Blog Day :

5659 Post No. : 18160

Today’s song is from the film ‘Lakeeren’ (1954).

The film was produced and directed by Harbans. Despite my efforts, I was unable to collect any information about this director. All that I could gather from online sources was that Harbans directed in all 17 films, from 1943 (‘Mr. Jhatpat’) to 1971 (‘Sher e Watan’), acted in 3 films (‘Khoj’ (1953), ‘Bade Sarkar’ (1957) and ‘Bahadur Daaku’ (1966) and wrote 1 song for film ‘Jungle Ka Sher’ (1946).

The Music Director was Hafiz Khan. His name is generally mixed with the singer/MD Hafiz Khan Mastana. Not only on various so-called ‘trustworthy’ sites, blogs, Fb groups, but even in famous books, this ‘Same Name Confusion’ exists. I am tired of correcting this wherever I find it. I have given his details in one of my books also. There were two composers of the same name, operating in the same time period. There was one Hafiz Khan singer, who was given the nickname of Mastana by his senior Meer Sahib. Hafiz Khan Mastana was essentially a singer. He sang in Hindi films from 1938 to 1959 in over 80 films singing about 150 songs, according to one source. He also gave music to 29 Hindi films, from 1940 to 1952. He also acted in about 10 films.

The music director Hafiz Khan was a trained expert Sarangiya (Sarangi player) from Lahore. His first film as a composer was ‘Zeenat’ (1945). The other composers with him here were Meer Sahib and Rafiq Ghaznavi. This film’s music became famous because of the first ever all female qawwaali – “Aahen Na Bharin Shiqwe Na Kiye” in it. Hafiz Khan had also composed 4 melodious songs in this film. He gave music in films ‘Zeenat’ (1945), ‘Humjoli’ (1946), ‘Meharbani’ (1950), ‘Lakeeren’ (1954), ‘Mera Salaam’ (1957) and his last film ‘Shareef Daaku’ (1960).

It is believed that after leaving films, Hafiz Khan migrated to the UK. Reportedly, one of the RMIM members met him in London in the year 2000. There is no further information on him. The composer Hafiz Khan and the singer – composer-actor Hafiz Khan Mastana were two different persons.

The cast of the film consisted of Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jayawant, Sulochana Chatterjee, Sulochana Latkar, Kamal (wife of the comedian Maruti and mother of comedienne Guddi Maruti), Durga Khote, Pran, Tiwari and some others. There were two Sulochanas working in this film. Sulochana Chatterjee was the younger sister of Kamla Chatterjee, an actress and wife of Kidar Sharma, the famous writer and director of Hindi films. Actually, at one time, there were at least five Sulochanas operating at the same time in the Hindi film industry. They did not create ‘Same Name Confusion’ because every Sulochana used her surname, setting her apart from other Sulochanas. There were 3 actresses- Sulochana Sr aka Ruby Myers, Sulochana Latkar and Sulochana Chatterjee. There were 2 singers- Sulochana Chavan and Sulochana Vyas.

Not much is written on Sulochana Latkar, who came in from Marathi films. Sulochana Latkar (born Rangu Diwan; 30 July 1928 – 4 June 2023), known by her screen name Sulochana, was an actress of Marathi and Hindi cinema, who acted in 50 films in Marathi and 248 films in Hindi. She was most known for her performances in Marathi films such as ‘Sasurvas’ (1946), ‘Meeth Bhakar’ (1949), ‘Vahinichya Bangdya’ (1953), ‘Dhakti Jaoo’ (1958) and ‘Sangtye Aika’ (1959) in the lead roles, as well as for the mother roles she played in Hindi cinema right from 1959 film ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ to the year 1995. She and Nirupa Roy epitomized the ‘mother’ roles right from 1959 until the early 1990s.

Sulochana Latkar has illustrious career in both Marathi and Hindi films. She has worked in 248 Hindi films and around 50 Marathi films and made her debut in films in 1946. She was lead actress in Marathi films from 1946 to 1961 with films like ‘Sasurvas (1946), ‘Vahinichya Bangdya’ (1953), ‘Meeth Bhakar’ (1949), ‘Sangtye Aika’ (1959), ‘Laxmi Ali Ghara’, ‘Mothi Manse’, ‘Jivacha Sakha’, ‘Pativrata’, ‘Sukhache Sobti’, ‘Bhaubheej’, ‘Akashganga’ and ‘Dhakti Jau’.

She was often paired opposite Nazir Hussain, Trilok Kapoor and Ashok Kumar throughout her career in Hindi films. She quoted in an interview that she loved playing mother to three actors – Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand and Rajesh Khanna. She often played mother or as close relative in Hindi films with Sunil Dutt as the leading man such as in ‘Heera’, ‘Jhoola’, ‘Ek Phool Char Kaante’, ‘Sujata’, ‘Mehrbaan’ (1967), ‘Chirag’, ‘Bhai Bahen’ (1969), ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, ‘Umar Qaid’, ‘Muqabla’, ‘Jaani Dushman’ and ‘Badle Ki Aag’. She was a regular in films with Dev Anand in the lead roles, where either Dev Anand was her son or relative and some of their films together were ‘Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai’, ‘Pyar Mohabbat’, ‘Duniya’ (1968), ‘Jhonny Mera Naam’, ‘Amir Garib’, ‘Warrant’ and ‘Joshila’.

Since 1969, she often played an on-screen close relative to the character played by Rajesh Khanna and some of their famous films included ‘Dil Daulat Duniya’, ‘Baharon Ke Sapne’, ‘Doli’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Mere Jeevan Saathi’, ‘Prem Nagar, ‘Aakraman’, ‘Bhola Bhala’, ‘Tyaag’, ‘Aashiq Hoon Baharaon Ka’ and ‘Adhikar’ (1986). Her other best known films include ‘Nai Roshni’ (1967), ‘Aaye Din Bahar Ke’, ‘Aaye Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Ab Dilli Dur Nahin’, ‘Majboor’, ‘Gora Aur Kala’, ‘Devar’, ‘Bandini’, ‘Kahani Kismat Ki’, ‘Talaash’ (1969) and ‘Azaad’ (1978).

In 2003, she was awarded the Chitrabhushan Award instituted by the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Chitrapat Mahamandal, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Baburao Painter, one of the founders of the modern Marathi cinema.

Latkar lived in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. She was married at the age of 14. Her daughter’s name is Kanchan Ghanekar who was the wife of Marathi stage superstar Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar.

