#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 105# In Remembrance – Kishore Kumar #
—————————————- ——————————————-

Today 13th October’2020 is the thirty-third ‘Remembrance Day’ of the legendary singer Kishore Kumar.
It was on 13th October’1987 that he left this world at the age of fifty-eight only (04.08.1929-13.10.1987) leaving his family, followers and fans shocked, grief-stricken and heart-broken.

On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from ‘1976’ movie ‘Aaj Ka Ghar’.

I was not aware of this movie earlier until I came across this song a few years back. I guess this must be a lesser known or may be even an obscure movie (though it is now available on internet and uploaded three months back (the link which I saw).

‘Aaj Ka Ghar-1976’ was directed by Surendra Shailaj for ‘Shi Adarsh Arts, Bombay’. It was produced by Jaymala. Surendra Sinha was the production controller for of this movie.

It had Jaymala, Shreeram Lagoo, Romesh Sharma, Helen, Lalita Pawar, Baby Mona, Jalal Agha, Madan Puri, I.S. Johar, Chandrashekhar, Ramesh Deo, Master Tito and A.K. Hangal. They were supported by K.K. Purohit, Ilaben, Neelam, Jassu Ben, Jagirdar, Nazmu, Lata Sahni, Chhotu, Vinay, Hansa, Jagmohan Juneja, Mohan Thakur, Duggal, A.U. Khatri and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by B.K. Adarsh whereas the basic idea was by Harin Mehta. Editing of this movie was done by Ravi Patankar. Dialogues and lyrics were written by M.G. Hashmat and revised dialogues were written by Surendra Shailaj (who directed the movie).

Music of this movie was composed by music duo Anil-Arun who composed music for many successful Marathi movies from 1971-1991. Both of them worked independently as well as a ‘team’ for Marathi movies. They also worked as assistants (music arranger) for S.D. Burman and also worked as assistants for may Hindi movies jointly as well as independently.

Anil of Anil Arun is the famous music composer and arranger Anil Mohile whereas Arun Paudwal (spouse of Anuradha Paudwal) was music director. However, as Arun Paudwal passed away in 1991 the pair was broken.

Arun Paudwal also composed music for the ‘1992’ movie ‘Meera Ka Mohan’ which was released after his death. And thereafter Anil Mohile continued to give music to Marathi Movies. He also arranged music for more than hundred programs of Lata Mangeshkar and many Hindi movies too. He passed away on 1st February’2012. Lata Mangeshkar penned a heartfelt condolence on his death as he was very close to the Mangeshkar family.

Coming back to the songs of today’s movie the movie had only three songs-one solo each by Kishore Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal and one duet of Anuradha Paudwal and Adolf.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.12.1976.

Today’s song is a back-ground song sung by Kishore Kumar and written by M.G. Hashmat. Music is composed by Anil-Arun (I guess this the only Hindi movie they jointly composed music for).

They make their debut on the blog with the movie also making its debut on the blog.

In the few initial posts in this series I had presented some background songs sung by Kishore Kumar. I think it would be interesting to compile a list of such background songs he sung in Hindi movies and that gives us an interesting topic for another post in the future.

Secondly when I came back from Kenya after finishing the project there, I had planned that I will surely visit Khandwa on at least two important dates i.e. 4th August and 13th October as the Kishore fans there always have special programs on these dates, however due to the current situation I doubt if the programs would be held there.

Also couple of years back we had heard that the ancestral home of Kishore Kumar in Khandwa is either sold or bought by somebody and it is going to be renovated due to its dilapidated condition. I am not aware of its present status now(or if it has been taken over by the state government as some rumors were there?). But I will always cherish the memories my earlier visits to Khandwa to this place and the Kishore Kumar memorial there on the Khandwa-Indore road.

Remembering the ‘versatile genius’ Abhas Kumar Ganguly – Kishore Kumar today and paying our tributes, let us listen to one of his songs …

I have not watched this movie. But, from the video of the song available it seems that the song gets played in parts in the movie at various situations and twists and turns in the story of the movie.

