Recently, I came across an audio clip of a song from ‘Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe’ (1998), a film directed by Lekh Tandon. Online resources shows that the film was completed in 1997 but remained unreleased. The audio album of the songs was released in January 1998. I got confused as there was another film in the same title with Mithun Chakraborty and Moon Moon Sen in lead roles which was released in 1989. Things got somewhat cleared when I came across an interview of Milind Gunaji, one of the main actors of the film, which appeared on rediff.com on January 9, 1998. He said that after the completion of about 70 percent of the shooting, Lekh Tandon left the film. However, after some time, he was persuaded to complete the film which he did in December 1997. Still the film did not get released.

Milind Gunaji also revealed that he was doing a role of a Veerappan type of a character and Meenakshi Seshadri as a TV journalist who gets opportunity to interview him. Her cameraman, Kanwaljeet Singh who is actually an undercover commando, deceitfully arranges his killing and Meenakshi Seshadri cries over his dead body. With this background, I tried to locate the video clip of the song as well as the full movie but could not find anywhere. Finally, I got the video clip of the song under the name of the film, ‘Do Raahen’ (1998). With this name, I searched for the video of the full movie, and I got it. I watched the film and got the information from its credit titles.

‘Do Raahen’ (2000) was certified by the Censor Board as such on 31/08/2000, even though the film was ready by the end of 1997 as per Milind Gunaji’s interview referred to above. The film was produced by Plus Films (which means the connection of Mahesh Bhatt and Amit Khanna) and was directed by Lekh Tandon. The star cast included Meenakshi Seshadri, Kanwaljeet Singh, Milind Gunaji, Deepak Qazir. Saleem Shah, Shiva Rindani, Masood Akhtar, Rana Jung Bahadur, Prabha Mishra, Madhumalati etc. I am not sure whether the film got a theatrical release. But the film was released on DVD by Ultra. The song album was released in January 1998 with the original name of the film, ‘Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe’. Probably, at the time of submission of the film to Censor Board, the film’s title was changed to ‘Do Raahen’ (2000).

I am giving below the detailed story of the film as it is not available anywhere online.

Kannagi (Meenakshi Seshadri) a TV journalist with Channel 16, has been assigned to cover the tribal uprising under the leadership of Rajappa (Milind Gunaji) during fires on tribals, killing some of them. Kannagi reports in her TV programme that the police forces had no reason to brutally repulse the peaceful demonstration. As a revenge, the police officer who is responsible for the killing of some tribals is kidnapped by Rajappa’s men and is hacked to death. There is a uproar among the people of the State for law-and-order problems. The State’s Chief Minister (Deepak Qazir) calls a press conference in which he reveals that the State Government has taken a decision to form a Committee under the chairmanship of a retired judge to look into the problems of tribals. Kannagi questions Chief Minister as to why no tribal representatives have been included in the Committee to which he replies that they first need to give up the uprising against the state government.

Rajappa is very much impressed by the reporting of Kannagi as her presentations on the TV is favourable towards tribals. He is also infatuated with her. So, he sends a message to her that he is ready to give his first ever interview to her provided she comes alone. Kannagi is happy but at the same time she is apprehensive about visiting alone due to the risk involved. While she was a looking for a person who could shoot while taking interview, she gets a reference of Shubhankar (Kanwaljeet Singh) who is a wild-life photographer. She picks him as her cameraman telling him that she is taking him for shooting for a documentary film on the wildlife in a forest. Shubhankar is actually an undercover commando of the police force which Kannagi is unaware.

After a couple of days of surveillance of Shubhankar by the Rajappa’s men in the forest, they are allowed to meet Rajappa in his hideout. During this period, Kannagi and Shubhankar become close. But both of them do not explicitly express their love for each other. On the other hand, Rajappa because of his infatuation of Kannagi spends time with her in the guise of showing her the life of tribals in the forest. In the meanwhile, Shubhankar has arranged commando forces to be ready in the vicinity of the forest as cover.

In one of his meetings with Kannagi, Rajappa reveals his love for her. He says that just to prove his love, he is prepared to die for her. On the other hand, Shubhankar after getting exposed as an under-cover commando, gets a reprieve from Rajappa simply because Kannagi tells him to do so at the cost of her life. He is taken out of the forest by two guards of Rajappa. However, they are killed by Shubhankar on the way, and he returns to Kannagi’s tent to formally tell her that he loves her, and it is his duty to save her from Rajappa.

The chief of the commando force (Shiva Rindani) joins Shubhankar. Both of them decide to make Kannagi as a bait to lure Rajappa to meet them on the negotiating tables under the assurance that he will not be arrested or killed even if the negotiation fails. Since this offer has come from Kannagi, Rajappa agrees to meet them against the strong advice of his Baba, the brain behind the tribal uprising. When Rajappa comes near the white flag, he is killed instantaneously by the commando forces which makes Kannagi very sad. She strongly feels that commando forces have gone against their assurances both to her and Rajappa. The next day, she gives a live TV news from the Bandipore forest about the death of Rajappa. She tells that she is against any killings whether by Rajappa or the police forces. The collective will of the people should prevail as to who should govern them.