Latkar died from respiratory failure at Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar, Mumbai, on 4 June 2023. She was 94. Latkar was a recipient of the civilian honour of Padma Shri (1999). She was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2009, she was awarded the Maharashtra Bhushan Award by the Government of Maharashtra.

Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jayawant were a popular leading pair in the 50’s. When a pair becomes popular and their films become hits, the filmmakers make all efforts to rope them in their films. Thus, you find that some pairs have done many films together. For example, Nalini Jaywant and Ashok Kumar acted together in 15 films and she acted with Ajit in 10 films.

In Hindi films, many pairs were popular featuring in many films together, like Dharmendra-Hema Malini or Shahrukh-Kajol etc. When I noticed this, I tried to find out the Top 10 Hindi film jodis with maximum films. I was shocked that some unexpected pairs featured in this list. The most shocking was to find that there is a Guinness World Record of such jodi-films made in India. Can you guess the pair? May not be possible, because this record belongs to Malayalam Films. In this language, the popular film jodi of actor Prem Nazir and actress Sheela worked in 130 films together and 50 of these were Hits ! Their names are recorded in the Guinness Book of world records.

As far as Hindi films are concerned, it is almost impossible to guess who is at number 1 in the race of popular jodis. I too was shocked when I found this. Here is the list of pairs in Hindi films TOP 10 actor -actress jodis , who did maximum numbers of films together.

Serial Number PAIR Number of Films
1. Kader Khan-Aruna Irani 50
2. Mehmood-Aruna Irani 36
3. Jeetendra-Rekha 32
4. Dharmendra-Hema Malini 30
Ashok Kumar-Nirupa Roy
Mehmood-Shubha Khote
5. Jeetendra- Jayaprada 26
6. Nirupa Roy-Trilok Kapoor 24
7 Mithun-Ranjita 23
8. Nirupa Roy-Balraj Sahni 22
9 Nirupa Roy-Bharat bhushan 21
10. Dara Singh-Mumtaz 20
Raj Babbar-Smita Patil
Nirupa Roy-Jairaj

Surprisingly, Nirupa Roy features in 5 pairs! so much for the popular jodi films.

Today’s song is sung by one of my favourite singers, GM Durrani. Enjoy. . .

[I have used information from bollymints.com, CITFS, Upperstall, muVyz, Wiki, marathiactors.com, Ateet ke sitare and my notes, for this article. My Thanks to these.]

Blog Day :

5562 Post No. : 18029

Today’s song is from the film Ghayal-1951.

This social film was produced and directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The music was by Gyan Dutt. In this film, there were 11 songs-including a 2 part song-but unusually there were 7 Lyricists whose songs were sung by 6 different singers. While 5 singers were well known, the sixth name ” Bhola ” was unknown. For a long time no one knew who this Bhola was. Many people thought that Bhola was Bhola Shreshtha, the M.D., but it’s not true. This Bhola was Bulo C Rani,M.D. He joined the industry to be a singer. Khemchand Prakash gave him an opportunity to sing in the film Mehmaan-1942. Later, the same year,Gyan Dutt also gave him songs.Bulo C Rani sang 34 songs in 19 films – initially in his own name, and from 1944 onwards as ‘Bhola’, as he had become a Music Director himself by then, with the film Moorti-1944.

Bulo C Rani was a Science graduate. In those days of early cinema, most people who joined the film line were less educated and mostly from lower middle class or poor families. Not ALL of course. There were few highly educated actors, directors, MDs etc but their number was much less. Actresses like Renuka Devi, Vanmala, Nalini Tarkhad etc. were graduates. Actors like Ashok kumar and Ranjan were graduates. Artistes like Dewan Sharar, Devika rani and Shakuntala Paranjpye had International experience, they wrote books also. Director Nanubhai Vakil and actor Surendra were BA,LL.B.

Coming back to film Ghayal-1951,all songs were good. There were 2 solo songs by one of my favourite singers- G.M.Durrani. If there is a contest to rate the male singers of films, I would include G.M.Durrani in the First 3 singers. The other two would be Rafi and Kishore Kumar. I know some of my friends may not become happy, but the personal choices differ from person to person. It certainly does not mean that other singers were any less liked by me, but the difficulty is, you can’t have 5-6 names in the ” First 3 ” !

Bombay (now Mumbai) was a Maya Nagari for millions of wishful film aspirants from the beginning of Talkie films. Those who joined this industry could be categorised into 3 types….

1. Those who joined and succeeded. They fulfilled their desire to become what they wanted. Many artistes in this category had a filmi background. The rest were the luckiest and those who did hard work to get what they wanted. Some examples- Kapoor khandan, Dev Anand, Lata, Rafi, Bimal Roy etc.

2. ” Jaate the Japan, pahunch gaye cheen” walas. Those who joined to become actor, singer, Lyricist etc, but became something else in the industry and succeeded to a great extent in their compromised career. Some examples Talat, Mukesh, Kanhaiyalal, Mirza Musharraf, Kishore Kumar etc.

3. Those who joined but soon realised that this field was not for them and left as soon as possible. Some examples- most wellknown classical singers and Instrumentalists. One example was that of Mukund Rai Trivedi. He was the joint M.D. of the film Gogola-1966, with Frank D’souza (Frank and Rai). After this film Trivedi left films and joined the family business of Mining in M.P. He prospered therein.

The Maya of Bombay was such that some artistes lived a life like a Prince, but died like a Pauper and in a very bad state. Here are some such cases. In Hindi films, there have been three actors who were very handsome and very lucky but zero in acting – Karan Dewan, Pradeep Kumar and Bharat Bhushan. They all appeared in leading roles opposite all leading actresses of their times. They had the best films, best songs and best roles. Karan Dewan had about 25 Silver Jubilees to his credit and was considered a lucky star. Bharat Bhushan had the most musical films to his credit like ‘Baiju Bawra’ (1952), ‘Shabaab’ (1954) and ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) etc. Pradeep Kumar had ‘Anarkali’ (1953) and ‘Taj Mahal’ (1963).

All three had their brothers producing films for them. Gemini Dewan made films for Karan Dewan, R. Chandra made films for Bharat Bhushan and Kalidas for Pradeep Kumar. Unfortunately, in later years, all three lost everything and died in poverty and neglectful anonymity. Karan Dewan was a manager with BR Chopra’s production company. When he died no one came for his funeral except for Chandrashekhar and Manmohan Krishan from the Cine Artist’s Association. Bharat Bhushan even worked as a watchman in a film studio, in his last days. He too died unsung and only the men from the Association were present at the cremation.

