Hullo Atuldom
Navratri. Nine nights of festivities. Celebrated through the country in honour of Devi Maa, Maa Durga, or the Holy Trinity of Durga Lakshmi Saraswati. Also Rama’s victory over Ravana and rescuing Devi Seeta from Lanka. No wonder the 10th day of the festival is called Vijaya Dashami.
I have got a Whatsapp forward which gives a perspective of the day as ” Dussehra is a Sanskrit word which means removal of Ten Bad Qualities within oneself, namely
Ahankara (Ego),
Amanavta (Cruelty),
Anyaaya (Injustice),
Kama vasana (Lust),
Krodha (Anger),
Lobha (Greed),
Mada (Pride),
Matsara (Jealousy can also mean competition which is a result of jealousy),
Moha (attachment),
Swartha (Selfishness)”;
which means that ‘Vijaya over these Ten Bad Qualities. (I thought that this was a great thought and hence shared it here)
Dussehra marks the culmination of the Ram Leela, at various venues across the country, with the burning of the effigies of Meghnad (son of Ravana), Kumbhakarna (brother of Ravana) and Ravana himself. Dussehra is also the last day of the Durga Puja for the people from Eastern India (wherever in the world they be). The Durga Puja begins on the sixth day of Navartri, when the idols of the goddess is installed along with those of her children Ganesh and Kartik and Devi Laxmi and Devi Saraswati. Dussehra is the day when the idols are immersed in the holy waters of the rivers after morning puja, kumkum khela etc. Festivities in western India too come to a close with all the rituals associated. So we are at the end of one festival waiting for the next -Deepavali.
Let us bring this festival to a close with this all important aarthi which is from “Purab Aur Paschim” (yes, there are some songs from this film yet to be posted). In the film this traditional aarthi plays at the start to set the story of the movie in motion. It shows Ashok Kumar (whose birth anniversary it was two days ago) leading a group of devotees which includes Kamini Kaushal and Nirupa Roy (13th October was her death anniversary). As the song plays, we see the Union Jack being lowered and replaced by the Indian Tricolour. The movie too becomes ‘color’ from ‘black-n-white’. The aarthi is also used to introduce almost all the characters of the movie, we see ‘Bharat’ growing up from Master Alankar to Manoj Kumar and Bharathi (south Indian actress) growing into ‘Gopi’. The movie closes with the aarthi as Saira Banu accepts that she has liked the Indian way of life and her mother Shammi and brother Rajendranath also join the aarthi.
The aarthi is in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor, Brij Bhushan and Shyama Chittar. The music director for the movie were Kalyanji Anandji, who have stuck to the traditional format in here.
Happy Bijoya/ Vijaya Dashami to one and all.

21/10/2020 – 89th Birth anniversary of Shammi Kapoor
————————————————————————
I have in possession for almost a year now, a book titled “Rafinaama” by Isaak Mujawar. One day I just impulsively looked up the book availability on Amazon, and found that only two copies were available. I just ordered it without thinking anything. When the book arrived, then I realized that it was in Marathi. Even for self-proclaimed “kitaabi keeda” like me, sitting down reading it has proven a challenge. Which, I am yet to seriously take up.
Two days ago, I suddenly occurred to me, I am having these books and I should make use of the articles there for writing the various posts. The first book I encountered, for sheer visibility and the size of it, is “eh un dinon ki baat hai” – Urdu Memoirs of Cinema Legends (selected and translated by Yasir Abbasi). So for two days, I have been going through that book.
Since this Shammi Kapoor post is due to be written, I had finalized the song and lyrics are also ready. But the book does not contain anything about Shammi Kapoor and his career. I found “Rafinaama” next, in the drawer that I have kept for such treasures 🙂 never to be seen and touched by anyone.
And lo and behold, I have selected a Rafi song from the film Laila Majnu(1953) for posting on the 89th birth anniversary of Shammi Kapoor and Rafinaama starts with the chapter titiled “Shammi, Rishicha majnucha aawaaj” meaning “majnu’s voice for Shammi and Rishi”.
I am giving a brief roundup of the chapter here :
“Films on Laila Majnu title have been made in hindi film industry in 1922, 1931(2 Movies), 1945, 1953 and 1976. The “Laila Majnu” of 1922 was silent movie and the rest were talkies. Two more movies on the same characters story was differently titled, first “Daastaan-e-Laila Majnu” in 1973 and “Love and God” in 1986. Rafi Sahab’s songs were there in all these movies since 1945. In the 1945 version Rafi sahab has sung two songs but none were actually on Majnu’s character.”
The above chapter in the book says that Rafi’s voice was Majnu’s voice in 1953 film, which is incorrect. Among the 4 songs which Rafi Sahab sang for this three are already posted in the blog. In “Bhar de jholi Allah naam” Rafi sahab’s has sung in 3-4 different voices for different characters, but when Shammi Kapoor comes in line and sings, it’s Talat Mehmood’s voice for him. In the song “Aankhon mein hai tu”, Shammi Kapoor in watching the qawwali being performed, he is not singing at all. Third posted is “Mil gayaa taqdeer se chashmaa yehaan”is a solo Rafi song played in the background during the titles.
