Music is an irresistible thing. It energizes the soul and is a great stress buster. Indian film music especially is very enchanting and melodious to listen.

Years back, during the age of black and white movies, there was not much variety in music. If you listen to old Hindi songs, you will find almost the same beats. The music was simple, yet it was very melodious. Singers like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Lata and Asha were simply outstanding and still their magic is alive.

Although the times have changed and so is the pattern of music. There are varieties of music such as pop, rock, jazz and many more. But still if you compare a new old Hindi song (from 70s and 80s) with any of the latest ones, you will of course find a huge difference. New Old Hindi songs, though outdated, are still most demanded by the people.

The greatest appeal of the 70s is that it combines the simple and casual comfort of pop culture with the elaborate razzmatazz of disco combined with the introduction of electronic instruments and melodious compositions.

The new old retro music of 70s and 80s has done wonders in the Hindi film Industry in those times. These ‘New Old Hindi film songs’ are still favorites and not just among people of old age but also among youngsters. This is because of the fact that New Old Hindi songs used to have more voice transitions and high and low notes which makes their performance more appealing to the listeners. The New Old Hindi songs are always in, unaffected by latest ones.

Now what draws us to the swinging 70s is its rare combination of simple retro chick and disco dazzle. The decade in which women asserted their individuality through carefree dressing. An era when macho men wore florid shirts with broad collars. A time frame that broke out of the formal dress code to celebrate casual style and then climaxed the ‘me-decade’ as it was the beginning of ‘anything goes’ culture and a form of self-expression.

It was a period of ‘paradigm shift’ as far as the Bollywood heroine is concerned. Gone was the demure, submissive leading lady of the 60s and in stepped the empowered, modern heroine of the 70s.

Early 70s heralded with Mumtaz popularizing diaphanous fabrics and layered saris. Sharmila Tagore’s elaborate bouffant, arched eyebrows and Cleopatra-like winged eyeliner became her signature style. The mid-70s witnessed the simple and conservative chick of Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri.

The late 70s showcased the emancipated, modern woman whose clothes and accessories reflected her Westernized persona. The pleasantly plump form of a heroine morphed into the slim and lanky hippie look. Svelte Parveen Babi popularized the dancer’s leotard and body suit. ‘Bobby’ launched sweet 16, Dimple Kapadia dressed in true American High School style togged in miniskirts, bikini, hot pants and crop tops.

As for the Bollywood heroes of 70s , mixed era of romances and action flicks – saw a lot of variety from silk-lungi -kurtas and Guru Shirts favored by Rajesh Khanna and hardy denim jackets and bell bottom jeans ported by Amitabh and Dharmendra.

The first half of 70s was ruled by Rajesh Khanna and the latter half by Amitabh Bachchan, romances and then violent vendetta films.

And last but not the least, the 70s gave us excellent and retro songs and mega hits like ‘Sholay’, ‘Bobby’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Deewaar’ etc.

Here I leave you with my above thoughts to take you to today’s entertaining song. The song is sung mainly by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle but voices of RD Burman and Bhupinder Singh also figure in chorus. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is trademark RD Burman.

The song is picturised as a party dance song on Shashi Kapoor, Leena Das, Sarita, Sujata and many others.

Lyrics of the song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Today 4th January’2021 is the twenty-seventh Remembrance Anniversary of ‘Pancham Da- The genius’ or Rahul Dev Burman ‘the prince of music’.

He was born on 27th June’1939 and he passed away on 4th January’1994 at the age of fifty-four only.

On his Remembrance Day today as a tribute to him I am presenting a song sung by him from the 1983 movie ‘Romance’. For today’s occasion I was looking for a sad song and that also from a ‘debutant movie’. This song is a nice composition and picturized on Kumar Gaurav who is seen roaming in the fields, riverside, hilly areas and some picturesque locations (I don’t know which are these places).

The song though hummable will be liked by those only (I think so) who have not found ‘any purpose of life’ or ‘is missing someone or something in his life’😊 and that is why being annoyed with life the song goes ‘ye zindagi kuchh bhi sahi, par ye mere kis kaam ki’.

Otherwise, it is a nice song to listen and sung well by R.D. Burman with his special musical touch and style.

‘Romance-1983’ was directed by Ramanand Sagar for his home productions ‘Sagar Art Enterprises, Bombay’. Ramanand Sagar was also the producer of this movie. It had Shammi Kapoor, Kumar Gaurav, Poonam Dhillon, with Saeed Jaffrey, Helena Luke, Sushma Seth, Prema Narayan, and Tom Alter. They were supported by Viju Khote, Jugnu, Manmauji, Samrat Kapoor, Dr. Madan Kataria, Randhawa, Jawahar Bhan, Chandan, Yogee, Jitu Vyas, Moolchand.

This movie introduced Christopher, Lilli Put, Jillian. Raj Babbar, Ranjeeta and Ram Sethi make friendly appearance in this movie.

Story, Screenplay and dialogues for this movie were written by Mirza Brothers. Editing of this movie was done by Subhash Sehgal.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.10.1983.

This movie had five songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Amit Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and R.D. Burman were the playback singers for this movie.

Today’s song is sung by R.D. Burman and lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. Music is by R.D. Burman himself as mentioned above.

let us now enjoy today’s song …

Song-Ye zindagi kuchh bhi sahi par ye mere kis kaam ki (Romance)(1983) Singer-R D Burman, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

ho ho ho ho
ye zindagi ee
kuchh bhi sahi ee
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki
ye zindagi
kuchh bhi sahi ee
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki
jis ke liye jeete hain log
jis ke liye jeete hain log
bas hai kami us naam ki ee
ye zindagi
ho o o
kuchh bhi sahi ee
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki

ho o
jisko nahin hai armaan koi
kaisi jawaani hai ye ae
jisko nahin hai armaan koi ee
kaisi jawaani hai ye ae
o jiska nahin hai unwaan koi
aisi kahaani hai ye
ho naa hai khabar aaghaaz ki ee
naa hai khabar aaghaaz ki
naa hai khabar anjaam ki ee
ye zindagi
kuchh bhi sahi
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki

pyaasaa rahaa main
meri gali mein saawan barastaa rahaa aa
pyaasaa rahaa main
meri gali mein saawan barastaa rahaa aa
mele mein jaise koyi akelaa
aise tarastaa rahaa
poochho naa ye kaise bhalaa aa
poochho naa ye kaise bhalaa
maine subah se shaam ki ee
ye zindagi ee
kuchh bhi sahi ee
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki

o dil behlaane ko
likhte hain dil ke qisse fasaanon mein log
dil behlaane ko
likhte hain dil ke qisse fasaanon mein log
o rakhte hain heere moti sajaa ke
apni dukaanon mein log
baazaar mein qeemat hai kya aa
baazaar mein qeemat hai kya
toote huye ae is jaam ki ee ee
ye zindagi ee
kuchh bhi sahi ee
par ye mere ae kis kaam ki
jis ke liye jeete hain log
jis ke liye jeete hain log
bas hai kami us naam ki ee
laa laa laa laa laa
laa laa laa laa laa la la la
