Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -10 (1990)

Today 4th January’2023 is the twenty-ninth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ of the great music-director Rahul Dev Burman whom we fondly know by his nickname ‘Pancham’.

Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27th June’1939 and he passed away on 4th January’1994 at the age of only 54.

As a tribute to him on the blog, today we will enjoy a song composed by him from the movie of the decade 1981-1990. Under this special series where we have been visiting Pancham’s music year wise from 1981 to 1990 today we will look at the movies of the year 1990.

Before that let us have a look at the Pancham’s filmography as a music director for the decade of 1981-1990.

(Note – I have tried to compile the above table with as much accuracy as possible based on the information available in HFGK Vol-VI (1981-1985) and Hindi Filmography (1986-2000). I would request readers to suggest additions/ corrections if anything is missing. I would also like to apologise if there is any mistake on my part while compiling this table. We will be further adding the filmography of Pancham for the decade 1971-1980 and earlier than that, and also movies further after 1990 to have a complete filmography of Pancham in the future on the blog.).

Till then let us enjoy today’s song composed by Pancham…

Let us pay our tributes to Pancham and thank him for all the great music which he left behind us to enjoy.

Kis ki sadaayen mujhko bulaayen Red Rose(1980) (Lyrics by Prakashchandraji) 9:10 pm
Shakti de maa Ashaanti(1982) (Lyrics by Avinashji) 9:40 pm

29/12/2012 was a Saturday. As can be seen from the above list Atulji posted the first song at 7.38 in the morning. 12 songs were posted, 6 of which were guest posts from which 4 were by Sudhirji (he was also very active on the blog then) and one each by Nahmji & Arunkumarji.

The last three posts on that date had lyrics contributed by Avinashji, Prakashchandraji and Khyatiji; all three of which were songs featuring Rajesh Khanna for his birthday. It was the first birthdate after Kaka’s death in July that year; we were remembering him on what would have been his 70th birthday.

The song that was contributed by Avinashji was from “Ashanti” an Eagle Film’s production. Hatt jaao deewaane aaye was a song from the 1960 release “Singapore” which was also an Eagle Films’ production that was directed by Shakti Samanta. (that must have been unplanned, I am sure).

“Ashanti” (1982), a movie produced by Parvesh Mehra & Rajiv Mehra of Eagle Film’s and directed by Umesh Mehra. It had music by R.D. Burman with Anand Bakshi as the lyricist. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh were the playback singers used. The following three songs from this movie are on the blog.

Shakti de maa 29 december 2012
Laungi mirchi main Kolhapur ki 19 November 2019
Na tujhse na mujhse 29 December 2021

“Ashanti” was one of the multi-starrers of that year. It had Rajesh Khanna heading a cast of Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Mithun Chakravarthy, Kanwaljeet, Amrish Puri, Satyen Kappu, Jeevan Ramesh Deo, Nadira, Pinchoo kapoor, Narendranath, Monty Nath, and many more known faces that formed the supporting cast. It was an action film and was the story of an honest & dedicated police officer played by Rajesh Khanna who intercepts a bank robbery but is himself caught with the suitcase of stolen money, tried in the court and jailed. Further twists in the tale lead him to loosing a leg too. On his release from prison he seeks out the wrong doers and for this he has help from the three heroines and Shankar Dada played by Mithun. If my memory is correct, one of the heroines is also the lost daughter of Amrish Puri who is the cause of all the troubles of the police officer. The movie comes to a close after a lot of drama and high voltage action.

Today’s song has the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar. The song is picturised as a disco dance song on Zeenat Aman and Kanwaljeet. Rajesh Khanna is present among the audience. He is seen seated around a table with Shabana Azmi and he is seen looking furtively as befits a police officer on an important sectet mission.

Missing Kaka a.k.a Rajesh (first Superstar of Bollywood) Khanna on what would have been his 80th birthday.

