Blog Day :

4228 Post No. : 15437 Movie Count :

As valentine day party songs go, this one is not really so big on the event. Except for the heart shaped balloons, there is no other indication of this being a valentine day song. Point to be noted is that, the blog seems to have ignored this occasion also, along with a host of other days that are specifically designated throughout the year. Whatsapp university does a quite adequate job of reminding us of all these days, be it mother’s day, father’s day, couple day, hug day, chocolate day to name a few. These are just the days which came readily to mind, because a few of them were during this past week.

I remembered this song today just out of the blue from the film “Dil to paagal hai”. I remember seeing this film in theatre, must be in 1997. My elder sister was very fond of Yash Chopra films and the star cast was, as it is very much ascending stars of the era. Nevertheless I remember at one point in the film, where I told my sister that I don’t want to see this film and we are leaving. Which point I don’t care to share here.

This song talking of ‘Chaand’ & ‘Raat’ is actually compliant with my posts series titled ‘Chaandni Raatien”. Composer is Uttam Singh and the lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. It is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan, Karishma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit. Shah Rukh and Karishma are at a Valentine Day party, whereas Madhuri Dixit is at her home, dreaming and singing along. At this point I think Shah Rukh and Madhuri haven’t met each other, but are scheduled to meet and fall in love. This song is in anticipation of the things to come in the story, because you see they have read the script and the song was ready, so the situation had to be created for it. Udit Narayan sings for Shah Rukh and Lata Mangeshkar is singing for Madhuri and Karishma both. The song is very catchy too despite being a mood song.

The film is full of melodious hit songs which were a rage then. Film and the songs won quite a few awards too. This song is having the tunes of other songs from the same film, as interlude. Again as I said the characters are anticipating the songs to feature in the film later on. Good imagination all around.

Song-Chaand ne kuchh kaha raat ne kuchh suna(Dil To Paagal Hai)(1997) Singers-Udit Narayan, Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Uttam Singh
Chorus

Lyrics

Hey hey
oo ho ho ho ho
Hmmm mmmmm
La la la laa laaaa

Chaand ne kuchch kahaa
Raat ne kuchh sunaa
Chaand ne kuchch kahaa
Raat ne kuchh sunaa
Tu bhi sun bekhabar
Pyaar kar
Oh ho ho pyaar kar
Aayi hai chaandni

Oh ho ho pyar kar

Chaand ne kuchch kahaa
Raat ne kuchh sunaa
Tu bhi sun bekhabar
Pyaar kar
Oh ho ho pyaar kar

Kya kahoon kya pataa
Baat kya ho gayee ee
Dillagi ye mere
Saathh kya ho gayee
Ik ishaara hai yeh
Dil pukaara hai ye
Ik ishaara hai yeh
Dil pukaara hai ye
Iss se churaa na nazar
Pyaar kar
Oh ho ho pyar kar
Chaand ne kuchch kahaa

Uss ko pataa bhi nahin
Kya gila ham Karen
Wo bewafaa bhi nahin
Ham ne jo sun liyaa
Uss ne kahaa bhi nahin
Ae dil zara soch kar
Pyaar kar
Oh ho ho pyar kar

Hey hey
Ah ha ha aa haaaa
La la laa laa laaa laaa
Chaand ne kuchch kahaa

Today’s song is from a Costume drama film, Dankaa-1954. The film was made by Goodwill Pictures and the director was J P Advani. The Music Director was Aziz Hindi aka Aziz Khan. The cast of the film was Nimmi, Amarnath (Bharadwaj), Mohana Cabral, Sunder (Singh), Heeralal, Neelam, Shivraj, Om Prakash etc etc.

From the day films were made in Silent Mode till about late 1960s, Stunt films, Action films, Costume dramas, Folk story films, Mystery films, Murder and crime films, Mythology and Religious films, Social and Reforms films, Jungle films, Arabian Night story films etc etc were made. The audience had an open choice, because, at a time, films of several genres were available for its entertainment. I can not exactly describe what type of films are made nowadays, but I am sure, most Genres – as mentioned above, are not being made.

