Today’s song is from an obscure C grade action film Chini Jadugar-1959.

The film was made under the banner of Noshirwan Movietone, Bombay, – possibly owned by the director of this film – Noshir Engineer. He was also its Producer. He was a specialist director of action/stunt/costume films. He directed 7 films, starting with the film Inteqam-1947. The came Shamsheerbaz-53,Carnival Queen-55, Diler Daku-57, Circus Queen-59, Chini Jadugar-59 and lastly it was Noor Mahal-1965, In 5 of these films the MD was Shafi M Nagari.

The composer for the film Chini Jadugar-59 was ‘Shafi M. Nagri’. It was a riddle. Who was this Shafi Nagri ? In a few films, his name also appeared as Shafi Nagri. I was tired of searching for information in books and on the Internet, about this Shafi. Finally, the riddle was solved by Shri Girdharilal ji Vishwakarma, the famous Historian and Collector of songs. He explained that this person was none other than Shafi mohd. Nagri -popularly known as Mohd. Shafi !

Composer Mohd. Shafi ( 25-12-1925 to 30-4-1980 ) was one of those talented artistes of Hindi Film Music who was only used by others and never got enough credit for his work.He is honoured as “The original Arranger” in the industry. He was an excellent Sitar player. He started with the Imperial Film company-where he played Bulbul Tarang. In 1937 he went to Calcutta, joined New Theatres and played Sitar in films Kapal Kundala-39 and Aandhi-40, as an assistant to Pankaj Mullick and K.C.Dey. He played the sitar in the film “Ujala”-42. In this film, the Hero-Prithviraj kapoor was shown as a Sitar player, hence the expertise of Shafi was fully utilised in this film.

Starting with the film ‘Haqdaar’-46, he gave music to 19 Hindi films and 2 Marathi films. He worked with Naushad, as his assistant and Arranger, for 14 years. He was considered a ‘Dada’ in Background music. He gave Background music to about 70 films( for Naushad and others). For Mughal E Azam, K.Asif used to send his personal car to fetch him to studio. It was said that Shafi gave the first break to Suman Hemmadi(Kalyanpur) in Mangu-54 and Hemlata in the unreleased film Iraada.

Shafi had bought his first car when he was just 15 year old. He had a posh flat in Shivaji Park area of Dadar in Bombay. In the end , everything was gone.He had helped families of Shakeel Badayuni and Ghulam Mohammed after their deaths. However in his last difficult days , except Rafi, no one came for his help. In the final few months, his memory had gone. His Begum ruefully said,” Good that he does not remember anything. All took his advantage and gave him nothing. There were more things to forget than to remember ! ”

It is said that the entire music of Sohni Mahiwal-58 was done by him. Naushad was sick during this period and did not attend even one recording. “Do hanson ka joda” and “Dhoondo dhoondo re saajna” Gunga Jamuna-61 were his creations. He used to give tunes to many composers too-whoever asked for help.

It is believed that Shafi also acted in 2 films, namely Jungi Jawan-43 and Diler Detective-48. As a MD, he gave music to 19 films and composed 125 songs.

Film Chini jadugar-1959 had music by Shafi M Nagari. Now, who is this composer ? A search on HFGK gives names of films for him, namely Krishna Kanhaiya-52, Shamsheerbaz-53, Sher dil-54, Carnival Queen-55, Diler Daku-57, Circus Queen-59 and Chini Jadugar-59. Well known Music expert and collector Shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji has confirmed that it is none other than composer Mohd. Shafi only. In this name he gave music to 7 films and composed 48 songs.

During the Studio system and later on, few known MDs too availed of this trick to find a way out of the rules. For example, Snehal Bhatkar used different names to give music as long as he worked in HMV. C.Ramchandra used the name Annasaheb or P Ramakant when giving music to action/stunt films, Lata Mangeshkar gave music in the name of Anandghan, Hafiz Khan Mastana used the alias Gunjan and S D Batish used Nirmal Kumar. So, it is no wonder that while assisting Naushad for so many years, Mohd. Shafi used an alias for giving music to outside films.

The cast of the film Chini Jadugar consisted of Kamran, Krishnakumari,Shaikh, Habeeb,Vasantrao pehelwan, Ismail,Rajni, Moti (Dog), Ustad (Horse) and many others. Kamran was the Hero. Kamran khan Rizvi was a regular Stunt Hero and I used to enjoy his films. He started his film career with Baghi Sipahi-36, a film made by East India Film Co, Calcutta. A.R.Kardar was its Director. Later on Kamran came to Bombay, along with kardar, who was his Patron for quite some time.

