‘Prem Rog’ (1982) was a film produced by Raj Kapoor’s RK Film’s and directed by Raj Kapoor himself. It had Rishi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor from the Kapoor clan heading the cast with Padmini Kolhapure, Nanda, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raza Murad, Leela Mishra, Sushma Seth, Bindu, Om Prakash, Kiran Vairale featuring in prominent roles/characters. Vijendra Ghatge, Rajendranath, Tanuja, Asha Sachdev, Monty Nath, Dulari and Dina Pathak featured in either special or guest appearances.
The story was based on the issue of widow remarriage which I am sure is never a dated topic. There is a very poignant dialogue which Shammi Kapoor (as Bade Raja Thakur) says towards the end of the film which meant that “we (The Thakurs) lay down rules for the public to follow and move on in life but in reality we are ourselves bound by age-old customs.” (The original dialogue, as written by Jainendra Jain is “हम लोग दोहरी ज़िंदगी जीते हैं, दूसरों के लिए और, अपने लिए कुछ और। ये सब दिखावा है। मगर हमारे यहाँ विधवा की दूसरी शादी नहीं हुआ करती।”). The story was written by Smt. Kamna Chandra. Pandit Narendra Sharma and Santosh Anand were the lyricists and Laxmikant Pyarelal were the music directors. Sudha Malhotra, Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar and Anwar were the playback singers used.
An interesting titbit on the film is that it was the first time that Shammi Kapoor acted in a RK Film, almost 30 years after Raj Kapoor established the banner. Although they had appeared together in ‘Char Dil Char Rahen’ in 1959 and also appeared in a guest appearance in a song of Manmohan Desai’s 1981 release ‘Naseeb’. Raj Kapoor had cast Shashi Kapoor in his ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (SSS) (1978) and a few of the earlier films of RK Banner.
‘SSS’ had Padmini Kolhapure play the childhood of Zeenat Aman and ‘Prem Rog’ (after four years since “SSS”) saw Padmini play one of her first adult roles. (Nasir Hussain’s ‘Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai’ also had Padmini play an adult role and that released before ‘Prem Rog’) Padmini went on to win the Filmfare award for Best Actress in that year.
We have four songs from film on the blog. Today we are revisiting the film on the occasion of Rishi Kapoor’s birth anniversary- he would have turned 70. He had some different types of roles post 2000 with films like ‘Raju Chacha’, ‘Kuchh Khatti Kuchh Meethi’, ‘Agneepath’ etc and he tasted a different success. The highlight of this period of his career was his on-screen reunion with Amitabh Bachchan in “102 Not Out” when both played old-aged father-son duo.
He was nominated in the Best Supporting actor and Best Actor in a Comic role for playing a 90-year-old grandfather whose heart-attack is instrumental in bringing his dysfunctional family together for a ‘final family photo’ which will be captioned “Kapoor & Sons, since 1921” (that was also the title of the movie). Chintu a.k.a Rishi Kapoor won the Filmfare for this role. Other than this he was an National Award winner for ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970), Filmfare award winner for ‘Bobby’ (1973).
With today’s song we shall also wish (belatedly) Pyarelal Sharma of the Laxmi-Pyare duo on turning a year younger on 3rd September. He has given us so many lovely, melodious moments since the early 60s in the company of Laxmikant Kudalkar after having started as assistants to the big-names of Bollywood music. In all 174 songs composed by the duo appeared in the Finals of Binaca Geetmala. The stats page of the blog says they have composed 2900 songs, in about 635 films, of which the blog has 942 i.e. we are not even halfway in covering the songs composed by Laxmi-Pyare. The first film of the duo came in 1963 and the last film on which they worked together was in 1998. Pyarelal has been seen on Television in recent times as special judge on many musical shows. Here is the song in the voice of Suresh Wadkar that comes at the start of the movie. It shows Rishi Kapoor dressed simply in a shirt devoid of the blazers, jerseys and mufflers that he was famous for. The song is written by Santosh Anand.

Today 18th August 2022 is the eighty-eighth birthday of Poet, Lyricst, Writer, Director, etc. Shri Sampooran Singh Kalra whom we know by his pen name ‘Gulzar’ (born on 18.08.1934).
Gulzar Saab has come a long way in the film industry starting from ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960) and ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961) to the recently released (on OTT) ‘Darlings-2022’ (where he wrote lyrics for a song).
Much has been written about him and most of us are well aware of his ‘cinematic excellence’ and his unique ‘poetry’ where he uses the ‘similes’ in his unique ways in his poetry and lyrics in Hindi Film Music.
