#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Remembrance Day – Shashi Kapoor)
—————————————

Today we pay our tributes to yesteryears’ actor Shashi Kapoor. He passed away on this day 4th December in 2017. He was born on 18th March’1938.

On this occasion I am presenting a song from the 1978 movie ‘Aahuti’.

Shashi Kapoor was a regular feature in many of the movies in the seventies and many multi-starrer movies especially. Today’s movie is one such movie which I had watched in my childhood and being a story of three brothers it touched me and since then is there in my memory. Though, I do not remember the whole movie now except for its songs.

‘Aahuti’ was directed by Ashok Bhushan for ‘Basho Productions, Bombay’.

It had Rajendra Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Rakesh Roshan, Zaheera, Asha Sachdev, Kamini Kaushal, Ajit, Madan Puri, Paintal, Krishan Dhawan, Raj Mehra, Kuljeet, Dulari, Birbal, Rajan Kapoor, Ranjana Sachdev, Preeti Ganguly, Ranbeer Raj, Pal Sharma, Darshan Arora, Dharmveer, Master Romi, Master Rajesh, Master Ravi and others.

Pradeep Kumar makes a ‘special appearance’ in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.04.1978.

This movie had six songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Following is the list of songs in this movie;

S.No. Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Is duniya mein kaun sanwaare sab ke bigde kaam (Part-1) Mahendra Kapoor, Anuradha Paudwal, chorus
02 Is duniya mein kaun sanwaare sab ke bigde kaam (Part-2) Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Manhar, chorus
03 Kaash aisaa hota Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, chorus 04.08.2016
04 Saathi mere saathi rut aati jaati Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, chorus 22.07.2018
05 Naukri sau ki hazaar ki Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, chorus
06 Jugni ik ladki ka naam Lata Mangeshkar, chorus 04.04.2021

So far three songs from the above have been earlier posted on the blog.

I had mentioned in my previous post with a song of this movie that the two songs from this movie which brings back memories for me are ‘Is duniya mein kaun sanwaare sab ke bigde kaam’ and the second one is the today’s song ‘Naukri sau ki hazaar ki’. This song is lying since long now and today we are going to listen and watch it ‘remembering Shashi Kapoor’ and also Parveen Babi both of whom appeared in many movies of the ‘seventies’.

Let us now listen to today’s beautiful song which is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal. The song is lip-synced by Shashi Kapoor and Parveen Babi respectively.

Mushkil raahon se aksar
Bachkar log nikalte hain

Phoolon ke jo aashiq hain
Wo kaanton pe chalte hain
Chhod ke galiyaan bahaar ki

Wo kyaa jaanen fark hai kyaa
Dil mein aur dukaanon mein
Dil amaanat dildaar ki

Naukari sau ki hazaar ki

Barasengi ban ke ghataa ye
Apni Jo pyaas hai

Naukari sau ki hazaar ki
Keemat nahin hoti pyaar ki
Pyaar anmol hai
ik meethaa bol hai
Meethi-meethi baatein yaar ki

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 11
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –- – –

Today 18th July 2022 is the ‘tenth remembrance’ anniversary of the only ‘Superstar’ of Indian cinema ‘Rajesh Khanna’.

He was born on 29th December’1942 and he passed away on 18th July’2012.

I was supposed to send a detailed post with a song from Rajesh Khanna movies of ‘1983’. However in this ‘episode’ I am presenting a song from a Rajesh Khanna movie of 1984, as we move further to Rajesh Khanna filmography year wise from the last post.

I will come back to my earlier planned posts in this series later in future posts.

The year ‘1984’ saw as many as nine Kaka movies released during it. The list of these nine movies is as given below.

SNo Movie Title Director Passed by Censor Board
01 Aaj Kaa M.L.A. Raam Avtaar Dasari Narayana Rao 21.01.1984
02 Aashaa Jyoti Dasari Narayana Rao 16.04.1984
03 Aawaaz Shakti Samanta 27.10.1984
04 Dharam Aur Qaanoon Joshi 03.08.1984
05 Durgaa *(a very special appearance) Shibu Mitra 07.04.1984
06 Hum Dono B.S. Glaad 21.12.1984
07 Maqsad K. Bapaiah 30.04.1984
08 Naya Kadam K. Raghvendra Rao 15.09.1984
09 Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai Sohanlal Kanwar 19.04.1984

I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Asha Jyoti’.

“Aashaa Jyoti” was directed by Dasari Narayana Rao for ‘Keycey Films International, Madras’. It was produced by Kowayi Chezhiyan.