Pradeep Kumar’s case is the saddest. He lay seriously ill in the ICU of a Calcutta nursing home, abandoned by his relatives. The hospital was not discharging him, unless the bills were paid. Luckily one Mr. Pradeep Kondaliya, an estate agent, recognised him, despite his grown beard. He paid the huge outstanding bill of the hospital and took Pradeep Kumar to his home, where he passed away after a few days. He was cremated by his fan. Such is the film industry – cruel and ruthless, where the recognition lasts only till one is successful, and even close relatives desert you in bad times.

Master Shiraz……….During his good times, he had learnt the art of Massaging, as a Hobby and this became his last straw for survival. When film roles were not available, he used to roam about with his kit and do Massaging to earn a living. After doing about 26 films, till Naiya-47, he stopped getting credited in the cast. Now he worked as an extra.

He was last seen in film Guddi-1971- doing massage to Omprakash in one scene. In that film, Dharmendra tells Jaya Bhaduri (Guddi) that Master Shiraj was a star in silent film era. Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee ensured that Shiraj got his name in the film credits of Guddi-71.

Master Shiraj was just one of those unfortunate film artistes who spent their end-time in a very pathetic manner. Some other examples are- actor/singer Parshuram- died on road as a beggar, Singer Vatsala Kumthekar- died on road as a mad beggar,Wasti was seen begging near Liberty cinema and Rattanbai was seen begging near Haji Ali. There are many more such stories. The world of films is the most unpredictable and unless the artiste is wise to secure his future, there is no light at the end of the tunnel !

Film Historian Nalin Shah and Jankidas Mehra have written separate articles and described how film artistes died in penury. Some of the artistes they wrote about were Parshuram, Shanta Hublikar, Cuckoo, Master Nissar, Jaidev, Ghulam Mohd., Saraswati Devi, Rajkumari, Shetty, Chandra Mohan, Mazhar khan, S.U.Sunny, V.M.Vyas, Mahesh kaul, Sulochana (Sr.),Vimi, Vatsala Kumthekar and many more.

Why I wrote about all tragedies here is because my favourite singer G.M.Durrani also faced the same fate. He went to the Top and then went down lower than the bottom in the end.

Ghulam Mustafa Durrani, often abbreviated as G. M. Durrani (1919 – 8 September 1988) was a popular and legendary Indian radio drama artist, playback singer, actor and music director. To his credit, He tried to make his own identity as a playback singer and not try to follow the K. L. Saigal type of singing. G. M. Durrani was notable for Sad songs, Romantic songs, Patriotic songs, Quraan Khani, Qawwalis, Ghazals and Bhajans. He was also one of the first Muslim singers to get to sing Hindu Devotionals. G. M. Durrani was also the most senior Punjabi singer-actor at that time.He was radio drama artist and full-time Singer of Lahore station, Delhi station and Mumbai station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). His native language was Pashto but he had a strong command over Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi. He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto language in Indian movies in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. After the 50s Durrani sang very few songs. Durrani was the disciple of radio broadcaster Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari.

Ghulam Mustafa Durrani was born in Peshawar, British India in 1919. He was a Pathan (Pashtuns) and belonged to the Mohammad Zai Durrani Kabila. His was from a conservative family where even tea was not taken. Milk and lassi were the drinks of choice. When he used to go to those shops and some songs used to be heard, he used to hum along with them. Everyone used to say this boy should go to Bombay (Mumbai) as his voice was very good. The thought of becoming an actor entered his mind as well. He soon ran out of money to make ends meet.

His mother expired when he was very young. Father was educated and of artistic mind but very strict, and the only ally at the home was his loving grandmother. But she could also not protect him from his father’s anger. His mother was expired when he was very young. Father was educated and of artistic mind but very strict, and the only ally at the home was his loving grandmother. But she could also not protect him from his father’s anger.

The last job Durrani did in Peshawar was of at a painter’s shop where an artist always used to hum the tunes of the songs composed by highly respected Composer and Actor Rafiq Ghaznavi. He also started imitating those songs and got appreciation from the colleagues which inspired him. Durrani started practising Rafiq Ghaznavi’s songs and assumed him as his master. During this time, his father took him to another job at his uncle’s motor-part shop. But the artist within didn’t stayed long there and Durrani ran away from the home to Lahore with only 22 rupees in his pocket.

In Lahore, Durrani did odd jobs along with singing on radio. This brought him fame and passion for radio singing which took him to Delhi first then to Bombay. He came to Bombay (now Mumbai) on 14 April 1935. In Mumbai, he got somehow job at Mumbai Radio Station and from here he got recognition. Filmwallahs started calling him to sing.

His singing career started from AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). Durrani was discovered by film producer Sohrab Modi. Modi gave him his first chance around 1935-36 in the movie Said-e-Havas, a historical under the music director, classical musician Bundu Khan popularly known as “Taan-Talwar” Bundu Khan.

When Durrani came to Bombay playback system was not there and one had to act on screen. He didn’t like running around trees and refused to work further. He faced a lot of difficulties and could not return as people would call him a “Kanjar”. Minerva was to close down soon too. He soon joined the Delhi Radio Station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)).

Durrani was working at the Delhi Radio Station where he got acquainted with poet Behzad Lakhnavi whose many ghazals had been sung by Mallika-e-Ghazal (Queen of Ghazals) Begum Akhtar.

He later shifted to the Mumbai Radio Station where he met a big personality at the time, whom he considered one of his ustad (master), Station Director of Bombay station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)), Baba-e-Nasharayat (Father of Broadcasting) Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari who helped the radio station come up a lot. Durrani called Ustad to Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari for honour. (Z. A. Bukhari, was the Station Director of Delhi station and Bombay station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). After the Partition of India and creation of Pakistan, Bukhari was made first director-general of Radio Pakistan (Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation) and later, he served as general manager of PTV (Pakistan Television Corporation).

G. M. Durrani’s salary which was fixed at Rs 40 per month was soon fixed. Here he was working as a Drama Artist. He was soon counted as one of the best drama artist on the radio those days. Over a period of three years his salary had gone up to Rs 70 per month. But fate would soon call him back to films.

