(A tribute to Ramesh Deo)
Today(30 January 2023) we introduce the movie “Hum Junglee Hain” from the year ‘1973’ on the blog.
Today 30th January’2023 is the ninety-seventh birth anniversary of yesteryears’ film actor Ramesh Deo.
He was born on 30th January’1926. If he would have been alive today he would have turned ninety-six today. He passed away last year on 2nd February’2022.
In his long career in Hindi and Marathi film industry he acted in many movies, and also in Marathi Stage Plays.
We have fond memories of his roles like Dr Kulkarni in ‘Anand’ and many other character roles and especially the negative roles he played in the Hindi movies.
I am not going into the details of his filmography in this post. Our Respected Shri Sudhir ji had done a detailed post on Ramesh Deo last year which I would like every ‘movie-buff’ should read. This post can be read here.
Ramesh Deo was a part of many movies of the ‘seventies’ when we were growing watching ‘Hindi movies’. He had a played a role in today’s movie, where I guess his role was of a ‘second lead’ in this movie. I have never watched this movie till now and I was not aware about its song till the preparation of this post. Though, I am yet to listen to the other songs from this movie. I had come across this song about a month back and since then I was holding it for presenting it on this occasion today.
On screen it is Ramesh Deo performing on this beautiful song with Vijaya Shree.
Here is a brief about the today’s movie.
“Hum Junglee Hain” was directed by P. Subramaniyam for ‘Rani Productions, Madras’.
This movie was produced by V.C. Jain and G.C. Lalwan.
The cast of this movie included Kiran Kumar, Manish, Sapru, Paintal, Birbal, Aparna Choudhury, Kavish, Shanti, Viraj, Brahmachari, Santosh Kumar, Annamma and others, with Ramesh Deo and Vijaya Shree.
Anand and Cho were introduced in this movie.
This movie was written by C.L. Kavish. Story of this movie was by P. Subramaniyam who also directed this movie.
Hrishikesh Mukherjee had done the supervision for editing of this movie. Editing was done by Gopalakrishnan and Babu.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.11.1973.
As the title of this movie suggests it is based on a story involving ‘Jungle’ and the ‘animal’ there. Even there is a song in this movie ‘haathhi ke daant le lo’…
The titles of this movie mention that this movie has been shot in the ‘Jungles’ of ‘Kerala’.
This movie has seven sound tracks including six songs. All the songs for this movie were written by Vedpal Verma who also composed the songs of this movie.
Background music for this movie was composed by Pugazendi.
Here is the detail of songs in this movie :-
SNo | Song Title | Singer/s |
---|---|---|
01 | Jab se dekha hai tumko | Mohd Rafi, Usha Mangeshkar |
02 | Laa laa …main mehndi rachaaungi | Asha Bhonsle |
03 | Haathhi ke daant le lo | P. B. Shrinivas, L.R. Eswari |
04 | Baaton baaton mein mere dil ko… | Mohd Rafi, Usha Mangeshkar |
05 | Khilaa re … chaand khilaa taare khile | Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Mangeshkar, chorus |
06 | Laa laa … naa mehndi rachaa saki | Asha Bhonsle |
07 | Dance Music | — |
The titles of this movie mentioned Asha Bhonsle, Mohammad Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, P.B. Srinivas, and L.R. Eswari as playback singers for this movie.
That means the titles of this movie does not mention the name of Usha Mangeshkar as playback singer for this movie.
However HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) gives credit to Usha Mangeshkar for three songs in this movie. Today’s song is one of them.
The audio-video links of the today’s song and HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mention Mohd Rafi and Usha Mangeshkar as singers for the today’s song.
As mentioned above on screen it is Ramesh Deo and Vijaya Shree performing on this song. I think this song is a nice song and it should be a better-known song. But I do not remember to have heard it even on radio over these years.
With today’s song this movie ‘Hum Junglee Hain-1973’ makes its debut on the blog today.
Let us remember Ramesh Deo and pay him our tributes today and listen to this song picturised on him.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 98#
——————————————-
Today 24th July 2020 is the eighty-third birth anniversary of actor, producer, director, writer and lyricist Manoj Kumar. He was born as Harikishan Giri Goswami on 24th July 1937 in Abbottabad (then in North-West frontier province of British India and now in Pakistan).
On this occasion here is a song from the ‘1977’ movie ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’.
My discussion on ‘songs of seventies that brings back memories’ and songs those are purely ‘nostalgic’ for me is incomplete unless I discuss this song here on the blog. I was longing to see this song on the blog ever since I start as a ‘lyrics contributor’ to this blog.
In my growing years this song ‘Shirdi waale Sai baba aaya tere dar pe sawaali’ qas a hugely poppular song. There were other Sai Baba related songs too that were frequently heard on loudspeakers and on radio. This song from ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ and today’s song from ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ came in the same year i.e. ‘1977’.
(The above song from ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ has already been posted on the blog.)
Both songs have the voice of Rafi Saab and his singing made both these songs more divine and soulful.
‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ was directed by Ashok Bhushan for ‘Sai Shyam Movies’. It was presented by Manoj Kumar and Sai devotees. And the movie was produced by ‘Sarla Charities Trust’.
Pandurang Dixit was the was co-director and production controller of this movie.
Anil Ahuja and Diwan Arora were the chief assistant directors of this movie.
It had Sudheer Dalavi as ‘Sai Baba’, with Manmohan Krishna, Shrikant Moghe, Raj Mehra, B.M. Vyas, Birbal, Preetam Beli, Chanda, Vatsala Deshkmukh, Ratnamala, Suman Dharmadhikari, Jyotsana Kirpekar, Bhavna, Nazeer Kashmiri, C.S. Dubey, Master Titu, Master Raju. It also had Usha Chavan, ‘Laxman’ Chawla, Kumari Mahalaxami and Sai devotees in special appearance. And also making special appearance in the movie were Rajendra Kumar, Prem Nath, Hema Malini, Shagtrughan Sinha and Manoj Kumar, Madan Puri, Sachin, Kishan Dhawan, Paintal, Dheeraj, Satish, Kuljeet.
This movie was based on Govindrao Dabholkar’s ‘Sri Sai Satcharitra’ and experiences of devotees of Saibaba. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Manoj Kumar.
Dev Kishan wrote the story of this movie and was also the associate writer of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by V. V. Kamat. Audiography for this movie was done by Raghuvir Date while art direction was done by Kanu Desai. Special effects were by Dahyabhai.
This movie had nine songs in it written by Manoj Kumar, Pandurang Dixit and Dev Kishan. Music for this movie was composed by Pandurang Dixit. Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Jani Babu, Anoop Jalota, Anuradha and Dilraj Kaur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.02.1977.
I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my younger brothers and cousins at Akola then. Also, I think the movie was given a ‘tax free’ status then.
Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and Usha Mangeshkar and on the screen, it is lip synced by Shatrughan Sinha and Master Titu respectively. Also seen in the picturization of the song are Sudheer Dalavi and many others.
Music for this song is composed by Pandurang Dixit.
And lyrics of this song are written by the versatile Manoj Kumar. As a ‘lyricist’ he makes a debut on the blog today.
He has written lyrics for the songs in few other movies viz.’Kranti-1981’,’Kalaakaar-1983’, ‘Painter Babu-1983’, ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan-1987’, ‘Clerk-1989’, ‘Santosh-1989’ etc. The list of songs written by him needs to be compiled and authenticated for presentation in details which we can do in future posts coming on the blog.
For ‘movie-goers’ and ‘movie-watchers’😊 who grow in the seventies the movies of Manoj Kumar always have a ‘special place’ and part of our ‘nostalgia’ of those beautiful years. And yes, we are going to have more write-ups on him coming on the blog in future. 😊
Today on his birth anniversary we wish Manoj Kumar a ‘very happy birthday’ and a healthy and peaceful life ahead …
Let us now listen to today’s beautiful song … I like this song very much and hope you will like it too. …

