Today’s song is a beautiful Lata song from the film Aan Baan-1956.
The film was a Costume film telling us an age old story about an old dilapidated king, ambitious evil Rajkumar, a Princess in love with the enemy state prince and as expected a Happy end confirming that ” Good prevails over the Bad”. This type of childish stories had slowly failed to entertain the audience, who looked for some fresh different stories set in the current social scene.
The film was made by the producer, director D.D.Kashyap under his own banner – Kashyap productions, Bombay. Kashyap was a director who directed only 15 films in more than 20 years, but he gave us some Hit and popular films like Nai kahani-1943 (his Debut film as a Director), Chaand-1944 (First film of Prabhat to try an outside director), Badi Bahen-1949 (one of the best Musical films ever), Aaram-1951 (excellent Lata songs), Halaku-1956 (all 8 songs by Lata) and Maya-1961.
The cast of the film was Nalini jaywant, Usha Kiran, Ajit, Mahipal, Pran, Ulhas, Man mohan krishna, Maya Devi, Nazir and others. There were 7 songs written by Qamar Jalalabadi and the best thing about this film- music was composed by Husnlal-Bhagatram. Though the MD pair was in their last lap of career, (after this film in 1956, they did only 9 more films in next 10 years till 1966, before packing up ), they still had their spark working, albeit weakly ! One of their popular songs from this film was ” Aji iss phani duniya mein, muhabbat ke siwa kya hai ” sung by Asha Bhosle and Mubarak Begum, their only duet. Today’s song is the 5th song to be presented here. The story of the film was….
When the Maharani of Shivgarh was on the deathbed, she asked others of the family to take care of her daughter Jai Kumari. But all the others were of different natures. Her father was an old warrier. Elder brother Devisingh believed in peace and co-existence. Younger brother Amar singh believed in the might of the sword and wanted the throne for himself.
When Devi singh fell in love with a dancer heera, Amar singh wanted to rebel against him, but Jai Kumari supported elder brother and got him married to Heera. Amar singh, however, continued troubling the family. Fed up, the king took back all his ranks and honour and boycotted him from the family. Only Jai Kumari helped him to regain all his honours.
In the meantime, Jai Kumari fell in love with Karan Singh, Prince of the neighbouring enemy state Raigarh. Taking this opportunity, Amarsingh waged a war with the king and brother. Amar singh won the battle and the king and brother were arrested and sent to jail. Jaikumari herself went to jail along with father and brother.
When Karan Singh knows this, with the help of sympathisers in Shiv Garh, he attacks the state. The king, brother and sister are freed and Amar singh gets killed in the battle. Devi singh becomes the king. Jai Kumari and Karan singh get married. Thus all is well. The audience jumps up like a child and goes back to their homes, greatly relieved !
One of the actors in the cast is Manmohan Krishna. He was an unusual entity in the Hindi film industry, A highly educated man with a stiff spine, a social worker, an IPTA worker, a person, who due to his nature, could never mix with film people, he always kept away from filmi parties too.
MANMOHAN KRISHNA was born on 11-8-1908, at Lahore in Punjab. He was a very studious person and always stood first in school. He completed his M.Sc. in Physics and started working as a Physics lecturer in a Lahore college. He was very fond of singing and also sang on Lahore Radio. Once when V. Shantaram visited Lahore, he heard Manmohan’s singing on stage and was impressed. Shantaram offered him the lead role in his forthcoming film, “Matwala Shair Ramjoshi”-1947, In this film Manmohan sang 6 solos and 3 duets with Zohrabai Ambalewali. However, his first song as a playback singer was in Shantaram’s film, ” Jeewan Yatra”-1946, under Vasant Desai’s baton.
In his career of more than 40 years, he acted in 183 films and directed 1 film – Noorie-1979. He also sang 24 songs in 8 films, namely Jeewan Yatra-46, Matwala Shayar Ramjoshi-47, Andhon ki duniya-47, Apna Desh-49, Afsar-50, Aaram-51, Railway Platform-55 and Shehar aur Sapna-1963. During his stay in Bombay, he anchored a Radio show ” Cadbury’s Phulwari” in the 50’s.