However, the happy ‘antaraa’ is played in the beginning of the movie (with titles, as I have watched the titles) and is repeated in the end of the movie where we have a ‘happy ending’ 🙂

I hope that you like this song …

Song-Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar (Aaj Ka Ye Ghar)(1976) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-M G Hashmat, MD-Anil Arun
Chorus

Lyrics

(played in background with titles)

Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aa aaj ka ye ghar
Aaj ka ye ghar
aaj ka aa aa ye ghar

Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraake pee gaya
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraake pee gaya
Kaaton se bhi uljha magar
Wo phool ban ke jee gaya
Ho gaya phir safal
Zindagi ka Safar
Dekh lo ik nazar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar

(Lyrics as per video link)

Baar baar aansuon ne bheegoyi nazar
Jaane kyon lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar
Baar baar aansuon ne bheegoyi nazar
Jaane kyon lut gaya aa aaj ka ye ghar
aaj ka aa aa ye ghar

Aaj khushiyon ke chaman mein
Kaisi ye aandhi chali
Aa aa aa aa aa
Aaj khushiyon ke chaman mein
Kaisi ye aandhi chali
Kyon tod di jhonkon ne
Gham ke shaakh se khilti kali
Chal diya baaghbaan bhi
Kali raund kar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar

Aur koi chhod jaata
To na yoon hota gila
Aur koi chhod jaata
To na yoon hota gila
Ae aasmaan ye to bataa
Ye kis khata ki di sazaa
Kyun gaya apna hi dil mera tod kar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar

Baar baar aansuon ne bhigoyi nazar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar

meri mamtaa ki nishaani ee
bin mitaaye mit gayi
meri mamtaa ki nishaani ee
bin mitaaye mit gayi
ik deep ki thhi raushni
kyon bin bujhaaye bujh gayi ee
naa wo geet (?)
naa wo geet
naa wo dhun
naa wo swar
Jaane kyun lut gaya aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa aa ye ghar

Aa aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa
Aa aa aa aa aa

Gardishon mein waqt ki hain
Zindagi ke kaafile ae ae
Aa aa aa aa aa
Gardishon mein waqt ki hain
Zindagi ke kaafile
Dil se lagaaya kal jinhen
Hain aaj unse faasle
Chha gaya andhkaar
Ab main jaaun kidhar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar

zindagi ki kashmakash se
toot kar jaaun kahaan
main chhoot kar is qaid se
jaaun bhi to jaaun kahaan
sholaa ban jal uthhi ee
meri shaam o sahar
Jaane kyun lut gaya
Aaj ka aa ye ghar
Aaj ka aa ye ghar

Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraa ke pee gaya
Aansuon ka zehar jo bhi
Muskuraa ke pee gaya
Kaanton se bhi uljha magar
Wo phool ban ke jee gaya
Ho gaya phir safal
Zindagi ka Safar
Dekh lo ik nazar
Aaj ka ye ghar
Aaj ka ye ghar

– नमस्कार सर जी , जय श्री कृष्ण,
अविनाश बोल रहा हूँ,

– बोलिए बोलिए अविनाश भाई,

– कैसे हैं सर आप

– मुझे क्या हुआ है ?

That is our respected Bharat Bhai. I spoke to him last in this March. Just a courtesy call. But whenever I spoke to him, he was always energetic, full of life and cheerful. . .

I used to call him occasionally, in between particularly after meeting him first time in November 2016 during the Mumbai gang-out. Thereafter the second meeting happened in April 2018 at Surat when Arun ji, Sadanand ji and Bharat Bhai came to meet Harish Raghuvanshi ji at his place.

But today, on 16th May we got this sad news of his demise on 8th of this month.

We all pray to god to rest his soul in peace!!!

Our heartfelt condolences and tributes to him!!!

This song which could have been a part of his series ‘Sureeli Suman’ which I had shared to him and requested a post, but it could not happen somehow, may be because of his health issues. . .

After coming back from Kenya to India I was eager to visit Mumbai and meet him but it could not happen.