With humble beginnings as a child ‘extra’, way back in 1951, the story of Jagdeep’s career is an interesting discourse. He made his debut appearance as an extra child actor in BR Chopra’s ‘Afsaana’ (1951). His comic propensities became visible in another small role as a child actor in Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Beegha Zameen’. Then on to more noticeable child roles – ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953), the younger Kaif, playing the child version of Shammi Kapoor; ‘Footpath’ (1953), a young street smart pickpocket; the role of Elaichi in Guru Dutt’s ‘Aar Paar’ (1954); the child clown in ‘Munna’ (1954); the young Kishore Kumar in ‘Dhobi Doctor’ (1954); and ‘Railway Platform’ (1955), ‘Mr & Mrs 55’ (1955), ‘Kismet Ke Khel’ (1956), ‘Dhaake Ki Malmal’ (1956), and more. Then comes 1957 and two important films – ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’. Still the child actor, but gaining recognition with every role. The child actors’ team in ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’ was recognized and awarded by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru.

We are now nearing the end of the decade. The selections continue to prosper. A good share of duets of 1979 are already posted here. And the selection of singing partners continues to be very varied. Besides Lata ji and Asha ji, other names are Hemlata, Anuradha Paudwal, Savita Suman, Usha Khanna etc. This duet, released during 1979, is sung along with Usha Mangeshkar.

In the late 60s, there was a time when I would watch one Hindi film almost every week-end in the theatre. The one aspect of the films which used to irritate me at that time was actors suddenly going into singing mode thus interrupting, like a speed breaker on the highway, the smooth flow of the narration. Some people would even walk out of the theatre as soon as the song started on the screen and come back only after the end of the song. Of course the audience would not do that when a song is melodious and well picturised.