Films for all Mental ages were made and each could make a choice of his liking. Nowadays, all age groups see the same films. Technology has developed tremendously. Special Effects (SFX) can do wonders in a film. In 1938, when Prakash films made their first Sci-Fi film ” Khwabon ki Duniya” ( which was a copy of Hollywood film ‘ The Invisible Man’-1933, which was based on the famous H G Wells’ novel of the same name, written and published in 1897), Babubhai Mistry used Black curtains and Black threads to create illusions of an Invisible Man’s actions, successfully and the audience had fingers in mouth with awe and wonder ! For next many years, Babubhai Mistry had earned a Moniker of ” Kaala Dhaga” in the industry ! These days such scenes are a child’s play. I truly miss those costume and stunt films, but one must flow with the flow !

The name SHIVRAJ in the cast always created curiosity in my mind. I had seen this actor in several films. I was unable to get any information on him anywhere. His role as the meek husband of Kaushalya (Manorama) in film Seeta aur Geeta-72 is unforgettable. When I started work on this post, I tried again. This time I found an article – actually an Obitury – on him in The Hindu, dated 4-6-2017. Of course it described in it only about his different roles. From some other source, I got his date of Birth and Death and a little other information.

Shivraj was born on 11-6-1920 in Madhya Pradesh. His full name was Shivraj Pandey. After doing his graduation, he came to Bombay in search of a good job, but joined film industry. To start with he worked in Minerva as an assistant in administration, He did some film roles too without getting credited. He left Minerva and got a role in film Sarai ke bahar-47. This was a film made by National studios. His next films were Ziddi, Majboor, Batohi, and Asha all in 1948. Then there was no looking back. Shivraj acted in 212 films. He directed 1 film, Jaani Dushman-57. He retired from work in 2000, but his last released film was Yaar meri zindgi-2008. Shivraj died on 4-6-2017.

One of the actors in this film was Om Prakash. He was one of those actors whose presence in the film is taken for granted. He was a very popular person in the industry. His comedy acting was typical. I can not forget his role in film ” Chupke Chupke”-75. His facial expression had no parallel.

Omprakash was mainly a comedian, but he had been a hero, a villain and a character artiste too. Of course the major part of his career is as a Comedian. He was one of the most respected artistes of his generation, in the industry. For some time, he floated a Film production company in collaboration with his close friend C. Ramchandra. When their films flopped,he simply dissolved the company and later produced films on his own and he directed them too. When his film Jahan Ara-64 flopped miserably, giving him a heavy monitory loss, he stopped producing films.

Omprakash was a lover of life, joy, jokes, playing cards and he was the happiest, when among his friends. Not many people know that the famous producer Pachhi ( Around the world etc) was his younger brother. Omprakash’s first film was ‘Guru Ghantal’-37 where he worked uncredited. He next did a small role in Bombay Talkies film ‘Anjaan’-41, but his career started when Pancholi got him a role in film ‘Daasi’-44. He earned Rs 80 for this film.

Omprakash worked in 293 films and directed 4 films namely, Duniya Gol hai-55, Gateway of India-57, Kanhaiya-59 and Chacha Zindabad-59, all produced by him alone. There were some films like Annadata-72, buddha mil gaya-71, Charandas-77 etc made keeping him as a central character. He sang 6 songs in 5 films- Meena Bazar-50, Ladki-53, Bindiya-60,Vardaan-74, and Ghar ki Izzat-94. HFGK mentions his name as a Lyricist for a song in film Dost-54.

OMPRAKASH BAKSHI was born on 19-12-1919 at Lahore. At the age of 12 ,he started learning classical music. In 1937,he joined A.I. Radio on a salary of Rs.25 pm.

He took the pen name of ‘FATEH DIN’. He presented entertaining programmes. He was very popular in Punjab and Lahore, during that period. In private parties he was a centre of attraction. In one such Party, where he was regaling his audience, he was noticed by Dalsukh Pancholi and he offered Omprakash a role in DAASI-1944.Then came Dhamki-45 and Aayee Bahaar-46. In Shehar se door-46, he was a co Hero with Al Nasir and later in Ghungroo-52 he was the Hero opposite Sumitra Devi.