The story of the film appears to be partly based on the life of Veerappan. Milind Gunaji in the role of a rebel leader of the tribals is named as Rajappa and he is shown to operate in around Bandipore forest region. However, there is a love angle added to his character which becomes his obsession and eventually his end. On the other hand, there is also a love angle between Kannagi and Shubhankar which leads to his defying the order from his chief to abandon the plan once he is exposed and return to the base at once. And what a coincidence! There are some similarities in the death of Rajappa and Veerappan. Rajappa in the film is killed in deceit by the undercover commando in the guise of a TV cameraman while four years later, Veerappan was killed in deceit by the Tamil Nadu Police Task Force, by a member who was in the guise of a driver of an ambulance van.

‘Do Raahen’ (2000) has six songs, all written by Javed Akhtar and set to music by Bhupen Hazarika. I am presenting the first song from the film, “Shaam Dhai Ban Mein Mehki Hawa” to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy and is picturised on Kanwaljeet Singh and Meenakshi Seshadri in the forest on their way to meet Rajappa (Milind Gunaji). In the song, some men of Rajappa are seen keeping a close surveillance on both of them.

The tune of the song sounds like that of a folk song. The santoor played in the prelude music gives an impression like a call of the valley. A search on the internet took me to an Assamese song, “O Bideshi Bondhu” written and sung by Bhupen Hazarika in the National Film Award winning Assamese film, ‘Chameli Memsaab’ (1975). The film was made with the same title in Bangla and Hindi in 1979 and the song with the same tune was also incorporated in these films.

I have also given below the audio clip of the Assamese original song for the comparison purpose. I find the rendition of Bhupen Hazarika in the Assamese film more emotional than in its counterpart in the film under discussion. The reason is that in the Assamese film, the song is for ‘missing the loved one’ while in the film under discussion, it is a love song.

‘Sutradhar’ (1987) was an off-beat film which was directed by Chandrakant Joshi. The main cast of the film included Smita Patil and Nana Patekar in the lead roles, supported by Girish Karnad, Gajanan Jagirdar, Nilu Phule, Ashalata Wabgaonkar, Madhu Kambikar, Kamalakar Sarang, Shrikant Moghe, Irshad Hashmi, Master Hrishikesh Joshi etc. Sudheer Moghe wrote lyrics and composed the songs for the film. The film was certified by Censor Board on 31/01/1986 and may have been released a year later as the film’s credit title starts with the film being dedicated to the late Smita Patil who passed away on 13/12/1986. As far as I know, this was the only film in which Smita Patil and Nana Patekar acted together in the lead roles.

‘Sutradhar’ (1987) was the only Hindi film which Chandrakant Joshi directed. The same was true for Sudheer Moghe as a music director and the lyricist. Another common thing about these two personalities was that both came to the film industry from unconnected fields. Both were multi-faceted personalities.

Kolhapur based Chandrakant Joshi (1944 – 20/12/2021) was an alumni of Sir J J School of Art, Mumbai. After graduation, he took the job of an art teacher in his hometown, Kolhapur, which he continued for a long time. Later, he joined Shivaji University, Kolhapur as the Head of the Department of Performing Arts for 5-years. From his younger days, Chandrakant Joshi was a film enthusiast which ultimately led him to the Marathi film industry as an art director, actor, director, producer, writer, and costume director. He was also associated with Marathi and Hindi theatres.

Towards the later part of his life, Chandrakant Joshi became a cinema activists. He set up Kalamahrshi Baburao Painter Film Society which organizes the annual Kolhapur International Film Festival. He was regarded as the encyclopedia of Marathi film industry. Chandrakant Joshi was engaged in organising another film festival when he fell unconscious. He was admitted in a hospital where he breathed his last on December 20, 2021, at the age of 77. One of his sons, Hrishikesh Joshi acted as a child artist in the film under discussion. A post-graduate from the National School of Drama, Delhi, Hrishikesh Joshi is an eminent actor in Marathi/Hindi films and theatres, TV serials and Web-series.

I was aware of Sudheer Moghe as a Marathi film lyricist from my younger days as I was very fond of his popular songs in a classic Marathi mystery thriller film, ‘हा खेळ सावल्यांचा’, 1976 (English meaning: Shadow Play). Later on, I came to know that more than as a lyricist, he was well-known as a Marathi poet and writer.

Sudheer Moghe (08/02/1939 – 15/03/2014) was born at Kirloskarwadi near Sangli. When recognition came to him as a poet, sometime in early 1970s, he resigned his job and shifted to Pune to concentrate on poetry writing. To take care of his livelihood, he turned lyricist in Marathi films which he had no intention to continue for long. His main focus was on poetry writing which for him was as necessary as the breathing. During 1987-2010, he presented his one-man show ‘Kavita Panopaani’ during which he would recite his poems from the memory, sometime in tune he composed. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi gave him the title of ‘Kaviraj’.