There have been numerous posts on the blog about Gulzar Saab and there will be many coming in future. So, today, I am not going into the details of his movies and lyrics list which I like most or which have left an indelible mark on my mind. But I would like to mention here that while Gulzar Saab have done so much in all areas of writing, cinema, and poetry I have yet to read many of his works other than movies. However, in the case of movies I can say that I have watched many of the movies directed by him. And l loved them all.
One more thing which I am very fond of Gulzar Saab is his writings for children or his lyrics for the movies for children and the non-filmi albums of his for children (like ‘Karadi Tales etc). I would also like to mention his commentary in two audio albums one for film music i.e., ‘Fursat Ke Raat Din’ and one for Bhupen Hazarika’s song ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’ which I like very much. Finally, I would like to mention his song for tele serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’ which is also one of my most favorite albums.
There are many things which one can write about him and his works in cinema and other than ‘cinema’. However, today we leave this for another day and straightway come to today’s song to celebrate Gulzar Saab’s birthday on the blog. (This song is lying with us since almost a decade now 😊).
This song is from the 1990 movie ‘Lekin’.
‘Lekin’ was directed by Gulzar for Dinanath Kala Mandir. Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Bal Phoole were the producers of this movie. It was presented by Lata Mangeshkar. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1990.
It had Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan, Alok Nath, Moon Moon Sen, Vijayendra Ghatge, Beena, Manohar Singh, Ram Mohan, Ajit Vachhani, Sunil Advani, Shabir Abbas, Masood Akhtar, Yash Sharma, GP Singh, Bashir Khan, Mohafiz Haider, S Madan, Harmeet Singh, Umesh Vyas, Mansi Upadhyay, Sapna Awasthy, Rashmi, Ahmed Siddiqui, and Baby Shabana Khan. Hema Malini made a guest appearance in this movie.
The story of this movie was written by Gulzar, who also wrote the screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Sadanand Shetty, Ravi, and Aadinath Mangeshkar.
This movie has eight soundtracks as mentioned on the blurb of the audio cassette of this movie. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. I like all songs of this movie very much and this is one of my most favorite albums. Today’s song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and on screen it is lip-synced by Vinod Khanna.
This movie is an interesting movie to watch, so nothing more about the movie here 😊

Rajesh Khanna – Birth Anniversary on 29/12/2020

Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of hindi films, was born as Jatin Khanna on 29/12/1942 at Amritsar, Punjab. He is said to have had 17 solo hits from 1969 to 1971. This might be the only thing where Rajesh Khanna is ahead of superstar of the millennium, Amitabh Bachchan. He holds the record of 48 Platinum Jubilee hits and 26 Golden jubilee hits plus 22 silver jubilee hits. Certainly overtook the Silver Jubilee star Rajendra Kumar in a big way, who had 25 silver Jubilees in his time.
Not, really having lived through the era of ‘Rajesh Khanna phenomena’, makes the experience that much less effective, but I have read a lot about it in urdu film magazine “Shama”. I can also vouch for his versatility as actor, who was comfortable in any type of character. Even through the superstardom, the quality of real story based meaningful films was maintained. With his performance in films like Anand, Safar, Khamoshi, Bawarchi, Mere Jeewan saathi, Amar Prem, Aradhana, Bahaaron ke Sapne, Namak Haram etc. he proved his mettle as an versatile actor.
As a tribute on his 78th birth anniversary, I am presenting a song from ‘Disco Dancer’ 1982, where Rajesh Khanna had a special appearance. There are quite a few special appearances and guest appearances in his filmography, which shows he did remember the benefactors in his life and did return the favours if he could. He did many number of films with Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Manmohan Desai, J. Om Prakash and Shakti Samant.
The song is a multiple version song, composed by Bappi Lahiri and written by Anjaan. Suresh Wadkar is giving playback to Rajesh Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar is singing for a child artist playing the young Mithun Chakravorty. This happy version is a ‘road side tamasha’ category song as Rajesh Khanna and the child perform in the streets. The child artist could be Baby Pinky. The sad version is a climax situation song in the auditorium, where again Rajesh Khanna is trying to coax a grown up disco star Mithun Chakravorty to start singing. This is a solo version of Suresh Wadkar.
A Trivia about this film:
Rajesh Khanna agreed to make a small appearance in this film without charging a fee. He did so to return a favour he owed to the film’s producer, director B. Subhash. It was Subhash who had recommended Rajesh Khanna to the producers of “Thodi si Bewafaii” (1980) when they were considering Sanjeev Kumar for the film’s lead role. The success of “Thodi si Bewafaii” helped stabilise Khanna’s career at a time when his films were bombing one after the other.