Later 1939-40, when the concept of playback singing started he was the first to lend his voice for a film titled Bahurani. The film was made by Sagar Movietone and its music director was Rafiq Ghaznavi. Durrani was then working as a full-time Singer in AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). Those were British days and they were not allowed to do any private recordings. But Ghaznavi insisted. Durrani laid down some conditions, like; the recording should be fixed on a Sunday night so that no outsiders would be allowed to enter the studio. Secondly, he said that his name shouldn’t appear in credit titles or on discs. The song was a duet with Miss Rose, an Anglo-Indian, who didn’t have much experience as a singer. He was paid Rs.75 for the song as against his salary of Rs.70 a month at AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)). He then chucked up his job on 31 December 1940 and decided to concentrate fully on his film career.

Thereafter he sang for, among others, noted music directors like Khawaja Khurshid Anwar, friend Naushad, Shankar Rao Vyas and A. R. Qureshi (Better known as Alla Rakha, Pandit Ravi Shanker’s famous tabla accompanist) for films like Mirza Ghalib, Humlog, Magroor, Shama, Namaste, Sabak and scores of others. He became very popular. Many singers started their careers with him and he inspired many others too.

He was the idol of Mohammed Rafi who imitated him in the initial days. Now what could be a better tribute to singer than that, that the symbol of divinity in the Indian Music Industry, Mohammad Rafi, followed him. In fact, in 1944 Rafi recorded what he considered his first Hindi language song for the film Gaon ki Gori (1944) for Shyam Sunder, “aji dil ho kaaboo mein to dildaar ki aisi taisi” with G. M. Durrani and chorus.

Geeta Dutt also started her career in her break through movie Do Bhai with the song Aaj Preet Ka Naata toot gaya, a duet with G. M. Durrani for S. D. Burman.

Similarly, Haye Chorre Ki Jaat Badi Bewafa, a duet with G. M. Durrani, was Lata’s first song for composer, Naushad.

Durrani has sung many songs during his career. His output later reduced. According to a story he was influenced not to sing for some time after his Hajj visit and Rafi then helped him get back to singing but by then his career was over. Music composer Khawaja Khurshid Anwar in his first film Kurmai (Punjabi-1941) took Durrani as his assistant and later gave him the film Angoori (1943) as music director.

G. M. Durrani was very famous as radio drama artist of Delhi station and Mumbai station of AIR (Akashvani (radio broadcaster)).
In the period of K. L. Saigal – Surinder, Khan Mastana and G.M. Durrani were also famous. G. M. Durrani was one of the 40s famous playback singers. Durrani tried to make his own identity as a playback singer and not try to follow the K. L. Saigal type of singing. G. M. Durrani was a legendary Bollywood playback singer. His singing style was to inspire Rafi and others in the years to come. Later G. M. Durrani became a model to many playback singers who followed then. The soulful renditions of Durrani were to be reminded of by Talat’s singing as well.

Mohammed Rafi was influenced most notably, by G. M. Durrani on whose style he based his singing. He sang with his idol in some of the songs such as “Humko Hanste Dekh Zamana Jalta Hai” (Hum Sab Chor Hain, 1956) and “Khabar Kisi Ko Nahiin, Woh Kidhar Dekhte” (Beqasoor, 1950).

G. M. Durrani considered his first famous song was ‘Duniya mein sab jode jode’ of the film “Sharda” (1942) composed by Naushad.

The song Neend Hamaari Khwaab Tumhaare Kitne Meethe Kitne Pyaare, that made him a real rage was however composed by Shyam Sundar for his movie Nai Kahani. This song sung most part by G. M. Durrani with some support by child-star Balakram was playing everywhere. When he sang, this song, the listeners went crazy. This timeless melody can never be forgotten by fans of Indian Cinema:-

Nearly 40 years later, when Tata Oil Mills did a program Mortal Men Immortal Melodies to celebrate fifty years of talkies in India, they invited him to re-render the song. Although many had forgotten him, his voice was still great and he got a standing applause for it.

There was a time when G M Durani was the favourite and most preferred singer for most composers in the industry. From 1941 to 1951, he sang over 300 songs. He is a case of “Riches to Rags”. Once a rich and famous singer,he spent his last few years fighting with Throat Cancer, poverty and loneliness. His end was quite pathetic.

G M Durani was a leading singer, like Surendra. The difference was Surendra sang only in his own films and thus had limitations, but Durani was a playback singer, without much competition. In the 40s, there were hardly any male Playback singers, because most singers were actors themselves and sang their own songs, like Asit Baran. Karan Dewan, Ashok kumar, Prem Adeeb, Arun Ahuja, Balwant singh, C H Atma, Ishwarlal, kantilal, K L Saigal, Pahadi Sanyal etc etc. There were of course few Playback singers like Khan Mastana, S D Batish, A R Oza, Balbir etc,but they were no competition to Durani at all.

Because of this, some singers were jealous of him and there was an attempt to poison him with Mercury Chloride ( sindur) given in a Paan by another well known singer. All relevant stories point out fingers to Hafeez Khan Mastana in this incident as the culprit. Before he could confess, which he wanted to, it seems, Mastana died in absolute poverty and in total neglect near Mahim Dargah. Later on his only son used to be seen begging there for quite some time. One of the RMIM members had met him there.

After singing assignments dried up, he opened a provision stores in Mahim, Bombay and ran it for 3 years. Finally, when the losses mounted, he sold off the business in loss.

In his last days, Durani had Throat cancer. He was looked after well by his sons and daughters. In his last days,he was interviewed by the famous writer shri Rajnikumar Pandya ji. After I came to know shri Pandya ji,he kindly gifted me a CD containing the last interview ( just one day prior to his death) of Durani. So I have not only Durani’s real voice, but also a song he sang from his deathbed for this interview ! Thanks to shri Pandya ji. G M Durani, in that last interview claimed that he had helped both financially and professionally two rising singers-Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, in their initial struggling period. He describes his first meetings with them in the interview.

G M Durani sang many memorable songs like, ‘Haath seene pe jo rakh do to karar aa jaaye’, with Noorjehan in Mirza Sahiban-47, ‘Lara Lappa’ with Lata in Ek thi Ladki-49, ‘Nazar na phero humse’ with shamshad Begum in Deedar-51, ‘Gaaye chala jaa’, with Lata in Hum Log-51, ‘Humko hanste dekh zamana jalta hai’ with Rafi in Humsab chor hain-56. Durani sang about 300 songs. His last song came in ‘Lal Pathar’-71.

