Sahir Ludhianvi & His Music Directors-8 – (more than ‘ten-movies collaboration’)
—————————————————————————————————–
In this series ‘Sahir Ludhianvi & His Music Directors’ today we have discussed Sahir Ludjainvi’s collaboration with Music directors upto ‘seven movies’. After seven-movies collaborations we move to double figures. Today’s music director with Sahir is N. Datta.
If we look at the total number of songs written by Sahir i.e.,717 as per HFGK and the total number of songs up to ‘seven-movie collaboration’ which is 347 songs from movies, which gives us 48% songs from these collaborations. (Out of these 347 songs 328 songs have already been posted on the blog.)
After this we have only three music directors left to be discussed. I am sure everybody is aware of these three ‘great’ collaborations though the very old and first one ended abruptly after ‘Pyaasa-1957’ i.e., Sahir-S.D. Burman collaboration.
Today we look into one of these ‘three’ great collaborations of Sahir and that is with music director N. Datta.
This fabulous collaboration created many memorable songs gems and gave us many unforgettable gems in Hindi Film Music history.
Sahir Ludhianvi and N. Datta collaborated in ‘seventeen’ movies including one song for one ‘un-released’ movie.
Here is the details of their movies together;
S.no | Movie | Year | MD | Songs of lyricist in the blog | Song penned by lyricist in movie as per HFGK | Song penned by lyricist in movie as per the book -The People’s Poet |

Sahir Ludhianvi and N. Datta collaborated in ‘seventeen’ movies (including one un-released movie) and out of 717 songs as per HFGK the number of songs Sahir-N. Datta collaboration had given us 108 songs i.e., 15% of total number of songs.
If we go through the list of movies (as given above), we have two movies yet to be covered with all of their songs. These two movies are ‘Dilli Ka Daada-1962’ and ‘Chehre Pe Chehra-1980’.
For ‘Dilli Ka Daada-1962’ only one Sahir song is pending and I guess this song is yet not available and/or difficult to find. So, we move to the next movie which is ‘Chehre Pe Chehra-1980’.
‘Chehre Pe Chehraa-1980’ was directed by Raj Tilak, for ‘Tilak Movies, Bombay’.
Raj Tilak was also the producer of this movie.
It had Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Vinod Mehra, Sulakshana Pandit, Amol Palekar, Rajani Sharma, Shree Ram Lagoo, Iftekhar, Shammi, Suresh Chatwal, Kumar Aditya, Prem Sagar and others.
Shatrughan Sinha and Amjad Khan make special appearances in this movie.
Screenplay of this movie was written by Raj Marbrose and dialogues were written by Kadar Khan. Editing of this movie was done by Madhu Sinhaa.
This movie is said to be based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel ‘Dr. Jeykll & Mr. Hyde’ and it was passed by Censor Board on 21.05.1980 with restricted viewing certificate (i.e., ‘A’).
This movie had six songs written by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed to music by N. Datta. Background music for this movie was given by Salil Chaudhary.
Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Sulakshana Pandit had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
As per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) following is the list of songs of this movie;
S.No. | Song Title | Singer/s | Posted On |

05) | Tumse kehnaa hai ki dushwaar | Sulakshana Pandit | |
06) | Aa kuchh karen is haseen raat mein | Dilraj Kaur, chorus |
Let us now enjoy today’s song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is lip-synced on screen by Rekha. This is a club-dance number where we can see many other artists and Sanjeev Kumar makes his entry towards the end of the performance …
Let us have a look at the following table where after including the ‘Sahir-N. Dutta’ collaboration (today’s song not included) we get the following statistics so far;

Hullo Atuldom
“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vasisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances. It was the story of Chandni Mathur a young effervescent young lady unsure of her emotions for two gentle men.
This was Yash Chopra’s return to his formula of love stories with good music, locales, and heavy dose of emotions and sentiments. It was very successful and also confirmed Sridevi’s position as a super actress.
It had songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Shiv-Hari. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Jolly Mukherjee, Nitin Mukesh, Vinod Rathod, Anupama Deshpande (the humming in the song ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh jhadi hain’), Asha Bhonsle, Babla etc. were the playback singers There is even a Kishore Kumar song in the movie which had 9 songs and the blog has 7 of these.
The Kishore Kumar song has not yet been posted.
Today’s song is the surprise of the movie. I suppose this was the only song that Sridevi has sung in Hindi films. Of course, there is a song in Balu Mahendra directed “Sadma” where Sridevi’s voice was heard along with Kamal Haasan’s in the story-song ‘ek dafa ek jungle tha’ where she giggles and gives reaction to whatever Kamal was saying.
The song with this post is something which I have always wondered about. Whether it is a fantasy or flashback. I have seen this movie a number of times and I have not been able to decide. It has been shot in the picturesque Switzerland. It is one of the songs where the heroine is seen dressed environment appropriately. It also is a lesson for the lover to never meet his love without gifts.
We remember our beloved “khwaabon ki Shehzaadi” Sridevi who left us on 24th February 2018 today. She left her family, friends and countless fans shocked when the news broke over news channels in the wee hours of 25th. The general reaction was “it cannot be true”. How can a person who was so full of vitality and healthy and eagerly expecting her daughter’s first bow on the Bollywood firmament “just go!!!!” She herself just had had a release “Mom” and was seen at various award functions and TV channels. A lasting memory for me, personally, was from the TV dance reality show where she was seen shaking a leg with her contemporary Madhuri Dixit and it was a soothing sight for sore eyes. There have been posts on our blog which have her life-story, list of co-stars etc.
Thank you Sridevi for having entertained us through your life-time having started as a child-actor.