A last memory about Rajesh Khanna is a poetry loving character who is seen carrying around and reading a small book of Urdu poetry in this song of ‘Anand’. The book could be Sahir Ludhianvi’s “Parchhaiyaan”, but I am not sure.
It is a great tribute to the love of the language if a Bengali set up film shows a book in urdu script. The Bengali itself being a rich language, literature wise and status wise. It could have been Rajesh Khanna’s own choice.

Sai Paranjpye has so far directed 8 feature films in Hindi. She has written story and script for all these films. Each of these films has some interesting background as to what prompted her to make those films. In this article, I am covering her film ‘Saaz’ (1997) which was produced by Amit Khanna under the banner ‘Pulse Films’ of the Plus Channel of which he was the managing director during 1989-2000.
Sometime in 1995-96, Plus Channel decided to produce some ‘middle-of-the-road’ films. Directors like Shyam Bengal, Basu Chatterjee, Sudhir Mishra, Aruna Raje, Gautam Ghosh and Sai Paranjpye were enlisted to direct such genre of films which resulted in the release of films, ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996), ‘Gudgudee’ (1997), ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi’ (1996), ‘Bhairavi’ (1996), ‘Gudia’ (1997) and ‘Saaz’ (1997), respectively.
Shabana Azmi had worked with Sai Paranjpye in ‘Sparsh’ (1980) and ‘Disha’ (1990). As per Sai Paranjpye’s Marathi book, ‘Sai – Maaza Kalapravaas’ (2016), one day Shabana came to her with a proposal on behalf of Plus Channel to direct a film with a woman-oriented story in which she would like to work. Sai Paranjpye accepted the proposal. The subject of sibling rivalry in the professional fields had attracted Sai Paranjpye but she had not thought of making a film on the subject. With this proposal, she thought as to why not make a film on sibling rivalry.
We are aware that there have been many instances of sibling rivalries – be in epics, history, business, media, industrial houses etc in India where there was thin line of difference between the professional and personal rivalries. According to Sai Paranjapye, sibling rivalry of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle is unique in the sense that their personal relationship by and large has remained intact over the years in the midst of their professional rivalry. And Sai Paranjpye wanted to bring this uniqueness in the film.
When Sai Paranjpye worked on the script of the film, she realised that the film was leaning towards making of a biopic on Asha Bhosle. She felt uncomfortable to make a film on such a script involving the personal lives of the siblings. Furthermore, she has no acquaintance with both the sisters. The idea of making a film depicting Asha Bhosle was, therefore, dropped. However, in the revised script, the main theme of two playback singing sisters were kept in mind with some twists in the stories just to segregate her story from the real life story of Lata and Asha Bhosle. However, a couple of events which actually happened during the lives of Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were incorporated as they were in the public domain, written by those who had witness those events.
The star cast of ‘Saaz’ (1997) included Shabana Azmi, Aruna Irani, Parikshit Sahani, Raghuveer Yadav, Ayesha Dharker, Zakir Hussain, Amar Talwar, Brijbhushan Sahani, Bhupen Hazarika etc. The story, script and dialogues were written by Sai Paranjpye who also directed the film. The film was mostly shot around Mumbai. Some last part of the film were shot in Seychelles.
The film was certified by the Censor Board on 31-12-1996. But film failed to get release in theaters. The reason is stated to be the ban put by the Theater Owners Association on the exhibition of films produced by Plus Films due to the non-payment of arrears of rent from Plus Channel to some theater owners. I am not aware whether the film was released in the theater after this ban. Probably, the film got released later on TV. It was only after reading some parts of the script of the film published verbatim in Sai Paranjpye’s Marathi book referred to above that made me to watch the film. I am pleasantly surprised to note that she has handled the theme of sibling rivalry of playback singing sisters very delicately and objectively. There are some poignant moments between the two sisters which are very heart-touching.
The film’s story has been told in a flash-back mode during Bansi’s (Shabana Azmi)’s sessions with a psychiatrist played by Parikshit Sahani. She needed this treatment as she has lost the will to sing after the death of Hemang Desai (Zakir Hussain) with whom she was in love and would have married him. In all her sessions, Bansi reveals events from her childhood to playback singing career as to how she was always played second fiddle to her elder sister. How she broke the relationship with her didi for 10 years due to snatching of her chance to sing on India’s Independence Day at Delhi. But after the sudden death of her elder sister, Bansi feels guilty of depriving her elder sister of spending time with her daughter. Towards the end of the film, Bansi gets a good news that her daughter has won the award as a promising playback singer. This pleasant news makes Bansi to sing live in front of the audience in Seychelles. The tape of her singing is sent to psychiatrist who comes at the airport to receive her and announces that she does not need any more treatment. So his relationship with Bansi as a doctor and a patient is over. Instead, he wants now to be her friend. The films end with both them walking together out of the airport.