On 19th March I called him to greet him on his birthday and also to seek his blessings, as I always used to do while ending the conversation.

We will miss you Sir!!!

The warmth, the love you showered in every meeting and whenever I spoke to you will always remain in memory – the musical meetings, your smiling face and your lovable presence around us will always be missed.

प्रणाम सर जी !

Song – Ummeedon Se Keh Do Ke Na Aansoo Bahaayen (Jwaalamukhi) (UR) (1950s)(1959) Singer – Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Dukhi Amritsari, MD – Devraj

Lyrics

ummeedon se keh do
ke na aansoo bahaayein
rone ko ab to aa gayi hain
kaali ghataayein
ummeedon se keh do

keh do ke ab na machlen
seene mein nafratein
seene mein nafratein
keh do ke ab na tadpen
haaye
dil ki hasratein
haaye
dil ki hasratein
duniya ki nigaahon mein
kahin ham na aa jaayen
rone ko to aa gayi hain
kaali ghataayein
ummeedon se keh do

keh do ke looti duniya meri
aa ke yahin par
aa ke yahin par
keh do ke padi maut hain
chaahat ki zameen par
hai kaun wo apni
jo is arthhi ko uthhaaye
rone ko ab to aa gayi hain
kaali ghataayein
ummeedon se keh do

keh do meri duniya ko
kyun barbaad kiya hai
kyun barbaad kiya hai
keh do meri khushiyon ko
kyun nashaad kiya hain
kyun nashaad kiya hain
haalat ko meri dekh ke
na nain bhar aayen
rone ko ab to aa gayi hain
kaali ghataayein
ummeedon se keh do

Devnagri Script lyrics (Provided by Avinash Scrapwala)

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 31
——————————————————————————————

Aah, the heady days of a decade before. Posting six songs was quite the norm. On 11th May, the following films got represented on the blog.

Mashaal

1950
Hamraaz 1967
Aankhen 1968
Parichay 1972
Ghar 1978
Nikaah

1982

Believe it or not, except for ‘Ghar’, all the remaining films made their debut on the blog that day. As I check the record of the films over the intervening years, five of the films have completed their tenure, and all their songs are now showcased here. Just one of these films has not yet been yippeee’d. And that is ‘Nikaah’ from 1982.

When ‘Nikaah’ hit the theatres in 1982, it did create a popular flutter. The doe eyed Salma Agha caught the fancy of the audiences early on. For a brief time, she was quite a rage. Then, the second quality of this film, that drew crowds and appreciation, was the music and the songs. Practically all the songs were hits, and have enjoyed lasting popularity and appeal.

The film has six songs, and four of them have already occupied their places on the blog. Browsing the list, one is once again struck with wonderment and praise, for the songs are –

Beete Huye Lamhon Ki Kasak Saath To Hogi
Dil Ke Armaan Aansuon Mein Beh Gaye
Fazaa Bhi Hai Jawaan Jawaan
Dil Ki Ye Aarzoo Thhi Koi Dilruba Miley

Fabulous songs, each one of them. Now about the remaining songs of this film. There is one qawwaali song, which is more or less incidental in the film. It is the other remaining song that is notable, unique and having its own claim to fame.

Ghulam Ali does not need any introduction to the readers. This phenomenal singer, was quite a rage in India during the 1980s and 90s. Even today, his performances are enthralling and much awaited. It is quite sad that his performance trips to India have become a victim of politics.

When this film was released, it was acknowledged that BR Chopra had accomplished almost a coup, in being successful to have a song, a ghazal actually, sung by this popular and legendary singer, included in the film. I am not sure, but perhaps this is the only instance of Ghulam Ali’s voice being a part of a Hindi film.
[Ed Note: Based on the inputs received from Anekant ji and Sadanand ji, in the comments section below – certainly this song is not the only instance of Ghulam Ali singing for Hindi films. Thanks to both for this important update. 🙂 ]

And so, as I was checking the details, I was quite taken by surprise that this song is not yet posted here on our blog. Well, today, it comes on board.