Just when he was settling in films, partition took place and he landed in Bombay. His first film in Bombay was Lakhpati-48 and then there was no looking back. He acted as Villain in Naach, Nirdosh, Baghi Sipahi etc. He was a good actor and played a variety of roles. In many films he was shown as a Pehelwan. In Pehli Jhalak, his bout with Dara Singh became the film’s attraction. Even in Chameli ki Shaadi, he was a pehelwan.

There were many films made with him as a central character like, Annadaata, Dus lakh, Sadhu aur shaitan. Dil Duniya Daulat -72 was a remake of Pugree-48 in which he did the role which was done by comedian Ghori in Pugree.

C.Ramchandra was his best friend. They together produced Duniya gol hai-55,jhanjhar-53 and Lakeeren-54. The trailer of Duniya Gol hai was more interesting than the film. In this trailer, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Ashok kumar come on the screen one after another and say-I have directed this film,so you must see it. Lastly Omprakash comes on screen and says,” Ye sab pagal hain. Picture to maine direct kee hai”. Anyway all the 3 films flopped despite good music. Later Omprakash alone produced films like Gateway of India-57, Chacha Zindabad-59, Sanjog-61 and Jahan Ara-64. After Jahan Ara’s colossal losses he stopped producing films and converted his office into a Card Game centre for friends.

His last days-

He lived in Union Park, Chembur, a suburb of Mumbai. He died at age 78 in Mumbai, India of a heart attack. The actor who was always so full of life was still full of life till just two days before his death. He knew he was not well. He knew he was suffering from various complications but he never gave up his zest for life till his heart betrayed him. He kept calling friends to play a game of Rummy or just chat. He had an office at the Roop Tara Studios which was only used for “Rummy sessions” and “chat sessions”. Then, some years ago, he shifted his office to the suburbs to make it more convenient for his friends. He attended this office regularly till his health started failing him. He was confined to his bungalow (next to Ashok Kumar’s bungalow). He suffered his first heart attack in his own bedroom. He was rushed to the Lilavati Hospital where he suffered a second heart attack and went into a coma from which he never came out. He was declared dead at 1.30 pm on February 21, 1998. The news spread fast and the industry was shocked and stunned because he was the kind of man who could not be easily associated with something so sombre and solemn like death.

Film Duniya Gol Hai-55 had a starcast of Karan Dewan, Anita Guha, Kuldeep Kaur, Sunder, Omprakash etc. Since this was his First film as a Director, as many as 13 actors worked in the film as “Guest Artistes” ! He was so popular that he had to say No to some more actors ready and eager to work as guest Atrtistes in this film. Till this film, it was a sort of record.

The Hero in today’s film was Amarnath. Amarnath (Bharadwaj) is one of the “same name confusions” victims. There were 2 Pt. Amarnath Music Directors, 1 actor Amar, 1 actor Amarnath and 1 actor/Director (K.) Amarnath. This Amarnath was born in Hafizabad, in Gujaranwala district of Punjab (Now in Pakistan) in 1922. He started acting in 1939 with Kidar Sharma’s “Dil hi to hai”. Graduating from doing small roles he was made the Leading Man in Dalsukh Pancholi’s film “Patjhad”, started in 1947 opposite Meena (Shorey). Pancholi had to flee Lahore due to Partition riots, but he carried the negatives of Patjhad. Though the film was censored in India in 1948, it seems it was never released.

Amarnath starred as Hero in many other films, like Naghma E Sehra-45, Papiha re-48, Barsat ki ek raat-48, Swayam sidha-49, Nai Bhabhi-50, Kamal ke phool-50, Sheesh Mahal-50, Jalte Deep-50, Johri-51, Nai zindagi-51 , Nirmohi-52, Nirmal-52, Izzat-52, Bahu Beti-53, Nav Durga-53, Toofan-54, Danka-54 etc. Then he switched over to side roles. In all, he worked in 81 films (CITWF data). His last film was Kaun ho tum-70.