It had Rajesh Khanna, Rekha, Reena Roy, Madan Puri, Asrani, Om Shivpuri, Deena Pathak, Asha Lata, Roohi, Smriti Wariyar, Roopesh Kumar, Madhukar and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Dasari Narayana Rao. Dialogues of this movie were written by Raj Baldevraj.

Editing of this movie was done by B Krishna Raju.

‘Asha Jyoti’ or ‘Aashaa Jyoti’ had five songs in it.

All these five songs in this movie were written by Anjaan and music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

I had watched this movie in the year of its released. I remember I had liked this movie very much. This movie was a remake of Telugu movie ‘Srivari Muchatlu (1981).
The story of this movie has been discussed with the song ‘aayi pehli milan ki wo raat’, which was posted on the blog on 10.10.2019 presented by Peevesie’s Mom ji.
Interested reader can read about the story of this movie in this post.

I liked this movie because the role that Rajesh Khanna played suited him and the role had many shades of ‘emotions’ which was Kaka’s forte. The role also suited his characteristic mannerisms which he excelled in.

The movie had good music too which was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

However, the movie was not much successful at box-office, though its reviews were all good.

I had earlier shared a song ‘neele ambar ke do naina’ which I like very much. Today’s song is another song from this movie which I like. It is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Reena Roy.

“Asha Jyoti” was released in 1984. So that is almost thirty-eight years back.
If we go back ten years further to the year ‘1974’ that is around forty-eight years back from now. Following movies of Rajesh Khanna were released in that year i.e., ‘1974’.

(Rajesh Khanna movies – 1974)

SNo Movie Title Director Passed by Censor Board
01 Aap Ki Kasam J. Om Prakash 17.04.1974
02 Ajnabi Shakti Samanta 18.09.1974
03 Humshakal Jamboo 19.04.1974
04 Prem Nagar K.S. Prakash Rao 15.05.1974
05 Roti Manmohan Desai 11.10.1974

Let us now come back to today’s song which is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal. Rajesh Khanna and Reena Roy lip-sync the song.

Lyrics are penned by Anjaan. Music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Let us enjoy today’s song and pay our tributes to Rajesh Khanna.

Hullo Atuldom

Who is a dainty person?

Dainty is an adjective. If you describe a movement, person, or object as dainty, you mean that they are small, delicate, and pretty.

There is this actress from my growing up years who was very Dainty. Petite is another word that could be used to describe her. Not only was she loved by the audiences she was also a favourite of all her co-stars. Sanjeev Kumar would treat her like a child (as admitted by this actress in an interview) possibly an after effect of their first movie together where he played her father. Even though after that they went on to co-star in many movies and enacting a whole gamut of relations. Rishi Kapoor and Mithun were friends of hers and she has co-starred opposite Vinod Khanna in her younger days and also played mother roles to his sons in movies of the new millennium. She has paired opposite Amitabh Bachchan in 2 films in the ’70s and was seen in a brief role in a Bachchan starrer in 2015. She was often heroine to Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Shashi Kapoor and was also comfortable sharing her heroes and screen space with actresses of her time be it Rekha, Shabana, even Sridevi. She has said that Dharmendra, who was her father-in-law’s (Hemant Kumar) friend, used to be very protective. Who wouldn’t be considering how dainty or petite or small she looked in comparison to half her heroes.

When I think back, I find that I remember many of her songs and used to like all of them. “Sun ri pawan, pawan purvaiyya”; “neend churaaye, chain churaaye”; “chhatri na khol udd jaayegi”; “tera saath hai toh mujhe kya kami hai”; “megha re megha re mat pardes jaa re”; “zindagi ek naatak hai”- all of them and some more, are on my list of personal favourites.

Oh I didn’t say who I was speaking of. Indira Chattopadhaya is our birthday girl today. She is called Moushumi Chatterjee in the film industry. She has been entertaining audiences since her debut in Bengali films in 1967. Her Hindi debut happened in 1972 with “Anuraag” where she played a blind girl opposite Vinod Mehra. She was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare in 2015.

“Itni Si Baat” ( 1981) was a movie directed by Madhu M. (possibly the only Hindi movie by him) and produced by K. Raghavan (not heard this name too). Kalyanji- Anandji were the music directors with Viju Shah, Babla, Anil Mohile as assistants; and Anjaan was the lyricist. Asha Bhonsle, Alka Yagnik, Hemlatha, Amit Kumar and Kishore Kumar are the playback singers (as per the titles of the movie) It had Sanjeev Kumar- Moushumi Chatterjee heading a cast of Tamanna, Arun Govil, Urmila Bhatt, Asit Sen, Roopesh Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Baby Geetha, Master Gautam, Aashoo, Kesho Rana, Pardesi etc. Madan Puri and Om Prakash were in guest appearances.