For its times, this film was a bold statement addressing social issues relating to marriage and divorce in the Muslim community. The predicament of the lady getting a raw deal in life at the hands of a whimsical male partner, whose bizarre behavior and fanciful decisions are quite supported by the norms of the society, completely unmindful of the traumatizing consequences on the mind and the psyche of the lady – and all that, for no fault of hers.

This famous ghazal, which has been one of the all time favorites outside of the film domain, is penned by Maulaana Hasrat Mohaani.
[Ed Note: Sadanand ji further informs us that this ghazal as a non-filmi creation, is also sung by Jagjit Singh for the the TV Serial ‘Kahkashaan’ (1992) produced by Ali Sardar Jaffrey. That version is already posted on our blog at “Chupke Chupke Raat Din. . .“, by Sadanand ji himself. That post also includes a detailed bio-sketch of the poet, Maulaana Hasrat Mohaani – a very interesting read. Thanks Sadanand ji.]

The music composition is by Ghulam Ali himself. The complete ghazal is of course much longer, and there are various variations in different live performances and other recordings. In the film, only two she’rs are included. There are versions of this ghazal as being in the film, which are apparently longer with more couplets, but those are the handiwork of technology only. Some folks have uploaded longer versions, which are copy-paste extensions of the visual clips, overlaid with additional audio, giving an impression of a longer song in the film. But watching with little attention, one can make out that it is a fake.

On screen, this rendition is performed by the gramophone player. Deepak Prashar, having dismissed and divorced his wife, Salma Agha, is having bouts of depressive regrets, and he misses her. If I recall rightly, it is his birthday celebration, and he invites Salma. In this clip it is cake that we encounter first. Then we see a weepy Deepak listening to this ghazal, as it plays on a gramophone in the room. Salma makes an entry, unnoticed by Deepak, and she witnesses the pain of loss and regret that Deepak is exhibiting. Rest, as part of the story, to be discussed another time.

A salute to this legendary singer from across the border, who has a very solid grounding and training in the Hindustani classical music. And this post brings this popular film to being one short of having all its songs posted here. So the yippee-dom announcement should not be too far off now. 🙂

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Carl Sagan, in his book, ‘Pale Blue Dot’ talks about the picture taken by Voyager I before it left the solar system. Planet Earth, the only home we have known so far appears less than a fraction of a pixel in the picture. It’s on this speck of dust like object in the vast cosmos lived every human, plant and animal we ever know and every civilization.

On this planet the greatest men in a wide variety of fields have left behind their legacies both good and bad. Their lives however great or condemnable have been spent here.  In the vastness of time and space, a few years spent by great men may mean nothing. However, the legacy left behind by such men are recognized and appreciated for generations.

Theatre and entertainment arenas have also seen many a great men and women contribute their art and expertise to mankind. Quite a few are well known and many others are often not credited to the extent to which they should be.

Narrowing down to a movie and further restricting ourselves to Hindi film and non-film songs, the essence of this blog, we are now at the doorsteps of 15 thousand representations.

By these 15k representations, we all have tried to contribute our little efforts in bringing to the fore, the works of film artists – popular, less known and unknown. Amongst the main contributors, the nearly impossible tasks are taken up more experienced and knowledgeable such as Arunkumar ji, Sudhir ji, Sadanand ji etc.  The painstaking efforts in collecting accurate information from various sources and contacts and posting in a concise manner is definitely not an easy task.

Then, there are specialists such as Nalini ji for reminding us of the artist’s anniversaries and Prakash ji for identifying lesser known actors on the screen. Raja ji, whose marathon posts never bore us and we have Avinash ji who pours his heart out in the posts. We have Bharat ji with his expertise and first-hand experience.

There have many others who were more contended with sending only lyrics and a few who keep giving home-works to others. 🙂 A few are more than happy to suggest corrections to the posts and lyrics etc. in the comments section. Then, there are also contributors who vanish for a while and re-appear for special occasions (pun about self intended). 🙂

And, finally we have Atul ji, the fulcrum of our activities and the force that binds us together. Atul ji marches along from one milestone to another. And when he reaches the next milestone, we are all automatically teleported there. 🙂

I never planned for any special song for this occasion. (That again, the leaders will have a plan). But seeing that a great gem of an even greater singer is yet to be posted, I decided to go for his solo.

