Truly, a man for all seasons, and a voice for all reasons. A person like him comes maybe once in a millennia. And a voice like his is probably a unique manifestation of God’s own will, maybe once in the sustenance of an entire creation. It seems as if the poet Iqbaal wrote his famous couplet for him, and him alone.

I am not really qualified to talk at length about Mohammed Rafi. I was lucky to be growing up during the 60s when the best of our music was all around me. Rafi was here, there and everywhere. He ruled the airwaves.

Today (31 july 2013) is Mumtaz’s 66 th birth anniversary. I find it an interesting coincidence that her peak in Hindi movies coincided with the peak of Rajesh Khanna. Mumtaz bowed out of movie industry just as Rajesh Khanna lost his crown in mid 1970s.

Today (31 july 2013) is the 33rd death anniversary of Rafi(24 december 1924- 31 july 1980). Today is the day when we pay our heartfelt tribute to him. It is not that we do not remember him on the other days of the year except his anniversaries. Far from it. We in this blog have averaged more that one Rafi song a day for the five years and more that this blog has been in existence. In other words, we remember him everyday. He is in our thoughts everyday in almost every waking hours and sometimes in our sleeping hours as well in our dreams.

Today is the Death Anniversary of India’s most versatile singer Mohammed Rafi saab. Thanks to his evergreen songs, we still feel his presence amongst us. In last so many years India has not produced a single singer of Rafi’s calibre. One can not just say that those times were different and there was hardly any competition to him. Even in those days there was competition, but a healthy one. Artistes appreciated each others and conveyed their likings to the concerned artists, be it a role acting or a song or a tune. Even though for quite some time Kishore Kumar seemed to rule the industry, he was good enough to say that” Hum to bhai Barsaati mendhak hai. Barsaat khatam, hum khatam. Rafi saab jaise Timeless singer nahin hain hum.”

I had never heard this song from the film ‘insaaniyat’ till a few months back. While travelling from our native place in Belgaum, we often hear some CDs in the car. I had bought a couple of CD’s sometime back which were kept in the car. Lately I find that it is the safest place to keep CD’s so that we get to hear them sometime if not often. Once I bring them home, they are bound to get lost , as happened with this CD where I heard this bhajan ‘apni chhaaya mein bhagwan bitthaa le mujhe’ for the first time. I brought the CD home so that I could look for this unheard song, and now the CD is not where I kept it handy next to the lap top.