The songs posted are listed below:
Song | Date posted | Remarks |
---|---|---|
Ae sanam ye zindagi aayi hai lekar khushi | 18 December 2010 | |
Aasmaan waale teri duniyaa se jee ghabraa gayaa | 28 May 2011 | |
Chal diyaa kaarwaan lut gaye ham yahaan | 7 June 2011 | |
Aankhon mein hai tu | 3 July 2011 | |
Yaad teri zindagi ka saaz ban kar reh gayi | 23 July 2011 | |
Bahaaron ki duniya pukaare tu aa jaa | 9 April 2012 | MD-Sardar Malik |
Ya ilaahi ho mubaarak tujhko ye tera jahaan | 10 april 2012 | |
Dekh lee ae ishq teri | 24 May 2012 | MD-Sardar Malik |
Bhar de jholi Allah naam | 14 February 2013 | |
Mere sarkaar tere ishq ki duniya ko salaam | 25 March 2013 | |
Mil gaya taqdeer se chashmaa yahaan | 6 March 2017 |
The fourth Rafi song from this film is the song of the current post. It is a very short and rapid solo which is played in the background as Laila and Majnu, Shammi Kapoor and Nutan, both die lying in the desert and the sand covers them gradually. This must be the end of the film. So the film is starting and ending with a Rafi song background song. Composer is Ghulam Mohammad and lyrics are by Shakeel Badayuni.
This is 12th song to be posted from this film. One more song which is listed/included in the list of this films’ songs is actually not from this film, but this song posted here from another Shammi Kapoor film Chor Bazar (1954), with Sardar Malik’s music. So that means this movie has 13 songs and only one song remains to Yippee this movie. Remaining song is also a special one with Shamshad Begum giving playback to Master Jadeep. (I will try and get this post shortly).
There are a few more chapters dealing with Shammi Kapoori majnu type songs style which were sung by Rafi sahab, and subsequent Shammi Kapoor clones who tried to adopt the same style. The author is of the opinion that the Shammi style of songs which became famous as “yahoo” style did not originate with Junglee and Shankar-Jaikishan, rather the origin can be found in the songs of film “Tum sa nahin dekha” by O. P. Nayyar.
Shammi Kapoor started his film career with 6 films in 1953. He was the son of Prithvi Raj Kapoor and brother of Raj Kapoor, who was well on his way to be a stalwart film maker by then. But Shammi Kapoor must have set out to make his career on his own, there was no official launching by R. K. Films. His filmography lists 146 films from 1953 – 2011. Rockstar 2011 being the last film in which he acted. Up to Andaz 1971, I counted 56 movies of his which include many memorable musical extravaganzas with Rafi sahab’s playback under Shankar-Jaikishan, O.P. Nayyar and R. D. Burman. Early 50’s when he started as a hero, I can see, that the favoured voice for the hero was not Rafi. Rafi was the voice of everyone else in the some films but not the hero. But Naushad Sahab had used Rafi for all songs on Dilip Kumar in ‘Aan” & “Deedar” and for Bharat Bhushan in “Baiju Bawra”. Or it is possible some of them felt insecure, that Rafi’s singing could over shadow them in popularity. Truly, his phenomenal singing was capable was running away with the credits for all the success of film and its music. Naushad was too big before even “Baiju Bawra”, so could maybe whither the onslaught. Other big personalities who were not so big in early 50’s could have felt insecure. We should be glad that, this type of misapprehensions, if existing, were unable to keep Rafi sahab down for long. If a star shines too bright then its neighbors can be forgiven for being apprehensive.
By any account there must be around 180 songs which Rafi sahab sang for Shammi Kapoor, beginning with “Shama Parwaana” with this unforgettable song. This is a definite Rafi-Shammi song with the definite nuances of “Majnu”’and traces of “wehshat zada ishq”, as the curtain behind which Surraiya is listening to the song, is burnt. Such is the effect of Rafi sahab and Shammi Kapoor’s singing. In this film, seen on TV long ago, Rafi sahab has 5 songs including 3 duets with Suraiyya. There is no other male singer here, so all songs sung by Shammi Kapoor were by Rafi sahab.

Song-Milne ki hasrat mein betaabi ke saath (Laila Majnu)(1953) Singer-Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ghulam Mohammad
Lyrics
Milne ki hasrat mein
betaabi ke saathh
reh gaye phailaa ke haay
donon haathh
phool do din hans ke
jee behlaa gaye
aur ye gunche ae
bin khile murjhaa gaye
aaye thehre aur guzre
qaafile
phir na aise
chaahne waale mile ae
maut se kyun
ishq sharmindaa rahe
qais o laila
mar ke bhi zindaa rahe
qais o laila
mar ke bhi zindaa rahe

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 105# In Remembrance – Kishore Kumar #
—————————————- ——————————————-
Today 13th October’2020 is the thirty-third ‘Remembrance Day’ of the legendary singer Kishore Kumar.
It was on 13th October’1987 that he left this world at the age of fifty-eight only (04.08.1929-13.10.1987) leaving his family, followers and fans shocked, grief-stricken and heart-broken.
On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from ‘1976’ movie ‘Aaj Ka Ghar’.
I was not aware of this movie earlier until I came across this song a few years back. I guess this must be a lesser known or may be even an obscure movie (though it is now available on internet and uploaded three months back (the link which I saw).
‘Aaj Ka Ghar-1976’ was directed by Surendra Shailaj for ‘Shi Adarsh Arts, Bombay’. It was produced by Jaymala. Surendra Sinha was the production controller for of this movie.
It had Jaymala, Shreeram Lagoo, Romesh Sharma, Helen, Lalita Pawar, Baby Mona, Jalal Agha, Madan Puri, I.S. Johar, Chandrashekhar, Ramesh Deo, Master Tito and A.K. Hangal. They were supported by K.K. Purohit, Ilaben, Neelam, Jassu Ben, Jagirdar, Nazmu, Lata Sahni, Chhotu, Vinay, Hansa, Jagmohan Juneja, Mohan Thakur, Duggal, A.U. Khatri and others.
Story and screenplay of this movie was written by B.K. Adarsh whereas the basic idea was by Harin Mehta. Editing of this movie was done by Ravi Patankar. Dialogues and lyrics were written by M.G. Hashmat and revised dialogues were written by Surendra Shailaj (who directed the movie).