G M Durrani acted in 16 films, from 1949 to 1978. He sang 305 songs in 168 films. He gave music as MD in 8 films and also wrote lyrics in film Nazare-1949. ( This is primarily based on the details from Shri Rajnikumar Pandya ji’s book ” Aap ki Parchhaiyan “. My thanks to him. Also thanks to Listeners’ Bulletin No.70 of Sept.1987, together with my own notes.)

Let us now enjoy a melodious song by Durrani from this film……

Today’s song is from the ‘1947’ movie ‘Romeo And Juliet’,

It was directed by Akhtar Hussaain for ‘Nargis Art Concern, Bombay’ (home production of actress Nargis).

It had Nargis, Sapru, Anwar Hussain, Sunalini Devi, Nisar, John Cavas, Hameed Murad, Nazir Kashmiri, Violet, Pushpa, Abdul Rasheed, Amanullah and others.

This movie has eight songs in it and it had made its debut on the blog on 12.08.2014 with a song sung by Khayyam Saab and Zohrabai Ambalewali.
The second song from this movie followed immediately in next month and it was posted on 21.09.2014 which was sung by G.M. Durrani.
Thereafter it was a gap of almost three years after which the third song from this movie was posted on 26.07.2017. This song was a solo song sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

The fourth song from this movie again took more than three years to appear on the blog, and it was posted on 28.12.2020. This song again was a solo sung by Zohrabai Ambalewali.

The fifth song of this movie was discussed on 08.06.2022. So it was again after a gap of almost one and half year that the fifth song of this movie was posted after its fourth song.

Out of the eight songs of this movie, lyricist for three songs is Manohar Khanna. One song each is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, Akhtar Shirani, Jigar Moradabadi and Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Lyricist’s name for one song is not mentioned in HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950). However one of the audio links of this song mentions the lyricist name as Majrooh Sultanpuri for this song. We are going to listen to this song today.

*(In my earlier write-up with the songs of this movie I had mentioned two songs for Majrooh Sultanpuri considering the above link. But today I am correcting myself and leaving it to the knowledgeable readers to throw light on this song and its songs.).

Here is the list of songs of this movie.

S.No. Song Title Lyricist Singer Posted On

08 Donon jahaan teri muhabbat mein haar ke Faiz Ahmed Faiz Khayyam, Zohrabai Ambalewali 12.08.2014

As mentioned above and can be seen from the above table five songs from this movie have been posted on the blog earlier.

Today’s song is the sixth song from this movie. It is sung by G.M. Durrani.

Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

The lyricist name for this song is yet to be confirmed.

Let us now listen to today’s song.

Today’s song is from an absolutely obscure film called Vijay Laxmi-1943. The film’s song are not available on social media like YT etc, but I had 4 songs of this film and I found that this film is yet to make a Debut on our Blog.

If 100 films are made in one year, only about 10% of films are Hits or popular. About 10 to 20 % of films do an average business on Box office, but the rest number of films either flop or disappear from the theatres quickly. That means the majority of the films are not worth remembering. Why does this happen when so much money is poured into the films ? No one wants to waste his money on making a film.

Filmmaking is like playing on a Race Course. 100 people buy tickets and put their money on different horses. Only a few win. The rest lose their money, but then everybody can’t win. It is a matter of Luck, because there is no fixed formula for success. When a producer puts his money into making a film, he has all the hopes to earn profit by making the film a Hit. However, not every film can become a Hit. In Spite of this uncertainty in races, films and other such matters, people take chances again and again by changing their strategies.

Let us now take a look at what the Film scenario was in the year 1943….

1943 was a year in which the II world war was in full swing. Both sides were almost equal. The effects of the war on India were… it faced the infamous Bengal Famine, caused by the war profiteering. Controls on film production were tightened by the Government. I.P.T.A. became operative with its first staged p0lay ‘ Nibanna’. Film Kismet became one of the biggests Hits ever. V.Shantaram’s Rajkamal Kalamandir debuted with Shakuntala, as did Mehboob with his film Najma. Government made showing of Newsreel before any film mandatory. Film Raj Nartaki’s english version The Court Dancer was exhibited in the USA, first time for an Indian film.

1943 produced 105 Hindi films, the highest number during the war years, 1939 to 1945. Many landmark and musical films appeared in this year giving a respite to the war torn audience of Indian Cinema. Let us take a look at some of these films.

Film Bhaichara had music by the only other ” Sursagar” musician – Himangshu Dutt ( the more well known being the singer Jagmohan Sursagar).

C.Ramchandra had his first musical hit with the film Bhakta Raj, made by Jayant Desai productions.

Film Gauri from Ranjit became Monica Desai’s first Hindi film in Bombay. It was a very successful film with songs by Khemchand Prakash, based on Bangla Folk tunes.

Kanan Devi gave some sweet songs in the film Hospital, under Kamal Dasgupta’s baton.

Bombay Talkies film Hamari Baat was the last film in which Devika Rani acted. Anil Biswas was the composer.

Music Director Khurshid Anwar brought Gauhar Sultana from Lucknow to sing some songs in the film Ishara. Naushad'[s musical film Kanoon had some good Suraiya and Shyam duets.

Film Kashinath was Nitin Bose’s last film in New Theatres, after he developed differences with B.N.Sircar.

Anil Biswas gave his career best musical Hit film ” Kismet”- the longest running film from Bombay Talkies.

Nurjehan’s musical film Nadaan was popular with songs from composer K.Datta. Director Mehboob made his first film Najma, under his own banner Mehboob productions.

Yet one more musical from Naushad- film Namaste.

At last a musical hit for composer S.N.Tripathi- Panghat from prakash Pictures. Rajkumari Shukla sang her only Hindi song in this film;. (the film was remade as Chitchor-1976).

Film Paraya Dhan had music by Bengal’s famous musician Gyan Prakash Ghosh. Deena Pathak sang her only 2 songs in this film as Deena Sanghavi.

Ghulam Haider makes merry again with Shamshad hit songs in the film Poonji from Pancholi, Lahore.

One more superhit film – Ram Rajya from Prakash Pictures had very good songs from composer Shankar Rao Vyas. Saraswati Rane gave 2 melodious songs. Yashwant joshi and Yashwant Nikam sang the famous song ” Bharat ki ek Sannari ki katha”. Ram Rajya had also a distinction as the only Hindi film that was seen by Mahatma Gandhi, on 2-6-1944.
( before this Gandhi had seen ” Mission to Moscow-43′ an English film, in Wardha, according to The Hindu (Kathmandu Ed.) dt.8-2-2010). The film had early songs by Manna Dey also.