In my view, this film is not one of the best among the films Sai Paranjpye has directed. Probably, in trying to make the film different from that of the sibling rivalry of Lata and Asha Bhosle, too many characters were introduced. As a result, about last one hour of film does appear some disconnect from the first part of the film which has some brilliant stamp of Sai Paranjpye. However, I feel that she has succeeded in creating sympathy of the audience for the younger sister without their malice towards the elder one.
In keeping with the subject of the story, ‘Saaz’ (1997) has as many as 11 songs (including a multiple version song). Songs are written by Javed Akhtar which have been set to music by 4 music directors – Ustad Zakir Hussain, Bhupen Hazarika, Raj Kamal and Yashwant Deo. The reason given by Sai Paranjpye for multiple music directors is that since sisters are playback singers working with different music directors, the songs in the film should reflect the different style of music direction. Two of the music directors, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Bhupen Hazarika also acted as music directors in the film.
Out of the 11 songs of the film, 3 songs have been covered in the Blog, all by Peevesie’s Mom. I am presenting the 4th song from the film which is a multiple version song. The song is “Baadal Ghumad Badh Aaye”. The male version of the song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy sings the female version. Both the versions of the song are set to music by Yashwant Deo in Raag Megh-Malhar. In the credit titles of the film, only Javed Akhtar’s name appears as a lyricist. But in reality, both the versions of the song have been written by Sai Paranjpye. There is an anecdote as to why Sai Paranjpye had to write the lyrics of the song as revealed by her in her Marathi book referred to above.
Javed Akhtar has written all the songs except the one under discussion which was last to be written. Despite repeated reminder, Javed Akhtar could not write the song. Yashwant Deo who was to set the song to music had booked the recording room and taken the dates of Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy. All the musicians were also booked for the date of recording. Now only two days had left for the recording of the song but both the version of song’s lyrics was not yet ready. Just one day before the song recording date, it came to light that Javed Akhtar has gone to Khandala with a film producer. The cancellation of recording of the song would have entailed a huge loss and also the shooting schedules would have been affected entailing further loss.
Yashwant Deo mentioned to Sai Paranjpye that even if he gets the song in the morning of the song recording date, he can manage somehow to complete the rehearsals and record the song at the appointed time at noon. Sai Paranjpye came home at night and completed the lyrics of two versions of the song, foregoing her sleep. In the morning, she handed over the lyrics to Yashwant Deo and recording of the songs took place as schedule.
On return from Khandala on the next day, Javed Akhtar was shocked to learn that the songs have already been recorded. He got annoyed on Sai Paranjpye. After 3-4 days, an executive from Plus Films came to her asking for her lyrics which Javed Akhtar wanted to read. He took lyrics to Javed Akhtar. There was no further development which meant that Javed Akhtar had no issue with the lyrics. On this issue, Shabana Azmi remained neutral.
Javed Akhtar won the National Film Award for the best lyrics in ‘Saaz’ (1997).
It is not an easy task for a novice to write lyrics based on Hindustani classical raags. The choice of words shows that Sai Paranjpye has hold over Sanskritised Hindi. For the first time, I have heard the word kanakalankrit bhor (dawn of golden colour). While the male version of the song is reflective of the onset of the rains, the female version of the song signals the end of the rains and the sun is shining giving a dawn of hope. This is symbolic for the resurgence of playback singing career of Bansi (Shabana Azmi) after she lost her will to sing.
Suresh Wadkar version of the song is pictuirsed on Raghuveer Yadhav who has played the role of a father of singing sisters, Mansi and Bansi. The picturization of the song is based on a true story in the life of Dinanath Mangeshkar who had gone to the house of Vishram Bedekar (Marathi and Hindi film director) in the midnight, drenched under heavy rains to borrow money to quench his thirst for alcohol. Bedekar taunted him by saying that it did not behove well for such a great artist to beg for money. Dinanath Mangeshkar retorted by impromptu singing a bandish in Raag Megh-Malhar and after completing the bandish, he took money from Bedekar as a present for his rendering.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 29

Regulars on this blog might have noticed that now our dear Prakash ji is also regularly contributing to the ‘Blog Ten Year Challenge’ series and I feel very happy about that and relaxed too, because now we will not miss many of these opportunities on the blog (at least for the movies from ‘seventies’).