Hero Kamran and Heroine Nazi was a popular combination of 12 stunt films, those days. Kamran worked in 52 films. In 1963, film Bachpan was being directed by Nazar Ahmed. He had some disputes with the Producer and he left the film midway. The Debutant Hero Salim ( father of actor Salman Khan) and Debutant Heroine Menaka ( Eldest sister of Daisy and Honey Irani…all daughters of Mrs. P.N. Irani, a greedy mother, who spoiled the childhood of her children for money) were in trouble. Kamran stepped in and completed the film by directing the balance part, without taking any money. During this period, he fell in love with Menaka and they got married. Her film career ended there only. They had one son and one daughter ( Actor, compere, Director Sajid Khan and famous Choreographer and Director Farah khan).

Kamran stopped getting Hero’s roles, as stunt films were not being made to that extent in the 70s and later period. He decided to become producer and Director. This proved to be his nemesis. He failed miserably, lost everything and became an alcoholic. He divorced Menaka, who worked as a Housekeeper in a 5 star hotel (Hotel Sea Rock) and he lived in his big flat in Versova with 2 children but no money. He died in 1985.

Kamran directed 11 films from Panch Ratan-65 to Ban Manush-80. His last film as an actor was Nastik-83.

In the cast there is the name of an actor, Shaikh. Sheikh was a Comedy actor in the 40s,50s and the 60s. He has acted in 170 films,as per Muvyz stats. He sang 10 songs in 7 films as per HFGK (Daulat ki duniya-47, Fifty Fifty-UR, Nakli Baap-49, Jiya Raja-49, Dushman-50, Hatimtai-56 and Naagmani-57).

He was essentially a B and C grade film comedian, so his name is not known to most people. Sanjeev Narvekar’s book, “Eena meena deeka” gives very little information about him. In his hey-days, he was popular in a class of people who were regulars of stunt, fantasy and action films. He was a fixture in almost all Wadia films. He was the main singer in the iconic qawali, “Humen to loot liya milke husn walon ne ‘ from the film Al Hilal-58. (It was the 5000th song on this Blog)

He had directed 2 films, Shahnaaz-48 and Mr.Toofan-63. He started his career in Hindi films with Pakke badmash-39. Before that he had acted in a Marathi film “Netaji Palkar-39″by Bhalji Pendharkar (info from CITWF). His last film was Aadamkhor-85. No information is available on his life anywhere.

Today’s song is a duet, sung by S.Balbir and Suhasini Kolhapure. She sang only 6 songs in 5 films like Sabse bada Rupiah-55, Shahi bazar-57, Chini Jadugar-59, Laalach-60 and Saaya-61., before disappearing without a trace.

With this song, film Chini Jadugar-59 makes a Debut on the Blog.

Ye rut haseen ye raahen
ye jawaan jawaan nigaahen
mehki hawaayen

dil kyun machal na jaaye
Ye rut haseen ye raahen

aankhon mein hai rang suhaane
honthon pe naye afsaane
ae kaash yahin thham jaayen
yoon pyaar ki ye mastaani
chhoote na saath
chhoote na haath
aao sapan ??yen
Ye rut haseen ye raahen

main phool agar ban jaaun
main bhanwra ban ke gaaun
ban jaaun agar main titli
main ban ke hawa lahraaun
aayi bahaar laayi qaraar
??yen
Ye rut haseen ye raahen

udte huye kaale baadal
lehraata hua ye aanchal
nazron mein anokhi masti
dil mein hai niraali halchal
jaage umang naache pawan
do dil jo muskuraayen
Ye rut haseen ye raahen

The purpose of the above posts was to take a look on the collaboration of Sahir Ludhianvi as Lyricist with various music directors, and to discuss a song composed by the respective music director from a movie which has so far not been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog.

In the ‘one-movie collaboration’ three movies were eligible viz. ‘Aazaadi Ki Raah Pe-1948’ (MD-G.D. Kapoor), ‘Bhaai Ho To Aisa-1972’ (MD-Sonik Omi) and ‘Dhanwaan-1981’ (MD- Hridaynath Mangeshkar).
Sahir wrote four songs for ‘Aazaadi Ki Raah Pe-1948’ of which only one has been posted on the blog earlier. The remaining three songs have not been traced or are unavailable as of now.
From ‘Bhaai Ho To Aisa-1972’ only one song had been posted earlier but ‘Dhanwaan-1981’ was only one short of Yippeeee, so here we took a song composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar from ‘Dhanwaan-1981’ and it was posted on 26.10.2020.