Sudheer Moghe became one of the most sought-after lyricists for Marathi films. He also wrote and composed lyrics in Hindi for a few TV serials. Despite becoming popular as a lyricist, Sudheer Moghe decided to quit as a lyricist in early 1990s as his nature was to try something different. In this pursuit, he became music composer, dialogue/screenplay writer, anchoring for radio and television programmes and lastly a painter.

Sudheer Moghe breathed his last on March 15, 2014, at Pune at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness. [With inputs from a Marathi article written by Hema Shrikhande, the elder sister of Sudheer Moghe in ‘Loksatta’ – March 15, 2015].

Sudheer Moghe’s elder brother Shrikant Moghe who was a well-known Marathi film and theatre actor, also acted in the film under discussion in the role of a sarpanch.

I watched ‘Sutradhar’ (1987) on one of the video sharing platforms.

It is a story of a young man, Kumar (Nana Patekar) who in his childhood, has witnessed his poor father getting beaten up by the henchmen of the landlord (Girish Karnad) for no fault of his. He has also seen landlord’s other atrocities. Kumar grows up to become a teacher with a disgust toward the landlord. Kumar transforms the village with his good social work with the help of Prerana (Smita Patil), the daughter of the School’s Headmaster, whom he eventually marries. Because of his good work, Kumar gets support from the villagers to stand for the election against the landlord and he wins.

With power in his hands, over a period of time, Kumar’s behaviour becomes just like that of the landlord whom he hated the most in his younger days. Now, Kumar’s primacy is to become more powerful by contesting election for the assembly seat. This is resented by Prerana who feels that with his zeal to become more powerful, he has neither time to pay attention to the family nor to the problems of villagers. She wants him to refrain from contesting assembly election which he rejects. Disgusted with his attitude, Prerana leaves Kumar and shifts to her father’s place.

The election politics create rifts between two groups of his supporters leading to the death of Bansilal (Kamalakar Sarang) one of his close associates who does not have a good reputation. Actually, this was the handwork of Kumar who feels that his association with Bansilal may affect his election prospects. The film ends with Kumar attending the funeral of Bansilal, assuring his widow and her young son that he would take care of them financially and leaves for his election campaign. The film brings out as to how power and politics can change the behaviour of a person from good to bad.

‘Sutradhar’ (1987) has six songs including one recitation of a shloka. The remaining five songs have been written by Brahmanand (1), Sant Kabeer (1) and Sudheer Moghe(3). All the songs have been set to music by Sudheer Moghe. I am presenting the film’s first song ‘ye shaam ke rangeen saaye’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Jyotsana Hardikar, her first playback singing in Hindi film. Sudheer Moghe is the lyricist as well as the music director for this song.

The song is picturised on Smita Patil and Nana Patekar who were the childhood friends in the village. They meet after a gap of 18 years as she was away in Shantiniketan for her education. She is impressed with his work for the betterment of the village and supports him in his works. This song is the culmination of their association into marriage.

Towards the end of the film when both Nana Patekar and Smita Patil have separated, a part of an additional stanza of this song is faintly heard in the background when Smita Patil remembers her association with Nana Patekar to her present position. No video or audio clip of the short background song is available as of now. The additional stanza which I got from a Marathi article written by Hema Shrikhande, the elder sister of Sudheer Moghe is as under:

Today 18th August 2022 is the eighty-eighth birthday of Poet, Lyricst, Writer, Director, etc. Shri Sampooran Singh Kalra whom we know by his pen name ‘Gulzar’ (born on 18.08.1934).

Gulzar Saab has come a long way in the film industry starting from ‘Shriman Satyawadi’ (1960) and ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961) to the recently released (on OTT) ‘Darlings-2022’ (where he wrote lyrics for a song).

Much has been written about him and most of us are well aware of his ‘cinematic excellence’ and his unique ‘poetry’ where he uses the ‘similes’ in his unique ways in his poetry and lyrics in Hindi Film Music.

There have been numerous posts on the blog about Gulzar Saab and there will be many coming in future. So, today, I am not going into the details of his movies and lyrics list which I like most or which have left an indelible mark on my mind. But I would like to mention here that while Gulzar Saab have done so much in all areas of writing, cinema, and poetry I have yet to read many of his works other than movies. However, in the case of movies I can say that I have watched many of the movies directed by him. And l loved them all.

One more thing which I am very fond of Gulzar Saab is his writings for children or his lyrics for the movies for children and the non-filmi albums of his for children (like ‘Karadi Tales etc). I would also like to mention his commentary in two audio albums one for film music i.e., ‘Fursat Ke Raat Din’ and one for Bhupen Hazarika’s song ‘Main Aur Mera Saaya’ which I like very much. Finally, I would like to mention his song for tele serial ‘Mirza Ghalib’ which is also one of my most favorite albums.

There are many things which one can write about him and his works in cinema and other than ‘cinema’. However, today we leave this for another day and straightway come to today’s song to celebrate Gulzar Saab’s birthday on the blog. (This song is lying with us since almost a decade now 😊).

