Hullo Atuldom
7th April 2018 is the 76th birthday of Ravi Kapoor- unbelievable. He has been around in the entertainment industry/ Bollywood since 1959 i.e. close to 60 years. WOW!!! That is a really long time. And we are fans of his and know him as JEETENDRA.
His first on-screen appearance was in V.Shantaram’s “Navrang” as Sandhya’s character’s double. Post that he got his first major break in Shantaram’s “Geet Gaya Pattharo ne”. 1967 saw him in diametrically different avatars in “Gunahon ka Devta” and “Farz”—and 51 years after “Farz” the epithet of “Jumping Jack” still reminds us of Jeetuji and his vigorous dancing prowess. The T-shirt and white shoes became his trademark and suited his lean frame. He has appeared in only about 200 films of which only 80 or so were made-in-south movies most of them remakes of successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. He was the preferred North-Indian star of that era as far as T. Rama Rao, L.V. Prasad, Rama Naidu and such other South Indian filmmakers were concerned. But there was another set of films that had him in completely subdued character as in “Parichay”, “Mere Humsafar”, “Khushboo”, “Kinara”, “Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke” and a long list of other movies.
He was loved by the audiences with any heroine he was paired right from Rajshree, Babita, Mala Sinha, Asha Parekh, Nanda and Mumtaz to the next set of ladies like Hema Malini, Rekha, Leena Chandavarkar, Reena Roy, Moushumi, and a few movies with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh and finally Sridevi and JayaPrada.
The above list looks like the roster of the heroines of the film industry. The only name that doesn’t feature in that list is that of Smita Patil as the only movie that featured the two, Smita was opposite to Dharamendra. And the list doesn’t name Rakhee, Jaya Bhadhuri (Bachchan), Bindiya Goswami, Radha, Bhanupriya, Madhavi, Meenakshi Seshadri, Madhuri Dixit etc. as they did only one or two movies each with Jeetuji.:) Phew! That is one long list. I am sure there are other heroines whose names are missing here. 🙂
As far as his acting style is concerned he must have been good to have lasted this long. I am sure people will say that he has survived on his dancing abilities alone, but then his movies with Gulzar at the helm didn’t have any dancing. He was a complete package of n actor who was comfortable with action, emotion, just standing and singing; dancing and singing.
His last silver screen appearance was in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” in the party song. He also produced a few movies, a business which is being looked after by his able daughter Ekta.
Today on his birthday I thought of all the possible songs and zeroed in on a song that is heard very often on the radio– mostly Vividh Bharathi, my staple source of film songs for years. It is from the 1976 released, L.V. Prasad produced “Udhar Ka Sindoor”. It was a remake of the Telugu movie “Manasullu Devudu”. The cast was headed by Jeetendra, Reena Roy and Asha Parekh with Prema Narayan, Asrani, Dheeraj Kumar, Manju Bansal (Asrani), Om Shivpuri and Urmila Bhat in supporting cast.
Just as a matter of trivia, here I feel like mentioning that Asha Parekh is the same age as Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and has co-starred as heroine to Jeetuji and RK but has been AB’s Bhabhi (in movies). Also, another point of interest which should be noted is Asha Parekh’s debut as heroine came in 1959 in “Dil Deke Dekho” and Jeetuji first appeared on-screen in 1959 in “Navrang” but as a character’s double.
Coming back to the movie “Udhar Ka Sindoor” (I sat through it to know what the movie was all about). It is a movie full of emotion- love for sister, love and gratitude towards foster-father; pinning to reunite with a lost sister; some drama on finding the sister, a groom for the foster-sister and then some action towards the end as by then the hero has become an inspector on the chase of a gang that forges currency. As it so happens the leader of the gang is the foster-brother who has to be pulled up for all the wrongs that he has committed including raping the lost-sister. That is why I said it was a movie full of EMOTIONS. And since there are two heroines, who happen to be sisters, there is a dose of sacrificing the hero for one another thrown in for good measure :). The hero is the lucky person as he gets to sing romantic songs with one sister and get married to the other and be worshipped by her since he married her despite her blindness.
Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rajesh Roshan was the music director.