Moving forward we covered another song from the ‘one movie collaboration’ where the movie ‘Bhaai Ho To Aisa-1972’ was having only one song posted since 24.01.2009.

In the third post we discussed the ‘two-movies collaboration’ with a song from music director Kalyanji-Anandji from ‘Nanha Farishta-1969’ as it was the oldest movie not ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog from this ‘collaboration’. (Here in this scenario, we were also having songs composed by Ravindra Jain from the movie ‘Ham Tere Aashiq Hain-1979’ to be posted on the blog.)

The ‘three-movies collaboration’ of Sahir was only with music director Madan Mohan and all the songs of this ‘collaboration’ were already covered on the blog. So, we moved to the ‘four-movies collaboration’ where we had an opportunity to cover songs composed by R.D. Burman. Out of the four movies of ‘Sahir-Pancham collaboration’, we had two movies viz. ‘Joshilaa-1973’ and ‘The Burning Train-1980’ of which songs were available to be posted. We covered a song from ‘Joshilaa-1973’ as it was the oldest movie pending.

In the ‘five-movies collaboration’ we had two music directors viz. O.P. Nayyar and Khayyam Saab.
All songs composed by O.P. Nayyar had already been covered on the blog long back and we had only one movie ‘Chambal Ki Kasam-1979’ where music was composed by Khayyam Saab, and few of its songs were remaining to be posted. In the post no.5, we discussed a song from ‘Chambal Ki Kasam-1979’.

We did not have any ‘six-movies collaboration’, so we move to ‘seven-movies collaboration’ where we had Roshan and Laxmikant-Pyarelal collaborating with Sahir for seven movies each.
But in this case also we first discussed a song from a debutant movie which was so far not launched on the blog. This movie was ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do-1982’ where Sahir Ludhianvi had written lyrics for two songs and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. We covered a song from this movie in the sixth post under this series.

In the next article we again took a song from the above collaboration from the movie ‘Jaagriti-1977’ which was already present on the blog.

After this ‘seven-movie collaboration’, we were left with three great collaborations of Sahir Ludhianvi with music directors N. Datta, S.D. Burman and Ravi. All these were more than ‘ten-movies collaborations’.

In the eighth post we discussed the Sahir-N. Datta collaboration for seventeen movies with a song from ‘Chehre Pe Chehra-1980’.

Next collaboration as per the number of movies was eighteen movies of Sahir-S.D. Burman collaboration.

From this collaboration three songs of ‘Laal Kunwar’ are pending to be covered, but these songs are not available and it seems that they were difficult to find. We are not concluding them as ‘lost’ hoping that someday somebody will come up with their links.

However, one ‘snippet’ of ‘verses’ from ‘Pyaasaa-1957’ was available to covered which we left to be covered on a ‘special day’ with ‘special post’.

Here we move on to the next ‘big collaboration’ which is ‘Sahir Ludhianvi and music director Ravi’. They collaborated in nineteen movies. In the ninth post we took a song from the oldest movie pending on the blog which was ‘Paisaa Ya Pyaar-1969’ because one song from ‘Gumraah-1963’ has not been traced till date and we hope that this will also be found some day or other in the future.

Taking ‘cinematic liberty 😊’ again, in the tenth post, we covered a beautiful bhajan composed by Music Director Ravi from the movie ‘Chingaari-1971/1989’. And we also took a look at the filmography of ‘Sahir-Ravi collaboration’.

In this series we tried to bring on board songs by various music directors that were yet to be posted on the blog.

And after the last post i.e., post no. 10 of 04.03.2021 the list of remaining Sahir songs on the blog is as given below;

Sno Name of the Movie Year Music Director Remaining songs
1 Aazadi Ki Raah Pe 1948 G.D. Kapoor 3
7 Laal Kunwar 1952 S.D. Burman 3
53 Dilli Ka Daada 1962 N. Dutta 1
58 Gumraah 1963 Ravi 1
78 Nanha Farishta 1969 Kalyanji – Anandji 2
79 Paisaa Ya Pyaar 1969 Ravi 1
85 Bhaai Ho To Aisa 1972 Sonik Omi 3
91 Mehmaan 1973 Ravi 2
101 Jaagriti 1977 Laxmikant-Pyarelal 2
104 Hum Tere Aashiq Hain 1979 Ravindra Jain 5
106 Chambal Ki Qasam 1979 Khayyam 2
107 Chehre Pe Chehra 1980 N. Dutta 4
109 The Burning Train 1980 R.D. Burman 2
112 Jiyo Aur Jeene Do 1982 Laxmikant-Pyarelal 1
115 Chingaari 1989 Ravi 2

Readers might have noted that while discussing the songs composed by various music directors, we have so far not covered a song composed by music director Ravindra Jain.
So, here in this post today, we are discussing a song composed by him from the movie ‘Ham Tere Aashiq Hain-1979’ of which only one song has been posted so far on 27.06.2019 on the blog.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. It is lip synced on screen by Hema Malini and Jeetendra respectively.