Music of this movie was composed by music duo Anil-Arun who composed music for many successful Marathi movies from 1971-1991. Both of them worked independently as well as a ‘team’ for Marathi movies. They also worked as assistants (music arranger) for S.D. Burman and also worked as assistants for may Hindi movies jointly as well as independently.
Anil of Anil Arun is the famous music composer and arranger Anil Mohile whereas Arun Paudwal (spouse of Anuradha Paudwal) was music director. However, as Arun Paudwal passed away in 1991 the pair was broken.
Arun Paudwal also composed music for the ‘1992’ movie ‘Meera Ka Mohan’ which was released after his death. And thereafter Anil Mohile continued to give music to Marathi Movies. He also arranged music for more than hundred programs of Lata Mangeshkar and many Hindi movies too. He passed away on 1st February’2012. Lata Mangeshkar penned a heartfelt condolence on his death as he was very close to the Mangeshkar family.
Coming back to the songs of today’s movie the movie had only three songs-one solo each by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal and one duet of Anuradha Paudwal and Adolf.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.12.1976.
Today’s song is a back-ground song sung by Kishore Kumar and written by M.G. Hashmat. Music is composed by Anil-Arun (I guess this the only Hindi movie they jointly composed music for).
They make their debut on the blog with the movie also making its debut on the blog.
In the few initial posts in this series I had presented some background songs sung by Kishore Kumar. I think it would be interesting to compile a list of such background songs he sung in Hindi movies and that gives us an interesting topic for another post in the future.
Secondly when I came back from Kenya after finishing the project there, I had planned that I will surely visit Khandwa on at least two important dates i.e. 4th August and 13th October as the Kishore fans there always have special programs on these dates, however due to the current situation I doubt if the programs would be held there.
Also couple of years back we had heard that the ancestral home of Kishore Kumar in Khandwa is either sold or bought by somebody and it is going to be renovated due to its dilapidated condition. I am not aware of its present status now(or if it has been taken over by the state government as some rumors were there?). But I will always cherish the memories my earlier visits to Khandwa to this place and the Kishore Kumar memorial there on the Khandwa-Indore road.
Remembering the ‘versatile genius’ Abhas Kumar Ganguly – Kishore Kumar today and paying our tributes, let us listen to one of his songs …
I have not watched this movie. But, from the video of the song available it seems that the song gets played in parts in the movie at various situations and twists and turns in the story of the movie.
However, the happy ‘antaraa’ is played in the beginning of the movie (with titles, as I have watched the titles) and is repeated in the end of the movie where we have a ‘happy ending’ 🙂
I hope that you like this song …

Song-Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar (Aaj Ka Ye Ghar)(1976) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-M G Hashmat, MD-Anil Arun
Chorus
Lyrics
(played in background with titles)
Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aa aaj ka ye ghar
Aaj ka ye ghar
aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraake pee gaya
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraake pee gaya
Kaaton se bhi uljha magar
Wo phool ban ke jee gaya
Ho gaya phir safal
Zindagi ka Safar
Dekh lo ik nazar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
(Lyrics as per video link)
Baar baar aansuon ne bheegoyi nazar
Jaane kyon lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Baar baar aansuon ne bheegoyi nazar
Jaane kyon lut gaya aa aaj ka ye ghar
aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Aaj khushiyon ke chaman mein
Kaisi ye aandhi chali
Aa aa aa aa aa
Aaj khushiyon ke chaman mein
Kaisi ye aandhi chali
Kyon tod di jhonkon ne
Gham ke shaakh se khilti kali
Chal diya baaghbaan bhi
Kali raund kar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aur koi chhod jaata
To na yoon hota gila
Aur koi chhod jaata
To na yoon hota gila
Ae aasmaan ye to bataa
Ye kis khata ki di sazaa
Kyun gaya apna hi dil mera tod kar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
meri mamtaa ki nishaani ee
bin mitaaye mit gayi
meri mamtaa ki nishaani ee
bin mitaaye mit gayi
ik deep ki thhi raushni
kyon bin bujhaaye bujh gayi ee
naa wo geet (?)
naa wo geet
naa wo dhun
naa wo swar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Aa aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Gardishon mein waqt ki hain
Zindagi ke kaafile ae ae
Aa aa aa aa aa
Gardishon mein waqt ki hain
Zindagi ke kaafile
Dil se lagaaya kal jinhen
Hain aaj unse faasle
Chha gaya andhkaar
Ab main jaaun kidhar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
zindagi ki kashmakash se
toot kar jaaun kahaan
main chhoot kar is qaid se
jaaun bhi to jaaun kahaan
sholaa ban jal uthhi ee
meri shaam o sahar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraa ke pee gaya
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraa ke pee gaya
Kaanton se bhi uljha magar
Wo phool ban ke jee gaya
Ho gaya phir safal
Zindagi ka Safar
Dekh lo ik nazar
Aaj ka ye ghar
Aaj ka ye ghar
Sab mil kar Hind pukaaren

“Gau Gauri”(1958) was directed by Raj Thakur for Prabhat Films, Bombay. This was the last movie by Prabhat Films after which this legendary movie making house downed its shutters. The prints of this movie are lost. The movie had Sulochana Latkar, Ratna Mala, Shahu Modak, Anant Kumar, Nana Plasikar, Tara Dixit, Vijay Limaye, Vijay Duggal, Neelam, Vishwas Kunthey, Kelkar, Gramopaadhye, Hemraj, Kishore Paranjape, Narendra Bhandari, Vijay Dixit and an elephant named ‘Ram Prasad’ in it.
