Hullo Atuldom

Dharamdev Anand, better known as Dev Anand, gave us a few songs that may have become life-mantra for many of his fans as well as followers of Hindi film music.

‘har fikr ko dhuyen mein udaata chala gaya’ , ‘hans tu hardam khushiyan ya gham’ are examples of life-mantra songs that are my personal favourites.

‘hai apna dil toh awaara na jaane kispe aayega’ would have been the song on the lips of many youngsters along with ‘pal bhar ke liye koi humein pyar karle’.

I would add songs like ‘phoolon ka taaron ka sabka kehna hai’, ‘choodi nahi mera dil hai’, ‘dheere se jaana khatiyan mein re khatmal’, ‘ruk jaana o jaana humse do baatein karte chali jaana’, etc. to any of the personal playlists that I may have written about in many of my previous posts on occasions like Devsaab’s birth or death anniversaries.

Devsaab would have been 100 this year and he may have still been making movies that his heart dictated (had he been around & in good health). I cannot imagine what would be the contents of those movies. In the last few years of his career he acted, produced & directed ‘Main Solah Baras Ki’ (1998), ‘Censor’ (2001), ‘Love at Times Square’ (2003), ‘Mr. Prime Minister’ (2005) & ‘Chargesheet’ (2011); I am not sure of the fate of these at the Box-Office. But he died of cardiac arrest in London on 3rd December 2011, at the age of 88 and we are not sure what we have missed. Gosh! it is 12 years already!

Dev Anand was known to have introduced a lot of new talent to the industry. His 1998 film ‘Main Solah Baras Ki’ was no different. In fact, it was the story of a filmmaker who is on the lookout for a new actress to star in his upcoming Bollywood movie. When he makes an announcement, many Indian women and men all over the world wait with bated breath to see who the lucky woman was going to be. The filmmaker does not find anyone in India, so he decides to tour U.K., and meets with beautiful Tina (Neeru Bajwa), who he casts in his next film. While meeting Tina, he also meets 16-year-old Madhu Mehra (Shaista Usta) in U.K., who also wants to act in his movie called “Main Solah Baras Ki”. The common thing between them is that both- Madhu & Tina- share the same birth date (the year is different); Dev likes Madhu, while Madhu loves Dev, and will do anything to make him notice her as a woman, not as a teen. The question is whether this veteran actor can decide to hold onto his own, while this charming teenager turns on her charm on him.

Jas Arora, Supriya Karnik, Deepak Tijori, Ananth Mahadevan, Tanuja, Harish Patel, A.K. Hangal, Satyen Kappu, Shashikala were the rest of the cast. Rajesh Roshan was the music director & Amit Khanna was the lyricist. Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, Anuradha Paudwal, Kumar Sanu & Alka Yagnik were the playback singers used.

Some small interesting trivia:- Tanuja acted in this Navketan Film almost 30 years after ‘Jewel Thief’. Amit Khanna & Rajesh Roshan came together in a Dev Anand movie 18 years after ‘Manpasand’ & ‘Lootmaar’.
I had zeroed in on a song, which was something like a ghazal, by Udit Narayan to go with this post. The song was nice on the ears but the choreography was something that I couldn’t understand. Then I saw ‘hulchal macha di tune hulchal’ which was also in Udit Narayan’s voice & it also had Devsaab’s trademark smile, mannerisms & twinkle-in-the-eye. So, let us see this 25-year-old song where a (then) 75-year-old Devsaab was still charming. We also see Shaista Usta donning a Army-Major look almost like Devsaab of ‘Hum Dono’ (1961). I think I also heard Dev Anand’s voice at the start of the song; mouthing ‘yeh aankhen uff yumma’.

With this song we also (belatedly) wish Udit Narayan with health & happiness. His birthday was on 1st December.

As I was writing this post a thought struck me. The first time I came across this blog called atulsongaday.me was because my daughter asked me about a song from a Dev Anand film -‘Manzil’ (1960). She asked me for the exact words of the song ‘chupke se miley pyaase pyaase’. She posted a request to Atulji who gave the details in this post.

My journey continued with occasionally commenting to songs posted. One fine day, in 2012, I sent the lyrics to a songfrom ‘Taxi Taxie’ and followed it with another song.