Now something about the film’s Music Director….Ustaad Waheed Khan was a well known and respected player of Sitar and Surbahar. His place in the Etawah Gharana was high up. He had 3 sons. Bande Hassan,Hafiz khan and Aziz Khan. Waheed khan was very keen that his sons should continue his profession, earn a name and shine in classical music of Etawah Gharana. He thought working for music in films was below their dignity and a shame. Bande Hassan specialised in vocal music and became a famous qawali exponent. Second son Hafiz khan, after initial training in classical music turned to film singing, without father’s knowledge. Not only that,he also accepted the pen name of Mastana-awarded by composer Meer Sahib- to hide his identity from father. The third son Aziz Khan also went the film way, using the name Aziz Hindi sometimes.

Though Aziz Khan did not continue his family profession,he ensured that his son Pervez took the training and became an International Sitarist, settling in USA. Even son of Pervez- Shakir became a famous Sitarist. he continues the Etawah gharana tradition now.

A senior RMIM member Mr. Jayraman reported in 2008 that he had traced and found and met the only son of Hafiz khan Mastana,in Mahim,Mumbai. His name was Zaheer aka Alla Rakha. The son confirmed all the above facts and also that Aziz Khan was Aziz Hindi.

Though this fact was confirmed, books like ‘ Dhunon ki yatra’ (Pankaj Raag) mentioned Aziz Khan and Aziz Hindi as two different persons. Though the book was published in 2006, he can not be blamed for this, however. But since it is mentioned in a book, for many readers this wrong information is ‘authentic’ and this is quoted by many in their writings. This is because the findings of Mr. Jayaraman did not get enough publicity widely.

Aziz Hindi gave music to 17 films and composed 127 songs. His first film as an MD was Pandit ji-46 and the last one was Chalta Purja-58. Then he retired and migrated to US to be with his son.

Today’s song is a good song. I liked it. You may also like it…

“Bheeshm Pratigya”(1950) was directed by Vasant Rao Painter for Vishal Chitra, Bombay. This mythological movie had Nargis, Shahu Modak, Mishra, Mahipal, Poornim, Nimbalkar, H Prakash, Kamalkant, Moti Beena, Kumar, Meenakshi, Kusum Thaakar etc in it.

The by now obscure movie had seven obscure songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Bheeshm Pratigya”(1950) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Manohar Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by S K Pal.

Only the audio of this rare song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this melancholic song.

Song-Dhal gaya aasha ka sooraj (Bheeshm Pratigya)(1950) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Manohar Lal Khanna, MD-S K Pal

Lyrics

Dhal gaya
aa aa
aa aa
aa aa
aasha ka sooraj
dhal gaya

dhal gaya aa aasha ka sooraj
jeewan jyoti bujh gayi ee
bujh gayi ee
bujh gayi ee
aankhon mein aansoo reh gaye
ik jalti nishaani pyaar ki
pyaar ki
dhal gaya aa aasha ka sooraj
dhal gaya

jeewan mein aaya thha basant
ik pal ko
ik kshan ke liye
patjhad phir aisa aa gaya
ik ghor udaasi chhaa gayee

I was aware that today is the birth anniversary of Pran, but I was not aware that today is his 100th birth anniversary !

It was on this day 100 years ago that Pran (12 February 1920 – 12 July 2013) was born.

Pran was born in Lahore and he made his debut in films in Lahore in early 1940s. There, he soon graduated to lead roles. In “Khaandaan”(1942), he had acted opposite Noorjehaan. . After partition, he came to Bombay where he was a nobody and so he had to start from scratch there.

It was in Bombay that Pran began to get the roles of a villain and it waas in these roles that he made his mark. He started his stint in Bombay with “Ziddi”(1948). He played villains but no two roles of his were same. In every movie he brought something new to his acting. And his acting was so convincing that ordinary movie goers dreaded and dipised his roles. Very few people in India named their sons as Pran. That is the kind of impression he had created in the minds of movie goers. 🙂

In 1960s, his dark roles gradually started to become less dark, with doses of kindness and comedy in them and a time came when he became a character artist, beginning from “Upkaar”(1967). The distributors of “Upkaar”(1967) were very nervous, unsure how this new role of Pran would be received by the moviegoers who were so used to see him as a dreaded villain. Fortunately, the movie was a big hit and Praan’s role as Malang Chaacha was loved by moviegoers.