This song is from the 1990 movie ‘Lekin’.

‘Lekin’ was directed by Gulzar for Dinanath Kala Mandir. Hridaynath Mangeshkar and Bal Phoole were the producers of this movie. It was presented by Lata Mangeshkar. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1990.

It had Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Amjad Khan, Alok Nath, Moon Moon Sen, Vijayendra Ghatge, Beena, Manohar Singh, Ram Mohan, Ajit Vachhani, Sunil Advani, Shabir Abbas, Masood Akhtar, Yash Sharma, GP Singh, Bashir Khan, Mohafiz Haider, S Madan, Harmeet Singh, Umesh Vyas, Mansi Upadhyay, Sapna Awasthy, Rashmi, Ahmed Siddiqui, and Baby Shabana Khan. Hema Malini made a guest appearance in this movie.

The story of this movie was written by Gulzar, who also wrote the screenplay, dialogues, and lyrics for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by Sadanand Shetty, Ravi, and Aadinath Mangeshkar.

This movie has eight soundtracks as mentioned on the blurb of the audio cassette of this movie. Music is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. I like all songs of this movie very much and this is one of my most favorite albums. Today’s song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and on screen it is lip-synced by Vinod Khanna.

Today, 4th October, is the 88th birthday of Sandhya Mukherjee. The grand old dame is one of the premier playback singers in Bangla cinema. In Hindi films, her contribution is limited to about 30 songs. Her involvement in Hindi films starts with the 1948 film ‘Jhoothi Kasmen’, and her singing assignments are spread over a decade and a half, till the mid 1960s.

A chance encounter with this song prompted the preparation of this post. I came across this song just a few hours ago, and listening to it was love at first hear. Such a lovely melody and arrangement, and such wonderful rendition, this song belongs to that category of unknown and hidden gems, which surprise the listener with their simplicity and beauty. I have listened to it many times since I discovered it earlier in the evening, and I do not seem to be getting enough of it.

The film is ‘Ratnadeep’ from 1952. The film is produced and directed by the legendary Debaki Kumar Bose, for the banner of Chitramaya, Calcutta. The cast of actors is listed as Anuva Gupta, Manju Dey, Molina Devi, Chhaya Devi, Tangamani, Harini, Bakul Ghosh, Abhi Bhattacharya, Pahadi Sanyal, Niteesh Mukherji, Tulsi Chakravarty, Kamal Mishra, Raj Kumar Soni, Sudheer  Chakraborty, Gokul Mukherji, and Gauri Shankar. The film is based on the Bangla novel of the same name, written by Prabhat Kumar Mukherjee.

Eight songs are listed for this film. The music director is Robin Chatterji. Two of the songs are traditional bhajans originally composed by Meerbai and Vidyapati. The remaining six songs have been written by the songwriters Pandit Madhur and Mahendra Pran. However, the lyricist for each individual song is not specifically identified.

We wish Sandhya ji a very happy 88th birthday. May she be blessed with many more years of good health and happiness.

A career that almost wasn’t at one time. His father, himself at the head of a famous film production company, did not want his own son to be associated with films and the film world. Maybe a very well intentioned direction to his offspring, knowing all the glittering and the sordid ins and outs of the industry. But then, destiny has its own will and its own ways to propel individuals in particular directions.

We are celebrating 95th anniversary of birth of one of the maestros of melody in the world of Hindi film music. Madan Mohan was just 51 when he left us in 1975. The world of film music is so much more richer that he was here and composed so many memorable ghazals and songs – from 1951 to 1975. The world of music is also so much more poorer, because he left us so young. One can never say with certainty about what could have been. But yes, one would surely feel – had he lived longer. . .

Way back in 1947-48, it was not that the young Madan was completely cut off from the film world. Being the son of Rai Bahadur Chunni Lal Kohli, one of the partners at the Filmistan studios, he had a very firsthand exposure to and familiarity with the exciting work that went on in a film studio. He was in any case, musically inclined, very inclined, since his childhood. A very less known piece of anecdotal history was recently discussed at our group get together in Delhi.

His first foray into the world of music actually is as a singer. Ghulam Haider Sb had recorded a duet in the voices Madan Mohan and Lata Mangeshkar, for the iconic film ‘Shaheed’ (1948). It was a children’s song, which was supposed to be picturized on the lead pair, when they were children (in the storyline). The song was recorded and made ready for filming. Before it could be put on the sets, Rai Bahadur Sb got a wind of it, and he prevailed upon Sashadhar Mukherji, who controlled the film production side of the company, to have that song deleted from the storyline. Sadly enough, his writ prevailed, and the song was taken off the film, as well as from the recorded tapes. No recording of this said duet song is available.

Our own Bakhshi ji, in one of his meetings with Sanjeev Kohli, son of Madan Mohan ji, had enquired about this episode and the fate of this very important recording. Sanjeev Kohli confirmed the episode, but also added with regret that even he has not been able to trace out this rare recording. Sanjeev has a lot of rare items available on tape that are connected with his father’s work, but this particular duet he could never trace.