Mere yaar ko mere Allah de ek chaand sa pyaara lalla (Dacait) was my first post ever on the blog. I remember what I had sent him was one long unstructured post. Atulji, was good enough to edit it to look readable (he still has to do it sometimes). Plus the lyrics that I had sent had to be corrected for spellings etc. But, I used to still send lyrics of those songs which I thought everyone will like & enjoy.

Sometime in the first 2 years of my journey as a contributor, I started writing posts only for occasions like festivals, birth & death anniversaries, and my 100th post came with this Sanjeev Kumar-Vidya Sinha song from “Hiraasat”. That first 100 took me a little over three years:- three years & two months to be exact.

My 200th post came in two years with a post for Zeenat Aman’s birthday.

This song, after a year and nine months, was my 300th post.

My 400th post was also for Dev Anand’s anniversary in 2020 (it took one year and four months).

My fastest 100, the 500th, came with this song; which took just a year and two months.

Here is today’s song.

Blog Day :

47207 Post No. : 16431 Movie Count :

We have often likened this blog to a ‘train and its journey’. Here this train- ‘the blog’ is driven by the ‘engine’ that is our fearless leader Atul ji. The coaches of this train or the ‘wagons’ 🙂 are the team members. This train – a ‘bandwagon’ is on an exciting journey of exploring and discussing yesteryear Hindi Film Music and some non-film music too. The blog is read all over the globe (right?) and there are many many readers and well-wishers associated with this blog.

The journey is on … and before anybody ‘sleeps’ :), he or she must fulfill the commitments made to themselves and for the blog. These commitments have been taken voluntarily by the members with the permission of the ‘leader’. From the team members there already is our ‘in-house’ ‘encyclopedia’ and seniors writing in-depth posts on the yesteryear’s music and movies. There are passionate team members actively participating in this journey of ‘love for the cinema and HFM’.

Then there is me often sending articles, lyrics contribution, reminders to the editors, pointing out corrections, giving suggestions and (emotional blackmailing 🙂 of the editors not included.) always requesting for something or the other, all the time. 🙂

So, everything is going on well in order like a ‘standard operating procedure’. Here it is mutually agreed and ‘non-documented’ ‘SOP’ operating successfully for more than ten years now (that is after the contributors joined). This blog is the best example of well-synchronized efforts towards a ‘common goal’ in agreement by all.

Well, everyone is now aware of what I have mentioned above. But how the blog was in its initial days …

When it started, only the originator ‘the leader’ was there, and then he was not also a leader but a simple ‘enthusiastic music lover’. I guess that when he initiated this blog, he was an already married person. What did you said … is that anything to do with this blog? Yes, because after all a family person has to look after his family and also needs to contribute to domestic work 😊 at least in a small way if not a big contribution.

So how it was all when Atul ji had just started the blog? And after that, how he keeps it going, moving from places to places in his professional life?

That imagination is the subject of the today’s article with a rocking song accompanying to it :).

Before that we need to see Atul ji in two aspects – one being ‘his self’ in isolation as the one-man army, and second as a ‘team leader’ with all team members. It is him only who is ‘constant’ (like ‘change’) and owns a responsibility to keep this blog going. So, how he sets out on this journey, travelling from places to places, exploring HFM. I am sure when he launched this blog his morale was at an all-time high-level.  Since he was already doing a job then, the workplace responsibility also gets added and after that he needs to find time for his passion – writing about Hindi movies, the songs, and his related memories.

So, the journey of blog started from Jabalpur and then moving from places to places – Jabalpur to Nagpur, Nagpur to Bilaspur, Bilaspur to Izzat Nagar (Bareilly)- it is now halting at Gorakhpur. The next station may be Bhopal 😊 we hope so 😊.

Well, the journey must have started with the same energy as our today’s hero started ‘main niklaa o gaddi le ke’ 🙂!

And every city he (our leader) lived in he left his ‘dil’ and collected ‘unforgettable memories’ of these places. In this process he did not care where he was. He was just moving … ‘gaddi le ke’

On the way he finds ‘moti’ (substitute for ‘mutiyaar’ 🙂 ), or actually lot of ‘motis’ (pearls). These are the ‘rarest of rare gems’ that are posted on the blog. Imagine that the dot days on the blog are the obstacles or ‘phaatak’ and ‘signal’. But, being disciplined person, our leader will not break the signal (translation of ‘signal todna’ or jumping the signal) and run, but he will wait’ and resume with more force with new milestones. Just think that the milestones are the centuries of songs and stations en route are the centuries of the various artists.