I have seen this movie a few times on television and like its story. It is basically a story about a couple who are leading a harmonious monetarily comfortable life till they become parents. Then the wife starts feeling that things will ease up if she too takes up a job but the husband feels that is unnecessary. Also he has a feeling that she can help by being a little thrifty around the house and that would be help enough. To prove their points the couple switch duties and the wife finds a job and the husband starts looking after the house. They agree to experiment on this for a short period. What follows is chaos for the husband at home and wife at work and some hilarious moments. The movie comes to a close with the two realizing जिसका काम उसी को साजे और करे तो बुद्धु / डंडा/ ठेंगा बाजे’ “jiska kaam usiko saajhe, aur kare toh buddhu/ danda/ thenga baaje” (roughly translating to “every person is an expert in his own field”). Of course I don’t recall what happened to their monetary issue. 🙂

Today’s song happens at the beginning of the movie when Raja (Sanjeev Kumar) and Asha (Moushumi) have just expressed their love to each other. The song sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal, runs through titles of the movie showing courtship, marriage and start of the family.

Here is wishing our cute Moushumi a very Happy birthday.

Hullo Atuldom

This post is to say Yyiippeeee to one more movie of the ’70s.
“Badaltey Rishtey” (1978) produced by Sudesh Kumar and directed by R Jhalani, had story by Mahendra Saral.

This movie had a very funny story-line—

Rishi Kapoor and Reena Roy are in love but there is some astrologer who predicts that Reena roy is slated to loose her husband within a month of her marriage. So she decides to accept Jeetendra’s proposal of marriage so that she can save Rishi Kapoor and marry him later.
But like all Hindi movies the heroine has to fall in love with her husband. Then she takes it upon herself to save her husband from Rishi Kapoor’s plans to kill Jeetendra. But it turns out in the end that Jeetendra all along knew what who was upto and that Rishi Kapoor was only play acting in conjunction with Reena Roy’s brother to make her realize that “pati hi parmeshwar hota hai”
a very typical family drama movie.

This is what I had written in the comments to one of songs of the film. Recently I found out that A. K. Hangal was the astrologer who happens to be Reena Roy’s brother’s (Asrani) father-in-law who makes that weird prediction that leads to the twists and turns in the movie.
Four out of the five songs, in this film, were written by Anjaan and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist for meri-saanson-ko-jo-mahka-rahi-hai/ . Suman Kalyanpur, Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Kishore Kumar, Mohd. Rafi and Mahendra Kapoor were the playback singers.
The four songs, from this film, already present on the blog are

Song Date posted
Na jaane kaise pal me badal jaate hai 19 November 2008
Meri saanson ko jo mahkaa rahi hai 20 November 2009
Tum chaahe hamko pasand na karo 1 June 2019
Wo wo na rahe jinke liye ham thhey beqaraar 20 November 2019

Here is the fifth and final song. I had mentioned this song, in the comments of this post.. It is a romantic genre song where we see Rishi Kapoor trying to get Reena out of her bad mood. They are talking about ‘kar toh daro mat yaar, daro toh karo mat pyaar’.

This seemed to be the mood for many of the songs featuring Chintu (Rishi Kapoor’s pet name) in the 70s. Remember “Khullam khulla pyar karenge hum dono”. Looks like he didn’t believe in hiding his feelings from the world. That was evident in those times too, when all other actors and actresses hid their personal love stories behind the “we are just good friends” refrain, we could see Chintu with Neetu being open about their relation. An older Chintu was known to voice his opinions on the various social media channels about things that he felt was not correct or were out-of-place. Infact, Chintu’s commissioned biography is also titled “Khullam Khulla- Rishi Kapoor Uncensored”. That book has many interesting tales from his life about how his father asked his mother’s permission before casting him in the role of the young Raj in “Mera Naam Joker” which went on to fetch Chintu his first award of Best Child Artist at the National film awards that year.