Song-Dil diya hai maine dil liya hai (Ashaanti)(1982) Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman
Both

Lyrics

aaa
dil diya hai maine dil liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
arey haan kisi se maine pyaar kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
mere dilbar ka jaane jigar ka
mere dil pe naam likha hai
ku ku
dil diya hai
maine dil liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
arre haan kisi se maine pyaar kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna

meri mohabbat ke liye
pyaar bhara dil laaye ho
mujhko mager afsos hai
tum zara der se aaye ho
haath kisi ne mera thhaam liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
mere dilbar ka jane jigar ka
mere dil pe naam likha hai
ku ku
dil diya hai
maine dil liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
haan kisi se maine pyaar kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna

Chorus

meri nigaahon pe teri
zulfon ka baadal chhaa gaya
jhoom ke baadal ki tarah
tera deewaana aa gaya
dil ne tujhe
phir yaad kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhana
mere dilbar ka
jaane jigar ka
mere dil pe
naam likha hai
ku ku
dil diya hai
maine dil liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
haan kisi se maine pyaar kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna

sab ki nazar ke saamne
duniya se ye kehna hai
haan haan
aa aa a
ha ha aa ha aa
tumse juda ho kar hamen
duniya me hame nahi rehna hai

jaan se bichhad ke kaun jiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
ho mere dilbar ka
jaane jigar ka
mere dil pe
naam likha hai
kuku
dil diya hai
maine dil liya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna
haan kisi se maine pyaar kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna

Today 18th July’2021 is the ninth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ of Rajesh Khanna (29 December 1942- 18 July 2012). He passed away on 18th July’2012 in Mumbai.

On this occasion we pay our tributes to him and remember him with a song from one of his movies.

In this episode of ‘Rajesh Khanna- The Phenomenon – 8’ we look at Rajesh Khanna movies of the year ‘1981’. In the year 1981 following six movies of Rajesh Khanna were released (including Naseeb* where he had a friendly appearance).

In the previous post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 6’ we had discussed how Rajesh Khanna switched on to different roles exploring and introspecting himself and challenging himself in his ‘second innings’. In ‘1981’ he further capitalizes on the success of his movies like ‘Amardeep-1979’,’Thodisi Bewafaai-1980’, and critically acclaimed movies like ‘Red Rose-1980’, ‘Phir Wohi Raat-1980’, and ‘Bandish-1980’.

In ‘1981’ he tasted more success with movies like ‘Dard’, ‘Dhanwan’, ‘Dil E Naadan’, ‘Qudrat’ and ‘Fifty-Fifty’ that had moderate to decent success at the box office and they received critical acclaim.

That all happened forty years ago !

If we go back even further by another ten years, that takes us to ‘1971’. 1971 is behind us by fifty years from now, viz half a century !

That was when Rajesh Khanna ‘era’ was at its zenith. Here is the list of Rajesh Khanna movies released in the year ‘1971’.

We notice that all the above movies had great music as was the norm for Kaka movies.

Coming back to today’s song it is from the movie ‘1981’ movie ‘Fifty-Fifty’.

From the movies of Rajesh Khanna released in 1981 the movies ‘Dard’, ‘Dhanwaan’, ‘Dil E Naadaan’, and ‘Qudrat’ have already been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog. So, we only have this movie ‘Fifty-Fifty’ left to pick a Rajesh Khanna song from.

Tina Munim was the heroine of Rajesh Khanna in this movie, which was their first movie together. It laid the foundation for their further professional and personal chemistry on-screen and off-screen. That way this movie has a special place in the film career of Rajesh Khanna. That is the reason why I have selected a song from this movie for today’s presentation.

‘Fifty-Fifty’ was directed by Shomu Mukherji who also the producer of this movie.

This movie’s star-cast included Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Kader Khan, Ranjeet, Om Shivpuri, Nazir Hussain, Indrani Mukherjee, Anita Guha, Poornima, P. Jairaj, Sundar Taneja, C.S. Dubey, Jankidas, Shaikh, V. Malhotra, Roopesh Kumar, Shashi Kiran, Anu Dhawan, Johny Whisky, Arvind, Miss Nikki, Kumar, Amid, Jagdeep, Mushtaq, Maruti, Bhagwan Dada, Kamrana, Amar Nath, Mangal Singh, Shyam, Vikram Sharma, Miss Neelu, Master Sakha, Baby Pinky, Teerath and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 15.10.1981.

“Fifty-Fifty” had seven songs including one three-part song. Lyrics for all the songs were written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

In today’s song Rajesh Khanna is lip-syncing in the voice of Amit Kumar while Tina Munim lip-syncs in the voice of Asha Bhonsle.

Some other artists too can be seen in the picturisation of this Marathi folk dance song.

Let us now enjoy today’s song where Kaka can be seen performing with trademark jigs. 😊

Hullo Atuldom

Over the last few days we have had some very wordy posts- wordy in terms of the write up and also length of the song/s. None of these posts were boring, they were educative and informative.

Nahmji’s post was a lesson on Ramadan, Hajj, Umrah, and the pilgrimages to Makka and Madinah and also the protocols being followed in these times of the Pandemic.