The film had eight songs. One song has been covered in the past.
Here is the second song from “Gau Gauri”(1958) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Manna Dey and chorus. The song is written by Bharat Vyas and its music is composed by Sudhir Phadke.
The movie is lost but one of our regulars, viz Mr Nayan Yagnik had watched it during its first run. Here is what he recalls about the climax of the movie:
Gaj Gauri was a good movie, which I had liked when I saw it at Mumbai’s Central Cinema in 1958. The climax, when Pandavas are making steps for an elephant with arrows, to climb down from Heaven was very good!
I think a famous song ‘ Manushya tu bada Mahaan Hain’ was filmed as back-ground song at that situation!
So here is this background song, eulogising the capabilities of “manushy”.
Song-Dharti ki shaan tu hai manu ki santaan(Gaj Gauri)(1958) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Sudhir Phadke
Chorus
Lyrics
Dharti ki shaan tu hai
manu ki santaan
Dharti ki shaan tu hai
manu ki santaan
teri muthhiyon mein band toofaan hai re
tere manushy doot tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai
manushy tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai
tu jo chaahe parwat pahaadon ko phod de
tu jo chaahe nadiyon ke rukh ko bhi mod de
tu jo chaahe maati se amrit nichod de
tu jo chaahe dharti ko ambar se jod de
amar tere pran aan
aa aa aa aa
amar tere pran
mila tujhko vardaan
teri aatmaa mein swaym Bhagwaan hain re
manushy tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai
nainon mein jwaal teri
gati mein bhauchaal teri
chhaati mein chhupa mahaakaal hai
prithhvi ke laal tera
himgiri sa bhaal teri
bhrakuti mein taandav ka kaal hai
dil ko tu jaan
aa aa aa aa
dil ko tu jaan
zara shakti pahchaan
teri vaani mein yug ka aahwaan hai re
manushy tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai
dharti ka veer tu hai
agni ka veer tu jo
chaahe to kaal ko bhi thhaam le
paapon ka pralay ruke
pashuta ka sheesh jhuke
tu jo agar himmat se kaam le
?? mati maan
aa aa aa aa
?? mati maan
pawan sa tu gatimaan
teri chhab se bhi oonchi udaan hai re
manushy tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai
manushy tu bada mahaan hai ae ae
bhool mat
manushy tu bada mahaan hai

Today’s song is from film 102 Not Out-2018.
Readers who identify me as a writer on old films, may be shocked, as I am about to write on a New Era song, as new as not even 1 year old ! But honestly, when I accidentally bumped into this song’s credit, which said that Amitabh Bachhan was the Music Composer of this song, I was myself surprised. Out of curiosity, I found out that song on You Tube and heard/saw it. Frankly, I was not only impressed but even I liked the song. Of course, much of the liking came from seeing the wonderful video of the song- which is just superb !
Amitabh Bachhan (AB for short please) is my favourite actor. I have been seeing many films since late 40s up to the end of the year 1963 – when I began my career in Pharma Marketing. In the beginning of 1971, I heard about film Anand-71, whose songs had already mesmerised me. I went to see the film. More than Rajesh Khanna, I was bowled over by the acting of the lanky New comer (it was AB’s just 7th film) – Amitabh Bachhan. Next I saw him when I was travelling in Goa, where I saw his film Bombay to Goa-72. This was a remake of Tamil film ” Madras to Pondecherry”-66. (Remakes were made in Marathi and Kannada also.) By now, AB had taken over my senses completely and I started seeing his films-but selectively.
Zanjeer-73 (15th film) made him a star. I enjoyed his films like Sholay-75, Deewar-75, Chupke Chupke-75, Amar Akbar and Anthony-77, Trishul-78, Don-78, Satte pe Satta-82 and Coolie-83. In early 80s, I stopped seeing films in Theatres or on TV, due to my job. After that till today, I have not visited a Theatre. I do not know how a Multiplex looks like from inside. I am not proud of this, but it underlines a fact that I had lost interest in seeing the New age films and that I had low level patience. Sometimes I saw films on VCP and later Video player. The last film of Amitabh I saw was Baadbaan-2003. My most favourite film of Amitabh is Trishul-78. I had even bought its Video cassette that time.
Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan, best known as Amitabh Bachchan, was born in Allahabad, India on October 11, 1942. India was still a British colony at the time, and would not achieve independence until five years later. Bachchan’s father was the renowned Hindi poet Dr. Harivansh Rai. His mother, Teji Bachchan, was a Sikh socialite. He has one younger brother, named Ajitabh.
Bachchan went to Sherwood College boarding school before enrolling in Delhi University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Once he graduated, he became a freight broker in Calcutta. After a few years in Calcutta, Bachchan was ready for a change. He decided to move to Bombay and take a stab at Bollywood show business. By this time, India had been independent for nearly two decades, and Hindi cinema was thriving.
In 1969, Bachchan made his film debut in Saat Hindustani. Although the movie tanked at the box office, Bachchan still managed to capture the attention of directors. Soon enough, the offers started rolling in.
By the early 1970s, Bachchan had garnered popularity with audiences as the “angry young man” in a series of successful Hindi feature films. His starring role in Zanjeer was particularly instrumental in launching him to stardom as an action-movie hero. Bachchan’s performances in films like Laawaris, Coolie, Naseeb, Silsila, Shaarabi and Jaadugar continued to enamor fans of the tall and handsome action hero, and also landed him multiple Fanfare Awards. From the 1970s through the early 1980s, the swashbuckling Bachchan appeared in more than 100 films. He seized opportunities to work with India’s most acclaimed directors, such as Prakash Mehra, and dominated the silver screen with films like Trishul, Sholay and Chashme Buddoor. In addition to acting, Bachchan’s roles often required him to sing.
