#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Rangeela Ratan-1976)
——————————————-——————————

In my childhood days I remember I watched many movies with elders in the family, and mostly with brothers and cousins. I have vague memories of watching many such movies. There were many more movies released those days that I missed out on. I did not even watch them later. That does not prevent me from feeling nostalgic for many such movie titles.

Today’s movie is one such movie. This movie is ‘Rangeela Ratan-1976’.

I have a big ‘nostalgia’ of this movie name called ‘Rangeela Ratan’. Somewhere I think the nostalgia is also associated with the ‘matkaa-king’ Ratan Khatri. Satta or ‘matkaa’ was in full swing in Maharashtra in those years and from reading news or discussions happening around between elders or seniors in school this may have got it imprinted on my mind.

One more Hindi movie that had this nostalgia of ‘sattaa-matkaa’ for me is ‘Dharmaatma-1975’ which had Feroz Khan and Premnath, which sources mentioned was based on Ratan Khatri and his ‘business’.

When I became associated with this blog I had shared a song from the movie ‘Rangeela Ratan-1976’. At that time I was not aware about all songs from this movie.

Later on one more duet song was presented by Atul ji from this movie which I remember to have heard during those years.

Recently during my daily browsing for songs I got to listen to one more song from this movie which I sounded a little familiar to me. This song is a duet song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle.

Today I am presenting this duet song from this movie ‘Rangeela Ratan-1976’.

Before that, here is a brief about this movie as mentioned by Atul ji in earlier post with the song of this movie.

“Rangeela Ratan” (1976) was directed by S Ramnathan for R B Films, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Rama Prabha, Ajeet, Jeewan, Ratan Khatri (special role), Durga Khote, Shyama, Narendanath, Tuntun, Sunder, Shashi Kiran, Shreeram Laagoo, Pinchoo Kapoor, Keshto Mukherji, Manorama, Urmila Bhatt, Uma Khosla, Katy Irani, Babban Lal Yadav, Ghanshyam, Birbal, Viju Khote, Preetam, Gopal, Dilip Dutt, Shekhar Purohit etc in it.
The movie was supposedly based on the life of Ratan Khatri (who makes an appearance in the movie), who was known as matkaa king of Bombay those days. Matkaa was a kind of gambling (gambling is illegal in India of course).

‘Rangeela Ratan-1976’ has five songs written by Gulshan Bawra and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Here are the details of the songs of this movie.

SNo. Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Dhholi dhhol zor se bajaa Kishore Kumar, Babban Lal Yadav
02 Teraa meraa meraa teraa jab ho gaya faislaa Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle
03 Laakhon choley toone badle… jaag re jaag musaafir Mukesh 20.12.2013
04 Main hoon rangeela ratan Shailendra Singh
05 Tum hi ho tum hi ho jaan e jaan Lata Mangeshkar,Kishore Kumar 15.07.2018

As can be seen from the above table, two songs from ‘Rangeela Ratan-1976’ have already been posted on the blog earlier.

Today’s song is the third song from this movie ‘Rangeela Ratan’ to be presented on the blog.

This song is a ‘romantic duet’ picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Parveen Babi where they can be seen ‘romancing’ in the ‘rains’ and singing this song. Many many other artists are also seen towards the end of the song.

Today 30th April’2023 is the third ‘remembrance anniversary’ of Rishi Kapoor (born on 04th September’1952 and passed away on 30th April’2020).
On this occasion the today’s song also serves as a ‘tribute to him’.

04th April’2023 was the sixty-ninth birth anniversary of Parveen Babi, the actress appearing in this song. She was born on 4th April’1954 and passed away on 20th Janunary’2005.

As a ‘fan of seventies’ I pay my tributes to both of them of them who have given us so many memories of their movies from the seventies.

Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle are the singers of this song alongwith chorus.
Gulshan Bawra is the lyricist and music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Let us listen to this song which I am sure will bring back memories for many…

5399 Post No. : 17712

Today’s song is a duet from the film ‘Duniya Jhukti Hai’ (1960).

