he began looking older than his age. He played Vinod Khanna’s older brother in 1971 in “Preetam” and father two years later in “Zameer”. Leena Chandavarkar, his heroine in Preetam, looks very tiny in front of him.

His movies all had memorable songs, mostly sung by Mohd. Rafi in the 60s and later in the 70s & 80s Kishore Kumar sang a few songs filmed on Shammi. There is video on YouTube wherein Shammi talks of his friendship with Kishore Kumar which possibly began at the time of “Mem Sahib” (1956/57) but (in Shammi’s words) he got a chance to lip-sync to Kishore only in the late 70s and 80s. when I heard Shammi mention “Mem Sahib” I decided to see it on YouTube. First thing that struck me was all the actors played characters that we later generation audiences are not familiar with. Meena Kumari played a mod-girl, Shammi Kapoor a negative character and Kishore Kumar a brahmachari who is confused about the ways of the world.

Yesterday when I realised the significance of 14th august with regard to Shammi Kapoor I had a chat with our Atulji to find out if there were any Shammi song left, are we at the bottom of the barrel? He gave me a list of post 1970 movies and also mentioned “Preetam”. I remember having seen this movie made by Bhappi Sonie in the times when doordarshan was the sole source of entertainment. I remember Leena Chandavarkar was paired opposite Shammi and Helen was for Vinod Khanna. I remembered the songs were also decently good.
Today’s song is a typical Shammi Kapoor song in the sense it is sung by Mohd. Rafi with music by Shankar Jaikishan. Only odd man out here is the lyricist -Rajinder Krishan.

Remembering Shammi Kapoor with this song from 1971.

“Raat Ke Raahi”(1959) was directed by Naseem for Pushpaanjali Pictures, Bombay. This “social” movie had Shammi Kapoor, Jabeen Jalil, Anwar, Achla sachdev, Nazeer Hussain, Ifthikhar, Radhika, Hammad, Manohar, Prem Sagar, Nirmal, Poonam, Heera, Shashibalka, Shujaat, Pyare, Sooraj etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered. Here are the details of these five songs:-

Daayen baayen chhup chhupa ke MD-Bipin Baabul 14264 13-Apr-18

Here is the sixth and final song from “Raat Ke Raahi”(1959) to appear in the blog. The song is basically sung by Asha Bhonsle with some humming by a male voice. Left to my own devices, I would have guessed that Shammi Kapoor himself has done the humming, but HFGK informs us that this song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Agha Sarwar who was assistant music director of this movie. HFGK also informs us that the record of the song only contains the name of Asha Bhonsle.

I think that the song is an Asha Bhonsle solo but since HFGK contains the name of the male hummer so let us go with HFGK and treat this song as a duet song.

The song is picturised on Jabeen Jaleel who is seen wooing Shammi Kapoor in a beach (Chaupati, I guess).

Vishwamitra Adil is the lyricist.

Two songs in the movie were composed by Jaidev and remining four songs were composed by Bipin Baabul. This song is a Bipin Baabul composition.

With this song, “Raat Ke Raahi”(1959) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

This song also becomes the 500th song from Hindi movies that were released in the year 1959. “Raat Ke Raahi”(1959) becomes the 50th movie of 1959 to be YIPPEED in the blog.

The movie had six songs in it. Four of these songs have been covered.

Here is the fifth song from “Raat Ke Raahi”(1959) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Vishwamitra Adil is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bipin Baabul.

The song is picturised on as a party/ get together song on Jabeen Jaleel (as far as I can tell). Shammi Kapoor is also visible alongwith several other people and all of them are shown dancing in this western style song.