In 1982, Bachchan had a serious accident while filming. Fans prayed for his recovery. Bachchan survived the accident, but it prompted him to change career paths. In 1984, he traded his Bollywood stardom for a seat in the Indian Parliament. His political aspirations proved to be short-lived; in 1987, he left his seat due to unexpected controversy.
By the 1990s, the limelight surrounding Bachchan had begun to fade. But his decision to start his own entertainment production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited, and make himself CEO, put him back in the headlines. Bachchan followed his true calling and returned to the silver screen in 1997 with the film Mrityudaata, produced by ABCL. In 2000, he also started hosting the Indian version of the television game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Despite a few box-office failures in the 1990s, in the 2000s, Bachchan climbed his way back up to stardom as a film actor, earning additional Filmfare and International Film Award nominations for his work on films like Baghban (2003), Khakee (2004) and Paa (2009).
Bachchan married movie actress Jaya Bhaduri in 1973. The couple have two children, a daughter and a son. Their daughter, Shweta Bachchan Nanda, is married to industrialist Nikhil Nanda, whose grandfather was the film director Raj Kapoor. Bachchan and Bhaduri’s son, Abhishek Bachchan, is also an actor and is married to actress Aishwarya Rai.
In addition to being a father and an actor, Bachchan devotes his time to charitable causes. In 2003 he was appointed a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He has won several awards and recently the Dadasaheb Phalke award too. (biography.com).
In my recent post, I had done the analysis of Ashok Kumar’s work pattern. In that article, I had said that may be AB would overtake Ashok kumar’s statistics and the pattern. This was because both of them had a long career period – 61 years for AK and 50 years for AB, and both commanded market demand in their old age, long after their prime times in films. Today, let us see how AB fares….
Period | Aproximate age | Number of films done |
---|---|---|
1969-70 | 27-28 | 2 First film- Saat Hindustani-69 |
1971-80 | 29-38 | 62 |
1981-90 | 39-48 | 43 |
1991-2000 | 49-58 | 20 |
2001-2010 | 59-68 | 58 |
2011-2019 | 69-77 | 47 |
From 1981 to 2000 (20 years) he acted only in 63 films. In 1982 he met with a serious accident during shooting of Coolie film. Then in 1984, he joined Politics and became an M.P., He quit politics in 1987 and rejoined films. But by 1990, his limelight started fading and films were hard to come by. He formed his own company Amitaqbh Bachhan Corporation Limited (ABCL). In the year 2000, his fortune took a turn. He was selected to conduct a game show on TV- Kaun Banega Karodpati. This proved to be an extraordinary successful venture and his popularity soared. This also reflected in his films From 20 films in the decade of 1991 to 2000, he shot to 58 films in 2001 to 2010 period.
He remains one of the most respected actor in the film industry and is in full demand for films. AB has so far acted in 232 films. He has sung 64 songs in 44 films – though none of his songs have become a craze or popular. His first song came in film Kabhie Kabhie-76 and latest song is for film Badla-2019. I feel his golden period was when he worked with Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. He was also benefited when he worked with 15 Screenplays and stories by Salim-Javed. it would have been 17 films, but he refused Hasth ki safai-74 and Mr.India-87 – both films were Box office Hits. Another thing. I read on Internet about his 1969 film ” Ek tha Chander, Ek thi Sudha ” starring AB, Jaya and Rekha. Was there any such film ? If anybody knows anything, please let me know. There is no mention of this film anywhere else.
Today morning (19th), I read in news that AB was admitted in Nanavati Hospital since 15th October for a Liver problem. Luckily, while I am typing this post,I learnt that he has been discharged in the morning only. I wish him good health and like this film’s title let him be 102 Not Out !!!
The film was directed by Umesh Shukla. It was based on a Gujarati story by Soumya Joshi. His next 3 films are ready for release in 2020 – Gulabo-Sitabo, Chehre and Bramhastra. This film had 6 songs. 3 were composed by Salim Suleimani, 1 each was composed by Amitabh Bachhan, Hiralal Bramhabhatt and Rohan Vinayak. The lyrics were by Amitabh Bhattacharya, who has written 308 songs in 82 films. He sang 31 songs in 18 films also. The film was released on 4-5-2018 and earned Rs 102 crores for an investment of Rs. 35 crores only. The story of the film, as per wiki, is….
Dattatraya Vakharia (Amitabh Bachchan) is a 102-year-old who enjoys life in jovial ways. Babulal Vakharia (Rishi Kapoor), his 76-year-old son, is the opposite, and believes that he is now too old to enjoy life, and detests how his father acts. Dhiru (Jimit Trivedi) is an employee at a medical shop who delivers medicine to the Vakharias. Dhiru likes Dattatraya for his attitude and is scared of Babulal because of his grumpy nature.
Dattatraya seeks to break the record of the oldest living person. and thus he seeks to avoid negative people. Therefore, he threatens to send his son to a elderly care facility unless he achieves certain conditions. While Babulal is hesitant, he accepts with Dhiru as a witness. Firstly, Babulal writes a love letter to his deceased wife. Next, he accuses his doctor of being a thief so that he stops going to the clinic daily for a checkup. While rejecting to cut holes in his childhood blanket, Babulal visits a playground and a church that remind him of childhood memories. He becomes sorrowed and distributes cake to young children in the streets with his father.