The singer is Talat Mahmood, of whom quite a lot has already been written on the blog.

My father, an avid fan Talat saab often says that his voice is for royal people. By royal, he means to say people with special taste and I can’t agree with him more. Talat Saab’s melancholic songs sung in blue mood are a class apart, the likes of which one will never get to hear from any other singer.

There are several such songs of Talat Saab which one can hear multiple times and can only admire the grace and dignity in his voice for songs pertaining to even dejection.

The list seems to be endless, but it’s a fact that he sang quite fewer songs compared to his other well-known contemporaries. However, Talat Saab’s voice will always be the triumph of quality over quantity.

The present song which I had not heard in the recent past is also amongst my many favourites of Talat Mahmood. There are stars and the moon in the song in case people are wondering what Carl Sagan had to do with this song in the first place. 🙂 (Kya karein, some starting problems in writing this post)

I pray for the continued longevity on the blog, active participation of all the contributors and readers as well.

Hearty Congratulations to one and all on this great achievement.

Blog Day : 3843 Post No. : 14854

Today’s song is from film ‘Bhedi Bangla’ (1949). This film was produced by Anand Subramanyam, under the banner of Jagriti films, owned by Master Bhagwan. The story, dialogues and songs were by Ehsaan Rizvi and music was by P Ramakant. This was a name used by C Ramchandra, because he was under contract with Filmistan and could not give music in his own name. It started with Raja Nene’s film Shadi Se Pehle’ in 1947, in which he first used his assistant’s name Paingankar (the joint MD was Karnad). His name was Ramakant Paingankar and was assisting Chitalkar for a long time. Later, for Bhagwan’s films like ‘Bhedi Bangla’, ‘Bhole Bhale’ (1949), ‘Babuji’ (1950), and ‘Bakshish’ (1950) also, Chitalkar used the pseudo name P Ramakant as MD (information from Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar).

Master Bhagwan was a very hard working person. In the real sense, he brought in the wave of stunt films in the late 40s. After the films of Master Vithal and Fearless Nadia waned in their popularity by 1944-45, it was Master Bhagwan, who established his own Production house – Jagriti Films, and produced several stunt films. He had a set of actors and actresses, which included Baburao Pehelwan, Vasantrao Pehelwan, Azeembhai, Shanta Patel, Chanchal, Leela Gupte, Usha Shukla and Vitha Lokare.

The storyline for most of his films was also fixed. Two young vagabonds – Baburao Pehelwan and Bhagwan, come to Bombay in search of employment. One Sethji (Azeembhai) appoints them to protect him from the local criminal (Vasantrao Pehelwan). Sethji has a good looking daughter (one of the stock Heroines), who has a maid (another girl from the stock). Baburao loves Seth ji’s daughter and Bhagwan loves the maid. After lot many stunts and fighting scenes, the end would be happy. The same story with changed names and other minor changes was used in almost all his films like ‘Badla’, ‘Bahadur’, ‘Jalan’, ‘Madadgaar’, ‘Dosti’, ‘Shake Hand’, ‘Matlabi’, ‘Bach Ke Rehna’, ‘Bhole Bhale’, ‘Jeete Raho’ or such other films. The audience did not mind . They were happy with the stunts. (Did Nasir Hussain get inspiration from Bhagwan in this matter ?)

Master Bhagwan entered the film world with silent film ‘Bewafa Ashiq’ (1930). His first talkie film was ‘Himmat-e-Marda’ (1934). Initially, like all other heroes, even Bhagwan used to sing his own songs. Once he had gone to Columbia company for rehearsal and recording a song. While entering, he saw a young man sitting under a tree and writing something. After rehearsal, he saw that fellow again and even after recording the man was still writing something. Bhagwan went to him and asked with curiosity what was he writing. The man answered, I am writing songs and stories. He came to know that his name was Ehsaan Rizvi and that he too lives in Dadar like Bhagwan. He took Rizvi’s address and left.