Naushad in full swing with his 3rd Musical Sanjog, where Suraiya gave playback to Mehtab, the Heroine.

Vasant Desai gave excellent songs in the hit film Shakuntala by V.Shantaram.

Hospital- excellent songs by kanan Devi.

Kanoon- another hit from Naushad.

Mera Khwab- MD Ghulam Mohammed’s Debut film

Najma- Mehboob khan’s first film, on Muslim society.

Nurse- Gyan Dutt gave an excellent song of Rajkumari-‘ Vo gaye nahin’

Prithvi Vallabh- A big budget costume drama made by Minerva, based on story of K.M.Munshi. It had songs by Minakshi Shirodkar.

Tansen- Saigal’s first film in Bombay. Khurshid matches him song by song.

Taqdeer- Nargis aka Baby Fatima debuted as an adult. However her name comes third in the credits, after Motilal and Chandramohan.

Besides these films, the following films were also made but their names are not even known to most people. These films just came and went into oblivion !
Andhera, Angoothi, Ashirwad, Bhalai, Chhed Chhad, Daawat, Duniya Deewani, Jangi jawan, Kurbani,Mohabbat, mauj, Pati pooja, prem sangeet, Rekha, Sahara, Salma, Sawaal, Tasweer, Vijay laxmi and Zameen etc etc. These are only sample names. I have not counted C grade and stunt or costume films, which were plenty in numbers.

Today’s film Vijay Laxmi was made by Indian Art Pictures and was directed by one G.S.Kashyap. I find that his name appears as a Director only for this film in the HFGK. Possibly he was a one film director like many in the war period ( who would provide finance also for the film to become a director ). The music was composed by G.M.Durrani, who was basically a singer but had a strong desire to also be a composer. While he sang 305 songs in 168 films, he also composed music in 8 films and acted in 16 films. He even wrote 1 song in film Nazare-1949.

The cast of the film was Shobhana Samarth, Motilal, Yashodhara katju, Gope, David, Meher Bano (actress Purnima, in adult life),Bhudo Advani, Leela Mishra and many others. In this film even Leela Mishra’s husband Ram Prasad Mishra had also done a small role and his name appears in the credits too.

Leela Mishra (1 January 1908 – 17 January 1988) was a Hindi film actress. She worked as a character actor in over 300 Hindi films for five decades, and is best remembered for playing stock characters such as aunts (Chachi or Mausi). She is best known for her role of “mausi” in the blockbuster Sholay (1975), Dil Se Mile Dil (1978), Baton Baton Mein (1979), Rajesh Khanna films such as Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein, Aanchal, Mehbooba, Amar Prem and Rajshri Productions hits such as Geet Gaata Chal (1975), Nadiya Ke Paar (1982) and Abodh (1984). Her career’s best performance was in Naani Maa in 1981, for which she received the Best Actress award at the age of 73.

Leela Mishra was married to Ram Prasad Mishra, who was a character artist, then working in silent films. She got married at the very young age of 12. By the time she was 17, she had two daughters. She hailed from Jais, Raebareli, and she and her husband were from zamindar (landowners) families.

Leela Mishra was discovered by a man called Mama Shinde, who was working for Dadasaheb Phalke’s Nasik Cinetone. He persuaded her husband to make her work in films. During those days there was a severe scarcity of women actors in films; this was evident in the paychecks that the Mishras received when they went to Nasik for the shooting. While Ram Prasad Mishra was hired on a salary of Rs. 150 per month, Leela Mishra was offered Rs. 500 per month. However, as they fared poorly in front of the camera, their contracts were cancelled.

The next opportunity that came their way was an offer to work in the movie Bhikarin, which was being produced by a company owned by the Maharaja of Kolhapur. However, Leela Mishra lost out on this opportunity too, as the role required her to put her arms round the actor (who was not her husband) while delivering a dialogue, which she point-blank refused to do.

Their next film was Gangavataran-37, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke. This was his only and the last Talkie film. In this film Leela did the role of Parvati. This became her first film.

She faced a similar problem while working in another film titled Honhaar. She was cast opposite Shahu Modak as a heroine, and was supposed to hug and embrace him, which she again refused steadfastly. Since the company was legally in a weak position, they couldn’t turn her out of the film, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for her. She was offered Modak’s mother’s role in the film and it clicked instantly. This opened the doors for her to play mother roles at the young age of 18.

Early on in her career she acted in notable films such as the musical hit Anmol Ghadi (1946), Raj Kapoor’s Awaara (1951) and Nargis-Balraj Sahni starrer Lajwanti (1958), which was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Best Film at 1959 Cannes Film Festival.

She acted in the first Bhojpuri film, Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1962), which also starred Kumkum, Helen and Nasir Hussain.

Her roles varied from mothers, benign or evil aunts, to comic roles.

She acted in 344 films. Her last released film was Aatank-96. 8 films were released after her death. ( Thanks to wiki, Ateet ke sitare, muVyz, HFGK and my notes).

I have no idea about the film’s story or other details. The song was given to me by friend Abhay Jain (USA) and was uploaded by our Sadanand Kamath ji. Thanks to both.

Blog Day :

4315 Post No. : 15597

Today’s song is from Dolti Naiya-1950. This film was made by Shaan E Hind Pictures, Bombay. It had music by Pt.Ram Prasad Sharma. The film’s 10 songs were written by a record number of 8 Lyricists and were sung also by 8 singers. In those days, it must have been a record, I guess. The cast of the film was Amarnath, Nigar Sultana, Shyama Dulari, Veena Kohli, Cuckoo, Bhudo Advani, Mukri, Mirza Musharraf, Munshi Munakka and others.

When I was in school, every year a “Self Governance Day” used to be celebrated in our school. I do not know whether this was a practice elsewhere. On this day selected senior students of class 12th standard used to run the school. Head Master, Supervisor, Sports teacher, Teachers and even Peons’ roles were done by the students themselves. When I reached 12th standard, I was very eager to become a Teacher on this day. I was made a teacher of English language of 7th standard and was given a lesson to be taken on that day. All students looked forward to run the school and become teachers on this day.

I think, this feeling of ruling or being in authority is in every field as a dormant wish. A Clerk looks forward becoming a Manager and a Manager wants to become General Manager. An MLA wants to become an MP and MP wants to become a Minister. Film industry is not too different. Every actress wants to become a Heroine, and actors dream of becoming Director some day. There are several examples when all this has actually happened.