Pran had got to sing very few songs on screen as a villain, but he started to get songs as a character artist. And this process started with “Upkaar”(1967) itself. The song Kasme waade pyaar wafa turned out to be a much loved song, much to the relief of Kalkyanji Anandji, who were dreading that their composition would flop because it was to be picturised on Pran !

Subsequently, Pran has figured in quite a few songs in Hindi movies. And these songs became surprise hits. For instance, “Zanjeer”(1973) song Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi became the most popular song of the year in Binaca geetmala ! “Kasauti”(1974) song, Ham bolega to bologe ki bolta hai was my favourite song durings its time. Same was the case with the song Daru ki bottle me sahab paani bharta hai from “Majboor”(1974).

On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Pran, here is a song from “Zindaadil”(1975). The song is sung by Lata, Shailendra Singh and Mahendra Kapoor. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a get together song. It is lip synced by Rishi Kapoor, Zaahira, Neetu singh and Pran.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. Incidentally, he too shares his birthday with Pran. So we take this opportunity to wish him a happy birthday and many happy returns of the day. Today also happens to be the wedding aniversary of our regular Nitin Shah. We wish him and his better half on this occasion.

Quite a lively and appropriate song for the occasion it is.

आ आ आ आ आ
आ आ आ आ आ

Today’s song is from a comedy musical film – Laadli-49.

During the period 1947 to 1950, there was a spate of comedy and musical films. It was also in this period that Naushad and C Ramchandra played havoc with their music. Films like Bela,Daak Bungla, Do Bhai, Jungle mein mangal, Natak, Shadi se pehle,Shehnai, Gunsundari, Hip Hip Hurray, Khidki, Mera Munna, Suhag raat, Andaz, Badi Behan, barsaat, Ek this ladki, Mahal, Namoona and Patanga stirred the HFM from upside down and then up again !

For all other MDs, this period played a challenge to come up to their highest and best level to compete. MDs like Anil Biswas handled the situation with ease, with his musicals like Laadli and Lajawab. Film Laadli-49 was made by Variety pictures – owned by Anil Biswas and his wife Ashalata (Mehrunnisa Bhagat). It was directed by an old friend of Anil Biswas – J P Advani. However, he directed only 3 films of Anil Biswas – Veena-48, Laadli-49 and Lajawab-50.

Jagatrai Pesumal Advani was born on 17-5-1903 in Hyderabad ( Sindh ). After graduating, he studied film making in Germany in the 1920s. After coming back to India, he joined Mohan Bhavnani – a big gun in those days- as his assistant. His first film as a Director was Heer Ranjha-1931. He shifted to Saroj Movietone in 1934 and then to Karachi to work for Golden Eagle Company. He was considered an expert who could handle the Heroines at his will.

He directed about 30 films, including a Hindi/Punjabi bilingual film Sassi-Punnu-46. His Filmography is- 1931: Heer Ranjha; 1933: Zehar-e-Ishq; 1934: Afghan Abla; Dilara; Gafil Musafir; Johar-e-Shamsheer; Tilasmi Talwar; Vasantsena; Flashing Sword; 1935: Bahar-e- Sulemani; Farebi Duniya; Shah Behram; 1936: Elaan-e-Jung; Shokh Dilruba; Sipahsalaar; 1937: Saqi; Insaaf; 1939: Dekha Jayega; 1940: Dharma Bandhan; Sneh Bandhan; 1941: Shehzadi; 1942: Suhagan; 1943: Sahara; 1946: Sassi Punnu; 1948: Veena; 1949: Laadli; 1950: Wafaa; Lajawaab; 1952: Saloni; 1954: Danka; 1955: Hasina.