It was a social film made by the legendary Wadia Movietone. It was directed by the elder of the two brothers- JBH.Wadia. The MD was Hemant Kumar and the songs were written by Rajendra Krishna. The cast of the film was Sunil Dutt, Shyama, Daisy Irani, Kumkum, Agha, BM Vyas, Damuanna Malavankar, Madhu Apte, Dalpat, Neelambai and many others. There are two actors from Marathi cinema. Let us know more about them as not much is known about them in the Hindi cinema world.

In the early era of the cinema there was a trend to make films in 2 languages – Local and Hindi. Therefore most films made by Marathi filmmakers at Bombay, Poona and Kolhapur were made in Marathi and Hindi. The consideration was only commercial. Local language for local audience and Hindi for All India market. Similarly, in the South too Bilinguals were made. However, here the languages were Tamil and Telugu. The other two Language films Malayalam and Kannada started a bit late. Some films, however, were made even in 3 languages or sometimes dubbed in other languages. Hindi films from the south started quite late, in 1948, with ‘Chandralekha’ made by SS Vasan. After its success, for the next 8 to 10 years southern bilinguals were made in Local and Hindi languages.

Even in Calcutta, films were made in Bangla and Hindi, with the same commercial angle. In Calcutta, some Hindi films too were made by film companies other than New Theatres. This trend of bilinguals from Calcutta was a regular feature since 1935 for about 15 years – longer than south or Marathi films.

One feature of these bilinguals was that Local language actors appeared in the Hindi version. For Marathi actors, speaking dialogues in Hindi was not much of a problem, so many such local actors worked in Hindi versions. Comparatively, southern and Bangla actors found it difficult to speak Hindi, so less number of local artistes appeared in bilinguals. Many times their dialogues had to be dubbed by some other artiste.

From Marathi, one such local popular artiste was Damuanna Malvankar. His full name was Damodar Rajaram Malvankar. He was born in a poor Bramhin family at Nippani (near Kolhapur) on 8-3-1893. He had only the basic education. In those days, there were no films, but stage dramas were very popular. Getting a job as an actor was easy. Damu had a natural squint and he skillfully used it as his best weapon.

At the age of 15 or so, he joined Keshav Rao Datey’s theatrical company ‘Maharashtra Natak mandali’. He used to get only comedy roles. After a few years, he joined Deenanath Mangeshkar’s ‘Balwant Sangeet Mandali’. When talkie films started, he joined cinema along with director Vishram Bedekar. He did films with Master Vinayak and Acharya Atre. His major films were with Vinayak and Atre, playing the caricature of a Marathi gentleman (‘Brandichi Batli/Brandy Ki Botal’, ‘Brahmachari’). His image became identified with the part of Chimanrao, the middle-aged householder of CV Joshi’s political satires, partnered by Vishnupant Jog’s Gundyabhau (‘Lagna Pahave Karun’, ‘Sarkari Pahune’). They remained partners for many years. Other directors filmed Joshi stories with them (e.g. Raja Thakur’s ‘Gharcha Jhala Thoda’) but never with Vinayak’s incisiveness. Malvankar went on to play many stereotyped character parts, usually as the foil to the lead actor, and one major ‘serious’ role, the lead character of ‘Gajabhau’.

Damuanna was a very popular comedy actor in Marathi films. He worked in over 50 Marathi films. At one time he used to get more than double of what the hero of the film used to get for his role. His most famous film role was that of ‘Chimanrao’, a fictional character in Marathi literature. His companion used to be ‘Gundyabhau’ acted by VS Jog. This comedy pair was a household name during their peak time.

Like all others, he too worked in the Hindi versions of successful Marathi films. In all, he acted in 12 Hindi films. They were ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1934), ‘Andheri Duniya’ (1936), ‘Bramhachari’ (1938), ‘Mera Haque’ (1939), ‘Ghar Ki Rani’ (1940), ‘Amrit’ (1941), ‘Sangam’ (1941), ‘Badi Maa’ (1945), ‘Jeevan Yatra’ (1946), ‘Subhadra’ (1946), ‘Main Tera Hoon’ (1947) and ‘Duniya Jhukti Hai’ (1960).

Damuanna was a good friend of Sunil Dutt and the latter wanted Damuanna, though retired, to work in at least one of his films. It took about a month to convince Damuanna to work in this film – ‘Duniya Jhukti Hai’, but finally he agreed. Along with him another old Marathi artiste Madhu Apte also was invited to be in this film. Thus these two old timers of Marathi/Hindi films appeared in this film.