Babulal begins to appreciate his father’s outlook on life. However, Babulal receives a call from his estranged son Amol informing Babulal that he will visit India. While Babulal is ecstatic hearing the news, Dattatraya is certain that Amol’s motive is to claim their property as their heir. So he gives Babu his last task: to kick Amol out of the house for all his negligence towards his family. They argue and Babulal stops talking to Dattatraya. Even Dhiru, for the first time, supports Babulal and feels that Amol should be given a chance. Dattatraya reveals that Babu had spent all his savings to educate Amol and send him to the United States. However, Amol ignored them, telling nothing about his new family life in America. Dattatraya also tells his son he has cancer, living happily so that Babulal can live like him.
Days later, Amol arrives in India, where Babulal humiliates him in public, calling him to return home. Dattatraya passes away at 102 years of age. Babulal finds a recording of his father predicting that the record of the oldest man will be broken by Babulal himself.
When you will see this video song,I am sure you too will like it. With this song, film 102 Not out and AB as a Music Director make a Debut on the Blog.
This song reiterates, what I always say,” Not all that was made before 70 was good, same as, Not all that is made after 70s is bad”. There is always some good everywhere !

Every year we celebrate our Republic Day on 26th January and Independence Day on 15th August.
This year we celebrated our our 70th Republic Day on 26th January (26.01.2019)and 73rd Independence Day on 15th august 2019.
Hearts of Indians are naturally filled with pride and enthusiasm on such occasions. It is also natural that we are reminded of the many ‘patriotic songs’ on these occasions- they could be from Hindi movies or non-film songs.
This year our Atul ji posted a very nice song and an appropriate article on the occasion. I enjoyed this song and, in the process, also browsed the blog for the other songs which I do remember whenever we celebrate our Independence Day and Republic Day. These songs always bring back those memories when I was a school going boy.
We used to get ready very early in the morning and after the flag hoisting at school and ‘prabhat-pheri’ up to the ‘gram panchayat’ school we again used to attend the flag hoisting ceremony at our colony club ground where the general function would take place for all employees (of the state electricity board) and their families. The distribution of sweets after the program was also a big attraction for us children then.
This time on both the occasions i.e. on Independence Day and Republic Day I could not send a song or a post from my side for the blog. But then I was thinking that is it necessary that we post patriotic songs on these two occasions only?
There are many other special occasions too where we have birth anniversaries and Remembrance Day of the leaders who lead the ‘freedom struggle’ and laid their lives for the freedom, even though they followed different thought process and different line of action to reach their goals.
Yesterday 28th September 2019 was the birth anniversary of one of the most loved martyrs of our country Bhagat Singh. And we remember him on his anniversary and paid our tributes as possible in our own ways.
We do always remember our ‘freedom struggle’ and the ‘hard earned freedom very much and ‘WE’ value it every day.
And may be in the history of our ‘freedom struggle’ it is possible that not a single day was without the fight and sacrifice by our countrymen.
Similarly, our armed forces guarding our borders have to fight every day to secure our borders and foil any attempt against our country by those who want to disturb peace in our country.
And even though we are busy with our daily routine our heart is always with our armed forces who are securing our borders and delivering their duties in the most difficult conditions and delivering their best in the many adverse conditions be it weather or other created circumstantial difficulties time to time, and many times sacrificing their lives whenever it is required so.
I remember one song from Marathi movies ‘sainik ho tumchaysaathi’ which is very close to my feelings that I have mentioned above and also those which I am unable to express in words. This song is just perfect to express those feelings.
(This is from the Marathi movie ‘Paahu Kiti Re Vaat-1963’, of which the lyrics are written by G.D. Madgulkar and it was composed by Datta Davjekar. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle)
The lyrics are in Marathi and are given with the YT link above, so I am not reproducing them here. I am also not trying to translate it because I feel I will not be able to do that perfectly, except the last three lines;
“रक्षिता तुम्ही स्वातंत्र्या प्राणांस घेउनी हाती
तुम्च्यास्तव आमुची लक्ष्मी तुम्च्यास्तव शेतीभाती
एकट्या शिपायासाठी झुरतात अंतरे कोटि”
You protect our freedom exposing your lives to danger
Our prosperity is because of you
Our livelihood (farms and crops) are because of you
Billions of hearts yearns/flounders for every soldier
And, why I am mentioning this above is that many times, I and may be all of us have to go through these feelings and even helplessly we cannot we do anything except reading in the news and expressing our solidarity with our forces whenever there are attacks or commotion on our borders, or other domestic problems where to control the situations our forces are deployed, and while doing so they have to sacrifice their lives…
But our soldiers who are there protecting us are braver then we think, just see this ‘tweet’(which was on tweeter recently) by an army Officer after one of our Officer was captivated by our neighboring country after the attacks on our CRPF Jawans in February this year , and we all were praying for his safe return …
“Dear Friends, things happen. It’s a War… don’t feel disheartened. Indian Armed Forces are capable to take on any mission! Cheer Up… Chin Up… Keep the josh HIGH Just stand UNITED and behind your soldiers, their families and veteran. They will NEVER EVER disappoint YOU Jai Hind”
***
So the spirit of our armed forces and people is always there to protect our country and fight for the country even if it requires of sacrificing of our lives.
Our love and concern for our motherland is always there. We are proud of our history, culture, heritage, and the stories of bravery and valor that will continue to inspire the coming generations.
And, if we have a movie on such historical incidence it has to be here on the blog and that is the reason for this post today.
Many of us (I consider people of my age here) may be remembering to have read about ‘Koma Gata Maru’ in the textbooks of history while in schools. (I am not aware if all those incidences of history which I read in my school days are still included in the today’s school curriculum).
Well, here is a brief about ‘Koma Gata Maru’…
Koma Gata Maru or S.S. Koma Gata Maru a Japanese steamship was hired by Gurudit Singh or Baba Gurdit Singh who was a businessman in Hong Kong.
It sailed on 04.04.1914 from Hong Kong to Coal Harbor, Vancouver and anchored there on 23.05.1914.
