‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 6
———————————————————
We move further to the next post in this series. Today’s song is from the ‘1972’ movie ‘Shaahzaadaa’.
‘Shaahzaadaa-1972’ was directed by K. Shankar for ‘Amar Chhaaya, Bombay’. It had Rajesh Khanna, Rakhi, Madan Puri, Veena, Karan Deewan, Pandari Bai, Jairaj, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Gulshan Bawra, Sonu Arora, Badriprasad, Halam, Varlakshami.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.09.1972. This movie had five songs written by Rajinder Krishan. Music for this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.
Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar had given their voices to the songs in this movie. The list of the songs in this movie is as given below and songs posted earlier on the blog have been mentioned with their respective date of posting.
SNo | Song Title | Singer/s | Posted On |
---|---|---|---|
01 | O tere athhroo chun lawaan main | Mohd Rafi | Being discussed today |
02 | Na jaiyyo, chhod ken aa jaiyyo meri raani | Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar | 04.08.2020 |
03 | Rimjhim rimjhim dekho baras rahi hai raat | Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar | 29.12.2010 |
04 | Thokar mein hai meri saaraa zamaanaa | Kishore Kumar | 20.07.2012 |
05 | Pariyon ki nagri se aayaa | Lata Mangeshkar |
From the above list we can see that Lata and Kishore Kumar had two duets and one solo song each, and Mohd Rafi sang only one song in this movie. And that is the subject matter of this series. I am looking for such instances where Rafi Saab had sung only one song in a movie where music is composed by R.D. Burman. In the previous post we saw one such instance with a song from ‘Phir Wohi Raat-1980’.
In both the movies the other song by a male singer is by Kishore Kumar only. And that made me think if there are movies where Rafi Saab had sung majority of songs and Kishore Kumar had sung only one song. Two such movies immediately come to my mind, and incidentally these two are also Kaka movies, ‘Do Raaste-1969’ and ‘Mehboob Ki Mehendi-1971’ where the music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. May be there are more such instances.
We will bring them here in future posts and enjoy them with a song. 😊
Let us now enjoy today’s song sung by Mohd Rafi for Rajesh Khanna in this movie ‘Shaahzaadaa-1972’. Video of this song seems to be unavailable as of now and only the audio is available. Lyrics are by Rajinder Krishan and music is composed by R.D. Burman.

Lyrics
O tere athhroo
ni chun lawaan main
O tere athhroo
chun lawaan main
O tere hothhaan nu haase jaawaan main aen
Chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Arrey chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
O tere athhroo
chun lawaan main
O tere hothhaan nu haase jaawaan main aen
Chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Arrey chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Tu hai behti nadiyaa
Kaam hai tera behna
Sadaa hi chalte rehna
Kisi se kuchh na kehna
Oye hare-bhare kheton ki raani
Tu hai behti nadiyaa
Kaam hai tera behna
Sadaa hi chalte rehna
Kisi se kuchh na kehna
Oye hare-bhare kheton ki raani
Tu to baithhi rahi pyaasi ki pyaasi goriye
O tere athhroo
chun lawaan main
O tere hothhaan nu haase jaawaan main
Arrey chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Aaha chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Ye maana tu akeli
Nahin koyee tera beli
Na koyee saathhi tera
Na teri koyee saheli
Din wo bhi hai aane waala
Ye maana tu akeli
Nahin koyee tera beli
Na koyee saathhi tera
Na teri koyee saheli
Din wo bhi hai aane waala
Mere jaise mil jaayenge
Chauraasi goriye
O tere athhroo
chun lawaan main
O tere hothhaan nu haase jaawaan main ae
Chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Arrey chhod de jawaani mein udaasi goriye
Wo nazar le ke rahi dil