His only daughter Bharati Malavankar was a heroine in Marathi films. Damuanna had very cordial family relations with the Mangeshkar family, from the days he had worked for Deenanath Mangeshkar’s drama company, when all these children were too young. This culminated in Hridaynath Mangeshkar marrying Bharathi Malvankar. Damuanna Malavankar died on 14-5-1975.
[Based on information from http://www.marathifilmdata.com, with thanks.]

The other Marathi actor was Madhu Apte. Madhu Apte’s full name was Madhukar Shankar Apte. He was born at Poona on 1-3-1919. He was a Marathi stage and film actor predominantly, who successfully used his handicap of stammering to advantage, in delivering dialogues and creating humor by mistiming the dialogues.

He acted in many Hindi films for about 40 years. His first film was ‘Ramshastri’ in 1944. He used his stammering as a means to create comedy. He worked in 33 Hindi films. For this he had to travel from Poona to Bombay frequently. This affected his health and he said goodbye to acting somewhere in 1985. His last Hindi film was ‘Aasha’ (1980).

Madhu Apte died on 25-2-1993 at Pune.

The film ‘Duniya Jhukti Hai’ was quite entertaining. The music was good and the story had a happy ending. The story of the film is. . .

After his lover ditches him by marrying a rich person, Mohan (Sunil Dutt) changes his name as Bankelal and becomes a criminal in a gang run by The Boss (BM Vyas), whom no one has seen. One day Bankelal saves a child, Munna from drowning and these two develop a close bonding. However, initially, Munna’s widowed mother Lakshmi (Shyama) does not like this bonding. But when Munna falls ill, she realizes that Banke has a real love for the child and she starts getting attracted to him. During Munna’s illness, Banke promises him that he will leave the criminal’s profession and go straight hereafter. When Munna is well, Banke surrenders to the police, who request him to help them get The Boss. When The Boss comes to know all this, he kidnaps Munna.

While searching for Munna, there is a gunfight. As Banke is about to shoot The Boss, Lakshmi shouts that he is the father of Munna. In this commotion The Boss escapes, but the police shoot him dead. All is well now. Bankelal marries Lakshmi and they live happily thereafter with Munna.

Today’s song is a typical musical melody you find in the cinemas of the 50’s decade. Later on this disappeared in songs, with more of orchestration and less of melody (Check S-J’s music, for example) became prevalent. For now, enjoy this duet sung By Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhonsle.

Today’s cabaret video song is from the film ‘Jailor’ (1958).

The film from the stable of Minerva Movietone was a remake of its own film ‘Jailor’ made in 1938 with Sohrab Modi, Leela Chitnis, Sadiq Ali etc. The story, dialogues and song lyrics were by 2 persons – Kamaal Amrohi and Amir Hyder. The screenplay was by JK Nanda and music by Meer Sahib. The film was about a good person turning into a cruel and bad person due to personal troubles and again turning into a philanthropic good man, due to change of heart and regrets.

The story has shades of a famous novel ‘Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde’, written by Robert L Stevenson in 1886. It was made into a silent film in 1920 and then talkie films were made in 1931, 1941 and 2006 in Hollywood. It seems the 1931 film was the inspiration  for the original film ‘Jailor’ of 1938. However, it is difficult to understand why Sohrab Modi decided to make a remake of this film in 1958.

In the interval of 1938 and 1958, Sohrab Modi’s image had been formed as an expert in historical films and for his unique style of delivering long Urdu mixed Hindi dialogues in his sonorous solid voice. Films like ‘Pukar’ (1939), ‘Sikandar’ (1941), ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Jhansi Ki Rani’ (1952), ‘Rajhath’ (1956), ‘Nausherwan e Adil’ (1957) and ‘Yahudi’ (1958) (released before ‘Jailor’ (1958)) had confirmed his image in the minds of Indian audience in this way. For them to accept Modi as an emotional pervert was simply not possible.