What inspired Gurudit Singh can be mentioned in this idea that “The visions of men are widened by travel and contacts with citizens of a free country will infuse a spirit of independence and foster yearnings for freedom in the minds of the emasculated subjects of alien rule”
The ship was to carrying around 346 passengers to Canada who want to immigrate there. However, the strict Canadian immigration laws doesn’t allow them to embark there and the ship was sailed back to Calcutta.
Gurdit Singh was aware of the discriminatory Canadian laws for the south Asians, however India under British rule then and Indians being a British subject he challenged the Canadian laws. The ship was hulled in the sea for almost two months and later on forcefully sailed back to India (on 23.07.1914) except twenty peoples were allowed to enter Canada. This incident has gone down as a shameful incident in the history of Canada.
When the ship sailed back to India and docked at the Budge Budge dockyard at Calcutta the Britishers who by now were known of the revolutionary intent of the people in the ship mostly Sikhs attacked them with Bullets and many people were killed in this incident while the leaders were successful to escape and enter India.
In India, the ‘Koma Gata Maru’ memorial was set up near Budge Budge, Calcutta in 1952 which was inaugurated by our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
In 2014 government of India issued two special coins, INR 5 and INR 100, to mark the centenary of the Komagata Maru incident.
In Canada a monument in remembrance of the Komagata Maru incident was unveiled in July 23, 2012 near the steps of the seawall that lead up to the Vancouver Convention Centre West Building in Coal Harbour.
A stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the arrival of Komagata Maru was released by Canada Post on May 1, 2014.

Today’s movie ‘Jeewan Sangram-1974’ was made on this subject.
And how I became aware of this movie and its song also has story behind it.
I always vaguely remembered to have watched a movie with my Uncle in my childhood days titled ‘Sangram’ having actor Shashi Kapoor.
The other thing I vaguely remember which always keep me haunting with this movie name was Shashi Kapoor tied in ropes and many people surrounding him and he is trying to pull the ropes and fighting with them.
Over the years this image could not erase from my memory. And from the movie name which I had in my mind I imagine that the hero is struggling for something or may be his life has become a ‘Sangram’.
As I grow, I keep searching for this movie for many years. After coming into contact with this blog and getting more familiar to internet and continued searching, I finally came to know that the movie is not ‘Sangram’ but it is ‘Jeewan Sangram’.
Then I started looking for this movie or its songs. There was not a single song from this movie which was popular or which I remember to have listened to anywhere. Even I think this movie may not have been a successful movie of its time.
Well, as few years passed, I found one song available on YouTube which was picturised on Manmohan (and I was planning for an article on him …). Then one day I find this today’s song and listened to its one part (that time I think only one part was available) and then forgotten again.
Finally, months back when I checked this song again and realized that this song is a song praising our ‘mother land’ and love for the country, or this was a ‘patriotic song’ to put it straight.
Now coming to the image that I had in my mind since my childhood. Well I watched this movie online and there is no such scene in this movie, where Shashi Kapoor is tied with ropes.
However, there is one scene in the end of the movie where Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) himself come out and face bullets from all corners where the Police has already been waiting for him to surrender, but he embraces death to make people awake and thinking that his sacrifice will inspire people to fight the Britishers. (So, one can understand how deep impact this scene has on my impressionable mind then, and it kept haunting me all these years 🙂 )
**
As I watched this movie in parts and not at one go, I keep noting many things which I would like to share for information only.
The movie starts with the following offerings;
“The makers of this movie offer their homage to Baba Gurdit Singh whose courage and vision steered S.S. Koma Gata Maru back to Indian Shores.
Baba Sohan Singh Bhakna – Founder-President of the Ghadar Party (in California USA) – an undisputed leader of the early revolutionaries.
Kartar Singh Sarabha – Stormy petrel of the Indian Revolution. Fearless Fire-brand who was sentenced to death at the tender age of nineteen only.
And those thousands of others, who like the hero of our film, gave of their utmost to their motherland, but whom history has cruelly ignored…”
And that gives us an idea of the storyline of this movie.
The movie starts with 29th September 1914, Budge Budge dockyard Calcutta where the ship ‘S.S.Koma Gata Maru’ carrying Indians abroad reached from Canada, where entry to these peoples was denied.
After the titles we are introduced by the commentator …
“Door deshon se aaye huye ye wo kaumi parwaane hain, jo desh ke liye apna sab kuchh lutaakar Bharat ko aazaad karaane ke liye aaye
Duniya ki sabse badi sultanat ke khilaaf baghaawat ka jhanda lehraate huye, inn muthhi bhar janbaazon ne, jaise hi apne desh ki dharti par qadam rakhaa to inka swaagat … (goliyon se huaa)” …
The leader of these Baba Gurdit Singh Sandhu from Sarhali and other patriots were also involved in ‘Ghadar Party’ activities to fight with the British and make India free from Britishers.
Baba Gurdit Singh’s initial idea that “The visions of men are widened by travel and contacts with citizens of a free country will infuse a spirit of independence and foster yearnings for freedom in the minds of the emasculated subjects of alien rule” lead him to gather patriotic Indians from abroad whom he want to take to Canada, however entry to all of them was denied and they were sent back to Calcutta. Reaching Calcutta all these leaders and their associates were attacked by British resulting brutal killings of many and arrests of many, except Baba Gurdit Singh, Baba Nidhan Singh and Arjun Singh who fled away.
After this the main protagonist in the movie Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) with Baba Nidhan Singh and Sachin Sanyal continue the cause of Ghadar Party and preparations for the mutiny in ‘British Indian Army’ which is planned for 21st Feb’1915.