Today, we are introducing a film that probably is the last film to be released, for which music was actively composed by Madan Mohan Sb. The film ‘Veer Zaara’ of 2004 does not count, in the sense that the music for that film has been adapted and arranged using some of the unused melodies that were created by Madan Mohan. The film ‘Chaalbaaz’ was initiated in 1974, while he was still alive, but due to whatever reasons, it could be released only in 1980.

After the release of ‘Mausam’ in 1975, and his passing away in the same year, the following films that carry music by him, got released in later years.

  • ‘Sharaafat Chhod Di Maine’ (1976)
  • ‘Saahib Bahadur’ (1977)
  • ‘Inspector Eagle’ (1978)
  • ‘Jalan’ (1978)
  • ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1980)

So there is a continued stream of his work getting released, for the five years immediately after his passing away. This would be a very interesting analysis to review his work post 1975. ‘Laila Majnu’, the Rishi Kapoor – Ranjeeta Thakur starrer, is of course well known for its songs. It would be an appealing exercise.

Another very interesting thing about the song being presented today is that the singing voices are of Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle. In an interview (available on YouTube here), Amit Kumar has stated that Madan Mohan was one of the first two music directors who called upon him to sing for them (the other being the duo of Sapan Jagmohan), outside of his singing under the direction of his father, Kishore Kumar. This song is probably Amit Kumar’s first song to be recorded by a music director other than his father.

The film is produced under the banner of Ravi Films, Bombay and is directed by Hari Mehra. The star cast is listed as Deepak Khanna, Jaya Kaushalya, Nadira, Anjana, Imtiaz, Kamal Kapoor, Heeralal, V Gopal, Leela Mishra, Hani Chaya, Atam Prakash, Master Nitin, David, Abhi Bhattacharya, Raj Mehra, and Jairaj. The four songs in this film are written by Yogesh and music, of course, by Madan Mohan.

Recorded sometimes in 1974, but eventually released in the film in 1980, the song is an interesting and somewhat unusual composition. Reading the lyrics, it feels as if the stanzas are almost in free form, and yet the tune that ties them together is very attractive.

The only song that Amit Kumar has sung for Madan Mohan. Listen and enjoy.

Missing Films of 1960s – 101

And yet, once again, another melodious and enchanting song. And once again, from a film that one has not heard anything about. The film is ‘Surya Devta’ from 1969 – as obscure as it can get. I have not heard of this film or its songs, before finding them in the Geet Kosh.

The film is produced by Alice Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Sharad Desai. The cast of actors is listed as Nirupa Roy, Ashish Kumar, Manimala, Sapru, Jeevan, Shekhar, Amrit Patel, Sarita Khatau, P Kailash, Sarita Devi, Shukla, Dalpat, Bhoj Kumar, and Kapoor.

The film has six songs listed. The lyrics are written by two poets – Madan and Bharat Vyas. Today’s song is written by Madan. The music is composed by Avinash Vyas. The singing voice is of Suman Kalyanpur.

As I am preparing this post, and checking the genre categories, I realize that this song is an opposite genre of the “Please Don’t Go” type songs. Something like “Please Let Me Go” song. 🙂 I can think of one or two other such songs.

But what a lovely melodious composition, and what a lovely rendering by Suman Kalyanpur. A song that surely should have been more heard and more known.

So, minus 1 and plus 1, we still got to the 100th Yippeee film yesterday.

Minus 1 because on 3rd April, Atul ji had announced the Yippeee-ing of the film ‘Razia Sultan’ (1983), after posting its ‘sixth + seventh’ songs together – an announcement that turned out to be incorrect. Avinash ji pointed out that there is still one more song to be posted from this film. With some more leg work and info-search we now have more detailed info about the song list of this film. Below is the details of the songs of ‘Razia Sultan’ that I had shared with Atul ji the same day, in email.

I just checked the 1981-90  volume compiled by Jagdish Purohit and Ghulam Qureshi, with the involvement of Suman Chaurasia of Indore. This volume was published as the HFM lovers were/are waiting for Hamraaz ji to bring out his next volume.

In this volume, the compilers have listed 12 songs for this film. Since ‘Razia Sultan’ is a well known film, and a landmark in itself, I am sure lots of information sources are available and there is less chance that the compilers would be in error. In a musical film like this, number of songs certainly would not be limited to 6/7.

The list of all songs, as per this volume, is

As per our blog listing, we have as yet covered 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and possibly 11. As per the singer list, the songs 9 and 10 seem to important loaded songs; 9 has 4 singers and 10 has 6 singers. Both these songs have Ustad Faiyaaz Ahmed Khan, and Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan in the list of singers.

Just like maybe Pakeezaah, the remaining songs are probably less heard, less popular ones, which may drop from the collective memory.  You may recall that the non-Ghalib items in Mirza Ghalib (3 in number) remained obscure for quite a long time, since the radio and the radio listening public focused on the Ghalib creations in this film.

So that was minus 1 for 3rd April.

