Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 12
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘च’ – चाँदनी छिटकी हुई है मुस्कुराती रात है ॰ ॰ ॰

तुम तो दिल के तार छेड़ कर ॰ ॰ ॰

The songs that you have rendered, the legacy that you have left behind, it strums the strings of the heart and brings unfettered pleasure to the listening mind. The treasure is limitless, and yet limited. Limitless – that we can hear them over and over again, and the listening pleasure multiplies. And yes, limited too – for we know now, what we have is what it is; there will be additions to this treasure no more.

Continuing with this delightful series of duets of Rafi Sb. We skip the ‘ङ’ letter in the alphbet – no meaningful words start with this letter and so no songs starting with it either.

We now come on to the next letter ‘‘. And to this delightful song from almost seven decades back. The film is from 1950 – a time when the companion singer was still known as Geeta Roy. The film is ‘Hamaara Ghar’. A wonderful chhaayageet song which comes from the pen of Anjum. The lyricists name appears as such; most likely this is the same person as Anjum Jaipuri. The melody comes from the mind of Chitragupt, a creator of many an unforgettable track.

The film is produced under the banner of Hindustan Chitra and is directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The cast of actors is listed as Durga Khote, Umakant, Veera, Agha, Meena Kumari, Geeta Bose, David, Jankidas, Ramesh Gupta, Yashodhara Katju. I cannot with certainty make any guess about the lead pair of the film. I request knowledgeable readers and friends to please add more information about this film and this song.

The film has seven songs, two of which are already showcased here on our blog. Here is the third song from this film. Think 1950, and think melody – the queen. A delightful duet. Enjoy.

Song – Chaandni Chhitki Hui Hai Muskuraati Raat Hai (Hamaara Ghar) (1950) Singer – Geeta Roy, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Anjum, MD – Chitragupt
Mohammed Rafi + Geeta Dutt

Lyrics

chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

tumko kya dekhen sitaaro
tum puraane ho chuke
tumko kya dekhen sitaaro
tum puraane ho chuke
hum to un ko dekhte hain
jo hamaare ho chuke
jo hamaare ho chuke
dil se dil ki baat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

jhoomte hain aaj armaan
hans rahi hai zindagi
jhoomte hain aaj armaan
hans rahi hai zindagi
dil to pehle hi miley the
mil gai taqdeer bhi
mil gai taqdeer bhi
aji haath mein ab haath hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

ik naya jeevan hai paaya
ik nai duniya basi
ik naya jeevan hai paaya
ik nai duniya basi
mil gayi hai do dilon ko
saari duniya ki khushi
saari duniya ki khushi
kya niraali baat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

chaandni chhitki hui hai
muskuraati raat hai
ek chanda aasmaan par
ik hamaare saath hai

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 11
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘घ’ – घर वाले घर नहीं, हमें किसी का डर नहीं ॰ ॰ ॰

दिल॰ ॰ ॰  तू भी गा ॰ ॰ ॰

And not just a heart; every heart sang. Every heart sang your songs, every heart sang along. There is that something so naturally attractive in your renditions, that every heart will brim up, and start to sing along. Ah, the magic of your voice. . .

For the next song in this series, I have picked this delightful duet of free spirit fun from the 1959 film ‘Pyaar Ki Raahen’. The film has such wonderful gems like “Tum Se Door Chale. . .” and “Do Roz Mein Wo Pyaar Ka Aalam Guzar Gaya“, already showcased on our blog. And a few more still waiting in the wings. With this post, this film now has four songs added here. And four more are waiting to come on board.

All eight songs of this film are from the pen of Prem Dhawan. And the music. . . wish we had more music to listen to, from this music director. The compositions are from the mind of Kanu Ghosh. Another of the bevy of talented but very less heard music director, and under-utilized by the producers and directors in the industry. Kanu Ghosh has just two films to his name – ‘Naya Zamaana’ from 1957 and this film. One also sees his name appear against one song in the 1953 film ‘Teen Batti Chaar Raasta’. And that is it. Listening to the above mentioned two songs, and then this song, one just wonders why. . .

The film is produced under the banner of Thakur Brothers, Bombay, and is directed by Lekhraj Bhakri. The cast of actors is quite impressive – Pradeep Kumar, Anita Guha, Pran, Jeevan, Tiwari, Kuldip Kaur, Sundar, Chandabai, Ameer Bano, Rajan Kapoor, Ravikant, Ladle, Helen, Om Prakash. With Helen’s name in the cast, one is sure to find at least one more gem of a dance song. Sure enough, there is this Asha Bhosle rendition of “Gori Gori Gori Gori Baahen, Teekhi Teekhi Haaye Ye Nigaahen” waiting to be posted, hopefully soon.