He goes on to describe how he sneaked away from the conversation at the dinner table between his parents and started preening before the mirror and practicing his signature so that he can be prepared to give Autographs. In the book, Chintu also mentions how he was chosen for Bobby and how there was no great introduction scene for his character even though he was the film-maker’s son. That means there was no NEPOTISM there or special privileges given to him by Raj Kapoor, infact for the song “main shaayar toh nahin” the dance director was giving steps to Aruna Irani and not Chintu (as mentioned in the book); that explains Chintu’s awkward movements in that song. But he had a sense of rhythm that saw him shake a leg as if he was an accomplished dancer.

4rd September is the first birthday of Chintu after he lost his battle with the dreaded C in April this year. He would have been 68. We have enough of his work to entertain us for years to come. Thanks to the various channel and other video sharing platforms we can relish his songs where he dances with a Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Madhuri Dixit, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Poonam Dhillon, and all the heroines that he had worked with from his debut (as an adult) opposite Dimple in Bobby (1973).

Here is the last song from Badaltey Rishtey in the voices of Anuradha Paudwal and Kishore Kumar.

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Welcome to today’s post (albeit one day late) under this series. Today’s post under this series is coming after a long gap of almost two years, though in between I had written two articles on Rajesh Khanna’s anniversaries.

29th December 2018 is the 76th birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29.12.1942-18.07.2012).

In the previous article under this series we had a song from the ‘1978 movie ‘Chakravyuh’ and today we move forward to the year ‘1979’ …

I had mentioned it earlier and our Atul ji has also been writing this that by ‘mid-seventies’ the Rajesh Khanna magic started declining and his ‘golden period’ was almost over.

Why I am writing ‘almost over’ was because though his movies were failing at the ‘box-office’ they were still coming and he was seen in doing many different types of roles.

The difference was that his movies were not getting commercial success or they do not generate the same hysteria as his movies had been from ‘1969 to 1975’ or we can say from the period of ‘Aradhana’ to ‘Prem Kahaani’.

In ‘1976’ we had his much awaited and talked about movie ‘Mehboobaa’ directed by Kaka’s favorite director Shakti Samanta and the ‘team’ of RD-Anand Bakshi-Kishore together though creating the magical ‘mere naina saawan bhaadon’, ‘parbat ke peechhe’, etc it was not successful at the ‘box-office’.

In ‘1977’ Kaka had a ‘hit’ in ‘Chhaila Baabu’. And the critically acclaimed ‘Palkon Ki Chhaaon Mein’…

‘1978’ again was not seen as good for him though his performances in ‘Chakravyuha’ and ‘Naukari’ were appreciated by the critics.

If we go through the filmography of Rajesh Khanna for these years i.e. 1976 to 1979, we can see his seeking different roles like and some of them like a ‘common man’ or ‘man next door’ viz. in ‘Mahaachor’, ‘Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein-1977’ (where he played a ‘postman’), ‘Chakravyuha-1978’, ‘Bhola-Bhala-1978’- an insurance agent (another role is of a ‘dacoit),

Then we can just see the range of directors he was working with for example if we talk of his ‘lean period’ or I can say those years where he was still a ‘under current’ existing strongly and waiting to hit on the ‘top’ again;

He had movies with directors like B.R. Chopra, Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Narinder Bedi, Ramanand Sagar, Mehmood, Joy Mukherji, Omprakash and his favorite Shakti Samant.

1979 10.01.1979 Jantaa Hawaldaar Mehmood
1979 18.04.1979 Amar Deep K. Vijayan and R. Krishnamurti

(* I have not included his movies with ‘Special Appearance’ like ‘Tinku’, ‘Hatyaara’, ‘Naya Bakraa’ etc in above list and corrected myself by including ‘Prem Bandhan’ for ‘1978’ which I missed to include in my previous article 😊)

And if we include ‘awards’ in our discussion he was nominated for the Best Actor Award by BFJA (Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards) for ‘Mehboobaa’, ‘Anurodh’, ‘Chakravyuha’, and ‘Amar Deep’ during this period.

He won the ‘All India Critics Association Award’ for ‘Best Actor’ for the movie ‘Chhaila Babu-1977’.

At the ‘Filmfare’ awards he was nominated in ‘Best Actor’ category for the movie ‘Amar Deep-1979’ (and this nomination for him at ‘Filmfare’ came after 1974 when he was nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ award for ‘Prem Nagar-1974’).

(for that matter sometimes, I think that he was loved very much by ‘Bengal’ and they loved him the most. I have a personal experience related to this, which I intend to share in my future articles under this series).

In my previous posts I start giving the details of the movies of Rajesh Khanna in that particular year of the song I was presenting therewith. And so, in the last two posts where we discussed the songs of Rajesh Khanna movies of 1977 and 1978, I am presenting today’s post with a song of a movie released in 1979.