However British Police lured one of the activists who becomes informer for them and the mutiny is advanced for 19th Feb.
Here I would stop myself from detailing of what happens next 😊 the movie is available online and those who are interested to watch it may watch it at least once. (I watched it full once and then repeat for many parts during the preparation of this article.)
The tagline in the posters of this movie mentioned it as ‘The flaming story of a people’s revolt against tyranny’
I also like the dialogues in this movie and why not after all they are written by Gulzar and Qamar Jalalabadi.
“Marna bhala hai uska, jo apne liye jiye,
Jeeta hai wo, jo mar chuka hai desh ke liye”
Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) says this to Baba Nidhan Singh insisting him to allow to go to Calcutta to meet Sachin Sanyal instead of Baba Nidhan Singh going there and endangering his life.
The most interesting and introspecting dialogues are between Om Shivpuri and Shashi Kapoor.
As police gets the information and they start following Arjun Singh (Shashi Kapoor) from Calcutta in train and Arjun Singh after a scuffle and fight with them gets injured and jumped into a river and finally landing in the ‘khema’ where Om Shivpuri is the leader who has seen the 1857 revolution and how the infighting, treachery and back-stabbing among ourselves helped the British. He has lost all the hopes of people rising again to fight the British.
Ye ajeeb naashukaron ka desh hai beta
Ajeeb bujhdil hai yahaan ke log
Arjun Singh’s reply is;
Is desh ki haalat
In logon ki khudgarzi
Mujhse chhuppi nahin hai
Lekin ye khudgarzi, ye loot-khasot jab aakhri had ko pahunch jaati hai tabhi inquilaab ka waqt aata hai, aur aaj …aaj wo waqt aa gaya hai.
Seeing hope in Arjun Singh, Om Shivpuri extends support to Arjun Singh in the cause of ‘freedom’ …
Further story is how all these patriots fights the British till their end …

As I have mentioned above earlier, I thought this song was only one part, but then I find second part and when checked through HFGK Vol-V (1971-80) it mentioned this song as a ‘three part’ song. I found audio for the first part with an extra stanza which, I think, was not included in the movie. I already had located videos of other two parts except the first part. Later on, I also found the video for the first part of this song. I am thankful to all the uploaders who have uploaded this movie and its songs on YouTube.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 38
——————————————————————————————
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal-1965’. This movie was introduced on the blog on this day ten years back viz on 5th July 2009.
The movie ‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal-1965’ is known mainly for its ‘epic song’ ‘Caravan guzar gaya’ written by Neeraj. The movie made its debut in the blog with this song.
Whenever I come across ‘milestone movies’, ‘epic movies’, or ‘the movies which have left a mark in the annals of Hindi film history’, I feel the urge to find out more about such movies and to share its songs on the blog if the opportunity for that still exists. I get an opportunity to share a song from this mvie today. I think that it is the first opportunity for me to cover a song composed by Roshan, one of my favourite music directors.
Though only one song from the movie is supposed to be left over, I found out that the number of leftover songs is not one but two.
As per HFGK this movie had seven songs (including one multiple version song) only. Movie information on wiki listed eight songs for this movie.
The one song not mentioned in HFGK is a song which plays in the background when the titles of the movie keeps rolling, and this is the song we are going to present here today.
The other remaining song from the movie is penned by Manmohan Tiwari according to HFGK. However, the movie titles only mention the name of Neeraj ji as lyricist for this movie.
So I guess that the today’s song is also written by Neeraj ji.
(I would request our editors and knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.)
Now, for all such movies and their songs where we wish to cover the relevant details, trivia or biographical information about the ‘cast and crew’ of that movie we always have few posts which comes with such information.
Details of this movie and its songs, including trivia etc are covered in posts on the songs , viz.
Mero sainyya gulabiyo ko phool
Isko bhi apnaata chal usko bhi apnaata chal
and
Caravan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe
After today’s post, just one more song from the movie is left to be covered. I can say that the remaining song will waiting for an appropriate occasion before that song gets covered. 🙂
Looking back at this date ten years back, songs from following movies were covered on the blog on 05th July 2009;

‘Nai Umar Ki Nai Fasal’ was directed by R. Chandra for Shri. Vishwabharati Films. It had Tanuja, Rajeev, Leela Chitin, Shobhna Samarth, M.A. Latif, Renuka Rai, S.K. Prem, Ulhas, Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khurshid Bawra and others.
Music for this movie was composed by Roshan and lyrics were written by Neeraj and Manmohan Tiwari (one song).
Today’s song is sung by Bhupinder Singh. It is a background song that plays with titles rolling on the screen. This song also has a second part which appears at the end of the movie.
Today’s song is a motivational song that seeks to inspire the new generation to bring about a positive change in the society for the upliftment of all. Thisis is in complete contrast to the debut song of this this movie ten years back on the blog, which was a ‘melancholic song’ (as Atul ji mentioned in his post ten years ago).
Let us now listen to today’s song …

Part I

Nayi umar ke naye sitaaro
Nayi fasal ki nayi bahaaro
Khilo phalo is tarah ke
Poore chaman ka poora libaas badley
Nayi umar ke naye sitaaro
Nayi fasal ki nayi bahaaro
Likho jawaani ke naam khat wo
Ke phool ban jaayen khaar saare
Be-roshni ki lagaao kalmen
Zameen pe ugne lagen ae sitaare
Badaldo pichchhle hisaab aise
Ulat do gham ke naqaab aise
Ke sab ki sab ye zameen badley
Ke sab ka sab ye aakaash badley
Nayi umar ke naye sitaaro
Nayi fasal ki nayi bahaaro
Nayi umar ke naye sitaaro
Nayi fasal ki nayi bahaaro]