However, Atul ji is quick to also point out that back on 16th Jan, we had actually Yippeee’d two films together on the same day. That had happened, because both Atul ji and I were separately working on two different Yippeee posts, and our communications to each other regarding the posts seemed to have crossed but not read by each other. So in quick succession, both he and I posted two Yippeee songs that day – “Gaadi Dilli Waali Chali” (‘Delhi Junction’, 1960) and “Soyi Soyi Chaandni Hai. . .” (‘Khazaana’, 1951). In his write up, Atul ji has noted that,

Coming to my observations that we need to reiterate our new year resolutions (Gregorian calender version) on new year (Hindu calender version) as well. On the first day of this year (viz Yesterday 15 january 2018), only the first half of the half the resolution (viz posting a debutant song for the day) was fulfilled till late in the night. Sudhir Ji had posted a “debutant” post for the day. I had noticed that he had planned for a “YIPPEE” post as well. But seeing that the “debutant” post had appeared so late, I was afraid that it might become a race against time to fully fulfil the new year resolution. So I decided to lend a helping hand to Sudhir Ji. I prepared this “YIPPEE” writeup and I decided to post it in case Sudhir Ji was strapped for time (which he certainly is these days).

Fortunately, I found that Sudhir Ji succeeded in posting the YIPPEE writeup just in the nick of time yesterday night, and it was that rollicking title song of “China Town”(1962), viz. Rangeen bahaaron se hai gulzaar China Town.

So the song that I had kept as the backup YIPPEE song was not required.

Today (16 january 2018), we find ourself in the same situation as yesterday. The “debutant” movie of the day was done and dusted with first thing in the morning by Sudhir Ji. Sudhir Ji then asked me for the list of YIPPiable movies, aiming to post the YIPPEE movie of today as well, while I concentrated on the O P Nayyar tribute post.

After the O P Nayyar tribute post was published late, I found that Sudhir Ji has prepared for the YIPPEE song of the day, and it was a song that was not available online as far as I can tell. But like last night, we are against racing against time and I do not find Sudhir Ji at the keyboard right now. So I feel that I need to step in and publish the backup YIPPEE song that I had prepared yesterday. That way, Sudhir Ji can publish his YIPPEE article on the next day.

In fact, as Atul ji was hastening to complete the above Yippeee post for that day, I was equally busy on my keyboard, and almost simultaneously – a difference of about 45 minutes, I too posted the Yippeee post for the day, only to realize immediately that the work is now duplicated. So I immediately went back into my post and added this footnote,

[Ed Note: It was only after this song got posted that I took a breather, only to notice that Atul ji has also already welcomed another film (the previous post) to Yippeee-land today. It most certainly seems like the ‘yippeee-ing hour’, what with two films racing to Yippeee-land, just within minutes of each other. 😀 😀 ]

So, the two miscues cancelled each other out, and we are firmly able to announce that 100 Yippeee films have happened in the first 100 days of this calendar year (Gregorian). 🙂

Now, moving beyond the century yesterday, we come to ‘IOI’ of the Yippeee train today. Atul ji had posted the penultimate song of this film yesterday. Yes, I refer to the 1965 film ‘Sangraam’ – a film that has a full list of very memorable songs. This film made its debut on our blog way back on 12th Nov, 2010. Just see the list below of the songs posted so far. Each one of these songs is a veritable gem – in a mood that is so representative of the music of the 1960s.

These songs represent a music that was full of verve, full of energy, full of a joyous expression of love, taking in a lot of influence of the western rock and pop genres. Rhythm was more or less the dominant temper of this music, which was made for a popular taste that was already initiated by an increasing influence of western rhythms on the young minds of this nation. The decade of the 1960s was the time when the joys of freedom and the pain of partition were both tending to fade into paler shades, getting better of the passing generations.

The film is produced under the banner of Film India, Bombay, and is directed by Babubhai Mistry. The cast of actors includes Dara Singh, Geetanjali, Randhawa, Swarn Kumari, Maruti, Aruna Irani, Uma Dutt, Ratnamala, Mridula, Vishwas Kunte, Amrit Rana, Yunus Parvez, Baijnath, Helen, and King Kong.

After his earlier cameo appearances in films of 1950s, the first lead role that Dara Singh landed was in the film ‘King Kong’ of 1962. This was followed by ‘Aawaara Abdullah’ in 1963, then ‘Ek Tha Alibaba’, ‘King of Carnival’, ‘Rustom e Baghdad’, also 1963. In 1964, we see him in ‘Aandhi Aur Toofaan’, ‘Aaya Toofaan’, ‘Hercules’, ‘Dara Singh’ (yes, a film titled after his own name), ‘Rustom e Rome’, ‘Baadshah’, ‘Veer Bhimsen’. So when we come to 1965, Dara Singh has already appeared in a lead role in 12 films in just three years. The reason I am making this observation is that when I viewed this film in preparation for this post, I found a very interesting aspect. In this film, he is accompanied in the star cast by his younger brother Randhawa. The two brothers have already appeared together in ‘Aawaara Abdullah’, ‘Hercules’ and ‘Veer Bhimsen’. This is their fourth film together. As I viewed this film, I realized that the dialogues of both are dubbed in voices other than their own. I have not had time to sample once again his earlier films (some of which I know I have seen earlier) to ascertain whether this dubbing aspect is present in any of his earlier films. I do remember reading, well a long time back, that in the initial years of his career, his diction of Hindi/Urdu dialogues was less than desirable, as his voice had a very strong Punjabi accent to it. But I did not realize that he would be going through more than a dozen films and still be required to have his dialogues dubbed. The voice of the dubbing artist is very familiar, but I am not able to place a name to it right now.