In 1938, Bhagwan got his first film as a director- ‘Bahadur Kisaan’ (1938). He called Ehsan Rizvi and gave him the job of writing the story, dialogues and songs. From that day Ehsaan Rizvi became a part of his team. He wrote for at least 25 films of Bhagwan’s. Born in 1914, Rizvi wrote lyrics for 60 films, but most of them were B or C grade films. He however wrote dialogues and screenplay for some well known films like ‘Do Ustad’ (1959), ‘Mughal e Azam’ (1960), ‘Woh Kaun Thi’ (1964), ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ (1971), ‘Gopichand Jasoos’ (1982) etc. He had shared the Filmfare award for dialogues of ‘Mughal e Azam’, with 3 other writers. He died on 16-1-1983.

Bhagwan and CR got introduced when Bhagwan was directing film ‘Bahadur Kisaan’ for producer Chandrarao Kadam. The MD was Meer Saheb and CR was his assistant. Of course, that time he was just Ram Chitalkar. Their friendship lasted for many more years. For film ‘Bahadur Kisaan’, the background music was composed by Naushad, CR and Sajjad Hussain. Naushad played piano, CR played organ and Sajjad played mandolin. Another person Prem, played clarinet. They were all struggling artistes then.

In 1942 Bhagwan directed ‘Sukhi Jeevan’, for which CR was the MD for the first time. Bhagwan and the producer Harishchandra Rao Kadam had some dispute on payments. Bhagwan decided to start his own production company and he started Jagriti Pictures. His first film was ‘Badla’ (1943). For this film he took 80,000 from a financier, with a condition of repaying one lakh rupees after the film is released. After this film Bhagwan churned out film after film in the stunt genre. In 1949, Bhagwan made film ‘Bhedi Bangla’, which was the first of its kind – a sort of horror cum mystery film. The film was a hit film. With this film Bhagwan had reached the zenith of his stunt films.

In this film, there were several scenes, where Bhagwan sees a ghost and his eyes widen and breath is held up. Due to the strain on the eyes, they became red and swollen and after some time, suddenly, he could not see anything. He thought that he has become blind. He shouted for his brother Shanker. Bhagwan was immediately taken to a hospital in Girgaon. The doctor examined him, gave him an injection and some tablets. That night he slept like a dead man, but after getting up on next day noon, he was happy that his eyesight was normal now.

Bhagwan had noticed that whenever his film’s trial show was arranged, a handsome young man would be present there. When he saw this man at the trial show of ‘Bhedi Bangla’ again, he inquired as to who he was. The young man told him that his name was Raj Kapoor and he was son of the great Prithviraj Kapoor. Bhagwan called him and asked him why he came. Raj kapoor said, “Sir, I like your stunt films. I am your fan. In my films, I copy your dance style. Why don’t you make a social film ?”. Few days later, even CR also pushed him hard to enter the social film genre now, so that CR can openly lend his name to Bhagwan’s films as MD and his film will get the benefit of his fame. Thereafter Bhagwan started thinking about it seriously and then ‘Albela’ happened. The rest is history, as they say! The story of Albela making, some other time. . .

The story of film Bhedi Bangla was,

Shyam (Baburao Pehelwan) and Manglu (Bhagwan) are friends and good for nothing. They come to Bombay to look for easy money. They pretend to be lame and blind and start begging. However, after few days, their secret is out and and the enraged public of Bombay gives them a sound thrashing. An onlooker calls them and asks if they would do a good job, instead of this nonsense. The agree and they are appointed as watchmen for a deserted haveli. It is owned by a Sethani (Tarabai – elder sister of Sitara Devi and mother of dancer Gopi Krishna). Her daughter is beautiful Prema (Leela Gupte). There is an estate manager also (Azeembhai – who later became a famous fight master in Hindi films), who does not like their coming there.