Manmohan Krishna was connected with Indian Peoples Theatre i.e. IPTA and acted in few of their dramas. Being an educated person, he was impressed with Nehruvian Secularism. He worked in films like Shehar aur Sapna by K. A.Abbas as well as the first Indo-Soviet film Pardesi-1957. He also got the Film Fare award for playing the role of Abdul Chacha in the film Dhool ka Phool-64. A song in this film ” Tu Hindu banega na Musalman banega ” shot on him, became very popular.
Being a member of the intelligentia, he could not sell himself nor gel into the Hindi filmi world fully. He always fought against injustice. He established ‘ Yuvak Biradari ‘ for young Indians, which became a big organisation in due course.
He was a favourite of the Chopra Brothers and acted in most films made by them. Some of his famous films were Deewar, Trishul, Humraaz, Insaaf ka Tarazu, Joshila, Kanoon, Kala Pathar, Dhool ka phool, Waqt, Naya Daur etc. etc. He also worked in 12 Punjabi films. He was prominently spotted in any role due to his thick bushy eyebrows.
In Hindi films, he rarely got a hero’s role, barring few films, because of his ordinary look. He had no looks required for a Hero’s role in a commercial film, in those days. He was of course an excellent Character Artiste. Due to his nature, he kept away from Filmi parties and groupism. He had no real friends in the film industry. Manmohan krishna did not keep good health in his last few years and died at the age of 82 years, in Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Bombay, on 3-11-1990.
( Based on some information from wiki, ‘Beete kal ke sitare’ by Shriram Tamrakar,muVyz, HFGK and my notes. Thanks to all.)
Today’s song is a very good song by Lata Mangeshkar. I had observed that in all films of Husnlal Bhagatram, Lata had given her best efforts. Enjoy this sad song….
Song- Pi Pi ki boli na bol papeehe (Aan Baan)(1956) Singer-Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
pi pi ki boli naa bol
boli na bol papeehe
ae ae ae ae
kehna na apna dard kisi se
kehna na apna dard kisi se
pi pi ki boli na bol
jaan gayi tere dil ka main dukhda
tujhse bhi tera preetam hai bichhda
rota hain duniya mein kaun khushi se
ae ae ae ae
kehna na apna dard kisi se

pi pi ki boli na bol
tu bhi deewana aa aa aa
main bhi deewani
teri kahaani hain meri kahaani
donon hi tadpe dil ki lagi se
ae ae ae ae
kehna na apna dard kisi se
kehna na apna dard kisi se
pi pi ki boli na bol
dil jo mile to bichhadna bhi hoga
jalna bhi hoga tadapna bhi hoga
kyun ro raha hain pagle abhi se
ae ae ae ae
kehna na apana dard kisi se
kehna na apana dard kisi se
pi pi ki boli na bol
boli na bol papeehe
ae ae ae ae
kehna na apana dard kisi se
kehna na apana dard kisi se
pi pi ki boli na bol

This Week, That Year – 7
———————————–
30May – 05Jun, 2011
Celebrations today – the first item of order. Yes, the two numbers above are telling a telling tale (pardon the pun please). I have been on board now, well, it seems all my life now. Yes, so many years ago. And as we continue this relentless beat forward, I continue to keep marveling – at the fact that the blog seems to have gotten a life of its own and the bandwagon continues to chug along merrily.
It is stated often – the destination is not of any import. It is the journey that has to be enjoyed. And as this blog keeps growing from height to height and going from strength to strength, these minor milestones and even the major milestones have really become a matter of routine. Ok yes – another century, well, this number of days, well, this average of songs per day, well. . . As I said, just a matter of routine that these stations come and go past quickly.
Ah but the journey – that is where the real joy is emerging. Yes, we had those days when 5,000th and 10,000th songs were such a big deal and Atulites of all shades were pinned to the emails and whatsapp chats as if the World Cup finals were on and both Gavaskar and Tendulkar were on crease, going full blast. I am sure the regulars have those days cemented into memory. The heady heights that we used to cheer and celebrate about.
I do not mean to say that we do not or will not continue to celebrate the milestones. But the drummer’s beat has changed somewhat. The magic of the daily routine is just unbelievable. There is such a serene comfort in the incessant regularity. A trust, a confidence, just like the Sun rising every day (well, some rare days may have clouds also). But then the Sun is there, and will appear in all its glory tomorrow morning again.