It was a mystery why Modi chose such a film for a remake which would be a mismatch to his current image. The audience neither accepted the film nor Modi in the role of a cruel and bad man and the film was a failure at the Box office. Modi must have remembered his early debacle film ‘Atma Tarang’ (1937) which was made without caring for what the audience wanted ! A film made to satiate self satisfaction not caring for the audience faces this result undoubtedly ! And Modi had a choice of many hit films like ‘Pukar’ (1939) or ‘Sikandar’ (1941) etc.

Making remakes of earlier Hit and successful films was a trend not only for the South made films, but even many Hindi films were remade again in Hindi. Here are a few examples….

The most famous remake is ‘Aurat’ (1940), remade as ‘Mother India’ in 1957 by Mehboob Khan. Actor Kanhaiyalal did the same role of Sukhi Lala in both films.

‘Miss Mala’ of 1941 was remade as ‘Amar’ in 1954. Naushad was the MD for both versions. Actor Jayant played the same role in both films.

Film ‘Pugree’ of 1948 was remade as ‘Dil Daulat Duniya’ in 1972. Comedian Dikshit had played the role of Ramu Chacha in ‘Pugree’ accompanied with a small dog – Chikoo. This role was played by Om Prakash in ‘Dil Daulat Duniya’ with a small dog Pickoo.

Film ‘Grihasthi’ of 1948 was remade as ‘Ghar Basake Dekho’ in 1963.

Film ‘Malkin’ of 1953 was remade as ‘Biradari’ in 1966.

Film ‘Panghat’ of 1943 was remade as ‘Chitchor’ in 1976.

These are just a few examples but there are hundreds of films remade in different languages from other languages. The most were in Hindi from Southern languages. Why are remakes done? Why are film stories copied? There are many reasons. Most importantly, for a remake, a ready-made story, screenplay, dialogues and even the songs are available. Secondly, since the original is a hit film, success of the remake is expectedly almost certain and thirdly, the shootings can be done in a short period, thereby saving money.

There is one more reason. Read the following. . .

In 2004, a book called ‘Why We Tell Stories’, written by Christopher Booker was published. It is a book having more than 700 pages-728 pages to be exact. The book says

“There are only 7 (Seven) basic plots in the whole world. They are recycled again and again in novels, movies, plays and operas. These are

  1. Overcoming the Monster
  2. Rags to riches
  3. The quest
  4. Voyage and return
  5. Rebirth
  6. Comedy,  and
  7. Tragedy “.

After this book was published, there was chaos and criticism started. ‘New York Times’ also jumped in. The author coolly replied to all points and stuck to his statements. If we look at Hindi films, I personally feel that what the author has said is true in our case. Only thing is that our film stories are always a clever mixture of all or some of the above points.

Now let us see the story of the film ‘Jailor’ (same in both the 1938 and 1958 film). . .

Dilip (Sohrab Modi) is a good natured kind hearted jailor. He has a good looking wife Kanwal (Kamini Kaushal) and a doting girl child – Bali (Daisy Irani). Kanwal likes to enjoy modern life , like attending clubs etc, which Dilip does not like. Kanwal does not like her husband. She contacts her ex-lover Dr. Ramesh (Abhi Bhattacharya) and they both elope. She is not worried about her child either. This shock changes the life of Dilip and he becomes cruel, hot tempered and a nasty person, as if to avenge the world for what happened to him.

Kanwal and her lover meet with an accident. Ramesh loses his sight and Kanwal’s face is badly injured. When Dilip learns about her accident, he brings a repentant Kanwal back home. However he locks her in a room and tortures her, taunts her and tries to take revenge. She is not allowed to meet her daughter, who is told that her mother has died. Once the daughter Bali falls sick, but Dilip does not allow Kanwal to tend her daughter also. Frustrated and sad Kanwal commits suicide. Due to illness the daughter also dies.

This is another shock for Dilip, but it changes him to his old good nature. He becomes more kind, loving and helpful to others. One of his ex-convicts Prem (Rajkumar Khatri) kills the village rowdy when he tries to trouble his blind sister Chhaya (Geeta Bali). In the jail, Prem requests Dilip to look after his sister. Dilip meets and helps her. He starts loving Chhaya. Unknown to him, Dr. Ramesh, now blind, comes to the same temple in which Chhaaya lives. They get to know each other and develop love.

When Dilip comes to know about their love, he spends his savings and helps both blind people to get operated upon. They regain sight. Dilip ensures that they are united.