The cast of the film was Sulochana Chaterjee, Jairaj, Kuldip Kaur, Ramesh Sinha, Randhir, Narbada Shankar and others. There was a coincidence that 2 Sulochanas acted in this film. Along with Heroine Sulochana Chaterjee, the old timer Sulochana Sr. (Ruby Myers) also acted in a side role. Born in Chandranagar, Sulochana Chatterjee was the daughter of a military man and the family, five girls, including the late Kamla Chatterjee ( she looked like Geeta Bali, and was Kidar Sharma’s wife), and one boy, used to travel along with their parents to wherever their father was transferred.
From Calcutta they moved to Jabalpore and it was here that Sulochana did her schooling. She also took an active part in school dramatics. After some time the family was transferred to Bombay and here her younger sister, Kamla, was spotted by Sohrab Modi, a friend of their father’s, and given a role as a child star in Modi’s picture Jailor (1938).

Once Sulochana happened to visit the sets one day and after watching her sister at work, She was offered a part in Harishchandra Pictures’ “Aina”-44, which she accepted. She was co-starred with Trilok Kapoor. She starred in scores of films after that, among them the comedy “Ladli”-50, in which she appeared with Jairaj, and “Grahasti”-48 which was a memorable hit and in which she played with Yakub and Masood.

Sulochana acted in two Bengali pictures “Apanaela”, produced by Saroj Mukerjee and directed by Benoy Banerjee with Pradeep Kumar as her leading man, and Benoy Banerjee’s “Minoti” in which she shared stellar honors with Smriti Biswas and Paresh Banerjee. Her well known films are Chaitanya Mahaprabhu-53, Rami Dhoban-53, Shahjehan-46, Veena-48, Nav Durga-53, Jagte Raho-56, Jis desh mein Gaqnga behti hai-60, Sarswatichandra-68 etc.

In all she acted in 119 films. Her first film was Shobha-42 and last film was Shabas Daddy-79. After retirement, she settled in Bombay. Sulochana Chatterjee died on 30-8-1999.

Her favorite pastime, was playing with her sister’s children. She cooked, too, and knitted off and on. She was fond of English pictures , liked Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck and comedies. Sulochana could play Badminton and drove a car. A gifted linguist, she knew Bengali, her mother tongue, Hindi, English, Marathi, Punjabi, Kutchi and Guajarati. She spoke them all fluently.

Film Laadli was a comedy musical. There were 5 Lyricists and the MD was Anil Biswas. In Hindi film industry, right from 1931 onwards, many composers from Bengal came to Bombay to try their luck, but only a few could make their name here. There was a host of small time Bangla composers (some of them were Big names in Bengal) came to Bombay for a while, did 2-3 films and went back. Few of them were Shoolpani mukherjee, S P Mukherjee, V V Ganguly, Niren Lahiri, Shivram Ghosh, A C Biswas, Bhishmadev Chatterjee, Sushant Banerjee, Robin Chaterjee, Naresh Bhattacharya etc.

Besides these composers, there were some less successful composers from Bengal, in Bombay, like Ashok Ghosh, Pannalal Ghosh, Robin Banerjee, Hiren Bose, Shyamal Mitra, Arunkumar Mukherjee and Manas Mukherjee. Their major problem was Language and cultural difference.

There were 4 major composers from Bengal, who succeeded here and etched their names in the HFM history. I call them A grade. They all operated at the same time during the Golden Age period. Two composers came from East Bengal-Anil Biswas and S D Burman. Two composers came from West Bengal-Hemant Kumar and Salil Chaudhari.

Anil Biswas was the first major composer from Bengal to start his career in Bombay in 1935, at the age of just 21 years, whereas S D Burman was the oldest having started his career in Bombay in 1946, at the age of 40 years ! The longest tenure was that of Salil Chaudhari, but his song total is the lowest, with an average of about 5 songs per film. This is much lower than the average of 8+ and 9 of the others. This may be, because in later part of his career Salil da gave music to many parallel films which had minimum songs.