And though our editors were also contributing to this series sometimes, most of the time I was running alone, so now the ‘baton’ has been taken over and the ‘musical relay’ continues 😊
When I got into touch with Prakash ji to congratulate him for his participation, we also discussed that we will together try to communicate and co-ordinate as possible and while Prakash ji can always do the lyrics part (or some he has already done earlier) I can do the write up part. We also discussed on the opportunities missed due to one reason or the other.
Both of us regret that we missed the opportunity of 30th April for the movie ‘Daaku-1975’. Though Prakash ji had sent a song for this date, but maybe our editors could not post it due to other priorities and work. And I did not send a song or write-up for this movie since I thought Prakash ji might have done that.
Today’s post is the result of this ‘well-co-ordinated team effort’ …
And this situation of ‘ideal team effort’ 😊 was also expressed few years back either in the comments or mail communications in the group, that a regular lyrics contributor and a regular post writer coming together will make it more interesting (I was not a regular on writing posts then) to keep the ‘score card’ moving.
After communicating with Prakash ji I felt like ‘ham donon ek doosre ke purak ban sakte hain’ and even I remember this from the movie ‘Border’ ‘ham hi ham hain to kya ham hain, tum hi tum ho to kya tum ho’ 😊 (filmon ke baare mein sochne ka asar, aur kya?), or just like today’s song ‘mujhe teri zaroorat hai, tujhe meri zaroorat hai’ 😊 😊
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Kaanoon Aur Mujrim-1981’.
I had not watched this movie and didn’t know anything about it until I listened to one of its song “Shaam rangeen huyi hai tere aanchal ki tarah” during early eighties on radio. And after many years of listening this song I got to know the name of the movie(I had mentioned this earlier in my post here ).
I think this movie must have been an obscure movie.
‘Kaanoon Aur Mujrim’ or ‘Qaanoon Aur Mujrim-1981’ was directed by Sham Jethani and Jeevan Kumar for ‘L.K. Movies, Bombay’. They were also the writers of this movie.
S.C. Jethani was the producer of this movie. This movie had Vijendra Mittal, Madhumalini, Padma Khanna, Meena T., Jayshree T., Bharat Kapoor, Avtar Gill, Anand, Ratna, Ved Goswami, C.S. Mantri, Khalil Khan, Dr. Relan, Reema, Venus, Maqbool, Sarita, Sheela, Deepak, Aasha, Shaan and others. Jagdish Raj, Bhagwan Dada, Mohan Choti make friendly appearances in this movie.
This movie introduced Manish Kumar and Noorie.
‘Kaanoon Aur Mujrim-1981’ was passed by Censor Board on 18.06.1981.
This movie had total six songs composed by C. Arjun. He was assisted by Gyan and Iqbal. Asad Bhopali wrote four songs for this movie and Ahmed Wasi wrote two songs.
Today’s song is penned by Ahmed Wasi. The first song of this movie was posted on the blog on 14.05.2010. It was also penned by Ahmed Wasi. What a melodious song and what beautiful meaningful lyrics it had. I thought this song – Shaam rangeen huyi hai tere aanchal ki tarah was the only well-known song from this movie.
But after listening to today’s song it also sounds familiar and maybe I have heard it on Radio earlier.
Today’s song is a solo song sung by Suresh Wadkar. Other than him Shailendra Singh, Usha Mangeshkar, Dilraj Kaur and Shobha Gurtu have given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Now Dilraj Kaur and Shobha Gurtu’s name are more than enough to make one curious to know about the songs sung by them. Well, they will be coming in the future on the blog (if available).
As mentioned above lyrics for the today’s song were sent by Prakashchandra ji.
Ten years back on 14.05.2010 three songs were represented on the blog including a song from this movie “Kanoon Aur Mujrim-1981”.

# The Special Voices of the Decade (1971-1980) – 5 # Suresh Wadkar #

Welcome all to this fifth article in this series where we are discussing Special Voices that made their debut in HFM in the Seventies and carved their own niche on the HFM scene.
Some of them enjoyed success for a little while only to fade away with passage of time. Some of them became popular and continued to remain so for considerable time.
No matter how they fared at the HFM scene, all of them contributed in enriching HFM. All of them provided music lovers with many memories to cherish and savour.
Today we will be discussing about one such talented artist- Singer- who made his debut in 1977 and over the years has given us many memorable songs and who is active even now (I think his latest film song was from ‘Bramhaand Nayak Sai Baba-2016’ and a NF -ghazal album sung by him was released in 2016 in memory of his guru ‘Acharya Jiyalal Vasant’ i.e. ‘Chupke Chupke’) In addition, he is active in singing Marathi and other regional language songs as well.)