I know that most bandwagoneers will agree with me – the blog has become a foundational regularity in life, and whether or not I will open the browser early morning, I know that a new post will be there.
A new post, a new song – another gem to ruminate on today, from the ocean that is the Hindi film song. With the incessant dipping into this ocean every day, and the incessant pulling up of pearls and gems of the first water – one starts to believe. Starts to believe that there is a blessing that has descended on this concept, and the upon the fortunate ones who are connected with it, making our own, and many other lives meaningful.
The heart brims over, the mind stalls, the words slow down – enough been said, and yet, more than that enough still remains to be said. I had come across a quote from Rumi couple of days back – “The closer I get, the more I see how far I am”.
And the bandwagon chugs along. . .
4,700 days, 16,400 posts. And you must consider, the number of songs contained therein are much more – on account of multi part and multi version songs. By my tally of data that we are maintaining, the song count stands today, with this post – 17,010.
And there is still an ocean awaiting us. . .
Ok so, the week that was 30th May to 5th June in 2011 – the summer of 2011. Goodness, one of the slowest weeks I have written about in this series so far. Three dot days, four active days, and a total of 13 posts published. Atul ji, where were you located in the summer of 2011?
Let’s do the numbers first. A total of 13 posts and 12 films are showcased. One film ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) comes in with two posts.
We had 4 debut films this week. No films got yippeee’d during the week. Of the 12 films that got featured, 7 films have since been yippeee’d. If we factor in the possibly untraceable songs, then we have two more films being Yippeee’d conditionally. Hmm, that is a very good %. Only three films out of the 12 posted, are still showing the pending status.
Looking at the distribution by decades, we have the following data,
1930s 1
1940s 5
1950s 6
1970s 1
Majority focus is on the Godlen Era.
No milestones got breached this week.
Here is the week’s data in table form.

After a no show on 30th May, the next day (31st May) has three films that featured on the blog – ‘Tansen’ (1943), ‘Meena Bazaar’ (1950) and ‘Do Phool’ of 1958. All three films have been Yippeee’d. And that actually posed a problem for me.
On 1st June, again three posts and three films – ‘Bhakt Soordas’ (1942), ‘Bholi’ (1949) and ‘Hyderabad Ki Naazneen’ (1952). ‘Bhakt Soordas’ is now already at the conditional Yippeee status. One song of this film, “Manuva Krishan Naam Rate Jaa.” is not traceable. No record was cut, and since the film is not available as yet, no way to say whether and how this song was presented in the film.
‘Hyderabad Ki Naazneen’ is Yippeee’d. And then ‘Bholi’ from 1949 still has many songs to go.
The problem that I mentioned in the 2nd previous paragraph, is that I do not have an available film from 31st May, to select a song for the post. And so I had to resort to pick a song from 1st June, and that to from, film ‘Bholi’, the only film from that date still having pending status.
On 2nd June, four films were added. ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954), ‘Chor Bazaar’ (1954) and ‘Aakhiri Sajda’ from 1977 have already been Yippeee’d. The film ‘Zameen Ke Taare’ still remains pending.
‘Mirza Ghalib’ also featued in the post list on 3rd June. Two more films came up that day – ‘Pooran Bhagat’ (1933) and ‘Bhanwra'(1944). ‘Mirza Ghalib’ being Yippeee’d already, ‘Bhanwara’ entered the conditional Yippeee status, since all songs of this film are posted, except for one, the song being ” Yeh Dua Maango Haseenon Aashikon Ka Dum Rahe” is still to be traced. That leaves behind ‘Pooran Bhagat’ from 1933 which still has a lot of songs still awaiting to be posted.
The song that I have selected from ‘Bholi’ for this post here today, is a gem of a rendition by Shamshad Begum. This song is vintage Shamshad. One can clearly hear the ‘khanak’ in the voice, as she goes on to present a song of first realization of love. The words are very craftily woven by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and the music is by Pt. Gobind Ram. A beautiful creation by any standards.
‘Bholi’ is produced under the banner of Murli Movietone, Bombay, and is directed by Ram Daryani. The star cast is listed as Geeta Bali, Prem Adeeb, Shashikala, Jeevan, Gulab, Khatoon, Nazeera, Sheila, Ishu, Gope, and Nawab. There are 10 songs listed, all from the pen of Ishwar Chandra Kapoor with music by Pt Gobind Ram.