The film is a costume drama with a strong element of palace intrigues and lost and found siblings stories. The corrupt Wazir (prime minister) has the king assassinated, and usurps the throne for himself. The king has two sons. The nanny for the two children is able to escape the bloodshed in the palace, along with one of the princes. The Wazir kind of adopts the second son, and raises him on a diet of lies and misinformation, hiding the truth about the death of the king, his father. The Wazir has a daughter, whom he wants to get married to the prince-in-custody. The prince-in-custody also fancies the lady. But the lady had lost her heart to a commoner in one of the villages in the kingdom, during some interludes that are very conveniently created by the story writers. The person she fancies, is actually the other prince, who had been taken away by the nanny and was raised by her in anonymity. So the tale of this film is about how the two brothers at first are enemies on account of fancying the same lady; then some way through the film, the truth about siblings is revealed and they become a team to vanquish the scheming Wazir and reclaim their father’s kingdom. And yes, the younger sibling gracefully steps aside for his elder brother to take over. 🙂

The one more interesting thing that I note about this film is the long drawn fighting sequences. Regular fans of Dara Singh films will recall the name King Kong. Yes, we had a wrestler by this name in that era when freestyle wrestling was a hugely popular spectator sport with the likes of Dara Singh, Randhawa, Goldstein, Imam Bux, Sheikh Ali, Hamida Pehalwan and of course the Great Gama Pehalwan etc. being the big names billed for such events. Believe it or not, but that was an era when for a freestyle wrestling match between some great names, one could expect anywhere from 1 Lakh to 2 Lakh spectators to be present (a Lakh is 100,000).

King Kong was a hugely bulky wrestler. His real name was Emile Czaja, and he was of mixed Indian – Australian descent, born in Hungary. He became a professional wrestler in the sub-continent and also appeared for bouts in all of south east Asia and Japan etc. Like Dara Singh he also migrated into Hindi films during the late 1950s and 60s, and appeared in many films generally as part of the villain’s team that would give a thrashing the heores to start with, and then at the end, get a beating of their lives at the hands of the lead wrestler. On YouTube, there are a few video footage clips of actual wrestling matches between Dara Singh and King Kong. Both of them appeared in many Hindi films together.

King Kong makes an appearance in this film also, as one of the henchmen of the devious Wazir. He has an additional significant presence in this film, as he also plays the father to the the young lady (Aruna Irani) who is the love interest of Maruti, the sidekick of Dara Singh in the film, making up a very detailed CSP (comic side plot). He fights on the side of the baddies, but eventually gives in to the goodies, since his daughter is in love with one of the goodies team member.

Ah yes, so I was talking about the long drawn out fight sequences in the film. They begin to appear almost from the start of the film, continue regularly throughout. Given these segments, the CSP and the songs, the actual story and dialogues have very little room to maneuver themselves. Everything other than the fight sequences seem to be in a hurry to get themselves done with. 🙂

Today’s song is the sixth song in the film. And what a rollicking dance song this one is. The trio of music directors – Lala Asar and Sattaar seem to be outdoing themselves in getting through the songs of this film. The song is filmed as a group dance song. The occasion is that the Wazir’s daughter has fled her father’s palace, choosing to come to the village where Dara Singh resides with his mother (actually his nanny from the royal babyhood days). The Wazir’s soldiers are chasing her, and they have been given a good beating by Dara Singh, Maruti and their team. This song is a celebration of their victory. We see Dara Singh and Geetanjali (Wazir’s daughter) and Dara Singh’s ‘mother’ seated prominently amongst the audience watching this performance. Maruti is part of this group dance. The video clip that is available is somewhat out of focus, on account of colors being splayed a little, as the photochemicals on the celluloid have aged. The face of the lead dancer is not very clear, and before I hazard a guess as to her identity, I request other friends and readers to please help identify this actress.

Now, none of the regulars can say they have not heard this song. In a film that boasts of more than one song that competes for the title of the best song in the film, this song surely is one of the best songs in this film. Wow – that sure is saying something for the quality of songs of this film. In 1962, music director Ravi has been active as an independent music director for about seven years now, and he already has about 30 films behind him, that he has composed for. His films include such notable hits as ‘Ek Saal’ (1957), ‘Dilli Ka Thug’ (1958), ‘Ghar Sansaar’ (1958), ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’ (1960), ‘Ghunghat’ (1960), ‘Gharaana’ (1961), ‘Modern Girl’ (1961), ‘Bombay Ka Chor’ (1962) and many more. And then in 1962, out comes this Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen starrer called ‘China Town’ – and the popular response is “Baar Baar Dekho, Hazaar Baar Dekho”. Oh yes, the songs of this film – one just does not feel done with them, no matter how many times you have heard them.