Rajkumar Khatri who had been famous for his roles in dharmik films so far did a role of a murderer, contrary to his background. This too did not go too well with the audience.

Here is the song video. Sung by Asha Bhosle and lip synced by dancer Lilian on screen.

Today, April 29, 2023, is the 3rd Remembrance Day of Irrfan Khan, the actor par excellence. After Guru Dutt, I think, he was the only actor whose eyes spoke more than his dialogues.

It was during the shooting of ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’ (2017) that Irrfan Khan fell sick giving him a feeling that all was not well with his health. After the release of the film in November 2017, Irrfan Khan revealed through his twitter handle in March 2018 that he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumors. He was under treatment in the UK for a year. After recovering from his illness, he returned to India in early 2019 and commenced the shooting for ‘Angrezi Medium’ (2020). The bout of illness resurfaced which prevented him in participating in the promotion of ‘Angrezi Medium’ (2020). He was admitted in a hospital in Mumbai on April 28, 2020, and left for the heavenly abode on April 29, 2020, at the age of 53. By the way,  on the eve of Irrfan Khan’s 3rd Remembrance Day, Swiss-French Production’s Hindi (with Rajasthani dialect) film, ‘The Song of Scorpions’ (2023) in which he acted in the lead role, is scheduled to get a theatrical release in India on April 28, 2023.

Irrfan Khan (07/01/1967 – 20/04/2023) was born in Jaipur in a middle-class family, which once belonged to one of the noble families of Tonk in Rajasthan. His father had a business of tyres. From the childhood, he was an introvert person. Surprisingly, he was also an vegetarian from his childhood. His father used to make fun of him that mistakenly a brahmin has been born in his family. He completed his schooling and graduation in Arts from Jaipur. His mother wanted him to become a professor but his interest was to become an actor. During his teenage years, Irrfan Khan used to participate in amateur dramas in Jaipur. He was a fan of Hindi films and used to watch Hindi films regularly. From that time onwards, he had made up his mind to become an actor in Hindi films. He had decided to enroll for post-graduation in Theatre in the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi. However, with his father’s death, it was not possible to leave Jaipur for Delhi. Being the eldest son, it became his responsibility to look after his mother and, a younger brother. That meant that he had to run his father’s tyre shop.  Later, it was his younger brother who took the responsibility of looking after his father’s tyre shop that made him possible to join NSD in 1986. His elder sister helped him in paying fees for the enrollment in NSD.

After completing his post-graduation in theatre from NSD, Irrfan Khan went through a very hard struggle to get the entry into Hindi films. On the advice of Tigmanshu Dhulia,  one of his batch-mate in NSD and also his close friend (now a producer-director-actor-writer), Irrfan Khan shifted to Mumbai in 1988. But it was very hard to get even a respectable role in Hindi films. Because of his introvert nature, he was not good at marketing himself as an actor.  For the livelihood,  he started working in TV Serials. Two of his prominent roles in TV serial which I saw was that of playing historian Badayuni in  ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ (1988) and the Urdu Poet, Makhdoom Mohiuddin in ‘Kahkashan’ (1991). His first acting assignment in Meera Nair’s ‘Salaam Bombay’ (1989) was reduced to a cameo role in the final cut which made his moral low. [Note: The personal information about Irrfan Khan is based on a couple of his TV interviews].

Irrfan Khan got some small roles in Hindi films like ‘Kamala Ki Maut’ (1989), ‘Drishti’ (1990), ‘Ek Doctor Ki Maut’ (1991) and many more but these films did not made the audience to carry a lasting impression about his acting, probably due to small roles and sometime inconsequential roles. After a disappointing decade of 1990s for Irrfan Khan, a silver lining came in his filmy career when London-based director Asif Kapadia offered him the lead role in the movie, ‘The Warrior’ (2001). The film ran successfully and was a hit in international film festivals, making Irrfan Khan an internationally known actor.