In today’s song Rafi Sb is accompanied by Geeta Dutt. As mentioned, a fun song of free spirit, celebrating the prospect of the lovers having free time to themselves. Wonder what the situation of this song could have been. I request our knowledgeable friends and readers who may have seen this film, to please add more information about the picturization of this song and the film itself.

Quite much a happy-go-lucky song that I am sure you will enjoy.

“Milan” (1958) was directed by Kedar Kapoor for N C Films, Bombay. The movie had Ait, Nalini Jaywant, Nishi, Daisy Irani, Maruti, Narbada Shanker, Jagdish Kanwal, Helen, Tiwari etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Four songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Milan” (1958) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song. The song is a chhed-chhad song between spouses.

Song-Maine kaha ji ye mausam hai suhaana (Milan)(1958) Singers-Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Both

Lyrics

o maina kaha ji
ye mausam hai suhaana
achcha nahin yoon kisi se roothh jaana
o maine kaha ji
ye mausam hai suhaana
achcha nahin yoon kisi se roothh jaana
ada hai haseenon ki yoonhi tadpaana
maine kaha ji o

seedhha nahin hai roothhon ko manaana
o maine kaha ji

o
bada dard hai sar mein
zara sar ko daba do
beemaar ko apne aanchal ki hawa do
ho ye dard hai dil ka
baaten na banaao
aji taan ke chaadar chup se so jaao
aji mardon ke dil ko ye rog hai puraana
mardon ke dil ko ye rog hai puraana
maine kaha ji

ye mausam hai suhaana
achcha nahin yoon kisi se roothh jaana
o maine kaha ji

o aaya jo gussa

haaye aur bhi aa gayi gaalon pe laali
na chhedo ji hamko chhodo bhi kalaayi
jaag uthhegi ye duniya jab doongi duhaai

seeda nahin hai roothhon ko manaana o miyaan ji

o hai ghar mein ladaai aur baahar sardi
mar jaaunga dar pe tere o bedardi
na na

aisa mat bolo
takraar se meri
na pyaar ko tolo
gussa ye laali hai pyaar ka bahaana
gussa ye laali hai pyaar ka bahaana
maine kaha ji

achcha nahin jee kisi se roothh jaana

maine kaha jee
arre maine kaha jee
o maine kaha jee
maine kah jee jee jee

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

/‘ई’/

‘उ’ – उठो बुलबुलों तोड़ दो तीलियाँ

दिल की आवाज़ भी सुन॰ ॰ ॰

वो अगर चे सुन सकते, हम तो सुनाते ही रहते॰ ॰ ॰

But now, the voice has gone to distant lands unknown, where our call will not reach, and his voice will not come back again. It seems like a thing of yesterday that I saw him perform live on Doordarshan; or that I read about another award in the Filmfare magazine, that he had stood up and walked up to receive. The mind simply does not believe that he has not been with us mortals for the past almost four decades.

Moving forward with the series of duets – I have to skip ‘ई’ because no duet song starting with this vowel is available. So I come to ‘उ’, as the starting letter for today’s song.

As I was searching for such a song, I came across this song from ‘Khaamosh Sipaahi’ of 1950, and I listened to it in complete amazement. And I listened to it again and again, and again. The composition by Hansraj Behl – it is so unique and so different, that I wonder whether such an arrangement has been attempted in any other songs.

The leading voices in this ‘duet’ song are of Rafi Sb and Geeta Roy/Dutt. But the entire song is arranged as a chorus song. The individual voices of the lead singers are not heard separately even once. There are lines by the chorus of male voices, and there lines by the chorus of female voices, and then there are lines by chorus of male plus female voices. The beauty and the redeeming feature of this singing is how the various voices have been arranged. When the male chorus is heard, then Rafi Sb’s voice is very clearly discernible a little above the chorus of male voices. When the female chorus is heard, then Geeta Roy’s voice is clearly discernible a little above the chorus on female voices.

I am not able to immediately recall another song which has been arranged with such meticulous attention to the sound of the lead voices in a chorus of voices. Really beautifully done.

And the words by DN Madhok Sb, they simply take one along with the emotions of an army preparing for battle. Yes, that is right, this song has been designed as a slow paced marching song of the warriors.