The two senior composers were from the East Bengal and the two junior composers were from the West Bengal. The styles of these two groups were different because of the different pattern of Eastern and Western Bangla music. All four depended and used heavily from the folk tunes and Bangla songs, from their respective regions. Anil Biswas and Burman da drew heavily from the Eastern Bangla folk tunes and that is why sometimes their music had similarities.

A case in point is song – “Sundari O sundari” from Lajawab-50. It was based on a folk tune of East Bengal. By coincidence S D Burman too used the same tune and same Mukhda for his Bangla film, “Samar’-50. Not only this,S D Burman again used the same tune for a song in film ‘Munimji”-55 ( Anadi re Anadi).
Anil Biswas was hailed as one of the most original, revolutionary and experimental composer, even dubbed as “The Bhishma Pitamaha”of HFM.

He was original. When Anil Biswas came on the scene in the mid 30s, the Parsee Theatre music,Marathi Natya sangeet and Gujarati drama and Lok kala Sangeet was being followed in film music. He decided to change this pattern and used Robindra Sangeet and Folk tunes for his songs. He was Revolutionary because he introduced western instruments in his music as a routine, which no one had thought of,so far. He was experimental, because he tried a variety of singers.

Those days, when playback was not yet common, non singers sang songs and it was a terrible task to make them sing properly. Anil Biswas tried the First ever playback,in Bombay,in his film “Mahageet”-37,singing the playback song himself to be shot on Hiren Bose in the film.

In a span of 30 years and in his 86 films having 777 songs,he used 76 singers. Among his singers Lata stands at First rank with 120 songs. The second place is shared by Surendra and Meena Kapoor( naturally), with 44 songs. Next name is that of Anil Biswas himself, with 43 songs.

Going through the list of singers, one finds very unknown names like Omkar, Kamlakar, Kokila, Gajadhar, D.Manek, Tarachand, Devaskar, Madhav kale, Yusuf Effendi, Solanki and Swapna Sen. Except Madhav Kale and Yusuf Effendi,I have never heard the other names myself, nor have I read about them anywhere. It is likely that these singers were from the early era and his earliest films. He himself first sang in ‘Dharam ki Devi’-35 and his last song was in ‘Sautela Bhai’-62.

Today’s song is the 6th song of this film to be discussed here. The film had an all time immortal song by the Anil Biswas – Lata duo…”Tumhare bulane ko jee chahata hai….” Such fine songs are now only in memory. Today’s song is also a good song. This is a Chorus song. Anil Biswas was particularly fond of Chorus songs and his no film was complete without at least one chorus song. Now, enjoy this chorus song….

11th february is the remembrance day of Pt Narendra Sharma (28 February 1913 – 11 February 1989) .

Present day HFM lovers have no idea about the contributions of Pt Narendra Sharma if they just go by the wikipedia entry on him. The person writing his wikipedia entry has no clue about Pt Narendra Sharma.

Pt Narendra Sharma was a renowned poet who wrote poetry in Hindi and Urdu. Lata Mangeshkar used to read his poerty and sing them on Radio before she became a playback singer. Here is how she described her association with Pt Narendra Sharma:

“I used to call him ‘Papa’. The first time, I met Papa (Pandit Narendra Sharma) it was at Master Vinayak’s residence. He was accompanied by the eminent litterateur Amritlal Nagar. He asked me to sing for him. During those days, I didn’t need a second invitation to sing. I’d burst into a song whenever I was asked. He was a learned man. I’d spend hours listening to him. In 1968, when I recorded the Bhagavat Gita, Papa came home to congratulate me. I was anxious about my Sanskrit pronunciation. Papa assured me I had done a good job. Papa stayed in Khar. I’d visit his home. My ties with him and his family were very strong. His 3 daughters were my age. I’d carry extra clothes to his home and stay overnight. His daughters and I would do dhamaal all night. His wife though Gujarati, adopted the Uttar Pradesh culture after marriage, because Papa was from UP. I never heard him saying a bad word about anyone. I met Harivanshrai Bachchan Saab at Papa’s place. They called each other ‘Bandhu’. I don’t think I was so close to anyone outside the family. I discussed all my problems with Papa. He called me daughter but always addressed me as ‘Lataji’. I objected to that. But he persisted. When he died of a heart attack, I was heartbroken. No one could take his place.”

