#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
# A tribute to Talat Mahmood on his birth anniversary #
——————————————-——————————

Today 24th February’2023 is the ninety-ninth birth anniversary of the legendary singer and actor Talat Mahmood.

He was born on 24th February’1924 and he passed away at the age of seventy-four on 9th May’1988.

As a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the ‘1956’ movie ‘Sati Anusuyaa’.

‘Sati Anusuyaa-1956’ was directed by Dhirubhai Desai for ‘Sharad Prdouctions’. It was produced by Sharad Desai.

It had Sumitra Devi, Manhar Desai, Sulochana, Niranjan Sharma, B.M. Vyas, Sundar, Suryakant, Indira Bansal, Malay Sarkar, Neelkamal, Indira, Jawahar Kaul, Anandkand, Sudarshan Sethi, Kanchanmala, Damayanti Joshi, Prabha Shankar, Sohan Lal, Santosh Kumar, Neena Kumari, Nisha Kumari, Dilip and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.08.1956.

“Sati Anusuyaa-1956” has ten songs written by Bharat Vyas. Music for this movie was composed by Shivram.

Shivram, Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Geeta Dutt, Talat Mahmood, and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

One song from this movie has been posted earlier on the blog on 18.12.2012 which was ‘bade pyaar se milnaa sabse’. Today we present the second song from this movie here.

As mentioned above today we pay tributes to Singer Talat Mahmood and are going to listen to a song sung by him from this movie. This song is a duet song with the other voicebeing Asha Bhonsle. The song also has a chorus.

It is a nice song celebrating ‘coming of basant, the kings of ‘ritus’.

I am unable to identify the actor and actress and other artistes performing on the song.

Let us now listen to this wonderful song from the ‘golden years’ of HFM…

#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————

The song under discussion is from the ‘1952’ movie ‘Paataal Bhairavi’.

“Paataal Bhairavi-1952” was directed by K.V. Reddy for ‘Vijaya Productions, Madras’.

It was produced by Nagi Reddy-Chakrapani.

It had N.T. Ramarao, S.V. Rangarao, C.S.R., Relangi, Balakrishnan, Padmnabhan, Malati, T.G. Kamla, Laxmikantham, Hemlatamma Rao, Girija, Surbi Kamla, Chitti and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.03.1952.

Here is a brief about this movie mentioned by our Respected Shri Arunkumar ji.

PATAAL BHAIRAVI-52 was directed by K. Venkat Reddy and the music was by Ghantasala (Assisted by A Krishnamurthy). Lyrics were by Pt. Indra. There were 9 songs, sung by Talat Mehmood, G M Durrani, Geeta Roy, Kamala Devi and Jikki (P G Krishnaveni).

The story of ‘Pataal Bhairavi’ is a Fantasy, full of drama, dances, Magic, Sword Fights, Heavy costumes, palaces and accompanied by many Trick scenes.
Ramu (N T Rama Rao) is the son of an ordinary gardener, who falls in love with Princess Indumati (Malati) of Ujjain Kingdom. While the Rajmata has no objection, the king does not approve a commoner. So, Ramu decides to become rich and meets a mantrik (S V Ranga Rao) who promises to make him rich in quick-time. Actually, the Mantrik wants to sacrifice Ramu to the Goddess (Girija) to propitiate her and get rich himself.

Ramu comes to know of mantrik’s plan and plays the game in such a way that instead of Ramu, the Mantrik is sacrificed to the Goddess, who appears before Ramu and makes him rich and powerful. Meanwhile, the king is attacked by a big enemy, but Ramu helps the king and defeats the enemy and saves the kingdom. The king is now in his favour and Ramu not only gets married to Indumati but also is declared the heir Apparent to the king’s throne.

There are many trick scenes and sword fights in the film, worth seeing. It is said that actor RANJAN helped the producers in shooting the sword fight scenes.
(The story was once again remade in 1985, with Jeetendra as Ramu, Jayaprada as Indumati and Kader Khan as the Mantrik. Shoma Anand played the Goddess Paataal Bhairavi.)

As mentioned above, this movie has nine songs – all written by Pandit Indra. Music for this movie was composed by Ghantasala.

So far, four songs from ‘Paataal Bhairavi-1952’ have been posted on the blog earlier, as per details given below.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Kahin preet se bhara koi Geeta Dutt, Talat Mahmood 18.12.2012
02 Tan man mera tarse Geeta Dutt 01.05.2013
03 Bichhad gaye jo saathi Talat Mahmood 01.09.2014
04 Prem panthh ko chala musaafir ban kar deewaana Talat Mahmood 14.02.2020

This song is the fifth song from this movie to appear on the blog. It is sung by Geeta Dutt and accompanied by female chorus.

The picturisation of the song shows N.T. Ramarao as a ‘saadhu’ with one sidekick watching the Princess (I guess. And so it should be Malati) and her ‘sahelis’ who have come to the ‘garden’ for ‘phool kaliyaan chun’ne’ 🙂 as the ‘basant ritu’ has arrived…

So, with ‘basant’ already around let us listen to this lovely song in the voice of Geeta Dutt and enjoy this golden oldie…