I have no information about this film – ‘Khamosh Sipahi’, and I request our more knowledgeable friends and readers to please add more information about this film and the picturization of this song. But the words indicate that it is a song that is exhorting people for a struggle. Given the time period (1950), it would seem that the song is urging the warriors, either for the freedom struggle or maybe the first invasion of Kashmir by Pakistani marauders (in 1948). Maybe it is the freedom struggle – the refrain of the song is

utho bulbulo
tod do teeliaan

The words are urging the timid and frail nightingale birds, to rise and break the ‘teeliaan’. This word ‘teeliaan’ here refers to the wooden twigs or splinters that are used to make cages for small birds.

The song, slow paced as it is, it still has a very exhilarating effect on the mind and the heart. The slow pace is almost a haunting that takes over the mind. And the mind wants to listen to this sound again and again. Such a wonderful creation – and I would lay all the kudos on Hansraj Behl for the composition, the arrangement  of the minimal music, and such a beautiful play of chorus voices entwined around the lead voices – it is simply amazing. There is some leading violin music, but after that when the singing starts, there simply is no music except for a very low rhythm of drum beats. The entire creation is so enchanting.

Just listen to this, and be amazed.

PS: There is one word in the lyrics of the first antaraa, that I am not sure that I have got it correct. Maybe it is, maybe the meaning fits in, or maybe not. I request other readers to please help confirm or correct this word. 🙂

Song – Utho Bulbulo Tod Do Teeliyaan (Khamosh Sipaahi) (1950) Singer – Geeta Roy/Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – DN Madhok, MD – Hansraj Behl
Mohammed Rafi + Male Chorus
Geeta Roy/Dutt + Female Chorus
Rafi + Geeta + All Chorus

Lyrics

utho bulbulo
tod to teeliaan
kahaan qaid thandi hawaayen kahaan
utho bulbulo
tod to teeliaan
kahaan qaid thandi hawaayen kahaan
utho bulbulo

tumhaare liye abr ghir ghir ke aaye
abr ghir ghir ke aaye
khushi jholion mein wo bhar bhar ke laaye
wo bhar bhar ke laaye
wo bhoola hua phir banega samaan
utho bulbulo
tod to teeliaan
kahaan qaid thandi hawaayen kahaan
utho bulbulo

himaala ne tum ko pukaara hai aao
pukaara hai aao
meri chotiyon par wohi geet gaao
meri chotiyon par wohi geet gaao
ke sun kar dehal jaaye saara jahaan
utho bulbulo
tod to teeliaan
kahaan qaid thandi hawaayen kahaan
utho bulbulo

mujhe khabr hai par kate hain tumhaare
par kate hain tumhaare
utho waqt deta hai tum ko ishaare
ho tum ko ishaare
gaya waqt phir jaa ke aaye kahaan
utho bulbulo
utho bulbulo
utho bulbulo

This song is the 100th duet of Rafi Sb and Geeta Dutt to be posted here on our blog.

As I was browsing the net earlier in the day, checking for articles and source material on Guru Dutt, I came across this she’er (couplet) which was written by the poet Kaifi Azmi in 1964, on hearing the news of Guru Dutt’s demise.

rehne ko sadaa dehar mein aata nahin koi
tum jaise gaye aise bhi jaata nahin koi
maana ki ujaalon ne tumhen daagh diye the
be-raat dhale shama bujhaata nahin koi

It is true, no one comes in this world
To reside for ever
But the way you departed
No one even leaves that way
Granted that the brightness of flame
May have inflicted painful burns
But still, no one douses the lamp
Before the night comes to an end

Remembering Guru Dutt, the vital genius of Hindi cinema, on his anniversary today (9 july 2017). Had he been alive, he would have been 92 today.

Today’s song is from film Chaalbaaz (1958).

What an year 1958 was, in terms of musical films ! Most Music Directors had offered their best songs in this year. The popular playback singers were very busy and the musicians and the arrangers had a field day, running from this studio to that studio for rehearsals and recordings. The films that came in 1958 were full of wonderful music and one can not make choices in those films. Not only that but there was a variety of different Genres of films on offer. Historical, Costume, stunt,Mythologicals, social, Comedy….you name it and you would have it. A grade, B grade and C grade… all grades of films had A grade music. An example to quote would be “Hamen to loot liya mil ke husn walon ne…”a very popular qawwali from a C grade film like “Al Hilal “- 58.