chaandni o meri chaandni
chaandni main teri chaandni

Today’s song is from a film which hardly anyone knows. The name was unknown, the director was unknown and the 3 Music Directors who composed 8 songs by two lyricists, did not become famous. The film is Bedard-1949. It was directed by B.N.Chouhan, who is credited with two more films for direction, namely Ret mahal-49 and Jungle ki Duniya-59.
There were 3 Music Directorss – Ramprasad Sharma, B.N.Bali and Mohd. Shafi. In the HFGK, out of 8 songs of the film only 2 are credited to Ramprasad. Other songs are uncredited. Luckily, today’s song is credited to Ramprasad Sharma.
Film Industry is one industry which grew very fast. Firstly, there was no competition (except from AIR for entertainment) and secondly, joining this industry needed no special qualifications. Moreover, from the beginning, the ROI (Returns On the Investment) ratio was quite high, once you took care of few parameters like, good actors, good songs and a mix of Romance and Comedy !
Thousands of aspirants, the Good looking, the Bad looking and the Ugly looking rushed to Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta to try their luck. Tawaifs and stage artists had an easy entry, so was for the Handsome and Muscular bodied males.
The studio system took care of grooming its employees. Most people were hired without any specific job description. When needed, the script writer or the Lyricist had to act in the film, and Choreographer-Dance Master in those days-had to take up Direction- if needed. Artists graduated from menial jobs to important positions. That is how Choreographer Guru Dutt became a Director and a Hero, Lyricist and writer J.S.Casshyap became actor/singer, or Amiya Chakrawarty became famous Director from being the Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies, Ashok kumar became Hero from being a Technician in Camera Department and an Extra working as one of the 40 thieves in ” Alibaba and 40 Thieves”-1929, became the Movie Mughal, Director Mehboob Khan.
Those times were different. Industry needed people in all departments. Heads of Studios were like expert jewellers. They knew how to nurture talents. Successful strugglers had empathy towards existing strugglers and gave them an opportunity to showcase their skills. Studios got the right people for the right jobs. Real Talents survived, rest disappeared.
There were many One timers, who acted in only 1-2 films, directed just 1 film, produced 1 movie, sung only a few songs or gave music to only 1 or 2 films. Luck also played an important role. Artistes seeking opportunities in Music Departments like singing and composing were many. Most got chances, few prospered.
But it is important to note that every ‘One timer’ was contributing towards Industry’s growth. Like every drop makes an ocean, these one timers or short distance runners also gave their might to the industry. Those who disappeared after a short performance remained alive through their contribution on record. Hundreds of aspirants came to become Music Directors, only few made the grade, survived and the rest simply vanished. These short time passengers or composers had their time of glory too. Their songs were cherished but their names were forgotten.
Before I proceed further, can you tell me what is the common link in the following names ?
Pyarelal-Ganesh-Naresh-Mahesh-Anand-Gorakh.
They are all brothers and sons of Pandit RAMPRASAD SHARMA. He was a Music Director.
.
Pt. Ramprasad Sharma, born in 1900, belonged to Gorakhpur in the United provinces (today’s U.P.). Seeing his love for music, he was brought to Bharatpur State by the king’s bandmaster. He played Trumpet here, then played in Agra Military Band and ended up joining a Circus as a Band Master himself. He toured Delhi, Lahore and Calcutta ,where he settled for some time. He married a local Post Master’s daughter and also worked for Columbia and New Theatres. By now he was an expert in 10 instruments and knew all Ragas.
He came to Bombay in 1938 and played in many studios. His first film as MD was Nayi Baat-1947, then Taqdeerwale-48, Shakti-48, Bedard-49, Banu- 49, Anyay-49, Dolti Naiyya-50 and finally Magic Carpet-64.
His knowledge of Music was so deep that many Composers like Kalyan ji, Roshan, Uttamsingh, Hridaynath Mangeshkar etc came to him to learn notations in which he was a Master. Probably, having played as a Band Master helped him. Those days, very few musicians knew how to write music in Notations. This art was carried further by his another son Ganesh.
Despite his knowledge of music, he failed as a composer himself and worked/played for other Music Directors like Naushad, K. Dutta, C. Ramchandra etc. His trumpet playing in the famous song of Rafi ” Suhani raat dhal chuki” (film Dulari-1949) is unforgettable.
Pt. Ramprasad will be remembered by many composers as their teacher. Though his music was melodious and good, his Luck was not so good.
His 2 sons Pyarelal and Ganesh became famous composers.
Pt.Ramprasad died on 22-8-1995 at Mumbai.
The cast of the film was Majnu, Sudha Rao, Shanta kunwar, Ameenabai, Abu Bakar etc.etc. Majnu (real name Harold Lewis) came to Bombay after Partition. Bedard-49 was among the few films in which he was the Hero. A Punjabi Christian, he was born on 2-11-1913. He was the childhood friend of Roop K.Shorey. When Shorey wanted to make his second film, he chose Harold as a Hero. Majnu was introduced as a leading man opposite Shyama Zutshi by producer/director Roop K. Shorey in film Majnu (1935) — a musical comedy satirizing the old story of Laila Majnu, produced, directed and shot in Lahore with Ghulam Haider as music director. With daring motorbike stunts and special effects, audiences were thrilled at the sight of Majnu trapped on the railway tracks by the villain.
The film was a success and R. K. Shorey repeated Majnu as the leading man in his next film, Tarzan ki Beti (1938). Tarzan Ki Beti was hailed as the best jungle picture ever produced in India at the time. Filmed in the snowy Himalayas, the film topped its predecessor in its action sequences and placed Punjab on the entertainment map of India and the world.
He appeared in almost all of Shorey’s films. He was also doing films with other producers. In 1942 he did a double role in Nishani and in 1943 he directed his first film Paapi. Shorey also gave him a film Badnami-1946 for direction and it was here that Majnu met I.S.Johar who wrote the story and Dialogues of Badnami.
Majnu paired with I.S.Johar in EK THI LADKI-1949,the debut film of Johar, as an actor. Later they made a comedy pair in 10 films, including the hit HUM SAB CHOR HAIN-1956. His last film with Johar was Akalmand-66.
Majnu acted in 77 films. His first film was Majnu-35 and his much delayed and released last film was Shri Krishna Bhakti-73.
Majnu directed 8 films including,Paapi-43, Badnami-46, Son of Alibaba-55, Tatar ka chor-55, Malika-56, Basre ki Hoor-56, Baghi sardar-56, and his last film – Chandu-58.
Harold Lewis aka Majnu died on 26-3-1974.