Many successful and famous actors have tried their hand at being a Director of a film ( conversely, many directors also were eager to act in a film. Even such examples are there). Few examples of some actors directing films are Dev Anand-19 films ( he takes the cake), Shammi Kapoor-2 films, Balraj Sahni-1 film, Rajesh Khanna-1 film. Even Comedians like Asrani-5 films and Deven verma-4 films are into this. The case of comedian Radha kishen, who produced a film and when it flopped due to delay and loans mounted, committed suicide.

Some examples of old time actors are Prem Adib-1 film, M.Kumar-2 films, Shahu Modak-1 film. Among actresses, from Fatma Begum-8 films to Hema Malini-4 films, examples are less. Surprisingly, leading actors like Amitabh Bachhan, Dilip kumar, Sanjeev kumar etc never went this way. I wish Dilip kumar had become a Director openly rather than making his directors’ lives miserable by interfering in their work, as a nasty habit.

Mirza Musharraf was a comedian of old times. Though he was successful as an actor, he too wanted to become a Director. Today’s film Dolti naiya-50 is his attempt at directing a movie.

In my quest for information on old time actors and other artistes, I came across many good and some not so good experiences. When I first interviewed Ramesh ji, Bhudo Advani’s son, he told me that their family friend Mirza Musharraf’s daughter also stayed nearby. I took her address and reached her house. Her husband did not allow me to meet her, as they were Muslims, and perhaps because it was my first visit to them. When I explained what I wanted, he expected some money. I told him that this is my hobby and I do not do this for money, he was very skeptic. However, after my persistent visits to him,he relented. Her husband, Mr. Muneer Khan,( now deceased) ex production manager of Firoze Khan, gave me some information.

The name of MIRZA MUSHARRAF AGHA may not ring any bells in the newer generation, as he was a comedian in the 30s and 40s-till the late 60s.
During the 30s and 40s there were quite a few real comedians, who regaled the audiences with their humour. Comedians like V.H.Desai, Ghory and Dikshit (the jodi like Laurel and Hardy),Mirza Musharraf, Bhudo Advani, Noor Mohd.Charlie, Yakub (he had travelled to 15 countries including UK and USA,before joining films) and Gope, Fatty Prasad and Durga Mota were much in demand for comic roles in the films. With the times, one by one,all went behind the curtains, giving way to newer set of comedians like Bhagwan, Sunder, Radhkishen, Mukri, I.S.Johar, Majnu, etc. Nowadays, of course, Comedians have disappeared from films, because almost everyone in a film does Comedy, these days.

Artistes fading away is a natural phenomena, but out of the above comedians, the end of Durga Mota was very pathetic and touching.
Durga Mota or Durga Prasad was very fat and this fatness which fetched him name and fame in the industry also became the cause of his death. In 1947,there were riots everywhere. Durga was in Lahore. He wanted to come back to India like other thousands. He came to Lahore station and boarded the train. Just then a frenzied mob came to the station and started killing the passengers. People ran helter skelter and saved themselves, but due to his fatness Durga Mota could not run and he was slaughtered on the station of Lahore itself.

Mirza Musharraf was born in a sophisticated educated family, on 12-6-1912, at Shujanabad-Punjab. His father was an inspector of Police and claimed to be a scion of the Royal Mughal family. He matriculated from Lahore in 1930. He was keen on becoming a Journalist, so he worked in Daily Zamindar, Tariyaq and Shahid. He was a Nationalist, joined Congress and became Secretary of Lahore Congress committee. He was imprisoned but father got him released. He decided to change profession to films.

He got a small role of a party guest in film ” Qazak ki beti-37′, which was being made by one of his acquaintances in Lahore. His second film was Prem Yatra-37. These were uncredited and insignificant roles, but they gave his clever mind a good idea of film line and acting.

A R Kardar who was into films was known to him in Lahore. Kardar took Mirza to Calcutta. There he acted in film Milap-37. The Hero was Gul Hamid, who died in between and was replaced by Prithviraj Kapoor. Mirza also acted in film Mandir-37. When Kardar shifted to Bombay, he too shifted.

He was very fond of writing Lyrics. He came to Bombay to write film songs and was employed by General films. Those days educated persons were eagerly employed by film studios. He first wrote Lyrics for A.R.Kardar’s film “Baghbaan”-1938. This was the film in which K N Singh did his first role as a villain. In this period, Mirza got married also.

During shootings Kardar required an artist and Mirza was called to fill up the slot, as per the studio norms. Mirza had no dialogues, but he exhibited excellent use of facial expressions and comic timing. This actually killed his dream of becoming a lyrics writer, because after that he was made a comedian and got several films. As a comedian,Mirza worked from 1938 to 1972,working in over 400 films. His last film was Roop tera Mastana-1972, where he was credited. Later he made appearance in films like Pathar se takkar-80 and Anjaam khuda jaane-89 uncredited.

When he was on the peak of his career,a happy producer gave his Bungalow at Versova free to him for living.Though Versova was then quite far off and sparsely populated, Mirza lived there like a king. The marriages of both of his daughters took place there.

Mr.Sanjeet Narwekar-the famous Film historian/journalist writes in his book, The story of Hindi Film comedy, about Mirza”. His specialty was interspersing his Hindi dialogues with English words-quite a curiosity in the pre-independence days. He was almost a permanent with V.M.Vyas and played cameo roles in a fairly long career.” According to Saadat Hasan Manto in his book, stars of another sky, -whichever film he acted, he used to be the darling of the Heroes. He was particularly liked by Kardar, K.Asif and Rafiq Ghaznavi. In many films Mirza lip synched songs, but only in ONE film,he got to sing himself. That was the film Gharib ka laal-1939, in a duet. He also sung few lines in film Piya Milan-45 and CAPTAIN KISHORE-1957. He sang along with Mohd.Rafi and Tun Tun.

In one of the interviews Mirza gave to magazine Shama, in August 1981, he described some of his experiences in the film world. This interview is a part of the book ” Ye un dinon ki baat hai” written by my friend Yasir Abbasi. Here are few of his stories. In Bombay, he got to know Nazir-actor, director, producer and owner of Hind Pictures studios, and his nephew K.Asif (Mughal-E-Azam fame). Asif did no work, so Nazir opened a Tailor’s shop for him, but still he did nothing. His interests were different.