One day the friends find the dead body of the haveli’s maali (gardener) (Inamdar) in the premises of the haveli. The estate manager complains to the police. Police start investigations. Maali had a good looking daughter – Champa (Usha Shukla). While Manglu tries to take care of her, the estate manager tells police that he suspects this duo of murdering the maali. In absence of any proof, police do not arrest them but keep an eye on them.

Suddenly, the friends start seeing ghosts in the haveli. First few days, they are scared, but realise that this is all bogus and they try to reach the bottom of the matter. Finally, they unearth a plan of the estate manager to scare everybody, so that no one will remain there and he can conduct his gold smuggling business from there. He only has murdered the maali. After solid stunts and fighting scenes, the culprits are arrested and Shyam and Prema and Manglu and Champa are united. (658).

The film had 8 songs. Most songs are available on You Tube. 4 songs are already discussed here. Today’s song is the 5th song. It is a duet of Lata and Chitalkar. All in all, ‘Bhedi Bangla’ aka ‘The House of Mystery’ was a ‘paisa vasool‘ entertainment.

kali kali khilaati hai
usi chaman mein raen andhere
shabnam neer bahaati hai
usi chaman mein raen andhere
shabnam neer bahaati hai
tum kehte ho is jag mein
bas hansna aur hasaana
kaanton bhari ye raah se hai
muskuraate jaana
aansoo na bahaana
ab aansoo na bahaana
kaanton bhari ye raah se hai
muskuraate jaana

sukh mein to hansti hai duniya
sabka yehi haal hai
sukh mein to hansti hai duniya
sabka yehi haal hai
lekin dukh utha kar koi
hanse to phir ye kamaal hai
lekin dukh utha kar koi
hanse to phir ye kamaal hai
jag ki reet badal kar dekho
dukh ko bhi sukh banaana
kaanton bhari ye raah se hai
muskuraate jaana
aansoo na bahaana
ab aansoo na bahaana
kaanton bhari ye raah se hai
muskuraate jaana

sach poocho do dil ka milna
kaanta bhi hai phool bhi
pyaar ko sach maano to sach hai
bhool kaho to bhool bhi
sach poocho do dil ka milna
kaanta bhi hai phool bhi
pyaar ko sach maano to sach hai
bhool kaho to bhool bhi
lekin dil mein himmat ho to
khud badlega zamaana
kaanton bhari ye raah se hai
muskuraate jaana

Blog Day : 3812 Post No. : 14810

Today, the December 25, 2018 is the Remembrance Day of music Director, Eric Roberts akka Vinod (22/05/1922 – 25/12/1959) who left for the heavenly abode on this day of 1959 at a prime age of 37. Vinod has been one of my favourite music directors who mostly followed the ‘Punjabi Ang’ of music, introduced in Hindi films by Pandit Amarnath. He composed top class melodies in Hindi and Punjabi films. His musical career started with ‘Khamosh Nighaaen’ (1946) and composed music for 28 Hindi films till his death in 1959.

Vinod came into prominence in his filmy musical career with his excellent song compositions in ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949). One of songs from this film laara lappa laara lappa laai rakhdaa became very popular. Both Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar sang for Vinod for the first time in this film. Despite this success, he had to share music direction in a few subsequent films with other music directors. Most of such films failed at the box office despite his good music. With this kind of his filmy career, he joined the list of talented music directors who could not sustain their successes to reach in the top bracket of the music directors.

In 1949, music director Shankar-Jaikishan made a successful debut in ‘Barsaat’ (1949). S D Burman had his first major success as a music director in ‘Shabnam’ (1949). Both these music directors consolidated their positions in the Hindi film industry after their first success. One of the main reasons for their long successful careers, in my view, was that both of them were selective in choosing the films, that too from the top banners. As against these, Vinod, after the success of ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), continued to be mostly associated with ‘B’ grade film banners. Though a few of such films were moderately successful, it was not enough to attract attention from the top banners. In Hindi film industry, if one gets branded as a music director of ‘B’ grade films, it is very difficult to get entry into the top banners.