The words of the song are interesting in the context of this series ‘planned’ by me and the ‘goal’ to be achieved 😊
But still as on today I cannot say ‘maar liyaa maidaan’ as the song goes … though I can say ‘ghodaa-maidaan door nahin’ 😊 and only readers can tell ‘kaisaa rahaa palaan’ 😊 ‘badhhiyaa rahaa ya nahin’ 😊

I leave it here for the song to be enjoyed by readers (a lesser heard song though, may be because the movie was also not successful, I think) …

As a parting gift for today, here is the list of Sahir filmography with respect to the songs already posted on the blog excluding the today’s song; (readers can well guess here ‘what the ‘goal’ is. If it is achieved well and good, and even if it is not achieved, I am satisfied that I tried my best to do something … now leaving it to the ‘powers’ beyond my control 😊)
(I am thankful to Atul ji and Sudhir ji for giving me this opportunity to do this write-ups and also I am thankful to all readers of this blog who have read this posts and given their feedback with comments) …

Let us now enjoy this song. It is a light hearted song but Sahir still finds opportunities to slip in comments about social malpractices viz jaat paat, naslwaad, rang bhed etc. etc.

Blog Day : 4178 Post No. : 15354

Yesterday (25 december 2019) was the birth centenary of Naushad (25 december 1919- 5 May 2006). The special occasion called for a post but my internet connection let me down and that day ended up becoming a dot day- the third such day in the year.

According to my calculations Naushad had composed music for 601 songs in 64 Hindi movies.

61 out of these 64 movies are represented in the blog. The first four movies where Naushad was the music director are “Prem Nagar”(1940), “Darshan”(1941), “Maala”(1941) and “Nayi Duniya” (1942). All available songs of these movies are covered in the blog but still some songs (unavailale as of now) are not posted so these movies are unYIPPEED. After that, each and every Naushad movie beginning from “Sharda”(1942) till “Ganwaar”(1970) are already YIPPEED in the blog ! Moreover, two more movies viz “Aaina”(1974) and “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) are also YIPPEED.

The only Naushad movies (apart from the four movies of 1940s), whose songs are not fully covered in the blog are “Paakeeza”(1971), “Taangewaala”(1972), “My Friend”(1974), “Sunahra Sansaar”(1975), “Chambal Ki Raani”(1979), “Love and God”(1986), “Aawaaz De kahaan Hai”(1990), “Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993), “Guddu”(1995) and “Taj Mahal”(2005).

Overall 535 out of 601 Naushad compositions are already showcased in the blog.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Taangewaala”(1972). This song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised as a Tanga song, with Rajendra Kumar playing the Taangewaala and driving the taanga holding a small child his arms. It is very risky, according to present day safety standards. Rajendra Kumar would get fined heavily and his tonga driver licence cancelled by traffic police if he was to operate in present day India. 🙂

This song is an appropriate song for the occasion because Rafi too had his birth anniversary on 24 december, one day prior to Naushad’s birth anniversary.

Song-Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye(Taangewaala)(1972) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
daada daan
daadaa daan
daada daan
daadaa daan

chhail chhabeela ghhoda hai
chaal chale hai saajan ki
chhail chhabeela ghhoda hai
chaal chale hai saajan ki
peechhe peechhe taanga hai
doli jaise dulhan ki
peechhe peechhe taanga hai
doli jaise dulhan ki
zaalim yoon lehraaye ke jaise
koi sharaabi jaaye ae ae
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
kaaka jee
o maamaa jee
ho zara bach ke
ho zara hatt ke

mandir koi jaata hai
masjid se koi aata hai
mandir koi jaata hai
masjid se koi aata hai
ye dilwaala sabko hi
manzil tak pahunchaata hai
ho ye dilwaala sabko hi
manzil tak pahunchaata hai
taanga mera pyaar bhara dil
jo chaahe aa jaaye
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
hurr
ho ho

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 47
——————————————————————————————

When one discussed a movie of 1940s, one often assums by default that it must be a “boring” movie, one which may not hold the interest of later generation movie goers. And when one finds that this movie has Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles, people who have seen them in character roles may consider dropping the idea of watching the movie.