In his career spanning almost forty years, he has more than five hundred songs to his credit (if the sources I am referring to are correct). And given the number of songs he has sung I can say that his must be the most prolific artist among all the artists who will be featuring in this series …
Incidentally I get a chance to share one of his songs for our ASAD – 10th anniversary celebrations. And regulars to this blog who have listened to this song ‘Kaale kaale baadal jab bhi chhayenge’ and the male voice in it, I am sure must be still feeling the sweetness, the magic and the melodious range of this voice lingering in their ears still now or for that matter of any songs sung by him leave this impact on the listeners as usual.

Suresh Ishwar Wadkar was born on 7th August’1954 in Kolhapur (Maharashtra).
We wish him a belated happy Birthday and healthy and peaceful life ahead…

Another story of coming from a very humble background and scaling newer heights through sheer dedication, sincerity and perseverance in the field of music.
Suresh Wadkar’s father was a ‘mill worker’ in Sitaram Mills. His father was very fond of music and particularly ‘bhajans’. And the surroundings in which he grown up was traditional and cultural as all festivals were celebrated with fervour and music being an intrinsic part of it.
His father was very fond of ‘bhajans’ and he used to attend many programmes of ‘bhajans’ where Suresh then 4/5 years old used to accompany his father in these programmes of ‘Bhajan’. That is where he got with in all our traditions and cultures and listening to talented singers. And as it happened he was singing something and that was noticed by his father, and thus started his formal training classes in music when he was five only.
His guru from Sangli Shri Digrajkar was then giving him lessons in singing. He advised Suresh’s father to let Suresh continue with music and singing.
When he was eight he come to Acharya Jiyalal Vasant’s gurukul and Acharya ji groomed him into what he is today. He took care of all of his education and all. And looking into his passion when he was only thirteen years old his guru Jiyalal ji advised him to give training to other students in his institute.
Looking at his understanding of music, Acharya ji advised Suresh Wadkar to pursue education and degree in music. Following his guru’s advice Suresh Wadkar joined Prayag Sangeet Samiti and secured his degree of ‘Prabhakar’ in music and later joined ‘Arya Vidya Mandir’ in Mumbai as a ‘Music Teacher.
Suresh Wadkar, naturally, has great respect and admiration for his Guru ji and other disciples at the ‘gurukul’ – his ‘guru bhai’ and ‘guru behen’ and his elder sister i.e. daughter of Acharya ji – Prem Vasant– he speaks about them with great love and passion. And he has in deep sense all the gratitude for whatever his ‘guru ji’ has given to him and that is why after his ‘guru ji’ passed away being an elder among all the disciples he has shouldered the responsibility of his ‘guru ji’s legacy’ in the form of the school of music founded by his guru – ‘Ajivasan’ (this also gives online training in music).
He also started an online music school, called SWAMA (Suresh Wadkar Ajivasan Music Academy), (an innovative initiative) under Ace Open University continue to impart training in music in New Jersey. He, his wife, and his ‘guru sister’ visits every three months to supervise the operations and classes going on there.
and for him ‘music’ is the most difficult and greatest form of art which needs more dedication, seriousness and religiousness in efforts.
He has very high regards towards all the music directors who had given him the opportunity to sing and specially for the Mangeshkars he speaks about them with respect and gratitude. In his interview here one can listen his thoughts and just imagine what kind of a ‘noble’ and ‘pure’ character must be and that is what I think we finds in his voice too.
He was also present in the recent Jaidev Birth Centenary celebrations held at NCPA (NCPA Bandish music festival) Mumbai where our Respected Senior Shri Bharat Bhai was also present.

How this ‘anokhi aawaaz’ make his debut in the Hindi Film Industry is another interesting story.
It so happened that in 1970s (in 1976 to be specific) a big musical competition organised by ‘Sur-Singaar Sansad’ was held where participants aspiring to be singers from all over India participated this competition.
However, Suresh Wadkar’s singing impressed everybody and he was awarded ‘Madan Mohan Puraskar’.
Famous music directors like Jaidev, Ravindra Jain, Pt Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Sudhir Phadke and Pt Shivkumar Sharma and Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (Shiv-Hari) were the panel of the judges who judge the competition and selected the winner.