He was a lyricist in Hindi movies. HFM is repletre with lyrics containing Urdu words. Pt Narendra Sharma would mostly write songs conttaining Sarskritised Hindi. And he proved that one can write immortal songs in pure Hindi. Take the example of the immortal bhajan from “Bhaabhi Ki Choodiyaan”(1962).

This song, Jyoti kalash chhalke was covered in the blog within a few weeks after this blog was started. There were visitors of this blog who logged on to this blog daily just to listen to this song. There was one grandmom who one day complained that the song has been taken off and that she is no longer able to make her young grand daughter listen to this bhajan- a practice that she was following without fail every morning !

I put on this song every day for my baby grand-daughter…and today it says the video has been removed by the user….could you reinstate it please? It’e been so lovely to hear it…along with the lyrics…I learnt the song from your blogpost!

This song has so many heartwarming comments in the blog. One of these comments is from Mrs Lavanya Shah, the daughter of Pt Narendra Sharma !

How many of us know that Vividh Bharati, the musical channel of Akashwani, was started by Pt Narendra Sharma ! When Government of India decided to have a music channel, Pt Narendra Sharma was hired as Chief Producer to start this project. He conceptualised and executed this project. “Vividh Bharati” , a name that he thought of, started its broadcast on 2 october 1957 from Bombay. The very first song that was played on this brand new Radio station was “Naach Mayura Naach”. It was sung by Manna Dey, penned by Pt Narendra Sharma and composed by Anil Biswas.

Many of the programmes that we still listen to today on Vividh Bharati were stated during those early days and they were the brainchild of Pt Narendra Sharma himself ! For instance “Hawa Mahal” is being broadcast on Vividh Bharati right from its beginning.

A programme for fauzi bhais, called Jaimala was started in Vividh Bharati on evenings in 1962, in the wake of China war. On saturday evening, this programme would be presented by a celebrity. This vishesh jaimala is one of the most popular programmes on Radio.

When Asian games were held in New Delhi in 1982, it was Pt Narendra Sharma who wrote the theme song-“swaagatam suswaagatam”. This song has now become a standard song to be played during official functions, such as Republic day etc.

On the occasion of the remembrance day of this remarkable artist, we pay our tributes to him by covering a song from “Satyam Shivam Sundaram”(1978). This song is sung by Lata and chorus. Pt Narendra Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song, a welcome song, is lipsynced by Zeenat Aman and others.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. For a change for Pt Narendra Sharma, the lyrics of this song contains mostly Urdu words. The song sounds just as sweet as most songs penned by him.

O o o o o o

Suni jo unke aane ki aahat

Aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa aa
Suni jo unke aane ki aahat

Qadam mubaarak hamaare dar pe
Naseeb apnaa jagaayaa hamne
Qadam mubaarak hamaare dar pe
Naseeb apanaa jagaayaa hamne

Huyee hai aamad khushaamadeedam
Huyee hai aamad khushaamadeedam
Ye kehnaa dil ko sikhaayaa hamne
Khile hain aashaa ke phool man mein
Ye raaz unse chhupaayaa hamne
Khile hain aashaa ke phool man mein
Ye raaz unse chhupaayaa hamne

Wo apne netaa ham unki janataa
Wo apne netaa ham unki janataa
Hameshaa naataa nibhaayaa hamne
Ye teri rehmat aye mere maalik
Gumaan nahin thhaa wo paayaa hamne
Ye teri rahamat aye mere maalik
Gumaan nahi thaa wo paayaa hamne

Unhe jo dekhaa jhukaa lin aankhen
Adab se ehsaan uthaayaa hamne
Unhe jo dekhaa jhukaa lin aankhen
Adab se ehsaan uthaayaa hamane

Suni jo unke aane ki aahat
Gareebkhaanaa sajaayaa hamne

ओ ओ ओ ओ ओ ओ