His movie list of 1979 is as given below;

SNo Movie Year Passed by Censor Board
01 Jantaa Hawaldaar 1979 10.01.1979
02 Nayaa Bakraa 1979 16.02.1979*
03 Amardeep 1979 18.04.1979
04 Muqaabalaa 1979 14.09.1979*

(*special appearance)

(So, that is one change that I have made in my ‘presentation’ of the posts in this series. And, while I find it interesting, I am sure that readers will also enjoy this.)

Because, in this journey we have started from the years where Rajesh Khanna’s golden period was over and his movies in row were getting flopped at the box-office and he was ‘trying hard’ to get over to the ‘top’ again.

And though his movies, acting wise some the best of his career, had miserable failures at the box office his fans were still there and while Kaka was ‘as always’ in his heart saying to them ‘is kadar itnaa tumhe ham pyaar kartein hain’, his fans were waiting and more fans were waiting, to welcome him back again with ‘tum nahin jaanoge, tum nahin maanoge ‘kis kadar kitnaa’ tumhe ham pyaar kartein hain’ …

With this movie ‘Amar Deep-1979’ we move to the ‘eighties’ where Kaka’s style and mannerisms hit the screens again and Rajesh Khanna days were back again reaching to its heights (in terms of number of his number of movies in a single year) …

***

‘Amar Deep-1979’ was directed by K. Vijayan and R. Krishnamurti for ‘Sujatha International, Madras’. Presented by K. Balaje.

It had Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Shabana Azmi, Deven Verma, A.K. Hangal, Roopesh Kumar, Bindu and others. Ashok Kumar had a special appearance in the movie while Mithun Chakravarty had a ‘guest appearance’ in this movie. This movie introduced actress Deepa (from South).

Dialogues of this movie were written by Ali Raza, and Prem Kapoor was the dialogue director. Editing for this movie was done by B. Kandaswamy.

Music of this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This movie had four songs written by Anand Bakshi. Anuradha Paudwal, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar had given their voices to these songs.

Rafi Saab had sung a song (few lines) which appears at the end of the movie and had already been posted on the blog here.

In the very beginning of the titles of the movie ‘sincere thanks’ have been expressed to Kaifi Azmi and Rafi Saab, so I guess that these lines were written by Kaifi Azmi.

HFGK Vol-V does not mention this song in the list of songs of this movie. (However, I would request editors to correct the number of songs of this movie to ‘five’ on the blog, with the today’s song it will be (3/5))

One other song from this movie ‘koi na tere pehle thhi’ was posted earlier on the blog in 2013.

I get to watch this movie after Rajesh Khanna’s sad demise in 2012 on a TV Channel.

Let us now enjoy today’s song. The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi.

Song-Tum nahin maanoge (Amardeep)(1979) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge
Iss kadar itnaa tumhe
Ham pyaar kartein hain
Zindagi hai tumse
Har khushi hai tumse
Hum tumhaare saamne iqraar kartey hain
Tum nahin maanoge
tum nahin jaanoge
Kiss kadar kitna tumhen hum pyaar kartein hain
Aankh jhuk jaati hai
saans ruk jaati hai
Jab kabhi hum pyaar ka ijhaar kartey hain
Tum nahin maanoge

Arey tum nahin jaanoge ae

Har ik din ahaa milan ka din
Ahaa
Har ik din ahaa milan ka din
Har ik raat milan ki raat

Ab tumse kahen kaise
Lab pe jo ruki hai baat
Hum kahaan us baat se inkaar karte hain
Kiss kadar kitna tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge ae

Tum nahin jaanoge ae

Rut badli samaa badlaa aa aa
Rut badli samaa badlaa
Lehraaya naya mausam
Aise mein kaho tum to
Kaanon mein kahen kuchh hum

Jo kaho manzoor hum sarkaar kartey hain
Ham tumhaare saamne iqraar kartey hain
Tum nahin manaoge
Tum nahin jaanoge

Jhaanko to mere dil mein
Samjho kya kahaani hai

Ye apni mohabbat ki
Badi pyaari nishaani hai
Oon oon oon oon oon oon oon
Ye apni mohabbat ki
Badi pyaari nishaani hai
Dillagi kya yoon sarey bazaar karte hain
Are iss kadar itna tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge
Kiss kadar kitnaa tumhe hum pyaar kartey hain

Iss kadar itnaa tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge

Blog Day : 3550 Post No. : 14243

Hullo Atuldom

7th April 2018 is the 76th birthday of Ravi Kapoor- unbelievable. He has been around in the entertainment industry/ Bollywood since 1959 i.e. close to 60 years. WOW!!! That is a really long time. And we are fans of his and know him as JEETENDRA.