Ravindra Jain while announcing Suresh Wadkar as winner also announced that he will be singing a song in his next movie and thus happened ‘vrishti pade taapur tupoor’ …
The next opportunity for Suresh Wadkar came straight way from the most respected and talented Music director Jaidev ji who given him the opportunity to sing in ‘Gaman-1978’. Later on, Suresh Wadkar also worked with him as his assistant and sing for him whenever he was given an opportunity to do so.
While assisting Jaidev ji he got to learn many things of music and the nuances of composing music.
Somehow as they say it was destined to be, Lata Mangeshkar is said to have heard about this voice and she was so impressed by his singing that she recommended him to the famous music duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal and also to Khayyam Saab and Kalyanji bhai-Anand ji bhai.
After that, it was no looking back for Suresh Wadkar and he keep getting many opportunities from all music directors ruling the HFM at that time.

For me, I have vague memories of this song ‘vrishti pade taapur tupoor’ being frequently heard on radio & loudspeakers and I do like it very much.
Then ‘seene mein jalan’, I remember I liked it very much and may be that was the time when for the first time I must have been got to know about the singer or we among friends must have discussed about this voice (looking my interests in HFM since childhood, I think I can say that).
Then I remember this song from ‘Krodhi’ in 1981 ‘chal chameli baag mein’ was a regular at the ‘Binaca Geetmala’ and it stood 16th in the annual programme of the Binaca Geetmala that year.
However, the next year’s – 1982’s ‘Binaca Geetmala’ in its annual programme saw as many as four songs having Suresh Wadkar’s voice viz. ‘Main hoon Prem Rogi’, ‘Meri qismat mein tu nahin shaayad’, ‘Muhabbat hai kyaa cheez hamko bataao’ all from ‘Prem Rog-1982’ and ‘Megha re megha re’ from ‘Pyaasa Saawan-1981’.
I think with the songs of ‘Prem Rog-1981’ Suresh Wadkar became a household name and almost all of its songs were a huge hit though ‘bhanware ne khilaaya phool’ is my favourite. It is different thing that not this song but the other songs of ‘Prem Rog’ (couple of which I don’t like then), make to the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’.
Before that we had ‘megha re megha re’ from ‘Pyaasa Saawan’ taking us to reach out the clouds about to rain ‘the message of love’ … and we got soaked in the melodious voice of Suresh Wadkar …
Surprisingly before that we had his voice at number seven of annual ‘Binaca Geetmala-1979’ singing ‘Jijaaji jiaaji honewaale jijaaji’ in which he lent voice for Vinod Mehra in ‘Saajan Bina Suhaagan-1978’.
In 1981 we also have the magical ‘ye aankhen dekh kar ham saari duniya’ from ‘Dhanwan’ which spelled its magic on audience and it was too very popular and is also one of my favourite songs. (and this was his first song to appear on our blog).
After that I remember may be sometime around 1982-83 when I was on a visit to Nagpur (may be for watching the cricket between India and Pakistan at my Uncle’s home, on TV which had just reached us then, and into the old city market I heard this song playing on Radio ‘shaam rangeen huyi hai’ and I was totally taken away by this song. At that time, I was not knowing which movie it was from. Many years I keep searching for this song which I later got to know (I think it was because of this blog only) it was from. It was from the 1981 movie ‘Kaanoon Aur Mujrim’. Once again, a gem of song but not rewarded and forgotten in the midst of other popular songs then.
Also, I cannot forget ‘ae zindagi gale lagaa le’ from ‘Sadma-1983’, so close to our hearts and may have been liked by many many like me.
‘Likhne waale ne likh daale’ from Arpan from the same year was on 19th while meri qismat mein tu nahin shaayad was on 12th in 1983 annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’.
Later on, we have ‘aur kyaa ahad e wafaa hote hain’ from ‘Sunny-1984’, ‘saanjh dhaley gagan taley’ from ‘Utsav-1984’, then we have gems of songs from ‘Sur Sangam-1985, popular songs coming from ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili-1985’, ‘Khaamosh sa afsaana paani se likhaa hota’ from the UR – Libaas -1988, ‘sooni sooni ankhiyon mein’ and ‘rakibon se habibon se’ from ‘Laal Dupattaa Mal Mal Ka’, ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir wo jhadi hai’, ‘surmayi shaam is tarah aaye’ from ‘Lekin-1990’, ‘Dil-1991’, ‘Sangeet-1992’, and there are many.
Many are my favourites too… like ‘tumse mil ke aisaa lagaa’, ‘dhadkan zaraa ruk gayee hai’, ‘husn pahaadon ka’ and many …
And how can I forget ‘hamraahi mere hamraahi’ and ‘aur is dil mein kyaa rakhaa hai’, then I had also watched this movie ‘Yaadon Ki Kasam-1985’ which had ‘Baithh mere paas tujhe dekhta rahoon’.