Song-Daayen baayen chhup chhupa ke (Raat Ke Raahi)(1959) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Vishwamitra Adil, MD-Bipin Baabul

Lyrics

daayen baayen chhup chhupaa ke kahaan chale
haaye haaye
dil churaa ke kahaan chale
daayen baayen chhup chhupaa ke kahaan chale
haaye haaye
dil churaa ke kahaan chale
bade bane bhole bhaale
lalalalalala

aasaan hai ae mere pyaare
aankhon se aankhen milaana
ho
lekin ye neechi nigaahen kah dengi saara fasaana
mushqil hai naadaan ye chori chhupaana
daayen baayen chhup chhupa ke kahaan chale
haaye haaye dil churaa ke kahaan chale
bade bane bhole bhaale
aa ha ha ha ha ha

jaate ho thhukra ke jaao
koi bhi kuchh na kahega
ho
ho lekin ye haara hua dil
zaalim ye badla to lega
dekho ji tumko bhi jeene na dega
daayen baayen chhup chhupa ke kahaan chale
haaye haaye dil churaa ke kahaan chale
bade bane bhole bhaale
lalalalaala

jaane ki laakhon hain raahen
aane ka ik raasta hai
haaye
dil ke isi raaste se
aana padega ??
phir shokh jaana to jhoothhi ada hai
yeah
yeah
yeah

“Jawaan Mohabbat” (1971) was produced by Hardeep Chatrath and Krishan Kumar and directed by Bhappi Sonie for Roopanjali Production, Bombay. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Pran, Dhumal, Shashikala, Sarika, Rajendra Nath, Raj Mehra, Madhavi, Daisy Irani, Sujata Bakshi, Krishan Dhawan, Madhumati, Ashwani Kumar, Kumud Tripathi etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth song from “Jawaan Mohabbat” (1971) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and chorus. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The song is picturised as a “picnic” song on Asha Parekh and her sahelis. They are being watched from a distance by Shammi Kapoor and his trusted sidekick Rajendranath.

“Picnic” was made so popular by Hindi movies that it had become a fashionable pastime of people those days. I was a tiny school going kid those days and even we were taken on “picnic” by our school. 🙂 But I do not recall any “picnic” songs being sung on those occasions. We kids were more interested in playing and eating on those occasions. 🙂

The movie had eight songs in it. Six of these songs have been covered in the blog.

Here is the seventh song from “China Town”(1962) to appear in the blog. This song is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

The song is sung in qawaali style but it is picturised as a mujra style dance song on a dancer who lip syncs in Asha Bhonsle’s voice whom I am unable to identify as well as on Shammi Kapoor, playing her client, who sings in Rafi’s voice. It seems that Shammi Kapoor is in disguise and is on a spying mission.

I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the female dancer.

Song-Bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu (China Town)(1962) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

humse mat poochho ke hum kya kar gaye
kis tarah nazron ka daaman bhar gaye
koi inki shokhiyaan dekha kiya
aa aa aa aa
hum to inki saadgi per mar gaye

haaye
alla kasam
o bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu

haath mein teer na talwaar china chin hin chu
haath mein teer na talwaar china chin hin chu

haaye ye naaj ki jis naaj pe laila mit jaaye
haaye ye naaj ki jis naaj pe laila mit jaaye
haaye ye husn ki jis husn pe duniya lut jaaye
dil ise dekhe to mushqil hai ki khaamosh rahe
mera jimma hai
kisi ko bhi agar hosh rahe

haaye haaye haaye haaye sadqe
hai kuchh aisa mera dildaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu

haath mein teer na talwaar china chin chin chu
haath mein teer na talwaar china chin chin chu

inki har baat pe nikle na mera dam kaise
inki har baat pe nikle na mera dam kaise
ye adaayen hon to qurbaan na hon hum kaise
kabhi is tarah khafa
jaise koi pyaar kare
kabhi khaamosh
ki jaise koi ikraar kare
aur
kabhi ikraar mein inkaar china chin chin chu

bada qaatil mera dildaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil mera dildaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu

jab mili aankh
to sab jaur o jafa bhool gaye

o kasam khuda ki
kya karen
aa hi gaya pyaar china chin chin chu
o bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu

haath mein teer na talwaar china chin chin chu
haath mein teer na talwaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
bada qaatil hai mera yaar china chin chin chu
o bada
qaatil
mera yaar
china chin chin chu
bada qaatil
