After the box office success of the Tamil film, ‘Thevar Magan’ (1992), written and produced by Kamal Hasan with Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hasan, Revathi, Gautami and Nasser in the main roles, Kamal Hasan decided its remake in Hindi with himself in the lead role and Dilip Kumar in Sivaji Ganesan’s role. It was his intense desire to work with Dilip Kumar. However, Dilip Kumar declined to work in the film as he had almost retired from the films. So, Kamal Hasan kept the Hindi remake of the film in the backburner until he sold the film’s rights to his friend, Priyadarshan for its remake in Hindi as ‘Viraasat’ (1997).(Source: Hindustan Times, May 29, 2022).

‘Viraasat’ (1997) was produced by Mushir-Riaz under the banner of M R Productions and was directed by Priyadarshan. The cast included Anil Kapoor and Tabu in the lead roles supported by Amrish Puri, Pooja Batra (debut), Govind Namdeo, Milind Gunaji, Satyen Kappu, Dilip Dhawan, Niraj Vora, Sulabha Deshpande, Reeta Bhaduri etc. The story is based in a village in U.P. which was actually created in Pollachi town in Coimbatore district. But the film’s protagonist’s house in the village was actually one of the palaces in Chettinad region in Tamilnadu.

The story of the film is as under:

After completing his college studies in London, Shakti Thakur (Anil Kapoor) returns to his village along with his fiancé, Anita (Pooja Batra). At the railway station, he receives a warm welcome from his villagers led by Sukhiya (Niraj Vora) and is taken in procession to his house where his father, Raja Thakur (Amrish Puri) is waiting to meet him. Raja is bewildered by his western get up as also of Anita to whom he introduces as his fiancé whom he intends to marry. There is a tacit disapproval of the family for his marriage with Anita but she is well treated as a guest.

After few days of roaming in the village with his fiancé, Shakti comes to know about a family feud between his father and uncle Birju Thakur (Govind Namdev) and the villagers have been divided on the basis of their allegiance to Raja and Birju. Shakti is not comfortable in the environment where there are groups who fight with each other. Shakti reveals to his father that he intends to leave the village and open a chain of fast food outlets in the big cities. Raja Thakur is not happy with Shakti’s decision as he had sent him abroad for higher education for the betterment of his village upon his return.

As a part of reliving his childhood memories, Shakti and Anita visit a village temple which has been closed by Bali Thakur, son of Birju. The temple door is forcibly opened by Sukhiya which enraged Bali. There are riots between two groups of villagers. After witnessing inter-group fights, blood sheds and even murders, followed by his father, Raja Thakur’s sudden death, the inner conscious tells Shakti that he cannot run away from the village. He must find solution to the problem even if he has to prolong his stay in the village. Anita shift to a city where she is going to wait for Shakti after completion of his extended stay in the village.

Basically, Shakti has assumed the role of a family patriarch and a village leader to amicably tackle the inter-family and inter-group clashes. He ropes in village police administration and judicial system to legally address the issues. But nothing works for him. Shakti sees a ray of hopes for him. Narayan (Satyen Kappu), a poor villager lives with his unmarried daughter, Gehna (Tabu) in a house on an imaginary border between the groups of Raja and his estranged brother, Birju. Bali Thakur has forced him to close the right of way for the villagers. Shakti approaches Narayan to open the right of way through his land. Narayan is afraid of Bali Thakur especially with his unmarried daughter, Gehna. Shakti arranges her marriage with a well to do bridegroom from his part of the village. However, on the day of the marriage, bridegroom is absent due to fear of Bali Thakur. Shakti himself offers as bridegroom for Gehna which Narayan and his family gladly accept. Shakti and Gehna get married by sacrificing his feeling towards Anita. With this, Shakti has perforce decided to stay in the village.

In the meanwhile, Anita returns to village and finds Shakti already married to Gehna. She is shocked with a sudden change of event. After a few days of stay, Anita realises the circumstances under which Shakti had to marry Gehna to whom she likes. Anita leaves the village for her native city.

Bali Thakur is not happy with the chain of events that has happened after Shakti has returned from abroad. To add to his insult, in an annual village festival, Gram Panchaayat has overwhelmingly approved the appointment of Shakti as the chairman of the festival. During the festivity, Bali Thakur plants the bombs resulting in the death of both sides of the villagers. As a revenge, villagers are after Bali Thakur and his family members. Shakti protects his uncle Birju Thakur and his family from the enraged villagers. With this act, Birju Thakur has virtually ended the family feud.

Shakti asks Bali Thakur to surrender to the police which he rejects. He charges on Shakti with a sickle to kill him. In their fight, Shakti accidentally kills Bali. Even though his aid, Sukhiya says that he would take blame on himself for killing, Shakti does not agree and gives himself to the police. While police party is taking the hand-cuffed Shakti by the train to a prison, the entire villagers irrespective of their groups come to the railway station to bid a teary farewell to Shakti.

With this, the frequent cycles of group violence end.

The film had 7 songs including one double-version song which were written by Javed Akhtar and set to music by Anu Malik. One song has been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the second song from the film which is my favourite song from the film. I had watched the song umpteen times on the music channels of TV before and after the release of the film. The song is ‘paayalen chunmun chunmun jhanjharen runjhun runjhun’ rendered by K Chitra and Kumar Sanu.

I was not aware that the song has second version also which is a solo rendered by K S Chitra. In fact, in the film, the solo version of the song appears first when Gehna (Tabu) is singing at the request of Anita (Pooja Batra) and Shakti (Anil Kapoor) is quietly listening the song without their knowledge. Gehna again sings the same song in front of Shakti during which time he gives her company in singing. Both the versions of the songs appear in the film after Gehna’s marriage with Shakti.

Anu Malik has used the tune for the song under discussion from the original song, ‘inji iduppazhaga’ from the Tamil film, ‘Thevar Magan’ (1992). While composing the Tamil version of the song, Kamal Hasan is said to have requested Ilaiyaraja to take the tune of ye dil deewaana hai from ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’ (1970) as a reference point. I have given the video link of the Tamil version of the song for comparison purpose.