I also remember ‘chaudhavin raat hai, ab chaand dikha de apna’ from ‘Yaadon Ke Mausam-1990’ which was frequently heard and popular then …
Not to forget ‘chappa chappa charkha chale’ and ‘chhod aaye ham wo galiyaan’ both from ‘Maachis-1996’.
There are many … and I would like to note here that the list of his Marathi songs is another long list where I have my favourites and many gems of songs which he has sung in Marathi.
The list goes on and on and we cannot list them all (at least the popular ones) here due to space constraint (and if I have missed to mention any prominent one I would like readers to forgive me for that).
After coming into the contact with this blog initially I had shared few of his songs (in 2012-13) like ‘Goron ki naa kaalon ki’ (from Disco Dancer, which I think was also quite popular in those years), then ‘Kabhi ajnabi thhe (Title Song), and ‘Surmayi shaam’ from ‘Lekin’ which remains to be posted yet. And there are many of songs still to be posted on the blog and the reason may be that since his career started at the end of seventies and picked up later in the eighties, we still have a long way to go to represent his songs on the blog (as of now 57 only).
So, I will stop the listing them here and come back to the today’s post now …
For this post, selecting a song was very difficult because as I said above, we still have a long way to go and there are many songs to choose from.
However, I had this song ‘Ram Dulari maike gayi’ 🙂 from ‘Meri Biwi Ki Shaadi’ in my mind since many years and I had decided that I will select only this song and not any other. (And it was from a movie of seventies and nostalgic for me too 🙂 )
But, while I was browsing through the filmography of Suresh Wadkar songs I came across this movie and when I listened to this song I was totally taken by it and it started growing on me as I listened to it again and again. This was from the movie ‘Bhayaanak-1979’ composed by Usha Khanna.
I had not watched this movie earlier and even now. From the star cast I can guess that this song is lip synced on screen by Ravi Kumar, a newcomer, who was paired with Razia Sultana, another newcomer. The picturisation of this song and its singing by Suresh Wadkar makes it very special.
As the movie didn’t fare well at the box office, I think this and other songs of this movie were forgotten easily.
‘Bhayaanak-1979’ was directed by S.U. Saiyed for ‘AVM Arts International’.
It had Mithun Chakravarty, Sadhoo Meher, Niloo Phule, Chandrashekhar, Mushtaq Merchant, C.S. Dubey, Jagdish Raj, Shaheen Khan, Sushila Raut, Annu Dhawan, Sadhna Khote, Hamid Rakesh, Major Anand, Fatima, Mannu Arora, Master Danny Jr., Master Abid, Master Anis, M. Miquel, and Madan Joshi and Om Shiv Puri were the other star cast of this movie.
Ranjeeta had a special appearance in this movie. Sharad Saxena makes a Guest appearance in this movie.
The movie introduced Ranjan Garewal, Shashi Ranjan and a ‘fresh romantic pair Ravi Kumar and Razia Sultana’ (as per the movie titles 😊)
Warsi Ahmed Siddiq was the Chief Assistant Director of this movie.
Harish Choudhry was the editor of this movie, and he was assisted by Sudhir Deshpande.
M.Maroof wrote the script of this movie. Munir Shah was the Dialogue Director.
Dialogues were written by Madan Joshi, while the story was by the AVM arts story department.
It was passed by Censor Board on 23.08.1979.
It was a suspense movie released for restricted viewing with ‘A’ certificate.
Lyrics of the five songs in this movie were penned by Indivar and music was composed by Usha Khanna.
Suresh Wadkar, Hemlata, Anuradha Paudwal (wrongly spelled Paduwal in the titles of the movie) gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

When I thought of this write up considering the information available I thought I would be able to send it before 7th Aug, however after going into the details of his life and career I doubt whether I have been able to do justice to the feelings and thoughts going in my mind, as the enormity of his talent, his struggle and what he has achieved is such that it requires a detailed study or a ‘full biography’ in the form of a book (at least for me).

IN CUSTODY (1994) also known as MUHAFIZ was a film belonging to the parallel cinema based on Booker award nominated novel by the same name written by Anita Desai. The film was produced under the banner of Merchant Ivory Productions and was directed by Ismail Merchant. The star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Sushma Seth, Neena Gupta, Tinnu Anand, Ajay Sahani, Prayag Raj, Virendra Saxena etc. The film picked up published nazms and ghazals of Faiz Ahmed Faiz for songs which were jointly composed by Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan.
