Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 21
—————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the movie “Kavi-1954”. I have neither watched the movie nor I am aware of many of its songs. However, when I noticed this movie is due for ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ of 17.04.2020, I checked its pending songs. I came across a duet sung by Rafi Saab and Talat Mehmood which I found interesting since I was not aware of this song. Also, the music of this movie is composed by C. Ramchandra ji one of my favorite music directors which is another reason why I am sharing this song here today.

Three songs were represented on the blog on 17.04.2010 including a song from this movie ‘Kavi-1954’;

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Bolo he zameen bolo aasmaan Chakradhaari-1954 All songs covered
Main pee ke nahin aaya Kavi-1954
Nuktaa cheen hai gham e dil Mirza Ghalib-1954 All songs covered

“Kavi-1954” had total ten songs in it, all written by Rajinder Krishan. Music for this movie was composed by C. Ramchandra.
Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Asha Bhonsle and Chitalkar (C. Ramchandra) had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

So far, the following five songs from this movie have been posted on the blog;

Song-Kavita naam hai gyaan ka (Kavi)(1954) Singers-Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

Kavita naam hai gyaan ka aa
ise likhne waale gyaani ee
shoom (?) ka beta bane kavi ee
ye hai uski naadaani ee
dhor charaane waale ae
bhaasha ke ras ko kya jaane ae
aise kavi to kaala akshar
bhains baraabar maanen ae
aise kavi duboyen lutiyaa
Kavita likhne waalon ki ee
aise kavi duboyen lutiyaa
Kavita likhne waalon ki
nayi kalpnaa gayi bhaad mein
dhoom machee nakkaalon ki ee
dhor charaane waalon ki ee

gyaan prabhu ki den hai
nahin kisi ki ye jaagir
jag ko bud’dhi denewaala
dekhe naa gareeb ameer
Ramaayan se badhkar achchha
aur nahin koi lekh
uske likhne waale daaku
Valmiki ko dekh
jaat paat naa poochhe koi
Kavita likhne waalon ki ee
jaat paat naa poochhe koi
Kavita likhne waalon ki
mahal chhod kar bani ye daasi
bojh uthhaane waalon ki ee
Kavita likhne waalon ki ee

badaa kavi hai kahin ka aa
to ik baat bataa aa
jagat mein pehle pahal pehlaa aa
chhand kisne likha aa
sawaal itnaa badaa hai
jawaab chhotaa saa aa
jagat wo chhand hai
Jagdish ne ae isey likhaa aa

badaa kavi hai kahin ka aa
to ik baat bataa aa
jagat mein pehle pahal pehlaa aa
chhand kisne likha aa
sawaal itnaa badaa hai
jawaab chhotaa saa aa
jagat wo chhand hai
Jagdish ne ae isey likhaa aa

banaaya jisne ye sansaar
uska roop hai kya aa
kisine aaj talak
usko aankh se dekhaa aa
hawaa nazar nahin aati ee
hawaa ka roop to hai
jo kuchh nazar mein hai
parmaatma ka roop to hai

khataa muaaf
hai munh chhotaa
aur baat badi ee
zaraa jawaab do o
hai din badaa ya
raat badi ee

bhalaaa ye poochhi hai tumne
kahaan ki baat badi ee
kabhi ke din hain bade ae
aur kabhi ki raat badi ee
tumhaari baat mein
Kavita ka ras nahin aaya
jawaab maine jo sochaa thha
wo nahin paaya
khataa muaaf
hai munh chhotaa
aur baat badi ee
hai din ghareeb ka aa
dhanwaan ki ee hai raat badi ee

LAILA MAJNU(1953) was produced by P N Arora under the banner of All India Pictures and directed by K Amarnath. The star cast included Shammi Kapoor, Nutan, Ulhas, Begum Para, Wasti, Kammo, Ratan Kumar etc. All the songs of this film were penned by Shakeel Badayuni. However, the film had two music directors – Ghulam Mohammed (11 songs) and Sardar Malik (3 songs).

This song is a wonderful example of the fact that Bollywood those days possessed an embarrassment of riches in music. Besides the big name music directors, there were music directors on the fringes who were capable of creating great music as well. C Arjun was one of the lesser names from those days, who was mostly confined to working in low budget movies. But he has still given us some very memorable songs.

Here is a song composed by C Arjun that I was just not aware of. And this song comes as a pleasant surprise. This song is a superb ghazal that is sung by Rafi and Talat Mehmood. The song is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar.

This gem of a composition is from an obscure movie called “Sushilaa” (1966). There is hardly any information avalable about this movie, but what music this movie contained ! Considering that this song came in 1966, this has to be one the last songs sung by Talat Mehmood for a movie. 1966 was a time when old order was about to change giving way to the new, and this song is very much a song of the old order.

Song-Gham ki andheri raat mein (Sushilaa) (1966) Singers-Rafi,Talat Mehmood, Lyrics-Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD-C Arjun

Lyrics

gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein

dard hai saari zindagi
jiskaa koi silaa nahin
dil ko fareb deejiye
aur ye hauslaa nahin
aur ye hauslaa nahin

khud se to badgumaan na ho
khud pe to aitbaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein

khud hi tadap ke rah gaye
dil ki sadaa se kyaa milaa
aag se khelte rahe
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa
ham ko wafaa se kyaa milaa

dil ki lagi bujhaa na de
dil ki lagi se pyaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein

jisse na dil bahal sake
aisi khabar se faaydaa
raat abhi dhali kahaan
aabe shahar se faaydaa
aabe shahar se faaydaa

fasle bahaar aayegi
daur e khizaan guzaar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein
dil ko na beqaraar kar
subah zaroor aayegi
subah ka intazaar kar
gham ki andheri raat mein

I have posted a few songs from ‘Baabul” (1950) already. Al these songs were (and still are) very popular. But one of the most popular (and as yet unposted) song from this movie is the iconic song “chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar aaj jaana padaa”.

I had once mentioned that the version of song seen in the movie and heard in the records was often different because they were recorded on two separate occassions. Imagine a great song being recorded not once but twice ! Once for the movie sound track, and once for the record company.