A few select songs among others composed by Viond are listed below as my favourite:

Song Singer(s) Movie (year)
badla nazar aata hai Satish Batra-Premlata ‘Taara’ (1949)
ye shokh sitaare Lata-Rafi ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949)
taare wohi hain chaand wohi hai Lata ‘Anmol Ratan’ (1950)
kaaga re jaa re jaa re Lata ‘Wafa’ (1950)
nighaahon ko jab aa gayaa musukuraana Sulochana Kadam ‘For Ladies Only’ (1951)
mere barbaadiyon per muskuraane aa gaya koi Lata ‘Sabzbaagh’ (1951)
chupke se na jaa o man ke raaja Asha Bhonsle ‘Aag Ka Dariya’ (1953)
mere dil jhoom zara S Balbir ‘Mumtaz Mahal’ (1957)

Among the male playback singers, who sang for Vinod, Mohammed Rafi topped the list with 33 songs. Among the female playback singers singing for him, Asha Bhonsle took the honour of singing the maximum songs (82).

As a tribute to music director, Vinod, I have selected one of my favourite songs ‘ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do’ rendered by Asha Bhonsle for the film ‘For Ladies Only’ (1951). The film seems to have got delayed as I remember to have seen an advertisement of this film in an old film magazine of 1949 as ‘Titlee’. Probably, at the time of the censor certification, the name of the film was changed to ‘For Ladies Only’. The film was directed by Vedi. The star cast included Kuldeep Kaur, Kamal Mehra, Satish, Sadhana Bose, Rupa Verman etc.

There were 8 songs in the film with 6 lyricists and 8 playback singers. The song under discussion was written in a ghazal format by ‘Sharma’ which I presume to be Buta Ram Sharma. Narendra Sharma never wrote ghazals for the films and Kidar Sharma rarely wrote lyrics for other banners.

Song-Ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do (For Ladies Only)(1951) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Butaram Sharma, MD-Vinod

Lyrics

ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do
ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do
ulfat ko phir hai kiska sahaara jawaab do
ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do

bulbul chaman ko chhod bayabaan jaa rahe
bayabaan mein jaa rahen
kaise karoge tum ye gawaara jawaab do
ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do

jinse thhi zindagi wo hi jab gair ho chale
jab gair ho chale
phir aur kaun hoga hamaara jawaab do
ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do

dil ro raha hai apni tasalli ke vaaste
tasalli ke vaaste
jaaye kahaan ye dard ka maara jawaab do
ashqon ka gar hai maut kinaara jawaab do

“Aaina”(1944) was directed by S M Yusuf for D R D Productions. This movie had Trilok Kapoor, Husn Bano, Kaushlya, Yakub, Gope, Yashodhara Katju, Rajkumari Shukla, Sulochana Chatterji, Mirza Musharraf, Leela Mishra, Sayyad Ahmad, Bibi, Sultan Bawa etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it that were composed by two music directors viz Fatah Ali Khan and Gulshan Soofi. HFGK mentions three songs as composed by Fateh Ali Khan and two songs as composed by Gulshan Soofi. Music directors for three remaining songs are not known.

Five songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth song from “Aaina”(1944). This song is sung by Shama. Tanveer Naqvi is the lyricist of this song. Music director for this song is not known. I have provisionally considered Gulshan Soofi to be the composer of this song.

I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Song-Aansoo na bahaana (Aaina)(1944) Singer-Shama, Lyrics-Tanveer Naqvi, MD-Gulshan Soofi

Lyrics

aansu na bahaana
aankhon
aansu na bahaana
ye raaz hai dil ke

unhen ro kar na ganwaana
ro kar na ganawaana
aansu na bahaana

tumse mili shikwa aa
taqdeer hamaari ee ee ee
tum jeet gayi ho o o
kismat hai tumhaari
ae dil

hum pe na tadapna
ae dil na tadapna
hum pe na tadapna
wo khud hi chale aayen
wo khud hi chale aayen
asar apna dikhaana
asar apna dikhaana
aansu na bahaana
ye raaz hain dil ke
ye raaz hain dil ke
dil hi mein chhupaana
aansu na bahaana
aankhon