This post of Atulji spoke of “Covid 19: Virus and treatment Simplified” as our Avinashji has said in the comments to the post.

In between the two posts we had one by our in-house encyclopedia on his disciplined habits of making handwritten notes about the movies he had seen. In the post he has written a point to which even I subscribe to “Depending on the age of the person, the period of ‘old films’ differs. For an young man of, say 20-25 years old films may mean films which came in the 80’s and 90’s. For people of 30-40 years, films of the 6o’s and 70’s are old films. For people of 45-60 years of age, old films are from the 50’s. Only people in the age bracket of 65 to say 80/85, it is films of the 30’s and 40’s which are old films!”

In addition I was going to mention that the meaning of entertainment and content of the films made in each era reflects the current social scene, problems, and aspirations of the younger generation. This too Guruji has spoken about in this post yesterday.

I have always seen movies with the intention of getting entertained and I love it when there is no logic in what is shown on the Silver-Screen. That is why I like the “RH ka group” and “two jyothis emanating from the eyes of an idol and giving vision to a blind lady” scenes. Similarly I like it when the doctors on-screen say “isko dawa ki nahin dua ki zaroorat hai”. I am sure the medical fraternity must be squirming in their seats when they see the doctors mouthing these words. Same goes for the Police, they are always shown to arrive late at scenes of crime unless the lead actors are playing the cop. But we will focus on the cops of Indian movies in a different post.

The song with this post sees the heroine playing a doctor. She is the resident Doctor who does her rounds, checks on all the patients and smiles lovingly at each one of them (and that should be enough to cure half her patients as her smile is high-voltage). One of her patients has lost his memory in some accident (regular feature in all Indian Movies) and Dr. Sushma (Madhuri Dixit) not only takes care of him but also falls in love with Krishna (name given to the character played by Aditya Pancholi by the hospital) and marries him. Later, the doctor’s friendly Inspector Ranjit Kapoor (Suresh Oberoi) warns her that her husband was set to kill her before the accident and her life may be in danger if he regains his memory. Krishna regains his memory when he has another accident (again normal for Indian Movies) and he again tries to kill the Doctor accusing her of being the cause of his sister’s death. Then the movie follows the usual path of clearing misunderstandings and All Is Well in the end.

This was the plot of “Sailaab” which released 31 years ago in August of 1990. It was a remake of a 1988 Tamil movie which I have seen in the open-air auditorium of the colony where I had lived in the initial years of my married life. “Sailaab” was produced by Surendra Jain and directed by Deepak Balraj Vij. Bappi Lahiri was the music composer of songs written by Javed Akhtar and Anjaan. The playback singers used were Anupama Deshpanse, Amit Kumar, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Sudesh Bhonsle, Asha Bhonsle, and someone called Mangal Singh. The cast comprised of Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Pancholi, Suresh Oberoi, supported by Anand Balraj, Shafi Inamdar, Om Shivpuri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, C S Dubey, Sahila Chadda, Jamuna, Shammi, T.P. Jain etc. I have seen climax of “Sailaab” and must say that it was edge-of-seat experience. The most popular song of this movie won Saroj Khan a Filmfare award for best choreography.

We are having this song to wish Madhuri on her birthday. I don’t think this popular actress of over 70 films needs any introduction. Neither do I need to say that she is a recipient of 6 Filmfare awards and also been awarded the PadmaShri by the government of India in 2008. She made her debut in a Rajshree Productions movie in 1984 and was repeated by the production house in “Hum Aapke Hain Kaun”(1994) a movie that ran to packed houses for 200 days. She has co-starred all the actors (male and female) of the ’80s and ’90s. Then she got married and settled into domestic bliss for a few years and returned with Yashraj films “Aaja Nachle” in 2007. Since then we see her intermittently on-screen and being appreciated for the wide range of characters that she is playing. We also see her on television judging Dance Reality shows.

On to today’s song which is sung by Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. It is written by Javed Akhtar. Going by the available video it looks like the song plays in parts and these have been uploaded as one whole. This song is almost similar to “tumse milke aisa laga tumse milke” from “Parinda”.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 106 # Tribute to Music Director Shankar #
——————————————————————————————–

Today 15th October is (15.10.1922) is ninety-eighth Birth Anniversary of the genius music director Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi or known popularly as Shankar of Shankar-Jaikishan duo.

He was born on 15th October’1922 at Hyderabad Deccan in the then state of Hyderabad.
And left this mortal world at the age of sixty-four on 26th April’1986 at Bombay.