Hullo to all atulites
In the euphoria to celebrate the blogs 10th anniversary with an appropriate post last week I missed out on a few anniversaries, occasions for which I always try and send a special song. I just realised that 18th July is the anniversary of another favourite. So here is a song for the occasion.
But I think, we can have a song featuring one in a movie in which the other is the main lead. The two actors I was thinking of combining are Rajesh Khanna and Sanjeev Kumar.
We missed Sanjeev Kumar’s birthday last week, he would have been 80 years on 9th July. And 18th July, it will be six years since Rajesh Khanna passed away. Both the actors were active around the same period. Both had their distinct styles in acting and also the kind of characters they enacted. They have appeared in about five films together – “Bandhan”, “Aap Ki Kasam”, “Chala Murari Hero Banane”, “Suraag” and I think Rajesh Khanna had a guest appearance in “Ram Tere Kitne Nam” which released about the time Sanjeev Kumar passed away. “Bandhan” was essentially a Rajesh Khanna movie where Sanjeev Kumar had a small role as a lawyer who fights a case for Rajesh Khanna. “Aap Ki Kasam” had Sanjeev Kumar play RK’s friend and neighbour and the eventual cause for the separation of Rk and Mumtaz. I don’t remember much about “Chala Murari Hero Banane” which was a movie about movies made by actor Asrani and I feel both RK and SK might have played themselves i.e. film stars, in guest appearances. That brings us to “Suraag” which is a Sanjeev Kumar movie where Rajesh Khanna is in a guest appearance in a song situation along with Tina Munim.
Remembering Rajesh Khanna with this song from “Suraag” which was produced by Jagmohan Mundhra and directed by Jag Mundhra and Ambrish Sangal. It had Sanjeev Kumar as husband to Gita Siddharath, playing a professor in Criminology and Parikshat Sahni playing a doctor who is the professor’s unmarried friend. Shabana Azmi plays Parikshat Sahni’s wife who is kidnapped on her way to New York. And then the movie’s mystery begins. The movie had music by Bappi Lahiri and written by Kaifi Azmi. The playback singers use in the movie were Mohd. Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Lahiri and Kishore Kumar. Today’s song is a qawwali where Rajesh Khanna is on stage with Tina Munim and Gita Siddharath and Sanjeev Kumar are in the audience. Half way through the song Gita spots Shaban Azmi among the chorus girls and then the chase to find her picks up steam. I have seen this movie ages ago so I don’t remember if the song happens abroad or in India. The movie’s story transports the audience back and forth between India and America.
Here is the song which has Rafi and Asha giving playback alongwith male and female chorus.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 4

This post under this series is not in chronological order as far as my ongoing reminiscences about Rajesh Khanna movies are concerned. But this post fits in this series about Rajesh Khanna. This particular movie “Chakravyooh”(1978) was critically acclaimed for the performance of Rajesh Khanna as also for ‘its offbeat story line’ which was at variance with typical Rajesh Khanna-romantic movies that we were used to.

ARADHANA-1969 is a film which was a turning point for many people. For Rajesh Khanna, it heralded a begining as a Superstar and for Kishore Kumar, it proved to be the begining of ” Kishor Period” in the HFM from 1970 to 1985.

I have felt like writing after many days. Many reasons for the long absence. But I just had to write when I remembered this particular song. First because of the unusual pairing –Rajesh Khanna Reena Roy, second I found that this was a different Naushad song ( I do not know if he has given music to any Rajesh Khanna movie. IMDB says this is the only one) And then lastly it was very popular during my growing up years.

Rajesh Khanna had become the heart throb of millions in late 1960s. This spell lasted till about 1974. During this period, Rajesh Khanna could do no wrong. Whatever he touched turned into gold.

This song is from the film ‘Raaz’, the year is 1967. It is a duet by Mohammed Rafi and Krishna Kalle. It is picturized on the hero Rajesh Khanna and heroine Babita. The composer is the duo Kalyanji Anandji and lyricist is Akhtar Romani. There are two unknown or should I say less known persons connected with this song. The female playback singer and the lyricist. I would have identified Krishna Kalle with the song “meri hasraton ki duniyaa” which is a duet with Rafi from the film “Gaal gulaabi nain sharaabi”, but that was before I heard this duet song from ‘Raaz’. This must be the high point and defining moment in her career where she is getting to sing a song for an ‘A’ grade MD, heroine and Film. This film has a very well known song which is posted here.

The regular visitors to this blog must have noticed that we are seeing more Asha Bhosle songs posted in the blog nowadays than anybody else’s. The reason is that she is heading towards reaching a milestone figure of 1000 songs in the blog. I have been remiss in writing post of Asha Bhosle songs. Let me rectify this. The song I have chosen is my personal favourite. Asha Bhonsle’s solos from “Sujata” and “Bandini” under S D Burman, are a treasure which I knew from early days.

on:Looking at the video of this song adds considerably to my general knowledge about movies. For example, I was not aware that Rajesh Khanna had worked in a movie called “Aurat”(1967) and that too opposite an actress as obscure as Naazima. But then Rajesh Khanna himself was a newcomer those days.

on:“Chhoti Bahu” (1971) is a movie that had Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore in it. I have not seen this movie so I have no idea about the story of this movie, though the title indicated that the movie may have something to do with ladies making sacrifices for the family honour etc.