Hullo Atuldom
12th February was the birthday of an Atulite. He has started a series to introduce missing movies of the ’70s, and just as well as movies of 70s will complete 50 years. It is unbelievable that movies that were part of our childhood are 50 years old.
‘Guddi’, ‘Andaz’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’, ‘Caravan’, ‘Anand’, ‘Anubhav’, ‘Parwana’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’, etc all 1971 releases, all which I have seen multiple times. I am sure that these movies would be favourites of a majority of the followers of this blog.
There is one more movie that will complete 50 years this year. Its release date has been recorded on various internet sites as 1st July 1971, but the censor certificate has a date of 24th February 1970 i.e. exactly a year after its leading lady bade goodbye to this mortal world.
Madhubala- the beauty who charmed an entire generation of moviegoers. A beauty who had an infectious smile and near-musical laughter: – can anyone forget the laughter that precedes ‘haal kaisa hai janaab ka’ or the mischievous smile through ‘accha jee main haari chalo maan jaao na’ and ‘jaanu jaanu re chhupke kaun aaya tore angna’. Her eyes were so expressive. But write-ups about her say that she kept a low public profile and was not seen at film parties and premieres.
She was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi in Delhi on 14th February (which the world celebrates as valentine day in modern times) as fifth of eleven children to Ataullah Khan and Ayesha Begum. An out of work father first reached Delhi from Peshawar (now in Pakistan) and then to Bombay. A very young Mumtaz was first cast as a child actor in the 1942 release ‘Basant’ which was followed by ‘Mumtaz Mahal’,‘Phulwaari’, ‘Dhana Bhagat’, ‘Rajputaani’. Baby Mumtaz became Madhubala from “Neel Kamal” in 1947. It is said that baby Mumtaz and baby Mahjabeen became friends in the period they were child actors and grew up to be contemporaries – Madhubala and Meena Kumari. Madhubala is said to have been a fan of Meena and her voice.
Madhubala was one of the most popular, successful and highly paid actresses of the ‘50s and ’60s. She acted in 73 movies in a career spanning almost two decades though the ‘60s saw only five films of hers. She also produced three movie: – ‘Naata’ (1955), ‘Mehlonkekhwab’ (1960) and ‘Pathan’ (1962). She sang a song or two as baby Mumtaz in ‘Basant’. She was an enigma who was rarely seen at filmy functions or premieres, this was because she was an obedient daughter and submitted to the domination of her father. According to what Dilip Kumar has once said:- she was the only female star for whom crowds would gather at the gates of the studios where she was shooting. Many believe she was one of the most underrated actresses as her beauty attracted more attention than her talent. She was good at expressing a range of emotions through her eyes- comedy, pathos etc etc. In spite of being an iconic actress she never won any awards and was only nominated for her role in “Mughal-e-azam” but she reigned on the hearts of her fans.
She was unlucky in life and had a few heartbreaks before leaving this world and Kishore Kumar, whom she married in 1960, yearning for her. She died on 23rd February 1969 of congenital heart disease;an ailment for which there was no treatment when she was diagnosed in 1954 on the sets of a film being made in Madras. By the time heart surgeries were possible she was too weak to withstand and was confined to bed for nearly nine years. In 1966 she attempted to complete her part of work in the Raj Kapoor starrer “Chalaak” but that was also a strain for her fragile body. (Most of this information I have found on Wikipedia about an actress/ star who was on my dad’s list of favorites in those times).
The song with this post is from a movie that was shot sometime in the ‘50sand we have a very young Sunil Dutt romancing the princess “Jwala” (Madhubala). This movie is significant as it is the only movie of Madhubala that was shot in colour, “Mughal-e-azam” was partly in colour at the time of making, but “Jwala” was made as a colour movie. Sudhirji’s post gives us details about the movie which was essentially a ‘princess falling in love with a commoner who turns out to be a prince in exile’ story. Today’s song is written by Rajinder Krishan, tuned by Shankar -Jaikishan and sung by Manna Dey and Lata Mangeshkar.
February was the month of Madhubala’s birth and she would have turned 88. It is also the month she left the world at 36. We, her fans, can only fantasize how she would have looked as an octogenarian.