As a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the 1977 movie ‘Duniyaadaari’.

One beautiful song from this movie has been posted on the blog on 15th October’2012 which was ‘naao kaaghaz ki gehraa hai paani’ …

As we are all aware the golden period of Shankar-Jaikishan was already over as the HFM embarked in the decade of seventies. The lot of R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and many others were already producing chart burster music that was getting popular among the masses.

I would like to reproduce the ‘text’ here what Atul ji had said about Shankar-Jaikishan and the ending of their ‘era’ in his article while posting the first song of this movie ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’.

Shankar Jaikishan, the most dominant music directors during the golden era of Hindi movie music ruled the roost for two decades from 1949 to 1968 till R D Burman rose like a meteor and changed the rules of the game.

Many other developments took place during that time. One of those developments was that Jaikishan died in 1970 and that way the Shankar Jaikishan jodi was physically separated. Moreover, “Mera Naam Joker” (1970) flopped and after that Raj Kapoor made up his mind to overhaul his musical team making a clen break from his tried and trusted musical team of the past two decades.

Shankar continued to compose music under the name of Shankar Jaikishan. But the time passed, assignments from top banners gradually dried up and Shankar ended up composing music for lesser banners. His songs from mid 1970s onwards were not quite as popular as the music of his heydays.

Nevertheless, Shankar composed some memorable songs even in his second innings as a solo music director, even if they are not as well-known as the music of his earlier decades.

Today’s movie is one such movie whose songs are quite nice and were popular I think (since I have not watched this movie) and other notable movies to mention I think is ‘Sanyaasi-1975’ whose songs were heard everywhere on radio and loudspeakers. Songs of ‘Resham Ki Dori-1974’ were also nice songs if we consider them as composed by Shankar solely.

In the previous month while paying our tributes to Jaikishan on his Remembrance Day I had mentioned about the year 1971 and had wrote that; -“Shankar Jaikishan ruled the music charts in 1971 with their ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhaana’ ranking top of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list. ”

In 1971 Shankar Jaikishan composed music for as many as seventeen movies out of 115 released movies that year. Moreover there was an un-released movie as well viz. ‘Bombay Talkie-1971’ making it a total of eighteen movies for the year for Shankar Jaikishan.

That was for 1971. Let us now have a look on the number of movies in which the name of Shankar-Jaikishan appeared as Music Director from 1972 to till 1977.
(we will again have a look on their filmography from 1978 to 1986 in future posts).

Let us now enjoy today’s song … On screen Asrani and Aruna Irani are performing and lip syncing the song in the voices of Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle respectively.

The song was embedded deep in my subconscious memory and I had forgotten about it. It was only during last year when I was in Kenya that at some instance I broke into humming (singing could also be the correct word? 😊 ). After that I looked for its details and got to know that it is from this movie ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’.

Let us now enjoy this song and pay our tributes to the genius music director Shankar today. I hope you will enjoy today’s song …

I would also request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

(Note: – for those interested to watch this movie, it is slated for premier on ‘YouTube’ on 31.10.2020)

A career that almost wasn’t at one time. His father, himself at the head of a famous film production company, did not want his own son to be associated with films and the film world. Maybe a very well intentioned direction to his offspring, knowing all the glittering and the sordid ins and outs of the industry. But then, destiny has its own will and its own ways to propel individuals in particular directions.

We are celebrating 95th anniversary of birth of one of the maestros of melody in the world of Hindi film music. Madan Mohan was just 51 when he left us in 1975. The world of film music is so much more richer that he was here and composed so many memorable ghazals and songs – from 1951 to 1975. The world of music is also so much more poorer, because he left us so young. One can never say with certainty about what could have been. But yes, one would surely feel – had he lived longer. . .

Way back in 1947-48, it was not that the young Madan was completely cut off from the film world. Being the son of Rai Bahadur Chunni Lal Kohli, one of the partners at the Filmistan studios, he had a very firsthand exposure to and familiarity with the exciting work that went on in a film studio. He was in any case, musically inclined, very inclined, since his childhood. A very less known piece of anecdotal history was recently discussed at our group get together in Delhi.