I believe that our leader does not believe in ‘dreaming’ and is a ‘man of action’. But, if not dreaming, at least, he must be planning some special articles for special occasions and combining them to ‘special statistical events’ on the blog. There are many new things – new songs – of yesteryear (starting from the thirties) coming to the blog which maintain the excitement of this beautiful journey. New events with ‘older songs’ keep the momentum always on a higher scale.

Just imagine thousands of songs falling from the heaven like petals of flowers, their fragrance filled in all the space around, and the man with his both his hands trying to collect each petal and embracing them to his heart with love. . . each creation of the songs getting the same love and enthusiasm and resting at their places shining like a bright star. . .

(We have compared the treasure-trove of songs to the ‘ocean of songs’ many times, for a change this time we symbolize them with flower-petals falling from the heaven 🙂 so that we can embrace them to the heart.)

Operating in this digital age now and maneuvering the steering with remote controls the ‘gaddi’ is travelling. And the journey is on. . .

So today when our dear Atul ji is celebrating his birthday we wish him a very happy birthday and a healthy, wealthy, peaceful and ‘full of musical life’ ahead. . .

Let us now enjoy this entertaining song dance performance in Jat Yamla style 🙂 and celebrate this occasion. . .

Blog Day : 3679 Post No. : 14572

He was born John Prakash Rao Janumala. He spent his childhood years in Mumbai’s Dharaavi and studied only upto class VII. Then he had to do odd jobs to overcome financial problems in the family. He was a good mimic. He started to perform in stage shows such as Tabassum Hit Parade and Kalyanji-Anandji Nite etc. He was noticed by Sunil Dutt at one of the stage shows and he got a chance in “Dard Ka Rishta” in 1981. His next big movie was Gul Anand’s – Pankaj Parashar directed movie “Jalwa”. Since then he has done around 350-400 movies.

Ok we adore him as Johnny Lever.

He is one from the current crop of comedians who were (I am sure) inspired by the likes of Mehmood and Johnny Walker. Can anyone forget his teaming up with Ashok Saraf in Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Karan Arjun’ or for that matter many Rakesh Roshan directed and produced movies be it ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’, ‘Koyla’, ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. He was also part of any David Dhawan movies where his character was as important as the hero’s. He is a performer whose eyes all speak. And he is a decent dancer considering he has teamed up with Govinda, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan etc. for many song and dance sequences. I just realized that he is 60 already and today (14th August) he will be 61. God!!!

Today’s song is from the 1997 Rakesh Roshan directed Shahrukh Khan Movie “Koyla”. The song is something like “Mere Saamne Waali Khidki Mein. . .” from ‘Padosan’ (1968) in the sense that on screen SRK is lip synching to Johny Lever’s singing. This is because SRK plays a mute character in the movie.

The song is in the voice of Udit Narayan, music direction is Rajesh Roshan and written by Indeevar. The song happens at the wedding reception of Raja, the tyrant zamindar role played by Amrish Puri, who has conned Madhuri into marrying him after showing the pic of the mute Shahrukh Khan (who is unaware of the con). Towards the end of the song SRK discovers the bride (who is supposed to be at the reception) sitting and crying in the bedroom with Deepshika filling in for her next to Amrish Puri.

Here is a lovely 1970 style song from 1996. The movie is ” Raja Hindustani” and listening to this song almost reminds me of the movie “Asha”(1980) and its dhaba song “Jaane ham sadak ke logon se mahlo waale kyun jalte hain”.

I am not much impressed with the present day Bollywood music, and so I do not follow it. Once, while travelling by bus, I was subjected to some songs blaring from the audio system of the vehicle. Most songs appeared typically “modern” read “trash” to my ears, but one song caught my ears. It went “main yahan hoon yahan”. I wondered how such a catchy tune, so reminiscent of music in the era betwen 1950-70 got created after 2000 ?

This song lingered in my mind. When I went home and googled it, I found that it was from “Veer Zaara”. Wow ! So that was the explanation for this tune. Veer Zaara uses tunes that Madan Mohan had left unused when he died in 1975.