Irrfan Khan acted as a villain in ‘Haasil’ (2003), his close friend, Tigmanshu Dhulia’s first film as a director.  The film was critically acclaimed though it failed at the box office. However, Irrfan Khan’s villainous role was very much appreciated with his Allahabadi Hindi accent. His other critically acclaimed films included Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Maqbool’ (2004), Mira Nair’s ‘Namesake’ (2006), Anurag Basu’s ‘Life in Metro’ (2007), Danny Boyle’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ (2008). Tigmanshu Dhulia’s ‘Paan Singh Tomar’ (2012) brought a second boost in the acting career of Irrfan Khan making him as an accomplished actor. He won the National Award for the best actor in this film.  He justified his position as an actor par excellence in his subsequent Hindi films like ‘Lunch Box’ (2013), ‘Piku’ (2015), ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’ (2017), ‘Hindi Medium’ (2017) and his last released film, ‘Angrezi Medium’ (2020). For the last two films, Irrfan Khan won Filmfare’s best actor awards.

During His active filmy career, Irrfan Khan acted in around 85 films. 18 films remained unreleased as of the date. I have watched most of his critically acclaimed films. Irrfan Khan does not have any particular mannerism in his acting like Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Shahrukh Khan etc. These star-actors had huge fan following who would expect their favorite star-actors to repeat their mannerism in all films.  Irrfan Khan, on the other hand, has fan followers who seem to like his varied roles with an unconventional acting style.

On the occasion of the 3rd Remembrance Day of Irrfan Khan, I have selected one of the songs from his film, ‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’ (2017) in which he teamed up with Malayalam actress, Parvathy in lead roles. It is a romantic comedy, a genre in which Irrfan Khan has never done the role as a lead actor in his previous films.  The film is produced by Ajay Rai and Sutapa Sikdar (wife of Irrfan Khan) and is directed by Tanuja Chandra. Other supporting cast of the film included Neha Dhupia, Isha Sharvani, Pushti Shakti, Luke Kenny, Brijendra Kala, Navneet Nishan, Siddharth Menon, Bajrang Bali Singh, Avneet Kaur etc.

I have watched the film on OTT sometime last month. The film turned out to be beyond my expectation. I liked the unusual romantic story of single couple, Irrfan Khan and Parvathy during their journey from Rishikesh to Jaipur and finally to Gangtok. They are not usual hero and heroine of the mainstream Hindi films.  They travel to these places simply because Irrfan Khan’s three ex-girlfriends are well settled at these places and he would like Parvathy to know that despite his break-up with them, they still remember him and he is welcome at their respective houses. During the journey, both  Irrfan Khan and Parvathy appear pole apart in their temperaments. But towards the end of their journey, they realize that they love each other and their differences in temperaments complement each other as a couple.

The film was critically acclaimed. Performances of both Irrfan Khan and Parvathy were highly appreciated. But that did not reflect positively on film’s box office collections.  I found the film interesting to watch. The protagonist in the film is Parvathy and the very nature of her role, she has to be less talkative and to act like lacking in confidence which she does very well.  But it is Irrfan Khan who generates interest for the audience through his extroversion and witty presence.

‘Qarib Qarib Singlle’ has 4 songs written by Raj Shekhar (2) and Hussain Haidry (2). These songs were set to music by Vishal Mishra (2) and Rochak Kohli (2). All songs are apt to the situations. In addition, there was a Sufi Qawwali which was edited out at the final cut.

I am presenting the film’s first song “Wo Jo Tha Khwaab Sa” to appear on the Blog. The song is sung by Atif Aslam. Raj Shekhar has written the song which is set to music by Vishal Mishra. The song does not have the second antara in the film’s soundtrack while audio clip contains full song.  I like the song for its philosophical lyrics and the way Atif Aslam has brought the emotion in his rendering.

In the film, the song is played in the background as Jaya, while in Gangtok,  decides to meet her ex-boyfriend (Luke Kenny). On the other hand, Yogi (Irrfan Khan) after meeting his all three ex-girlfriends, gets looped into his past relationships. Note how Irrfan Khan’s eyes speak when he secretly watches the dance trainer, Isha Sharwani who was one of his ex-girlfriends. The lyrics by Raj Shekhar is philosophical. The substance of the song is why should one spoil the present enjoyable moments by recalling and conducting ‘post-mortem’ of the past break-ups? Whether one should be loath about the past break-ups and look for the reasons therefor as to what went wrong or to move on to enjoy whatever one has for the present. The frequent refrain ‘jaane de’ in the song is  emphasizing on these two options.