His first foray into the world of music actually is as a singer. Ghulam Haider Sb had recorded a duet in the voices Madan Mohan and Lata Mangeshkar, for the iconic film ‘Shaheed’ (1948). It was a children’s song, which was supposed to be picturized on the lead pair, when they were children (in the storyline). The song was recorded and made ready for filming. Before it could be put on the sets, Rai Bahadur Sb got a wind of it, and he prevailed upon Sashadhar Mukherji, who controlled the film production side of the company, to have that song deleted from the storyline. Sadly enough, his writ prevailed, and the song was taken off the film, as well as from the recorded tapes. No recording of this said duet song is available.

Our own Bakhshi ji, in one of his meetings with Sanjeev Kohli, son of Madan Mohan ji, had enquired about this episode and the fate of this very important recording. Sanjeev Kohli confirmed the episode, but also added with regret that even he has not been able to trace out this rare recording. Sanjeev has a lot of rare items available on tape that are connected with his father’s work, but this particular duet he could never trace.

Today, we are introducing a film that probably is the last film to be released, for which music was actively composed by Madan Mohan Sb. The film ‘Veer Zaara’ of 2004 does not count, in the sense that the music for that film has been adapted and arranged using some of the unused melodies that were created by Madan Mohan. The film ‘Chaalbaaz’ was initiated in 1974, while he was still alive, but due to whatever reasons, it could be released only in 1980.

After the release of ‘Mausam’ in 1975, and his passing away in the same year, the following films that carry music by him, got released in later years.

  • ‘Laila Majnu’ (1976)
  • ‘Sharaafat Chhod Di Maine’ (1976)
  • ‘Saahib Bahadur’ (1977)
  • ‘Inspector Eagle’ (1978)
  • ‘Jalan’ (1978)
  • ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1980)

So there is a continued stream of his work getting released, for the five years immediately after his passing away. This would be a very interesting analysis to review his work post 1975. ‘Laila Majnu’, the Rishi Kapoor – Ranjeeta Thakur starrer, is of course well known for its songs. It would be an appealing exercise.

Another very interesting thing about the song being presented today is that the singing voices are of Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle. In an interview (available on YouTube here), Amit Kumar has stated that Madan Mohan was one of the first two music directors who called upon him to sing for them (the other being the duo of Sapan Jagmohan), outside of his singing under the direction of his father, Kishore Kumar. This song is probably Amit Kumar’s first song to be recorded by a music director other than his father.

The film is produced under the banner of Ravi Films, Bombay and is directed by Hari Mehra. The star cast is listed as Deepak Khanna, Jaya Kaushalya, Nadira, Anjana, Imtiaz, Kamal Kapoor, Heeralal, V Gopal, Leela Mishra, Hani Chaya, Atam Prakash, Master Nitin, David, Abhi Bhattacharya, Raj Mehra, and Jairaj. The four songs in this film are written by Yogesh and music, of course, by Madan Mohan.

Recorded sometimes in 1974, but eventually released in the film in 1980, the song is an interesting and somewhat unusual composition. Reading the lyrics, it feels as if the stanzas are almost in free form, and yet the tune that ties them together is very attractive.

The only song that Amit Kumar has sung for Madan Mohan. Listen and enjoy.

Song – Hai Shaam Badi Matwaali  (Chaalbaaz) (1980) Singer – Amit Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Madan Mohan
Amit Kumar + Asha Bhosle

Lyrics (Provided by Peevesie’s Mom)

hai shaam badi matwaali
aur aasmaan pe laali
is laali se rang tera
gulaabi ho gaya
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
hai shaam badi matwaali
aur aasmaan pe laali
iss laali se rang tera
gulaabi ho gaya
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey

aaaaa aaaaaa

aaaaaa aaaaa
sooni sooni raahon mein akeli
main to jaa rahi hoon khoyi khoyi
aise mein apna mujhe banaa le
tujh bin mera aur nahi hai koi
har pal yeh pyar tera
saathi banaa jo mera
jeewan ka sab andhera
kahaan jaane kho gaya
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey

tera aanchal jab lehraaya

chalne lagi hawaa’ein
tera aanchal jab lahraya..aa..aa
tu ne zulfein kya bikhraain
jhukne lagi ghataa’ein
tune zulfein kya bikhraain..ee
oo de kar sapne tum ne apne
rang di meri adaa’ein
de kar sapne tumne apne..ae
tum se har din har pal hum ne
maangi yahi duaa’ein
jeewan ki in raahon mein yoon hi
rakhna tum baahon mein
tere pyar ki is chhaaon mein
dil mera so gaya
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair kareln

hai sham badi matwaali
aur aasman pe laali
iss laali se rang tera gulaabi ho gaya
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey
khuda khair karey

आssss आsssss
आsssss आssss