Produced and directed by Shakti Samant, the cast of actors includes such notables – Shammi Kapoor, Shakila, Helen, Madan Puri, SN Bannerjee, Keshav Rana, TunTun, Rashid Khan, Polson, Samson, Shetty, Jeevankala, Mridula and about twenty more names.  Songwriter of all the eight songs in this film is Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music, already mentioned, is by Ravi.

Eight songs in all, seven of which have already been showcased on our blog. And we come to the yippeee night for this film, brining on board this last, but not the least, songs of this film. It is a lovely composition, and just by listening to it, even without the visual, the image that comes to mind is – Helen. Ravi has tried to recreate the magic of “Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu” – albeit a slower pace, and has done a great composition.

But wait. What is this that I discover? The song that we have always heard in the film, and also as generally available in most uploads – goodness that song is missing from the listings in Geet Kosh. This question took up most of my time today afternoon and evening. I must admit that either I have been forgetful, or plain ignorant. Other folks may already know this, but this song has two versions, which, as I discovered after some leg work on the internet and searching my own collection, are quite different from each other, in terms of wordings. The tune and the melody is exactly the same but the words are noticeably different.

The Geet Kosh listing shows the title of this song as “Laakhon Haseenon Se Hai Gulzar China Town”. But as we play the video clip of this film, this song appears as the film beginning song, with the title line changed to “Rangeen Bahaaron Se Hai Gulzar China Town”. This latter version is the one that is the most available in all the searches one makes online. It is almost as if the former version does not exist. I checked in my collection, and am relieved to find that I have both versions in the folder of this film. And then, with some more intense search online, I am finally also able to locate a Sa Re Ga Ma upload, which is the “Laakhon Haseenon” waala version. The upload comment specifically states that this recording is from the vinyl record prepared from the sound track. There is some error here possibly, because the sound track version is “Rangeen Bahaaron Se”. I checked some more and then I am able to locate an Eraksoldies upload of an SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corp) program that presents all songs of this film. Knowing this is an SLBC recording, these songs are quite surely from 78 rpm records. And this selection contains the “Laakhon Haseenon” waala version. I checked again in my collection, and sure enough, this version in my collection also is from a 78 rpm recording. So anyways. . .

What may have been the reason to make two versions, is not clear at this time. We know that it was an era that all songs were recorded twice, once for the 78 rpm record, and once for the final sound track. We see many instances that the two versions are different, in that there is either a different antaraa, or an additional antaraa in the sound track version. More noticeably, the difference in the two versions generally is the music – different lengths of preludes and interludes, maybe an extra couplet in the beginning, subtle variations in the music arrangement and the instruments used. However, it is only rarely that we see that there is a considerable variation in the wordings of different lines themselves. It is generally accepted that the 78 rpm version is released first. Also generally that both versions are recorded simultaneously. But yes, there are known cases where these two recordings may have been done at different points in time, as per circumstantial requirements. Recall the song of ‘Chhalia’ (1960) in which the song “Chhalia Mera Naam. . .” was re-recorded for sound track after the censors raised objections to some words in the original recording.

By that logic, it would seem that the “Laakhon Haseenon” waala version is recorded earlier and the “Rangeen Bahaaron Se” version which appears in the sound track was probably done later. The former, 78 rpm version carries two antaraas, and the latter soundtrack version carries three antaraas. And there is a sizeable modifications of words themselves. Now what prompted these wording changes – that needs to be explored. I would request our knowledgeable readers and friends to please add information related to this query.

Of the above listed songs, the “Yamma Yamma Yamma. . .” song actually includes two songs, which are listed at nos. 5 and 6 in the Geet Kosh. And the song “Bada Qaatil Hai Mera Yaar. . .” is the song listed at no. 8 in the Geet Kosh.

So we bring to Yippeee land, this most musical film, that started its journey on our blog close to – goodness, nine years. Wow. Maybe one day we shall do an analysis on the patterns in the time taken to bring all songs of a film on board. Maybe it brings out some interesting results.

Enjoy both these “Rangeen Bahaaren” and “Laakhon Haseeen” versions of the song. And welcome ‘China Town’ to Yippeee land. 🙂

Today is 1st August 2017 – the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Dada. He would have been 104. Phew! Whatever I know of Bhagwan Dada or Bhagwan is all hearsay and whatever I have read up on the various sites on the net.

Though I have been discussing six to seven songs a day everyday for the last five days, I found myself at a strange dilemma. Most of the songs discussed on the day are decided at the spur of the moment by me in the morning (some on the last evening). But today, I found myself stumbling against songs that I found truly special and outstanding. They were songs that deserved special writeups and special occasions. And if I devote time to write special writeups for them, I will run out of time that I need to post my target number of songs for the day.