But what if I tell you that this movie from 1941 is a laugh riot ? And that this movie was the original inspiration of “Padosan”(1968) ? I am sure that people will suddenly get interested in knowing more about this movie.

“Jhoola”(1941) was directed by Gyan Mukherji for Bombay Talkies, Bombay. This movie, a “social” movie had Leela Chitnis, Ahok Kumar, Shah Nawaz, V H Desai, Mumtaz Ali, Karuna Devi, Shahzadi, Rajkumari Shukla, Meenu Cooper, M A Aziz, Kaazi, Master Laxman, Leeladhar Sharma, Iqbal Bai, B M Dixit, Jyoti, Dulaari, Nana Palsikar etc in it.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Five of these songs have been covered in the past. This movie has a song that goes Ek chatur naar karkar singaar . Yes, I mentioned that this movie is the original source for “Padosan”(1968) and this song is the inspiration of that famous “Padosan”(1968) Kishore Kumar Manna dey laugh riot.

If “Padosan”(1968) had Mehmood then “Jhoola”(1941) had his father Mumtaz Ali lip syncing the wonderful stage dance song Main to Dilli se dulhan laayaa re.

“Jhoola”(1941) had made its debut in the blog on 26 september 2009, viz exactly ten years ago, with the evergreen song Chali re chali re meri naao chali re .

This day that year ten years ago, the blog was at its usual prolific best. Six songs from six different movies were covered in the blog on that day. Five out of six of those movies have already been covered in the blog. “Jhoola”(1941) remains the only un YIPPEED movie from that day.

Here are the details of the songs that were discussed on 26 september 2009:

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Tera mujhse hai pahle ka naata koi Aa Gale Lag Jaa-1973 All Songs covered in the blog
Har aas ashqbaar hai Kinaare Kinaare-1963 All Songs covered in the blog
Dekha naa jaaye socha naa jaaye Mr India-1961 All Songs covered in the blog
Kahaan chhod ke chalaa hai tu Anjaan-1956 All Songs covered in the blog
De bhi chuke ham dil nazraana dil kaa Jaal-1952 All Songs covered in the blog
Chali re chali meri naao chali re Jhoola-1941 05 of 11 songs covered

According to HFGK, the movie had 12 songs. I find that the song Ek chatur naar karkar singaar does not find mention if HFGK. To compensate for that, the song under discussion today gets mentionc twice (as song number 6 and 11). So the count of songs in the movie remains accurate, viz 12.

Today, as part of Blog ten year challenge, here is another song from “Jhoola”(1941). Like the song that was covered ten years ago, this song too is a duet sung by Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis. In the song ten years ago, the leading duo were riding a boat, here they ride a ghodagaadi, and while doing so, Ashok Kumar makes gentle 1940s style passes on Leela Chitnis, asking the love letter back. Leela Chitnis teases him back 1940s style responds 1940s style viz.

Dekho kah doongi
Haan haan dekho kah doongi
Tumhaare man ki batiyaan

and subsequently

Hamri gali mein dekho
Tum kal se aana chhodo
Varna hansengi hamaari sakhiyaan

The lyrics by Kavi Pradeep are quite cute and romantic. The romantic song, in which both make paasses at each other must have been quite a rage in those pre independence days.

Music is composed by Saraswati Devi.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

“Do Dilon Ki Daastaan”(1966) was directed by Raj Khosla for Deep and Pradeep Productions, Bombay, the home production of Pradeep Kumar. The movie had Vyjyanti Mala, Pradeep Kumar, Om Prakash, Shashikala, Rehman, B Nandi, Jagdeep, Nazeer Hussain, Tuntun etc in it.

This “social” movie had eight songs in it. Six of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the seventh song from “Do Dilon Ki Daastaan”(1966) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Only the audio of this song is available. My guess is that this song was picturised as a ghoda gaadi song, and the lip syncer is addressing the ghoda in this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Chal beta left chal beta right(Do Dilon Ki Daastaan)(1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-O P Nayyar

Missing Films of 1960s – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We are now getting close to the end of 1962. The next film from that year which is being introduced today is ‘Sher Khan’. The film and its songs are available on the internet, and have been for some time now. Apparently,  we just did not get around to bringing up here, the songs from this film. Probably it is the obscurity of the film and its title, and the level of unfamiliarity that the team may have with this film and its songs. With music by SN Tripathi, the songs of this film are very good. Once we get to hear them, then the mind wonders – where have these been hiding so far. But anyway, we are getting to them now, and that is a good thing.