Ok so, I have not used this word so far in the article.
But yes, Congratulations – very much in order.
Congratulations to us all.

Today 23rd November’2020 is ninetieth birth anniversary of singer Geeta Dutt (born on 23rd November’1930).
She passed away on 20th July 1972 at the age of forty-one only. Reading her life story stirs the heart even today, and the Hindi Film Industry and Hindi Film Music will always feel sad for losing her so early.
Geeta Dutt was one of the legendary singers of yesteryears and sang many for Hindi film, Bengali films. Also, she sang many non-filmy Hindi and Bengali songs.
I will not go into her detailed biography or whatever has been written about her on this blog earlier. And, also, I will not mention her songs which are my favorite and those I like very much. That will be a long list. Today I would only like to pay my tributes to her with a song from an unreleased movie ‘Hamraaz’.
This movie is said to be made somewhere in between ‘1941-1950’.
I had come across songs of this movie in 2014 and had then shared fours songs from this movie to our editors then. At that time the year of this movie was mentioned as ‘1950’ on some links and ‘1940’ on others so it was not clear.
However, somehow the movie remains still to be launched on the blog in the ‘rush’ of other priorities.
When I had initially shared the songs from this movie, I was not having its detailed information, but now with the help of HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950) we can have this brief about this movie.
HFGK Vol-II 91941-1950) lists this movie as ‘Un-released’ movie of ‘1941-1950’.
On page number 607 – Appendix-1 Movie number 1214 this movie is mentioned as presented by ‘Rahnuma Pictures’.
However, its star cast and director is not mentioned. Music director is mentioned as Shankar Lal.
Lyricist names are mentioned as Shyam Hindi and Kamran Momin.
The list mentions total eight songs in this movie.
S. No | Song Title | Lyricist |
---|---|---|
01 | Ga re manwaa gaa | Shyam Hindi |
02 | Ghoonghat mein sharmaaye dulhaniya | Kamran Momin |
03 | Baat kuchh aisi wah hamse kah gaye | Shyam Hindi |
4 | Cham cham chamken taare | Shyam Hindi |
05 | In do matwaale nainon mein | — |
06 | Aabaad hai saraa jahaan | Shyam Hindi |
07 | Khushi chaaron taraf chhaayi | Shyam Hindi |

This song is a rare non-film song rendered by Umaraziya Begum.
Based on the details (erroneous, as we now know them to be), the uploader of this song has listed this as a song of the 1942 film ‘Ek Raat’, sung by Neena. The names of the song writer and the music director are also provided along with this upload.
Our friend Sadanand ji was the first one to raise the doubt about the details of this song. Later, we now have a confirmation from Shri Girdharial ji Vishkarma (of Jodhpur). Girdharilal ji has the original record of this song, as published by Jien – o – Phone company.
As per the details available, this song is sung by Umaraziya Begum. The lyricist of this song is not known. Based on certain other inputs, Girdharilal has provided the input that the music director for this NFS song most likely is Ghulam Haider Sb. As per him, there are many other songs in the voice of Shamshad Begum and Umaraziya Begum, that are released on Jien O Phone records, and all are composed by Ghulam Haider Sb.
Thanks to Sadanand ji and Girdharilal ji, for identifying the correct information about this song.
“Ek Raat”(1942) was produced and directed by W Z Ahmad for Shalimar Pictures. The movie had Prithviraj Kapoor and Neena in lead roles with Mubarak, K N Singh, Feroza, Gulab, Prakash, Rajkumari Shukla, Bibi etc.
The movie had 8 songs. One song from the movie has been covered in the past.
This movie was the debut movie of Neena (actual name Shahida) who was launched with an unprecedented media blitz and fanfare prior to the release of the movie. Mr Sadanand Kamath, while covering the first song of this movie has discussed this matter in detail.
Here is the second song from “Ek Raat”(1942) to appear in the blog. This rare song, like the earlier song, is sung by Neena. The lyricist of this movie (for 7 out of 8 songs), including for this song, was Pt Indrajeet Sharma, and not Pt Indra, as is erroneously mentioned in most onine sources.
Music was composed by S K Pal.
The song was picturised on Neena herself.