His first on-screen appearance was in V.Shantaram’s “Navrang” as Sandhya’s character’s double. Post that he got his first major break in Shantaram’s “Geet Gaya Pattharo ne”. 1967 saw him in diametrically different avatars in “Gunahon ka Devta” and “Farz”—and 51 years after “Farz” the epithet of “Jumping Jack” still reminds us of Jeetuji and his vigorous dancing prowess. The T-shirt and white shoes became his trademark and suited his lean frame. He has appeared in only about 200 films of which only 80 or so were made-in-south movies most of them remakes of successful Telugu, Tamil and Kannada movies. He was the preferred North-Indian star of that era as far as T. Rama Rao, L.V. Prasad, Rama Naidu and such other South Indian filmmakers were concerned. But there was another set of films that had him in completely subdued character as in “Parichay”, “Mere Humsafar”, “Khushboo”, “Kinara”, “Dharti Kahe Pukaar Ke” and a long list of other movies.

He was loved by the audiences with any heroine he was paired right from Rajshree, Babita, Mala Sinha, Asha Parekh, Nanda and Mumtaz to the next set of ladies like Hema Malini, Rekha, Leena Chandavarkar, Reena Roy, Moushumi, and a few movies with Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Neetu Singh and finally Sridevi and JayaPrada.

The above list looks like the roster of the heroines of the film industry. The only name that doesn’t feature in that list is that of Smita Patil as the only movie that featured the two, Smita was opposite to Dharamendra. And the list doesn’t name Rakhee, Jaya Bhadhuri (Bachchan), Bindiya Goswami, Radha, Bhanupriya, Madhavi, Meenakshi Seshadri, Madhuri Dixit etc. as they did only one or two movies each with Jeetuji.:) Phew! That is one long list. I am sure there are other heroines whose names are missing here. 🙂

As far as his acting style is concerned he must have been good to have lasted this long. I am sure people will say that he has survived on his dancing abilities alone, but then his movies with Gulzar at the helm didn’t have any dancing. He was a complete package of n actor who was comfortable with action, emotion, just standing and singing; dancing and singing.

His last silver screen appearance was in Farah Khan’s “Om Shanti Om” in the party song. He also produced a few movies, a business which is being looked after by his able daughter Ekta.

Today on his birthday I thought of all the possible songs and zeroed in on a song that is heard very often on the radio– mostly Vividh Bharathi, my staple source of film songs for years. It is from the 1976 released, L.V. Prasad produced “Udhar Ka Sindoor”. It was a remake of the Telugu movie “Manasullu Devudu”. The cast was headed by Jeetendra, Reena Roy and Asha Parekh with Prema Narayan, Asrani, Dheeraj Kumar, Manju Bansal (Asrani), Om Shivpuri and Urmila Bhat in supporting cast.

Just as a matter of trivia, here I feel like mentioning that Asha Parekh is the same age as Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan and has co-starred as heroine to Jeetuji and RK but has been AB’s Bhabhi (in movies). Also, another point of interest which should be noted is Asha Parekh’s debut as heroine came in 1959 in “Dil Deke Dekho” and Jeetuji first appeared on-screen in 1959 in “Navrang” but as a character’s double.

Coming back to the movie “Udhar Ka Sindoor” (I sat through it to know what the movie was all about). It is a movie full of emotion- love for sister, love and gratitude towards foster-father; pinning to reunite with a lost sister; some drama on finding the sister, a groom for the foster-sister and then some action towards the end as by then the hero has become an inspector on the chase of a gang that forges currency. As it so happens the leader of the gang is the foster-brother who has to be pulled up for all the wrongs that he has committed including raping the lost-sister. That is why I said it was a movie full of EMOTIONS. And since there are two heroines, who happen to be sisters, there is a dose of sacrificing the hero for one another thrown in for good measure :). The hero is the lucky person as he gets to sing romantic songs with one sister and get married to the other and be worshipped by her since he married her despite her blindness.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal, written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rajesh Roshan was the music director.

Wishing all health and happiness to our “Jumping Jack” Jeetendra.

sab kuchh hai kya suhaana
kho jaayen aaj hum-tum

sab kuchh hai kya suhaana
kho jaayen aaj hum-tum
dekha kare zamaana
ho o o