We have been discussing movies where one song was posted long ago and it took ages before the second song was posted on the blog. The ‘ten-year challenge’ gives us opportunities for posting songs of such movies which have been on the blog and running well 😊, and also movies which took almost twelve years to get all their songs covered on the blog after their debut. (Latest case being the movie ‘Warrant-1975’ which was ‘Yippeeee’ed’ recently. The first song of ‘Warrant-1975’ was posted on the blog in September’2008).
Then there are movies whose songs get posted on ‘regular intervals’ like ‘Olympic’ games or ‘world cup cricket’ 😊
Today we are presenting a song from a movie where the earlier songs appeared on the blog at ‘regular interval’ of ‘four years’. This movie is ‘The Burning Train-1980’.
It debuted on the blog with the famous ‘qawwali’ Pal do pal ka saath hamaaraa which was posted on 08.12.2008.
Then the second this movie was posted on 17.10.2012 – Teri hai zameen tera aasmaan .
Third song got posted on 08.12.2016 which wasWaada, haan jee waada, jab tak amber par taare….
Incidentally the last post of 08.12.2016 was also presented by me. The song talks about ‘waadaa’, but we could not keep our ‘promise’ to post a song after four years i.e.in ‘2020’, even though two songs were lying ready with us. Today’s song , quite appropriately says ‘kisi ke waade pe kyun aitbaar hamne kiya’. 😊. Nevertheless, if not in ‘December-2020’ we are doing it now in ‘February-2021’…

Lyrics
Aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya aa aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya aa aa
Naa aane waalon ka kyun
Naa aane waalon ka kyun
Intezaar hamne kiya aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya
Naa wo hamaare huye ae
Aur na hum rahe apne
Aa aa aa
Naa wo hamaare huye ae
Aur na hum rahe apne
Muhabbaton ka ajab
Muhabbaton ka ajab
Kaarobaar hamne kiya aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya
Wo khel khel rahe thhe
Wo khel khel chuke
Ho o o
Wo khel khel rahe thhe
Wo khel khel chuke
Khataa hamaari thhi kyun
Khataa hamaari thhi kyun
Unse pyaar hamne kiya aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya
Bichhad ke unse naa jab
Dil kisi tarah aa aa badla
Ho o o
Bichhad ke unse naa jab
Dil kisi tarah badla
Sharaab-khaane ka rukhh a
Sharaab-khaane ka rukhh
Ikhtiyaar hamne kiya aa
Naa aane waalon ka kyun
Naa aane waalon ka kyun
Intezaar hamne kiya aa aa
Naa aane waalon ka kyun
Intezaar hamne kiya aa aa
Kisi ke waade pe kyun
Aitbaar hamne kiya