“Duniya Ek Saraai”(1947) is one of the BTYC eligible movies today.

“Duniya Ek Saraai”(1947) was directed by Kidar Sharma for Ranjit Movietone, Bombay. The movie had Jagirdar, Begum Para, Altaf, Rajendra, Meena Kumari, Shanta Kumari, Nazirabai, Kesarbai, Pt.Iqbal, Kumar Junior etc in it.

The movie had 9 songs in it. Five songs have been covered so far.

Here is the sixth song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Meena Kumari. Kidar Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

Only audio of the song is available. It is clear that the song was picturised on Meena Kumari herself as a “separated from beloved” genre of song.

“Chandralekha”(1948) is one BTYC eligible movie today.

“Chandralekha”(1948) was produced and directed by S S Vasan for Gemini Chitra, Madras. This blockbuster big budget movie had T.R.Rajkumari, M.K.Radha, Ranjan, Sundri Bai, Yashodra Katju, L.Narayan Rao, Subbayya Pillai, V.H.Janaki, H.Krishnamurthy, B.S.Kalla, A.K.Chopra, Sundar Rao, Varalakshmi etc in it.

“Chandralekha”(1948) had 11 songs in it. Eight songs have been covered in the blog by now.

Here is the ninth song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by chorus. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by R Vaidhyanathan.

The song is played in the background as horse riding warriors are seen racing away towards somewhere (battlefield) in perfect formation, one after the other.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

This song is the 100th song in this year under the Blog Ten Year Challenge (2013-2023). We are still in on 29 April 2023. More than eight months are still left. Lots and lots of songs (1200 to be exact) were covered in the blog in 2013 between 30 April 2013 to 31 december 2013. Many of the movies of these songs are still unYIPPEED so we can hopefully have record number of songs under BTYC in this year, breaking previous year’s record of 140 songs set in BTYC (2012-2022).

This also happens to be the 100th post in the current month of April 2023. So we continue to live up to our new year resolution of posting 100 or more songs in each month in this year. Hopefully we will continue to stick to this resolution throughout the year and even beyond.

8000 Beautiful baby of Bombay Ek Phool Chaar Kaante (1960) Movie YIPPEED in the blog with this post

We observe that three movies (out of six) whose songs were covered in the blog on this date ten years ago (on 28 April 2013)n YIPPEED in the blog. That leaves us with three unYIPPEED movies that are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today (28 April 2023).

“Sansaar”(1951) is one of the BTYC eligible movies today. This movie was produced and directed by S S Vasan for Gemini Pictures, Madras. The movie had Pushpavalli (as Lakshmi), M.K.Radha(as Narayan),Vanaja(as Kamala),Swaraj(as Madan),Gulab(as Ganga),Mohana(as Jamuna),Meera(as Saraswathi),Agha(as Sitaram),
David(as Doctor),J.S.Casshyap(as Jugalji Seth),Anil Kumar(as Gopi junior),Kazam(as Gopi Senior),Ratnapapa(as Rupa Junior),Krishnaveni(as Rupa Senior),Mohan(as Vijay),Venkat(as Kamala`s Cousin),Ramkrishna Rao(as Popatlal),B.S.Kalla(Guest),Vijaya rao(as Dinu Bhaiya),Sadasiva Rao(as Office manager),Rangaswami(as Lakshmi`s father),Balamani(as Dayavati),Rajkumar, Bindumadhavan(as Police Officers) etc in it.

“Sansaar”(1951) had 14 songs in it. Eight songs have been covered in the blog so far.

Here is the ninth song from the movie to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by E.Shankara Sastry and B.S.Kalla.

The song is picturised on Pushpavalli who is seen playing a lullaby song. What a honey fresh sweet voice Lata Mangeshkar has in this song.

Pushpawalli was the mother of Rekha. Two decades onwards, Lata Mangeshkar would give playback to Rekha as well. Thus Lata Mangeshkar has given playback to mother as well as daughter. I am sure we can find a few songs where Lata Mangeshkar sings a lullaby song for Rekha. That would be some sort of a record when Mother and daughter both sing lullabies in the voice of the same playback singer.

Lyrics of this song and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