Mirza also came closer to director S M Yousuf. Mirza was present in his marriage to actress Nigar Sultana. Mirza describes how K.Asif eloped with Nazir’s wife (and his Mami- aunt) Sitara Devi. Asif later married Yousuf’s wife Nigar Sultana also. Still later Asif married Dilip kumar’s sister too. Asif was notorious in such matters.

Mirza knew Mohd. Rafi since Lahore days. When Rafi came to Bombay, Mirza introduced Rafi to many film people. Mirza claims that Rafi’s first Hindi recorded song was from film Kul Kalank-45, ” Topiwale Babu’ – a duet with Amirbai Karnataki. This song was shot on Mirza and Amirbai on screen. Rafi, it seems, got Rs. 75 for this song. Mirza acted in film Grihasthi-48, which became a Hit film, running for 105 weeks in Bombay. In a public poll, Mirza got a second prize for acting in this film (first was Yaqub) and he got a Gold medal of 3 Tolas. In his difficult days, Mirza sold it, says he.
There are many more anecdotes he describes, but may be some other time.

Mirza Musharraf died in 1991.

Film Industry is one industry which grew very fast. Firstly, there was no competition (except from AIR for entertainment) and secondly, joining this industry needed no special qualifications. Moreover, from the beginning, the ROI (Returns On the Investment) ratio was quite high, once you took care of few parameters like, good actors, good songs and a mix of Romance and Comedy !

Thousands of aspirants, the Good looking, the Bad looking and the Ugly looking rushed to Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta to try their luck. Tawaifs and stage artists had an easy entry, so was for the Handsome and Muscular bodied males.

The studio system took care of grooming its employees. Most people were hired without any specific job description. When needed, the script writer or the Lyricist had to act in the film, and Choreographer-Dance Master in those days-had to take up Direction- if needed. Artists graduated from menial jobs to important positions. That is how Choreographer Guru Dutt became a Director and a Hero, Lyricist and writer J.S.Casshyap became actor/singer, or Amiya Chakrawarty became famous Director from being the Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies, Ashok kumar became Hero from being a Technician in Camera Department and an Extra working as one of the 40 thieves in ” Alibaba and 40 Thieves”-1929, became the Movie Mughal, Director Mehboob Khan.

Those times were different.Industry needed people in all departments. Heads of Studios were like expert jewellers. They knew how to nurture talents. Successful strugglers had empathy towards existing strugglers and gave them opportunity to showcase their skills. Studios got right persons for right jobs. Real Talents survived, rest disappeared.

There were many One timers, who acted in only 1-2 films, directed just 1 film, produced 1 movie, sung only few songs or gave music to only 1 or 2 films. Luck also played an important role. Artists seeking opportunities in Music Departments like singing and composing were many. Most got chances, few prospered.

But it is important to note that every One timer was contributing towards Industry’s growth. Like every drop makes an ocean, these one timers or short distance runners also gave their might to the industry. Those who disappeared after a short performance remained alive through their contribution on record. Hundreds of aspirants came to become Music Directors, only few made the grade, survived and the rest simply vanished. These short time passengers or composers had their time of glory too. Their songs were cherished but their names were forgotten.

Before I proceed further, can you tell me what is the common link in the following names ?

Pyarelal-Ganesh-Naresh-Mahesh-Anand-Gorakh

They are all brothers and sons of Pandit RAMPRASAD SHARMA. He is the Music Director of today’s film Dolti Naiya-1950.
.
Pt.Ramprasad Sharma, born in 1900, belonged to Gorakhpur in United provinces(today’s U.P.). Seeing his love for music, he was brought to Bharatpur State by the king’s bandmaster. He played Trumpet here, then played in Agra Military Band and ended up joining a Circus as a Band Master himself. He toured Delhi, Lahore and Calcutta ,where he settled for some time.He married a local Post Master’s daughter and also worked for Columbia and New Theatres. By now he was an expert in 10 instruments and knew all Ragas.

He came to Bombay in 1938 and played in many studios. His first film as MD was Nayi Baat-1947, then Taqdeerwale-48, Shakti-48, Bedard-49, Banu- 49, Anyay-49, Dolti Naiyya-50 and finally Magic Carpet-64.

His knowledge of Music was so deep that many Composers like,Kalyan ji, Roshan, Uttamsingh, Hridaynath Mangeshkar etc came to him to learn notations in which he was a master. Probably, having played as a Band Master helped him. Those days, very few musicians knew how to write music in Notations. This art was carried further by his another son Ganesh.

Despite his knowledge of music, he failed as a composer himself and worked/played for other Music Directors like Naushad, K.Dutta, C. Ramchandra etc. His trumpet playing in the famous song of Rafi ” Suhani raat dhal chuki” (film Dulari-1949) is unforgettable.

Pt.Ramprasad will be remembered by many composers as their teacher. His music was melodious, his Luck was not too kind on him, though.

His two sons Pyarelal and Ganesh became famous composers.

Pt.Ramprasad died on 22-8-1995 at Mumbai.

Today’s song is a very melodious one – as such, I like Durrani as a singer. He has sung one of the best songs of Hindi films, in my opinion (Neend hamari, khwaab tumhare-Nai kahani-1943). Pt. Ramprasad’s tune and music is just superb. To give such a music in 1950 was in itself an achievement. When I hear today’s song, I feel a similarity to Talat’s song ‘ Meri yaad mein na aansoo bahana” from film Madhosh-51. I may be wrong also. Alas, Film industry does not go by quality, it goes by measurable success in terms of popularity of songs. Whom to blame, music lovers or the industry ?
Enjoy the song.

Lyrics

meri zindagi bhi koi zindagi hai
na dil mein umangen na lab par hansi hai
meri zindagi bhi

kiya hai muqaddar ne barbaad aisa
kiya hai muqaddar ne barbaad aisa
jidhar dekhta hoon nahin koi apna
jidhar dekhta hoon nahin koi apna
nahin koi apna
nazar ik zamaane se badle huye hain
meri zindagi bhi

mere dil ko hardam dukhaati hai duniya
mere dil ko hardam dukhaati hai duniya
tadapta hoon main muskuraati hai duniya
tadapta hoon mai muskuraati hai duniya
muskurati hai duniya
mujhe kis khata par saza mil rahi hai
meri zindagi bhi

meri zindagi bhi koi zindagi hai
na dil mein umangen na lab par hansi hai
meri zindagi bhi
